The article reports that according to market data provider ACNielsen, higher pulp, energy and transportation costs have put a damper on sales last year for several consumer paper product categories. Dollar sales of the overall paper category, which include toilet tissue, paper towels, facial tissue and paper napkins, declined 1.3 percent while volume sales went down 7.2 percent in 2004. Within the raw material sector, the pulp and paper industry has not only encountered higher wood pulp prices and energy costs, but also further consolidation and restructuring. Over the first half of 2004, the average price for hardwood pulp delivered to the U.S. jumped from $505 per ton to $570 per ton, while softwood pulp soared from $580 per ton to $680 per ton.
