The increase in operating temperature contributes to improving the performance and fuel utilization efficiency of gas turbines. However, it also places thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) in a more demanding working environment, requiring higher sintering resistance and better mechanical properties. In the present study, HfO2 was introduced into the dual‐phase LaYbZr2O7 system as a doping oxide to form the LaYb(HfxZr1−x)2O7 system. The research concentrated on its phase composition, mechanical properties, and thermophysical properties. The results show that substituting Hf for Zr does not alter the dual‐phase structure of the system. The mutual inhibition between the two phases and the inherent material‐binding capability of Hf further reduce the grain size compared to pure LYZO. Additionally, the presence of Hf reduces the tendency of Frenkel defect formation and cation migration frequency, effectively inhibiting ion diffusion and thereby suppressing the densification and shrinkage trends of the material. The system retains relatively high hardness, fracture toughness, and low elastic modulus of the LYZO matrix, with a decrease in thermal conductivity and an increase in infrared reflectivity. These results suggest that Hf doping enhances the sintering resistance of LYZO material, making them promising for high‐temperature TBCs. Waste management and recycling have led to numerous studies on particleboard production. This study attempted to use milled corncob (MCC) and waste ceramic tiles (WCTs) to produce particleboard. The MCC (100−70 wt.%) and WCT (0–30 wt.%) were mixed at different ratios, mixed and compressed at a pressure of 0.25 MPa using urea formaldehyde (UF) resin as adhesive. The physicomechanical and thermal properties of the particleboards produced were investigated. The physical properties (bulk density, water absorption, and thickness swelling) improved with composite particleboard compared to the 100% MCC particleboard. The increase in WCT yielded improved density and lowered the particleboard's water absorption and thickness swelling. The mechanical tests showed that MOE values were below the recommended standard, which makes them unsuitable for structural use. However, MOR revealed values above the recommended standard. The thermal conductivity of the particleboards was reduced with increased WCT, and the required standard was found to be met. Hence, the particleboards produced are found helpful as thermal wall insulators. Based on the experiments done, sample R7 (70% MCC and 30% WCT) was considered the most preferable since it achieved the most preferable physicomechanical and thermal conductivity performance. Energy efficient buildings, propulsion components and thermal protection systems require materials with high thermal protective properties. Traditional polymer composites or ceramic materials have limited comprehensive applications because of their poor thermal protective properties or poor processability. Herein, a novel fire resistant and thermally insulating polymer/ceramic hybrid ceramifiable composite was developed based on low temperature sintering principle and foaming on fire strategy. Specifically, the influences of raw materials of low temperature ceramics, such as glass frit, phosphate, etc, on the properties of ceramifiable ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) composites were investigated. Its fire resistance and thermal insulation properties were evaluated by simulating different sintering environments. The results show that the ceramifiable composite exhibits the highest improvement in fire resistance because a crystalline phase was formed at high temperatures. Gas evolution from the thermal decomposition of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and EVA contributes to the formation of the porous structure in ceramic residues. The optimal system can resist above 1000 °C flame for 30 min without disintegration, and the temperature of the unfired side was maintained around 200 °C. AlN is regarded as a promising ceramic material for high performance structural and high temperature applications due to its superior properties such as high thermal conductivity, excellent stability and wear resistance. However, challenges remain in fabricating AlN ceramics with high strength and high thermal shock resistance. In this work, AlN/YAlO 3 composites with different YAlO 3 contents (3–10 wt%) were prepared by a simple pressureless sintering method, and the impact of YAlO 3 content on mechanical properties and thermal shock resistance of AlN/YAlO 3 composites was investigated. Results show that the grain growth of AlN is inhibited and the densification is improved with the addition of 3 wt% and 5 wt% YAlO 3. Hence, the flexural strength and fracture toughness of AlN/YAlO 3 composites are improved due to the grain refinement and compactness enhancement, and the highest value, 369 MPa and 3.84 MPa m1/2, are reached by the AlN-5 wt% YAlO 3 composite. Moreover, the thermal shock resistance was assessed through theoretical forecast and cyclic thermal shock tests over a temperature range between 1000 °C and 1600 °C. Comparing with pure AlN, the thermal stress damage resistance parameters (R IV ) of AlN/YAlO 3 composites were increased, while their residual strengths and retention ratios after 10–50 cycles of thermal shock tests maintained a higher level as well. Microstructure analysis revealed that the thermal shock resistance of AlN/YAlO 3 composites was evidently improved attributing to various strengthening mechanisms such as crack deflection, crack branching and microcrack toughening. Clays from Alhabia (Almería, Spain) have been investigated in this work using several analytical techniques: X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), thermal analysis (Thermogravimetry, TG, and its first derivative, DTG), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS). Texture characteristics (granulometry) and plasticity have been examined. The main ceramic properties (firing shrinkage, water absorption, bulk density, open porosity, flexural strength and thermal conductivity) have been determined using pressed and fired clay samples. Thus, the mineralogical, chemical, textural and ceramic features of these clays have been evidenced for the first time. The mineralogical analysis by XRD indicated that the clay samples are constituted by a mixture of chlorite and illite, as main clay minerals, being quartz and other minerals in lower relative proportion (calcite, gypsum and hematite). This finding is important because the investigations on chlorite-illite-calcitic clays are very scarce. The chemical analysis by XRF showed that silica and alumina are predominant, as expected by the mineralogy, with medium contents of calcium oxide, from calcite, and alkalis, from illite, being ∼8 and ∼5%, respectively, besides iron and titanium oxides (∼8%). The particle size analysis showed 71.76% of "clay fraction" (<2 μm) and 21.66% of silt fraction (2–50 μm). The plasticity index (Atterberg) was 14.3%, with acceptable moulding