Abstract

The Mediterranean fin whale emits two types of 20-Hz calls, known as "classic" and "backbeat", that can be produced in irregular series or in patterned sequences called songs. The analysis of songs is recognized as a meaningful approach to study baleen whales and can be used to investigate populations' identities. Mediterranean fin whale songs have been studied previously, but only in the western Mediterranean Sea. This work describes the structure of the songs recorded in the Ionian Sea. The inter-note intervals and the alternation of 20-Hz note types were considered to assess the occurrence of recurring patterns. Differences between patterned songs and irregular sequences were also investigated. Acoustic data were sampled continuously for about 10 months by the cabled observatory NEMO-SN1, deployed at 2100 m depth, 25 km offshore Catania; 28 call sequences were isolated and 10 of these were classified as either patterned songs or irregular sequences. Significant differences were observed in the spectral features of classic notes between songs and irregulars; four-note patterns were found repeatedly over different months, indicating a regular structure in detected songs. 8. Economic Assessment of Dolphin Depredation Damages and Pinger Use in Artisanal Fisheries in the Archipelago of Egadi Islands (Sicily)

Abstract

In this study, an economic analysis of the effect of pingers as "anti-depredation" devices on artisanal fisheries and dolphin depredation was performed. By comparing the data of the gross Profit Per Unit Effort (PPUE) over 29 fishing days for two identical nets (900-m long, one was equipped with pingers, and the other did not have pingers), was assessed the following: the different production trends of the nets (Advantage of Production, AP) and the Return Of Investment (ROI) for the purchase of the pingers. Considering the difference in the PPUE values of the two nets, the frequency of the dolphin interaction, and the effort of fishing activities, was assessed the one-year economic losses (ED) due to dolphin depredation. Moreover, was assessed the economic damage caused by the destroyed area of the nets. The AP over 29 fishing days for the use of the pinger net with respect to the control net is 25.7 Euros for each 50 m of net. The ROI for the initial investment of the pingers (4 pinger = 800 Euro) is 50 fishing days, and the ED is 1400 Euros. The damages suffered by the control and the pinger nets were 33 m2 (90 Euros) and 22 m2 (91 Euros), respectively. The analysis of the results demonstrates that the critical factors that determine the success of the pinger technology could be represented by the return of investment (ROI) and the use of the economic incentives provided by the European Fisheries Fund (EFF).

Abstract

This study evaluated the ambient noise effect of onshore and offshore aquaculture systems on oxidative status and on some immune parameters in gilthead sea bream ( Sparus aurata) juveniles. The experiment was performed for 40 days, projecting two different playlists of acoustic stimuli: offshore aquaculture noise condition that created the typical acoustic field in proximity of an offshore sea cage for fish farming, using a random sequence of quite sea background and boat noises; and onshore aquaculture noise condition that represented the acoustic field inside an open concrete tank for fish farming. A third group without any acoustic projection was used as a control. After 40 days from the beginning of acoustic noise, fish exposed to the offshore aquaculture condition showed significantly higher levels of total oxidant status, lysozyme activity, antiprotease activity and white blood cells together with a lower albumin/globulin ratio in comparison to fish from the control group; whereas fish exposed to the onshore condition showed analytical data placed between the other groups, though never significantly different. These results demonstrate that the offshore aquaculture noise, and in particular the sea soundscape, adversely influences the oxidative status and the immune function of gilthead sea bream determining a mild stress condition that could affect the sea bream welfare. Abstract

This study examined the effects of an acoustic stimulus on the haemolymph and agonistic behaviour of the red swamp crayfish, Procambarus clarkii. The experiment was conducted in a tank equipped with a video recording system using six groups (three control and three test groups) of five adult crayfish (30 specimens in total). After 1 h of habituation, the behaviour of the crayfish was monitored for 2h. During the second hour, the animals in the test groups were exposed to a linear sweep (frequency range 0.1-25kHz; peak amplitude l48dBrmsre. 1 μPa at 12kHz) acoustic stimulus for 30mm. Exposure to the noise produced significant variations in haemato-immunological parameters as well as a reduction in agonistic behaviour.
