Experiments investigating the properties of deeply supercooled liquid water are needed to develop a comprehensive understanding of water's anomalous properties. One approach involves transiently heating nanoscale water films into the supercooled region for several nanoseconds at a time and then interrogating the water films after they have quenched to cryogenic temperatures. To relate the results obtained with this approach to other experiments and simulations on supercooled water, it is important to understand how closely the quenched structure tracks the (metastable) equilibrium structure of water as a function of the transient heating temperature. A key step involves quantifying the extent to which water that is transiently heated to ambient temperatures [hyperquenched water (HQW)] subsequently relaxes toward the structure of low-density amorphous (LDA) ice as it cools. We analyzed the infrared reflection–absorption spectra of LDA, HQW, and crystalline ice films to determine their complex indices of refraction. With this information, we estimate that HQW retains ∼50%–60% of a structural motif characteristic of water at high temperatures with the balance comprised of a low-temperature motif. This result, along with results from x-ray diffraction experiments on water and amorphous ices, allows one to quantify the fraction of the high-temperature motif at approximately zero pressure as a function of temperature from 150 to 350 K. We have examined the structure of supercooled liquid D2O as a function of temperature between 185 and 255 K using pulsed laser heating to rapidly heat and cool the sample on a nanosecond timescale. The liquid structure can be represented as a linear combination of two structural motifs, with a transition between them described by a logistic function centered at 218 K with a width of 10 K. The relaxation to a metastable state, which occurred prior to crystallization, exhibited nonexponential kinetics with a rate that was dependent on the initial structural configuration. When the temperature is scaled by the temperature of maximum density, which is an isostructural point of the isotopologues, the structural transition and the non-equilibrium relaxation kinetics of D2O agree remarkably well with those for H2O. We measure the isothermal crystallization kinetics of amorphous acetonitrile films using molecular beam dosing and reflection adsorption infrared spectroscopy techniques. Experiments on a graphene covered Pt(111) substrate revealed that the crystallization rate slows dramatically during long time periods and that the overall kinetics cannot be described by a simple application of the Avrami equation. The crystallization kinetics also have a thickness dependence with the thinner films crystallizing much slower than the thicker ones. Additional experiments showed that decane layers at both the substrate and vacuum interfaces can also affect the crystallization rates. A comparison of the crystallization rates for CH3CN and CD3CN films showed only an isotope effect of ∼1.09. When amorphous films were deposited on a crystalline film, the crystalline layer did not act as a template for the formation of a crystalline growth front. These overall results suggest that the crystallization kinetics are complicated, indicating the possibility of multiple nucleation and growth mechanisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The interaction of methanol with iron oxide surfaces is of interest due to its potential in hydrogen storage and from a fundamental perspective as a chemical probe of reactivity. We present here a study examining the adsorption and reaction of methanol on magnetite Fe3O4(001) at cryogenic temperatures using a combination of temperature programmed desorption, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning tunneling microscopy. The methanol desorption profile from Fe3O4(001) is complex, exhibiting peaks at 140 K, 173 K, 230 K, and 268 K, corresponding to the desorption of intact methanol, as well as peaks at 341 K and 495 K due to the reaction of methoxy intermediates. The saturation of a monolayer of methanol corresponds to ∼5 molecules/unit cell (u.c.), which is slightly higher than the number of surface octahedral iron atoms of 4/u.c. We probe the kinetics and thermodynamics of the desorption of molecular methanol using inversion analysis. The deconvolution of the complex desorption profile into individual peaks allows for calculations of both the desorption energy and the prefactor of each feature. The initial 0.7 methanol/u.c. reacts to form methoxy and hydroxy intermediates at 180 K, which remain on the surface above room temperature after intact methanol has desorbed. The methoxy species react via one of two channels, a recombination reaction with surface hydroxyls to form additional methanol at ∼350 K and a disproportionation reaction to form methanol and formaldehyde at ∼500 K. Only 20% of the methoxy species undergo the disproportionation reaction, with most of them reacting via the 350 K pathway. