This article analyses anthropometric forms used in three different Dutch contexts around 1900: an expedition in Dutch New Guinea, the Dutch police and prison registration system, where ‘Bertillonage’ was used to identify recidivist criminals, and a state-owned reform school for girls. The authors identify the loose form as an innovative ‘paper technology’ within anthropometry that opened up entirely new ways of linking bodies to identities and was critically important in inscribing bodies into knowledge systems. The article demonstrates how this crucial innovation within anthropometry took shape in practice. In order to show the techniques through which the inscription of bodies into knowledge systems took place, the article demonstrates how the forms organized, standardized and directed measuring practices and prepared the data for further use in filing systems. Moreover, it draws attention to the tension between the forms’ potential and actual practices. The article concludes by considering the ways these forms were filed and used as ‘data’ by judicial authorities, child protection professionals and racial and criminological scientists, each of whom produced different forms of ‘paper identity’ and whose anthropometric practices enacted different bodies.

Background Mobile health (mHealth) tools may be useful platforms for dietary monitoring and assessment. Objective This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a mobile dietary self-monitoring app for weight loss versus a paper-based diary among adults with a BMI of 23 kg/m2 or above. Methods A total of 33 men and 17 women aged 18-39 years participated in a 6-week randomized controlled trial. We randomly assigned participants to one of two groups: (1) a smartphone app group (n=25) or (2) a paper-based diary group (n=25). The smartphone app group recorded foods and dietary supplements that they consumed and received immediate dietary feedback using Well-D, a dietary self-monitoring app developed by our team. The paper-based diary group was instructed to record foods or supplements that they consumed using a self-recorded diary. The primary outcomes were weight, BMI, waist circumference, body fat mass, and skeletal muscle mass. We also examined changes in nutrient intake, including energy, carbohydrate, protein, fat, dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals, using 3-day 24-hour recalls. Differences in changes between the two groups were analyzed using independent t tests or Wilcoxon Mann-Whitney tests. All of the data were analyzed using intent-to-treat analysis. Results The mean number of days recorded was 18.5 (SD 14.1) for the app group and 15.5 (SD 10.1) for the paper-based diary group. The differences in changes in weight, BMI, and waist circumference were not significantly different between the app group and paper-based diary group (P=.33, .34, and .70, respectively). Similarly, changes in body fat mass or skeletal muscle mass did not differ between the two groups (P=.71 and .054, respectively). Although energy intake was reduced in both groups, there was no significant difference in changes in energy intake between the two groups (P=.98). Conclusions There were no differences in changes in anthropometric measures and nutrient intake between the app group and the paper-based diary group. Both mobile dietary self-monitoring app and paper-based diary may be useful for improving anthropometric measures. BackgroundThere is growing interest in the use of information communication technologies to treat obesity. An intervention delivered by smartphone could be a convenient, potentially cost-effective, and wide-reaching weight management strategy. Although there have been studies of texting-based interventions and smartphone applications (apps) used as adjuncts to other treatments, there are currently no randomized controlled trials (RCT) of a stand-alone smartphone application for weight loss that focuses primarily on self-monitoring of diet and physical activity. ObjectiveThe aim of this pilot study was to collect acceptability and feasibility outcomes of a self-monitoring weight management intervention delivered by a smartphone app, compared to a website and paper diary. MethodsA sample of 128 overweight volunteers were randomized to receive a weight management intervention delivered by smartphone app, website, or paper diary. The smartphone app intervention, My Meal Mate (MMM), was developed by the research team using an evidence-based behavioral approach. The app incorporates goal setting, self-monitoring of diet and activity, and feedback via weekly text message. The website group used an existing commercially available slimming website from a company called Weight Loss Resources who also provided the paper diaries. The comparator groups delivered a similar self-monitoring intervention to the app, but by different modes of delivery. Participants were recruited by email, intranet, newsletters, and posters from large local employers. Trial duration was 6 months. The intervention and comparator groups were self-directed with no ongoing human input from the research team. The only face-to-face components were at baseline enrollment and brief follow-up sessions at 6 weeks and 6 months to take anthropometric measures and administer questionnaires. ResultsTrial retention was 40/43 (93%) in the smartphone group, 19/42 (55%) in the website group, and 20/43 (53%) in the diary group at 6 months. Adherence was statistically significantly higher in the smartphone group with a mean of 92 days (SD 67) of dietary recording compared with 35 days (SD 44) in the website group and 29 days (SD 39) in the diary group (P

Dietary fibre is important for regular laxation and reduces chronic disease risk. The National Health and Medical Research Council outlines daily fibre intake targets, yet the proportion of the population that meets these targets is unknown. Using the 2011–2012 National Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey, we profiled fibre intake among Australian children and adults. Data from one-day dietary recalls were analysed (n = 12,153, ≥2 years) as well as demographic and anthropometric factors. The median fibre intake was 18.2 g (interquartile range [IQR] 13.2–25.0) in children and 20.7 g (IQR 14.3–28.7) in adults. We found that 42.3% (95% CI 40.5–44.1%) of children and 28.2% (95% CI 27.3–29.1%) of adults met the Adequate Intake (AI), and less than 20% of adults met the Suggested Dietary Target (SDT) to reduce the risk of chronic disease. Older children (aged 14–18 years), girls, young adults (19–30 years), males, and those of lower socio-economic status were less likely to meet the AI (p < 0.001). Those with a higher energy intake were more likely to meet the AI. Anthropometric measures were not associated with fibre intake or the likelihood of meeting the AI. Fibre is a nutrient of concern in Australian diets, with most children and adults falling short of recommendations. Adolescents, girls, young adults, men, and those of lower socio-economic status were less likely to meet the recommendations and may benefit most from public health interventions.