and extrusion properties. Thermal analysis by TG/DTG indicated a weight loss associated to dehydroxylation of structural water of the clay minerals and decarbonation of calcite by progressive heating. After the characterization of raw clays, the next step was the determination of ceramic properties of mixed and ground clays after firing using pressed bodies. For this purpose, two firing temperatures were selected (900 and 1100 °C) for 1 h. The examination of the resultant fired bodies indicated that porous ceramic materials (∼36% open porosity and ∼22% of water absorption capacity) can be obtained by firing at 900 ᵒC, with small variations in dimensions (<0.8% at 1100 °C). The porosity changed at relatively lower values by firing at 1100 °C (∼34–35%), being associated to the presence of decomposed calcite. Bulk density was found almost constant from 900 to 1100 °C, with a maximum value of ∼1.67 g/cm3 at 1100 °C. Flexural strength reached a maximum value of 34.47 MPa at 1100 °C for the ground sample. Finally, thermal conductivity after firing the clay bodies was found almost constant at 900 and 1100 °C (0.457 and 0.479 W/mK, respectively). Taking into account these results, the main applications of the Alhabia clays have been evaluated. These clays can be used for the fabrication of porous ceramic supports and tiles by firing at 900 °C. Firing the clays at higher temperature (1100 °C) is of great interest for the fabrication of ceramic tiles and ceramic bricks of higher flexural strength with variable porosity and practically constant in dimensions. It is economically important although at higher processing costs. h-BN is a two-dimensional ceramic material with a lamellar structure, known for its typical orientation characteristics on mechanical and thermal properties. By optimizing the size and arrangement of h-BN grains in the matrix, the anisotropic characteristics of h-BN ceramics can be fully utilized to obtain ceramic materials with high thermal conductivity or high strength. In order to study the effect of grain orientation distribution on the mechanical and thermal properties of materials, the index of orientation distribution (IOP) was used to quantitatively characterize the orientation degree of h-BN grains and analyzed the effect of h-BN grain size on material properties. The results show when the initial h-BN size is 13.50 μm, the ceramic has the highest orientation degree/-507, and the mechanical and thermal properties show obvious anisotropy. In the present work, carbon nanotube (CNT)‐reinforced alumina nanocomposite ceramics were investigated about their electrical and, for the first time in such detail, thermal conductivity. Therefore, two different alumina powders with varying CNT‐contents were processed by pressureless sintering and hot pressing to achieve CNT/alumina composite ceramics with varying porosity and CNT‐content between 0 and 5 wt.% CNTs. A significant influence of the grain size on percolation threshold of the electrical conductivity was detected. The coarser CT 3000 SG‐based ceramic showed a threshold of <0.25 wt.%, which is the lowest reported threshold in literature. Pore orientation in the hot‐pressed materials shows a significant influence on the electrical and thermal conductivity of the composite, causing anisotropic properties. Both, electrical and thermal conductivity are higher parallel to the pore structure and perpendicular to the press‐direction, respectively, with electrical conductivity being up to three times and thermal conductivity up to 30% higher parallel to the pore structure. Unlike electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity decreases significantly with increasing CNT‐content. As two influences, CNT‐content and porosity, interact, each of them was analyzed separately in order to measure the isolated influence of CNT‐content on thermal conductivity at constant porosity. It was shown, that thermal conductivity decreases considerably with increasing CNT‐content even at constant porosity, because of a disturbed crystal structure due to a finer grain structure with more grain boundaries. This behavior is contrary to the expected, and sometimes reported, effect of CNTs. The combination of an increasing CNT‐content and the related increase in porosity causes a strongly decreasing thermal conductivity of the material from 35 W/m∙K for pure alumina to 10 W/m∙K for alumina with 5 wt.% CNTs. The presented results in this and other previously published investigations from the authors show that CNT/alumina‐nanocomposites have the potential of combining outstanding mechanical properties and electrical conductivity, which can be used as high performance electrically conductive ceramic material for a wide range of applications. The high-entropy ceramic materials (Zr 0.25 Ce 0.25 Hf 0.25 Y 0.25)O 1.875 (H-0) and (Zr 0.2 Ce 0.2 Hf 0.2 Y 0.2 RE 0.2)O 1.8 (H-RE) (RE = La, Nd and Sm) with fluorite structure and homogeneous element distribution were prepared. With fluorite structure, fine grain size and high density, the H-0 and H-RE ceramics displayed low thermal conductivity, suitable thermal expansion coefficient, high hardness and fracture toughness. The effect of La, Nd and Sm on the mechanical, heat conductivity and heat expansion properties of high entropy ceramics were discussed. Epoxy composites with glass fiber reinforcement can be found in the automotive and aerospace industries. In this study, the properties of the epoxy matrix were enhanced by processing composites filled with ceramic particles of silicon carbide (SiC). At first, SiC-filled E-glass fiber-reinforced epoxy composites/sandwich structures were processed using the hand layup technique. Next, processed composites were characterized using a tensile tester and an Izod impact tester to determine the best mixing ratio of ceramic-embedded epoxy composites. The highest mechanical properties were obtained according to ASTM D638 and D256 standards. Next, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), analysis of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were carried out respectively to find out the presence of functional groups, surface morphology, crystallographic structure, glass transition temperature (Tg) and thermal/material stability of processed composites. In the end, the study elaborates that the mechanical properties of epoxy matrix composites were improved by the addition of SiC ceramic fillers, and among processed composites, 10% SiCE composite carried the highest properties, including the Tg value of 62.8 °C, 69.87 MPa for tensile strength and 57.12 kJ m−1 for impact strength. The temperature dependence of thermal conductivity and specific heat for detonated nanodiamond ceramics is investigated on specially designed experimental setups, implementing the uniaxial stationary heat flow method and the thermal relaxation method, respectively. Additionally, complementary studies with a commercial setup (Physical Property Measurement System from Quantum Design operating either in Thermal Transport or Heat Capacity Option) were performed. Two types