Disposable surgical gowns are usually made from petroleum-based synthetic fibers that do not naturally decompose, impacting the environment. A promising approach to diminish the environmental impact of disposable gowns involves utilizing natural fibers and/or bio-based synthetic fibers. In this study, composite webs from polylactic acid (PLA) bicomponent fiber and natural fibers, cattail and kapok fibers, were prepared using the hot press method. Only the sheath region of the PLA bicomponent fiber melted, acting as an adhesive that enhanced the strength and reduced the thickness of the composite web compared with its state before hot pressing. The mechanical and physical properties of these composite webs were evaluated. Composite webs created from kapok fibers displayed a creamy yellowish-white color, while those made from cattail fibers showed a light yellowish-brown color. Additionally, the addition of natural fibers endowed the composite webs with hydrophobic properties. The maximum natural fiber content, at a ratio of 30:70 (natural fiber to PLA fiber), can be incorporated while maintaining proper water vapor permeability and mechanical properties. The fiber-filled polymer composite is one of the best materials which provides a symmetrical superior strength and stiffness to structures. With the strengthening of people's environmental protection and resource reuse consciousness, the development of renewable materials, especially natural fiber-filled polymer composites, is receiving great attention. This study investigated the mechanical properties of polymer composites incorporating waste materials from the food processing industry and agricultural sources. Waste vegetal fiber-filled polymer biocomposites (WVFFPBs) with varying fiber types and 3D printing orientations were systematically fabricated. Subsequently, the tensile tests were executed to comprehensively assess the anisotropic mechanical behaviors of the WVFFPBs. The results demonstrated that WVFFPBs performed excellent anisotropic mechanical properties compared to pristine matrix samples as print orientation changed. As the printing angle increased from 0° to 90°, the tensile mechanical properties of the WVFFPBs displayed a decreasing trend. Moreover, the print orientation–anisotropic mechanical behavior relationship of 3D-printed WVFFPBs was revealed through the analysis of the material manufacturing characteristics and damage features. In this study, we utilized a hybridization approach for two different fibers to overcome the drawbacks of single-fiber-reinforced PLA composites. Coir fiber and bamboo leaf fiber were used as reinforcing natural fibers as their properties complement one another. Additionally, we combined thermal annealing with hybridization techniques to further improve the overall properties of the composites. The results showed that the hybridization of BF: CF with a ratio of 1:2 gave PLA-based hybrid composites optimal mechanical and thermal properties. Furthermore, the improvement in the thermal stability of hybrid composites, attributable to an increase in crystallinity, was a result of thermal annealing. The improvement in HDT in annealed 1BF:2CF hybrid composite was about 13.76% higher than that of the neat PLA. Annealing of the composites led to increased crystallinity, which was confirmed using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The synergistic effect of hybridization and annealing, leading to the improvement in the thermal properties, opened up the possibilities for the use of PLA-based composites. In this study, we demonstrated that a combined technique can be utilized as a strategy for improving the properties of 100% biocomposites and help overcome some limitations of the use of PLA in many applications. Bioderived poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is a promising alternative for fossilbased polymers, but its poor hydrophilicity, high brittleness, and low heatresistance are problems for its utilization. In this work, bleached softwood kraft pulp (BSKP) fiber was adopted to modify PLA with MAPP as the coupling agent, with BSKP accounting for 10 wt% to 50 wt%. Internal mixing (IM) was applied to mix the PLA/fiber blend instead of screw grinding. The thermal and mechanical properties of the composites were assessed. The IM process was proven qualified for its effective dispersion of BSKP fibers in the PLA matrix. At a fiber loading of 50 wt%, IMprocessed composites acquired satisfactory tensile strength (50.49 MPa, slightly higher than PLA) and Young's modulus (2.56 GPa, 45.8% higher than PLA). The pulp fillers matched PLA matrix well for the characteristic temperatures in thermal decomposition. The BSKP/PLA composites were thermally strengthened by pulp fibers characterized by higher content of residues. The fibers improved the interfacial crystallinity of PLA in the composites (i.e., from 5.22% to 11.86%). The increased crystallinity resulted in enhanced stiffness or weaker damping performance of the composites. A new class of biobased composites with tailorable mechanical properties made of natural fibers, polylactic acid, and ferulic acid derivatives (FAD) is studied. FAD was used to develop composites with elastomeric properties like improved elongation at break and highly reversible deformation upon elongation. Composites were prepared using raw and enzymatically treated hemp fibers. The fibers were defibrillated due to the enzymatic treatment increasing their aspect ratio. The composites were characterized by their mechanical properties and their reaction to fire. No significant change in the dispersion of the fibers in the composites was reported. Homogenously dispersed crystallites of FAD were observed by scanning electron microscopy in the PLA matrix and at the interface between the PLA and the fibers, where they are suspected to increase the free volume in correlation with a decrease in mechanical properties following the increase in the aspect ratio of the fibers. FAD also degraded the reaction to fire of the material with an increase in 10% of the peak of Heat Release Rate (pHRR) in comparison to neat PLA. It also increased the charring residue up to 3 wt.