School algebra serves as the language of mathematics and a foundational subject for learning advanced mathematics courses. This makes developing learners' proficiency in algebra the most desirable instructional goal of school mathematics. Despite having such importance emphasis, however, studies indicate that the vast majority of learners are characterised by inadequate mathematics proficiency levels in general and in the algebra syllabus topics in particular. Consequently, this quasi-experimental study attempted to investigate the efficacy of using discourse-based instruction as an instructional approach to developing proficiency in algebra unit topics. One hundred and six (N = 106) Grade 11 learners participated in the study and were randomly grouped into an experimental group (n = 52) and a control group (n = 54). Using a test instrument that consisted of 24 Rasch-validated items, both pre-test and post-test data were collected from both groups under similar conditions. The Mann-Whitney U statistical analysis of the pre-test data revealed no significant difference between the control and experimental groups. The Mann-Whitney U analysis performed on the post-test data demonstrated that the experimental group scored significantly higher in the post-test scores when compared to the control group after the intervention. The study findings provided evidence of the efficacy of discourse-based instruction over teacher-centred instruction for developing learners' algebra proficiency.

This exploratory study aimed at developing a dyslexia assessment tool in the Amharic language and to collect initial reliability and validity data on the tool designed to identify dyslexia in Grade 3. The developed battery consists of 10 tests. Data were collected from 121 Amharic-speaking children, aged 9-12 years. Evidence of construct validity was obtained through factor analyses. Results showed that letter-naming was the most significant predictor of word-level literacy (WLL) skills in Amharic, followed by word-reading measures. Factor analysis revealed four factors: phonological-naming and decoding, comprehension, verbal short-term memory, and orthographic processing. In Amharic, which uses an alphasyllabary writing system, letter-naming is not only a vital WLL skill but also serves as a necessary foundational prerequisite for the acquisition of other WLL skills. The findings substantiate the account that even if the underlying cognitive factor responsible for dyslexia is similar among humans, its manifestations vary across languages and orthographies.

Although most children with autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders live in low- and middle-income countries, assessment tools are lacking in these settings. This study aims to culturally adapt and validate two questionnaires for use in Ethiopia: the Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist and the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory™ Family Impact Module. Both questionnaires were adapted to be suitable for administration in low-literate caregivers and translated using the backward translation procedure. The factor structure, reliability and validity were investigated using caregiver-reports on 300 children with neurodevelopmental disorders or physical health conditions. Confirmatory factor analysis of the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory™ Family Impact Module data indicated an acceptable fit of the hypothesised eight-factor structure. Internal consistency was high for both measures. Test--retest reliability was excellent for the Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist and moderate to excellent for the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory™ Family Impact Module. Both questionnaires demonstrated adequate known-group validity, with moderate to very large effect size group differences between case and control groups. The questionnaires correlated moderately with each other. In conclusion, the Ethiopian adaptations of the Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist and the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory™ Family Impact Module are valid and reliable tools for use in parents of children with neurodevelopmental disorders including autism. These adapted measures may also be valuable for use in other low-income settings.

This study sought to devise a reliable and validated measurement scale to evaluate teachers' perceptions of school climate. The study sample consisted of 379 teachers working in Awi district public primary schools, Ethiopia. Measurement scale had five latent factors (school climate dimensions) and 26 indicators (items). The coefficient alpha values for internal consistency of items and the factor rho coefficients showed high reliability of the measurement scale. The Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was carried out to validate the measurement scale by determining the convergent and discriminant validity among five school climate dimensions. Average variance extracted (AVE) values showed adequate convergent validity of school climate dimensions. The discriminant validity across school climate dimensions was established using shared variance and heterotrait-monotrait ratio of correlations (HTMT) methods, which indicated that the five school climate dimensions are distinctively different from one another. Results revealed that the school climate is found to be a multidimensional concept with five-factor solution comprising 26 reliable and valid items that can be used to assess teachers' perceptions of school climate in different contexts. It is suggested that the future researcher can apply multi-group and multilevel confirmatory factor analysis to enhance the applicability of the measurement scale across countries.