of samples are under consideration. Both ceramics were sintered at high pressures (6–7 GPa) for 11–25 s but at different sintering temperatures, namely 1000 °C and 1600 °C. The effect of changing the sintering conditions on thermal transport is examined. In thermal conductivity κ(T), it provides an improvement up to a factor of 3 of heat flow at room temperature. The temperature dependence of κ(T) exhibits a typical polycrystalline character due to hindered thermal transport stemming from the microstructure of ceramic material but with values around 1–2 W/mK. At the lowest temperatures, the thermal conductivity is very low and increases only slightly faster than linear with temperature, proving the significant contribution of the scattering due to multiple grain boundaries. The specific heat data did not show a substantial difference between detonated nanodiamond ceramics obtained at different temperatures unlike for κ(T) results. For both samples, an unexpected upturn at the lowest temperatures is observed—most likely reminiscent of a low-T Schottky anomaly. A linear contribution to the specific heat is also present, with a value one order of magnitude higher than in canonical glasses. The determined Debye temperature is 482 (±6) K. Highly optically transparent polycrystalline fluorapatite ceramics with hexagonal crystal structures were fabricated via a liquid-phase synthesis of fluorapatite powder, followed by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The effect of sintering temperature, as observed using a thermopile, on the optical transmittance and microstructure of the ceramics was investigated in order to determine suitable sintering conditions. As a result, high optical transmittance was obtained in the SPS temperature range of 950–1100 °C. The highest optical transmittance was obtained for the ceramic sample sintered at 1000 °C, and its average grain size was evaluated at only 134 nm. The grain size dramatically increased with temperature, and the ceramics became translucent at SPS temperatures above 1200 °C. The mechanical and thermal properties of the ceramics were measured to evaluate the thermal shock parameter, which was found to be comparable to or slightly smaller than that of single-crystal fluorapatite. This transparent polycrystalline fluorapatite ceramic material should prove useful in a wide range of applications, for example as a biomaterial or optical/laser material, in the future. The way to achieve better energy efficiency in buildings is to improve their thermal insulation properties. This can be done by increasing the porosity of the ceramic materials by introducing pore-forming additives to the clay for production of lightweight ceramic panels. Compositions and properties of lightweight ceramic panels from marl clay and rice husks as lightweight aggregate were investigated. The lightweight ceramic panels from marl clay and rice husks with sizes 5x5x1 cm were produced by dry pressing and following firing at 1000°C. The influence of the amount of rice husks of 15, 30, 50 and 65 mass % on the properties of light ceramic samples fired at 1000°C has been established. Apparent density, apparent porosity, thermal conductivity and compressive strength were measured. The thermal conductivity is reduced from 1.0 W mK-1 (in ceramic panels without rice husks) to 0.6 W mK-1 (ceramic panels with 30 mass % rice husks) at standard compressive strength of 10 MPa. This quantity of rice husks is recommended for the composition of light porous ceramic materials for heat isolation in intelligent house. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Carbon‐fiber‐reinforced carbon–silicon carbide (C/C–SiC) composites were prepared by impregnating carbon fibers with ethynylphenyl‐terminated poly(silylene–acetylene) (EPTSA) as a single‐source precursor with subsequent hot pressing and pyrolysis. The structural evolution, crystallization behavior, and graphitization of bulk C–SiC ceramics, as well as their mechanical properties and ablation behavior, were investigated. The EPTSA precursor starts to transform into inorganic SiC ceramic materials at 800°C, which is characterized by an amorphous structure with weight loss, shrinkage, and densification between 800 and 1000°C. The formation of SiC crystals inhibited the growth of the graphitic structure between 1000 and 1200°C. As the temperature was raised, both graphite and SiC crystals continued to grow, and the crystalline forms became more complete. The carbon‐fiber cloth (T300CF)‐reinforced C–SiC composite (T300CF/C–SiC) prepared using polymer infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP) exhibited excellent mechanical properties. After five PIP cycles, the flexural strength, flexural modulus, and interlaminar shear strength of the T300CF/C–SiC composite reached 169 MPa, 32.5 GPa, and 9.38 MPa, respectively. Fabrication of ceramic materials containing high amount of porosity with controlled size and structure is a critical factor for various applications. In this study, porous alumina ceramics were prepared by addition of 5–30 vol% carbon black (CB) powders with different specific surface area (SSA) into the alumina matrix as a pore forming agent and application of partial sintering via spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique. After removal of CB particles from the ceramic structures, physical, mechanical, and thermal properties of the porous alumina ceramics were investigated. The open porosity level was detected between 38.48 and 59.81% depending on the type and amount of CB removed. The compressive strength of the sintered samples was measured as ∼150 MPa, which is ∼3 times higher than that of the conventionally sintered samples thanks to the strong neck formation between grains. The large pores formed by removal of CB agglomerates in case of using CB powders with SSA of 107 and 254 m2/g resulted in a change in thermal conduction mechanism from lattice vibration to thermal convection. Thermoelectric materials can easily realize energy savings by converting untapped waste heat into electricity. Unfortunately, however, the coupling of the thermoelectric parameters limits the conversion efficiency. Herein, we fabricated titanium oxide ceramic thermoelectric materials using a simple one-step solid-state reaction between TiO2 and starch at high temperature, and improved the electrical and thermal transport properties simultaneously by adjusting the amount of starch during preparation. With increasing starch, the electrical conductivity and power factor increased and the thermal conductivity decreased significantly. The samples mixed with 7 wt% starch showed rather low thermal conductivity (less than 2.0 W m−1 K−1) and a dimensionless figure of merit (ZT) close to 0.14K at 973 K. When the samples were sintered in an argon atmosphere, the starch was carbonized in situ into carbon and provided a reducing atmosphere, leading to the appearance of oxygen vacancies in the lattice of titanium oxide. The oxygen vacancies increased with increasing starch in the mixture during preparation, which