This article examines the impact of methodological choices and collaborative processes in a complex study that delved into the intimate experiences of violence as narrated by conscripts to the Peruvian armed forces. Lurgio Gavilán is a Peruvian anthropologist who strongly identifies with the interviewed veterans because of his own experiences, and Jelke Boesten is European feminist scholar with specific ideas about gender justice. Our collaboration allows us to raise fundamental questions around the limitations, validity, and ethics of knowledge production. The "debris" of this collaboration refers to the ethical questions that we may have previously failed to raise and address. Why did each of us embark on this research? Have our respective epistemological positions shifted due to the research? How has the nature of the collaboration, and our different positions of power therein, enlightened or concerned us? How meaning is created, circulated, and manipulated in the post-truth era is not selfevident. How are we to distinguish between the distribution and power of constructed information and knowledge production? These were questions at the core of the discursive project on epistemology entitled How do you know? at KHiO Oslo National Academy of the Arts in 2017/2018. How do you know? was initiated by professor Apolonija Šušteršič, a Slovenian architect and visual artist whose work is related to critical analysis of public space, and Maria Lind, a Swedish curator, art writer, and educator. In this project, they focused on current ways of thinking and how these generate significance across fields such as art, philosophy, science, and education. In the following conversation, Šušteršič and Lind use their experience from How do you know? to look back on how they have worked together on several occasions since 1997. 'Open Science' advocates for open access to scientific research, as well as sharing data, analysis plans and code in order to enable replication of results. However, these requirements typically fail to account for methodological differences between quantitative and qualitative research, and serious ethical problems are raised by the suggestion that full qualitative datasets can or should be published alongside qualitative research papers. Aside from important ethical concerns, the idea of sharing qualitative data in order to enable replication is conceptually at odds with the underpinnings on most qualitative methodologies, which highlight the importance of the unique interpretative function of the researcher. The question of whether secondary analysis of qualitative data is acceptable is key, and in this commentary we argue that there are good conceptual, ethical and economic reasons to consider how funders, researchers and publishers can make better use of existing data. Departing from the methodological story of my doctoral research and deploying feminist, postcolonial, and decolonial epistemologies, this article explores the double connotation of the phrase 'challenging methodologies'. On the one hand, the article reviews the process of my doctoral research, the challenges I faced, and how these oriented my methodological decisions. On the other hand, it examines the three methodologies I chose – grounded theory, online research, and narrative inquiry – to understand how they originated to challenge unjust canonical research processes that undermine different ways of generating knowledge and reinforce epistemic silencing. By exploring 'challenging methodologies', the article invites (novice) researchers to contest unjust research processes and embark on their own creative, albeit challenging, methodological paths. The study of digital disconnection – the voluntary non-use of digital media – is a growing research domain characterized by increasingly pluralistic approaches. To map this diverse terrain, we offer an analytical heuristic: a continuum of approaches to digital disconnection. This tool proposes one primary dimension – viewing digital disconnection as individually functional to socially meaningful (ontology) – and two secondary, concomitant dimensions – holding post-positive to interpretivist perspectives on knowledge generation (epistemology) as well as applying quantitative to qualitative methods (methodology). We offer examples of scholarship along the continuum and advocate for the complementarity of different approaches. Although the continuum is not a universal framework, it provides a tool for scholars to review the domain and for digital disconnection researchers specifically to locate themselves on and build bridges across the continuum. This paper explores the use of testimonio methodology, born from Chicana/Latina feminist thought and epistemologies as a way of exploring the languaging and knowledge production practices of minoritized communities as a platform to share their/our wisdom/voices in applied linguistics. As such, testimonio is a methodology that allows racialized scholars and accomplices to foreground their/our languaging and knowledges and thus disrupt deficit framings. This paper explores the benefits of using testimonios in applied linguistics as one way of disrupting epistemological racism. Drawing on examples from three different youth who took part in a multiyear culturally sustaining systemic functional linguistics oriented program we show the power of using various types of testimonios to examine/understand the languaging and literacies practices of racialized youth. Global challenges call for timely social--ecological transformation. There is a substantial amount of literature on social--ecological transformation, increasingly replacing and going beyond 'sustainability'. However, the concept itself is used very inconsistently. This