The environmental challenges posed by plastic pollution have prompted the exploration of eco-friendly alternatives to disposable plastic packaging and utensils. Paper-based materials, derived from renewable resources such as wood pulp, non-wood pulp (bamboo pulp, straw pulp, reed pulp, etc.), and recycled paper fibers, are distinguished by their recyclability and biodegradability, making them promising substitutes in the field of plastic food packaging. Despite their merits, challenges like porosity, hydrophilicity, limited barrier properties, and a lack of functionality have restricted their packaging potential. To address these constraints, researchers have introduced antimicrobial agents, hydrophobic substances, and other functional components to improve both physical and functional properties. This enhancement has resulted in notable improvements in food preservation outcomes in real-world scenarios. This paper offers a comprehensive review of recent progress in hydrophobic antimicrobial paper-based materials. In addition to outlining the characteristics and functions of commonly used antimicrobial substances in food packaging, it consolidates the current research landscape and preparation techniques for hydrophobic paper. Furthermore, the paper explores the practical applications of hydrophobic antimicrobial paper-based materials in agricultural produce, meat, and seafood, as well as ready-to-eat food packaging. Finally, challenges in production, application, and recycling processes are outlined to ensure safety and efficacy, and prospects for the future development of antimicrobial hydrophobic paper-based materials are discussed. Overall, the emergence of hydrophobic antimicrobial paper-based materials stands out as a robust alternative to plastic food packaging, offering a compelling solution with superior food preservation capabilities. This research aims to develop white bread shelf-life extension sachet with controlled release of antimicrobial agent prepared from multicomponent bio-based materials. The structure of antimicrobial sachet consists of two major parts i.e., controlled release part and active part. The first part produced from paper coated with ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH). The second one was an active part which produced from biodegradable poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) and geraniol essential oil blend. Inhibition clear zone test results showed that a suitable geraniol concentration, encapsulated in PBS, was 10 wt%. Based on the water vapor transmission test, coating paper with EVOH for three times (around 450 μm) was an optimal condition for the use as a controlled release part. Release test indicated that geraniol migration concentration increased with increasing the relative humidity (RH) in the package which correlated to the moisture liberated from bread slice. Shelf-life extension study informed that the spoilage of bread stored with antimicrobial sachet was delayed by more than three weeks. In summary, this antimicrobial sachet could be used in food shelf-life extension purpose which easily placed in any food container. A functional biopolymer-coated paper was prepared by coating a ternary blend of the alginate, carboxymethyl cellulose, and carrageenan with grapefruit seed extract (GSE) for the substitute use of synthetic polymer-coated paper. The microstructure of the surface and cross-section of the coated paper analyzed by field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) indicated that the biopolymer was compatible with the base paper and filled the pores of the porous fiber to make a smooth-surfaced coating paper. The properties of the biopolymer-coated paper, such as water and oil resistance, water vapor barrier, surface hydrophobicity, and mechanical properties, increased significantly compared with not only the base paper but also commercially used PE-coated paper. The blended biopolymer coating material exhibited strong antibacterial activity against food-borne pathogenic bacteria, Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli, which were destroyed completely within 3 and 9 h, respectively. The packaging test for a minced fish cake packed with the biopolymer-coated paper showed the complete destruction of surface inoculated bacteria in 6-9 days. In the present work, we report the synthesis of chitosan:starch‑silver nanoparticle (Cht:St-AgNPs) coated papers for antimicrobial packaging applications. The starch-assisted synthesized St-AgNPs are spherical in shape with an average particle size of 7 nm. Chitosan was mixed into the synthesized St-AgNPs solution with different ratios of 9:1, 8:2, 7:3, and 5:5 by weight. Further, the influence of different ratios of Cht:St-AgNPs on the various paper properties such as mechanical properties, water and oil resistance, and antimicrobial activities was investigated. It was observed that the properties of the coated papers were strongly dependent on the composition of Cht:St-AgNPs. The Cht:St-AgNPs-coated paper prepared with the ratio of 9:1 showed excellent mechanical properties and good resistance properties against water and oil. The Cht:St-AgNPs coated papers showed a remarkable enhancement in mechanical strength, oil and water resistance, and antibacterial and antifungal activity, which can make them a potential candidate for functional antimicrobial packaging applications., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Toward our goal of scalable, antimicrobial materials based on photodynamic inactivation, paper sheets comprised of photosensitizer-conjugated cellulose fibers were prepared using porphyrin and BODIPY photosensitizers, and characterized by spectroscopic (infrared, UV-vis diffuse reflectance, inductively coupled plasma optical emission) and physical (gel permeation chromatography, elemental, and thermal gravimetric analyses) methods. Antibacterial efficacy was evaluated against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC-2913), vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (ATCC-2320), Acinetobacter baumannii (ATCC-19606), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC-9027), and Klebsiella pneumoniae (ATCC-2146). Our best results were achieved with a cationic porphyrin-paper conjugate, Por((+))-paper, with inactivation upon illumination (30 min, 65 ± 5 mW/cm(2), 400-700 nm) of all bacterial strains studied by 99.99+% (4 log units), regardless of taxonomic classification. Por((+))-paper also inactivated dengue-1 virus (>99.995%), influenza A (∼ 99.5%), and human adenovirus-5 (∼ 99%). These results demonstrate the potential of cellulose materials to serve as scalable scaffolds for anti-infective or self-sterilizing materials against both bacteria and viruses when employing a photodynamic inactivation mode of action.