resulted not only in a narrower band gap of titanium oxide but also enhanced phonon scattering. A novel negative thermal expansion (NTE) material composed of Sm0.85Sr0.15MnO3-δ was synthesized using the solid-state method. By allowing Sr2+ to partially replace Sm3+ in SmMnO3, the ceramic material Sm0.85Sr0.15MnO3-δ exhibits NTE properties between 360K and 873K, and its average negative thermal expansion coefficient was −10.08 × 10−6/K. The structure of Sm0.85Sr0.15MnO3-δ is orthogonal, the space group is pbnm, the morphology is regular, and the grain size is uniform. The results of X-ray diffraction and XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) suggest that the NTE phenomenon is related to the electron transfer of Mn ions. With the increase in temperature, Mn4+ is rapidly transformed into Mn3+, accompanied by Mn4+O6 octahedron distortion and oxygen defects. CeO 2 and Sc 2 O 3 co-stabilized ZrO 2 ceramics have attracted much attention as potential thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) materials for applications above 1300 °C. In this study, a series of Sc 0.04 Ce x Zr 0.96-x O 1.98 (SCZ, x = 0.08, 0.10, 0.12, 0.16) ceramic materials were synthesized with the solid-state method and their phase stability, microstructures and thermo-physical properties were systemically investigated by x-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectra, field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermal dilatometer, laser flash apparatus (LFA), and Vickers hardness tester. The results showed that Sc 0.04 Ce 0.12 Zr 0.84 O 1.98 (4S12CZ) and Sc 0.04 Ce 0.16 Zr 0.80 O 1.98 (4S16CZ) ceramic materials still maintained stable tetragonal phase structure after 100 h high temperature treatment at 1500 °C. SCZ had a high thermal expansion coefficient (TEC), low thermal conductivity, and high fracture toughness. The TEC of the ceramics increased with CeO 2 addition because lattice energy reduced with increasing substitution of Zr4+ by bigger Ce4+ while thermal conductivity decreased due to the increase of lattice distortion. Compared with 4S12CZ, 4S16CZ exhibited a higher fracture toughness of 6.48 ± 0.04 MPa m1/2 and showed the better anti-sintering property. Besides, the thermal conductivity, TEC and thermal cycling lifetime of 4S16CZ were optimal. This research study investigates the potential use of traditional raw materials to synthesize new ceramic composite materials that can be used in different industrial applications. The composite materials were developed through mechanical activation, carbonization, and reactive sintering techniques. Natural zeolite from Tokaj region, alumina from Motim, and sawdust were used as starting raw materials. Stoichiometric amounts of the raw materials were mixed and milled in planetary ball milling followed by uniaxially pressing to produce cylindrical ceramic discs. The produced green ceramics were then sintered in an electric laboratory kiln under an oxygen-free environment at 1200 °C. In-situ carbonization of the sawdust was confirmed via X-ray diffraction. The thermal properties were also investigated by derivatography. The produced ceramic specimens were tested on microstructural characteristics, porosity, density, and water absorption. Thermal barrier coating (TBC) system is an essential technology in many fields associated to high temperatures. The main function of these TBCs is to protect the metallic parts against high temperatures over 1000 °C. However, degradation occurs both in thermal and mechanical performances during service. Thus, understanding the underlying degradation and failure mechanisms of TBCs is significant to assess and further enhance the durability and reliability of TBCs. Regarding the durability of TBCs, this paper reviews different failures mechanisms of TBCs caused by residual stresses, phase transformations, sintering, hot corrosion attack and oxidation. Subsequently, some methods are summarized to alleviate the undesirable effects of the causes, so as to extend the lifetime of TBCs. Regarding the thermal barrier performance of TBCs, the neoteric advances to resist degradation in thermal conductivity of TBCs are reviewed. In addition, some new ceramic materials with superior intrinsic properties are introduced for ultra-high temperature applications. In brief, this review correlates the microstructure and properties of TBCs for finer interpretation and degradation-resistant design on their thermal and mechanical properties, which would benefit the advanced TBCs in future engineering applications. Solid oxide electrolytes showing proton transport are extensively studied materials, which can be utilised in different types of highly efficient energy systems such as solid oxide fuel cells, solid oxide electrolysis cells, membrane converters and sensors. Here we present the results of a study of the functional properties of LaYO3-based materials, which exhibit higher chemical stability than the more well known proton-conducting electrolytes, cerates and zirconates of alkaline earth elements. The structural, ceramic, thermal and electrical properties of La0.9Sr0.1YO3–δ have been thoroughly studied depending on the partial Y substitution with some lanthanides (10 mol.% of Yb, Dy, Ho). According to the experimental data, La0.9Sr0.1Y0.9Yb0.1O3−δ can be considered a promising alternative to the basic oxide because of its better transport properties and the fact that there are no detrimental changes in other functional characteristics. The use of ceramic cutting tools is limited due to their inherent brittleness. In this paper, metal phase Co is considered to strengthen Si 3 N 4 based ceramic tool materials. The effects of Co on room-temperature and high-temperature mechanical properties and thermal shock resistance of the material are studied. Compared with the composite without Co, the addition of Co can improve room-temperature fracture toughness of Si 3 N 4 based ceramic material at the cost of reducing its hardness. The flexural strength decreases a little in accordance with the reduced relative density. As the testing temperature increases, the fracture toughness first increases gradually and then decreases sharply while the flexural strength decreases gradually. Due to the oxidation inhibition effect, the Co-containing composite maintains higher flexural strength and fracture toughness than the Co-free composite at the specified test temperatures. The critical thermal shock temperature difference of the composite with Co is higher than that without Co, although before reaching the difference its residual bending strength is lower due to pores and thermal mismatch effect. The addition of Co can also inhibit the growth of thermal shock microcracks and improve the thermal fatigue resistance of Si 3 N 4 ceramic material. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ba(Sr 1/3 Ta 2/3)O 3 (BST) ceramic was synthesized by a solid-state reaction method. The phase stability, microstructural evolution, and mechanical and thermal properties of the BST ceramic were investigated and characterized to evaluate the potential application of BST as a top coating material for thermal barrier coatings (TBCs). The results show that BST can maintain a stable hexagonal perovskite structure up to 1600 °C. Anisotropic growth of the grains above 1400 °C was observed. Its low elastic modulus and high fracture toughness suggest a high damage tolerance for the BST ceramic. In addition, the moderate coefficient of thermal expansion and superior heat insulation capability of the BST ceramic provide this ceramic the potential to serve as a top coating material of TBCs at higher temperature. Abstract: Ultra‐high temperature ceramics (UHTCs) exhibit a unique combination of excellent properties that makes them promising candidates for applications in extreme environments. Various UHTCs are needed due to diverse harsh conditions that UHTCs are faced with in different applications. Due to structural similarity to ZrB2, possible high melting point and possible protective oxide scale formed in oxygen rich and water vapor environments, REAlB4 (RE: rare‐earth) is suggested a good candidate for UHTCs. In the present work, temperature‐dependent mechanical and thermal properties of both α‐YAlB4 (YCrB4 type, space group Pbam) and β‐YAlB4 (ThMoB4 type, space group Cmmm) were investigated by first principles calculations in combination with quasi‐harmonic approach. Due to the structural similarity between α‐YAlB4 and β‐YAlB4, their properties are very similar to each other, which are approximately transverse isotropic with properties in (001) plane being almost the same and differing from properties out of (001) plane. The results reveal that resistance to normal strain in (001) plane (~460 GPa) is higher than that along [001] direction (~320 GPa) and thermal expansion in (001) plane (~10 × 10−6 K−1) is lower than that along [001] direction (~17 × 10−6 K−1), which is because the stiff boron networks are parallel to (001) plane. The average thermal expansion coefficient is around 12 × 10−6 K−1, which is fairly high among UHTCs and compatible with metallic frameworks. The combination of high thermal expansion coefficient and protective oxidation scale forming ability suggest that REAlB4 is promising for practical applications not only as high‐temperature structural ceramic but also as oxidation resistant coating for alloys. CaMnO 3 -based materials are very attractive among n-type thermoelectric oxides for high-temperature applications when they are appropriately doped. The main drawback of these materials is the cost associated to the necessary rare earth cations. This work aims decreasing the amount of these materials through a partial substitution of Ca 2+ by an equimolar mixture of K + and Yb 3+ , Ca 1-x (K 0.5 Yb 0.5 ) x MnO 3 , with x = 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, and 0.20. XRD studies have confirmed that the thermoelectric phase is the major one in all samples. Microstructure has shown the formation of large crystals, and an increasing porosity when the substitution is raised. This evolution has been confirmed through density measurements. Electrical resistivity has been drastically decreased for the 0.10 substituted samples, compared with the 0.05 ones, slightly increasing for higher substitution. On the other hand, absolute Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity are lower when the substitution is raised. The best ZT values have been achieved for the 0.10 substituted samples, which are around the typical reported in the literature for higher doping level. These results clearly point out to a decrease of the necessary rare earth dopant content to achieve similar performances in CaMnO 3 ceramics, which is of the main economic significance for their industrial production. Са 3 (VO 4 ) 2 -based compositions are considered as promising multifunctional materials combining ferroelectric, optical nonlinear, and Ca 2+ -ion conductive properties. Their ferroelectric Curie points stretch from minimal for β -Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 -type compounds temperatures of about 800 K to very high. Investigated in this paper lead substitution for calcium is as a factor controlling ferroelectricity, ionic-conductivity and non-linear optical activity in Ca 3 (VO 4 ) 2 -based materials. Polar phase containing powders and ceramics in Ca 10.5- x Pb x (VO 4 ) 7 system are synthesized for 0 ≤ x ≤ 9.5 by the solid state method, and structurally characterized with X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Dielectric properties, differential thermal analysis and second harmonic generation (SHG) evidence that Ca 10.5- x Pb x (VO 4 ) 7 solid solution (0 ≤ x ≤ 4.5) belongs to whitlockite-type ferroelectrics. SHG activity strongly increases with x up to its maximum at x = 4.5, where it has a record value among all studied before Ca 3 ( X O 4 ) 2 -related compounds ( X = P,V). Ferroelectric Curie temperatures of Ca 3 (VO 4 ) 2 drops from its known value T c = 1368 K ( x = 0) to 770 K ( x = 4.5). Crystal symmetry at T c changes from R 3 c to R 3 ¯ c . After this, one more phase transition to the symmetry R 3 ¯ m takes place, its temperature bringing down from 1387 K ( x = 0) to 804 K ( x = 4.5). Ferroelectric and non-ferroelectric phase transitions in the Са 10.5- x Pb x (VO 4 ) 7 are separated by a broad interval Δ T = 20–50 K and both classified as first-order transformations going in the sequence: R 3 c ↔ R 3 ¯ c ↔ R 3 ¯ m . Structures of Са 10.5- x Pb x (VO 4 ) 7 compositions with x = 0.5–4 were refined by the Rietveld method and peculiarities of the Pb 2+ cations distribution in the M 1 - M 3 and M 4 sites of β -Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 -type structure are discussed regarding the optical nonlinear, ferroelectric and ion-conductive properties. Manifold increased Ca 2+ - ion conductivity of Са 10.5- x Pb x (VO 4 ) 7 in vicinity of 1000 K at x = 4–4.5 in combination with their ferroelectric and optical nonlinear properties extends applicability of ion-exchange technologies to new promising materials. Aerogel glazing units (AGUs) is a high-performance building glazing which can effectively reduce energy consumption due to its thermal and optical performance. In this paper, the effect on thermal and optical properties of AGUs with different particle sizes and filling thicknesses were investigated. The results indicated that visible light transmittance and solar direct transmittance of AGUs palpably increased as the particle size increased from 0.41mm to 0.93mm, while it lightly changed as the particle size continued to increase from 0.93mm. The heat transfer coefficient decreased by about 15% when the particle size was reduced from 2.7mm to 0.41mm. In conclusion, the increase of the thickness of aerogel can effectively decrease visible light transmittance, solar direct transmittance and heat transfer coefficient. Low softening point temperature glassy frit, reinforcing silica, wollastonite and dicumyl peroxide were incorporated into ethylene-propylene-diene (EPDM) rubber matrix in different amounts in order to obtain ceramifiable