Summary: Recognition of the role that biofilms play in the persistence of wounds and lack of response to therapy in horses is increasing. Prevention of biofilm development in the early stages of wound care involves three primary strategies: wound debridement and cleansing to reduce bacterial counts in the wound bed, appropriate use of advanced wound dressings and implementation of topical antimicrobial agents. Once formed, eradication of biofilms requires elimination to improve the wound environment for contraction and epithelialisation while not further harming the native cells integral to the healing process, which is achieved predominantly through repeated lavage and debridement combined with topical antimicrobial therapy. Pseudomonas, Enterococcus and Staphylococcus bacterial species have been most commonly identified in equine wounds with delayed healing. This review will establish why and how biofilms form, how to recognise clinical indications that biofilms have formed in equine wounds and review current diagnostic options and biofilm‐based wound care strategies to eradicate biofilms. Clinical scenarios for cases in which biofilms developed and were successfully treated will be presented. Background: Wounds inflict pain and affect human health causing high expenditure on treatment and management. Herbal crude extracts are used in traditional medicine as a treatment for wounds and other illnesses. However, the progress in the use of plants has been deterred due to their poor solubility and poor bioavailability requiring administration at high doses. It has been established that nanoencapsulation of herbal products in nanocarriers (size 1 nm to 100 nm) such as nanofibers, nanoparticles, nanospheres, and nanoliposomes greatly improves their efficacy. Due to their small and large surface area, nanocarriers are more biologically active, improve bioavailability, protect the drug from deterioration, and release it to the targeted site in a sustainable manner. Aim: The review aims to collate and appraise evidence on the efficacy of nano encapsulated herbal extracts in the treatment of induced wounds in animal models. Methods: The review will be protocol-driven and conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis for Protocols (PRISMA-P) and protocol guidelines for systematic review and meta-analysis for animal intervention studies. The final review will be conducted and reported with reference to PRISMA 2020 statement. Studies will be searched in Pub Med, ProQuest, Web of Science, Medline Ovid, EMBASE, and Google Scholar. The PRISMA flow criteria will be followed in screening the articles for inclusion. Data extraction form will be designed in Excel spreadsheet 2013 and data extracted based on the primary and secondary outcomes. Risk of bias assessment will be done using SYRCLE's risk of bias tool for animal studies. Data analysis will be done using narrative and quantitative synthesis. Expected results: We hope to make meaningful comparisons between the effectiveness of the herb-loaded nanomaterials and other interventions (controls) in the selected studies, based on the primary and secondary outcome measures. We expect that these findings to inform clinical practice on whether preclinical studies show enough quality evidence on the efficacy and safety of herbal-loaded nanomaterials that can be translated into clinical trials and further research. Wounds are the loss or destruction of part of the body's tissue, if the wound is not treated it will lead to infection and may interfere with livestock production. The faster the healing process occurs, the less likely secondary infections are to develop and become more severe. Clinically, various treatments and medicines, mainly those of chemical origin, have been introduced to facilitate and accelerate the wound healing process, but their use is limited due to side effects or low efficiency. Some substances and active substances are used to accelerate the process, but in this case herbal or medicinal plants can be used as an alternative in treating wounds in livestock, these plants have long been used as herbal medicines for humans and livestock. Moringa leaves contain phytochemicals that have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities that can help the wound healing process. Compounds in Moringa leaves that play a role in wound healing include flavonoids, saponins, tannins, antibacterial, antiseptic, antimicrobial, and polyphenolic compounds. This review discusses and explains Moringa leaves on their medicinal function in livestock. Wound healing is the most important property for organisms and is the process of cell recovery because poor wound healing can cause physical pain, discomfort, and also bring a series of psychological problems to livestock. The treatment and care of human wounds represent an enormous burden on the medical system and patients alike. Chronic or delayed healing wounds are characterized by the inability to form proper granulation tissue, followed by deficiencies in keratinocyte migration and wound re-epithelialization, leading to increased likelihood of infection and poor wound outcomes. Human reticular acellular dermal matrix (HR-ADM) is one type of tissue graft developed to enhance closure