This study proposes the One-to-One-Based Optimizer (OOBO), a new optimization technique for solving optimization problems in various scientific areas. The key idea in designing the suggested OOBO is to effectively use the knowledge of all members in the process of updating the algorithm population while preventing the algorithm from relying on specific members of the population. We use a one-to-one correspondence between the two sets of population members and the members selected as guides to increase the involvement of all population members in the update process. Each population member is chosen just once as a guide and is only utilized to update another member of the population in this one-to-one interaction. The proposed OOBO's performance in optimization is evaluated with fifty-two objective functions, encompassing unimodal, high-dimensional multimodal, and fixed-dimensional multimodal types, and the CEC 2017 test suite. The optimization results highlight the remarkable capacity of OOBO to strike a balance between exploration and exploitation within the problem-solving space during the search process. The quality of the optimization results achieved using the proposed OOBO is evaluated by comparing them to eight well-known algorithms. The simulation findings show that OOBO outperforms the other algorithms in addressing optimization problems and can give more acceptable quasi-optimal solutions. According to BESO's principle of binarizing continuous design variables and the excellent performance of the standard HPO algorithm in terms of solving continuous optimization problems, a discrete binary Hunter-prey optimization algorithm is introduced to construct an efficient topology optimization model. It was used to solve the problems that the BESO method of topology optimization has, such as easily falling into the local optimal value and being unable to obtain the optimal topology configuration; the metaheuristic algorithm was able to solve the topology optimization model's low computational efficiency and could easily produce intermediate elements and unclear boundaries. Firstly, the BHPO algorithm was constructed by discrete binary processing using the s-shape transformation function. Secondly, BHPO-BESO topology optimization theory was established by combining the BHPO algorithm with BESO topology optimization. Using the sensitivity information of the objective function and the updated principle of the meta-heuristic of the BHPO algorithm, a semi-random search for the optimal topology configuration was carried out. Finally, numerical simulation experiments were conducted by using the three typical examples of the cantilever beam, simply supported beam, and clamping beam as optimization objects and the results were compared with the solution results of BESO topology optimization. The experimental results showed that compared with BESO, BHPO-BESO could find the optimal topology configuration with lower compliance and maximum stiffness, and it has higher computational efficiency, which can solve the above problems. Unconstrained continuous large-scale global optimization (LSGO) is still a challenging task for a wide range of modern metaheuristic approaches. A cooperative coevolution approach is a good tool for increasing the performance of an evolutionary algorithm in solving high-dimensional optimization problems. However, the performance of cooperative coevolution approaches for LSGO depends significantly on the problem decomposition, namely, on the number of subcomponents and on how variables are grouped in these subcomponents. Also, the choice of the population size is still an open question for population-based algorithms. This paper discusses a method for selecting the number of subcomponents and the population size during the optimization process ("on fly") from a predefined pool of parameters. The selection of the parameters is based on their performance in the previous optimization steps. The main goal of the study is the improvement of coevolutionary decomposition-based algorithms for solving LSGO problems. In this paper, we propose a novel self-adapt evolutionary algorithm for solving continuous LSGO problems. We have tested this algorithm on 15 optimization problems from the IEEE LSGO CEC'2013 benchmark suite. When we face real problems using computational resources, we understand that it is common to find combinatorial problems in binary domains. Moreover, we have to take into account a large number of possible candidate solutions, since these can be numerous and make it complicated for classical algorithmic techniques to address them. When this happens, in most cases, it becomes a problem due to the high resource cost they generate, so it is of utmost importance to solve these problems efficiently. To cope with this problem, we can apply other methods, such as metaheuristics. There are some metaheuristics that allow operation in discrete search spaces; however, in the case of continuous swarm intelligence metaheuristics, it is necessary to adapt them to operate in discrete domains. To perform this adaptation, it is necessary to use a binary scheme to take advantage of the original moves of the metaheuristics designed for continuous problems. In this work, we propose to hybridize the whale optimization algorithm metaheuristic with the Q-learning reinforcement learning technique, which we call (the QBWOA). In this paper, a new stochastic optimization algorithm is introduced, called Driving Training-Based Optimization (DTBO), which mimics the human activity of driving training. The fundamental inspiration behind the DTBO design is the learning process to drive in the driving school and the training of the driving instructor. DTBO is mathematically modeled in three phases: (1) training by the driving instructor, (2) patterning of students from instructor skills, and (3) practice. The