Parabens (alkyl esters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid) are widely used as antimicrobial preservatives in personal care products, pharmaceuticals, and foodstuffs. Although parabens have been reported to be used as antimicrobials in certain types of papers (e.g., wet sanitary or hygiene wipes), little is known about the occurrence of these compounds in paper products. In this study, we determined the concentrations of six paraben analogs, methyl (MeP), ethyl (EtP), propyl (PrP), butyl (BuP), benzyl (BzP), and heptyl parabens (HepP), in 253 paper products divided into 18 categories, using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). At least one of the six parabens was detected in almost all (detection rate: 98%) paper samples, and the total concentrations (∑PBs; sum of six parabens) ranged from 1.85 to 3,220,000 ng/g (geometric mean (GM): 103; median: 55.1 ng/g). Sanitary wipes contained very high concentrations of ∑PBs (GM: 8300 ng/g). Paper currencies, tickets, business cards, food cartons, flyers, and newspapers contained notable concentrations of ∑PBs, and the GM concentrations in these paper categories were on the order of a few tens to thousands of nanograms per gram. One source of parabens in paper products is the use of these chemicals as antifungal agents. MeP and PrP were the predominant analogs, accounting for approximately 62% and 16% of the total concentrations of parabens, respectively. On the basis of measured concentrations and frequency of handling of paper products, we estimated the daily intake (EDI) of parabens through dermal absorption. The GM and 95th percentile EDI values were 6.31 and 2050 ng/day, respectively, for the general population. The guanidine-based antimicrobial polymers were grafted onto the surface of beeswax latex particles stabilized with or without amphoteric surfactant, n-dodecyl-N,N-dimethylglycine. N-(3-Dimethylaminopropyl)-N'-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC) was used as a coupling reagent to introduce the covalent bonding or ensure sufficient binding force. The resulting novel beeswax latexes were utilized as a dual-functional paper additive, which improved both water-vapor resistance and antimicrobial activities of the paper. Compared with control sample, the water vapor transmission rate of the paper was reduced significantly. The antimicrobial activity of paper against E. coli was also improved substantially even at a low dosage of the beeswax latex derivatives (20 mg/g fiber).

The silver-nanoparticle (AgNP) containing paper was successfully prepared. The AgNP is deposited by the in situ reduction of silver nitrate on the acrylamide grafted bagasse paper sheets in the presence of citrate molecules as stabilizing agent. In the present paper, grafting of acrylamide onto bagasse paper sheets using potassium persulfate was carried out under the influence of microwave radiations (MWR). The modified paper sheets were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV-spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Antimicrobial activities of the prepared paper sheets were also investigated against G+ve bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, G-ve bacterium Pseudomomas aeruginosa, and yeast Candida albicans, which are model microorganisms for testing bactericidal properties. Colloidal silver has gained wide acceptance as an antimicrobial agent, and various substrates coated with nanosilver such as fabrics, plastics, and metal have been shown to develop antimicrobial properties. Here, a simple method to develop coating of colloidal silver on paper using ultrasonic radiation is presented, and the coatings are characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), high resolution scanning electron microscope (HRSEM), and thermogravimetry (TGA) measurements. Depending on the variables such as precursor concentrations and ultrasonication time, uniform coatings ranging from 90 to 150 nm in thickness have been achieved. Focused ion beam (FIB) cross section imaging measurements revealed that silver nanoparticles penetrated the paper surface to a depth of more than 1 μm, resulting in highly stable coatings. The coated paper demonstrated antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus, suggesting its potential application as a food packing material for longer shelf life.