%. The usage of new cellulosic fibers in industrial applications is massive because of its excellent performances. These fibers are utilized especially for manufacture of high-performance composites. Coconut leaf sheath (CLS) fibers are extracted for leaf sheath of coconut tree. The aim of this paper is to study the possibility of using a natural fiber CLS as an alternative for polymer composites. In the current study, the consequence of NaOH treatment on structural, thermal and morphological behavior of treated and untreated coconut leaf sheath (CLS) fiber in terms of single fiber tensile strength, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (×RD), ther)mogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) has been explored. From SEM analysis, it was identified globular lumps spread consistently over the fiber which could help the mechanical interlock with the resin. The outcomes from the experimentation exposed that the NaOH treatment has impacted in the eradication of amorphous hemicellulose and lignin contents from the CLS fiber surface and in turn resulted in excellent structural and thermal stability behaviour of fiber. The present work endorses the great potential of CLS fibers to be utilized for bio-reinforcement in order to fabricate lightweight composite structures, employed in automobile and structural applications. A series of eco-friendly biocomposites with improved mechanical properties and interfacial interaction were prepared by melt-mixing natural fibers using a cellulose acetate derivative as a polymer matrix and used to evaluate their mechanical, thermal, and morphological properties. The natural fiber used as a biofiller was pre-surface-treated by a refining process using alkali and natural enzymes to improve compatibility and increase interfacial bonding with biopolymer substrate. To increase the processability of the cellulose material, the raw material was plasticized and the composition prepared in the form of pellets in a twin-screw extruder by mixing with an additive before being molded through an injection process. For each composition, the interfacial bonding force between different materials was confirmed through morphology analysis and evaluation of mechanical and thermal properties. When biofillers and a viscosity modifier were used at the same time, the fabricated biocomposites had controllable crystallinity, stiffness, and elasticity and showed improved mechanical strength, such as tensile strength and flexural strength. These results indicated that interfacial properties could be increased through interfacial interactions between two different components due to appropriate surface treatment. In addition, it was confirmed that a composition having interfacial interaction, not a simple mixture, could be prepared by lowering both glass transition and melting temperature. The lowering of glass transition temperature increased the elasticity of the biocomposites, which have the potential advantage of easier melt processing when applied to various injection parts. In engineering applications, natural fiber composites must comply with fire requirements including the use of flame retardant. Furthermore, biocomposites are known to be water sensitive. Whether flame retardants affect the water sensitivity and whether water absorption affects the fire behavior and the mechanical performance of biocomposites are the two main topics addressed in this work. In this study, a flax fiber/epoxy composite flame retardant with 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO) or aluminum diethyl phosphinate (AlPi) was aged in humid atmosphere or by immersion in water. Water absorption kinetics revealed that DOPO induces an increase in equilibrium water content by approximately a factor of 2 due to its intrinsic hygroscopicity and/or its plasticizing effect on the epoxy matrix. In contrast, AlPi does not significantly change the water sensitivity of the biocomposite. Mechanical testing highlighted that, whatever the FR, the evolution of mechanical properties with ageing is governed by the moisture content. The drop of elastic modulus was attributed to a decrease in fiber rigidity due to plasticization, while the increase in tensile strength was assigned to an increase in fiber/matrix friction due to fiber swelling. As regards flame retardancy, only the highest water contents modified the fire behavior. For the AlPi containing biocomposite, the water release resulted in an increase by 50% of the time to ignition, while for the DOPO flame retardant biocomposite the water release was mainly postponed after ignition. Natural fibre biopolymer composites with both fibres and matrix being derived from biomaterials are increasingly used in demanding applications, such as sensing, packaging, building, and transport, and require good electrical, thermal, and flame retardant properties. Herein, an investigation of the effectiveness of functionalising nonwoven cotton/poly(lactic acid) (PLA) fibre mats with graphene oxide nanosheets has been reported by using a facile dip-coating method followed by thermal reduction for enhancing the electric, thermal, and abrasion-resistance properties. The manufacturing processes for preparing biocomposites and introducing functionality are readily scalable. Experimental results reveal that with the addition of less than 0.5 wt% graphene nanoplatelets, the biocomposites showed significant improvements in abrasion resistance, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and diffusivity. Paunch is a fibrous solid residue consisting of partially digested feed from the stomachs of processed cattle. It is the largest untapped solid waste