The complexity of engineering optimization problems is increasing. Classical gradient-based optimization algorithms are a mathematical means of solving complex problems whose ability to do so is limited. Metaheuristics have become more popular than exact methods for solving optimization problems because of their simplicity and the robustness of the results that they yield. Recently, population-based bio-inspired algorithms have been demonstrated to perform favorably in solving a wide range of optimization problems. The jellyfish search optimizer (JSO) is one such bio-inspired metaheuristic algorithm, which is based on the food-finding behavior of jellyfish in the ocean. According to the literature, JSO outperforms many well-known meta-heuristics in a wide range of benchmark functions and real-world applications. JSO can also be used in conjunction with other artificial intelligence-related techniques. The success of JSO in solving diverse optimization problems motivates the present comprehensive discussion of the latest findings related to JSO. This paper reviews various issues associated with JSO, such as its inspiration, variants, and applications, and will provide the latest developments and research findings concerning JSO. The systematic review contributes to the development of modified versions and the hybridization of JSO to improve upon the original JSO and present variants, and will help researchers to develop superior metaheuristic optimization algorithms with recommendations of add-on intelligent agents. In this research study, a new combination search algorithm, based on indexing its constituent processes, is proposed to solve global optimisation problems. As optimisation problems become more complex, especially real‐world problems, the use of higher‐performance algorithms has become essential. One of the techniques that lead to design of an algorithm with stronger strategies in exploration and exploitation, as well as a better balance between these two strategies, is the appropriate combination of parent algorithm processes. The proposed algorithm was developed using a new innovation with the help of the supply‐demand‐based optimisation and the Harris hawks optimisation algorithms processes as parent algorithms. In this algorithm, the local and global search sections of its parent algorithms, are separated, and then based on a new indexing method in each iteration, according to the current population indexing, a global search and a local search are selected from the processes of its parent algorithms, and then the current population is updated with two selected sections. The performance and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in solving well‐known standard benchmark problems and in solving real‐world engineering problems have been tested and validated by statistical tools. The results of the research study show that the proposed algorithm can provide very effective results compared to other competing algorithms as well as its parent algorithms in many tests. The results show that the proper combination of optimisation algorithm processes can be used as a technique to design more powerful algorithms to solve global optimisation problems, especially complex real‐world problems. The metaheuristic optimization algorithms are relatively new optimization algorithms introduced to solve optimization problems in recent years. For example, the firefly algorithm (FA) is one of the metaheuristic algorithms inspired by the fireflies' flashing behavior. However, its weakness in terms of exploration and early convergence has been pointed out. In this paper, two approaches were proposed to improve the FA. In the first proposed approach, a new improved opposition-based learning FA (IOFA) method was presented to accelerate the convergence and improve the FA's exploration capability. In the second proposed approach, a symbiotic organisms search (SOS) algorithm improved the exploration and exploitation of the first approach; two new parameters set these two goals, and the second approach was named IOFASOS. The purpose of the second method is that in the process of the SOS algorithm, the whole population is effective in the IOFA method to find solutions in the early stages of implementation, and with each iteration, fewer solutions are affected in the population. The experiments on 24 standard benchmark functions were conducted, and the first proposed approach showed a better performance in the small and medium dimensions and exhibited a relatively moderate performance in the higher dimensions. In contrast, the second proposed approach was better in increasing dimensions. In general, the empirical results showed that the two new approaches outperform other algorithms in most mathematical benchmarking functions. Thus, The IOFASOS model has more efficient solutions. One of the most powerful tools for solving optimization problems is optimization algorithms (inspired by nature) based on populations. These algorithms provide a solution to a problem by randomly searching in the search space. The design's central idea is derived from various natural phenomena, the behavior and living conditions of living organisms, laws of physics, etc. A new population-based optimization algorithm called the Binary Spring Search Algorithm (BSSA) is introduced to solve optimization problems. BSSA is an algorithm based on a simulation of the famous Hooke's law (physics) for the traditional weights and springs system. In this proposal, the population comprises weights that are connected by unique springs. The mathematical modeling of the proposed algorithm is presented to be used to achieve solutions to optimization problems. The results were thoroughly validated in different unimodal and multimodal functions; additionally, the BSSA was compared with high-performance algorithms: binary grasshopper optimization algorithm, binary dragonfly algorithm, binary bat algorithm, binary gravitational search algorithm, binary particle swarm optimization, and binary genetic algorithm. This piece of work deals with implementing a new meta-heuristic algorithm symbiotic organisms search to address multi-objective optimal power flow (OPF) problems in power systems considering several operational constraints. The algorithm has been implemented on IEEE 30 and IEEE 118 bus test systems for various single objective and bi-objective functions to assess its efficacy in solving the OPF problem and its ability to handle large systems. A comparative study of the results, predominantly considering those obtained using quasi oppositional teaching learning optimization(QOTLBO), teaching learning optimization (TLBO), multiobjective harmony search algorithm (MOHS), nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) from the literature are detailed in this paper. Investigation of the results reveal that the algorithm is successful in producing superior results for both the systems and its performance is also encouraging in solving conflicting objectives. Shuffled frog-leaping algorithm (SFLA), a novel meta-heuristic optimization algorithm inspired by the foraging behavior of frogs, has been widely applied to many areas for combination problems. But it is easy to fall into the local optimum especially for the continuous optimization problems. This paper proposed a novel variant of SFLA for the continuous optimization problems based on the expanded framework (called the lévy flight-based shuffled