International audience; Online data collection could advantageously replace paper-and-pencil questionnaires in epidemiological studies by reducing the logistic burden, the cost and the duration of data processing. However, there is a need for studies comparing these new instruments to traditional ones. Our objective was to compare the web-based version of the NutriNet-Santé self-administered anthropometric questionnaire to the paper-based version. The questionnaire included 17 questions divided into subquestions (55 variables in all) dealing with height, weight, hip and waist circumferences, weight history, restrictive diet and weight self-perception. Both versions of the questionnaire were filled out by 147 volunteers (paper version first, = 76, or web-based version first, = 71) participating in the SU.VI.MAX (“Supplémentation en VItamines Minéraux et AntioXydants”) cohort (age-range: 49–75 years; men: 46.3%). At the end of the test, subjects filled in a “satisfaction” questionnaire giving their opinions and feelings about each version. Agreement was assessed by intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) and kappas. We also quantified the number of errors inherent in the paper version. Agreement between the two versions was high. ICCs ranged from 0.86 to 1.00. Kappas ranged from 0.69 to 1.00 for comparable variables. A total of 82 data entry mistakes (1.5% of total entries), 60 missing values (1.1%), 57 inconsistent values (1.1%) and 3 abnormal values (0.1%) were counted in the paper version (non-existent in the web-based version due to integrated controls). The web-based version was preferred by 92.2% of users. In conclusion, the quality of information provided by the web-based anthropometric questionnaire used in the NutriNet-Santé Study was equal to, or better than, that of the paper version, with substantial logistic and cost advantages.

Many position stands and review papers have refuted the myths associated with resistance training (RT) in children and adolescents. With proper training methods, RT for children and adolescents can be relatively safe and improve overall health. The objective of this position paper and review is to highlight research and provide recommendations in aspects of RT that have not been extensively reported in the pediatric literature. In addition to the well-documented increases in muscular strength and endurance, RT has been used to improve function in pediatric patients with cystic fibrosis and cerebral palsy, as well as pediatric burn victims. Increases in children’s muscular strength have been attributed primarily to neurological adaptations due to the disproportionately higher increase in muscle strength than in muscle size. Although most studies using anthropometric measures have not shown significant muscle hypertrophy in children, more sensitive measures such as magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound have suggested hypertrophy may occur. There is no minimum age for RT for children. However, the training and instruction must be appropriate for children and adolescents, involving a proper warm-up, cool-down, and appropriate choice of exercises. It is recommended that low- to moderate-intensity resistance exercise should be done 2–3 times/week on non-consecutive days, with 1–2 sets initially, progressing to 4 sets of 8–15 repetitions for 8–12 exercises. These exercises can include more advanced movements such as Olympic-style lifting, plyometrics, and balance training, which can enhance strength, power, co-ordination, and balance. However, specific guidelines for these more advanced techniques need to be established for youth. In conclusion, an RT program that is within a child’s or adolescent’s capacity and involves gradual progression under qualified instruction and supervision with appropriately sized equipment can involve more advanced or intense RT exercises, which can lead to functional (i.e., muscular strength, endurance, power, balance, and co-ordination) and health benefits.

In order to detect an indicator of the onset of pubertal spurt, the DHEAS serie levels were correlated with age, weight, height, skeletal maturity stage (Hägg and Taranger) and sexual maturity (Tanner and, Prader). 33 patients; 18 males and 15 females, between 8 and 12 years old were studied. Healthy children in Tanner I sexual maturity stage was the research criteria for inclusion. The data were taken every six months during three years (2000-2002). The behavior of the anthropometric variables of the general population was published in a previous paper. In the group of males, we did not found any significant correlation between the seric levels of DHEAS with the studied variables, except for the weight at the beginning of the study. In the female group, a correlation was found with the ulnar sesamoid although not in the long term, and with the weight in the middle of the study. However, none of these associations and correlations confirmed our initial hypothesis because the correlations found were considerate such as isolated facts. RESUMEN: Con el fin de detectar un indicador del inicio del brote puberal se correlacionaron los niveles séricos de DHEAS con la edad, el peso, la talla, el estadio de desarrollo esquelético (Hägg y Taranger) y el de la maduración sexual (Tanner y orquidiometría de Prader). Se estudiaron 33 pacientes, 18 de sexo masculino y 15 de sexo femenino, entre los 8 y los 11 años de edad; el criterio de inclusión fue el de niños sanos con un estadio de maduración sexual de Tanner I. La toma de muestras se realizó cada seis meses durante tres años (2000-2002). El comportamiento de las variables antropométricas de la población general se publicó en el artículo de IGF-1 previo. En el grupo de niños no se observó ninguna correlación significativa entre el nivel de DHEAS con ninguna variable, excepto para el peso al inicio del estudio. En el grupo de niñas, la correlación se dio con el sesamoideo, aunque no fue a largo plazo y con el peso en la mitad del estudio. Sin embargo, ninguna de estas asociaciones y correlaciones confirma nuestra hipótesis inicial, ya que todas estas asociaciones fueron aisladas.

Aim: Our goal is to estimate the prevalence of obesity, glucose intolerance, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and metabolic syndrome among urban children and adolescents aged 6–19 years and to raise awareness about noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) among school children in Chennai, South India. Methods: The Obesity Reduction and Awareness and Screening of Noncommunicable Diseases through Group Education project plans to reach out to children and adolescents using two approaches: The school and the community approach. The school approach aims to reach out to a representative sample of approximately 20,000 urban school children and adolescents, aged 6–19 years, covering 50 schools from all parts of Chennai. Anthropometric measures will include height, weight, waist, body fat, and blood pressure. Data on demographics, family Profile, behavioral aspects, physical activity, and food pattern will be obtained by using a validated questionnaire. Awareness about metabolic NCDs like obesity and diabetes will be increased by educating the children and adolescents about healthy lifestyles. Through the community approach, 2000 children and adolescents from randomly selected residential colonies in Chennai will be screened for obesity, glucose intolerance, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and metabolic syndrome. Expected Outcomes: Awareness about NCDs will be increased among children and their parents in Chennai. This study will also provide valuable epidemiological data on obesity, glucose intolerance, dyslipidemia, hypertension and metabolic syndrome in children and adolescents in urban India.