composites. Kinetics of vulcanization of the mixes was measured. Mechanical properties, micromorphology, thermal properties and combustibility of the vulcanizates were studied as well as compression strength of the ceramic residue obtained after heat treatment. In this study, the PPS/MWCNTs/AlN composite was prepared with poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS), covalent functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (fMWCNTs), and aluminum nitride (AlN) via melt-blending techniques. The AlN is a fascinating non-oxidizing ceramic material having the highest thermal conductivity among the ceramic materials. In order to introduce the functional groups on the surface of the AlN particles, a silane coupling agent was used as it is able to graft with the functional groups on the covalent functionalized MWCNTs. The silanization reaction of the AlN was confirmed qualitatively and quantitatively by FT-IR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy), and XPS (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy). The grafting reaction of the AlN particles on the MWCNTs was confirmed using UV-Vis (Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy), FE-SEM (Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy) and FE-TEM (Field-Emission Transmission Electron Microscopy) images. The grafting reaction was accomplished by observing the change of the transmittance, the morphology of the AlN particle bonded to the MWCNTs. For the morphological changes of the fractured surface of the PPS/MWCNTs/AlN composites by FE-SEM, the hybrid filler was homogeneously dispersed on the PPS matrix when the AlN particle was grafted on the MWCNTs. The homogeneous distribution of the hybrid filler acts as a heat transfer path, which led the higher thermal properties, such as thermal conductivity, thermal resistance, and melting temperature than those of not grafted MWCNTs. Recently, anisotropic heat dissipation and its management have drawn attention as a promising technique for highly integrated electrical devices. Among many potentially challenging materials such as carbon nanotube, graphene, metal particles, and inorganic ceramics commonly used for high thermally conductive fillers in a composite form, nanoscale ceramic fillers are considered ideal candidates due to their thermal conductivity, electrical insulation, and low thermal expansion coefficient. However, enhancing the thermal conductivity of a randomly dispersed ceramic-polymer composite is limited by its discontinuous filler contact and thermal expansion coefficient mismatch. Thus, recent research has focused on how to assemble and generate highly networked filler contacts to make effective pathways for heat flow, with minimized concentration of the filler in the composite. In this review, we will introduce several essential strategies to assemble fillers with a two- or three-dimensional networked composite for highly enhanced anisotropic heat dissipation. Novel ZrO 2 -fiber-reinforced porous Y 2 SiO 5 ceramic nanocomposites were fabricated by a simple pressureless sintering process. Y 2 SiO 5 nanoparticles were prepared by a sol-gel method, and the effects of sintering temperature and ZrO 2 fiber content on the microstructure, thermal properties, and mechanical properties of the porous Y 2 SiO 5 nanocomposites were studied. The mechanical properties and thermal conductivity of porous ZrO 2f /Y 2 SiO 5 nanocomposites were improved substantially with the introduction of ZrO 2 fibers. Compared with the specimens without added fibers, the composites with 10 vol% ZrO 2 fibers exhibited the optimum strengthening effects, including a high bending strength (i.e., 65.7 MPa), a low thermal conductivity (i.e., 0.55 W/(m·K)) and good machinability. A new lightweight and thermal insulating material was successfully prepared by impregnating Al 2 O 3 –SiO 2 aerogel into a porous mullite–zirconia fiber network with a quasi-layered microstructure. The microstructures, thermal and mechanical properties of the porous mullite–zirconia ceramics were investigated before and after the impregnating of Al 2 O 3 –SiO 2 aerogel. It was observed that the mullite and zirconia fibers combined well with aerogels. Compared with fibrous porous mullite-zirconia ceramics, the Al 2 O 3 –SiO 2 aerogel/porous mullite–zirconia composite exhibited higher compressive strength (i.e. 1.36 MPa in the z direction) and lower thermal conductivity (i.e. 0.052 W/(m·K)). The present work provides an efficient way to fabricate highly porous ceramics with high strength and ultra-low thermal conductivity, which find potential use in high-temperature thermal insulation materials. A novel lightweight needled carbon fibre felt/phenolic resin (NCF-PR) aerogel composite was fabricated through vacuum impregnation using NCF as matrix and PR aerogels as filler. The PR aerogels was synthesized through polymerization-induced phase separation (PIPS), accompanied by solvent exchange and ambient pressure drying, from a resin mixture of PR with ethylene glycol (EG) as the porogen and hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) as the catalyst. A homogeneous microstructure without macroscopic cracking and agglomeration was achieved in the composite, and the macropores between the fibres in the NCF were fully and uniformly filled by PR aerogels with high porosity and with large amounts of mesopores. The resulting NCF-PR aerogel composites exhibit low densities between 0.270 and 0.370 g/cm 3 , relatively high compressive strength, ranging from 0.83 to 11.02 MPa, and low thermal conductivities of 0.093–0.230 W/(mK) at room temperature. The thermal ablative properties of the aerogel composite were studied under arc jet conditions at a heat flux of 1.5 MW/m 2 for 33 s. The ablation results demonstrate that the NCF-PR aerogel composite could deliver good thermal ablative and insulative properties (linear ablation rates as low as 0.029 mm/s and internal temperature peaks below 90 °C at 38 mm in-depth position as the surface temperature exceeded 2000 °C). Therefore, this lightweight carbon/phenolic composite is an excellent heat-insulation and thermal-protection material with applications in the fields of energy-saving and aerospace. In view of spacecraft re-entry applications into planetary atmospheres, hybrid thermal protection systems based on cork and ceramic matrix composites are investigated. Joints of NORCOAT LIÈGE cork with C/C SiC ceramic matrix composite were fabricated using a) high temperature commercial inorganic adhesives and b) in-situ polymerization of the cork on top of the CMC. Mechanical shear tests under ambient conditions and in liquid nitrogen are carried out. The ultimate shear strength of all the adhesive joints at room temperature varies between 0.52 and 0.78 MPa and is similar to that of the in-situ joints. At liquid nitrogen temperature the shear strength is enhanced by up to 80%, but the ultimate shear strain decreases up to 55%. Korea has developed an advanced reduced-activation alloy (ARAA) as a structural material for helium-cooled ceramic reflector test blanket module (HCCR-TBM) applications. The present paper describes the history of alloy development and the properties of ARAA, which has been produced at a 5 t scale using vacuum induction melting and electro-slag re-melting methods. ARAA is a 9Cr–1.2W based ferritic–martensitic steel with 0.01 wt.