stream from animals at meat processing plants, and potentially a valuable source of fibres for the production of sustainable and potentially higher-value natural biocomposite materials. Paunch was obtained from the waste effluent of a red meat processing plant, and the fibre characteristics of the as-obtained material were studied and benchmarked against wood flour and ground buffel grass, with a view to evaluating the potential of paunch as a fibre for polymer composites. The ground paunch possessed a rough fibrous surface and fibre-like characteristics that were comparable to both wood flour and ground buffel grass, demonstrating their potential for use in composites. Without any pre-treatment or compatibilisation, composites of a representative biopolymer, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) and ground paunch were successfully produced for the first time via extrusion, with up to 50 wt% paunch content. Mechanical property analysis showed that, at 30 wt% content, PHBV/ground paunch composites yielded mechanical properties that were comparable to those of composites with ground buffel grass. In recent decades, the focus on the green composite speedily increases because they are low toxic, cheap, and available. A combination of naturally sourced polymetric polymer, suitable filler and excellent wettability and good filler/matrix interaction, synthesized with advance method and techniques appropriate to develop biocomposite with improved properties for different applications in marine, railway, construction and automobile industries. Although several naturally sourced material has been combined to achieve this aim, they're much agricultural waste that is underutilized. This review provides information about various classes of natural fibers, nanofiller, based composite, nanocomposite, and natural fiber/nanofiller-based hybrid composite with specific concern to their applications. It also provides a summary of the emerging new aspects of milling techniques for synthesizing CaCO3 from snail shells and its application for developing hybrid composites for the sustainable and greener environment. Mechanical properties of Roselle fiber reinforced vinyl ester biocomposite were studied based on the fiber content and length in the present communication. Usually, natural fiber reinforced polymer composites depend on some aspects such as fiber content, fiber length and orientation, the fiber-matrix adhesion. Composite plates were prepared by a simple hand lay-up technique for two different fiber lengths (3 and 13 mm) and five different fiber content (10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 wt%). Composite specimens were tested according to ASTM and ISO standards and their results were recorded. Experimental results showed that mechanical properties such as tensile, flexural and impact, increases with increase of fiber content up to 40 wt% after which it is decreases at both the fiber length. However, modulus values were increased linearly with fiber content of 10 to 50 wt%. Composites with the fiber length of 13 mm show the high level of mechanical properties compared to composites with the fiber length of 3 mm at all combinations of fiber contents. It is observed that the optimal fiber content is 40 wt%, which can be used to obtain the maximum property level in the Roselle fiber reinforced vinyl ester composites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The agricultural industry is one of the main economic contributors in developing countries, especially in tropical regions. Extensive land clearing has led to severe erosion within the watersheds, which increases the vulnerability of water catchments to natural disasters, such as floods. Cellulosic fibers, such as jute, sisal, kenaf, hemp, and coir, are gaining increasing worldwide attention for their potential application in controlling soil erosion, principally due to their remarkable biodegradable and physical properties. Nonetheless, the research on biocomposites in controlling soil erosion is limited compared to the natural fibers. This is perhaps due to poor availability and high cost of biodegradable polymers compared to natural fibers, which are abundant and inexpensive. Poor adhesive interactions between the matrix and natural fibers due to the hydrophilic characteristic of the fibers is another major drawback that limits the development of biocomposites for controlling soil erosion. Abstract Biocomposites are promising materials for traditional composites replacement in specific applications due to their interesting properties and sustainability. Although the composite components are manufactured near net shape, some machining operations, commonly drilling, are commonly required prior to mechanical joining of the components. Tool geometry, mainly the point angle of the drill, strongly affects the performance of the drilling process of composites in terms of machining induced damage. The aim of this work is analyzing the influence of the point angle of the drill on the damage generated during drilling of 100% biodegradable composite, using both numerical and experimental approaches. The novelty of the work relies on the lack of studies of drilling 100% biodegradable composites. [Display omitted] Plastic pollution has become a global threat to humanity. Fortunately, humanity has always found ways of overcoming such threats through multipronged approaches. To overcome this current threat brought about by anthropogenic linear pattern of take-make-use-dispose of fossil-based plastics, an intentional approach of adopting biobased plastics which are renewable has taken shape. In this approach, governments, industry, and academia are at the forefront of making determined commitments to slow down the spiralling carbon footprint and aim at net zero carbon emissions by 2050. In this regard, PHAs which have a rich resume of desired properties to replace