performance of DTBO in optimization is evaluated on a set of 53 standard objective functions of unimodal, high-dimensional multimodal, fixed-dimensional multimodal, and IEEE CEC2017 test functions types. The optimization results show that DTBO has been able to provide appropriate solutions to optimization problems by maintaining a proper balance between exploration and exploitation. The performance quality of DTBO is compared with the results of 11 well-known algorithms. The complexity of engineering optimization problems is increasing. Classical gradient-based optimization algorithms are a mathematical means of solving complex problems whose ability to do so is limited. Metaheuristics have become more popular than exact methods for solving optimization problems because of their simplicity and the robustness of the results that they yield. Recently, population-based bio-inspired algorithms have been demonstrated to perform favorably in solving a wide range of optimization problems. The jellyfish search optimizer (JSO) is one such bio-inspired metaheuristic algorithm, which is based on the food-finding behavior of jellyfish in the ocean. According to the literature, JSO outperforms many well-known meta-heuristics in a wide range of benchmark functions and real-world applications. JSO can also be used in conjunction with other artificial intelligence-related techniques. The success of JSO in solving diverse optimization problems motivates the present comprehensive discussion of the latest findings related to JSO. This paper reviews various issues associated with JSO, such as its inspiration, variants, and applications, and will provide the latest developments and research findings concerning JSO. The systematic review contributes to the development of modified versions and the hybridization of JSO to improve upon the original JSO and present variants, and will help researchers to develop superior metaheuristic optimization algorithms with recommendations of add-on intelligent agents. This paper introduces a new human-based metaheuristic algorithm called Sewing Training-Based Optimization (STBO), which has applications in handling optimization tasks. The fundamental inspiration of STBO is teaching the process of sewing to beginner tailors. The theory of the proposed STBO approach is described and then mathematically modeled in three phases: (i) training, (ii) imitation of the instructor's skills, and (iii) practice. STBO performance is evaluated on fifty-two benchmark functions consisting of unimodal, high-dimensional multimodal, fixed-dimensional multimodal, and the CEC 2017 test suite. The optimization results show that STBO, with its high power of exploration and exploitation, has provided suitable solutions for benchmark functions. The performance of STBO is compared with eleven well-known metaheuristic algorithms. The simulation results show that STBO, with its high ability to balance exploration and exploitation, has provided far more competitive performance in solving benchmark functions than competitor algorithms. Remora Optimization Algorithm (ROA) is a metaheuristic optimization algorithm, proposed in 2021, which simulates the parasitic attachment, experiential attack, and host feeding behavior of remora in the ocean. However, the performance of ROA is not very good. Considering the habits of the remora that rely on the host to find food, and in order to improve the performance of the ROA, we designed a new host-switching mechanism. By adding new a host-switching mechanism, joint opposite selection, and restart strategy, a modified remora optimization algorithm (MROA) is proposed. We use 23 standard benchmark and CEC2020 functions to test the performance of MROA and compare them with eight state-of-art optimization algorithms. The experimental results show that MROA has better-optimized performance and robustness. In this research study, a new combination search algorithm, based on indexing its constituent processes, is proposed to solve global optimisation problems. As optimisation problems become more complex, especially real‐world problems, the use of higher‐performance algorithms has become essential. One of the techniques that lead to design of an algorithm with stronger strategies in exploration and exploitation, as well as a better balance between these two strategies, is the appropriate combination of parent algorithm processes. The proposed algorithm was developed using a new innovation with the help of the supply‐demand‐based optimisation and the Harris hawks optimisation algorithms processes as parent algorithms. In this algorithm, the local and global search sections of its parent algorithms, are separated, and then based on a new indexing method in each iteration, according to the current population indexing, a global search and a local search are selected from the processes of its parent algorithms, and then the current population is updated with two selected sections. The performance and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in solving well‐known standard benchmark problems and in solving real‐world engineering problems have been tested and validated by statistical tools. The results of the research study show that the proposed algorithm can provide very effective results compared to other competing algorithms as well as its parent algorithms in many tests. Particle swarm optimization algorithms (PSOA) is a metaheuristic algorithm used to optimize computational problems using candidate solutions or particles based on selected quality measures. Despite the extensive research published, studies that critically examine its recent scientific developments and research impact are lacking. Therefore, the publication trends and research landscape on PSOA research were examined. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and bibliometric analysis techniques were applied to identify and analyze the published documents indexed in Scopus from 2001 to 2021. The published documents on PSOA increased from 8 to 1,717 (21,362.50%) due to the growing applications of PSOA in solving computational problems. "Conference papers" is the most common document type, whereas the most prolific researcher on PSOA is Andries P. Engelbrecht (South Africa). The most active affiliation (Ministry of Education) and funding organization (National Natural Science Foundation) are based in China. The research landscape on PSOA revealed high levels of publications, citations, and collaborations among the top authors, institutions, and countries worldwide. Keywords co-occurrence analysis revealed that "particle swarm optimization (PSO)" occurred more frequently than others. The findings of the study could provide researchers and policymakers with insights into the prospects and challenges of PSOA research relative to similar algorithms in the literature. Metaheuristic algorithms have a wide range of applications in handling optimization problems. In this study, a new metaheuristic algorithm, called the chef-based optimization algorithm (CBOA), is developed. The fundamental inspiration employed in CBOA design is the process of learning cooking skills in training courses. The stages of the cooking training process in various phases are mathematically modeled with the aim of increasing the ability of global search in exploration and the ability of local search in exploitation. A collection of 52 standard objective functions is utilized to assess the CBOA's performance in addressing optimization issues. The optimization results show that the CBOA is capable of providing acceptable solutions by creating a balance between exploration and exploitation and is highly efficient in the treatment of optimization problems. In addition, the CBOA's effectiveness in dealing with real-world applications is tested on four engineering problems. Twelve well-known metaheuristic algorithms have been selected for comparison with the CBOA. In order to develop the dynamic effectiveness of the structures such as trusses, the application of optimisation methods plays a significant role in improving the shape and size of elements. However, conjoining two heterogeneous variables, nodal coordinates and cross-sectional elements, makes a challenging optimisation problem that is nonlinear, multimodal, large-scale with dynamic constraints. To handle these challenges, evolutionary and swarm optimisation algorithms can be robust and practical tools and show great potential to solve such complex problems. This paper proposed a comparative truss optimisation framework to solve two large-scale structures, including 314-bar and 260-bar trusses. The proposed framework consists of twelve state-of-the-art bio-inspired algorithms. The experimental results show that the marine predators algorithm (MPA) performed best compared with other algorithms in terms of convergence speed and the quality of the proposed designs of the trusses. This paper presents a new methodology for the optimal integrated planning of medium- and low-voltage distribution systems, considering the location and sizing of distributed generation. The integrated problem is formulated as a mixed-integer nonlinear model and, to solve it, two well-known optimization algorithms (simulated annealing and iterated local search) are used. The intensification and diversification processes are usually the bottleneck of metaheuristic techniques for solving complex problems. To overcome such complexity, a new neighborhood search method based on the Zbus matrix (NSZM) is proposed, to explore the solution space more efficiently and effectively for both algorithms. The proposed methodology is validated and tested on a real distribution system taken from the literature. The results obtained are better than those reported in the literature. To verify the efficiency of the new NSZM method, the Wilcoxon signed ranks test is used to measure the performance behavior of the NSZM method in the two optimization algorithms used. The metaheuristic optimization algorithms are relatively new optimization algorithms introduced to solve optimization problems in recent years. For example, the firefly algorithm (FA) is one of the metaheuristic algorithms inspired by the fireflies' flashing behavior. However, its weakness in terms of exploration and early convergence has been pointed out. In this paper, two approaches were proposed to improve the FA. In the first proposed approach, a new improved opposition-based learning FA (IOFA) method was presented to accelerate the convergence and improve the FA's exploration capability. In the second proposed approach, a symbiotic organisms search (SOS) algorithm improved the exploration and exploitation of the first approach; two new parameters set these two goals, and the second approach was named IOFASOS. The purpose of the second method is that in the process of the SOS algorithm, the whole population is effective in the IOFA method to find solutions in the early stages of implementation, and with each iteration, fewer solutions are affected in the population. The experiments on 24 standard benchmark functions were conducted, and the first proposed approach showed a better performance in the small and medium dimensions and exhibited a relatively moderate performance in the higher dimensions. In contrast, the second proposed approach was better in increasing dimensions. In general, the empirical results showed that the two new approaches outperform other algorithms in most mathematical benchmarking functions. Thus, The IOFASOS model has more efficient solutions. The introduction of cloud computing has brought about significant developments in information technology. Users can benefit from the multitude of cloud technology services only by connecting to the