paper aims at identifying and systematizing the strains of argumentation that encompass the social--ecological transformation. Adding German-speaking literature to the Anglophone debate, we systematize as we follow the concept's genesis to its varieties of use within context-based (spatial, temporal, and societal) disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary debates. Building on the various strands of contemporary use, this paper aims at contouring the epistemologies of the concept. Lastly, we illustrate the roles of geographical research approaches and the assigned methodology. We argue that the strands tend to drift apart and cannot be seen nor used as a singular uniform approach. We identify the key dimensions of how scholars use social--ecological transformation, unearthing underlying epistemologies. Therapeutic Jurisprudence is a legal philosophy concerned with the human effects of the law. Its scholarly work promotes greater interaction between law and the social sciences to draw attention to the therapeutic and/or anti-therapeutic side-effects of law. Despite significant headway having been made in therapeutic jurisprudence scholarship during its relatively short lifespan, there remain gaps in theory, not least, in terms of the ontological and epistemological commitments that underpin and drive its research, as well as how its methodology resonates with those from its predecessor schools: legal realism and sociological jurisprudence. This essay will respond to these gaps and, in doing so, will also acknowledge some of the key similarities and differences in the methodological underpinnings of the claims from legal realism and sociological jurisprudence (as well as legal positivism and formalism). Aiming to disrupt the way fashion studies is developed – often from a Eurocentric approach and within rigid disciplinary, methodological and social boundaries – this Special Issue invites different scholars to present their own way of studying and exploring fashion, but also to make their familiar methods strange, re-assessing what fashion means and what it means to do fashion research in the first place. Promoting an interdisciplinary dialogue, the articles in this Special Issue show how fashion studies would benefit from 'bending' existing methodological boundaries and blending cross-disciplinary methodologies, conceptual orientations, objects, ideas, forms, subjects and questions in their epistemological approach. We hope that the curation, organization and general assemblage of the texts give rise to the intellectual alchemy of unpredictable encounters: conversations, clashes and contradictions. Function-first approaches illuminate phenomena by investigating their functional roles. I first describe virtues of this approach. By foregrounding normal instances of knowledge, for example, function-first theorising offers a much-needed corrective to epistemology's counterexample-driven momentum towards increasingly byzantine, marginal cases. And epistemic practices are shaped by human limitations, needs, vices, and power relations. These non-ideal, naturalistic forces of embodied sociality form the roots of function-first theorising, which creates a fecund foundation for social epistemology. Secondly, I consider an objection to function-first theorising. The objection holds that function-first approaches lack adjudicatory power. That is, function-first proposals are overly compatible with diverse claims about knowledge, which encourages "just so" speculation. In response to this concern, I advocate methodological pluralism in epistemological theorising. All methods have limitations; researchers must be mindful of those limits and fruitfully combine multiple methods. I illustrate with Hannon's function-first based arguments for "epistemic pragmatism", which denies that the meaning of "knows" is determined by truth conditions. Finally, I argue that function-first theorising motivates staunch anti-skepticism about knowledge. Practical forces cannot chisel a sharp threshold for how much evidence is required for knowledge. But thinking this supports radical skepticism about knowledge conflates fuzzy thresholds and high ones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper focuses on the epistemic inequality of international students as a "new" inequality that is under-represented in the current debates about decolonisation (albeit shaped by colonial discourses depicting international students as in deficit and incapable of meeting the standards of (colonial) universities). In this theoretical context, the paper reflects on a multi-modal digital methodology used in a research project that aimed to understand how international students deploy their epistemological resources to learn the curriculum. The paper describes selected artefacts submitted by the students around which their epistemic frames were expressed, suggesting where these may be concealed by epistemological situatedness of the lecturers. Based on the analysis of these artefacts, the paper develops and interrogates an epistemology for support towards interrogating the role of our own epistemological binaries in adversely affecting students' epistemic frames in the curriculum. There has been much debate in recent years about how open research practices, which have been promoted in efforts to improve research robustness, may (not) be appropriate for qualitative methodologies, particularly in educational research. Among these is a concern for replication efforts. Makel et al. (2022) make the case that "replication is relevant to qualitative research". The authors argue that concerns surrounding the transferability, intentionality, and transparency of qualitative research may be eased, or responded