This paper presents the results of the theoretical external ballistic calculations for projectiles fired from barrels which correspond to the barrels used in two Polish small arms systems: MSBS- 5.56 system (MSBS GROT standard rifle and MSBS GROT carbine) and BERYL system (BERYL standard rifle and MINI BERYL carbine). The results obtained allowed the analyse of the effects of barrel length and the associated initial projectile velocity on the nature of projectile trajectory, particularly the over height and projectile range obtained along the trajectories. The analysis of the results facilitated an assessment of the scope of proposed changes in the settings of the firearm sights, resulting from the use of barrels of different lengths and the consequential changes in projectile trajectory.

Because of its excellent insulation capability, the usage of a silica-phenolic charring ablator as a nozzle liner is a common practice in the solid rocket motor industry. During the design of a solid rocket motor employing a silica-phenolic nozzle liner, it is desired to conduct an accurate analysis yielding in-depth thermal response and recession characteristics. As the interior ballistics and nozzle recession rate mutually interact, the best practice is to perform a coupled solution to both. Commonly used one-dimensional analysis tools with empirical approaches for estimation of convective heat transfer rate and blowing effect generally lack sought accuracy and do not model the transient shape-change phenomenon, which affects the nozzle performance. This Paper considers governing equations for charring, including pyrolysis gas injection and surface energy balance for melting ablation, along with a boundary condition governed by interior ballistics, and demonstrates a framework in which these equations are solved with governing equations for the nozzle flowfield in a coupled manner. Development and validation of a one-dimensional material response solver based on the same governing equations is also demonstrated. Also, results from a static firing test conducted with a small-scale ballistic evaluation motor employing a silica-phenolic nozzle insert are provided. Results from both investigations are compared and discussed.

Application of the method of removal of space debris objects by an ion beam - the IBS method - seems to be the most effective for cleaning the GEO region. This is due to the low energy consumption for transfer one object in a safe orbit delta-V≃11 m/s and the possibility of removal several objects by one spacecraft. The service spacecraft for this purpose can be developed on the basis of telsat technology, taking into account its functions. Such a spacecraft should contain an ion beam injector to act on the removed object and an electric propulsion system, which serves to compensate for the ion injector thrust and to control the spacecraft motion both during transportation of the removed object and during interorbital flights. The development of a weakly diverging ion beam injector, determination of the composition and structure of an electric propulsion system, ballistics of the optimal sequence of interorbital flights, and development of an algorithm for controlling a virtual cluster: spacecraft-removed object are discussed in the article. In the majority of works on IBS, commercial ion thrusters are considered as an ion injector and engines. However, ion beams from ion thrusters have a half angle of divergence of 120-150. When propagating in outer space, the ion beam expands irresistibly due to electron thermal effects. As a result, the distance at which the spacecraft must follow the removed object during its transportation for effective impulse transmission to it should be small (estimated, about 7 m). Taking into account the dimensions of both objects and the uncontrolled movement of the removed object relative to its center of mass, the object transportation operation carries noticeable risks. The results of an experimental study of a prototype of an ion injector with an initial half angle of divergence of 20-40 are presented. The use of such an injector would provide a distance between objects of 15–20 m and reduce the risk of their collision. In connection with IBS, various aspects of spacecraft control during transportation of an object with one, two or more engines as part of the electric propulsion system are considered. In the conceptual design of the spacecraft presented in this work, the electric propulsion system contains two stationary plasma thrusters, each of which is mounted with the possibility of independent rotation respect to two mutually perpendicular directions. Spacecraft motion control, including thrust vector control, is carried out by means of the thrusters coordinated rotation. The characteristics of the spacecraft and its subsystems intended for the removal of several objects are conceptually considered. For example, parameters of the mission for the removal of up to 10 objects from the NORAD catalog from the GEO region are given. In the future, using the result obtained, the control of SC of this scheme when IBS implementing in the low-Earth orbit will be considered.