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The growth rate of crystalline ice (CI) in amorphous solid water (ASW) films was investigated using reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy. Two different experiments were set up to measure rates of the crystallization front propagation from the underlying crystalline template upward and from the vacuum interface downward. In one set of experiments, layers of ASW (5% D2O in H2O) were grown on a CI template and capped with a decane layer. In isothermal experiments from 140 to 150 K, crystallization was observed from the onset (no induction time) and the extent of crystallization increased linearly with time. In a second set of experiments, uncapped ASW films without a CI template were studied. The films were created by placing a 100 ML isotopic layer (5% D2O in H2O) at various positions in a 1000 ML ASW (H2O) film. The CI growth rates obtained from the two configurations (capped films with a CI template and uncapped films without a CI template) are in quantitative agreement. The results support the idea that for ASW films in a vacuum, a crystalline layer forms at the surface that then acts as a CI template for a growth front that moves downward into the film. The crystallization kinetics of transiently heated, nanoscale water films were investigated for 188 K < Tpulse < 230 K, where Tpulse is the maximum temperature obtained during a heat pulse. The water films, which had thicknesses ranging from approximately 15–30 nm, were adsorbed on a Pt(111) single crystal and heated with ∼10 ns laser pulses, which produced heating and cooling rates of ∼109–1010 K/s in the adsorbed water films. Because the ice growth rates have been measured independently, the ice nucleation rates could be determined by modeling the observed crystallization kinetics. The experiments show that the nucleation rate goes through a maximum at T = 216 K ± 4 K, and the rate at the maximum is 1029±1 m−3 s−1. The maximum nucleation rate reported here for flat, thin water films is consistent with recent measurements of the nucleation rate in nanometer-sized water drops at comparable temperatures. However, the nucleation rate drops rapidly at lower temperatures, which is different from the nearly temperature-independent rates observed for the nanometer-sized drops. At T ∼ 189 K, the nucleation rate for the current experiments is a factor of ∼104−5 smaller than the rate at the maximum. The nucleation rate also decreases for Tpulse > 220 K, but the transiently heated water films are not very sensitive to the smaller nucleation rates at higher temperatures. The crystallization kinetics are consistent with a "classical" nucleation and growth mechanism indicating that there is an energetic barrier for deeply supercooled water to convert to ice. Isotopic exchange reactions in mixed D2O and H2O amorphous solid water (ASW) films were investigated using reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy. Nanoscale films composed of 5% D2O in H2O were deposited on Pt(111) and graphene covered Pt(111) substrates. At 130 K, we find that the reaction is strongly dependent on the substrate with the H/D exchange being significantly more rapid on the Pt(111) surface than on graphene. At 140 K, the films eventually crystallize with the final products on the two substrates being primarily HOD molecule on Pt(111) and a mixture of HOD and unreacted D2O on graphene. We demonstrate by pre-dosing H2 and O2 on Pt(111) that the observed differences in reactivity on the two substrates are likely due to the formation of hydrogen ions at the Pt(111) surface that are not formed on graphene. Once formed the mobile protons move through the ASW overlayer to initiate the H/D exchange reaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A study imaged identical regions of partially reduced TiO2(11) surfaces with bridge-bonded oxygen vacancy ([BBO.sub.V]) concentrations of 10% ML using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) before and after dosing H2O at ambient temperature (300 K). Hydrogen hopping along the [001] direction is observed at ambient temperature, with a strong preference for [OH.sub.B] (10x) hydrogen motion.

Physisorption of N(sub 2), O(sub 2) and CO was studied on fully oxidized TiO(sub 2)(110) using beam reflection and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) techniques. Sticking coefficients for all three molecules are nearly equal and approximately independent of coverage suggesting that adsorption occurs through a precursor-mediated mechanism.