to, by replication studies. Here, I argue that there are three fundamental questions that need unpacking before declarative claims can be made about the relevance of replication to qualitative research. This includes critical questioning of what we mean by: replication, qualitative research, and rigour. I address each of these issues and encourage a more nuanced appraisal of how replication may, or may not, be epistemologically, ontologically, or methodologically compatible with the goals of qualitative research. The aim of this special issue is to explore the intersections of logic, intended as the formal science of valid consequence, and politics, the practical science of associated life. The analyses here provided deal with the theme in two ways: by considering what logic can do for politics, so proposing possible formalizations of political arguments, or using logical notions and tools to interpret political facts and problems; by considering what politics can do for logic, so examining how logical choices are and have been affected or determined by extra-logical facts of political relevance. The Narrative Productions' Methodology emerges from Haraway's epistemological and political concept of "situated knowledges". According to this perspective, all knowledge emerges from semiotic and material conditions that give rise to a specific gaze, which diverges from both a gaze "from nowhere" - realism - and a gaze "from everywhere" - relativism. Unlike realist and relativist perspectives, the Narrative Productions' Methodology reintroduces the notion of an "author" localized in a web of relations and speech genres. Furthermore, in the Narrative Productions' Methodology, the alternative to the critique of the representation of others through the research act - typical of traditional research - consists in the possibility of partial connections with those close to the phenomenon under study. Thus, this methodology suggests that the research team connects with these positions over several sessions. This procedure will produce a hybrid text that expresses a certain way of understanding the phenomenon and guarantees the participants' agency over the product. This article will introduce the fundamental principles of this methodology using a study on the events that happened in Barcelona in June 2001 on the occasion of the World Bank summit. The article presents a theoretical-methodological innovation by proposing the outline of the Plausible Action Theory, which arises from an unlikely synthesis between cultural hermeneutics and mathematical probability. This synthesis is possible for two reasons: both theoretical-methodological currents accept Heisenberg's uncertainty principle (1949), and both understand that there are multiple causes (explanations) for a given response (explained). They have also overlooked an analytical model of association with more than one response term. Therefore, the innovation of this article lies in the proposition of a model with multiple causes and effects. We will refer to this relationship as the hypothesis of the duality of cause and consequence. Through the statistical technique of Path Analysis, we can construct models, albeit limited from a statistical testing perspective, that do not refute the hypothesis of duplicity, i.e., of multiple causes and multiple consequences related to the social origins and destinies of individuals. Through an analysis of social mobility and using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and multiple independent, intervening, and dependent factors, it was observed that there is not a single answer in terms of social outcomes. We used a probabilistic sample study with information from the Social Dimensions of Inequality Survey, from the year 2008, related to Brazil. We conclude that there is a limitation in cultural hermeneutics and statistical probability in the sense that these approaches do not understand the multiple responses given certain causes, as if the responses were unique or as if they did not change over time and space [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this commentary we reflect on Shaalan, Eid, and Tourky's (2022) article in which they investigated the Chinese concept and practice of guanxi in the Middle East,1 a region in which wasta represents the common way of informal networking.2 While we encourage and welcome research into informal networks, we have serious concerns about the conceptual and methodological approaches taken by Shaalan et al. They can be viewed as tools for interpretive description as well as cognitive representations of an empirical phenomenon. However, discussions about how to develop models in qualitative research – particularly in the literature on thematic analysis – are sparse. Aim: To discuss an approach to scientific qualitative modelling that uses the new technique described in the first part of this article (Gildberg and Wilson 2023): the Empirical Test for Thematic Analysis (ETTA). Discussion: The authors discuss scientific models and their inherent limitations and strengths, so that others may assess models and their potential. Conclusion: A limitation of ETTA is the risk that excessive rigour and systematisation could reduce creativity in the construction of models. However, on balance there is a scientific need for qualitative researchers to improve their capability to refine and describe the techniques they use to construct models, adequately explain the reliable generation of models, and improve transparency regarding the epistemological and methodological basis for the construction of models. Implications for practice: By using ETTA on qualitative data obtained from clinical practice it becomes possible to illuminate the interconnections