This paper discusses the features of study design and methodological considerations for constructing reference centile charts for attained size, growth, and velocity charts with a focus on human growth charts used during pregnancy. Recent systematic reviews of pregnancy dating, fetal size, and newborn size charts showed that many studies aimed at constructing charts are still conducted poorly. Important design features such as inclusion and exclusion criteria, ultrasound quality control measures, sample size determination, anthropometric evaluation, gestational age estimation, assessment of outliers, and chart presentation are seldom well addressed, considered, or reported. Many of these charts are in clinical use today and directly affect the identification of at‐risk newborns that require treatment and nutritional strategies. This paper therefore reiterates some of the concepts previously identified as important for growth studies, focusing on considerations and concepts related to study design, sample size, and methodological considerations with an aim of obtaining valid reference or standard centile charts. We discuss some of the key issues and provide more details and practical examples based on our experiences from the INTERGROWTH‐21st Project. We discuss the statistical methodology and analyses for cross‐sectional studies and longitudinal studies in a separate article in this issue.

Summary Background and aims The COVID-19 pandemic has caused many changes in the nutritional care process as a result of the social distancing measures imposed, especially in the assessment of nutritional status, in which obtaining anthropometric measures is necessary. Methods Critical review of the international anthropometry literature, in the light of the recent scientific evidence of COVID-19. Results This paper presents recommendations for anthropometric assessment of the nutritional status of people in ambulatory settings for both remote and in-person assessment. The most appropriate measures to the current pandemic scenario are also discussed, in order to contribute to the monitoring of nutritional status and to minimize health impacts.results Conclusion When sanitary conditions cannot be guaranteed during in-person encounters or when the person cannot attend the office of the professional, the remote anthropometric assessment can be a useful strategy to nutritional surveillance.conclusions

Background Adequate footwear fit is critical in preventing diabetes-related foot ulcers. One important element is the toe gap, the difference between foot length and internal footwear length available to the foot. We summarised the literature on toe gaps in studies assessing footwear worn by people with diabetes, the methods used to measure both foot length and internal footwear length and identify ambiguities which may impact on toe gap assessment in clinical practice, and suggest pragmatic solutions. Methods The Google Scholar database was searched to April 2020 for peer-reviewed studies using keywords related to incorrectly fitting or ill-fitting and diabetes, foot and ulcer which returned 979 results. Included studies within this narrative review encompassed toe gap measurement to assess footwear worn by people with diabetes. Results A total of eight studies were included after full paper review. Toe gap ranges as used in assessments of footwear worn by people with diabetes vary, with a minimum of 1.0–1.6 cm and a maximum of 1.5–2.0 cm, as do methods of measuring internal footwear length. Only three published studies suggested possible measuring devices. Conclusions Toe gap ranged as used when assessing footwear fit in people with diabetes vary and a gold standard device for internal footwear length measurement has yet to emerge. International guidelines provide welcome standardisation, but further research is needed to evaluate both the effect of toe gap ranges upon pressure, plantar stress response and ulceration and available measuring devices to facilitate development of toe gap measurement protocols that may further enhance consistency in practical assessments.

Objective:Neck circumference (NC) is currently used as an embryonic marker of obesity and its associated risks. But its use in clinical evaluations and other epidemiological purposes requires sex and age-specific standardised cut-offs which are still scarce for the Pakistani paediatric population. We therefore developed sex and age-specific growth reference charts for NC for Pakistani children and adolescents aged 2–18 years.Design:Cross-sectional multi-ethnic anthropometric survey (MEAS) study.Setting:Multan, Lahore, Rawalpindi and Islamabad.Participants:The dataset of 10 668 healthy Pakistani children and adolescents aged 2–18 years collected in MEAS were used. Information related to age, sex and NC were taken as study variables. The lambda–mu–sigma (LMS) and quantile regression (QR) methods were applied to develop growth reference charts for NC.Results:The 5th, 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, 90th and 95th smoothed percentile values of NC were presented. The centile values showed that neck size increased with age in both boys and girls. During 8 and 14 years of age, girls were found to have larger NC than boys. A comparison of NC median (50th) percentile values with references from Iranian and Turkish populations reveals substantially lower NC percentiles in Pakistani children and adolescents compared to their peers in the reference population.Conclusion:The comparative results suggest that the uses of NC references of developed countries are inadequate for Pakistani children. A small variability between empirical centiles and centiles obtained by QR procedure recommends that growth charts should be constructed by QR as an alternative method.

Objective: The primary purpose of the current study was to establish Turkishsmoothed centile charts and Lambda, Mu, Sigma (LMS) tables for four-site skinfoldthickness based on a population-based sample, and secondary purpose was toelaborate a reference for the percentage of body fat.Design: A cross-sectional and descriptive study was conducted between Januaryand May 2017. Triceps, biceps and subscapular, suprailiac skinfold thicknesseswere measured using Holtain skinfold caliper. Age- and gender-specific percentilevalues were determined with the LMS method, and body fat percentage was calculatedusing the Westrate and Deurenberg equation.Setting: Afyonkarahisar province in Turkey.Participants: The current study was conducted on 4565, 6–18-year-old students.Results: The triceps, biceps and subscapular skinfolds of the girls were higher thanthe boys. From the age of seven, the sum of four skinfold thicknesses of the girlswas more than those of the boys. This difference became more evident after theage of 12. Although fat percentages of girls showed a fluctuating change, itdecreased with the age in boys. Westrate and Deurenberg equation fat percentagesof girls until adolescence were lower than boys, but increased after 12 years of ageand exceeded that of boys.Conclusions: The current study has provided sex- and age-specific reference valuesfor skinfold thickness and has shown that obesity in girls is higher than in boysin schoolchildren in Afyonkarahisar. The current study has also shown that skinfoldthickness measurements are a valuable tool for screening obesity in children.

