Background: This study aimed to assess the predictive value of endometrial blood flow branches on pregnancy outcomes after hormone replacement therapy-frozen embryo transfer (HRT-FET). Methods: This prospective observational study involved 292 reproductive-aged women who underwent endometrial receptivity assessment in a tertiary care academic medical center in southwest China using power Doppler ultrasonography during HRT-FET. Three-dimensional power Doppler ultrasound was performed on the day of endometrial transformation and the day before embryo transfer. The endometrial blood flow branches of the endometrial and subendometrial regions were compared in the non-pregnant and pregnant groups at the two time points mentioned above. Results: The endometrial blood flow branches were higher in pregnant patients than in non-pregnant patients on the day of endometrial transformation (P = 0.009) and the day before embryo transfer (P = 0.001). Changes in endometrial blood flow pattern and endometrial blood flow branches at the two time points did not differ among the pregnancy outcome samples. After adjusting for age, antral follicles, and embryos transferred, the endometrial blood flow branches on the day before embryo transfer was the independent factor influencing the chance of clinical pregnancy, with an odds ratio of 3.001 (95% confidence interval: 1.448 − 6.219, P = 0.003). Conclusions: Endometrial blood flow perfusion during the peri-transplantation period of the HRT-FET cycle is a good indicator of pregnancy outcomes, suggesting that valuation of endometrial branches via power Doppler ultrasound is a simple and effective approach for achieving indicator measurements. Purpose: To investigate the safety and efficacy of salvianolate injection in preventing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) following total hip replacement. Methods: A total of 114 patients who underwent total hip replacement at Department of Trauma, Fengfeng General Hospital of North China Medical and Health Group, Handan City, China from March 2019 to March 2022 were enrolled. Patients were randomly divided into study group (n = 57) and control group (n = 57). The control group received conventional treatment (low molecular weight heparin) while the study group was administered salvianolate injection combined with conventional treatment. Incidence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) at 7 and 14 days after surgery, platelet function indices, including platelet count, glycoprotein IIb/IIIa (GP IIb/IIIa), and CD62P, coagulation function indices (prothrombin time (PT), fibrinogen (FIB) and D-dimer), and hemodynamics indices, viz, peak blood flow velocity (Vp) and average velocity (Va) were investigated and compared. Results: Incidence of DVT was 1.75 % (1/57) at 7 days and 5.26 % (3/57) at 14 days in the study group, and 5.26 % (3/57) at 7 days and 17.54 % (10/57) at 14 days in control group. Incidence of DVT in the study group was significantly reduced compared to control group 14 days after surgery (p < 0.05). Also, the study group had significantly lower visual analog scale (VAS) scores at 7 days and 1 month after surgery compared to control group (p < 0.05). Platelet count, GPIIb/IIIa, and CD62P in the study group were significantly lower than in control group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Salvianolate injection significantly prevents DVT after total hip replacement, improves hemodynamics, and coagulation function, and thus contributes to recovery of hip function. This research aimed to determine the effects of near work on macular choroidal blood flow and thickness in young adults. A total of 109 participants (19–28 years old) were recruited from Capital Medical University in China. The participants spent 40 min reading a book text at a distance of 33 cm. Swept-source optical coherence tomography/optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCT/OCTA) was performed to measure the changes in choriocapillaris perfusion area (CCPA) and choroidal thickness (ChT) after 40 min of near work. The SS-OCT/OCTA data covered an area of 6 mm × 6 mm, which centered on the fovea. The baseline ChT and CCPA before near work were negatively correlated with AL, while positively correlated with the magnitude of spherical equivalent (p <.001). Total CCPA decreased significantly by 6 mm × 6 mm macular area after near work compared to that before near work (24.26 ± 1.96 vs. 24.63 ± 1.61 mm2, p<.001). The macular ChT was lower after 40 min of reading than that before 40 min of reading, but no significant difference was observed (302.25 ± 77.69 vs. 304.92 ± 79.73 μm, p =.078). The extent of choroidal thinning was significantly positively correlated with the magnitude of CCPA reduction (p <.001). The decline in CCPA after near work was significantly positively correlated with axial length (AL; p <.001). This study demonstrated that near work significantly decreased CCPA. Objective: General anesthesia (GA) can decrease cerebral flow velocities and predispose patients to cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome (CHS) and other perioperative adverse events after carotid endarterectomy (CEA). The aim of this study was to investigate whether decreased pre-operative flow velocity is associated with an increased risk of CHS and perioperative cerebral infarct, and to further identify risk factors if there is any. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 920 consecutive patients who received CEA from 2010 to 2020 at a major academic hospital in China. Middle cerebral artery (MCA) blood flow velocities were measured before and after induction of the GA by transcranial Doppler (TCD). Patients were classified into two groups: the NORMAL group if flow velocity decreased < 30% and the LOW group if flow velocity decreased ≥30%. The ultrasonographic diagnostic criterion of CHS was defined as the 100% increase in flow velocity by TCD from the baseline to post-CEA. The occurrence of CHS, perioperative cerebral infarction was compared between the two groups. Results: 399 (43.4%) were classified as LOW measurement, and 521 (56.6%) patients were classified as NORMAL measurement. In the LOW group, there were more patients with diabetes, fewer patients with ipsilateral ICA severe stenosis and the opening of anterior/posterior communicating artery. Although the occurrence of CHS per ultrasonography criteria was higher in the LOW group (21.3% vs 15.7%, P = 0.03), the occurrence of CHS per clinical criteria (3.2%, vs 2.1%, P = 0.28) or the perioperative cerebral infarct between the two groups (5.8% vs 5.0%, P = 0.60) is equivalent. Conclusion: Patients with decreased flow velocities post-GA were more likely to meet the ultrasonography criteria for CHS, but they are not at risk of developing clinical CHS or perioperative cerebral infarct. Maintenance hemodialysis is the main method for the treatment of end-stage renal disease in China. The K t / V value is the gold standard of hemodialysis adequacy. However, K t / V requires repeated blood drawing and evaluation; it is hard to monitor dialysis adequacy frequently. In order to meet the need for repeated clinical assessments of dialysis adequacy, we want to find a noninvasive way to assess dialysis adequacy. Therefore, we collect some clinically relevant data and develop a machine learning- (ML-) based model to predict dialysis adequacy for clinical hemodialysis patients. We collect 250 patients, including gender, age, ultrafiltration (UF), predialysis body weight (preBW), postdialysis body weights (postBW), blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), and blood flow (BF). An efficient graph-based Takagi-Sugeno-Kang Fuzzy System (G-TSK-FS) model is proposed to predict the dialysis adequacy of hemodialysis patients. The root mean square error (RMSE) of our model is 0.1578. The proposed model can be used as a feasible method to predict dialysis adequacy, providing a new way for clinical practice. This review provides a comprehensive update on emerging ROCK inhibitors as an innovative treatment option for lowering intraocular pressure (IOP) in glaucoma and aims to describe the structure, mechanism of action, pharmaceutical characteristics, desirable ocular effects, including side effects for each agent. A literature review was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, clinicaltrials.gov, ARVO journals, Cochrane library and Selleckchem. Databases were searched using "investigational Rho kinase inhibitors," and "glaucoma" as keywords. In addition to this building block strategy, successive fractions were employed to further refine the results. Of the several ROCK inhibitors discovered, only two drugs are currently approved for glaucoma treatment; Netarsudil in the USA and Ripasudil in Japan and China. We identified and reviewed 15 agents currently in laboratory or clinical trials. These agents lower IOP mainly by decreasing outflow resistance through pharmacologic relaxation of the trabecular meshwork (TM) cells and reducing episcleral venous pressure. They have an optimistic safety profile; however, conjunctival hyperemia, conjunctival hemorrhage, pain on instillation, and corneal verticillata are common. Other properties such as neuroprotection (enhancing optic nerve blood flow and promoting axonal regeneration), anti-fibrotic activity, and endothelial cell proliferation may improve the visual prognosis and surgical outcomes in glaucoma. BACKGROUND: Plenty of evidences have revealed that electrical stimulation (ES) can promote local tissue vascular regeneration and regulate the expression of vasoactive substances, but it is unclear whether ES may promote local revascularization and change blood flow state in myofascial trigger points (MTrPs) or not. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of ES on microvascular regeneration and plasma endothelin-1 and nitric oxide levels in MTrPs. METHODS: Fifty-four Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into blank control, model and ES groups, with 18 rats in each group. And each group was equally subdivided into three subgroups (before, 7 and 15 days after intervention). In the model and ES groups, the rat model of MTrPs was established using combat and eccentric motion. Once the MTrPs model was made, the ES group was given ES intervention (depth: 2 mm, voltage: 6 V, frequency: 20 Hz, pulse width: 160 ms) at MTrPs, 30 minutes per day, for 15 days. Six rats from each group were executed at 7 and 15 days of intervention. Paraffin sections were manufactured for hematoxylin-eosin and immunohistochemical staining after the local tissues of MTrPs were dissected and separated. Subsequently, pathological changes were observed under light microscope. Microvessel density was counted and analyzed. The levels of plasma endothelin-1 and nitric oxide were detected by ELISA. The study protocol was approved by the Experimental Animal Ethics Committee of the Nanfang Hospital of Southern Medical University in China. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The changes of brittleness and insect-likes erosion in local MTrps tissues were observed under the light microscope in the model and ES groups. The micro-vessel density in MTrps increased and the tissue structure of MTrps gradually returned to be normal after ES intervention. The microvessel density in the model and ES groups was lower than that in the blank control group before intervention, but the microvessel density in the ES group was significantly higher than that in the other two groups at 7 and 15 days of intervention (both P < 0.01). In the ES group, the microvessel density was significantly increased with time after intervention. There was no statistically significant difference between the blank control and model group (P > 0.05). The levels of plasma endothelin-1 and nitric oxide were higher in the model and ES groups than the blank control group before intervention. After 15 days of intervention, the levels of plasma endothelin-1 in the ES group were decreased (P < 0.01, vs. 0 and 7 days), while the level of nitric oxide was slightly increased at 7 and 15 days of intervention (P < 0.01, vs. the former time point). There was no statistically significant difference between the blank control and model groups (P > 0.05). These results reveal that ES intervention can promote the regeneration of microvessels and regulate the expression of vasoactive substances in MTrPs tissue, improve ischemia and hypoxia state of MTrPs and contribute greatly to local tissue repair. Background: With the ageing of China's population, the incidence and mortality of coronary atherosclerotic heart disease (CAD) is increasing year by year, which brings a heavy burden to the family and society [1]. We aimed to analyse the strategy of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in the right coronary artery and to compare the haemodynamic characteristics of the sequential grafts with those of single grafts and to observe the patency rate of those grafts for 1 week after the operation.Methods: A total of 242 patients (178 men, mean age 62.6 ± 8.8 years) underwent right coronary artery bypass grafting in our hospital from October 2016 to January 2019. The blood flow (Q, ml/min), pulsatility index (PI) and related parameters of the grafts were measured and recorded by TTFM during the CABG. The patency of the grafts was evaluated by coronary computed tomography (CT) for 1 week after the operation.Results: The most common material used for the graft in the right coronary system of CABG is the greater saphenous vein (92.3%), followed by the radial artery (5.5%) and the internal mammary artery (1.9%). The highest frequency target of the right coronary artery is the posterior descending artery (PDA) (47.6%), followed by the right main coronary artery (RCA) (29.1%) and the posterior branch of the left ventricle (PL) (23.3%). The proportion of single grafts was the highest for the right coronary artery in CABG (178 cases, 67.9%), followed by a graft of the PDA-PL (42 cases, 16.0%) and other sequential grafts among the different coronary artery systems (including the system of the left anterior descending artery (LAD) and the left circumflex (LCX)). Whether there were sequential grafts of the PDA-PL or other sequential grafts among the different systems of the coronary artery, the instantaneous flow of a group of sequential grafts was higher than that of a single graft, and the difference had statistical significance (P < 0.01). However, there were no significant differences in the flow between the groups of sequential grafts (P = 0.410). Diastolic flow (DF) in the group of sequential grafts of the right coronary system was better than that in the non-sequential group (P < 0.001), and the difference had statistical significance. There was no significant difference between the DF of the groups of the other system of sequential grafts and that of the right coronary sequential grafts. Coronary artery CT suggested that there were 11 cases of poorly developing grafts or stenosis and occlusion a week after the operation, and those phenomenon mainly occurred