non-renewable fossil-based plastics are increasingly becoming popular. However, PHA production cost is still high compared with the fossil-based plastics and there exists properties performance gap because they are typically brittle, especially the short chain length PHAs (Scl-PHAs). Considerable efforts are geared towards tuning the mechanical properties as well as reducing the cost to meet the market requirements. The most authentic way of tackling these twin-challenges of reducing the cost of PHA products and their properties enhancement is the incorporation of fillers sourced from renewable sources, especially the plant biomass. In this comprehensive review, Scl-PHAs biopolymers are discussed, their modifications with plant biomass (natural fibres and components, agro-residues, and industrial residues) are elucidated. Moreover, their wide scope of applications, sustainability performance (biodegradation studies) and other viable end-of-life options are amply discussed. In this paper, analytical and 3D numerical models are developed to investigate the mechanical behavior of sandwich pipe under internal pressure loading. The suggested models provide an exact solution for stresses, strains and displacement on the sandwich pipe, which is made of epoxy material for the core layer and reinforced materials with an alternate-ply for the skin layers. The aim of this analysis is to evaluate the potential applications of jute and pineapple leaf fiber (PALF) bio-fibers in order to replace glass synthetic fibers generally employed in sandwich pipes. In this subject, a failure analytical analysis was developed using TSAI-WU criterion. The results of stress, strain and displacement distribution through the thickness are presented for the analytical and numerical models. The comparison between the both models results show a very good agreement. In order to increase the rigidity of a biocomposite sandwich and reduce the gap compared with a synthetic sandwich, a gradual reinforcing of layer numbers was chosen, which permitted the best behavior. The purpose of this article is to understand the influence of typical composite parameters (interfacial bond strength, surface-area and fibre mechanical properties) on the tensile properties of nonwoven composite materials. The materials investigated were flax, hemp and Poly-(propylene) (PP) and Maleic Anhydride-grafted PP (MAPP), which provide different configurations in terms of fibre mechanical properties, bundle individualization and fibre/matrix interface. Whereas hemp fibres exhibit poorer tensile properties and lower bundle individualization than flax fibres, their higher lignin content evaluated by FT-IR analysis improves the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) with PP and MAPP. However, the tight interface developed with hemp fibres has only a weak effect at the scale of composites. With low-IFSS systems such as plant fibres associated with polyolefin matrices, mechanical properties at the macroscale are governed by the fibre mechanical properties and bonding area rather than by the interfacial bond strength. The aim of this study is to propose and explore a novel approach for the production of cellular lightweight natural fibre, nonwoven, fabric-reinforced biocomposites by means of gas dissolution foaming from composite precursors of polyhydroxybutyrate-based matrix and flax fabric reinforcement. The main challenge is the development of a regular cellular structure in the polymeric matrix to reach a weight reduction while keeping a good fibre-matrix stress transfer and adhesion. The viability of the process is evaluated through the analysis of the cellular structure and morphology of the composites. The effect of matrix modification, nonwoven treatment, expansion temperature, and expansion pressure on the density and cellular structure of the cellular composites is evaluated. It was found that the nonwoven fabric plays a key role in the formation of a uniform cellular morphology, although limiting the maximum expansion ratio of the composites. This work deals with fibrous biocomposites prepared by using nettle and poly(lactic acid) fibers and employing carding and compression-molding processes. The role of carding process in determining the tensile strength of the biocomposites was analyzed. The tensile, bending and impact properties of the biocomposites were found to increase initially with the increase of nettle fiber content till 50 wt% and decrease afterwards. The thermogravimetric analysis inferred that the thermal stability of the biocomposites increased with the increase of nettle fiber content. The dynamic mechanical analysis showed that the biocomposites exhibited high storage modulus, low loss modulus, and low damping factor. Further, the biocomposites exhibited excellent biodegradability and their biodegradability increased with the increase of nettle fiber content. Overall, the biocomposite prepared with equal weight proportion of nettle and poly(lactic acid) showed high potential for automotive dashboard panel application. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Natural fibers are not as rigid as glass or carbon fibers. During composites extrusion and injection molding, they tend to bend and twist in the polymeric matrix, thus resulting in fiber waviness and decreased mechanical properties of natural fiber composites. The most widely used models for the estimation of interfacial shear strength (IFSS) and elastic modulus, which consider the fiber aspect ratio and mechanical properties of the fiber and matrix, do not consider these important features. In order to account for fiber waviness, an effective fiber length is proposed in this paper. The undulation of the fibers is approximated with a sinusoidal arc along with a calculated new length. The proposed correction factor depends on the wavelength and amplitude of the wave approximating the fiber. To verify this method, blends of polylactic acid (PLA) and polycarbonate (PC) (prepared with and without an interchange reactions catalyst) with addition to various percentages of cellulosic fibers (5 wt%, 10 wt% and 15 wt%) have been prepared and characterized. It has been demonstrated that by considering the corrected length values, it is possible to predict the mechanical properties and the effective reinforcement attained in the composites by using the most widely used models. In particular, the prediction of the elastic modulus is slightly affected by this correction, whereas the calculation of IFSS is strongly dependent on it. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A study of the impact behaviour and the post-impact residual strength of fully biodegradable composites is presented in this work. To this end, low-velocity impact tests and compressive residual strength tests were carried out on flax/PLA laminates. The results were compared with carbon/epoxy laminates, showing some important advantages in terms of absorbed energy and normalized residual strength. The reason was attributed to different energy absorption mechanisms; the main failure mode in flax/PLA laminates is fibre failure while residual strength of carbon/epoxy laminates is dominated by delaminations. Composite materials based on renewable agricultural and biomass feedstocks are increasingly utilized as these products significantly offset the use of fossil fuels and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in comparison with conventional petroleum-based materials. However, the inclusion of natural fibers in polymers introduces several challenges, such as excess water absorption and poor thermal properties, which need to be overcome to produce materials with comparable properties to the conventional composite materials. Instead of using rather expensive chemical and physical modification methods to eliminate these aforementioned challenges, a new trend of utilizing waste, residues, and process by-products in natural fiber-polymer composites (NFPCs) as additives or reinforcements may bring considerable enhancements in the properties of NFPCs in a sustainable and resilient manner. In this paper, the effects of waste materials, residues or process by-products of multiple types on NFPCs are critically reviewed and their potential as NFPC constituents is evaluated. The production of ligno-cellulosic biomass-based composites requires the development of new methodologies to evaluate the reinforcement potential of a given biomass, such as miscanthus studied in the work. Miscanthus stems from thirteen genotypes were broken into elongated fragments and mixed with polypropylene composites in an internal mixer. The aim is to find the best protocol able to discriminate miscanthus genotypes for their reinforcement capability. The following process parameters were optimized in order to maximize the reinforcement effect of the stem fragment filler: mixing parameters (mixing time, rotor speed and chamber temperature), temperature, fragment content, size and length distributions and coupling agent. The relationship between the process parameters and the mechanical properties of composites were analyzed to evaluate the influence of genotype on reinforcement performance, showing the robustness of the protocol in effectively discriminating genotypes according to their reinforcing capacity. Biodegradable fiber-reinforced biocomposites from steam-exploded coconut fibers and polylactic acid (PLA) and polybutylene succinate (PBS) plastic were developed in this study. Biocomposite filaments and samples were produced using a commercial-scale screw extruder and a 3D printer, respectively. In-depth mechanical and thermal analyses were also performed. The results showed that the tensile strengths of PLA mixed with 3% coconut fiber (PLA97/F3) and 6% coconut fiber (PLA94/F6) decreased by approximately 22% and 23%, respectively, compared to the 64% reduction of that of the original PLA after four-week storage. The bending modulus of the PLA/fiber composite was better than that of the original PLA (21–29% higher), whereas a 5–8% improvement was observed for the PLA/PBS/fiber composites. The impact strengths of PLA97/F3 and PLA77/PBS20/F3 were approximately 8.5% and 7.4% higher than those of the original PLA and PLA/PBS, respectively. During the degradation test, both PLA97/F3 and PLA77/PBS20/F3 exhibited higher tensile strengths than the original materials. Finally, this research presents encouraging results for the production of biodegradable fiber-reinforced biocomposites that are applicable to 3D printing platforms. The clean and sustainable development of biomass resources has attracted tremendous attention to alleviate the increasingly serious energy depletion and environmental problems. Hence, it is urgently needed to design a green product through a cleaner production strategy to bridge the gap between materials and sustainability toward environmental protection and practicality. Herein, a bamboo fiber/polybutylene succinate (PBS) biocomposite that carries silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and antibacterial activity, as well as the performance of interface reinforcement, were prepared using a green, efficient, and scalable bionic strategy of PDA coupling with minimal environmental footprint. The proposed bamboo fiber/PBS biocomposites, which showed multifunctionality and environmental adaptability, revealed good antibacterial activity, where the average inhibition zone diameters against E. coli and S. aureus bacteria reached 5.37 ± 0.36 and 3.96 ± 0.74 mm, respectively. Simultaneously, gains in the EMI shielding effectiveness (∼29.72 dB) and mechanical properties (improved by 24.58% in tensile strength, 39.13% in tensile modulus, 14.60% in flexural strength, and 19.67% in flexural modulus) were realized. Overall, this work displays a novel pathway toward eco-friendly and