Chitosan-guanidine complexes were prepared by reacting chitosan and polyhexamethylene guanidine hydrochloride or crosslinked polyhexamethylene guanidine hydrochloride in the presence of sodium tripolyphosphate as a crosslinking agent. The complexes, used as functional additives for paper, synergistically improved wet-strength and antimicrobial activities. In comparison with the control sample, the wet/dry strength ratio of hand-sheets treated with the complexes was increased from 2.65% up to 23.3%. The MIC values of the chitosan-PHGH and chitosan-PHGHE complexes against Escherichia coli were 15.6 and 31.2 microg mL(-1), respectively, thus demonstrating excellent antimicrobial activity. Hand-sheets treated with the complexes exhibited antibacterial activity against E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The release of the guanidine polymers included in the complexes was dynamically monitored using UV and the results showed the amount released exceeded 80%. Background: In this study the antimicrobial effectiveness of oregano and sage essential oils (EOs) incorporated into two different matrices, whey protein isolate (WPI) and cellulose-based filter paper, was analysed., Results: Antimicrobial properties of WPI-based films containing oregano and sage EOs were tested against Listeria innocua, Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella enteritidis. Oregano EO showed antimicrobial activity against all three micro-organisms. The highest inhibition zones were against L. innocua. However, sage EO did not show antimicrobial activity against any of the micro-organisms. Antimicrobial activity was confirmed for both EOs using cellulose-based filter paper as supporting matrix, although it was significantly more intense for oregano EO. Inhibition surfaces were significantly greater when compared with those of the WPI films. This finding is likely due to the higher porosity and diffusivity of the active compounds in the filter paper., Conclusion: The interactions between the EOs and the films have a critical effect on the diffusivity of the active compounds and therefore on the final antimicrobial activity. As a result, to obtain active edible films, it is necessary to find the equilibrium point between the nature and concentration of the active compounds in the EO and the formulation of the film.

Soy protein isolates (SPI) and octenyl-succinate (OSA) modified starch were used as paper coating and inclusion matrices of two antimicrobial compounds: cinnamaldehyde and carvacrol. Antimicrobial compound losses from the coated papers were evaluated after the coating and drying process, and the two matrices demonstrated retention ability that depended on the compound nature and concentration. Whereas carvacrol losses ranged between 12 and 45%, cinnamaldehyde losses varied from 43 to 76%. The losses were always higher from OSA-starch-coated papers than from SPI-coated papers. During storage in accelerated conditions, at 30 degrees C and 60% relative humidity, carvacrol retention from coated papers was found to be similar whatever the coating matrices and the carvacrol rate. In contrast, the retention from SPI-coated papers was particularly high for the cinnamaldehyde concentration of 30% (w/w) compared to the lowest (10% w/w) or highest concentration (60% w/w). Compared to carvacrol, faster release was observed, particurlarly when OSA-starch was used. The antimicrobial properties of the coated papers were shown against Escherichia coli and Botrytis cinerea and explained by favorable conditions of total release of the antimicrobial agents.