Purpose The etiology of young-onset breast cancer (BC) is poorly understood, despite its greater likelihood of being hormone receptor-negative with a worse prognosis and persistent racial and socioeconomic inequities. We conducted a population-based case–control study of BC among young Black and White women and here discuss the theory that informed our study, exposures collected, study methods, and operational results. Methods Cases were non-Hispanic Black (NHB) and White (NHW) women age 20–49 years with invasive BC in metropolitan Detroit and Los Angeles County SEER registries 2010–2015. Controls were identified through area-based sampling from the U.S. census and frequency matched to cases on study site, race, and age. An eco-social theory of health informed life-course exposures collected from in-person interviews, including socioeconomic, reproductive, and energy balance factors. Measured anthropometry, blood (or saliva), and among cases SEER tumor characteristics and tumor tissue (from a subset of cases) were also collected. Results Of 5,309 identified potentially eligible cases, 2,720 sampled participants were screened and 1,812 completed interviews (682 NHB, 1140 NHW; response rate (RR): 60%). Of 24,612 sampled control households 18,612 were rostered, 2,716 participants were sampled and screened, and 1,381 completed interviews (665 NHB, 716 NHW; RR: 53%). Ninety-nine% of participants completed the main interview, 82% provided blood or saliva (75% blood only), and SEER tumor characteristics (including ER, PR and HER2 status) were obtained from 96% of cases. Conclusions Results from the successfully established YWHHS should expand our understanding of young-onset BC etiology overall and by tumor type and identify sources of racial and socioeconomic inequities in BC.

Objective:To assess the longitudinal association between parental BMI and offspring’s BMI, in EPACI Portugal 2012.Design:Longitudinal study with retrospective collection of children’s anthropometry data since birth. Children’s anthropometric data were gathered from individual child health bulletins, and parents’ anthropometrics were self-reported. Children’s and parents’ BMI were classified according to WHO cut-offs. Linear mixed models with random intercept and slope for age were applied to quantify the association between parental BMI and children BMI Z-score (zBMI).Setting:EPACI Portugal 2012.Participants:Representative sample from the Portuguese population (n 2230) aged from 12 to 36 months.Results:58·9 % of the fathers and 35·6 % of the mothers were overweight (OW) or obese. Prevalence of infants who were, at least, at risk of OW increased from 17·0 % to 30·3 % since birth to 12 months. About half of the mothers with pre-pregnancy OW and obesity (OB) gained gestational weight above the recommendations. The children from mothers with gestational weight gain (GWG) below the recommendations showed a −0·15 SD lower zBMI (95 % CI −0·23, −0·06) in early life, comparing with mothers within GWG recommendations. Children of obese mothers were more likely to present a higher zBMI (0·24 SD, 95 % CI 0·13, 0·35) throughout the first months of life.Conclusions:A high prevalence of OW and OB was observed in Portuguese young adults and toddlers. Mothers’ pre-pregnancy BMI and insufficient GWG had a direct effect on offspring BMI. Early effective interventions are needed in order to prevent the transgenerational transmission of OB.

The relationship between insulin‐like growth factor‐1 (IGF‐1) and systolic blood pressure (SBP) is controversial in adults and children. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the IGF‐1 standard deviation score (IGF‐1 SDS) and SBP in children with short stature. A cross‐sectional analysis including 1315 children with short stature was conducted from March 2013 to October 2020. We estimated IGF‐1, blood pressure and other laboratory tests, and anthropometric indicators were also evaluated. Background weight loss is commonly observed with ageing. We explored the trajectory of body mass index (BMI) and two proxies of muscle mass—calf circumference (CC) and mid-arm circumference (MAC)—and identified their determinants. Methods within the SNAC-K cohort, 2,155 dementia-free participants aged ≥60 years were followed over 15 years. BMI, CC and MAC were measured at baseline and follow-ups. Baseline sociodemographic and lifestyle factors were collected through interviews. Diabetes and vascular disorders were diagnosed by physicians through clinical examination and medical records. Data were analysed using linear mixed-effect models stratified by age (younger-old [ Results over the 15-year follow-up, BMI remained stable among participants aged 60 years at baseline (βslope = 0.009 [95% confidence interval −0.006 to 0.024], P = 0.234) and declined significantly among those aged ≥66 years, while CC and MAC declined significantly across all age groups. The decline over 15 years in BMI, CC and MAC separately was 0.435 kg/m2, 1.110 cm and 1.455 cm in the younger-old and was 3.480 kg/m2, 3.405 cm and 3.390 cm in the older-old. In younger-old adults, higher education was associated with slower declines in all three measures, while vascular disorders and diabetes were associated with faster declines. In older-old adults, vigorous physical activity slowed declines in BMI and CC, while vascular disorders accelerated declines in BMI and MAC. Conclusions CC and MAC declined earlier and more steeply than BMI. Cardiometabolic disorders accelerated such declines, while higher education and physical activity could counteract those declines.

Objective:The primary purpose of this study is to examine changes in socio-economic inequality in nutritional status (stunting and underweight) among children in Empowered Action Group (EAG) states.Design:The study is based on the most recent two wave’s cross-sectional data from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) conducted in 2005–2006 (NFHS-3) and 2015–2016 (NFHS-4). The study used height-for-age (stunting) and weight-for-age (underweight) of children as anthropometric indicators.Setting:EAG states including Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh in India.Participants:The study includes a total of 11 858 (NFHS-3) and 92 630 (NFHS-4) children under 5 years of age.Result:The socio-economic inequality in stunting remained unchanged in all EAG states. At the same time, the inequality in underweight decreased during 2005–2016. On decomposing, the factors contributing to socio-economic inequality revealed that household wealth index, mother’s education and mother’s nutritional status were the largest contributors to stunting (47 %, 24 % and 8 %) and underweight (51 %, 21 % and 16 %), respectively, in 2015–2016.Conclusion:The study concluded the socio-economic inequality in underweight among children under 5 years of age increased over the years in EAG states in India. Altogether, household wealth index, mother’s education and mother’s nutritional status contributed to nearly 80 % to inequality in stunting and 90 % to inequality in underweight in 2015–2016. Hence, efforts should be made to minimise the socio-economic inequality in the nutritional status of children, particularly in EAG states in India.

