Nuclear Activity in Galaxies Across Cosmic Time, Proceedings of the conference held 7-11 October 2019 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Edited by Mirjana Pović et al. Proceedings of the International Astronomical Union, Volume 356, pp. 12-16, The J-PAS survey will soon start observing thousands of square degrees of the Northern Sky with its unique set of 56 narrow band filters covering the entire optical wavelength range, providing, effectively, a low resolution spectra for every object detected. Active galaxies and quasars, thanks to their strong emission lines, can be easily identified and characterized with J-PAS data. A variety of studies can be performed, from IFU-like analysis of local AGN, to clustering of high-z quasars. We also expect to be able to extract intrinsic physical quasar properties from the J-PAS pseudo-spectra, including continuum slope and emission line luminosities. Here we show the first attempts of using the QSFit software package to derive the properties for 22 quasars at 0.8 < z < 2 observed by the miniJPAS survey, the first deg2 of J-PAS data obtained with an interim camera. We explore the stellar content of the Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS) Data Release 2 and show its potential to identify low-metallicity stars using the Stellar Parameters Estimation based on Ensemble Methods (SPEEM) pipeline. SPEEM is a tool to provide determinations of atmospheric parameters for stars and separate stellar sources from quasars, using the unique J-PLUS photometric system. The adoption of adequate selection criteria allows the identification of metal-poor star candidates suitable for spectroscopic follow-up. SPEEM consists of a series of machine learning models which uses a training sample observed by both J-PLUS and the SEGUE spectroscopic survey. The training sample has temperatures Teff between 4\,800 K and 9\,000 K; $\log g$ between 1.0 and 4.5, and $-3.1

Context. The Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS) has obtained precise photometry in twelve specially designed filters for large numbers of Galactic stars. Deriving their precise stellar atmospheric parameters and individual elemental abundances is crucial for studies of Galactic structure, and the assembly history and chemical evolution of our Galaxy. Aims. Our goal is to estimate not only stellar parameters (effective temperature, Teff, surface gravity, log g, and metallicity, [Fe/H]), but also [α/Fe] and four elemental abundances ([C/Fe], [N/Fe], [Mg/Fe], and [Ca/Fe]) using data from J-PLUS DR1. Methods. By combining recalibrated photometric data from J-PLUS DR1, Gaia DR2, and spectroscopic labels from LAMOST, we design and train a set of cost-sensitive neural networks, the CSNet, to learn the non-linear mapping from stellar colors to their labels. Results. We have achieved precisions of δTeff {\sim}55K, δlogg{\sim}0.15dex, and δ[Fe/H]{\sim}0.07dex, respectively, over a wide range of temperature, surface gravity, and metallicity. The uncertainties of the abundance estimates for [α/Fe] and the four individual elements are in the range 0.04-0.08 dex. We compare our parameter and abundance estimates with those from other spectroscopic catalogs such as APOGEE and GALAH, and find an overall good agreement. Conclusions. Our results demonstrate the potential of well-designed, high-quality photometric data for determinations of stellar parameters as well as individual elemental abundances. Applying the method to J-PLUS DR1, we have obtained the aforementioned parameters for about two million stars, providing an outstanding data set for chemo-dynamic analyses of the Milky Way. We present Star Formation Histories (SFHs) for a sample of 104 massive (stellar mass M > 10$^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$) quiescent galaxies (MQGs) at $z$=1.0-1.5 from the analysis of spectro-photometric data from the SHARDS and HST/WFC3 G102 and G141 surveys of the GOODS-N field, jointly with broad-band observations from ultraviolet (UV) to far-infrared (Far-IR). The sample is constructed on the basis of rest-frame UVJ colours and specific star formation rates (sSFR=SFR/Mass). The Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) of each galaxy are compared to models assuming a delayed exponentially declining SFH. A Monte Carlo algorithm characterizes the degeneracies, which we are able to break taking advantage of the SHARDS data resolution, by measuring indices such as MgUV and D4000. The population of MQGs shows a duality in their properties. The sample is dominated (85%) by galaxies with young mass-weighted ages, tM $$ 1.0, when our galaxies were 0.5-1.0 Gyr old. According to these SFHs, all the MQGs experienced a Luminous Infrared Galaxy (LIRG) phase that lasts for $\sim$ 500 Myr, and half of them an Ultra Luminous Infrared Galaxy (ULIRG) phase for $\sim$ 100 Myr. We find that the MQG population is almost assembled at $z$ $\sim$ 1, and continues evolving passively with few additions to the population., 26 pages, 18 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Pérez-González et al., We present the Survey for High-z Absorption Red and Dead Sources (SHARDS), an ESO/GTC Large Program carried out using the OSIRIS instrument on the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC). SHARDS is an ultra-deep optical spectro-photometric survey of the GOODS-N field covering 130 arcmin2 at wavelengths between 500 and 950 nm with 24 contiguous medium-band filters (providing a spectral resolution R ∿ 50). The data reach an AB magnitude of 26.5 (at least at a 3σ level) with sub-arcsec seeing in all bands. SHARDS' main goal is to obtain accurate physical properties of intermediate- and high-z galaxies using well-sampled optical spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with sufficient spectral resolution to measure absorption and emission features, whose analysis will provide reliable stellar population and active galactic nucleus (AGN) parameters. Among the different populations of high-z galaxies, SHARDS' principal targets are massive quiescent galaxies at z > 1, whose existence is one of the major challenges facing current hierarchical models of galaxy formation. In this paper, we outline the observational strategy and include a detailed discussion of the special reduction and calibration procedures which should be applied to the GTC/OSIRIS data. An assessment of the SHARDS data quality is also performed. We present science demonstration results on the detection and study of emission-line galaxies (star-forming objects and AGNs) at z = 0-5. We also analyze the SEDs for a sample of 27 quiescent massive galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts in the range 1.0 < z ≲ 1.4. We discuss the improvements introduced by the SHARDS data set in the analysis of their star formation history and stellar properties. We discuss the systematics arising from the use of different stellar population libraries, typical in this kind of study. Averaging the results from the different libraries, we find that the UV-to-MIR SEDs of the massive quiescent galaxies at z = 1.0-1.4 are well described by an exponentially decaying star formation history with scale Ï„ = 100-200 Myr, age around 1.5-2.0 Gyr, solar or slightly sub-solar metallicity, and moderate extinction, A(V) ∿ 0.5 mag. We also find that galaxies with masses above M* are typically older than lighter galaxies, as expected in a downsizing scenario of galaxy formation. This trend is, however, model dependent, i.e., it is significantly more evident in the results obtained with some stellar population synthesis libraries, and almost absent in others. © 2013.