A simple, low-cost, sensitive and selective LC method was developed for the determination of enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin in chicken blood. The method was applied to whole blood from a chicken using dried blood spots on filter paper disks. The detection limits of enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin (100 microl of whole blood on a disk) were 0.005 and 0.01 microg/ml, respectively. The whole procedure was verified in intra-laboratory studies (recoveries of both compounds were above 90%), and its applicability was tested with blood from the chicken receiving enrofloxacin in a single oral dose at a level of 10 mg/kg body mass. Two cases of contact allergy to methylisothiazolinones from slimicides used in pulp and paper mills are described. The first patient worked as a batcher in a paper mill, and he was in charge of pumping slimicides containing methylisothiazolinones. During pumping, the liquid often overflowed, and his clothes were wet daily with slimicides. After 3 months of work, he began to suffer from dermatitis, which improved when he was away from work. A clinical investigation confirmed the dermatitis diagnosis and a positive skin patch test to Kathon CG was found. The second patient worked as an agent for a firm marketing slimicides containing methylisothiazolinones. One of his tasks was to pump slimicides into the mills, and during such operations his clothes often got wet from slimicides. After some years of work, he began to suffer from erythema and dermatitis after contact with the slimicides. A skin patch test showed a strongly positive reaction to Kathon CG. These case reports draw the attention to the fact that employees in the pulp and paper industry handling slimicides are exposed to extraordinarily high concentrations of methylisothiazolinones and run a substantial risk of being sensitized. The report also stresses the need for improved handling routines of those strong sensitizers in the paper mills.

A high-performance liquid chromatography method for the simultaneous analysis of dapsone (DDS), the major metabolite of DDS, monoacetyldapsone (MADDS), and pyrimethamine (PYR) was modified for capillary blood samples obtained by finger prick and dried on filter paper. Limit of quantitation using 150 microliters whole blood dried on filter paper was found to be 20 ng/ml for DDS and PYR and 15 ng/ml for MADDS (precision < 15%). The clinically relevant concentrations of DDS are 50-2,000 ng/ml and for PYR 25-150 ng/ml. No interference from several drugs were observed. The accuracy of the filter paper method and the original whole-blood method was almost comparable. Standardization could therefore be obtained by the more simple whole-blood method. Dried filter paper samples stored at 19-22 degrees C were stable for months and for 2 weeks stored at 35 degrees C. The concentrations of simultaneously collected capillary blood and conventional venous blood samples correlated well. The present method using capillary blood dried on filter paper is reliable, simple, sensitive, and applicable in the field with limited technical facilities.

The study investigates four paper-based materials designed for short-time wrapping of meat products by determining morpho-structure, capillary-hydroscopic, barrier and antibacterial properties, wettability and migration into food simulants. The paper-based materials are coded as RO, SP, IT and SLO. RO and SLO samples exhibit the best barrier properties against water vapors. The low solubility and contact angles of RO, IT and SLO in A simulant (distilled water) make them suitable for aqueous food storage. The extremely high solubility of SP and SLO in simulant B (acetic acid) shows that wax and hydrophobized starch, respectively are carried by the acidic media, thus these agents are unlikely to coat the paper designed to package acidic food. SLO inhibits E. coli, Salmonella enterica, Lysteria monocytogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and fluorescens. Polyethylene coated on RO and IT surface and wax impregnated on SP have a lower antimicrobial activity in comparison with hydrophobized starch coated on SLO. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A goal of our study was to find an alternative to nano-silver-based antimicrobial materials which would contain active silver immobilized in a solid matrix that prevents its migration into the surrounding environment. In this study, we investigated whether silver cations dispersed in an atomic form and trapped in an ion-exchanged zeolite show comparable antimicrobial activity to silver nanoparticles (NPs). The biocidal active material was prepared from the sodium form of faujasite type zeolite in two steps: (1) exchange with silver cations, (2) removal of the external silver oxide NPs by elution with Na2EDTA solution. The modified biocidal zeolite was then added to paper pulp to obtain sheets. The zeolite paper samples and reference samples containing silver NPs were tested in terms of biocidal activity against an array of fungi and bacteria strains, including Escherichia coli, Serratia marcescens, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus megaterium, Trichoderma viride, Chaetomium globosum, Aspergillus niger, Cladosporium cladosporioides, and Mortierella alpina. The paper with the modified faujasite additive showed higher or similar antibacterial and antifungal activities towards the majority of tested microbes in comparison with the silver