24. Do Americans Really Like Children? Draft -- Position Paper.

Abstract

This position paper explores American under-development in the area of policy formation concerning children and families. Three pressing problems believed to be faced by American children and their parents are presented and discussed. These are: (1) the depopulation of the family, said to be largely attributable to the changes, assumptions, and newly generated demands for consumption, and not to the faults of individual parents; (2) the intellectualization of the child, said to originate in the nature of the American economic system and its influence on the school systems -- quantifying, measuring, and using these measurements to perpetuate the relative positions of existing groups in the society; and, (3) the problem of perpetuation of exclusion, siad to affect children characterized by the four factors of race, poverty, handicap, and parents overwhelmed by life. This last problem is discussed and explained in terms of the economic system. A final section on individual uplift and social change concludes by underlining the posited contrast between individual blame and uplift, and the need for social and economic change. (Author/AM)

26. The Useful Humanists: Alternative Careers for Ph.D.'s in the Humanities. Working Papers.

Abstract

Addressing the current employment crisis in the humanities fields, this paper examines employment opportunities for Ph.D. graduates outside the university environment. The report notes that humanities graduates have learned skills of research, problem solving, and writing, and that graduate training emphasizes the ability to penetrate underlying assumptions beyond the immediate situation. These skills may be easily transferred to non-academic pursuits. Hypothetical projects are outlined for humanities specialists and the American Studies Internship Program designed to place its graduates in business and government. Suggested areas in which Ph.D. graduates would make effective contributions include organizational development, human resource programs, career development, and public affairs. Recommendations are that humanists realize that non-academic jobs are not second rate and that interdisciplinary studies, career counseling services, and internships be established. Sections of the paper discuss the current crisis, provide unemployment statistics, and examine academic and institutional stereotypes. A list of associations and a bibliography relevant to humanists seeking non-academic jobs are provided. (KC)

Abstract

Understanding U.S. culture is difficult, because the information explosion creates an increase in the number and complexity of various cultural relationships. American Studies is a valuable and unique discipline because it directly addresses this problem, the basic purposes of education, and the relationships that shape students' culture. This document examines the limitations of traditional schemes for organizing academic disciplines and proposes a model that focuses on relationships among disciplines through an emphasis on time. An outline of basic objectives for American Studies is presented that stresses: (1) academic disciplines; (2) personal development; (3) skill acquisition; and (4) aesthetic appreciation. Suggestions are offered for organizing American Studies units, courses, or curricula; and ideas for course content and teaching methods are presented. An example of one teaching method is illustrated, and diagrams are included. (JHP)

Abstract

This four-volume anthology is comprised of numerous drafts, papers, and reports written by professional staff and consultants of the Hudson Institute. The many chapters are not considered to offer any solutions but to have raised many problems, sorted out and elucidated issues, often in new ways, and suggested recommendations. The present collection, Volume 1, addresses: American poverty problems and policies of the past, present, and future; the philosophical and historical perceptions of poverty, income, and income redistribution; the measurement and reduction of poverty; and, the workability of some income redistribution programs. Listings under the section on problems include theoretical, historical, and pragmatical considerations, with the section on perceptions and policies including topics such as welfare, poverty standards, metropolitan variations in poverty incidence, and definitions, change, continuity, and the future in the measurement and reducation of poverty. Income tax and income redistribution topics include the meaning of the income tax, federal income distribution policy in the 1970's, the "negative income tax", social security expenditures, and general revenue sharing and the administration of federal grants-in-aid. 44. The View from 'Norge': Rights-Based Discourse and Human Rights Education in Norway

Abstract

This paper uses the author's time as a Fulbright Roving Scholar in American Studies to Norway as an entrée into exploring human rights discourse and Human Rights Education in Norway, a country that is often thought of as one of the centers of human rights work in Europe--and appreciates this association. It begins by situating human rights in Norwegian law and history, connecting it to the author's home and teaching context. It then recounts the experience of serving as Roving Scholar, connecting it to observations both positive and potentially detrimental within Norway, concluding with some brief thoughts on a balance between Norwegian and American education systems.

Abstract

Volume 3 of a four volume collection, this document addresses the extent and the depth of public support in America for domestic social welfare programs and the social, moral, and economic attitudes of the poor and near poor. Specifically, three major sections focus on: the national morale and support for domestic reform; attitudes toward welfare, poverty, and government programs; and attitudes of the poor and near poor. Problems considered in the attitudes toward welfare, are war, inflation, and crime, while issues addressed in the attitudes of the poor and near poor include political views (liberal/conservative), confidence in leaders of key U.S. institutions, anomie, happiness and satisfaction, work, financial situation, social issues, and sexual morality. As part of its ongoing programs in digital scholarship and the cyberinfrastructure to support teaching, learning and research, the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) in cooperation with the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) held a symposium on September 15, 2008 in which a group of some 30 leading scholars was invited to articulate the research challenges that will use the new media to advance the analysis and interpretations of text, images and other sources of interest to the humanities and social sciences and in so doing, pose interesting problems for ongoing computational research. White papers were commissioned to help frame the issues. This report contains the final versions of those papers, as well as an account of the day's discussion and a summary of a report by Diane Zorich on digital humanities centers.