of delayed healing wounds that has demonstrated clinical utility through accelerating closure of lower extremity diabetic ulcers, but the mechanisms underlying this clinical success are not well understood. The authors utilized a diabetic murine splinted excisional wound model to investigate the effects of HR-ADM application on wound closure. The authors demonstrate that application of HR-ADM served as a dermal scaffold and promoted rapid re-epithelialization and keratinocyte proliferation, resulting in accelerated wound closure while minimizing granulation tissue formation. HR-ADM-applied wounds also demonstrated evidence of cellular infiltration, neovascularization and collagen remodeling by the host organism. These data suggest that HR-ADM supports epidermal closure in delayed healing wounds and remodeling of the matrix into host tissue, lending further support to the clinical success of HR-ADM described in clinical reports. Most acute wounds will heal with good topical care. However, some wounds, especially chronic ones occurring in impaired hosts, are more problematic. Objective: Evaluate the effect of topical 1% cannabidiol on second intention wound healing in distal limb wounds of horses. Design: Experimental. Animals: Six Standardbred horses. Methods: A total of five 2.5 cm × 2.5 cm full thickness skin wounds were created on the dorsomedial aspect of the metacarpi of 6 horses. Wounds were contaminated with faeces on the day of wound creation. Each wound was then assigned to a treatment group; compounded 1% cannabidiol in unique manuka factor (UMF) 5 manuka honey, UMF 5 manuka honey, UMF 20 manuka honey or saline. Each treatment was applied topically daily for a total of 42 days. Legs were bandaged and bandages were changed, daily, for 13 days postoperatively. Digital photographs of each wound were taken on day 1 then weekly for 6 weeks. Wound size, daily healing rate and total time to healing were recorded and compared statistically. Results: Irrespective of the treatment, wounds did not retract as expected in the first 7 days after wound creation. There was no difference in wound area, daily healing rate, days to complete healing between treatment groups. Conclusions: This preliminary study failed to demonstrate any difference in wound healing variables between treatment groups in this model of second intention wound healing. This was unexpected due to the established effects of UMF 20 manuka honey on wound healing using the same model. This may be due to systemic effects of cannabidiol and study design. Despite the generous blood supply, and resultant healing capacity within the head and neck, complex wounds in this area may be extremely debilitating and present an obstacle to treatment for the reconstructive surgeon. Delayed, incomplete, or otherwise suboptimal wound healing within this anatomical region may lead to both functional and aesthetically displeasing outcomes, resulting in impaired speech or swallowing, social stigma, and, in severe cases, exposure of critical underlying structures. Due to implications, with regard to wound formation following surgical intervention, the facial reconstructive surgeon, in particular, must be familiar with the multitude of treatment modalities available. This article serves as a review of the underlying pathophysiology of wound healing, local and systemic processes that may influence the healing process, and treatments that facilitate tissue restoration while mitigating future complications. Summary: Introduction: Skin rejuvenation procedures have become common with sophisticated technologies with reduced downtime and related risks. Recently, microneedling has been paired with radiofrequency to create Fractional Radiofrequency Microneedling (FRFM) to induce neocollagenesis. Frequently, topical products are applied immediately after the needling. This procedure is known as percutaneous collagen induction therapy (PCIT). Postoperative topical wound care is critical for prompt rapid and safe healing, with moist wound healing deemed of primary importance for fast and correct scarring process. An ideal dressing enables a moist environment while reducing postprocedural inflammatory responses in the first stages of wound healing. Objective: To evaluate whether an innovative silicone‐based wound dressing is superior than standard of care therapy in decreasing severity and duration of treatment‐site acute inflammatory reactions post PCIT. Materials and Methods: Endymed PRO Intensif Handpiece (Endymed, Israel) was used for the full‐face FRFM procedure. Subjects (n = 20) applied treatment (Stratacel®—Stratpharma SG, Switzerland) and control (Aquaphor®—Beiersdorf Inc, USA) immediately after the procedure and daily; they were evaluated immediately postprocedure (baseline assessment), at 2, 3 and 7 days postprocedure. Digital and 3D pictures (Antera 3D Camera for Skin Analysis—Miravex, Ireland) were taken at each assessment. Results: All patients healed properly without reporting adverse reactions to any of the studied products. Erythema at each study visit was significantly reduced with the use of the novel wound dressing (P < 0.001). A statistically significant difference in favor of the innovative wound dressing also emerged with respect