Objective:To evaluate energetic contribution according to the degree of industrial food processing and its association with sociodemographic, anthropometric, biochemical, clinical and behavioural characteristics in adolescents.Design:Cross-sectional study (Adolescent Lifestyle Study). Food consumption was assessed using 24-h dietary recalls, with foods classified by degree of industrial progressing. The usual diet was estimated using the Multiple Source Method. In a linear regression model, the energy percentage (E %) was associated with sociodemographic, anthropometric, biochemical, clinical and behavioural characteristics, after adjustment for sex and age.Setting:Juiz de Fora, Brazil.Participants:Eight hundred and four adolescents, of both sexes, 14–19 years of age, enrolled in public schools.Results:The E % of unprocessed or minimally processed foods corresponded to 43·1 %, processed foods to 11·0 % and the ultraprocessed foods to 45·9 %. E % of unprocessed foods was associated with socio-economic stratum (adjusted β = −0·093; P = 0·032), neck circumference (adjusted β = 0·017; P = 0·049), screen time (adjusted β = −0·247; P = 0·036) and HDL-cholesterol (adjusted β = −0·156; P = 0·003). E % of ultraprocessed foods was associated with socio-economic stratum (adjusted β = 0·118; P = 0·011), screen time (adjusted β = 0·375; P = 0·003), BMI (adjusted β = −0·029; P = 0·025), neck circumference (adjusted β = −0·017; P = 0·028) and HDL-cholesterol (adjusted β = 0·150; P = 0·002).Conclusions:There was a high E % of ultraprocessed foods in the diet of the adolescents. Actions are needed to raise the awareness of adopting healthy eating habits.

Introduction Although laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is still widely accepted as a valid procedure in the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), there continues to be a significant controversy about how long the Roux and biliopancreatic limb should be bypassed for optimum results. Aim To assess the effect of a longer biliopancreatic limb (BPL) length on glycemic control after RYGB in T2DM patients. Material and methods Eighty-four patients with uncontrolled T2DM who underwent RYGB between May 2010 and April 2017 were collected from the prospectively designed database. Forty patients (S-BPL group) received BPL lengths ≤ 50 cm, including 30 cm (n = 1), 40 cm (n = 1), and 50 cm (n = 38). Forty-four patients (L-BPL group) received 100 cm BPL. Anthropometry, serum glucose and lipid metabolic parameters were measured at baseline and 1, 3, 6, 12, 24 and 36 months after surgery. Results Comparing the two groups, there were no significant differences in anthropometric and biochemical measures, except the weight and body mass index, which were higher in the S-BPL group (85.91 ±20.32 vs. 76.25 ±16.99, p = 0.038; 31.87 ±6.61 vs. 28.7 ±4.29, p = 0.005) compared to the L-BPL group. The body weight, glucose and lipid metabolic parameters decreased over time and then remained essentially stable from the first year in both groups. Two years after surgery, the remission (HbA1c% ≤ 6%) of T2DM was 31.2% in the S-BPL group and 37.5% in the L-BPL group (p = 0.685). Conclusions With consistent total small bowel bypass (AL + BPL) lengths, lengthening of the BPL from 30 to 100 cm did not affect the post-RYGB glycemic control and weight loss.

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the associations among obesity-related indices and MetS in diabetic patients, and explore sex differences in these associations. Methods: Patients with type 2 DM were included from two hospitals in southern Taiwan. The Adult Treatment Panel III criteria for an Asian population were used to define MetS. In addition, the following obesity-related indices were evaluated: waist-to-height ratio, waist-hip ratio (WHR), conicity index (CI), body mass index (BMI), body roundness index, body adiposity index, lipid accumulation product (LAP), abdominal volume index, visceral adiposity index (VAI), abdominal volume index and triglyceride-glucose index. Results: A total of 1,872 patients with type 2 DM (mean age 64.0 ± 11.3 years, 808 males and 1,064 females) were enrolled. The prevalence rates of MetS were 59.8% and 76.4% in the males and female (p < 0.001), respectively. All of the obesity-related indices were associated with MetS in both sex (all p < 0.001). LAP and BMI had the greatest areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves in both sex. In addition, the interactions between BMI and sex (p = 0.036), WHR and sex (p = 0.016), and CI and sex (p = 0.026) on MetS were statistically significant. Conclusions: In conclusion, this study demonstrated significant relationships between obesity-related indices and MetS among patients with type 2 DM. LAP and VAI were powerful predictors in both sex. The associations of BMI, WHR and CI on MetS were more significant in the men than in the women.