The crystallization of amorphous solid water (ASW) nanoscale films was investigated using reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy. Two ASW film configurations were studied. In one case the ASW film was deposited on top of and capped with a decane layer ("sandwich" configuration). In the other case, the ASW film was deposited on top of a decane layer and not capped ("no cap" configuration). Crystallization of ASW films in the "sandwich" configuration is about eight times slower than in the "no cap." Selective placement of an isotopic layer (5% D2O in H2O) at various positions in an ASW (H2O) film was used to determine the crystallization mechanism. In the "sandwich" configuration, the crystallization kinetics were independent of the isotopic layer placement whereas in the "no cap" configuration the closer the isotopic layer was to the vacuum interface, the earlier the isotopic layer crystallized. These results are consistent with a mechanism whereby the decane overlayer suppresses surface nucleation and provide evidence that the observed ASW crystallization in "sandwich" films is the result of uniform bulk nucleation. Nanometer thick layers of Mg metal vapor deposited onto a polycrystalline gold substrate at 22K with and without O2 multilayers are examined. Auger electron spectroscopy and temperature-desorption of N2 are used to estimate the Mg oxidation state and the surface area of the deposits immediately after deposition and following annealing.

A series of molecules including of CH4, CH3Cl, CH2Cl2, CHCl3, and CCl4 are used as probes to test the chemical reactivity of the FeO(111) surface. The temperature-programmed desorption spectra show no evidence of dissociative adsorption or chemical reaction between the substrate and the adsorbates.

The ability to grow thin MgO(100) films of quality approaching that of vacuum-cleaved MgO(100) is demonstrated using low-energy electron diffraction (LEED). The results show that the order of the MgO(100) surfaces depends dramatically on the MgO films thickness as illustrated by LEED.

Supercooled water may provide clues to the anomalous properties of its usual liquid state. Certain theories preclude the existence of supercooled liquid below 22 K. The diffusivity of amorphous ice has been determined by the study of isotope intermixing in films of less than 50 nanometres in thickness. The magnitude and temperature dependence of the diffusivity is consistent with the concept that amorphous solid water melts into an extension of normal liquid water prior to crystallizing at 160 K.

A pulsed laser heating system has been developed that enables investigations of the dynamics and kinetics of nanoscale liquid films and liquid/solid interfaces on the nanosecond time scale in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV). Details of the design, implementation, and characterization of a nanosecond pulsed laser system for transiently heating nanoscale films are described. Nanosecond pulses from a Nd:YAG laser are used to rapidly heat thin films of adsorbed water or other volatile materials on a clean, well-characterized Pt(111) crystal in UHV. Heating rates of ~1010 K/s for temperature increases of ~100-200 K are obtained. Subsequent rapid cooling (~5 × 109 K/s) quenches the film, permitting insitu, post-heating analysis using a variety of surface science techniques. Lateral variations in the laser pulse energy are ~±2.7% leading to a temperature uncertainty of ~±4.4 K for a temperature jump of 200 K. Initial experiments with the apparatus demonstrate that crystalline ice films initially held at 90 K can be rapidly transformed into liquid water films with T > 273 K. No discernable recrystallization occurs during the rapid cooling back to cryogenic temperatures. In contrast, amorphous solid water films heated below the melting point rapidly crystallize. The nanosecond pulsed laser heating system can prepare nanoscale liquid and supercooled liquid films that persist for nanoseconds per heat pulse in an UHV environment, enabling experimental studies of a wide range of phenomena in liquids and at liquid/solid interfaces. We have examined the adsorption of the weakly bound species N2, O2, CO, and Kr on the (√37 × √37)R25.3° water monolayer on Pt(111) using a combination of molecular beam dosing, infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy, and temperature programmed desorption. In contrast to multilayer crystalline ice, the adsorbate-free water monolayer is characterized by a lack of dangling OH bonds protruding into the vacuum (H-up). Instead, the non-hydrogen-bonded OH groups are oriented downward (H-down) to maximize their interaction with the underlying Pt(111) substrate. Adsorption of Kr and O2 have little effect on the structure and vibrational spectrum of the "√37" water monolayer while adsorption of both N2, and CO are effective in "flipping" H-down water molecules into an H-up configuration. This "flipping" occurs readily upon adsorption at temperatures as low as 20 K and the water monolayer transforms back to the H-down, √37 structure upon adsorbate desorption above 35 K, indicating small energy differences and