This is a study to investigate ballistics performance of armor structures with in-layer deflector against projectiles. For this purpose, the armor structure, which consists of a v-cross section sheet metal array covered with aluminum and steel plates, has been designed and optimized. Firstly, numerical simulations were studied using the finite-element method (FEM). The ANSYS LS-DYNA FE software is used for the ballistic analysis. The Johnson-Cook constitutive equation and damage model were used to model the behavior of metal armors under impact in the ballistic simulations. In the next step, experimental studies were carried out. Penetration depths were measured; including the magnitude of plate bending in front of the target plate and bulging behind it. Comparisons between the results of the finite element analysis (FEA) and the tests reveal that a bullet with a velocity of 868 m/s penetrated the target, but the target could not be penetrated at a firing speed of 631 m/s Furthermore the experimental and numerical results were in good agreement. © 2022, Marcílio Alves. This work describes the application of original computer graphics methods to examine the effect of inclusionswithin the solid rocket motor thrust chamber. The adoptance of a dynamic three-dimensional triangular mesh with aself-intersection removal algorithm, as the core of the burning surface regression module, allows the aforementionedtargetto bereached.Manyphenomena notmeasurablein an analyticalclosed form, likedifferent-shapedvoidswithinthe grain, can be investigated. Indeed, both local heterogeneities and surface imperfections could generate unexpectedvariations in the combustion chamber pressure pattern and early thermal protections exposure. The aforementionedtechniques are developed and tested on a ballistic simulator developed using computer graphics methods to improvemesh handling. Simulation results are carried out and discussed.

The main goal of the study is to analyze methods and diagnose mechanical damage to the pipeline using functional analysis, neural networks and the finite element method. In the work, mathematical formulations of the corresponding geometrical inverse problems of the theory of shells on reconstruction of defects of lateral surface are formulated according to measurement data obtained from sensors located in a given section of the shell. The statement was given and a method for solving inverse geometric problems for a shell of Tymoshenko type was developed. The authors have offered methods for solving inverse geometric problems of identifying volumetric and crack-like defects in extended underground structures and pipelines based on the analysis of responses to unsteady elastic-wave perturbations using the mathematical apparatus of wavelet signal transformation, the finite element modeling method and intelligent software system based on neural network.

The article is devoted to the study of the optimal control of propellant consumption during vertical lifting of rocket in homogeneous atmosphere using regularized solution of integral equation of the first kind. The problem of lifting of a rocket into desired height along optimal trajectory in the view of minimal consumption of propellant leads to solving the set of differential and integral equations. Problem of optimal control of propellant consumption during lifting of rocket in homogeneous atmosphere is solved using regularized solution of integral equation of the first kind which is solution of corresponding Euler equation on discrete time net. Influence of the regularization parameter and some additional parameters on precision of discreted problem is investigated. Considered algorithm is summed up easily to the case of non-homogeneous atmosphere by introducing dependence of the ballistic coefficient on altitude of flight and to problem of putting spacecraft into determined orbit and suborbital flights by setting desired altitude and velocity and modifying of motion equations.

Hybrid rocket engines (HREs) are a chemical propulsion system that nominally combine the advantages of liquid-propellant rocket engines (LREs) and solid-propellant rocket motors (SRMs). HREs in some cases can have a higher specific impulse and better controllability than SRMs, and lower cost and engineering complexity than LREs. For HREs and SRMs, both kinds of rocket engine employ a solid fuel grain, and the chosen grain configuration is a crucial point of their design. Different grain configurations have different internal ballistic behavior, which in turn can deliver different engine performance. A cylindrical grain design is a very common design for SRMs and HREs. A non-cylindrical-grain is a more complex grain configuration (than cylindrical) that has been used in many SRMs, and is also a choice for some HREs. However, while an HRE and an SRM can employ the same fuel grain configuration, the resulting internal ballistic behavior would not be expected to be the same. Pressure-dependent burning tends to dominate in SRMs, while axial flow-dependent burning tends to dominate in HREs. To help demonstrate in a more direct manner the influence of the differing combustion processes on the same fuel grain configuration used by an HRE and SRM, a number of internal ballistic simulations are undertaken for the present study. For the reference SRM cases looked at, an internal ballistic simulation program that has the capability of predicting head-end pressure and thrust as a function of time into a simulated firing is utilized for the present investigation; for the corresponding HRE cases, a simulation program is used to simulate the burning and flow process of these engines. For the present investigation, the two simulation programs are used to simulate the internal ballistic performance of various HREs and SRMs employing comparable cylindrical and non-cylindrical fuel grain configurations. The predicted performance results, in terms of pressure and thrust, are consistent with expectations that one would have for both propulsion system types.