multifunctional nature fiber/polymer composites for high-value utilization. Environmental awareness of the global waste problem has driven the development of new green composites made from either renewable or biodegradable materials. Among the variety of available green composites, natural composites based on poly-lactic acid (PLA) have shown noteworthy performance due to their short degradation time after disposal, good strength, and ease of processing by conventional methods. In particular, green composites manufactured with PLA matrix reinforced with Manicaria Saccifera fabric (MF) display mechanical properties that have shown to be very competitive compared with similar materials. In this study, the tensile properties of a green composite of PLA reinforced with MF are optimized by using a Taguchi method approach. The processing parameters, fabric chemical treatment parameters, compression molding parameters, and fiber content are analyzed simultaneously to yield the optimum biocomposite properties. The predicted optimum parameters are experimentally verified. Tensile tests and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis are used. One of the big global, environmental, and socioeconomic challenges of today is to make a transition from fossil fuels to biomass as a sustainable supply of renewable raw materials for industry. Growing public awareness of the negative environmental effects of petrochemical-based products adds to the need for alternative production chains, especially in materials science. One option lies in the value-added upcycling of agricultural byproducts, which are increasingly being used for biocomposite materials in transport and building sector applications. Here, sunflower by-product (obtained by grinding the stems) is considered as a source of natural fibers for engineered biocomposite material. Recent results are shown for the main mechanical properties of sunflower-based biocomposites and the socioeconomic impact of their use. This paper demonstrates that sunflower stem makes a good candidate feedstock for material applications. Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.; Family: Malvaceae), is multipurpose crop, one of the potential alternatives of natural fiber for biocomposite materials. Longer fiber and higher cellulose contents are required for good quality biocomposite materials. However, average length of kenaf fiber (2.6 mm in bast and 1.28 mm in whole plant) is below the critical length (4 mm) for biocomposite production. Present study describes whether fiber length and cellulose content of kenaf plants could be enhanced by increasing GA biosynthesis in plants by overexpressing Arabidopsis thaliana Gibberellic Acid 20 oxidase (AtGA20ox) gene. AtGA20ox gene with intron was overexpressed in kenaf plants under the control of double CaMV 35S promoter, followed by in planta transformation into V36 and G4 varieties of kenaf. The lines with higher levels of bioactive GA (0.3- 1.52 ng g-1 fresh weight) were further characterized for their morphological and biochemical traits including vegetative and reproductive growth, fiber dimension and chemical composition. Positive impact of increased gibberellins on biochemical composition, fiber dimension and their derivative values were demonstrated in some lines of transgenic kenaf including increased cellulose content (91%), fiber length and quality but it still requires further study to confirm the critical level of this particular bioactive GA in transgenic plants. In this study, oil palm mesocarp fiber (OPMF) was treated with superheated steam (SHS) in order to modify its characteristics for biocomposite applications. Treatment was conducted at temperatures 190-230 °C for 1, 2 and 3 h. SHS-treated OPMF was evaluated for its chemical composition, thermal stability, morphology and crystallinity. OPMF treated at 230 °C exhibited lower hemicellulose content (9%) compared to the untreated OPMF (33%). Improved thermal stability of OPMF was found after the SHS treatment. Moreover, SEM and ICP analyses of SHS-treated OPMF showed that silica bodies were removed from OPMF after the SHS treatment. XRD results exhibited that OPMF crystallinity increased after SHS treatment, indicating tougher fiber properties. Hemicellulose removal makes the fiber surface more hydrophobic, whereby silica removal increases the surface roughness of the fiber. Overall, the results obtained herewith suggested that SHS is an effective treatment method for surface modification and subsequently improving the characteristics of the natural fiber. Over recent years, enthusiasm towards the manufacturing of biopolymers has attracted considerable attention due to the rising concern about depleting resources and worsening pollution. Among the biopolymers available in the world, polylactic acid (PLA) is one of the highest biopolymers produced globally and thus, making it suitable for product commercialisation. Therefore, the effectiveness of natural fibre reinforced PLA composite as an alternative material to substitute the non-renewable petroleum-based materials has been examined by researchers. The type of fibre used in fibre/matrix adhesion is very important because it influences the biocomposites' mechanical properties. Besides that, an outline of the present circumstance of natural fibre-reinforced PLA 3D printing, as well as its functions in 4D printing for applications of stimuli-responsive polymers were also discussed. This research paper aims to present the development and conducted studies on PLA-based natural fibre bio-composites over the last decade. In this work, the effects of chemical pretreatment and different fiber loadings on mechanical properties of the composites at the sub-micron scale were studied through nanoindentation. The composites were prepared by incorporating choline chloride (ChCl) pretreated rice husk waste (RHW) in low-density polyethylene (LDPE) using melt processing, followed by a thermal press technique. Nanoindentation experiments with quasi continuous stiffness mode (QCSM) were performed on the surface of produced composites with varying content of pretreated RHW (i.e., 10, 15, and 20 wt.