in the group with a single graft. There was only one case that was occluded in the group of other systems of sequential grafts, and statistically significant differences existed between the two groups (P < 0.01).Conclusions: In our centre, the most common form of CABG in the right coronary artery system is a non-sequential vein bridge to the PDA. Whether there are sequential grafts of the PDA-PL or other sequential grafts among the different coronary artery systems, the instantaneous flow of a group of sequential grafts is higher than that of a single graft. Background: To report a case of branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO) secondary to high-altitude exposure and diabetic retinopathy (DR), and to characterize the retinal changes before and after hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) treatment.Case Presentation: We present a case of a 42-year-old man with DR who travelled to Tibet (in China, 3800 m/12467 ft. above mean sea level). The day after the end of his journey, the patient presented with acute, painless visual loss and visual field loss in his left eye. He was then diagnosed with BRAO, which is an acute blockage of blood flow. After HBO treatment, visual acuity and visual field were improved.Conclusions: High-altitude exposure and DR may be considered as relevant risk factors for BRAO. The ophthalmologist should be aware that the BRAO might be a rare presenting sign of high-altitude retinopathy (HAR), particularly in patients with DR. Objective: Yangxue Qingnao granules (YXQNG), which translates to granules that tonify the blood and clear liver heat, are widely available in China for the treatment of Chronic Cerebral Circulation Insufficiency (CCCI). This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of YXQNG in treating CCCI. Methods: PubMed, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Embase, the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, and the Wanfang Database were searched from their inception to February 2019. Randomized controlled trials of YXQNG used alone or in combination with other drugs against a placebo, with no intervention or used with other drugs in CCCI patients were identified. The reviewers identified studies, extracted data, and assessed the quality of the evidence, independently and in duplicate. The Cochrane risk of bias assessment tool was used for quality assessment. Results: A total of 31 RCTs and 2,877 patients were selected. The meta‐analysis indicated that the ratio between the combined RR of the total effective rate and the 95% confidential interval (95% CI) was 1.21 (1.17, 1.26). The combined MD of transcranial Doppler (TCD) detecting carotid artery, vertebral artery, and basilar artery blood flows (95% CI), respectively, were 8.84 (5.83, 11.85), 4.72 (3.71, 5.73), and 3.89 (3.03, 4.76). The combined MD of plasma viscosity and fibrinogen, respectively, were −0.35 (−0.40, −0.30) and −0.81 (−1.12, −0.50). Serious adverse effects were not reported in all the included trials. Conclusion: This systematic review revealed that YXQNG could increase cerebral blood flow in patients with CCCI and improve their symptoms, with no serious adverse effects. Since the literature reviewed was affected by factors such as lower quality of the included studies, the systematic evaluation's conclusion is not very reliable. Background: Recent innovations in biomaterials technology have led to the development of innovative sorbents adopted as adsorbing devices in the field of extracorporeal blood purification therapies. As removal mechanism, adsorption allows to remove specific molecules, selectively binding them to sorbent materials. In addition to the material properties, a quintessential aspect influencing device properties is blood flow distribution within the sorbent particles. Objectives: In order to adequately characterize the potential adsorbing properties for an effective blood purification therapy, an in vitro study assessing the fluid dynamics inside 3 new cartridges, HA130, HA230 and HA330 (Jafron, Zhuhai City, -China) was conducted through CT imaging technique. -Methods: The cartridges were placed in vertical position in the CT -gantry. Dye solution was circulated through the cartridges at 250 mL/min, longitudinal sections, 0.5 cm thick, were recorded for 60 s. Furthermore, an in vitro test was conducted to build pressure drop profiles. Blood was circulated at a different flow rate, 100–400 mL/min, step 50 mL/min. Pre and post cartridges pressures were acquired and pressure drop calculated. Results: Sequential images demonstrated an excellent distribution of the flow inside the cartridges. Average flow velocity was 0.37 cm/s for the 3 cartridges. HA130 had a homogeneous flow profile along the entire length of the device; HA230 and HA330 showed minimal differences between central and peripheral regions. Pressure drop profiles resulted linear, increasing proportionally with blood flow rate and packing density. Conclusions: We may conclude that the structural and functional design of