Abstract

Variability in Florida phosphate feed to the flotation plant can result in a 10-50% decrease in P2O5 recovery and/or a reduction in P2O5 concentrate grade. Samples of refractory and easily floatable ore from the same mining area in central Florida were characterised and submitted to bench flotation tests using fatty acids. It was found that the fatty acid surface coverage for the refractory ore was between 6.9 and 9.8%, corresponding respectively to 0 and 80% recovery; whereas the easy-to- float ore showed surface coverage of 17.2% (89% recovery) to 24.6% (98% recovery). As there was little difference in size, surface area or pore size, it was thought that the differences could be caused by the adsorption of natural compounds. SEM, EDS and leaching/solvent extraction studies were used to demonstrate the mechanism and to identify the compound, so that a new surface modifier could be designed to neutralise the detrimental effect., Variability in Florida phosphate feed to the flotation plant can result in a 10-50% decrease in P2O5 recovery and/or a reduction in P2O5 concentrate grade.