%). Elastic modulus, hardness, and creep properties of fabricated composites were measured as a function of contact depth. The results confirmed the appreciable changes in hardness, elastic modulus, and creep rate of the composites. Compliance curves indicated that the composite having 20 wt.% of pretreated RHW loading was harder compared to that of the pure LDPE and other composite samples. The values of elastic modulus and hardness of the composite containing 20 wt.% pretreated RHW were increased by 4.1% and 24% as compared to that of the pure LDPE, respectively. The creep rate of 42.65 nm/s and change in depth of 650.42 nm were also noted for the composite with RHW loading of 20 wt.%, which showed the substantial effect of holding time at an applied peak load of 100 mN. Fiber–matrix interfacial adhesion is one of the key factors governing the final properties of natural fiber-based polymer composites. In this work, four extrusion reactive agents were tested as potential compatibilizers in polyhydroxylbutyrate (PHB)/cellulose composites: dicumyl peroxide (DCP), hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDI), resorcinol diglycidyl ether (RDGE), and triglycidyl isocyanurate (TGIC). The influence of the fibers and the different reactive agents on the mechanical properties, physical aging, and crystallization behavior were assessed. To evaluate the compatibilization effectiveness of each reactive agent, highly purified commercial cellulose fibers (TC90) were used as reference filler. Then, the influence of fiber purity on the compatibilization effect of the reactive agent HMDI was evaluated using untreated (U_RH) and chemically purified (T_RH) rice husk fibers, comparing the results with the ones using TC90 fibers. The results show that reactive agents interact with the polymer matrix at different levels, but all compositions showed a drastic embrittlement due to the aging of PHB. No clear compatibilization effect was found using DCP, RDGE, or TGIC reactive agents. On the other hand, the fiber–polymer interfacial adhesion was enhanced with HMDI. The purity of the fiber played an important role in the effectiveness of HMDI as a compatibilizer, since composites with highly purified fibers showed the greatest improvements in tensile strength and the most favorable morphology. None of the reactive agents negatively affected the compostability of PHB. Finally, thermoformed trays with good mold reproducibility were successfully obtained for PHB/T_RH/HMDI composition. This paper presents and analyzes the behavior of bumper beams made of PLA/flax composites subjected to low velocity impacts. The relevance of this material resides in the biodegradability of both fibers and matrix. Moreover, the after-impact behavior of this composite is excellent due to the absence of delamination. Impact tests have been performed using a drop weight tower within the range of impact energies 5 J ≤ E imp ≤ 73 J. The experimental setup enabled the measuring of impact velocity, residual velocity, load-time history and failure mode. Results show that damage generated during impact produces a significant reduction of residual stiffness but the residual strength is not affected by damage generated in the range of the applied impact energies considered. In this study, a mixture of thermoplastic polybutylene succinate (PBS), tapioca starch, glycerol and empty fruit bunch fiber was prepared by a melt compounding method using an industrial extruder. Generally, insertion of starch/glycerol has provided better strength performance, but worse thermal and water uptake to all specimens. The effect of fiber loading on mechanical, morphological, thermal and physical properties was studied in focus. Low interfacial bonding between fiber and matrix revealed a poor mechanical performance. However, higher fiber loadings have improved the strength values. This is because fibers regulate good load transfer mechanisms, as confirmed from SEM micrographs. Tensile and flexural strengths have increased 6.0% and 12.2%, respectively, for 20 wt% empty fruit bunch (EFB) fiber reinforcements. There was a slightly higher mass loss for early stage thermal decomposition, whereas regardless of EFB contents, insignificant changes on decomposition temperature were recorded. A higher lignin constituent in the composite (for high natural fiber volume) resulted in a higher mass residue, which would turn into char at high temperature. This observation indirectly proves the dimensional integrity of the composite. However, as expected, with higher EFB fiber contents in the composite, higher values in both the moisture uptake and moisture loss analyses were found. The use of 100% biodegradable composites in the industry is increasing significantly over the years, mainly due to their excellent properties as well as to the growing ecologic concern. However, after their manufacture, the composite pieces do not always have the final shape, requiring subsequent processing operations, usually drilling and trimming. The performance of cutting processes on fully biodegradable composites are often limited by induced damage as fraying and delamination. This type of phenomena is related, among others, with the cutting parameters and geometries of the tool. Orthogonal cutting is a simplified process that could help in the understanding of damage mechanisms, it is a well-known technique in traditional composites but its use in biocomposites is an almost unexplored field. This work focuses on flax/PLA 100% biodegradable woven composites. The specimens have been manufactured with different angles of orientation, ranging from 0° to 60°, being subjected to orthogonal cutting in a special machine