In physics education, assessments address various forms of scientific knowledge. Most of the existing test instruments emphasise the assessment of content knowledge. These tests fail to measure the epistemic aspects of science. Thus, assessing epistemic knowledge is a theme that demands investigation. This study applies Rasch analysis to help validate an epistemic knowledge test in electricity and magnetism. Each of the initial 30 items represents distinct features of scientific reasoning. The construct dimensions are derived from Kind and Osborne's framework of Styles of Scientific Reasoning. Based on expert validation, a final 20 items were selected. The test was administered to 156 graduating in-service natural science teachers. Reliability and separation indices, person-item mapping, and principal component analysis using standardised residuals are reported. No meaningful secondary dimension was found in the test data. Invariant properties showed that the test had internal coherence. The Wright Map showed the difficulty of the test to the test takers. The overall fit statistics were within the acceptable range. Along the continuum of item difficulty, there were some notable gaps, where future test items judged to be that level of difficulty could be included. We acknowledge that there may be other reasons for these gaps.

This paper is positioned to make a sound contribution to knowledge of higher education (HE) quality through its study of student engagement in a large university in Ethiopia. We establish that the assessment of student engagement is a valid facet in determining HE quality, contributing holistically alongside quality assurance and university rankings. The authors present an example of this through reporting on a statistical analysis of an adjustment of the Australasian Survey of Student Engagement survey and its administration in the Ethiopian university. The results of factor analysis illustrate empirical support for the nine-factor engagement scale and a number of associated factors related to student demographics and university experience. The results of the multi-validation approach provide specific guidelines to universities using this approach to evaluate the validity and reliability of this construct. The paper provides a supporting tool that can be used by other universities to assist in the evaluation of students' engagement with their undergraduate programmes.

Background: People with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are at greater risk of potentially inappropriate prescribing (PIP) due to multiple comorbidities and polypharmacy. IMPACT2DM (Inappropriate Medication Prescribing Assessment Criteria for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus) is a tool designed to identify PIP for adults with T2DM. Objectives: To assess PIP for adults with T2DM in Ethiopia using the IMPACT2DM and to test the face validity and clinical validity of the tool. Methods: A cross-sectional study was undertaken using data extracted retrospectively from the medical records of adults being managed for T2DM at Debretabore Hospital. PIP was assessed using IMPACT2DM. Some items/item components of IMPACT2DM were modified to increase the tool's applicability for the outpatient setting, to clarify content or to use the terms most common in this particular setting. Multivariant logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify factors associated with PIP. Results: More than 90% of medical records had at least 1 PIP. Prescribing omission (80.9%) was the most commonly identified type of PIP. Adults with prescribing omissions are more likely to be ≥40 years old or to be prescribed with <5 medications. Adults with dosing problems were more likely ≥50 years old, or have had a fasting blood sugar (FBS) level out of the target range (80-130 mg/dL). Conclusions: IMPACT2DM is a clinically valid PIP identification tool for application in an Ethiopian outpatient setting. Health professionals should be alert to check for potential prescribing omissions for adults ≥40 years old and dosing problems for adults with an FBS level out of the target range or >50 years. This study was conducted to assess the psychometric properties of the Barkin Index of Maternal Functioning (BIMF) in an Ethiopian context. Data were obtained from 202 women with a child less than 1 year of age. Narrow standard deviations characterized responses to most BIMF items, but a handful of items had wider standard deviations associated with bimodality. Most interitem correlations were < |.15|, and 13 of the 20 BIMF items did not load satisfactorily on any factor in exploratory factor analyses. Two factors emerged from the remaining items, one with three items and the other with four. Although poor reliability results relating to internal (interitem) and temporal consistency could be attributed to limited variability in the data, a number of concerns are raised about the BIMF itself, including its content validity, instructions, response options, and usefulness in healthcare