% Zr. The mechanical properties, thermal properties and physical and magnetic properties of ARAA show similar temperature dependencies to those observed for Eurofer 97. However, ARAA exhibits a much longer creep–rupture time than conventional RAFM steel, which suggests a positive effect on Zr addition. The enhanced creep strength of ARAA by the addition of Zr is attributed to the reduced temperature-dependence of the yield strength. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dielectric properties of x (Na 0.5 K 0.5 )NbO 3 –(1− x )BaTiO 3 ( x =0.00 and 0.06) specimens were investigated in terms of changes in local atomic structure, according to the phase transition by elevating the overall temperature. A 0.06(Na 0.5 K 0.5 )NbO 3 –0.94BaTiO 3 (NKN–BT) specimen exhibited enhanced temperature stability along with an increased dielectric constant. The degree of reduction in tetragonality ( c / a ) at the Curie temperature was smaller in NKN–BT compared to that in pure BaTiO 3 , as calculated by Rietveld refinement. From a comparison of the pre-edge region in the Ti K -edge, it was determined that the off-center displacement of the Ti atom was also raised to 13.4% through NKN substitution, with a change in local orientation from the [001] to the [111] directions. The substitution by NKN, which has a different ionic radius and electrical charge compared with BaTiO 3 , causes structural distortion of the TiO 6 octahedra in the NKN–BT lattice, resulting in local polarization. Spark plasma sintering (SPS) has been employed to consolidate a micron-sized zirconium carbide (ZrC) powder. ZrC pellets with a variety of relative densities are obtained under different processing parameters. The densification kinetics of ZrC powders subjected to conventional hot pressing and SPS are comparatively studied by applying similar heating and loading profiles. Due to the lack of electric current assistance, the conventional hot pressing appears to impose lower strain rate sensitivity and higher activation energy values than those which correspond to the SPS processing. A finite element simulation is used to analyze the temperature evolution within the volume of ZrC specimens subjected to SPS. The control mechanism for grain growth during the final SPS stage is studied via a recently modified model, in which the grain growth rate dependence on porosity is incorporated. The constant pressure specific heat and thermal conductivity of the SPS-processed ZrC are determined to be higher than those reported for the hot-pressed ZrC and the benefits of applying SPS are indicated accordingly. Aurivillius polycrystalline Dy substituted SrBiTaO ceramics were prepared using solid state reaction method, with general formula SrDyBiTaO (x = 0.0, 0.025, 0.05, 0.075, 0.1). X-Ray diffraction patterns reveal a single phase orthorhombic (Aam) structure for x ≤ 0.05 composition and a secondary phase is obtained for higher compositions. Scanning electron microscope figures show well defined anisotropic grains in all compositions. Temperature dependent dielectric study shows that the maximum dielectric constant increases and transition temperature decreases with increase in Dy content. The dielectric loss decreases with increase in Dy content may be due to reduction in oxygen vacancy. The diffusivity decreases up to x ≤ 0.05 obtained from modified Curie-Weiss law and then increases for higher doping. The hysteresis loop shows enhanced ferroelectric properties with Dy content. La 2 Ti 2 O 7 ceramic samples were prepared via conventional solid-state reaction route. The dielectric properties of La 2 Ti 2 O 7 were investigated as functions of temperature (113–1073 K) and frequency (100 Hz–1 MHz). Our results revealed that La 2 Ti 2 O 7 ceramics exhibit intrinsic dielectric response with a dielectric constant of ∼57 in the temperature range below 250 K. Three thermally activated dielectric relaxations were observed when the temperature higher than 250 K. The low-temperature relaxations R1 with the activation energy of 0.38 eV is found to be a polaron relaxation results from hopping holes. The high-temperature relaxations R2 and R3 are related to the conduction progress associated with the singly and doubly ionized oxygen vacancies, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to investigate the thermal behaviour of cement-asbestos wastes and to determine whether it is possible to use them in the production of building ceramics, e.g. clinker bricks. In the first part of the research, the process of cement-asbestos thermal decomposition was studied. This asbestos material contained the chrysotile and crocidolite variety of asbestos. The results of this study allowed to determine the lowest temperature of thermal treatment that provides asbestos detoxification. The second part of the paper presents the results of a preliminary study on using previously calcined cement-asbestos wastes as an additive to ceramic masses typical for clinker bricks. Green compacts containing various amounts of cement-asbestos wastes were sintered and then ceramic properties were determined. The results of the study indicate that calcined asbestos-containing materials can be used as one of the secondary raw materials in the production of clinker ceramics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The electrical and thermal properties of SiC ceramics containing 1 vol% nitrides ( BN, AlN or TiN) were investigated with 2 vol% Y2 O3 addition as a sintering additive. The AlN-added SiC specimen exhibited an electrical resistivity (3.8 × 101 Ω·cm) that is larger by a factor of ~102 compared to that (1.3 × 10−1 Ω·cm) of a baseline specimen sintered with Y2 O3 only. On the other hand, BN- or TiN-added SiC specimens exhibited resistivity that is lower than that of the baseline specimen by a factor of 10−1. The addition of 1 vol% BN or AlN led to a decrease in the thermal conductivity of SiC from 178 W/m·K (baseline) to 99 W/m·K or 133 W/m·K, respectively. The electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity of the TiN-added SiC specimen were 1.6 × 10−2 Ω·cm and 211 W/m·K at room temperature, respectively. LiZnTiO (LZT) microwave dielectric ceramics prepared by reaction-sintering process were investigated. LiCO, ZnO and TiO powders were mixed, pressed and sintered directly into ceramic pellets without any calcination stage involved. Pure LZT phase was obtained after sintering at temperatures above 1,100 °C for 2 h. LZT ceramic with the maximum bulk density of 3.81 g/cm (96.2 % of the theoretical value) and excellent microwave dielectric properties of ɛ = 25.8, Q × f = 78,216 GHz and τ = −10.5 ppm/°C was obtained after sintering at 1,100 °C for 2 h. Boride ceramics are materials of choice in extreme conditions. Among them, titanium borides have