This case study of a community newspaper, Namaskar, and its impact in 'underdeveloped' areas of coastal Odisha in India, discusses the potential of alternative media for social change. It scrutinises and analyses the participatory advocacy activities of Namaskar. Studying participatory journalism favours a more dialogical and reflexive approach, which also draws on ideas of 'critical' and 'radical' media, while also calling attention to the significance of content in bringing about social change. Building on observations and testimonies from the field, collected through multiple qualitative methods for data collection, the study infers that Namaskar ensures significant participation in its advocacy practices, leading to observable changes in and around its catchment area. Hyperlocal media is defined as the general name of journalistic practices that address a specific geographical area or community. However, in the last decade, this concept has started to gain new and important meanings. It is observed that hyperlocal media platforms act with a different purpose and mission than traditional mainstream/local media as a journalistic approach. The starting point of this study is the question of how the theoretical and methodological framework of hyperlocal media appears in Turkey. In this context, it is aimed to define and understand the role, scope and mission of hyperlocal media and to make an evaluation on its reflections in Turkey. In line with these purposes, the problem of this study is the question of "which elements of the hyperlocal media as a journalistic understanding are found in the district newspapers in Turkey." Starting from this basic question, in the first part, the conceptual framework of hyperlocal media is reviewed and its basic features are emphasized. In the analysis part of the study, seven district newspapers that represent seven geographical regions of Turkey were determined. For a month, all news was reviewed daily and, a content analysis was carried out on a total of 908 news. At the end of the study, how the conceptualization of hyperlocal media seems in Turkey is discussed. In addition, it has been determined that there are deficiencies in the context of original news, digital adaptation, civic participation and publicity in terms of applicability and various suggestions were presented for the development of hyperlocal media in Turkey. This article uses the example of camps on the Thai-Burma border to highlight the exclusion of refugees from the common world and subsequent omission of their voices from news coverage. Moreover, the article argues that this exclusion weakens the supposed protection offered to refugees by impeding the media in its role as protector and promoter of human rights. While there has been considerable literature examining the reporting of humanitarian crises to a global audience, in contrast there has been little in the way of research-and practice-concerning strategies to effectively communicate with refugees affected by such crises. Fieldwork conducted in three of nine official Thai-Burma border camps involved interviews with 81 participants, including refugees, humanitarian practitioners and journalists. Participant accounts show that a range of factors inhibit the production of news media coverage relevant to refugees interned in the Thai-Burma border camps, thereby preventing refugees from accessing vital information and voicing in common public space their experiences of violence, corruption and discrimination. The current economic and institutional crisis of journalism in Spain has contributed to the revitalization of media and communicational experiences of social movements and non-profit organizations. This revival of citizen participation reaches prominence from the 15M movement in May 2011, which has contributed to the strengthening of networks among the Third Communication of Media, as well as to the first large-scale coordinated broadcasts by community radios in Spain. This article aims at describing the physiognomy of an emerging sector at the margins of public and private-commercial media. This article critically examines the role of community media movements in articulating state-civil society relations in the establishment of a popular radical democracy in Venezuela. We employ institutional analysis and a frame-alignment approach to understand how community and alternative media (CAM) advocates negotiated issues of identity and autonomy from the state in the creation of the National System of Popular, Alternative, and Community Communication between 2008 and 2009. The analysis revealed that CAM groups reasserted unmet demands for access to the spectrum and autonomy from state agencies, while amplifying the government's 'anti-imperialist conflict frame' as a rationale for increased popular participation in the media. Abstract: In this contribution, we warn against being too optimistic about the actual democratic effects of notions like “civil media”, “community media” “alternative media”, “grassroots media”, “participatory media”, or “participatory culture”. We argue that in contemporary society, which is characterized by structural inequalities, an understanding of alternative media as participatory media is insufficient. As an alternative concept, we suggest the notion of alternative media as critical media. This concept is grounded in critical social theory. A typology of approaches for defining alternative media is constructed. We argue that alternative media need to be situated in the context of visions of an alternative society.