among themes within the data. This approach not only assists in illustrating these connections, it also enables clinicians and researchers to gain a comprehensive understanding of specific clinical phenomena through the use of models. The process of developing and using these models enables the simulation and strategic intervention development based on data that addresses the specific problem being investigated. The article focuses on the unresolved mystery surrounding the emergence of the number zero in history. Topics include the collaboration between the Zero Project and Closer to Truth to explore ultimate questions like 'Why is there Something rather than Nothing?', the objective of shedding light on the origin of zero and its significance in representing 'Nothing,' and the challenges faced in assembling interdisciplinary teams to investigate the invention/discovery of zero.

In this contribution, the identity theory is reconsidered in respect to its epistemology. The social identity theory (SIT) and social identity complexity theory (SICT) are both instruments of social sciences based on naturalistic assumptions. The question is asked if social identity theories can fully account for the Christian identity, especially in respect to being confined to the natural, social domain. In light of the way that identity is presented in the New Testament, and especially the way in which the Christian identity is presented as a socially foreign identity in texts such as 1 Peter 1:1; 2:11; Philippians 3:20 and Ephesians 2:19, a more holistic approach to identity that includes aspects of a supernaturalistic epistemology is considered. In other words, a holistic theory of identity is considered, in which the Christian identity is described in terms of one's relationship to other people (sociological), as well as one's relationship to God (theological). Within various African cultures, discussion of sexuality is typically secretive and reticent. Because of the multiple and sometimes contradictory narratives about sexuality, researching it in this context remains a very sensitive and knitted terrain, requiring careful navigation of historical, sociocultural and religious factors. The state of such scholarship in Nigeria is here explored critically, drawing on my experience of studying traditional aphrodisiacs in Ilorin. In this article, I present a reflection on the epistemological grounding of that work, my positionality and fieldwork experience, as well as the dilemmas, challenges and the politics of researching sexuality in Nigeria. I argue that the complexity of a researcher's identity and embodiments is not to be treated as redundant; instead, it needs to be taken into account in legitimate and productive ways. Focusing on these elements and experiences during fieldwork revealed how researchers can have the opportunity to contour, compound and contribute to a qualitative study. With Haiti at its helm, this article reimagines the conch shell as a methodology of resistance and renewal. The Lambi model is presented to interpret temporal pathways and ancestral practices within African Diaspora lives. Time and space serve as axes of intersection, connecting and delineating points of departure surrounding race, space, power, and freedom. A framework is established through the works of three Haitian writers and activists: Jemima Pierre, Michel-Rolph Trouillot, and Edwidge Danticat. Grounded in an Antillean feminist lens, this formulation of Diaspora identity carries the cadence of a fluid and holistic orientation with ontological, epistemological, and pedagogical implications. Functions play an important role in neo-pragmatism. This paper advances neo-pragmatism's prospects by investigating how functions are to be understood on this account. It argues that prominent ways of understanding functions do not suit neo-pragmatists' meta-semantic commitments or their preferred methodology. It then presents an account that fits both, based on Laura and François Schroeter's theory of rationalizing self-interpretation. In 2020 we published MetaBLIND, a large meta-epidemiological study on the impact of masking on effect estimates in randomized clinical trials (RCTs). While masking is an established methodological practice in RCTs it is not clear to what extent results of non-masked RCTs are biased. Surprisingly, we found no evidence of an impact of masking on effect estimates, on average. Michiel Tack commented on the MetaBLIND study, and here we respond. The issues he raised were examples of standard themes when interpreting meta-epidemiological studies, which we have discussed at some length elsewhere, and did not warrant change of our conclusion. The goal of science is to explain reality and the world, and the goal of philosophy is also ontology. Philosophical views on scientific opinions and scientific opinions have had a direct influence on the way of worldview and ontology. Since the early twentieth century, the scientific flow of reduction affects logic and philosophy, psychology and sociology, and even theology and religion. On the other hand, the new emergent flow of emergentism in opposition to reductionism flourished in the late twentieth century. The philosophical and analytical validation of these two seemingly contradictory views promotes the levels of scientific methods and approaches, as well as philosophical views, especially philosophies such as the philosophy of religion, the philosophy of psychology, and the philosophy of sociology. Reductionism is trying to coordinate with unity, realize the unity of sciences, eliminate the waste of scientific theories, and provide the possibility of a stronger justification. On the other hand, emergentism involves the hierarchical plurality of