developed for that purpose that allows to develop cutting tests with linear displacement at high speeds. Recycled polylactic acid (PLAr) was reinforced with treated nanocellulosic hemp fibers for biocomposite fabrication. Cellulosic fibers were extracted from hemp fibers chemically and treated enzymatically. Treated nanocellulosic fibers (NCF) were analyzed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. Biocomposite fabrication was done with PLAr and three concentrations of treated NCF (0.1%, 0.25%, and 1% (v/v)) and then studied for thermal stability and mechanical properties. Increased thermal stability was observed with increasing NCF concentrations. The highest value for Young's modulus was for PLAr + 0.25% (v/v) NCF (250.28 ± 5.47 MPa), which was significantly increased compared to PLAr (p = 0.022). There was a significant decrease in the tensile stress at break point for PLAr + 0.25% (v/v) NCF and PLAr + 1% (v/v) NCF as compared to control (p = 0.006 and 0.002, respectively). Today, plant fibers are considered as an important new renewable resource that can compete with some synthetic fibers, such as glass, in fiber-reinforced composites. In previous works, it was noted that the pectin-enriched middle lamella (ML) is a weak point in the fiber bundles for plant fiber-reinforced composites. ML is strongly bonded to the primary walls of the cells to form a complex layer called the compound middle lamella (CML). In a composite, cracks preferentially propagate along and through this layer when a mechanical loading is applied. In this work, middle lamellae of several plant fibers of different origin (flax, hemp, jute, kenaf, nettle, and date palm leaf sheath), among the most used for composite reinforcement, are investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The peak-force quantitative nanomechanical property mapping (PF-QNM) mode is used in order to estimate the indentation modulus of this layer. AFM PF-QNM confirmed its potential and suitability to mechanically characterize and compare the stiffness of small areas at the micro and nanoscale level, such as plant cell walls and middle lamellae. Our results suggest that the mean indentation modulus of ML is in the range from 6 GPa (date palm leaf sheath) to 16 GPa (hemp), depending on the plant considered. Natural fiber reinforced polymer-based composites have been growing into a type of green composites. The properties of natural fiber reinforced polymer-based composites are closely related to the structure of natural fibers. Bagasse fiber (BF) is one of the most used natural fibers for preparing natural fiber reinforced polymer-based composites. However, few examples of previous research touch on the quantitatively characterization of structure of BF and its effect on the properties of BF reinforced polymer-based composites. In this work, four kinds of BF including untreated BF (UBF), alkali treated BF (ABF), BF modified by silane coupling agent (SBF), and BF modified combining alkali treatment with silane coupling agent (ASBF) were prepared and melting blended with polylactic acid (PLA) to prepare PLA/BF composites. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetry (TGA) and mechanical properties testing were used to characterize and analyze the structure and properties of modified BF and its reinforced PLA-based composites. Results showed that the used methods changed the structure of BF and their bonding modes. The surface energies of UBF, ABF, SBF, and ASBF were 19.8 mJ/m2, 34.7 mJ/m2, 12.3 mJ/m2, and 21.6 mJ/m2, respectively. The O/C ratios of UBF, ABF, SBF and, ASBF are 0.48, 0.53, 0.47, and 0.51. Due to the synergistic effect of alkali treatment and silane coupling agent modification on the surface chemical properties, the content of silicon elements on the surface of ASBF (4.15%) was higher than that of ASBF (2.38%). However, due to the destroying of alkali treatment on the microstructure of BF, the alkali treatment had no prominently synergetic effect with coupling agent modification on the mechanical properties of PLA/BF composites. Alkali treatment removed the small molecular compounds from BF, decreased its thermal stability, and increased the crystalline region and crystallinity of cellulose. Meanwhile, alkali treatment made BF fibrillated and increased its contactable active area with the coupling agents, but destructed the nature structure of BF. This study investigates the evolution of hygromechanical properties of flax/PP nonwoven composites in a wide range of environmental Relative Humidity (RH) conditions from 10 to 98% RH. The influence of microstructure with various porosity content (Φ = 5, 30, 50%) on the mechanical and hygroscopic behaviours is studied and compared to glass/PP composites as a baseline. No significant changes in the moisture content and mechanical properties of glass-fibre reinforced composites are observed. For flax fibre nonwoven composites, the porosity greatly impacts the kinetic of sorption with moisture saturation varying from 9 h to 15 days with decreasing voids. Hygroscopic expansion is hardly modified by the porosity content while anisotropic expansion is always observed. Tensile behaviour and properties are slightly changed over a range of 10–75%RH but negatively impacted between 75% and 98% RH. Interestingly, unlike the tangent tensile modulus and strain at rupture of flax/PP composites, the yield strength exhibits a non-monotonic trend with an optimal value over 50% RH; compressive stresses at the fibre/matrix interface induced by flax fibres hygroexpansion are proposed to explain this trend. • Evolution of hygromechanical properties of flax/PP non-woven composites was investigated. • A large range of porosity (5, 30, 50%) and humidity (10–98%) was explored. • The kinetic sorption behaviour was greatly impacted by porosity content. • Tensile behaviour and properties are slightly changed over a range of 10–75%RH.
