Gaseous acetic acid is formed under conditions of storage of historic paper objects. Its presence not only promotes hydrolytic cleavage of cellulose, but also causes acetylation of the cellulosic material to very small degree. The acetylation reaction proceeds under ambient conditions and without catalyst. Different analytical methods were used to prove the presence of organic acetates on cellulosic paper matrices. DESI-MS in combination with 2 H-isotopic labeling showed the presence of sugar fragments with different acetylation patterns. A method based on Zemplen saponification was applied and worked also in the presence of a large excess of acetic acid and/or inorganic acetates. The acetylation effect was quantified for model papers and original, naturally aged paper samples. While cellulose acetylation was clearly proven to be another general pathway of paper aging, further studies of this acetylation phenomenon are needed with regard to conservational aspects and suitable paper storage conditions., (Copyright © 2022 The Authors. Acetate ion was widely used in pH buffer to control pH environment. Here we firstly found that acetate ion had mimic peroxidase activity. Acetate ions are capable of catalyzing the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide and play a similar role to that of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Acetate catalyzes the oxidation of tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by H 2 O 2 , which is the product of the reaction of glucose and glucose oxidase. A colorimetric sensor for H 2 O 2 and glucose was developed using acetate ions. The linear regression equation for H 2 O 2 was A = 0.0029 C + 0.0530 (C (μmolL -1 ), R = 0.9978), and the detection limit was 3.0 μmolL -1 , whereas that for glucose was A = 0.0021 C + 0.0709 (C (μmol L -1 ), R = 0.9977), and the detection limit was 4.0 μmol L -1 . Moreover, the proposed method was successfully applied for the detection of H 2 O 2 in human urine and glucose in human serum; thus, the proposed method could be used for the diagnosis of illness or disease. Microbial anodes were formed under polarization at -0.3 V/SCE on graphite plates in effluents from a pulp and paper mill. The bioanodes formed with the addition of acetate led to the highest current densities (up to 6A/m(2)) but were then unable to oxidize the raw effluent efficiently (0.5A/m(2)). In contrast, the bioanodes formed without acetate addition were fully able to oxidize the organic matter contained in the effluent, giving up to 4.5A/m(2) in continuous mode. Bacterial communities showed less bacterial diversity for the acetate-fed bioanodes compared to those formed in raw effluents. Deltaproteobacteria were the most abundant taxonomic group, with a high diversity for bioanodes formed without acetate addition but with almost 100% Desulfuromonas for the acetate-fed bioanodes. Solid substrate cultivation of thermophilic, anaerobic bacteria offers an alternative production method for many bio-based chemicals; however the process must be optimized for each substrate-organism fermentation. The effects of initial substrate moisture content (SMC, 30%, 50% and 70% wet-basis), supplemental nutrient concentration (SNC, 12%, 50% and 100%) and duration of cultivation time (6, 10 and 14 days), on product formation (lactate, ethanol and acetate) by Clostridium thermocellum 27405 were examined during growth on paper pulp sludge. Water activities at moisture contents above 30% wet-basis were essentially identical ( approximately 0.99), yet the water contents differed significantly, and affected the metabolic activity of C. thermocellum. Increases in initial substrate moisture content from 50% to 70% for cultures supplemented with 50% or 100% nutrients resulted in a 75-145 mM increase in total end products. At 70% SMC, the addition of 100% SNC generated a 56% increase in product formation above the addition of 50% nutrient supplementation. Increases in the quantity of free water present in the solid substrate cultivation system up to the water holding capacity of the paper pulp sludge led to improved performance of this anaerobic bacterium. While nutrient supplementation is common in the form of salts for many aerobic microorganisms, efficient metabolism for anaerobic C. thermocellum grown in SSC was highly dependent on added salts, vitamins and reducing agents. Further studies are needed to determine if this is a general effect for other anaerobes grown in solid substrate cultures.