Booming technological advances and turbulent military reforms have promoted the continuous advancement of weapons and equipment. High-power microwave (HPM) weapons have changed the damage modes of traditional guns, missiles and other kinetic energy weapons, as well as having the huge advantage of "changing the rules of the game." The study of exterior ballistics of high-power microwave weapons has theoretical support for the design and development of weapons and the verification of performance indicators, and is also an important basis in the firing application of high-power microwave weapons. By studying the coupling mechanism between HPM weapons and targets, an exterior ballistics description of HPM weapons is given According to the description of exterior ballistics, the differences between HPM and traditional weapons in definitions, accuracies, space trajectories, space descriptions and "end points" are summarized and the exterior ballistics space transmission is established. This study reveals the nine major transmission laws of the exterior ballistics of HPM weapons. The constructed model and related theories of the transmission laws for exterior ballistics lay a theoretical foundation for the in-depth study of key technologies of HPM weapons, such as fire control and damage assessment.

Firing accuracy is a critical quantity of interest in the performance analysis of electromagnetic railgun (EMRG) exterior ballistics. Since the simulation technique is always used to simulate the complex physical system at a low cost, it is employed to evaluate the firing accuracy of railgun projectile with uncertainty in this paper. An exterior ballistics simulation model of the railgun, including 3-DOF flight mechanical model, relative kinematic model, and guidance law model, is developed to simulate the ballistics behavior in the missile target intercept mission. The firing accuracy is studied in this paper to compare the capability of EMRG with different ranges and muzzle velocities. In order to explore the firing accuracy of the guided projectile, the guidance precision analysis and ballistics uncertainty quantification are studied. In the guidance precision analysis, the shot range and efficiency are used to make a comparison. In addition, the sensitivity analysis and firing accuracy analysis are also performed in terms of uncertainty quantification. The simulation results illustrate that the simulation of the guided projectile can give some practical guide to the projectile design of EMRG.

The article is focused on the development of the underwater ballistic model of a supercavitating projectile fired from an underwater firearm. The supercavitating flows and their influences on the ballistic characteristics of the projectile are studied. The presented mathematical model is validated and experimentally verified for the supercavitating projectile of 5.7 mm in diameter fired from a smooth bore underwater rifle.

This article is concerned with the issue related to studying the dynamic properties of the aerial target imitator. Applying the modelling principles, the structure and technical data of aerial target imitator were described and utilising the PRODAS software a physical model of the aerial imitator was developed based on the conducted simulation studies. Mass, aerodynamic and basic parameters of flight path were determined. Then, experimental studies of basic dynamic characteristics were discussed. The comparison of results obtained from experimental and theoretical studies proves the correctness of the developed model.

Tha paper focuses on the problems of unmanned cruciform winged glider dynamics and control in autonomous flight conditions, and studies the wing aspect ratio effect on its flight performance. The winged glider control structure in the longitudinal and lateral axes is proposed. We carried out a comparative analysis of the ballistic flight ranges of models of different configurations, as well as the flight ranges of models of different configurations in the operating conditions of the control system of the proposed structure. As a result, the structure of the unmanned winged glider targeting system is proposed. The targeting system in the longitudinal axis, unlike the samples used in currently operating models, consists of two subsystems responsible for the unmanned winged glider best range gliding at the first flight phase and the direct aimpoint guidance at the second, i.e. final, flight stage

A mathematical model is developed to characterize the progressive time-evolution of a fragmenting incandescent object. The objective of these models is to provide a spatio-thermal footprint of the fragmentation field, which can be useful to guide fire safety rules in manufacturing workplaces, as well as to estimate fire hazards. Ascertaining the time-evolution of the temperature of the fragments is quite difficult to measure experimentally, which motivates the model development. Initially, analytical models based solely on ballistics, which provide qualitative trends, are developed to provide insight into the fundamental ratios that govern safe operating conditions. Thereafter, rapid numerical spatio-thermal models, which provide quantitative information, are then developed, based on particle methods. The model uses the released energy from the initial blast pulse to provide the starting kinetic energy of the system of particles and then numerically computes the trajectory and thermal state of the fragments under the influence of Numerical examples and provided and extensions to high-fidelity are discussed.