the studied cartridges is adequate for haemoperfusion with no channelling phenomena. Objectives: Although previous studies have demonstrated the relationship between ABO blood groups and cardiovascular disease, the association of ABO blood type with spontaneous recanalization (SR) in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) has not been previously investigated.Methods: We performed an initial exploratory study on the association of ABO blood groups with the presence of SR in 1209 patients with AMI. They were divided into two groups according to the thrombolysis in myocardial infarction (TIMI) grades: no-SR group (TIMI 0-1, n = 442) and SR group (TIMI 2-3, n = 767). To confirm our primary findings, data from a second AMI population (n = 200) was analyzed.Results: In the initial data, SR group had a significantly higher percentage of blood type O and a lower percentage of blood type A compared to the no-SR group. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that blood type O was positively associated with SR (odds ratio: 1.40, 95% confidence interval: 1.05-1.87, p = .02), and this finding was confirmed in our second population.Conclusion: The present study demonstrates that blood type O was independently and positively associated with an open culprit artery in patients with AMI, suggesting that the ABO blood type is not only associated with the susceptibility to coronary artery disease but also to spontaneous reperfusion in AMI patients. Aim: To explore the optimal vascular diameter and blood flow measured by ultrasound to predict fistula maturity in Chinese patients.Materials and Methods: One hundred and thirty-two patients were enrolled in the study. The blood flow and the diameters of the brachial artery, radial artery, and cephalic vein were analysed according to clinical outcomes. The performances of blood flow, cephalic vein diameter, and the two factors combined in predicting fistula maturity were evaluated and the optimal cut-off values for Chinese patients were determined.Results: During a 6 month follow-up, 113 fistulas were classified as mature and 19 fistulas were classified as failure. In both groups, the diameters of the brachial and radial arteries increased gradually within 2 weeks post-surgery (p<0.05), and cephalic vein diameter and blood flow increased within 4 weeks post-surgery (p<0.05). The blood flow of the failure group was significantly lower than that of the mature group from the first day after creation. The area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was 0.95 (529 ml/min, the optimal cut-off value) for blood flow, 0.83 (5.2 mm) for cephalic vein diameter, and 0.96 for the two factors combined in predicting fistula maturity.Conclusions: For Chinese patients, blood flow >529 ml/min could be used to predict fistula maturity and cephalic vein diameter >5.2 mm could be a supplement when necessary. Objectives The causal role of some cardiovascular risk factors, such as HDL cholesterol, has been increasingly challenged and attention is returning to all elements of Virchow's triad, i.e., hypercoagulability (including viscosity) as well as endothelial function and blood flow. We examined the life course origins of coagulability. Methods We used multivariable linear regression to assess whether childhood influences, proxied by height and its components, were associated with hematocrit (Hct), hemoglobin (HGB), and other hematological parameters in 28,595 older Chinese adults (mean age = 61.8 years) from the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study. Results Adjusted for age, sex, and recruitment phase, leg length was negatively associated with platelets (PLT) (−0.83 × 109/l per centimeter (cm), 95% confidence interval (CI) −1.01 to −0.65). Sitting height and height were positively associated with Hct (0.05% per cm, 95% CI 0.04-0.07 for sitting height; 0.02% per cm, 95% CI 0.01-0.02 for height), HGB (0.21 g/l per cm, 95% CI 0.17-0.25; 0.07 g/l per cm, 95% CI 0.04-0.09) and negatively associated with PLT (−1.2 × 109/l per cm, 95% CI −1.4 to −1.0; −0.83 × 109/l per cm, 95% CI −0.95 to −0.70). Further adjustment for potential confounders did little to change the estimates. Conclusions For the first time we provide anthropometric evidence for the different roles of prepubertal and pubertal influences in relation to Hct and HGB. Whether factors that promote leg growth but reduce growth of sitting height may help to prevent cardiovascular events, via effects on hypercoagulability or viscosity, overall or in specific subgroups, remains to be determined. BackgroundThe brain is perfused at high-volume flow throughout systole and diastole. We explored the association of blood flow in the middle cerebral artery (MCA) with the pulsatile components of blood pressure in the systemic circulation and indices of arterial stiffness.MethodsWe enrolled 334 untreated subjects (mean age, 50.9 years; 45.4% women) who had been referred for ambulatory blood pressure monitoring to Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai, China. We