settings. Suggestions are made for improving the assessment of maternal functioning in Ethiopia and other contexts. More generally, this research demonstrates that researchers should not assume that the psychometric properties and appropriateness of scales will remain robust when those scales are used in contexts that differ from the contexts in which they were created. Background: Accessing healthcare services is a multifaceted phenomenon involving various elements, encompassing the demand, identification, reach, and utilization of healthcare needs. The literature offers methods for capturing patients' perceptions of healthcare access. However, to accurately measure patient perceptions, it is imperative to ensure the validity and reliability of such instruments by designing and implementing localized language versions. Aim: The primary aim of this study was to validate the Amharic version of the perceived access to health-care services among patients diagnosed with cervical cancer in Ethiopia. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted among cervical cancer patients at oncology centers in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. A consecutive sampling approach was used and data collection took place from January 1 to March 30, 2023. Following initial validation and pretesting, a KoboCollect mobile phone application was employed for data collection. Subsequently, the collected data underwent cleaning in Microsoft Excel and analysis through Amos software v.26 and R programming. Various validity and reliability tests, such as content validity, convergent validity, face validity, divergent validity, known-group validity, and reliability tests, were executed. A second-order confirmatory factor analysis was developed to calculate incremental model fit indices, including CFI and TLI, along with absolute measures, namely SRMR and RMSEA. Results: A total of 308 participants were involved in the study, with 202 (65.6%) being patients referred from outside Addis Ababa. The initial evaluation of content validity by expert panels indicated that all criteria were met, with a CVR range of 0.5 to 1, I-CVI values ranging from 0.75 to 1, an S-CVI value of 0.91, and face validity values ranging from 2.4 to 4.8. The internal consistency of items within the final constructs varied from 0.76 to 0.93. Convergent, known-group, and most divergent validity tests fell within acceptable fit ranges. Common incremental fit measures for CFI and TLI were achieved with corresponding values of 0.95 and 0.94, respectively. The absolute fit measures of SRMR and RMSEA were 0.04 and 0.07, indicating good and moderate fit, respectively. Conclusion: The study indicated a high internal consistency and validity of items with good fit to the data, suggesting potential accuracy of the domains. A five-domain structure was developed which enables adequate assessment of perceived access to health-care services of patients with cervical cancer in Ethiopia. Purpose: This study explored differences in self-reported responses and the psychometric performance of the composite EQ-5D-5L anxiety/depression (A/D) dimension compared with a split version of the dimension where 'anxiety' and 'depression' are measured separately. Methods: People with anxiety and/or depression who visited the Amanuel Mental Specialized Hospital in Ethiopia completed the standard EQ-5D-5L with the added subdimensions. Correlation analysis was used to examine convergent validity with validated measures of depression (PHQ-9) and anxiety (GAD-7), while ANOVA was used to assess known-groups' validity. Agreement between ratings for composite and split dimensions was compared using percent agreement and Cohen's Kappa, while the proportion of 'no problems' reports was compared using the chi-square test. Discriminatory power analysis was undertaken using the Shannon index (H') and Shannon Evenness index (J'). Open-ended questions explored participants' preferences. Results: Of the 462 respondents, 30.5% reported no problems with the composite A/D, while 13.2% reported no problems on both subdimensions. Agreement between ratings for composite and split dimensions was highest for respondents with comorbid anxiety and depression. The depression subdimension had higher correlation with PHQ-9 (r = 0.53) and GAD-7 (r = 0.33) than the composite A/D dimension (r = 0.36 and r = 0.28, respectively). The split subdimensions and composite A/D could adequately differentiate respondents based on their severity of anxiety or depression. Slightly better informativity was observed in EQ-4D-5L + anxiety (H' = 5.4; J' = 0.47) and EQ-4D-5L + depression (H' = 5.31; J' = 0.46) than EQ-5D-5L (H' = 5.19; J' = 0.45). Conclusions: Adopting two subdimensions within the EQ-5D-5L tool appears to perform slightly better than the standard EQ-5D-5L. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background. The Mini Nutrition Assessment (MNA) is a widely used and valid tool for screening and assessment of malnutrition among the elderly population worldwide. However, MNA has not been validated among the Ethiopian elderly population and this study assessed the validity of the tool for the target population. Methods. Cross-sectional validation study design employed to validate MNA in Meki town, East Ethiopia. This study included 176 randomly selected elders living in the community, whereas amputated, bedridden, visible deformity, known liver and/or renal disorders were excluded. The original MNA questionnaires were translated to local language and administered to each participant after doing the pretest. The anthropometric, self-perception of nutritional status and serum albumin concentrations were measured. Reliability, validity, sensitivity, specificity, Positive Predictive Value (PPV), and Negative Predictive Value (NPV) were calculated. Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was plotted to identify the area under the curve (AUC) and optimal cut-off value for the prediction of malnutrition. Result. A total of one hundred and seventy-six elders participated in this study. Of the total participants, 78(44.3%) were males. The mean (SD) age of the participants was 67.6 (±5.8) years and ranged from 60 to 84 years. The prevalence of malnutrition based on the MNA criteria (MNA < 17 points) was 18.2%, and 13.1% based on serum albumin concentration (<3 g/dl). The MNA had an overall Internal consistency of Cronbach's alpha 0.61. The tool also demonstrated significant criterion-related validity (0.75, p<0:001) and concurrent validity (0.51, p<0:001) with serum albumin concentration and self-perception of nutritional status respectively. Using the original cut-off point, the sensitivity, specificity, PPV and NPV of the tool were 93.5%, 44.6%, 65.4% and 86.0%, respectively. By modifying, the cut-off point to a value of <20.5, the sensitivity and specificity of the tool increases to 97.6% and 82.8% respectively. The AUC (95%CI) showed an overall accuracy of 92.7% (88.5, 96.9). Conclusion. Background: The difference in nursing care quality by institution has implications for both the organization and its clients. Though disparities in patient satisfaction, which is an interpersonal patient outcome with nursing care, have been reported between public and private hospitals, there has been little research on the study area. Objective: To compare the level of patients' satisfaction towards nursing care services among adult inpatients at Jimma Medical Center, and Oda Hulle hospital Jimma, southwest Ethiopia 2021. Methods: A comparative cross-sectional study design was used among 431 patients of Jimma medical center and Oda Hulle hospital from May 3 to July 3, 2021, using a systematic random sampling technique. The Newcastle scale of satisfaction was used to collect data, which was then entered into Epidata 4.6 and exported to SPSS version 26 for analysis. We used descriptive and logistic regression analysis. Results: Patient satisfaction at public and private hospitals was reported 54.2% (95% CI: 52.9– 59.3) and 57.1% (95% CI: 55.2– 61.7), respectively. In public hospital, the patient satisfaction was affected by being in the age group of 41– 50 years (P = 0.006, AOR = 3), duration of stay in the ward (P = 0.002, AOR = 0.42,), cleanliness of the ward (P = 0.018, AOR = 1.8,), and admission history (P = 0.049, AOR = 0.60,). In private hospital (Oda Hulle), the patient satisfaction was affected by history of admission (P = 0.035, OR = 0.456), ward space (p = 0.007, AOR = 2.8), the perceived capacity of nurses (P = 0.002, AOR = 5.8) to pharmacy services (P = 0.032, AOR = 2.3,). Conclusion: Relatively the patient satisfaction towards nursing care in public hospital was lower compared to the private hospital, though no statistical difference (p = 0.225) observed. Illness history, cleanliness of the ward, Nurses make adequate visits and get their support when needed, Adequacy of ward space, the perceived capacity of nurses, and Access to pharmacy services were positively associated with patient satisfaction. Background: Assessment of cognitive competence is a major element of the internship qualification exam in undergraduate medical education in Ethiopia. Assessing the quality of exam items can help to improve the validity of assessments and assure stakeholders about the accuracy of the go/no decision to the internship. However, we know little about the quality of exam items utilized to ascertain fitness to join the medical internship. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the quality of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) of the qualification exam administered to final-year medical students at Debre Tabor University (DTU), Ethiopia. Methods: A psychometric study was conducted to assess the qualities of 120 randomly selected MCQs and 407 distractors. Item characteristics were estimated using the item response theory (IRT) model. T-test, one-way ANOVA, and chi-square tests were run to analyze the univariate association between factors. Pearson's correlation test was done to determine the predictive validity of the qualification examination. Result: Overall, 16, 51, and 33% of the items had high, moderate, and low distractor efficiency, respectively. About two-thirds (65.8%) of the items had two or more functioning distractors and 42.5% exhibited a desirable difficulty index. However, 77.8% of items administered in the qualification examination had a negative or poor discrimination index. Four and five option items didn't show significant differences in psychometric qualities. The qualification exam showed a positive predictive value of success in the national licensing examination (Pearson's correlation coefficient = 0.5). Conclusions: The psychometric properties of the medical qualification exam were inadequate for making valid decisions. Five option MCQs were not better than four options in terms of psychometric qualities. The qualification examination had a positive predictive validity of future performance. In areas where children have multiple environmental exposures to enteric pathogens, identifying the sources of exposure by measuring external and internal exposures to enteric pathogens and complementing by questionnaire and observational checklist to capture behaviors resulting risk of exposure is critical. Accordingly, this study was conducted to design valid and reliable questionnaire to assess behaviors and environmental conditions resulting exposure to enteric pathogens in the rural northwest Ethiopia. We began with a thorough exploration of relevant literature to understand the theoretical framework on the research objectives to identify variables to highlight what the questionnaire is measuring. We then generated items in each domain that can effectively address the study objectives and we refined and organized the items in a suitable format. Then after, we conducted face and content validity by involving experts on the research subject. After pre-testing a pre-final version of the instrument generated in the content validity study, we conducted a pilot study in 150 randomly selected rural households to test the internal consistency reliability. We used content validity ratio (CVR), item-level content validity index (I-CVIs), scale-level content validity index (S-CVI/UA), and modified kappa statistics to measure content validity of items. Moreover, we used agreement and consistency indices (i.e., Cronbach's alpha) to assess the internal consistency of items. The content validity test result showed that the value of CVR was 0.95, I-CVIs was 0.97, and modified kappa was 0.97 for the whole items, indicating all the items are appropriate. The scale-level content validity index (S-CVI/UA) was 0.95 for the whole items indicating the agreement among judges to each items is higher. The internal consistency reliability test result indicated that Cronbach's alpha for the pre-final version of the pre-final tool was 0.85, indicating the strong reliability of the tool. The final version of the questionnaire was, therefore, prepared with 8 dimensions and 80 items. In this study, we designed valid and reliable questionnaire to assess behaviors and environmental conditions that result high risk of exposure to enteric infections in rural settings. The questionnaire can be used as a tool in the rural settings of developing countries with some amendments to account local contexts. Background: Positive deviance approach (PDA) was implemented as an intervention strategy to address the poor practice of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) in Jimma town, Ethiopia. Understanding the end-users satisfaction and its drivers is essential to determine whether this approach will be viable in the long run. Therefore, we determined the level of users' satisfaction with the intervention and identified multi-level predictors to explain variability. Methods: The data for this follow-up study were collected from September 01 to 25, 2020 among the study participants who were living in the intervention clusters of an earlier trial. A sample of 260 participants were invited to respond to an interviewer-administered structured questionnaire that assessed both individual and community-level variables. The developed tool was refined using experts' view (face validity) and using factor analysis (FA) to validate the satisfaction measurement scales (construct validity). The mean scores were standardized using Percentages Scale Mean Score (PSMS) formulae. Two-level mixed-effects linear regression (linear mixed models) were performed to fit individual, community, and mixed-level variables. All assumptions were checked for each analysis as appropriate and β-estimates at 95% CI and p-value of < 0.05 were considered to declare a level of significance. Results: The overall level of end-users' satisfaction (PSMS) with PDA as an intervention to improve EBF was 50.9% with a maximum score of 99% and a minimum of 8%. Of the emerged satisfaction measuring scales, the standardized mean score for the user empowerment scale was the highest (53.7%). Five scales were emerged with 84.2% of the total variability explained in