Powdered Mg and CO2 bipropellant engine providing a practical demonstration of in situ resource utilization (ISRU) for Mars Sample Return (MSR) mission seems to be feasible by current investigations. However, essential functions of the engine to satisfy the complicated ballistics requirements such as thrust modulation and multiple pulse have not been established yet. The aim of this experimental study is to evaluate the engine's thrust modulation feasibility and to investigate its thrust modulation characteristics. A powdered Mg and CO2 bipropellant engine construction aiming to achieve thrust modulation ability was proposed. A mass flow rate calibration experiment to evaluate the gas-solid mass flow rate regulating performance was conducted before fire tests. Fire test result shows that the engine achieved successful ignition as well as self-sustaining combustion; Thrust modulation of the engine is feasible, detail thrust estimating result of the test shows that maximum thrust is 135.91 N and the minimum is 5.65 N with a 22.11 thrust modulation ratio, moreover, the transportation period is quick and the thrust modulation ratio is adjustable. At the same time, the powder feed system reaches a two-step flow rate regulating with a modulation ratio of 4.5–5. What’ more, caused by the uneven engine working conditions, there is an obvious difference in combustion efficiency value, maximum combustion efficiency of the powdered Mg and CO2 bipropellant engine is 80.20%.

In the field of ballistics, Johnson-Cook (JC) plasticity and fracture models have provided a good theoretical basis for the prediction of ballistic performance by capturing the essence of ductile metal fracture. Nevertheless, the JC model cannot accurately reproduce the fracture behaviour of some metals. Many Lode parameter-dependent fracture criteria have effectively improved this deficiency, indicating that the fracture loci of these metals are Lode-dependent, even though the flow stress behaviour is stress state dependent, which cannot be well characterized by the JC plasticity model. In this paper, a series of mechanical tests and parallel numerical simulations of ZK61m magnesium alloy were conducted. The results showed that the flow stress behaviour and fracture loci of the alloy were obviously Lode dependent. Therefore, it seems insufficient to evaluate only the necessity of incorporating Lode parameter into a fracture criterion in predicting ballistic performance of ZK61m magnesium alloy, and more investigations on the influence of Lode parameter on the plasticity behaviour of the material should be carried out. In the present work, ballistic tests were conducted on 5 mm thick ZK61m magnesium alloy plates using blunt and ogival nose shaped projectiles with a nominal diameter of 12.68 mm. The targets failed by shear plugging when impacted by blunt-nosed projectiles, but caused a unique failure pattern under the impact of ogival-nosed projectiles. Lode-dependent plasticity model and fracture criterion were adopted. Better prediction accuracy was observed when Lode parameter is considered in both the plasticity model and fracture criterion simultaneously.

An experimental study and hydrocode simulation was conducted to investigate the correlation between hardness of steel and the ballistic performance of steel-encapsulated SiC armour modules against long rod impact. The armour module design composed of a SiC tile in confinement within 10 mm backing and 5 mm cover plates, which were made of AISI 4340 steel with varying hardnesses between HRC 30 to 50. The armour modules were subjected to normal impact by conical tungsten alloy long rods of 8.3 mm diameter and 115 mm length, at a nominal striking velocity of 1.25 km/s. A witness block of AISI 4340 steel was placed behind the armour module to capture the residual projectile. Failure analysis of the armour modules and the measurement of residual penetration in the witness blocks were applied to characterize ballistic performance of the ceramic armour modules. The different modes of failure of the backing plate and its influence on ballistic performance of the module were verified through visual inspection of test modules and analysis of high speed videos. Hydrocode simulation of the experiments using LS-DYNA was carried out to model the penetration and failure processes that occurred in the armour modules. The Johnson Cook model was applied in simulation of the steel confinement, accounting for the influence of hardness on JC model parameters. Results showed that increasing hardness of the backing enhanced the performance of the module while cover plate hardness had no influence within the range of hardnesses tested. This study paves the way for future studies to further understand the influence of steel hardness on the ballistics performance of steel-encapsulated silicon carbide (SiC) armour modules.