internet. In cloud computing, load balancing is the fundamental issue that has challenged experts in this research area. Load balancing helps increase user satisfaction and enhance systems' productivity through efficient and fair work assignments between computing resources. Besides, maintaining a load balancing among resources would be difficult because the resources are usually distributed in a heterogeneous way. Many load-balancing methods try to solve this problem by the metaheuristics algorithm, and each of them attempted to enhance the operation and efficiency of systems. In this paper, Grey wolf optimization (GWO) algorithm has been used based on the resource reliability capability to maintain proper load balancing. In this method, first, the GWO algorithm tries to find the unemployed or busy nodes and, after discovering this node, try to calculate each node's threshold and fitness function. In this study, the modification of the Deb feasibility method is considered to solve the constrained optimization problems. In the developed modified Deb feasibility constraint method, the third rule in its procedure was revised in order to increase the performance of the Deb feasibility constraint handling method. The innovation in the method is based on generating a new individual by using both possible solutions that violate the constraints in the method used for solving the problem. In detail, discussions were given about the application and usefulness of six constrained handling techniques. Furthermore, genetic algorithm, particle swarm optimization, Harris hawks optimization, whale optimization algorithm, grey wolf optimization and sine cosine algorithms were applied to both various benchmark functions and also different engineering application problems such as pressure vessel design, welded beam design, speed reducer design and active filter design. Overall the experimental results show that modified Deb feasibility constraint handling technique is more robust and efficient than Deb feasibility technique and most of the other constraint handling techniques. One of the useful knowledge representation tools, which can describe the joint probability distribution between some random variables with a graphical model and can be trained by a dataset, is the Bayesian network (BN). A BN is composed of a network structure and a conditional probability distribution table for each node. Discovering an optimal BN structure is an NP‐hard optimization problem that various meta‐heuristic algorithms are applied to solve this problem by researchers. The genetic algorithms, ant colony optimization, evolutionary programming, artificial bee colony, and bacterial foraging optimization are some of the meta‐heuristic methods to solve this problem using a dataset. Most of these methods are applying a scoring metric to generate the best network structure from a set of candidates. A Fixed Structure Learning Automata‐Based (FSLA‐B) algorithm is presented in this paper to solve the structure learning problem of BNs. There is a fixed structure learning automaton for each pair of vertices in the BN's graph structure in the proposed algorithm. The action of this automaton determines the presence and direction of an edge between the vertices. The proposed algorithm performs a guided search procedure using the FSLA and escapes from local optimums. Several datasets are utilised in this paper to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm. By performing various experiments, multiple meta‐heuristic algorithms are compared with the introduced new one. We consider knowledge-oriented models, problems, and algorithms for routing traveling salesmen in complex networks. The formalization leads to models of pseudo-Boolean discrete optimization with constraints that take into account the specifics of the multiple traveling salesmen problem. We consider a class of problems that can be represented in the form of pseudo-Boolean optimization models with separable objective functions (monotone, linear) and constraints in the form of disjunctive normal forms (DNFs). We demonstrate the possibility of an approximate synthesis of DNF constraints based on precedent information. The methodology, theoretical principles, and algorithms for solving problems of this class are presented. It is shown that the solution of routing problems can be based on the application of a multiagent approach in combination with clustering of the original problem, pseudo-Boolean optimization algorithms with disjunctive constraints, and metaheuristics. Recent years have witnessed the use of metaheuristic algorithms to solve the optimization problems that usually require extensive computations and time. Among others, scatter search is the widely used evolutionary metaheuristic algorithm. It uses the information of global optima, which is stored in a different and unique set of solutions. In this paper, an updated review of scatter search (SS) is given. SS has been successfully applied in a variety of research problems, namely, data mining, bioinformatics, and engineering design. This paper presents the modified and hybrid versions of SS with their applications. BBO is one of the new metaheuristic optimization algorithms, which is based on the science of biogeography. It can be used to solve optimization problems through the migration and drift of species between habitats. Many improved BBO algorithms have been proposed, but there were still many shortcomings in global optimization, convergence speed, and algorithm complexity. In response to the above problems, this paper proposes an improved BBO algorithm (DCGBBO) by hierarchical tissue-like P system with triggering ablation rules. Membrane computing is a branch of natural computing that aims to abstract computational models (P system) from the structure and function of biological cells and from the collaboration