users' satisfaction. The mixed-effect model revealed that age, occupation, experience of breastfeeding (BF), knowledge, attitude, self-efficacy, main source of BF information, previous home visit/support received from HEPs, participation in any social activities, and perceived community support for BF were independent two-level predictors of satisfaction. Conclusion: As an intermediate outcome, more than half of the end-users of the PDA intervention were satisfied. End-users' satisfaction with PDA as an intervention to promote EBF was predicted by multi-level factors. This article purports to analyze the content validity of model examinations for grade 10 mathematics. The study looked at the model tests to evaluate if they were indicative of the course content and emphasized on the syllabus' learning outcomes. A survey design with six years of mathematics model exam, syllabi, and textbooks served as the key data sources was considered in the study. Kendall's coefficient of concordance and chi-square test of statistical treatment were used to analyze the quantitative data obtained. In addition, the qualitative data were evaluated using narration and description. The study's statistical findings revealed that there was no relationship between test items and learning outcomes in cognitive domain categories or main textbook content. As a result, the exam items did not correspond to the syllabus's objectives and content. Furthermore, the qualitative data revealed that the test items were unclear, poorly laid out, and multidimensional, as well as having low content validity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

(1) Background: Self-reported measures play a crucial role in research, clinical practice, and health assessment. Instruments used to assess life satisfaction need validation to ensure that they measure what they are intended to detect true variations over time. An adapted instrument measuring life satisfaction for use among Ethiopian elders was lacking; therefore, this study aimed to culturally adapt and evaluate the psychometric properties of the Life Satisfaction Index for the Third Age--Short Form (LSITA-SF12) in Ethiopia. (2) Methods: Elderly people (n = 130) in Metropolitan cities of northwestern Ethiopia answered the LSITA-SF12 in the Amharic language. Selected reliability and validity tests were examined. (3) Result: The scale had an acceptable limit of content validity index, internal consistency, test-retest, inter-rater reliabilities, and concurrent and discriminant validities. (4) Conclusion: The Amharic language version of LSITA-SF12 appeared to be valid and reliable measures and can be recommended for use in research and clinical purposes among Amharic-speaking Ethiopian elders. Introduction and objectives: Low back pain (LBP) is a highly prevalent and disabling public health problem globally. However, little is known about factors affecting health care utilisation for optimal management of the pain, and there is no validated instrument to derive epidemiological data for a better understanding of these factors. The aim of this study was to develop and validate an instrument used to measure determinants of health care utilisation for LBP in Ethiopia. Methods: The relevant domains of potential determinants of health care utilisation for LBP were identified following a comprehensive review of the literature. Items relating to each domain were then generated by considering the context of Ethiopia, and where necessary, existing items were adapted. The instrument was then translated, and an expert panel reviewed the instrument for content validity, clarity and any other suggestions. Using the data collected from 1303 adults with LBP, factorial validity was assessed by conducting principal component and parallel analyses. Internal consistency reliability was also assessed using Cronbach's alpha. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Cohen Kappa statistic were calculated to evaluate temporal stability of the instrument. Results: Parallel analysis showed that there were six components with Eigenvalues (obtained from principal component analysis) exceeding the corresponding criterion values for a randomly generated data matrix of the same size. Cronbach's alpha for the internal consistency reliability ranged from 0.65 to 0.82. In assessing temporal stability, ICC ranged from 0.60, 95% CI: 0.23–0.98 to 0.95, 95% CI: 0.81–1.00 while Cohen Kappa ranged from 0.72, 95% CI: 0.49–0.94 to 0.93, 95% CI: 0.85–1.00. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that the newly developed instrument has an overall good level of content and factorial validity, internal consistency reliability, and temporal stability. Purpose: Total quality management (TQM) has long been viewed as a strategy to attain business excellence. However, it is relatively a new concept in the context of emerging economies. Particularly, this is far beyond the reality in the context of African countries, in general. The purpose of this paper is to study the current state of TQM implementation in the manufacturing industry of Ethiopia (MIE). The study also focuses on several comparisons, between large and medium companies, and ISO and non-ISO companies with regard to the adoption of TQM practices. Design/methodology/approach: The study draws on top- and middle-level managers from sample companies. Data were collected using a structured survey questionnaire. After testing scale reliability and validity, descriptive and factor analysis were used for the data analysis. Findings: The findings, in general, indicated that Ethiopian manufacturers have implemented TQM at a moderate level (grand mean value of 2.86 on 0–5 scale). It is revealed that ISO companies are significantly adopted TQM practices than non-ISO companies, whereas no difference was found between large and medium companies. Originality/value: Given the importance of understanding TQM and paucity of research on the topic in Ethiopia, the study provides practical insights and groundwork that can guide practitioners to understand the drivers of TQM in the region. Particularly, the study is useful to plan corrective actions on practices that are likely to obstruct TQM implementation in the MIE. Moreover, the study adds to the empirical literature that may yield important insights on TQM for under-researched emerging economies, particularly for the eastern part of Africa, where nations share similar cross-cultural norms, economic, social and ethnic settings. Background: The incidence of Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) in the developing world is not known. A nonclinical screening tool for prolapse is needed in the resource poor setting. In this study, we aim to determine the validity of the Pelvic Organ Prolapse Simple Screening Inventory (POPSSI) for detection of POP in a population of women at two academic hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.Methods: Women from two teaching hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia were recruited to complete the POPSSI questionnaire as well as a Pelvic Organ Prolapse Quantification (POP-Q) exam. Descriptive data on exam findings were collected. Questionnaire responses were then correlated to exam findings and data analyzed to determine the validity of this test as a screening tool for prolapse in our patient population.Results: Majority of the women with POP had advanced stage. The sensitivity and specificity of the POPSSI for identifying pelvic organ prolapse in our study patient population was 91.7 and 60.6% respectively.Conclusion: The POPSSI has a high sensitivity for detecting women with POP. Background: There is a scarcity of adapted measures to study resilience and mental health of people in humanitarian settings in Africa. The aim of this study was to identify the factor structure and other psychometric properties of the Sense of Coherence (SoC-13) scale in Eritrean refugees living in Ethiopia. Methods: In a cross-sectional survey, 562 adults were selected randomly from Eritrean refugees living in Mai Aini camp, Ethiopia. The SoC-13, the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale (CES-D), the Pre and Post-Migration Living Difficulties checklist, the Primary Care Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder screener (PC-PTSD), the Oslo Social Support Scale (OSS-3), the Coping Style scale and the Fast Alcohol Screening Test (FAST) were administered concurrently. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was used to investigate the factor structure of the SoC-13 using IBM SPSS Amos, version 21. Result: A one factor model of the SoC with twelve items had the best fit to the current data (CFA = 0.982, RMSEA = 0.035 [90%CI = 0.018, 0.050]), with good internal consistency (Cronbach's Alpha = 0.75). When all 13 items of the Tigrigna version were considered, there was an inverse association of SoC-13 with PC-PTSD(r = − 0.433, p < 0.001), CES-D (r = − 0.597, p < 0.001), Pre and post-migration living difficulties checklist (r = − 0.265, p <.001and r = − 0.249, p < 0.001 respectively), and FAST (r = − 0.105, p < 0.001), providing support for the divergent validity of the scale. The SoC-13 was associated positively with the Oslo Social Support scale (OSS-3)(r = 0.363 p < 0.001) and task-oriented coping (r = 0.089, p < 0.001), demonstrating convergent validity. The four items, specifically item-1, item-2, item-3 and item-12 have shown relatively weaker item loadings (β<0.40); but item-2 demonstrated non-significant loading (β = 0.06, p>0.05) in a one factor model of SoC-13. Conclusions: Although the 13-items of the Tigrigna version of the SoC scale loaded significantly onto their respective factors in the three factor model, only 12 items loaded significantly onto the one factor model, which demonstrated superior fit to the current data. Keeping in mind that future research should examine the conceptualizations of the four items demonstrating poor convergent validity in this Eritrean sample, the reduced Tigrigna version of SoC-12 is a reasonable measure of sense of coherence in this community.