the world's creatures. On the other hand, emergentism involves the hierarchical plurality of the world's creatures which causes the classification of science. Each level and class have its lows, rules, and concepts per se. Reductionism is unable to explain the plurality of facts and levels of existence; But emergentism with its theoretical framework explains both the continuum, unity and multiplicity of reality means the hierarchical plurality of reality. the reduction merely is an essential step in understanding and discovering down-up causality that is used as one of the theoretical concepts of emergentism and somewhat explains the cause of the relationship between the layers of existence. But reduction strategy is not successful in recognizing and explaining the existence of layers and classes of science. Reductions with a priority look at reality are subject to selfish judgment and preference, but in emergentism, reality and ontology determine and identify the methodology and epistemology. The purpose of this article is to present the epistemological, ontological, and methodological deliberations that emerged during the development of the doctoral research titled "Configuration of Affective Practices and Knowledge in Single-Parent Families in the City of Bogotá, Colombia." These deliberations arise from the decolonial perspective adopted in the study. They address, on one hand, the questioning of the exclusion of emotions in discourses anchored in this perspective, and on the other hand, the subalternization of a single population group, and the fragmentation of being maintained by some decolonial understandings deriving from it. These deliberations drive a methodological proposal to decolonize social research. This proposal connects some epistemological interpretations of decoloniality with certain ontological and methodological notions offered by complexity, resulting in four guiding axes for research action. This critical reflection essay responds to John Mollenkopf's review of the book "Contested Concepts in Migration Studies" (Routledge 2022). Rather than take a comprehensive overview of individual chapters within the edited collection, this essay suggests that occupying an ontological and epistemological perspective that is rooted in and starting from Asia produces alternative understandings of concepts typically used to study international migration and mobility. It calls attention to demographic, historical and temporal structures that characterize the region and argues that to fully interrogate the contested nature of key conceptions used to study contemporary migration, it is imperative to take Asian migrations as both an empirical site of inquiry, as well as a basis for the formation of theory and ideas. In doing so, it may lead to the productive questioning and rethinking of established notions that have long been taken-for-granted in centres of knowledge production in Europe and North America. Calls for the decolonization of education at all levels of education in the UK have gained new momentum since the murder of George Floyd on 25 May 2020 in Minneapolis and the subsequent Black Lives Matter demonstrations throughout the US and the UK. In this article I focus on the reactions to demands for the decolonization of the curriculum in my own department, Social Policy, at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). I argue that understanding the reactions of academic staff to student demands is informative about the nature of the problem. The article provides a contribution to discussions on decolonization on two fronts: (a) it highlights the internal dynamics of engagement with student demands in the context of a Higher Education Institution (HEI) and (b) the academic responses to students' demands reveal an underlying mechanism that reproduces the status quo in the teaching of Social Policy. Reflexivity has traditionally been considered as a highly useful methodological tool in qualitative research in social sciences, especially in fieldwork. Nonetheless, we defend the relevance of transcending this perspective by positioning reflexivity as a transversal practice. Understood as such, reflexivity facilitates the grasping and appropriation of the hermeneutic situations of those who participate in the relational dynamics of an investigation. It entails critical observation and the transformation of power relationships allowing the embodiment of a situated knowledge with concrete implications as to the knowledge generation. Hence, this article will present the ontological and epistemological considerations of this approach. While scientific knowledge has become valuable in creating national and global policies, the influence of Public Administration knowledge may be perceived as limited and thus not meaningful. This study aimed to understand the epistemological and methodological antecedents for meaningful knowledge about public administration. It departed from two assumptions, namely that of a social ontology of a complex, emerging and socially constructed public administration reality, and that of the co-situatedness of scholars, administrators, politicians and citizens in the public administration reality. The current study has shown that a situated knowledge quest for this reality implies, firstly, an extended epistemology to recognize and consider all forms of tangible and non-tangible knowledge about public administration within relevant contexts. Secondly, it implies an interscience methodology drawing from multi- and transdisciplinary traditions for comprehensive knowledge about public administration within relevant contexts. This study enters the ‘kitchens of science’ or the ‘backrooms’ of international development agencies to examine the methods