of cell groups such as organs and tissues. In this paper, firstly, a dynamic crossover migration operator is generated to improve the global search ability and also increase the species diversity. Secondly, a dynamic Gaussian mutation operator is introduced to speed up convergence and improve local search capabilities. To guarantee the correctness and feasibility of the mutation, a unified maximum mutation rate is designed. Finally, a hierarchical tissue-like P system with triggering ablation rules is combined with the DCGBBO algorithm, making use of evolution rules and communication rules to achieve migration and mutation of solutions and reduce computational complexity. In the experiments, eight classic benchmark functions and CEC 2017 benchmark functions are applied to demonstrate the effect of our algorithm. Abstract Environmental models are used extensively to evaluate the effectiveness of a range of design, planning, operational, management and policy options. However, the number of options that can be evaluated manually is generally limited, making it difficult to identify the most suitable options to consider in decision-making processes. By linking environmental models with evolutionary and other metaheuristic optimization algorithms, the decision options that make best use of scarce resources, achieve the best environmental outcomes for a given budget or provide the best trade-offs between competing objectives can be identified. This Introductory Overview presents reasons for embedding formal optimization approaches in environmental decision-making processes, details how environmental problems are formulated as optimization problems and outlines how single- and multi-objective optimization approaches find good solutions to environmental problems. Optimization can play an important role in supporting agricultural community not only in designing and manufacturing mechanical equipment but also in optimal crop planning. The related optimization models are not necessarily linear due to varying resources and complex environmental processes. The traditional linear programming techniques may not be practical in such situations. Metaheuristics are powerful approaches to solve complex nonlinear models. Metaheuristics are developed by transforming dynamics of natural phenomena to artificial intelligence computational environment. Realizing the potential adaptability of working principles of irrigation tools, this paper develops a novel optimization algorithm called Targeted Showering Optimization (TSO) algorithm which aims to solve linear, nonlinear and multi-objective optimization problems arising in agriculture, engineering and other scientific areas. In the present work, the design of TSO algorithm has been elaborated in detail and is followed by the performance evaluation of TSO algorithm by applying it to six well-known benchmark functions. The obtained results reveal that the developed method finds the best quality solutions of at least four benchmark functions in just 100 iterations and in additional 100 iterations it supersedes other nature inspired algorithms. To show the applicability of the proposed method in agriculture, a case study regarding the model of optimal crop rotation in Slovenian organic farming has been solved by TSO. The results of optimization models of crop rotation produced by TSO are also promising and provide a clear trade-off between total income and the nitrogen off-take when the maximization of total income and minimization of nitrogen off-take are dealt simultaneously. This piece of work deals with implementing a new meta-heuristic algorithm symbiotic organisms search to address multi-objective optimal power flow (OPF) problems in power systems considering several operational constraints. The algorithm has been implemented on IEEE 30 and IEEE 118 bus test systems for various single objective and bi-objective functions to assess its efficacy in solving the OPF problem and its ability to handle large systems. A comparative study of the results, predominantly considering those obtained using quasi oppositional teaching learning optimization(QOTLBO), teaching learning optimization (TLBO), multiobjective harmony search algorithm (MOHS), nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) from the literature are detailed in this paper. Investigation of the results reveal that the algorithm is successful in producing superior results for both the systems and its performance is also encouraging in solving conflicting objectives. Biogeography-based optimization (BBO) is an emerging meta-heuristic algorithm. BBO is inspired from the migration of species from one island to another. This study presents the solution of the wind farm layout optimization problem with wind turbines having non-uniform hub heights and rotor radii using BBO and an improved version of BBO. This study proposes an improved version of BBO, Fitness Difference Based BBO (FD-BBO). FD-BBO is obtained by incorporating the concept of fitness differences in original BBO. First, in order to justify the superiority of FD-BBO over BBO, it is tested over 15 standard test problems of optimization. The numerical results of FD-BBO are compared with the original version of BBO and an advanced version of BBO, Blended BBO (BBBO). Through graphical and statistical analyses, FD-BBO is established to be an efficient and accurate algorithm. The BBO, BBBO and FD-BBO are than applied to solve the wind farm layout optimization problem. In the considered problem, not only the location of the wind turbines but hub heights and rotor radii are also taken as decision variables. The ever evolving complexity of real-world problems had become an impetus for the development of many new and efficient optimization algorithms. Meta-heuristics based on evolutionary computation and swarm intelligence are successful examples of nature-inspired