This text presents a thematic dossier on racism, contextualizing this phenomenon in time and space. The volume brings together sixteen articles, signed by thirty authors from different scientific areas and institutional affiliations, because it is believed that such plurality can provide a comprehensive view of the phenomenon in order to bring more contributions to its study, framework and confrontation. Fifteen articles are dedicated to the Brazilian context (in general or to specific places such as Curitiba, Mato Grosso do Sul, Santa Catarina, Santa Maria [Rio Grande do Sul] and Sergipe) and one article focuses on the Argentine context (La Plata, Buenos Aires). Some texts expose theoretical reflections, while others are the result of research that analyses the school and training context. The content of this dossier will be useful for social scientists, educators and trainers of children, youth and adults, both in academia and in associations and/or engaged with the causes discussed here. • How eating together, known as commensality, influences food choice is unclear. • A USA national sample of adults described food choices with different co-eaters. • American adults chose more highly processed food when eating with friends vs others. • Minimally processed food choice when eating with friends may promote public health. The act of eating together, known as commensality, is an evolved mechanism of human life. Nonetheless, the association of commensality with food choice in adults is unclear, particularly in the United States where there is wide availability of highly processed food (e.g., ice cream, chips). The association may differ based on the social role of co-eaters, but this has not been fully examined. The present study was a cross-sectional survey of a nationally representative sample of the adult population in the United States (N = 750; M ag e = 45.10 ± 16.45; 62.7% White; 50.4% women) conducted online in January 2020. Participants were recruited from double-opt-in market research panels and answered questions regarding commensality, food choice, and sociodemographic information. American adults chose more highly processed food when eating with friends compared to all other co-eaters. Adults with higher versus lower body mass index chose more highly processed food when eating alone. Adults with less versus greater income chose more highly processed food when eating with others, and younger versus older adults, Black versus White Americans, and women versus men chose more highly processed food when eating with others and alone. By considering intersections among commensality, food choice, and culture in adults, social scientists and consumers can identify social eating behaviors that may undermine or support health-promoting dietary change. The primary goal of this paper is to provide a balanced perspective for understanding inequality in research productivity among Korean scholars in humanities and social sciences. Specifically, we examine cumulative advantage over the careers of a sample of Korean social scientists and humanities scholars ( N = 8933). Descriptive analyses indicated that the level of inequality among junior humanists and social scientists rivals that found among similar scholars in the USA, and among engineers and natural scientists in Korea. Inequality indices examined over 25 years reveal a U-shaped trajectory for social scientists and an L-shaped trajectory for humanities scholars. In both disciplines, female scholars averaged fewer publications than their male counterparts at any given time in their respective careers. Furthermore, according to results from generalized estimating equations, age at receipt of doctorate and years to doctoral degree completion were negatively associated with the number of publications. The prestige of scholars' undergraduate and graduate schools also appears to be associated with productivity, though to a greater extent in the social sciences than in the humanities. The results imply that the incentive structure in Korean academia does not necessarily lead to an increase in the number of publications. Rather, it appears that, in the later career stages, activities outside the university become more important than scholarly performance, perhaps due to the tradition of basing wage and promotion systems on seniority. Over 25 years ago, the ‘wicked problems’ concept was introduced into forestry to describe the increasingly complex work situations faced by many natural resource management (NRM) professionals and at the same time the demand and frequency of public involvement in NRM issues also grew. Research on the impact of these changes for NRM professionals resulted in many studies calling for NRM professionals to learn a host of new social science-related skills and knowledge. Twenty years later, research continues to show that NRM professionals are struggling to develop these ‘new’ skills and calls for integrating the social sciences in NRM education and practice endure. This paper discusses the challenge of integrating social science skills and knowledge into NRM public involvement practice and continuing professional education. The paper argues for a reconsideration of how social science theories relate to professionals’ practical theories and concludes with some implications and proposals for NRM continuing professional education. ABSTRACT: The childhood invention of imaginary worlds or paracosms may prepare for creative endeavor in adulthood. To test hypotheses concerning the incidence of childhood worldplay and its connection to mature work, this study queried MacArthur Fellows, selected for their creativity, and compared them to Michigan State University (MSU) students. Whereas previous research declared paracosm play to be uncommon and associated with the arts, this study found it reasonably common among MSU students (3%–12%), about twice as frequent among MacArthur Fellows (5%–26%), and prevalent in the backgrounds of scientists and social scientists as well as artists. A majority of Fellows with assessed worldplay in childhood reported connections between early paracosm play and mature endeavor. Childhood worldplay deserves further study as early apprenticeship in creative imagination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