barriers between the H-down and H-up configurations. The results suggest that converting water in the first layer from H-down to Hup is mediated by the electrostatic interactions between the water and the adsorbates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this (Paper I) and the companion paper (Paper II; R. May, R. Smith, and B. Kay, J. Chem. Phys. 138, 104502 (2013)), we investigate the mechanisms for the release of trapped gases from underneath amorphous solid water (ASW) films. In prior work, we reported the episodic release of trapped gases in concert with the crystallization of ASW, a phenomenon that we termed the 'molecular volcano.' The observed abrupt desorption is due to the formation of cracks that span the film to form a connected pathway for release. In this paper, we utilize the 'molecular volcano' desorption peak to characterize the formation of crystallization-induced cracks. We find that the crack length distribution is independent of the trapped gas (Ar, Kr, Xe, CH4, N2, O2, or CO). Selective placement of the inert gas layer is used to show that cracks form near the top of the film and propagate downward into the film. Isothermal experiments reveal that, after some induction time, cracks propagate linearly in time with an Arrhenius dependent velocity corresponding to an activation energy of 54 kJ/mol. This value is consistent with the crystallization growth rates reported by others and establishes a direct connection between crystallization growth rate and the crack propagation rate. A two-step model in which nucleation and crystallization occurs in an induction zone near the top of the film followed by the propagation of a crystallization/crack front into the film is in good agreement with the temperature programmed desorption results. In this (Paper II) and the preceding companion paper (Paper I; R. May, R. Smith, and B. Kay, J. Chem. Phys. 138, 104501 (2013)), we investigate the mechanisms for the release of trapped gases from underneath amorphous solid water (ASW) films. In Paper I, we focused on the low coverage regime where the release mechanism is controlled by crystallization-induced cracks formed in the ASW overlayer. In that regime, the results were largely independent of the particular gas underlayer. Here in Paper II, we focus on the high coverage regime where new desorption pathways become accessible prior to ASW crystallization. In contrast to the results for the low coverage regime (Paper I), the release mechanism is a function of the multilayer thickness and composition, displaying dramatically different behavior between Ar, Kr, Xe, CH4, N2, O2, and CO. Two primary desorption pathways are observed. The first occurs between 100 and 150 K and manifests itself as sharp, extremely narrow desorption peaks. Temperature programmed desorption is utilized to show that these abrupt desorption bursts are due to pressure induced structural failure of the ASW overlayer. The second pathway occurs at low temperature (typically <100 K) where broad desorption peaks are observed. Desorption through this pathway is attributed to diffusion through pores formed during ASW deposition. The extent of desorption and the line shape of the low temperature desorption peak are dependent on the substrate on which the gas underlayer is deposited. Angle dependent ballistic deposition of ASW is used to vary the porosity of the overlayer and strongly supports the hypothesis that the low temperature desorption pathway is due to porosity that is templated into the ASW overlayer by the underlayer during deposition. We study the diffusivity of three-methylpentane (3MP) using the permeation of inert gases (Ar, Kr, Xe) through the supercooled liquid created when initially amorphous overlayers are heated above Tg. We find that the permeation rates for all of the gases have non-Arrhenius temperature dependences that are well described by the Vogel-Fulcher-Tamman equation. Comparison with the literature viscosity shows that the Stokes-Einstein equation breaks down at temperatures approaching Tg. The fractional Stokes-Einstein equation, D ∝ (T/η)n, does fit the permeation data, albeit with different values of n for each gas. There is qualitative agreement with the Stokes-Einstein equation in that the permeation rate decreases with increasing radius of the rare gas probe, but the small differences in radii significantly underestimate the observed differences in the permeation rates. Instead the permeation rates are better correlated with the rare gas-3MP interaction energy than with the atomic radius. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Six H-bonds in the periodic di-interstitial structure that accounts for scanning tunneling microscope images of '[formula]' and '[formula]' wetting layers on Pt(111) are some 0.2 Å shorter than H-bonds are in ice Ih. According to a broadly obeyed correlation, this density functional theory result implies a stringent test of the di-interstitial motif, namely the presence of an OH-stretch band red-shifted from that of ice Ih by more than 1000 cm-1. Infrared absorption spectra satisfy the test, in showing a feature centered at about 1965 cm-1, which grows in as deposited water orders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We describe in detail a diffusion model used to simulate inert gas transport through supercooled liquid overlayers. In recent work, the transport of the inert gas has been shown to be an effective probe of the diffusivity of supercooled liquid methanol in the experimentally challenging regime near the glass transition temperature. The model simulations accurately and quantitatively describe the inert gas permeation desorption spectra. The simulation results are used to validate universal scaling relationships between the diffusivity, overlayer thickness, and the temperature ramp rate for isothermal and temperature programmed desorption. From these scaling relationships we derive simple equations from which the diffusivity can be obtained using the peak desorption time or temperature for an isothermal or set of TPD experiments, respectively, without numerical simulation. The results presented here demonstrate that the permeation of gases through amorphous overlayers has the potential to be a powerful technique to obtain diffusivity data in deeply supercooled liquids. We present an experimental technique to measure the diffusivity of supercooled liquids at temperatures near their Tg. The approach uses the permeation of inert gases through supercooled liquid overlayers as a measure of the diffusivity of the supercooled liquid itself. The desorption spectra of the probe gas are used to extract the low temperature supercooled liquid diffusivities. In the preceding companion paper, we derived equations using ideal model simulations from which the diffusivity could be extracted using the desorption peak times for isothermal or peak temperatures for temperature programmed desorption experiments. Here, we discuss the experimental conditions for which these equations are valid and demonstrate their utility using amorphous methanol with Ar, Kr, Xe, and CH4 as probe gases. The approach offers a new method by which the diffusivities of supercooled liquids can be measured in the experimentally challenging temperature regime near the glass transition temperature. Molecular beam techniques, temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), and reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) are used to explore the relationship between krypton permeation through and the self-diffusivity of supercooled liquid methanol at temperatures (100–115 K) near the glass transition temperature, Tg (103 K). Layered films, consisting of CH3OH and CD3OH, are deposited on top of a monolayer of Kr on a graphene covered Pt(111) substrate at 25 K. Concurrent Kr TPD and RAIRS spectra are acquired during the heating of the composite film to temperatures above Tg. The CO vibrational stretch is sensitive to the local molecular environment and is used to determine the supercooled liquid diffusivity from the intermixing of the isotopic layers. We find that the Kr permeation and the diffusivity of the supercooled liquid are directly and quantitatively correlated. These results validate the rare-gas permeation technique as a tool for probing the diffusivity of supercooled liquids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Molecular beam techniques are used to create layered nanoscale composite films of amorphous methanol and ethanol at 20 K. The films are then heated, and temperature programed desorption and infrared spectroscopy are used to observe the mixing, desorption, and crystallization behavior from the initially unmixed amorphous layers. We find that the initially unmixed amorphous layers completely intermix to form a deeply supercooled liquid solution after heating above Tg. Modeling of the desorption kinetics shows that the supercooled liquid films behave as ideal solutions. The desorption rates from the supercooled and crystalline phases are then used to derive the binary solid-liquid phase diagram. Deviations from ideal solution desorption behavior are observed when the metastable supercooled solution remains for longer times in regions of the phase diagram when thermodynamically favored crystallization occurs. In those cases, the finite lifetime of the metastable solutions results in the precipitation of crystalline solids. Finally, in very thick films at temperatures and compositions where a stable liquid should exist, we unexpectedly observe deviations from ideal solution behavior. Visual inspection of the sample indicates that these apparent departures from ideality arise from dewetting of the liquid film from the substrate. We conclude that compositionally tailored nanoscale amorphous films provide a useful means for preparing and examining deeply supercooled solutions in metastable regions of the phase diagram. The adsorption and desorption kinetics of N2 on porous amorphous solid water (ASW) films were studied using molecular beam techniques, temperature programed desorption (TPD), and reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy. The ASW films were grown on Pt(111) at 23 K by ballistic deposition from a collimated H2O beam at various incident angles to control the film porosity. The