optimization techniques. In this work, a new Dynamic Social Behavior (DSB) algorithm is proposed to solve global optimization problems. The DSB algorithm is based on the simulation of cooperative behavior of animal groups. In the proposed algorithm, individuals emulate the interaction of individuals based on biological laws of cooperative colony. This algorithm partially adopts the foraging strategy of animal groups and utilizes recruitment signal as a means of information transfer among individuals. In order to illustrate the proficiency and robustness of the proposed algorithm, it is compared with other well-known evolutionary algorithms. The comparison examines several series of widely used benchmark functions and an engineering problem on hyper beamforming optimization. The Sand Cat Swarm Optimization (SCSO) algorithm is a recently introduced metaheuristic with balanced behavior in the exploration and exploitation phases. However, it is not fast in convergence and may not be successful in finding the global optima, especially for complex problems since it starts the exploitation phase late. Moreover, the performance of SCSO is also affected by incorrect position as it depends on the location of the global optimum. Therefore, this study proposes a new method for the SCSO algorithm with a multidisciplinary principle inspired by the Political (Parliamentary) system, which is named PSCSO. The suggested algorithm increases the chances of finding the global solution by randomly choosing positions between the position of the candidate's best solution available so far and the current position during the exploitation phase. In this regard, a new coefficient is defined that affects the exploration and exploitation phases. In addition, a new mathematical model is introduced to use in the exploitation phase. The performance of the PSCSO algorithm is analyzed on a total of 41 benchmark functions from CEC2015, 2017, and 2019. In addition, its performance is evaluated in four classical engineering problems. The proposed algorithm is compared with the SCSO, Stochastic variation and Elite collaboration in SCSO (SE-SCSO), Hybrid SCSO (HSCSO), Parliamentary Optimization Algorithm (POA), and Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm (AOA) algorithms, which have been proposed in recent years. Tree-Seed Algorithm is a kind of swarm intelligence optimization algorithm. It is used to solve various problems widely, but it still has some shortcomings need to be overcame, such as imbalance between exploration and exploitation, local stagnation, premature convergence, and so on. In this study, an enhanced meta-heuristic optimization algorithm, called Migration Tree-Seed Algorithm (MTSA), is proposed inspiring by Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO). The hierarchical gravity learning and random-based migration mechanisms are introduced to overcome the intrinsic defects of the basic TSA. Firstly, hierarchy mechanism ensures the tree migration to guide the seed generation avoiding the local stagnation. Secondly, random-based migration mechanism increases the seed diversity to improve the exploration ability. Finally, the coordinated update of the two mechanisms actuate a suitable trade-off between exploration ans exploitation. We use IEEE CEC 2014 benchmark functions to compare MTSA with basic TSA, the TSA variants (STSA, EST-TSA, fb_TSA), GWO, ABC, SCA, BOA, JAYA and RSA. MTSA is subsequently applied to three classical engineering design problems reported in the specialized literature. In this paper, an improved bio-inspired optimization algorithm called Seagull Optimization Algorithm (ISOA) is proposed. ISOA is developed based on three techniques, these techniques use the collaborative optimization strategy, simulating new bird's generation, and rearranging subgroups. The CEC2020 is utilized to obtain the role and importance of the improved algorithm. Furthermore, the ISOA is applied to find the optimal coordination of Distance and Directional Over-Current Relays (D&DOCRs). The problem of D&DOCRs coordination is more complicated and has numerous constraints. Hence, in this work, a developed object function (DOF) is proposed to set the Distance relays with minimum available settings. ISOA and DOF are tested on the IEEE 8-bus and IEEE 14-bus test systems. ISOA algorithm is used to coordinate the D&DOCRs in both the near and far ends of transmission lines. For years, meta-heuristic algorithms have been widely studied and many improved versions have been developed: from the evolution of the swarm topologies of the Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm, to the using of machine learning to Differential Evolutionary algorithms. However, the tuning of the fundamental meta-heuristic parameters has been less studied, but may lead to significant improvements on the convergence accuracy of these algorithms. This paper aims at developing an automated methodology to calibrate the parameters of population-based meta-heuristic algorithms for optimization problems. Based on the kriging estimation of the best combination of parameters, the Automated parameter tuning of Meta-heuristics (AptM) methodology gives the optimal algorithm setup for each considered problem in order to lead to a better convergence accuracy. The proposed AptM methodology is used to tune three different meta-heuristic algorithms, each applied to twelve mathematical unimodal or multimodal objective functions. AptM methodology performance is assessed by comparison of classical setups usually used in the literature. The numerical results show that the AptM methodology allows a significant improvement of the convergence accuracy of meta-heuristics with an average improvement of 62.02%, 69.12% and 64.94% on optimization problems defined in dimensions 10, 30 and 50 respectively. An experimental criterion is defined based