measured the MCA pulsatility index (PI) by transcranial Doppler ultrasonography. The indices of arterial stiffness included pulse pressure (brachial (bPP) and central (cPP) measured at the office and 24-h ambulatory (24-h PP)) and carotid-femoral (cf-PWV) and brachial-ankle (ba-PWV) pulse wave velocity. Effect sizes, expressed per 1 s.d., were adjusted for sex, age, heart rate, and mean pressure.ResultsWomen had faster MCA blood flow than men (68.0 vs. 58.3 cm/s), but lower PI (75.4 vs. 82.3%; P < 0.001). The five arterial stiffness indices were intercorrelated (r ≥ 0.37; P < 0.001). PI increased (P ≤ 0.045) with bPP (+6.78%), cPP (+5.56%), 24-h PP (+7.58%), cf-PWV (+1.59%), and ba-PWV (+3.46%). In explaining PI variance, bPP ranked first (partial r2 = 0.25), 24-h PP second (0.20) and cPP third (0.14). In models including both cf-PWV and ba-PWV, only the latter was significant (−0.19%; P = 0.84 vs. +3.54%; P < 0.001). Objective: Hemodynamic changes in response to the hypoxic environment of high altitude are vascular bed-specific. The aim of the present study was to investigate diameter and blood flow changes in conduit vessels in response to hypobaric hypoxia. Methods: Eleven healthy subjects ascending Mount Everest to base camp participated in this study. Vessel diameter and blood velocity for brachial, carotid, common femoral, superficial femoral, and deep femoral arteries were measured by portable Doppler ultrasound. Blood flow was calculated from these values. Measurements were taken at sea level, at increasing altitudes on ascent to base camp (1310 m, 3470 m, 5330 m), and repeated on descent to lower altitude (1310 m). Results: For all vessels except carotids, both vessel diameter and blood flow decreased between sea level and initial ascent to altitude, with subsequent persistence of these decreased values; there was no further significant change with continued ascent to higher altitude. Blood flow for all arteries (except carotids) increased significantly on descent to lower altitude, with an associated nonsignificant increase in velocity and decrease in diameter. Conclusions: This study showed that there is vasoconstriction of limb conduit vessels at altitude, which persists upon descent to lower altitude. Blood flow in these vessels also decreases with initial exposure to high altitude, yet increases when returning to lower altitude, reflecting variations in blood velocity. Carotid arteries responded differently to the stimulus of hypobaria than limb conduit vessels; there was no change in diameter seen on ascent or descent, but there was a progressive decrease in blood flow on ascent, with no change on subsequent descent. Background: It is well documented that lower pump flow during clinical cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) procedures may be significantly detrimental to tissues and organs. The major cause of hypoperfusion is due to shunting flow existing in the closed CPB circuits. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate various shunting flow conditions in a simulated adult CPB model under normothermia.Materials and Methods: The pseudo adult patient undergoing CPB was established with an extracorporeal circuit. The pre-oxygenator flow, post-filter flow and purge line pressure were recorded. The temperature of the circuit was kept around 36°C using a heat-cooler. The pseudo patient was subjected to five pump flow rates ranging from 3000 to 5000 ml/min (500 ml/min increments), and post-filter pressure was varied from 120—220 mmHg (20 mmHg increments) using a single, static roller pump. Four different shunting states were measured with two flowmeters.Results: When the pump flow was constant, the percentage of shunting flow increased as the post-filter pressure increased in State 1. However, when the post-filter pressure was constant, the trend of the shunting flow was the opposite. Purge line pressure increased with the increase of the post-filter pressure at a constant pump flow rate in State 1. The shunting flow for State 2 was the largest of the four states. The shunting flow for State 3 was similar to State 4. Conclusion: During different states of shunt opening, varying degrees of blood flow were diverted away from the arterial line. Myocardial dysfunction leading to low cardiac output syndrome is a common clinical pathophysiological state. Currently, the use of mechanical circulatory support (MCS) is an essential aspect of the treatment of patients with cardiac failure. Several groups in China are engaged in the design and development of MCS devices. These devices can be classified as pulsatile, rotary, and total artificial heart (TAH). There are two types of pulsatile pump, which are driven by air (pneumatic). One of these pumps, the Luo-Ye pump, has been used clinically for short-term support since 1998. The other is a push-plate left ventricular device, which has a variable rate mode. Various rotary devices are classified into axial and centrifugal pumps, depending on the impeller geometry. Most rotary pumps are