frog-leaping algorithm, LSFLA). In this new framework, the shuffling process, local search step and global search step are combined according to the exploration and exploitation mechanism. An lévy flight based attractor was adopted for the local search step, which enhance the local search ability of algorithm due to the search of short walking distance and occasionally longer walking distance. An interaction learning rule was used for the global search step, which enhances the exploration ability. In order to test the effectiveness of LSFLA, thirty benchmark functions, six real-world constrained continuous optimization problems and a real-world support vector machine (SVM) parameter optimization problem were compared to the many well-known heuristic methods. This paper presents a novel optimization algorithm that consists of metaheuristic processes to solve the problem of the capillary distribution of goods in major urban areas taking into consideration the features encountered in real life: time windows, capacity constraints, compatibility between orders and vehicles, maximum number of orders per vehicle, orders that depend on the pickup and delivery and not returning to the depot. With the intention of reducing the wide variety of constraints and complexities, known as the Rich Vehicle Routing Problem, this algorithm proposes feasible alternatives in order to achieve the main objective of this research work: the reduction of costs by minimizing distances and reducing the number of vehicles used as long as the service quality to customers is optimum and a load balance among vehicles is maintained. Two new approaches for the solution of the $$p$$ -median problem in the plane are proposed. One is a Variable Neighborhood Search and the other one is a concentric search. Both approaches are enhanced by a front-end procedure for finding good starting solutions and a decomposition heuristic acting as a post optimization procedure. Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA) is a stochastic population-based metaheuristic designed for solving continuous optimization problems. It has a flexible and well-balanced mechanism for enhancing exploration and exploitation abilities. In this paper, we adapt the structure of GSA for solving the data clustering problem, the problem of grouping data into clusters such that the data in each cluster share a high degree of similarity while being very dissimilar to data from other clusters. The proposed algorithm, which is called Grouping GSA (GGSA), differs from the standard GSA in two important aspects. First, a special encoding scheme, called grouping encoding, is used in order to make the relevant structures of clustering problems become parts of solutions. Second, given the encoding, special GSA updating equations suitable for the solutions with grouping encoding are used. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated through several benchmark datasets from the well-known UCI Machine Learning Repository. Its performance is compared with the standard GSA, the Artificial Bee Colony (ABC), the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), the Firefly Algorithm (FA), and nine other well-known classical classification techniques from the literature. The optimal power flow (OPF) is a practical problem in a power system with complex characteristics such as a large number of control parameters and also multi-modal and non-convex objective functions with inequality and nonlinear constraints. Thus, tackling the OPF problem is becoming a major priority for power engineers and researchers. Many metaheuristic algorithms with different search strategies have been developed to solve the OPF problem. Although, the majority of them suffer from stagnation, premature convergence, and local optima trapping during the optimization process, which results in producing low solution qualities, especially for real-world problems. This study is devoted to proposing an effective hybridizing of whale optimization algorithm (WOA) and a modified moth-flame optimization algorithm (MFO) named WMFO to solve the OPF problem. In the proposed WMFO, the WOA and the modified MFO cooperate to effectively discover the promising areas and provide high-quality solutions. A randomized boundary handling is used to return the solutions that have violated the permissible boundaries of search space. Moreover, a greedy selection operator is defined to assess the acceptance criteria of new solutions. Ultimately, the performance of the WMFO is scrutinized on single and multi-objective cases of different OPF problems including standard IEEE 14-bus, IEEE 30-bus, IEEE 39-bus, IEEE 57-bus, and IEEE118-bus test systems. This manuscript proposes a new metaheuristic optimization algorithm for solving the problems related to constraint optimization. The proposed algorithm is based on a nature-inspired algorithm like a lightning search algorithm and differential evolution algorithm. The proposed algorithm consists of two stages. In the first/exploitation/local stage, the fitness values are calculated by using a lightning search algorithm, the inclusion of weight factor in the lightning search algorithm, and differential evolution algorithm using the same population. In the second/global/exploration stage, the minimum value of fitness for each row population by the implementation of the above three algorithms is updated with the population. The first and second stage continues until certain criteria are achieved. The final minimum value is the optimized result. Validation of the proposed methodology is performed by using 60 benchmark functions. The proposed methodology is compared with seven other well-known algorithms namely the lightning search algorithm, differential evolution algorithm cuckoo search algorithm, particle swarm optimization algorithm, seagull optimization algorithm, chimp optimization algorithm, and mayfly algorithm by computing mean, standard deviation, best and worst value for 60 benchmark functions. The proposed methodology is also validated by implementing it in seven real-time constraint optimized problems. Furthermore, the efficiency of the proposed technique has been validated statistically for unimodal and multimodal test functions. A new hybrid meta-heuristic approach Jaya–PPS, which is the combination of the Jaya algorithm and Powell's Pattern Search method, is proposed in this paper to solve the optimal power flow (OPF) problem for minimization of fuel cost, emission and real power losses and total voltage deviation simultaneously. The recently developed Jaya algorithm has been applied for the exploration of search space, while the excellent local search capability of the PPS (Powell's Pattern Search) method has been used for exploitation purposes. Integration of the local search procedure into the classical Jaya algorithm was carried out in three different ways, which resulted in three versions, namely, J-PPS1, J-PPS2 and J-PPS3. These three versions of the proposed hybrid Jaya–PPS approach were developed and implemented to solve the OPF problem in the standard IEEE 30-bus and IEEE 57-bus systems integrated with distributed generating units optimizing four objective functions simultaneously and IEEE 118-bus system for fuel cost minimization. The obtained results of the three versions are compared to the Dragonfly Algorithm, Grey Wolf Optimization Algorithm, Jaya Algorithm and already published results using other methods.
