Unlabelled: A commercial differential mobility particle sizer (DMPS), long and medium column DMA (Grimm Aerosol Technik L-DMA model 5.400; M-DMA model 5500), condensation particle counter (CPC, Grimm Aerosol Technik 5.403), and a fast mobility particle sizer (FMPS-TSI, model 3091), were deployed to determine the size distributions of ultrafine particles. Comparisons were performed using atmospheric aerosol, as well as laboratory aerosol generated by nebulizing Milli-Q water (Millipore Corporation) and a water suspension of Fe2O3 in a Collison type atomizer. Results show that the DMPS generally measured higher particle number concentrations than the FMPS, above all for atmospheric aerosol compared to laboratory generated aerosol. With regard to size distribution, in both the atmospheric and laboratory-generated aerosols, the FMPS always showed a small peak around 10 nm, which was not shown by the M-DMPS. The agreement of the particle number concentration between the DMPS and FMPS was better in the 25-116 nm range for atmospheric aerosol, and in the 10-65 nm range for laboratory-generated aerosols. Since these instruments are scheduled to be run for air quality measurements and not only aerosol research purposes, there is an urgent need to establish working protocols in compliance with requirements with ISO 15900 requirements., Implications: Epidemiological studies have shown that high ultrafine particulate concentrations are associated with an increase in mortality. Measuring exposure against mass alone is not sufficient, but it is also necessary to consider exposure against number concentration. Therefore, continuous measurements of aerosol size and number concentrations are important. This paper provides a comparison between two different nanoparticle size spectrometers widely used in air quality measurements. We found significantly different total number particle concentrations and size distributions in both laboratory-generated and atmospheric aerosols. Results show that the DMPS generally measured higher particle number concentrations than the FMPS. Since these instruments are scheduled to be run for air quality measurements and not only aerosol research purposes, there is an urgent need to establish working protocols in compliance with ISO 15900 requirements.

The Venice Lagoon is exposed to atmospheric pollutants from industrial activities, thermoelectric power plants, petrochemical plants, incinerator, domestic heating, ship traffic, glass factories and vehicular emissions on the mainland. In 2005, construction began on the mobile dams (MOSE), one dam for each channel connecting the lagoon to the Adriatic Sea as a barrier against high tide. These construction works could represent an additional source of pollutants. PM10 samples were taken on random days between 2007 and 2010 at three different sites: Punta Sabbioni, Chioggia and Malamocco, located near the respective dam construction worksites. Chemical analyses of V, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Mo, Cd, Sb, Tl and Pb in PM10 samples were performed by Inductively coupled plasma-quadrupole mass spectrometry (ICP-QMS) and results were used to identify the main aerosol sources. The correlation of measured data with meteorology, and source apportionment, failed to highlight a contribution specifically associated to the emissions of the MOSE construction works. The comparison of the measurements at the three sites showed a substantial homogeneity of metal concentrations in the area. Source apportionment with principal component analysis (PCA) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) showed that a four principal factors model could describe the sources of metals in PM10. Three of them were assigned to specific sources in the area and one was characterised as a source of mixed origin (anthropogenic and crustal). A specific anthropogenic source of PM10 rich in Ni and Cr, active at the Chioggia site, was also identified.

Aerosol and gaseous pollution measurements were carried out at an urban background site in the south of Italy located near an industrial complex. Collection of 24 h samples of PM10 and PM2.5 and successive chemical quantification of metals were performed. Data were compared with measurements taken at a suburban background site, located at 25 km distance. The comparison showed the presence of an industrial contribution with a well defined chemical emission profile, similar, in terms of metals content, to urban emissions. As this made difficult the quantitative characterisation of the contribution of the two sources to atmospheric PM, a statistical method based on the treatment of data arising from high temporal resolution measurements was developed. Data were taken with a micrometeorological station based on an integrating nephelometer (Mie pDR-1200) for optical detection of PM2.5 concentration, with successive evaluation of vertical turbulent fluxes using the eddy-correlation method. Results show that the contribution from the two sources (urban emissions and industrial releases) have a very different behaviour, with the industrial contribution being present at high wind velocity with short concentration peaks (average duration 4 min) associated to strong positive and negative vertical fluxes. The estimated contribution to PM2.5 is 2.3% over long-term averages. The urban emissions are mainly present at low wind velocity, with longer concentration peaks in the morning and late evening hours, generally associated to small positive vertical fluxes. The characterisation of the contribution was performed using deposition velocity V(d) that is on average -3.5 mm s(-1) and has a diurnal pattern, with negligible values during the night and a minimum value of around -9 mm s(-1) late in the afternoon. Results show a correlation between V(d), friction velocity and wind velocity that could be the basis for a parameterisation of V(d) to be used in dispersion codes.