based on the maglev principle, and some types have been used clinically. Others are still being studied in the laboratory or in animal experiments. Furthermore, certain types of total implantable pump, such as the UJS-III axial pump and the UJS-IV aortic valvo-pump, have been developed. Only one type of TAH has been developed in China. The main constituents of this artificial heart are two axial pumps, two reservoir tanks mimicking the right and left atria, flow meters, two pressure gauges, and a resistance adaptor. Abstract: Carotid body tumors (CBT) are rare neoplasms arising from the small chemoreceptor organ in the adventitia of the common carotid bifurcation. A retrospective survey was conducted in 33 patients, treated by curative resection of the neoplasm, from 1980 to 2005, to investigate clinical features, preoperative treatment and surgical approach, and determine the optimum management for CBT. The demographic characteristics, clinical features, surgical approach and complications were documented and analyzed. Accurate diagnosis and effective preoperative training were associated with a good surgical outcome. Carotid arteriography accurately diagnoses and evaluates the brain''s collateral circulation in the circle of Willis. Ultrasonography is useful. Carotid blood flow obstruction (Matas’ training) is effective. Complete excision of the carotid system without a vascular replacement is possible only after reliable Matas’ training and objective observation of the establishment of circulation in the circle of Willis. Correct treatment of the internal and common carotid artery is important to reduce postoperative complications. The continuity of the common and internal carotid artery should be retained if possible, and carotid artery repair is recommended. Minor complications occurred in five (15%) patients and one patient died from a cause not related to the CBT at follow-up. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

We report the first direct observations of deranged microcirculatory blood flow at high altitude, using sidestream dark-field imaging. Images of the sublingual microcirculation were obtained from a group of 12 volunteers during a climbing expedition to Cho Oyu (8,201 m) in the Himalayas. Microcirculatory flow index (MFI) was calculated from the moving images of microcirculatory red blood cell flow, and comparison was made between the baseline and high altitude measurements. Peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO(2)) and Lake Louise scores (LLS) were recorded along with MFI. Our data demonstrate that there was a significant reduction in MFI from baseline to 4,900 m in small (less than 25 microm) and medium (26-50 microm) sized blood vessels (P = 0.025 and P = 0.046, respectively). There was no significant correlation between MFI and SpO(2) or MFI and LLS. Disruption of blood flow within microcirculatory may explain persistent abnormal oxygen flux to tissues following the normalisation of systemic oxygen delivery that accompanies acclimatisation to high altitude. Ophiopogon japonicus polysaccharide (FOJ-5) from Radix ophiopogonis has shown anti-myocardial ischemic action in vitro and in vivo in our previous studies. In order to clarify the influence of chemical modifications on the action, a series of sulfated FOJ-5 (FOJ-5-S) with different substitution degrees were prepared and the anti-myocardial ischemic action of the natural FOJ-5 and the FOJ-5-S were studied in vitro and in vivo. Langendorff isolated rat hearts and acute myocardial ischemic rats induced by isoprenaline were employed as myocardial ischemic models in our experiments. The amplitude and frequency of cardiac contraction, coronary blood flow at different time points after ischemia/reperfusion were measured in vitro. The ST segment shift in electrocardiogram and lactate dehydrogenase level in blood plasma were observed on the in vivo model. The results indicated that FOJ-5 and FOJ-5-S had the anti-myocardial ischemic action compared with non-treated vehicle groups. Furthermore, it was found that FOJ-5-S had significant action on the in vivo model compared with FOJ-5 (P < 0.05). And the obtained results from the further study also indicated that only when the degree of substitution was in a certain range, the FOJ-5-S had excellent anti-myocardial ischemic activity. The Ocular Blood Flow (OBF) Tonometer is an objective instrument to measure the Pulsatile Ocular Blood Flow (POBF), Pulse Amplitude (PA) and Pulse Rate (PR). It also provides the minimum intraocular pressure (lOPmin) simultaneously. This preliminary study applied the OBF Tonometer on 74 Hong Kong Chinese. They had their POBF measured followed by the Goldmann Applanation Tonometer (GAT). The OBF tonometer overestimates the lOP slightly. The average POBF result was smaller (661.2 μl/min) than the previous studies. The effect of myopia of our sample (mean spherical equivalent -4.27 D) could be one of the contributing factors. Other factors include age and racial difference. Twenty-two subjects had their POBF measured again by the same practitioner and different practitioner for the reproducibility variation assessments. The POBF, PA and lOPmin were found to be repeatable between sessions. The POBF "norm" in Hong Kong Chinese needs to be established from a larger sample size and from a comparison on an age and refraction matched Caucasian group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