on the convergence accuracy of the AptM methodology over the classical setups, assessing the AptM performances. The previous experimental criterion allows to compare the AptM methodology over the base-set. This paper proposes a novel nature-inspired meta-heuristic optimization algorithm, called Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA), which mimics the social behavior of humpback whales. The algorithm is inspired by the bubble-net hunting strategy. WOA is tested with 29 mathematical optimization problems and 6 structural design problems. Optimization results prove that the WOA algorithm is very competitive compared to the state-of-art meta-heuristic algorithms as well as conventional methods. This paper presents a novel optimization algorithm that consists of metaheuristic processes to solve the problem of the capillary distribution of goods in major urban areas taking into consideration the features encountered in real life: time windows, capacity constraints, compatibility between orders and vehicles, maximum number of orders per vehicle, orders that depend on the pickup and delivery and not returning to the depot. We consider in this paper a double loading problem (DLP), an NP-hard optimization problem of extreme economic relevance in industrial areas. The problem consists in loading items into bins, then stowing bins in a set of compartments. The main objective is to minimize the number of used bins. We state the mathematical model as well as a modified binary particle swarm optimization with FFD initialization that outperforms state-of-the-art approaches carried out on a large testbed instances. In many important design problems, some decisions should be made by finding the global optimum of a multiextremal objective function subject to a set of constrains. Frequently, especially in engineering applications, the functions involved in optimization process are black-box with unknown analytical representations and hard to evaluate. Such computationally challenging decision-making problems often cannot be solved by traditional optimization techniques based on strong suppositions about the problem (convexity, differentiability, etc.). Nature and evolutionary inspired metaheuristics are also not always successful in finding global solutions to these problems due to their multiextremal character. In this paper, some innovative and powerful deterministic approaches developed by the authors to construct numerical methods for solving the mentioned problems are surveyed. Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA) is a stochastic population-based metaheuristic designed for solving continuous optimization problems. It has a flexible and well-balanced mechanism for enhancing exploration and exploitation abilities. In this paper, we adapt the structure of GSA for solving the data clustering problem, the problem of grouping data into clusters such that the data in each cluster share a high degree of similarity while being very dissimilar to data from other clusters. The proposed algorithm, which is called Grouping GSA (GGSA), differs from the standard GSA in two important aspects. First, a special encoding scheme, called grouping encoding, is used in order to make the relevant structures of clustering problems become parts of solutions. Second, given the encoding, special GSA updating equations suitable for the solutions with grouping encoding are used. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated through several benchmark datasets from the well-known UCI Machine Learning Repository. Its performance is compared with the standard GSA, the Artificial Bee Colony (ABC), the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), the Firefly Algorithm (FA), and nine other well-known classical classification techniques from the literature. Abstract: The present paper proposes a novel feature selection scheme for face recognition problems, employing a new modified version of the gravitational search algorithm, a recently proposed metaheuristic optimization algorithm. The feature selection scheme, which reduces the dimensionality of the set of extracted features by choosing the features with high discriminative power, has been employed in conjunction with three contemporary feature extraction algorithms popularly employed for face recognition purposes, namely local binary pattern (LBP), modified census transform (MCT), and local gradient pattern (LGP) algorithms. The feature selectionis carried out by formulating a fitness function as a ratio of the within class distance to the between class distance and then a binary version of traditional GSA is developed for solving this problem. This binary GSA (named BGSA) is further enhanced to propose a novel binary variation of GSA with dynamic adaptive inertia weight (named BAW-GSA). Six new algorithms for face recognition are proposed hybridizing BGSA or BAW-GSA with each of LBP, MCT and LGP algorithms. In each algorithm, the classification step is carried out using backpropagation neural network. The algorithms were extensively tested for five benchmark face databases (Yale A, Yale B extended, ORL, LFW and AR) and it was conclusively proven that our proposed algorithms could comfortably outperform several competing, contemporary algorithms existing in literature and, among all algorithms considered, LGP hybridized with BAW-GSA emerged as the most superior algorithm. This work details the development of the Multi-objective Lichtenberg Algorithm, the version capable of dealing with more than one objective of a newly created meta-heuristic inspired by the propagation of radial intra-cloud lightning and Lichtenberg figures. The algorithm considers in its optimization routine a hybrid system based on both the population and the trajectory, demonstrating a great capacity for exploration and exploitation since it distributes points to be evaluated