used to develop global COVID-19 response frameworks for education. These global frameworks need to be scrutinized as they are used to guide the development of national COVID-19 response frameworks for education. Drawing upon the theory of change, the study examines how the interventions embedded in these global frameworks are produced. The results show methodological flaws and epistemic violence in the production process of these global frameworks. This paper introduces the contributions of Alan Sugarman (US), Rachel Blass (Israel), Paul Denis (France), Luisa Perez (Uruguay), Bernard Reith (Switzerland) and David Tuckett (UK) to a debate on the question of how we can enable productive discussion about our scientific differences and why historically it has been so difficult for the discipline of psychoanalysis to initiate and sustain such discussions. By way of introduction the historical example of the Controversial Discussions in the British Psychoanalytic Society is briefly reviewed and several possible factors contributing to the difficulties are provisionally identified, including over-reliance on authority and tradition, eagerness to supervise on the basis of our own theoretical models rather than trying to understand those of others, the lack of clarity and consensus in our definitions of terms, a lack of mutual curiosity resulting in theoretical silos, an experienced threat to identity when adjustments to our positions are called for, and the lack of a methodology for undesrstanding and / or resolving differences. This article aims to think and propose, epistemically and methodologically, a sociology of capturing attention in the light of current sociotechnical phenomena, taking some examples from the Covid-19 pandemic in the West. Considering attention as a resource of the economy triggered by informational and vigilance capitalism, it is suggested to study the capture of visual attention in general, and the capture of manipulable attention in particular, as an area of extreme relevance in contemporary sociology. This article addresses Husserl's attempt to differentiate between transcendental phenomenology and eidetic psychology. The thesis is: The distinction remained problematic so that Husserl's analyses are often valuable contributions to psychology that, however, aremistaken to be epistemology. It is shown how and why the confusion of epistemological and psychological investigations harbors the danger of a psychologism. The article shows how becoming conscious of consciousness leads to a kind of reduplication of the world and why this led Husserl to give psychology an epistemological priority. On the other hand, it considers where and how the concern of epistemology and psychological investigations on the genesis of consciousness can bemethodologically separated. The objective of this paper is to look for evidence of the attribution of meaning to mathematical objects through the signs associated with doing mathematical modeling. To do so, we analyzed two mathematical modeling activities developed in the early years of Elementary School, with the theoretical contribution of Mathematical Modeling, with attention to children's cognitive actions and Peircean semiotics, with regard to signs and the epistemological triangle, which considers them in association with two other elements: the context of reference and its concept. The qualitative methodology is the one that supports this study since we focus on the signs produced by the children, for mathematical objects, when they develop mathematical modeling activities. We interpret them from the epistemological triangles we build. From these triangles, we consider that the attribution of meaning to mathematical objects emerging in mathematical modeling activities developed is imbricated with the situation that originated the activity, signaling that such attribution is a compound that considers the situation and mathematics in an articulated way. Furthermore, attributing meaning to mathematical objects gains consistency as the signs change, alter, and complement each other in the face of children's cognitive actions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article aims to identify and understand how the teacher’s knowledge impacts their practice regarding the content of geometric transformations. To this end, we analyzed qualitatively, in June 2019, a class episode in which such content was taught to an 8th-grade class at an elementary municipal school in the city of São Paulo. To this end, we used the Knowledge Quartet (KQ) tool as the main theoretical and methodological reference. We raised and categorized 21 critical events, and discussed five of them. The analysis showed a convergence between theoretical research and the practice of the teacher who teaches the content of geometric transformations, and indicated gaps in teaching knowledge and the use of closed exercises with reduced challenges for teaching the content. The KQ proved to be an appropriate tool for such analysis, to highlight such aspects so that both the initial and continuing teacher education can be structured according to the demands observed in practice. In this epilogue we connect contemporary discussion concerning Southern epistemologies and methodologies in language studies with decolonizing Higher Education. This means that we cannot divorce Southern epistemologies from the regimes of truth that guide the modes of production, dissemination and appropriation of knowledge in the global world, which also includes the discussion concerning ethics and positionality in research. We argue that this discussion should be radically embedded in a broader political and economic context, by considering the role of neoliberalism in shaping