Background:Association between endocan and non-traditional anthropometric indices, as distinct cardio -vascular disease risk factors, has not been examined inprevious studies. Endocan is a novel inflammationbiomarker with its higher levels involved in cardiometabolicdiseases development. Taking into consideration thatobesity is an independent risk factor for many cardio -metabolic diseases, we aimed to explore the relationshipbetween endocan levels and novel anthropometric indices i.e., body adiposity index (BAI), cardiometabolic index(CMI), a body shape index, body roundness index, conicityindex, lipid accumulation product index and visceraladiposity index and traditional ones i.e., waist circum -ference, hip circumference, body mass index, waist-to-height ratio and waist-to-hip ratio in adult population.Methods:A total of 177 participants were included.Anthropometric indices and biochemical parametres weremeasured. Results:Univariate regression analysis demonstrated posi-tive correlations of endocan and almost all anthropometricdata. To explore independent associations of endocan andanthropometric parameters, the Model which fulfilled crite-ria for ordinal regression testing was created. Adjusted odds for BAI given in the Model (OR=1.120, 95% CI1.036–1.212, P=0.004), demonstrated that a rise in BAIby 1 unit increased the probability of higher endocan con-centration by 12%. As well, a rise in CMI for 1 unit,increased the probability for higher endocan levels for 2.6times (OR=2.599, 95% CI 1.006–6.712, P=0.049). Atotal of 20.1% of variation in endocan levels could beexplained by this Model.Conclusions:Non-traditional obesity indices, BAI and CMIindependently correlated with higher serum endocan levelsin adult population. Uvod: Povezanost endokana sa netradicionalnim antropometrijskim parametrima, kao različitim faktorima rizika za kardiovaskularne bolesti, nije ispitivana u prethodnim studijama. Endokan je novi biomarker inflamacije, čije su veće vrednosti zabeležene kod kardiometaboličkih poremećaja. Znajući da je gojaznost nezavisan faktor rizika za mnoga kardiometabolička oboljenja, cilj je bio da se ispita povezanost endokana i novih antropometrijskih pokazatelja tj. indeks telesne gojaznosti (BAI), kardiometabolički indeks (CMI), indeks oblika tela, indeks zaokruženosti tela, indeks koniciteta, indeks produkata lipidne akumulacije i indeks visceralne gojaznosti i onih tradicionalnih tj. obim struka, obim kukova, indeks telesne mase, odnos obim struka/telesna visina, odnos obim struka/obim kukova u populaciji odraslih. Metode: Ukupno 177 ispitanika je učestvovalo u istraživanju. Mereni su antropometrijski i biohemijski parametri. Rezultati: Univarijantna regresiona analiza je pokazala pozitivnu korelaciju endokana i skoro svih ispitivanih antropometrijskih parametara. U cilju daljeg ispitivanja postojanja nezavisnih korelacija endokana i antropometrijskih parametara, kreiran je Model koji je zadovoljio kriterijume za ordinalnu regresiju. Prilagođeni Odds-ovi za BAI u Modelu (OR=1,120, 95% CI 1,036-1,212, P=0,004), su pokazali da je porast BAI za 1 jedinicu povećao verovatnoću za porast koncentracije endokana za 12%. Takođe, porast CMI za 1 jedinicu, povećao je verovatnoću za veće vrednosti endokana za 2,6 puta (OR=2,599, 95% CI 1,006-6,712, P=0,049). Ukupno 20,1% varijabiliteta u vrednostima koncentracije endokana može biti objašnjeno ovim Modelom. Zaključak: Netradicionalni pokazatelji gojaznosti, BAI i CMI su nezavisno povezani sa većim vrednostima endokana u populaciji odraslih.

Background Nutritional status of patients with COVID‐19 can affect the recovery process of patients; however, no nutritional scale was introduced to evaluate the nutritional status of the patients. Thus, the main objective of this study was to examine the usefulness of Nutritional status‐2002 (NRS‐2002) among COVID‐19 patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Material and Methods In this cross‐sectional study, 73 patients with definitive corona diagnosis admitted to the ICUs of Al‐Zahra hospital, Isfahan, Iran in October 2020 to January 2021 were recruited. Dietary intake, NRS‐2002, demographic, anthropometric and biochemical indices of patients were recorded. Results The majority of patients were at risk for moderate (69.9%) to severe (12.3%) malnutrition. Objective:Our study aimed to describe body phenotypes (BP) estimated by multivariate analysis and their association with body mass.Design:BP were defined based on demographic variables, anthropometric data (body mass, height, skinfolds and circumferences), body composition (phase angle measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis), biochemical parameters (TAG, glucose, total cholesterol ratio/LDL, Hb and sexual maturation (pubic hair and breasts or gonads). ANOVA was performed to verify the differences between skin colour and the stages of pubertal development, BP, body composition, anthropometric and biochemical variables.Setting:Cities of São Paulo-SP, Piracicaba-SP and Florianópolis-SC from Brazil and the United States.Participants:9269 adolescents aged between 10 and 15 years old.Results:The composition of BP was similar in all surveys, which are: BP1 was composed by skinfolds, body mass and circumferences variables; BP2 by pubic hair, breast in girls or gonad in boys, height and age; BP3 by cholesterol, TAG and glucose; and BP4 by phase angle, Hb and glucose (negative loading). There was a strong correlation (r = 0·9, P < 0·001) between BP1 and BMI.Conclusion:We highlighted independence observed between biochemical parameters, anthropometry, body composition and sexual maturation. BP may support the calculation of scores for diagnosis of obesity based on anthropometric variables and overcome ambiguity in the isolated use of BMI.

To provide information regarding the anthropometric and fitness profile of young karatekas and to study its evolution with age. Data from top-level karatekas were included in the analysis: 97 athletes in the U14 category (12–13 years old), 238 in cadet (14–15 years old), 261 in junior (16–17 years old) and 177 in U21 (18–20 years old), which makes a total of 773 athlete data sets. Karatekas underwent anthropometric (weight, height, body mass index and body fat percentage) and fitness (sit and reach, 20-m shuttle run, standing long jump, overhead 3-kg ball throw, 10x5-m shuttle run, and plate-tapping) assessments during the training camps organized by the Spanish National Karate Federation between 1999 and 2016. Male karatekas were taller and heavier, and performed better than females in all the fitness dimensions assessed, except for flexibility and speed of upper limb movements. The obtained cardiovascular and lower-body muscular values indicated that karatekas in this study were placed between the 80th and the 90th percentile when compared with the general population. The results of the agility, coordination and speed of upper limb movements, and flexibility tests showed that the karatekas obtained much higher scores than those observed in age-matched populations. Young karatekas show a high fitness level in comparison with the general population, especially with regards to aerobic performance, lower-body muscular power and upper-limb movement speed. Reference values of anthropometric and fitness dimensions are provided in order to be used by coaches, conditioning trainers and sport scientists when testing young male and female karatekas.