NP-filled paper. Nonbiodegradable features and the lack of antimicrobial activity for conventional synthetic polymer-based packaging materials remain as extensive concerns for environmental issues and food safety. In this work, an antimicrobial copolymer PHGH-PPGDE was synthesized via a reaction between polyhexamethylene guanidine hydrochloride (PHGH) and poly(propylene glycol)diglycidyl ether (PPGDE). The obtained PHGH-PPGDE was amphiphilic, antimicrobial and reactive due to the terminal reactive group. The TEM images indicated that PHGH-PPGDE formed aggregated particles dispersed in water. The antimicrobial paper was conveniently prepared by dip-coating a paper matrix in the PHGH-PPGDE aqueous dispersion, or mixing the dispersion with pulp. Silver-clay nanohybrids based on silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with montmorillonit (MMT) and milled MMT, shortly AgMMTnano and AgMMTmilled, have been prepared to improve the performance of antibacterial properties of paper. The results obtained by dynamic light scattering indicated the presence of silver particles in the nanometer range, which have a great accumulation tendency. The results of AAS and ICP-AES tests showed that nanosilver amount in the AgMMTmilled was doubled compared to the AgMMTnano, but according to the EDX results, the amount of nanosilver in paper treated with the former was less than in the latter. FE-SEM images showed that the dimensions of deposited nanosilver on the surface of clay were smaller than in case of AgNPs alone. Papers treated with nanohybrids had better antibacterial properties compared to that prepared by naked nanosilver. It was also found that the antibacterial property of papers treated with AgMMTnano were more stable during three-stage tests compared to those with AgMMTmilled. Nanohybrids with Ag conc. more than 15 ppm, especially hybrids with Ag conc. of 50 ppm, result in a significant improvement in antibacterial properties of paper. It can be concluded that silver-clay nanohybrid with a 25-ppm concentration of nanosilver could be the best and most economic antibacterial component. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Immobilized silver nano-particles (Ag NPs) possess excellent antimicrobial properties due to their unique surface characteristics. In this paper, immobilized silver nano-particles were synthesized in the presence of chitin nano-crystals (CNC) based on the Tollens mechanism (reduction of silver ion by aldehydes in the chitosan oligosaccharides (COS)) under microwave-assisted conditions. The prepared Ag NPs-loaded CNC nano-composites were then applied onto the paper surface via coating for the preparation of antibacterial paper. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) results confirmed that the Ag NPs were immobilized onto the CNC. The transmission electron microscope (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results further revealed that the spherical Ag NPs (5–12 nm) were well dispersed on the surface of CNC. In this work, paper was rendered antimicrobial via applying antimicrobialmodified starch as a coating material onto the paper's surface. The antimicrobial starch was prepared by covalently bonding guanidine polymers using a coupling reaction. Two different coating layers were applied onto the paper's surface. The first coating layer contained clay mixed with a latex binder (clay 100 g/latex 20 g). The antimicrobial starches, which possessed different grafting ratios of the antimicrobial agent (30 wt.% and 50 wt.%), were applied as the second coating layer on the paper. The results showed that the coating thickness was approximately constant at 4 µm. In the presence of 0.5 to 1.0 wt.% antimicrobial starch on cellulose fibers, the growth inhibition of bacteria was almost 100%. Additionally, the resulting coated paper exhibited high antimicrobial activities against E. coli. Furthermore, the results showed that the coated papers prevented fungal growth. Abstract: We report on the synthesis of cellulose paper bearing a cationic porphyrin, designed for antimicrobial applications. Tricationic porphyrin has been covalently grafted on paper, without previous chemical modification of the cellulosic support, using 1,3,5-triazine derivative as linker. The obtained porphyrin-grafted paper was characterized by infrared (ATR-FTIR), UV–visible and diffuse reflectance UV–vis (DRUV) spectroscopies to confirm the triazine linkage. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was used to investigate thermal properties of grafted paper. Antimicrobial activity of porphyrin–cellulose material was tested under visible light irradiation against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Abstract: A silver nanoparticle colloid was prepared by a modified Tollens method using d-glucose as the reduction agent. The obtained nanoparticles were used for the modification of pine, linter and recycled cellulose fibers. Although the silver contents were relatively low (0.05–0.13wt.