In this work the determination of the aspiration efficiency of personal aerosol samplers, commonly used in occupational exposure assessment, is investigated by means of CFD techniques. Specifically, it will be described a code to calculate the particle trajectories in a given flow field. At the present state the code considers only the effects of the mean flow field on the particle motion, whereas the turbulent diffusion effects are neglected. Comparisons with experimental measurements are also given in the framework of a research contract, supported by the European Community, with several experimental contributions from the participants. The main objective of the European research is to develop a new approach to experimentation with airborne particle flows, working on a reduced scale. This methodology has the advantage of allowing real-time aerosol determination and use of small wind tunnels, with a better experimental control. In this article we describe how the methodology has been verified using computational fluid dynamics. Experimental and numerical aspiration efficiencies have been compared and the influence of gravity and turbulence intensity in full and reduced scale has been investigated. The numerical techniques described here are in agreement with previous similar research and allow at least qualitative predictions of aspiration efficiency for real samplers, taking care of orientation from the incoming air flow. The major discrepancies among predicted and experimental results may be a consequence of bounce effects, which are very difficult to eliminate also by greasing the sampler surface.

Filter-collected aerosol samples in the PM 1 and PM 10 fractions and particle number concentration were measured during experimental campaigns in a rural area near Bologna (Italy) in the periods 10–21 February 2014 and 19–30 May 2014. Ice nuclei particle (INP) concentrations measured off-line showed prevalently higher average values in the morning with respect to the afternoon, in the PM 1 fraction with respect to PM 1–10 (with the exception of the first campaign, at S w = 1.01), and at water saturation ratio S w = 1.01 with respect to S w = 0.96. The aerosol in the coarse size range (1–10 μm) contributed significantly to the total INP concentration. In the first campaign, the average INP concentration in the coarse fraction was 80% of the total in the morning and 74% in the afternoon, at S w = 1.01. In the second campaign, the contribution of the coarse size fraction to the INP number concentration was lower. On the whole, the results showed that the freezing activity of aerosol diameters larger than 1 μm needs to be measured to obtain the entire INP population. Sahara dust events (SDEs) took place during both campaigns, in the periods 17–20 February and 21–23 May 2014. Results show that the averaged particle number concentration was higher during SDE than during no-Saharan dust events. A low correlation between INP and total aerosol number concentration was generally measured, except for SDEs observed in February, in which the correlation coefficient between aerosol concentration in the coarse fraction and INP in the same range, at water supersaturation, was about 0.8. Precipitation events influenced the aerosol concentration. In the February campaign, lower values of INP and particle concentrations were measured in case of heavy rain events. During the May campaign, an average number concentration of the aerosol in the range 0.5–10 μm was slightly higher than on days when no precipitation was measured, the rainfall intensity being low. Only in a few cases did we note a sharp drop in INP in the PM 10 fraction at S w = 1.01 (26 May, 8 a.m. and 1 p.m.; 27 May, 1 p.m.). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, the ice nucleating effectiveness of Arizona Test Dust (ATD), bare and coated with NaCl, not examined in previous published papers, was investigated. The ATD, NaCl coated ATD, and NaCl aerosols were generated by nebulizing water suspensions of bare ATD, ATD-NaCl and NaCl solution. Dried aerosols were sampled on black-gridded cellulose nitrate membrane filters for ice nuclei assessment through a Dynamic Filter Processing Chamber device (DFPC). After water evaporation ATD-NaCl droplets gave rise to ATD particles coated with NaCl. Processing of filters was performed at −22 °C and − 18 °C, under sub- and super-saturated conditions (water saturation ratio S w < 1 and S w > 1, respectively). Additional experiments were performed by modifying the storage conditions of the filters to simulate variation of atmospheric conditions, i.e. air temperature and relative humidity. For this purpose, the filters were housed in Petri dishes, with silica gel, at +10 °C and −10 °C. As silica gel can desorb water from the aerosol capillary at low temperatures, storage conditions with and without silica gel can simulate the aerosol pre-activation atmospheric process. The highest activated fraction (AF) and ice-active surface site density (n s) values were obtained for ATD at −22 °C and S w = 1.02. Results showed a decrease in the AF and n s between bare and ATD coated with NaCl both at S w = 1.02 and S w = 0.96 and for filters stored in the presence of silica gel. The results obtained show the great influence exerted by NaCl coated insoluble aerosol on the ice nucleation. • Results show a decrease in ice nucleation efficiency in case of NaCl coated ATD. • These results extend toward higher temperatures previous laboratory studies. • Preactivation process was simulated by storing the filters in low RH conditions. • Activated fraction increases from sub to super-saturated water conditions. Abstract: Brownian diffusion of aerosol particles was studied in microgravity conditions using a digital holographic velocimeter. Based on digital image processing, the observed volume, recorded on a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera, is reconstructed slice by slice in order to achieve a full focused volume. Three dimensional coordinates of the particles are retrieved by such procedures and particle trajectories are reconstructed by analysing the sequence of the particle position. We deduced that the displacement of particles in microgravity, due to Brownian motion, follows a Gaussian distribution, like at 1 g. Particle sizes obtained from SEM measurements were in good agreement with those calculated from the three dimensional trajectories provided by the holographic microscope. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