Purpose Pre-operative knowledge of hamstring graft size for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACL) is of clinical importance and useful in making appropriate decisions about graft choice. This study investigated if there is any correlation between anthropometric measurements such as height, weight, body mass index, thigh length, and circumference with the size of hamstring tendon graft in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Methods The anthropometric data of 50 consecutive adult males, who underwent primary ACL reconstruction using quadruple hamstring autograft, were collected prospectively. Data analysis using Pearson’s correlation test was performed and multiple logistic regression analysis was used to investigate any correlation not detected by Pearson’s test and to eliminate confounders. Results Patient’s height and thigh length demonstrated a positive correlation with gracilis graft length (r = .464, P = .001, r = .456, P = .001, respectively) and semitendinosus graft length (r = .541, P = 000, r = .578, P = .000, respectively). While the patient’s age was the only independent factor which had a positive correlation with the quadrupled hamstring graft diameter (r = .412, P = .004), multiple regression analysis showed abdominal girth had a significant negative correlation with gracilis (P = .04) and semitendinosus (P = .006) graft thickness. Conclusion This study demonstrated that some anthropometric measurements had a positive correlation with the hamstring graft length and diameter in male patients. Background: Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is an effective treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), but treatment compliance is often unsatisfactory. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of an intelligent monitoring system for improving CPAP compliance. Methods: This is a prospective, open label, parallel, randomized controlled trial including 60 newly diagnosed patients with OSA requiring CPAP (Apnea–Hypopnea Index [AHI] >15) from Lleida, Spain. Participants were randomized (1:1) to standard management or the MiSAOS intelligent monitoring system, involving (1) early compliance detection, thus providing measures of patient’s CPAP compliance from the very first days of usage; (2) machine learning–based prediction of midterm future CPAP compliance; and (3) rule-based recommendations for the patient (app) and care team. Clinical and anthropometric variables, daytime sleepiness, and quality of life were recorded at baseline and after 6 months, together with patient’s compliance, satisfaction, and health care costs. Results: Randomized patients had a mean age of 57 (SD 11) years, mean AHI of 50 (SD 27), and 13% (8/60) were women. Patients in the intervention arm had a mean (95% CI) of 1.14 (0.04-2.23) hours/day higher adjusted CPAP compliance than controls (P=.047). Patients’ satisfaction was excellent in both arms, and up to 88% (15/17) of intervention patients reported willingness to keep using the MiSAOS app in the future. No significant differences were found in costs (control: mean €90.2 (SD 53.14) (US $105.76 [SD 62.31]); intervention: mean €96.2 (SD 62.13) (US $112.70 [SD 72.85]); P=.70; €1=US $1.17 was considered throughout). Overall costs combined with results on compliance demonstrated cost-effectiveness in a bootstrap-based simulation analysis. Conclusions: A machine learning–based intelligent monitoring system increased daily compliance, reported excellent patient satisfaction similar to that reported in usual care, and did not incur in a substantial increase in costs, thus proving cost-effectiveness. This study supports the implementation of intelligent eHealth frameworks for the management of patients with CPAP-treated OSA and confirms the value of patients’ empowerment in the management of chronic diseases. ObjectiveAssessing dietary exposure or nutrient intakes requires detailed dietary data. These data are collected in France by the cross-sectional Individual and National Studies on Food Consumption (INCA). In 2014–2015, the third survey (INCA3) was launched in the framework of the European harmonization process which introduced major methodological changes. The present paper describes the design of the INCA3 survey, its participation rate and the quality of its dietary data, and discusses the lessons learned from the methodological adaptations.DesignTwo representative samples of adults (18–79 years old) and children (0–17 years old) living in mainland France were selected following a three-stage stratified random sampling method using the national census database.SettingFood consumption was collected through three non-consecutive 24 h recalls (15–79 years old) or records (0–14 years old), supplemented by an FFQ. Information on food supplement use, eating habits, physical activity and sedentary behaviours, health status and sociodemographic characteristics were gathered by questionnaires. Height and body weight were measured.ParticipantsIn total, 4114 individuals (2121 adults, 1993 children) completed the whole protocol.ResultsParticipation rate was 41·5% for adults and 49·8% for children. Mean energy intake was estimated as 8795 kJ/d (2102 kcal/d) in adults and 7222 kJ/d (1726 kcal/d) in children and the rate of energy intake under-reporters was 17·8 and 13·9%, respectively.ConclusionsFollowing the European guidelines, the INCA3 survey collected detailed dietary data useful for food-related and nutritional risk assessments at national and European level. The impact of the methodological changes on the participation rate should be further studied.

ObjectivePrevalence ranges to classify levels of wasting and stunting have been used since the 1990s for global monitoring of malnutrition. Recent developments prompted a re-examination of existing ranges and development of new ones for childhood overweight. The present paper reports from the WHO–UNICEF Technical Expert Advisory Group on Nutrition Monitoring.DesignThresholds were developed in relation tosdof the normative WHO Child Growth Standards. The international definition of ‘normal’ (2sdbelow/above the WHO standards median) defines the first threshold, which includes 2·3 % of the area under the normalized distribution. Multipliers of this ‘very low’ level (rounded to 2·5 %) set the basis to establish subsequent thresholds. Country groupings using the thresholds were produced using the most recent set of national surveys.SettingOne hundred and thirty-four countries.SubjectsChildren under 5 years.ResultsFor wasting and overweight, thresholds are: ‘very low’ (≈6 times 2·5 %). For stunting, thresholds are: ‘very low’ (≈12 times 2·5 %).ConclusionsThe proposed thresholds minimize changes and keep coherence across anthropometric indicators. They can be used for descriptive purposes to map countries according to severity levels; by donors and global actors to identify priority countries for action; and by governments to trigger action and target programmes aimed at achieving ‘low’ or ‘very low’ levels. Harmonized terminology will help avoid confusion and promote appropriate interventions.