contemporary universities. Since the early days of humankind, people have been asking questions about Nature of two kinds: why did that happen? And how can that be used? In a broad sense, science was born that day. We show indeed that science has two complementary and interdependent souls that aim, respectively, to how to understand and how to control Nature. Through a broad historical analysis, this essay aims to (1) give an account of the development of science as an oscillation and an interplay between its two intrinsic natures, (2) demonstrate that this happened already in ancient times starting from the 6th century BC, and (3) the fact that in different periods one of the two natures was largely favored over the other is a consequence of science being a cultural product of the different social-historical contexts. At this moment, humanity is confronting several global metacrises that demand a new image of science to deal with the complex problems associated with these crises. In addition to natural sciences and humanities, social sciences can become an equally efficient resource for use in this transformation if they succeed in constructing new frameworks congruent with the new reality. The purpose of this theoretical paper in the discourse of philosophy of science is to discern the features of the social sciences within a new paradigm of metamodernism. For the first time, the authors elaborate on the new principles of metamodernist philosophy and apply them to the ontology, epistemology, axiology, and methodology of the social sciences. The set of six transversal principles comprises the ontological principle of paradoxical simultaneity, caused by oscillation, epistemological principles of paradoxical understanding of truth and grand narratives, as well as metaxis-based thinking and dia/polylogue, axiological negotiation between rhizomatic and hierarchical social relations and values, and methodological pluralism. The last principle showcases the coexistence and interlinkage of previous stages of metamodernism. The application of these principles to the social sciences was designed from the perspectives of a specific discipline, inter/transdisciplinarity, and instrumental level of social practice. The article presents a critical review and reactualization of the results of earlier comparative studies of competing paradigms in social and behavioral sciences and metatheories in marketing research. The results of comparative studies of different paradigms in social and behavioral sciences show a predominant coincidence of paradigmatic dispositions of positivism and postpositivism in many issues of ontology, epistemology, methodology, ethics, and axiology. At the same time, postpositivism is more adaptive under the conditions of paradigmatic competition, more open to borrowing and applying fruitful research practices of competing paradigms. In this article I seek to reflect on certain methodological aspects of ethnographic practice such as the design and application of interviews in fieldwork with deaf people. As researchers, we establish and use predominantly oral communication codes when interacting with the interviewees, taking other forms of communication for granted and without questioning the orality paradigm. This leads us to minorize and make invisible other forms of interaction, communication and participation present in everyday life and not be able to see these other forms as the people interviewed see them. Placing ourselves in the orality paradigm would be biasing the collection of information by using methodological designs and research instruments from the imposition of a hegemonic oralism on certain realities. For this reason, my objective is to show, from my own field experience with deaf people from a Nahua community in the Huasteca of Veracruz, the possibility and need to conduct adequate, pertinent, non-minorizing or excluding interviews. To do this, I analyze in an evaluative and retrospective way what was the design and application of the ethnographic interview and the adaptations and improvements that were necessary or would have been needed. Thus, firstly, I inquire about the epistemological and axiological principles that guided this ethnographic practice, to later address the technical and empirical problems that arose and expose how was the process of adaptation of the interview and what were the main challenges in its application, registration, and epistemic use. The result of this analysis offers us methodological guidelines to make the interview techniques applicable and effective to deaf people from other non-oral forms and codes of communication, which the researcher must recognize, adapt and manage him/herself, with the support of other specialists and with the collaboration of the community in order to understand the people under study on their own terms. This article explores how a diffractive methodology can enrich research on organizational space and the senses. Through the creation of interferences, a diffractive methodology directs attention to how differences in sensing are created in the ongoing production of space and what the effects of these are. By using examples from an ethnographic study of the Hub, a university-based entrepreneurship space designed to invoke positive "buzz", the article illustrates how a diffractive methodology allows for the exploration of the sensory design of space and how it governs the possibilities of sensing among participants. The article contributes to organizational research by demonstrating how a diffractive methodology can be utilized to explore sensing as a spatial, unstable achievement and by highlighting how differences in the possibilities of sensing can be an important analytical starting point.