experimental results show that the N2 condensation coefficient is essentially unity until near saturation, independent of the ASW film thickness indicating that N2 transport within the porous films is rapid. The TPD results show that the desorption of a fixed dose of N2 shifts to higher temperature with ASW film thickness. Kinetic analysis of the TPD spectra shows that a film thickness rescaling of the coverage-dependent activation energy curve results in a single master curve. Simulation of the TPD spectra using this master curve results in a quantitative fit to the experiments over a wide range of ASW thicknesses (up to 1000 layers, ∼0.5 μm). The success of the rescaling model indicates that N2 transport within the porous film is rapid enough to maintain a uniform distribution throughout the film on a time scale faster than desorption. The adsorption, desorption, and diffusion kinetics of N2 on thick (up to ∼9 μm) porous films of amorphous solid water (ASW) films were studied using molecular beam techniques and temperature programmed desorption. Porous ASW films were grown on Pt(111) at low temperature (<30 K) from a collimated H2O beam at glancing incident angles. In thin films (<1 μm), the desorption kinetics are well described by a model that assumes rapid and uniform N2 distribution throughout the film. In thicker films (>1 μm), N2 adsorption at 27 K results in a nonuniform distribution, where most of N2 is trapped in the outer region of the film. Redistribution of N2 can be induced by thermal annealing. The apparent activation energy for this process is ∼7 kJ/mol, which is approximately half of the desorption activation energy at the corresponding coverage. Preadsorption of Kr preferentially adsorbs onto the highest energy binding sites, thereby preventing N2 from trapping in the outer region of the film which facilitates N2 transport deeper into the porous film. Despite the onset of limited diffusion, the adsorption kinetics are efficient, precursor mediated, and independent of film thickness. An adsorption mechanism is proposed, in which a high-coverage N2 front propagates into a pore by the rapid transport of physisorbed second layer N2 species on top of the first surface bound layer. The growth of crystalline ice films on Pt(111) and Pd(111) is investigated using temperature programed desorption of the water films and of rare gases adsorbed on the water films. The water monolayer wets both Pt(111) and Pd(111) at all temperatures investigated [e.g., 20–155 K for Pt(111)]. However, crystalline ice films grown at higher temperatures (e.g., T>135 K) do not wet the monolayer. Similar results are obtained for crystalline ice films of D2O and H2O. Amorphous water films, which initially wet the surface, crystallize and dewet, exposing the water monolayer when they are annealed at higher temperatures. Thinner films crystallize and dewet at lower temperatures than thicker films. For samples sputtered with energetic Xe atoms to prepare ice crystallites surrounded by bare Pt(111), subsequent annealing of the films causes water molecules to diffuse off the ice crystallites to reform the water monolayer. A simple model suggests that, for crystalline films grown at high temperatures, the ice crystallites are initially widely separated with typical distances between crystallites of ∼14 nm or more. The experimental results are consistent with recent theory and experiments suggesting that the molecules in the water monolayer form a surface with no dangling OH bonds or lone pair electrons, giving rise to a hydrophobic water monolayer on both Pt(111) and Pd(111). We have measured the desorption of seven small n-alkanes (CNH2N+2, N=1–4,6,8,10) from the Pt(111) and C(0001) surfaces by temperature programed desorption. We compare these results to our recent study of the desorption kinetics of these molecules on MgO(100) [J. Chem. Phys. 122, 164708 (2005)]. There we showed an increase in the desorption preexponential factor by several orders of magnitude with increasing n-alkane chain length and a linear desorption energy scaling with a small y-intercept value. We suggest that the significant increase in desorption prefactor with chain length is not particular to the MgO(100) surface, but is a general effect for desorption of the small n-alkanes. This argument is supported by statistical mechanical arguments for the increase in the entropy gain of the molecules upon desorption. In this work, we demonstrate that this hypothesis holds true on both a metal surface and a graphite surface. We observe an increase in prefactor by five orders of magnitude over the range of n-alkane chain lengths studied here. On each surface, the desorption energies of the n-alkanes are found to increase linearly with the molecule chain length and have a small y-intercept value. Prior results of other groups have yielded a linear desorption energy scaling with chain length that has unphysically large y-intercept values. We demonstrate that by allowing the prefactor to increase according to our model, a reanalysis of their data resolves this y-intercept problem to some degree. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