Purpose Quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) has found increasing clinical applications. However, to reduce scan time, clinical acquisitions often use reduced resolution and coverage, particularly in the through‐slice dimension. The effect of these factors on QSM has begun to be assessed using only balloon phantoms and downsampled brain images. Here, we investigate the effects (and their sources) of low resolution or coverage on QSM using both simulated and acquired images. Methods Brain images were acquired at 1 mm isotropic resolution and full brain coverage, and low resolution (up to 6 mm slice thickness) or coverage (down to 20 mm) in 5 healthy volunteers. Images at reduced resolution or coverage were also simulated in these volunteers and in a new, anthropomorphic, numerical phantom. Mean susceptibilities in 5 brain regions, including white matter, were investigated over varying resolution and coverage. Results The susceptibility map contrast decreased with increasing slice thickness and spacing, and with decreasing coverage below ~40 mm for 2 different QSM pipelines. Our simulations showed that calculated susceptibility values were erroneous at low resolution or very low coverage, because of insufficient sampling and overattenuation of the susceptibility‐induced field perturbations. Susceptibility maps calculated from simulated and acquired images showed similar behavior. Conclusions Both low resolution and low coverage lead to loss of contrast and errors in susceptibility maps. The widespread clinical practice of using low resolution and coverage does not provide accurate susceptibility maps. Simulations in images of healthy volunteers and in a new, anthropomorphic numerical phantom were able to accurately model low‐resolution and low‐coverage acquisitions.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the clinical feasibility of a 3D-print silica bolus for nasal NK/T-cell lymphoma radiation therapy. Intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) plans were designed using an anthropomorphic head phantom with a 3D-print silica bolus and other kinds of bolus used clinically, and the surface dose was measured by a metal oxide semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) dosimeter. Four nasal NK/T patients with or without 3D-print silica bolus were treated and the nose surface dose was measured using a MOSFET dosimeter during the first treatment. Plans for the anthropomorphic head phantom with 3D-print bolus have more uniform dose and higher conformity of the planning target volume (PTV) compared to other boluses; the homogeneity index (HI) and conformity index (CI) of the VMAT plan were 0.0589 and 0.7022, respectively, and the HI and CI of the IMRT plan were 0.0550 and 0.7324, respectively. The MOSFET measurement results showed that the surface dose of the phantom with 3D-print bolus was >180 cGy, and that of patients with 3D-print bolus was higher than patients without bolus. Objective:To describe and analyse the sociodemographic, anthropometric, behavioural and dietary characteristics of different types of Swiss (no-)meat eaters.Design:No-, low-, medium- and high-meat eaters were compared with respect to energy and total protein intake and sociodemographic, anthropometric and behavioural characteristics.Setting:National Nutrition Survey menuCH, the first representative survey in Switzerland.Participants:2057 participants, aged 18–75 years old, who completed two 24-h dietary recalls (24-HDR) and a questionnaire on dietary habits, sociodemographic and lifestyle factors. Body weight and height were measured by trained interviewers. No-meat eaters were participants who reported meat avoidance in the questionnaire and did not report any meat consumption in the 24-HDR. Remaining study participants were assigned to the group of low-, medium- or high-meat eaters based on energy contributions of total meat intake to total energy intake (meat:energy ratio). Fifteen percentage of the participants were assigned to the low- and high-meat eating groups, and the remaining to the medium-meat eating group.Results:Overall, 4·4 % of the study participants did not consume meat. Compared with medium-meat eaters, no-meat eaters were more likely to be single and users of dietary supplements. Women and high-educated individuals were less likely to be high-meat eaters, whereas overweight and obese individuals were more likely to be high-meat eaters. Total energy intake was similar between the four different meat consumption groups, but no-meat eaters had lowest total protein intake.Conclusions:This study identified important differences in sociodemographic, anthropometric, behavioural and dietary factors between menuCH participants with different meat-eating habits.

Objective:Stunting (height-for-age < −2 sd) is one of the forms of undernutrition and is frequent among children of low- and middle-income countries. But stunting perse is not a synonym of undernutrition. We investigated association between body height and indicators of energetic undernutrition at three critical thresholds for thinness used in public health: (1) BMI SDS < −2; (2) mid-upper arm circumference divided by height (MUAC (mm) × 10/height (cm) < 1·36) and (3) mean skinfold thickness (SF) < 7 mm and to question the reliability of thresholds as indicators of undernutrition.Design:Cross-sectional study; breakpoint analysis.Setting:Rural and urban regions of Indonesia and Guatemala – different socio-economic status (SES).Participants:1716 Indonesian children (6·0–13·2 years) and 3838 Guatemalan children (4·0–18·9 years) with up to 50 % stunted children.Results:When separating the regression of BMI, MUAC or SF, on height into distinguishable segments (breakpoint analysis), we failed to detect relevant associations between height, and BMI, MUAC or SF, even in the thinnest and shortest children. For BMI and SF, the breakpoint analysis either failed to reach statistical significance or distinguished at breakpoints above critical thresholds. For MUAC, the breakpoint analysis yielded negative associations between MUAC/h and height in thin individuals. Only in high SES Guatemalan children, SF and height appeared mildly associated with R2 = 0·017.Conclusions:Currently used lower thresholds of height-for-age (stunting) do not show relevant associations with anthropometric indicators of energetic undernutrition. We recommend using the catch-up growth spurt during early re-feeding instead as immediate and sensitive indicator of past undernourishment. We discuss the primacy of education and social-economic-political-emotional circumstances as responsible factors for stunting.

Objective:WHO BMI-for-agezscore (BAZ) is widely used in epidemiology, yet it does not distinguish body fat-free mass and fat mass which are better indicators of obesity and related risks. The stable isotope dilution techniques (SIDT) are gold standard methods of assessing body composition. Main objective was to assess significant differences in measurement and validity of WHO BMI-for-age classification for defining childhood obesity by comparing with body fatness using SIDT among schoolchildren.Design:A cross-sectional analytical study. A questionnaire, anthropometry and body composition data were used. Concordance coefficient between SIDT and BAZ > 2sdin diagnosing obesity was poor (κ= 0·167). Only 11·6 % of children with excess body fat were correctly diagnosed as obese by BAZ > 2sd. The use of BAZ > 1sdfor overweight and obesity showed fair concordance coefficient (κ= 0·409,P< 0·001) with 32·5% of children with excess fat positively identified as overweight and obese.Conclusion:WHO BMI-for-age cut-off points severely underestimate the prevalence of overweight and obesity compared with body composition assessment by stable isotope dilution techniques. Evidence-informed interventions should be based on more accurate estimates of overweight and obesity than that can be provided by BAZ.