in the objective function through a Lichtenberg figure that is shot in sizes and different rotations at each iteration. The Multi-objective Lichtenberg Algorithm (MOLA) is the first hybrid multi-objective meta-heuristic and was tested against traditional and recent meta-heuristics using famous and complex test function groups and also constrained complex engineering problems. In this paper, a new compact algorithm is proposed. Two sinusoidal formulas are used to automatically adjust the crossover rate and the mutation scaling factor in the compact Differential Evolution (cDE) metaheuristic. The proposed algorithm, called Compound Sinusoidal cDE, CScDE, is compared to seven state-of-the-art compact algorithms on the well-known BBOB test-bed, the CEC-2014 test suite for continuous optimisation, as well as five real-world optimisation problems chosen from the CEC-2011 benchmarks. The CScDE algorithm outperformed its competitors for most problem categories and over most dimensions. In this paper, we consider the application of the zero-order mini-batch optimization method in the problem of finding optimal control of a pencil of trajectories of nonlinear deterministic systems in the case of incomplete information about the state vector. The pencil of trajectories originates from a given set of initial states. To solve the problem, the structure of a feedback system is proposed, which contains models of the plant, measuring system, nonlinear state observer and control law of the fixed structure with unknown coefficients. The objective function proposed considers the quality of pencil of trajectories control, which is estimated by the average value of the Bolz functional over the given set of initial states. Unknown control laws of a plant and an observer are found in the form of expansions in terms of orthonormal systems of basis functions, which are specified on the set of possible states of a dynamical system. The original pencil of trajectories control problem is reduced to a global optimization problem, which is solved using the well-proven zero-order method, which uses a modified mini-batch approach in a random search procedure with adaptation. We consider a parallel machine scheduling problem with random processing/setup times and adjustable production rates. The objective functions to be minimized consist of two parts; the first part is related with the due date performance (i.e., the tardiness of the jobs), while the second part is related with the setting of machine speeds. Therefore, the decision variables include both the production schedule (sequences of jobs) and the production rate of each machine. The optimization process, however, is significantly complicated by the stochastic factors in themanufacturing system. To address the difficulty, a simulation-based threestage optimization framework is presented in this paper for high-quality robust solutions to the integrated scheduling problem. The first stage (crude optimization) is featured by the ordinal optimization theory, the second stage (finer optimization) is implemented with a metaheuristic called differential evolution, and the third stage (fine-tuning) is characterized by a perturbation-based local search. Subset problems (set partitioning, packing, and covering) are formal models for many practical optimization problems. A set partitioning problem determines how the items in one set (S) can be partitioned into smaller subsets. All items in S must be contained in one and only one partition. Related problems are set packing (all itemsmust be contained in zero or one partitions) and set covering (all itemsmust be contained in at least one partition).Here, we present a hybrid solver based on ant colony optimization (ACO) combined with arc consistency for solving this kind of problems. ACO is a swarm intelligence metaheuristic inspired on ants behavior when they search for food. It allows to solve complex combinatorial problems for which traditional mathematical techniques may fail. By other side, in constraint programming, the solving process of Constraint Satisfaction Problems can dramatically reduce the search space by means of arc consistency enforcing constraint consistencies either prior to or during search. Our hybrid approach was tested with set covering and set partitioning dataset benchmarks. To improve the performance of the krill herd (KH) algorithm, in this paper, a L'evy-flight krill herd (LKH) algorithm is proposed for solving optimization tasks within limited computing time. The improvement includes the addition of a new local L'evy-flight (LLF) operator during the process when updating krill in order to improve its efficiency and reliability coping with global numerical optimization problems. The LLF operator encourages the exploitation and makes the krill individuals search the space carefully at the end of the search. The elitism scheme is also applied to keep the best krill during the process when updating the krill. Fourteen standard benchmark functions are used to verify the effects of these improvements and it is illustrated that, in most cases, the performance of this novel metaheuristic LKH method is superior to, or at least highly competitive with, the standard KH and other population-based optimizationmethods. Recently, a new fruit fly optimization algorithm (FOA) is proposed to solve optimization problems. In this paper, we empirically study the performance of FOA. Six different nonlinear functions are selected as testing functions. The experimental results illustrate that FOA cannot solve complex optimization problems effectively. In order to enhance the performance of FOA, an improved FOA (named LGMS-FOA) is proposed. Simulation results and comparisons of LGMS-FOA with FOA and other metaheuristics show that LGMS-FOA can greatly enhance the searching efficiency and greatly improve the searching quality.
