Landslides pose significant and serious geological threat disasters worldwide, threatening human lives and property; China is particularly susceptible to these disasters. This paper focuses on Pengyang County, which is situated in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region of China, an area prone to landslides. This study investigated the application of machine learning techniques for analyzing landslide susceptibility. To construct and validate the model, we initially compiled a landslide inventory comprising 972 historical landslides and an equivalent number of non-landslide sites (Data sourced from the Pengyang County Department of Natural Resources). To ensure an impartial evaluation, both the landslide and non-landslide datasets were randomly divided into two sets using a 70/30 ratio. Next, we extracted 15 landslide conditioning factors, including the slope angle, elevation, profile curvature, plan curvature, slope aspect, TWI (topographic wetness index), TPI (topographic position index), distance to roads and rivers, NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index), rainfall, land use, lithology, SPI (stream power index), and STI (sediment transport index), from the spatial database. Subsequently, a correlation analysis between the conditioning factors and landslide occurrences was conducted using the certainty factor (CF) method. Three landslide models were established by employing logistic regression (LR), functional trees (FTs), and random subspace functional trees (RSFTs) algorithms. The landslide susceptibility map was categorized into five levels: very low, low, medium, high, and very high susceptibility. Finally, the predictive capability of the three algorithms was assessed using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). The better the prediction, the higher the AUC value. The results indicate that all three models are predictive and practical, with only minor discrepancies in accuracy. The integrated model (RSFT) displayed the highest predictive performance, achieving an AUC value of 0.844 for the training dataset and 0.837 for the validation dataset. This was followed by the LR model (0.811 for the training dataset and 0.814 for the validation dataset) and the FT model (0.776 for the training dataset and 0.760 for the validation dataset). The proposed methods and resulting landslide susceptibility map can assist researchers and local authorities in making informed decisions for future geohazard prevention and mitigation. The aim of this research is to investigate multi-criteria decision making [spatial multi-criteria evaluation (SMCE)], bivariate statistical methods [frequency ratio (FR), index of entropy (IOE), weighted linear combination (WLC)] and machine learning [support vector machine (SVM)] models for estimating landslide susceptibility at the Wuning area, China. A total of 445 landslides were randomly classified into 70% (311 landslides) and 30% (134 landslides) to train and validate landslide models, respectively. Fourteen landslide conditioning factors including slope angle, slope aspect, altitude, topographic wetness index, stream power index, sediment transport index, soil, lithology, NDVI, land use, rainfall, distance to road, distance to river and distance to fault were then studied for landslide susceptibility assessment. Performances of five studied models were evaluated using area under the ROC curve (AUROC) for training (success rate curve) and validation (prediction rate curve) datasets, statistical-based measures and tests. Results indicated that the area under the success rate curve for the FR, IOE, WLC, SVM and SMCE models was 88.32%, 82.58%, 78.91%, 85.47% and 89.96%, respectively, demonstrating that SMCE could provide the higher accuracy. The prediction capability findings revealed that the SMCE model (AUC = 86.81%) was also the highest approach among the five studied models, followed by the FR (AUC = 84.53%), the SVM (AUC = 81.24%), the IOE (AUC = 79.67%) and WLC (73.92%) methods. Abstract The main objective of the present study was to produce a novel ensemble data mining technique that involves an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) optimized by Shuffled Frog Leaping Algorithm (SFLA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) for spatial modeling of landslide susceptibility. Step-wise Assessment Ratio Analysis (SWARA) was utilized for the evaluation of the relation between landslides and landslide-related factors providing ANFIS with the necessary weighting values. The developed methods were applied in Langao County, Shaanxi Province, China. Eighteen factors were selected based on the experience gained from studying landslide phenomena, the local geo-environmental conditions as well as the availability of data, namely; elevation, slope aspect, slope angle, profile curvature, plan curvature, sediment transport index, stream power index, topographic wetness index, land use, normalized difference vegetation index, rainfall, lithology, distance to faults, fault density, distance to roads, road density, distance to rivers and river density. A total of 288 landslides were identified after analyzing previous technical surveys, airborne imagery and conducting field surveys. Also, 288 non-landslide areas were identified with the usage of Google Earth imagery and the analysis of a digital elevation model. The two datasets were merged and later divided into two subsets, training and testing, based on a random selection scheme. The produced landslide susceptibility maps were evaluated by the receiving operating characteristic and the area under the success and predictive rate curves (AUC). The results showed that AUC based on the training and testing dataset was similar and equal to 0.89. However, the processing time during the training and implementation phase was considerable different. SWARA-ANFIS-PSO appeared six times faster in respect to the processing time achieved by SWARA-ANFIS-SFLA. The proposed novel approach, which combines expert knowledge, neuro-fuzzy inference systems and evolutionary algorithms, can be applied for land use planning and spatial modeling of landslide susceptibility. In this study, hybrid integration of MultiBoosting based on two artificial intelligence methods (the radial basis function network (RBFN) and credal decision tree (CDT) models) and geographic information systems (GIS) were used to establish landslide susceptibility maps, which were used to evaluate landslide susceptibility in Nanchuan County, China. First, the landslide inventory map was generated based on previous research results combined with GIS and aerial photos. Then, 298 landslides were identified, and the established dataset was divided into a training dataset (70%, 209 landslides) and a validation dataset (30%, 89 landslides) with ensured randomness, fairness, and symmetry of data segmentation. Sixteen landslide conditioning factors (altitude, profile curvature, plan curvature, slope aspect, slope angle, stream power index (SPI), topographical wetness index (TWI), sediment transport index (STI), distance to rivers, distance to roads, distance to faults, rainfall, NDVI, soil, land use, and lithology) were identified in the study area. Subsequently, the CDT, RBFN, and their ensembles with MultiBoosting (MCDT and MRBFN) were used in ArcGIS to generate the landslide susceptibility maps. The performances of the four landslide susceptibility maps were compared and verified based on the area under the curve (AUC).