%), the cellulose-sheets prepared from the modified fibers show improved mechanical and viscoelastic properties. The tensile index (strength) increased with up to 30% in comparison to the index of the sheets obtained from the untreated fibers. The influence of the nanoparticles on the viscoelastic properties of the cellulose sheets was investigated by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) in the temperature range from −120 to 20°C and with a force frequency of 100Hz. A broad relaxation transition positioned at −80°C was observed in the loss modulus spectrum of all the cellulose sheets, while the Ag-modified sheets exhibited higher storage moduli values in the whole temperature range. The antimicrobial activity tests show that the pine, silver and recycled cellulose fiber sheets with silver nanoparticles can be successfully employed to prevent the viability and growth of the common pathogens Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans. Research into paper-based sensors or functional materials that can perform analytical functions with active recognition capabilities is rapidly expanding, and significant research effort has been made into the design and fabrication of bioactive paper at the biosensor level to detect potential health hazards. A key step in the fabrication of bioactive paper is the design of the experimental and operational procedures for the immobilization of biomolecules such as antibodies, enzymes, phages, cells, proteins, synthetic polymers and DNA aptamers on a suitably prepared paper membrane. The immobilization methods are concisely categorized into physical absorption, bioactive ink entrapment, bioaffinity attachment and covalent chemical bonding immobilization. Each method has individual immobilization characteristics. Although every biomolecule-paper combination has to be optimized before use, the bioactive ink entrapment method is the most commonly used approach owing to its general applicability and biocompatibility. Currently, there are four common applications of bioactive paper: (1) paper-based bioassay or paper-based analytical devices for sample conditioning; (2) counterfeiting and countertempering in the packaging and construction industries; (3) pathogen detection for food and water quality monitoring; and (4) deactivation of pathogenic bacteria using antimicrobial paper. This article reviews and compares the different biomolecule immobilization techniques and discusses current trends. Current, emerging and future applications of bioactive paper are also discussed. Active cellulose-based packaging materials were prepared by binding lactoferrin to paper modified with anionic polyelectrolytes. About 63% of the protein added in the slurry was present in the finished paper, corresponding to about 0.28 mg protein per cm2 of the glassine paper produced. The efficacy of the activated materials was assessed by microbiological trials, employing targets bacteria considered as spoilage and/or pathogens in food products. Lactoferrin-activated paper evidenced its efficacy against growing cells of E. coli and L. innocua, with a maximum of 0.3 and 1.3 log cycles reduction of the final population, respectively. Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods were grown on a paper support prepared from soft wood pulp. The photocatalytic activity of a sheet of paper with ZnO nanorods embedded in its porous matrix has been studied. ZnO nanorods were firmly attached to cellulose fibers and the photocatalytic paper samples were reused several times with nominal decrease in efficiency. Photodegradation of up to 93% was observed for methylene blue in the presence of paper filled with ZnO nanorods upon irradiation with visible light at 963Wm-2 for 120 min. Under similar conditions, photodegradation of approximately 35% was observed for methyl orange. Antibacterial tests revealed that the photocatalytic paper inhibits the growth of Escherichia coli under room lighting conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Antimicrobial papers were prepared by coating paper with soy protein isolate (SPI) solution as inclusion matrix of carvacrol, an antimicrobial agent. Addition of carvacrol (30% w/w of SPI) to SPI solution (10% w/v) prepared at 25°C induced soy protein aggregates and viscosity decrease. Heat treatment (50, 70, 90°C) of SPI solutions and carvacrol addition improved homogeneity reduced particles size and increased viscosity of solutions. The aggregated structure of SPI in the presence of carvacrol at 25°C may play the role of a trapping structure leading to low carvacrol losses during coating and drying process of paper (9.6% against 37% after heat treatment at 90°C) and to lower release rates specially the first three days (0.04g/m2/day and 0.31g/m2/day when SPI coating solutions were prepared at 25 and 90°C, respectively). Regardless of the heat treatments received by the SPI solutions, residual carvacrol quantities in the coated papers after 50 days ranged between 0.6 and 0.7g/m2. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

One of the main problems faced by libraries, archives and collectors is the mold degradation of the paper-based documents, books, artworks etc. Microfungi (molds) emerge in regular storage conditions of such items (humidity, usually over 50%, and temperatures under 21 °C). If the removal of the visible mycelium is relatively easy, there is always the problem of the subsequent appearance of mold as the spores remain trapped in the cellulosic, fibrillary texture, which acts as a net. Moreover, due to improper hand hygiene bacteria contamination, old books could represent a source of biohazard, being colonized with human pathogens. An easy and accessible method of decontamination, which could offer long term protection is therefore needed. Here, we present a facile use of the ZnO nanopowders as antimicrobial agents, suitable for cellulose-based products, conferring an extended antibacterial and anti-microfungal effect.