to the patient‐rated product properties (P = 0.008), such as feel on skin, drying time and stickiness. Conclusions: The novel wound dressing reduced signs of acute inflammation following PCIT when compared to standard of care, without reporting adverse events and resulting in a more favorable outcome from a patient perspective. This article examines the treatment of facial wounds in early modern Britain through a close study of the casebook of St Bartholomew's Hospital surgeon Joseph Binns (d. 1664). It explores surgeons' and related practitioners' special attention to the care and infliction of facial wounds and scarring in their practice, including impairments to facial movement and expression, the use of specific suturing techniques and the reduced use of stitches, and the development of agglutinative medicaments. The face was recognised as a site of immense vulnerability and exposure, requiring particular care, and this vulnerability was mirrored in the capacity for facial scarring to detrimentally advertise a practitioner's skill. This essay reads Binns' unpublished notes against the cases and theoretical ideals set out in published texts from surgeons such as the Scottish Alexander Read, the East India Company surgeon John Woodall, and the London surgeon and physician Daniel Turner. I argue that both the textbooks and Binns' practice demonstrate awareness of the special role of the face in the early modern period, and that this guided the medical approach to disfiguring injuries and conditions. Skin tears are frequently encountered in emergency and unscheduled care, and are prevalent in older people. Patients may present soon after an acute skin tear, or at a later stage when the wound presentation is different and there are complications. This article describes evidence-based recommendations and strategies for the prevention, assessment and management of skin tears, discusses risk factors and explains when to refer patients for specialist management. Chronic wounds are a common and debilitating complication for the diabetic population. It is challenging to study the development of chronic wounds in human patients; by the time it is clear that a wound is chronic, the early phases of wound healing have passed and can no longer be studied. Because of this limitation, mouse models have been employed to better understand the early phases of chronic wound formation. In the past few years, a series of reports have highlighted the importance of reactive oxygen species and bacterial biofilms in the development of chronic wounds in diabetics. We review these recent findings and discuss mouse models that are being utilized to enhance our understanding of these potentially important contributors to chronic wound formation in diabetic patients. This case study details the healing of a chronic wound (20years' duration) in a patient with dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (EB). Many different dressings and creams had been used, and on occasions the wound began to heal but never progressed to closure. A honey impregnated dressing was used and the wound healed in 15 weeks. The district nursing team had to manage a breast sinus wound which produced copious amounts of exudate and caused further problems because of its shape and position. Using a hydrofibre dressing the wound successfully healed without causing any problems with maceration to the surrounding skin. However, the nurses were unsure as to what was the correct amount of dressing to pack into the wound, as there are no specific guidelines on how tightly to pack wounds and this can influence the successful outcome of wound healing. Objective To report the design and benefits of a rigid polyethylene cover 'shell' for the protection of dorsal torso wounds and tube fixation in pigs. Methods Open C-shaped polyethylene shells were designed to protect wounds and dressings on the dorsum of pigs used in research into negative pressure dressing-assisted wound healing. The shells were designed to resist trauma and contamination, to be comfortable and expansible, and to facilitate tube fixation and management. Strap fixation was optimised during experimentation. Efficacy was assessed by direct observation of dressing and wound protection, tube integrity and by macroscopic and microscopic assessments of wound healing. Results The shells effectively protected the wounds against blunt and sharp trauma, were simple to remove and reapply, were well tolerated and allowed for growth of the pigs. Circumferential neck straps attached by lateral straps to the shells proved critical. There was no wound infection or inflammation underlying the shells. Porting tubing via mid-dorsal holes in the shells and affixing the tubing just cranial to these holes prevented tube damage and traction, permitted tube management from outside the cages and allowed the pigs to move freely without becoming entangled. Conclusion These shells effectively protected dorsal skin wounds and dressings, prevented tube damage and facilitated tube management in pigs. Similar systems may be useful for other production animals for wound management and for tube management with negative pressure wound healing, drain tubes or the delivery of nutrition, fluids or medications.