many applications due to their high hardnesses and melting points. The behavior of titanium borides may not be easily studied at very high pressures and temperatures by experimental means. Alternatively, molecular dynamics (MD) is a powerful computational tool to investigate the desired behavior of materials in certain conditions. In this study, we develop an interatomic potential for the Ti B system based on the second nearest-neighbor modified embedded atom method (2NN-MEAM) formulation. With the developed potential, MD simulations reproduce many physical, mechanical, and thermal properties of titanium borides with good accuracy. As an application of the developed potential, a series of nanoindentation simulations is also conducted to investigate the temperature dependence of the nanohardness of TiB 2 up to 1500 K. The results illustrate a linear dependence between nanohardness and temperature. Zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) is one of the ceramic materials with high potential in many areas of modern technologies. ZrO2 doped with 8 wt.% (~4.5 mol%) Y2O3 is a commercial powder used for obtaining stabilized zirconia materials (8 wt.% YSZ) with high temperature resistance and good ionic conductivity. During recent years it was reported the co-doping with multiple rare earth elements has a significant influence on the thermal, mechanical and ionic conductivity of zirconia, due complex grain size segregation and enhanced oxygen vacancies mobility. Different methods have been proposed to synthesize these materials. Here, we present the hydrothermal synthesis of 8 wt.% (~4.5 mol%) YSZ co-doped with 4, 6 and 8 wt.% La2O3, Nd2O3, Sm2O3 and Gd2O3 respectively. The crystalline phases formed during their thermal treatment in a large temperature range were analyzed by X-ray diffraction. The evolution of phase composition vs. thermal treatment temperatures shows as a major trend the formation at temperatures >1000 °C of a cubic solid solutions enriched in the rare earth oxide used for co-doping as major phase. The first results on the thermal conductivities and impedance measurements on sintered pellets obtained from powders co-doped with 8 wt.% Y and 6% Ln (Ln = La, Nd, Sm and Gd) and the corresponding activation energies are presented and discussed. A reverse-flow reactor enables the pyrolysis of hydrocarbons at temperatures up to 2000 °C to high value petrochemical products. Materials in the reactor hot zone, exposed to such extreme temperatures, are also subject to rapid oxidative cycling over a period of several seconds between a regeneration (heat addition) step that is mildly oxidizing and a pyrolysis (cracking) step that is strongly carburizing. This paper addresses the performance of a class of zirconate ceramics such as BaZrO, SrZrO, and LaZrO that have been tested in a laboratory scale reverse-flow reactor and compares the results with thermodynamic predictions. It is observed that zirconate ceramics degrade by decomposition to zirconia and the second oxide, vaporization of the second oxide, and ceramic dusting corrosion of zirconia that involves carbide-oxide inter-conversion and carbon precipitation. The pyrolysis reaction promotes carbon deposition and carburization of zirconia leading to the formation of a non-protective porous carbide layer. The regeneration reaction converts the carbide layer partially back to oxide while also oxidizing away some of the deposited carbon. Repeated cycles of pyrolysis and regeneration steps eventually result in the breakup of the bulk zirconate ceramic structure into powder or dust. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study describes the microstructure development as dense tantalum carbide (TaC), which is subjected to extreme temperature environments (3,000 °C) in the presence of oxygen. These are conditions that structural materials are expected to experience in hypersonic aero-propulsion applications. The conditions produce molten oxide which may provide a temporary resistance to rapid oxidation and may go some way to repair thermal shock cracks, however, at the same time the liquid is observed to attack the dense ceramic both chemically and mechanically. A reaction mechanism is suggested which involves dissolution of TaC in the oxide melt and a two step oxidation; first the reaction of TaC with oxygen to form Ta(O,C) and TaO, resulting in dissolved dissociated carbon, followed by the reaction of dissolved carbon with oxygen to produce gas. This microstructural analysis of one of the candidate ultra-high temperature ceramic materials for hypersonic flight provides new insight into the mechanism of TaC oxidation and the role of the liquid oxide layer in acting not only as a protective layer to further oxidation, as is commonly reported, but also as a dynamic component that promotes erosion of the TaC surface and is a source of further oxygenation of the TaC surface. If the formation of the liquid phase can be better controlled and the reaction of the liquid phase with the matrix be slowed and stabilised, then the formation of a liquid phase at the surface of TaC may provide a key to designing materials that can withstand the rigours of hypersonic flight. In this work, Al2O3- Al2O3 and Al2O3- Ti solder joints intended for space applications were realized by applying metallic multilayers both on Ti and on polycrystalline Al2O3 substrates to ensure wetting during the soldering process. The eutectic Au-12Ge (wt%) alloy with a melting point of 361°C was used as solder material and two different multilayer systems on the ceramic ( Cr-Ni/ Ti-W/ Au, Ti/ Pt/ Au) were investigated. The influence of different thermal pretreatments of the Al2O3 plates on the multilayer properties, the interface reactions during soldering and the mechanical properties were studied using Glow-Discharge Optical Emission Spectroscopy ( GDOES), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy ( XPS), Scanning Electron Microscopy ( SEM) and a shear test device. It is shown that joints with a good quality can be produced at a soldering temperature of 400°C, whereas their properties and fracture behavior are strongly dependent on the metallization layer properties and the thermal pretreatments. The (1 − x)PbZrO3-xPb(Yb1/2Nb1/2)O3 (PZ-PYbN) ceramics, with the compositions, x = 0.00-0.50, were prepared by the wolframite precursor method. The crystal structure and electrical and thermal properties of PbZrO3 ceramic were investigated as a function of the composition, x, using X-ray diffraction, dielectric spectroscopy, hysteresis measurement and differential scanning calorimetry techniques. The results indicated that the solid solution, PZ-PYbN, changed from orthorhombic to rhombohedral symmetry when the amount of PYbN increased. The pyrochlore phase identified as Yb/Nb mixed compound was observed at the composition, x ≥ 0.2. For the compositions, x = 0.00-0.10, ceramics showed a sharp phase transition from AFE to PE. Furthermore, the intermediate FE phase was absent from the PZ-PYbN system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