Small (5.56 mm, 7.62 mm and 9 mm) and medium (12.7 mm) arms rounds were fired at snow-filled 1.5m cubic gabions in a mid-winter condition in Fairbanks, Alaska. The rounds were excavated and penetration by each ammunition type was measured. A distribution and average of penetration depth was determined. All 320 rounds fired were captured within 1.5m after entering the snow barrier. Comparison with published models of ballistics penetration of snow showed mixed results with several matching our data within 10% and all but one within 32%. However, most of these models are simplistic in that they accommodate limited variables and therefore may not be expected to perform well in all settings. We conclude that snow-based ballistics protection structures can be quickly and efficiently erected in suitable environments and with minimal size, can provide reliable protection against small and medium arms fire.

According to the characteristics of small caliber grenade, this paper establishes its internal and external ballistic model, and studies the characteristics and basic rules of internal and external ballistic of grenade. The key factors affecting the accuracy of the distance model are analyzed, and the techniques and methods for determining the parameters of the distance model are studied. The measuring system and wireless setting system for the precise control of small caliber grenade blast point are designed. The theoretical method of controlling the blast point of projectile by DSP chip and improving the accuracy of distance determination is described. Finally, a wireless setting system is constructed based on related theories and sensors.

A single optical fibre sensor is used to measure the dynamics of an impact. The method consists of sewing the optical fibre onto a woven Kevlar layer and placing it between the shoot pack and backing material. The measurement is accomplished by using the friction between the layer and the optical fibre to relate the optical fibre strain to impact deformation. Tests are done using a backing material of Roma Plastilina No.1 clay, and transparent ballistics gel with independent high-speed imaging. A final calculated BFD average error of 7.75% is presented as well as a timing error of 15.5% between the imaged dynamic BFD and the dynamic BFD determined by the FBG. This method is also tested at the U.S. Army Aberdeen Test Center in Maryland with a final calculated error of 7%.

This research conducts 300 small-scale ammunition experiments using moderate bullet speeds and a variety of bullet configurations in order to understand the relationship between penetration behavior and bullet shape. To maximize the survivability of soldiers and reduce their vulnerability and ballistics wounds, it is very important to understand the penetration physics of bullets. Inside human bodies, tumbling and traveling trajectories are important factors to consider when analyzing human injuries due to ballistics. Therefore, many kinds of bullets and armor have been proposed to minimize or maximize human damage. In this study, to support the development of bullets, 10 bullets with different head angle shapes and different diameters were manufactured and fired at speeds less than 200 m/s towards transparent gelatin blocks, and the damage mechanisms, i.e., temporary cavities and permanent cavities, were studied by taking penetration images using a high speed camera. It was found that the tumbling and rotations of bullets are influenced by kinetic energies and the shapes of bullets, and several empirical relationships are derived. The results suggest that the shapes and the diameters are crucial factors for ballistics wounds.

Exterior ballistics performance evaluation plays a critical role in the design and development of the electromagnetic railgun system. The ballistics performance evaluation can be regarded as a multicriteria decision-making problem, for the reason that various characteristics, also termed criteria, have effects on the overall performance. A sophisticated simulation model, including six-DOF mechanics, railgun configuration, environment, and aerodynamics models are established to compute the exterior ballistics profile. Then a comprehensive framework based on cloud model and analytic hierarchy process method are proposed to evaluate ballistics performance. Eight criteria including ballistics velocity, energy efficiency, flight time, flight range, overload, attack angle, and sideslip angle stability are selected to determine exterior ballistics performance. The proposed approach yields the certainty degree of each criterion and integrates multicriteria into the whole performance. Two scenarios including 32-MJ launch energy and 200-km strike range are taken to generate alternatives for assessing ballistics performance, which demonstrate the proposed approach is feasible. Results show that in the same launch energy 32 MJ, the performance levels of 12- and 16-kg projectiles are I (excellent) and III (medium), respectively. Besides, gaining the projectile’s mass can improve performance in the same strike range 200 km.