River course is the path of carrying river flow and the blood of modern economic and social development. River operation management has attracted great attention from governments and water conservancy circles all over the world. In China, the river operation management mode refers to the combination of two dimensions: The organization method of river operation management and the bearing and use method of river maintenance fund. Based on the practice of China, we used a two-dimensional matrix method to construct a feasible mode set, including 12 modes, according to the various organization methods of river operation management and the bearing and use methods of river maintenance fund over the years in China. We also compared and analyzed the advantages, disadvantages, and applicable conditions of these 12 river operation management modes. In particular, we investigated the main rivers of 19 provinces and municipalities in China, identified the main factors of the river operation management mode, further identified 5 key indexes, and constructed a decision-making index system for the river operation management mode. We used the intuitionistic fuzzy hybrid average (IFHA) and intuitionistic fuzzy weighted average (IFWA) operators to construct a set of river operation management mode selection method based on intuitionistic fuzzy decision-making. A case study was conducted to select the operation management mode for the Heilongjiang section of Songhua River, using the method put forward in this paper. The mandarin fish, Siniperca chuatsi , is a kind of ferocious carnivorous fish, which has highly economic value with the characteristic of rapid growth and delicious flesh. Large scale industrial breeding of mandarin fish has been realized widely in China. The triploid in mandarin fish S. chuatsi had been induced by hydrostatic pressure shock. The most effective condition of triploidy induction was initiation of pressure treatment 6 min after fertilization, duration of treatment 2 min and magnitude of pressure 450 kg/cm2 in which could result in 72% triploid fish. There were no significant differences of the survival of triploid rates among the three treatment groups, which include holding for 4 min, 6 min, and 8 min after fertilization. The efficiency of triploidization was confirmed by counting the number of chromosomes and was affirmed by DNA content determination using flow cytometry with blood cells of one-month old fingerlings. The chromosome count of induced triploids was 3n = 72 while diploid fish had 2n = 48. The flow cytometry shows that DNA content in experimental group was 1.5 times as the control group. QiShenYiQi Pills (QSYQ) is a compound Chinese medicine widely used in China for treatment of cardiovascular disease. However, limited data are available regarding the anti-fibrotic role of QSYQ after ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. This study aimed to investigate the effect of post-treatment with QSYQ on myocardial fibrosis after I/R-induced myocardium injury, and the role of different compounds of QSYQ, focusing especially on the involvement of chemokine ribosomal protein S19 (RP S19) dimer and monocyte migration. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to left anterior descending coronary artery occlusion for 30 min followed by reperfusion with or without administration of QSYQ (0.6, 1.2, or 1.8 g/kg) once daily by gavage for 6 days. Post-treatment with QSYQ diminished I/R-induced infarct size, alleviated myocardium injury, attenuated myocardial fibrosis after 6 days of reperfusion, and restored heart function and myocardial blood flow after I/R. In addition, the drug significantly inhibited monocyte infiltration and macrophage polarization towards M2, which was attributable to chemokine RP S19 dimer. Moreover, Western blots revealed that QSYQ blocked I/R-induced increase in TGFβ1 and TGFβRⅡ and reversed its relevant gene expression, such as Smad3,4,6,7, and inhibited the increase of MMP 2,9 expression. As the major components of QSYQ, astragaloside IV (AsIV), 3,4-dihydroxy-phenyl lactic acid (DLA), and notoginsenoside R1 (R1) were assessed as to the contribution of each of them to the expression of the proteins concerned. The results showed that the effect of AsIV was similar to QSYQ, while DLA and R1 only partly simulated the effect of QSYQ. The results provide evidence for the potential role of QSYQ in treating myocardial fibrosis following I/R injury. This effect may be associated with QSYQ's inhibition effect on monocyte chemotaxis and TGFβ1/Smads signaling pathway with different component targeting distinct link (s) of the signaling.