Treating ground bagasse or Southern yellow pine in the biodegradable ionic liquid (IL), choline acetate ([Cho][OAc]), at 100°C for 24h led to dissolution of hemicellulose and lignin, while leaving the cellulose pulp undissolved, with a 54.3% (bagasse) or 34.3% (pine) reduction in lignin content. The IL solution of the dissolved biopolymers can be separated from the undissolved particles either by addition of water (20 wt% of IL) followed by filtration or by centrifugation. Hemicellulose (19.0 wt% of original bagasse, 10.2 wt% of original pine, containing 14-18 wt% lignin) and lignin (5.0 wt% of original bagasse, 6.0 wt% of original pine) could be subsequently precipitated. The pulp obtained from [Cho][OAc] treatment can be rapidly dissolved in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (e.g., 17 h for raw bagasse vs. 7h for pulp), and precipitated as cellulose-rich material (CRM) with a lower lignin content (e.g., 23.6% for raw bagasse vs. 10.6% for CRM)., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. The reductive removal of haloacetic acids (HAAs) in a three-dimensional electrochemical continuous reactor with Pd-granular activated carbon (Pd-GAC) particles as fixed filler and Pd-modified carbon paper (Pd-C) as cathode was studied in this research. Pd-C electrode was prepared from PdCl2 via electrodeposition onto carbon paper. Pd-GAC particles were prepared by the impregnation of Pd(2+) ions onto GAC. Efficient electrocatalytic reduction of HAAs in this reactor was exhibited. Effects of current density, initial HHAs concentration, and hydraulic retention time on the HHAs removal were investigated. Under the current density of 0.3 mA/cm(2), HAAs with initial concentration of 120 μg/L were reduced to be less than 60 μg/L with hydraulic retention time of 20 min. Electron transfer and HAAs diffusion both played an important role in controlling the electro-reduction process under the conditions of current density less than 0.6 mA/cm(2) with an initial HAAs concentration ranging from 120 to 600 μg/L. However, the HAAs diffusion became the primary rate-limiting step when the current density was higher than 0.6 mA/cm(2). The Pd(0) and Pd(2+) species were detected by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Letermovir is a newly developed antiviral agent used for the prophylaxis of human cytomegalovirus infections in patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation. This novel anti-cytomegalovirus drug, used for the prophylaxis of cytomegalovirus reactivation until approximately 200 days after transplantation, effectively reduces the risk of clinically significant cytomegalovirus infection. No human counterpart exists for the terminase complex; letermovir is virus specific and lacks some toxicities previously observed with other anti-cytomegalovirus drugs, such as cytopenia and nephrotoxicity. The absolute bioavailability of letermovir in healthy individuals is estimated to be 94% based on a population-pharmacokinetic analysis. In contrast, oral administration of letermovir to patients undergoing hematopoietic cell transplantation results in lower exposure than that in healthy individuals. Renal or hepatic impairment does not influence the intrinsic clearance of letermovir. Co-administration of letermovir may alter the plasma concentrations of other drugs, including itself, as it acts as a substrate and inhibitor/inducer of several drug-metabolizing enzymes and transporters. In particular, attention should be paid to the drug-drug interactions between letermovir and calcineurin inhibitors or azole antifungal agents, which are commonly used in patients undergoing hematopoietic cell transplantation. A new rhodamine functionalized fluorogenic Schiff base CS was synthesized and its colorimetric and fluorescence responses toward various metal ions were explored. The sensor exhibited highly selective and sensitive colorimetric and "off-on" fluorescence response towards Al(3+) in the presence of other competing metal ions. These spectral changes are large enough in the visible region of the spectrum and thus enable naked-eye detection. Studies proved that the formation of CS-Al(3+) complex is fully reversible and can sense to AcO(-)/F(-) via dissociation. Dermatitis is reported from slimicides added to wood pulp slurry in a paper mill. The active constituents of the slimicides involved were bis-1,4-bromoacetoxy-2-butene and 2,3-dichloro-4-bromotetrahydrothiophene-1,1-dioxide. Wood pulp slimicides include many chemicals which are highly irritant and potentially sensitizing to the skin.