A mathematical-physical model of the hypersonic anti-tank kinetic subcalibre projectile for 120 mm munition was built. Computer simulations of the projectile flight were performed for any angle of shooting, from 0° to 90°. Trajectories of projectile flights were determined considering all angles of shooting. Theoretical calculations were verified by experimental measurement of the projectile velocity in time while shooting on a test range. Some conclusions with regard to safety during hypersonic projectile shooting on the test range were formulated.

In support for the development of a new small-arm ballistic computer based on the NATO Armaments Ballistic Kernel (NABK) for the Canadian snipers, DRDC Valcartier Research Centre was asked to carry out high-fidelity 6 degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) trajectory simulations for a set of relevant vignettes for the snipers, and to compare the direct fire 6-DOF simulation results with those obtained with the 4-DOF NATO Armaments Ballistic Kernel (NABK) adapted to simulate small-arm ammunition trajectories. To conduct this study, DRDC Valcartier Research Centre used BALCO v1.0b. This paper presents (1) the process and the methodology employed to carry out the sniper direct fire solution study, (2) the modeling and the simulation of the sniper projectile, the approach used in calculating the firing solutions, and the results of direct fire simulations for the sniper vignettes, and (3) an analysis of firing solutions obtained with the BALCO engine versus those of NABK. The work presented in this paper serves to validate the use of NABK for the new sniper ballistic computer.

An optimization method is introduced to design the aerodynamic parameters of a dual-spin two-dimensional guided projectile with the canards for trajectory correction. The nose guidance component contains two pairs of canards which can provide lift and despin with the projectile for stability. The optimal design algorithm is developed to decide the profiles both of the steering and spinning canards, and their deflection angles are also simulated to meet the needs of trajectory correction capabilities. Finally, the aerodynamic efficiency of the specific canards is discussed according to the CFD simulations. Results that obtained here can be further applied to the exterior ballistics design.

The fundamental components of any meteoroid/orbital debris (MOD) risk assessment calculation are environment models, damage response predictor equations, and failure criteria. In the case of a spacecraft operating in low earth orbit, the response predictor equation typically takes the form of a ballistic limit equation (BLE) that defines the threshold particle sizes that cause failure of a spacecraft wall or component. Spacecraft risk assessments often call for BLEs for spacecraft components that do not exist. In such cases, it is a common procedure to use an existing BLE after first equivalencing the actual materials and/or wall thicknesses to the materials that were used in the development of the existing BLE. The question naturally arises regarding how close are the predictions of such an ‘adapted BLE’ to the response characteristics of the actual materials/wall configurations under high speed projectile impacts. This paper presents the results of a study that compared the predictions of a commonly used BLE when adapted to the Soyuz OM wall configuration against those of a new BLE that was developed specifically for that Soyuz wall configuration. It was found that the critical projectile diameters predicted by the new Soyuz OM wall BLE can exceed those predicted by the adapted use of the existing BLE by as much as 50% of the existing BLE values. Thus, using the adapted version of the existing BLE in this particular case would contribute to a more conservative value of assessed risk. If the same trends were to hold true for other spacecraft wall configurations, then it is also possible that using existing BLEs, even after they have been adjusted for differences in materials, etc., may result in predictions of smaller critical diameters (i.e., increased assessed risk) than would using BLEs purposely developed for actual spacecraft configurations of interest.

For both ethical and practical reasons accurate tissue simulant materials are essential for ballistic testing applications. A wide variety of different materials have been previously adopted for such roles, ranging from gelatin to ballistics soap. However, while often well characterised quasi-statically, there is typically a paucity of information on the high strain-rate response of such materials in the literature. Here, building on previous studies by the authors on other tissue analogues, equation-of-state data for the elastomeric epithelial/muscular simulant material Perma-Gel ® is presented, along with results from a series of ballistic tests designed to illustrate its impact-related behaviour. Comparison of both hydrodynamic and ballistic behaviour to that of comparable epithelial tissues/analogues (Sylgard ® and porcine muscle tissue) has provided an insight into the applicability of both Perma-Gel ® and, more generally, monolithic simulants for ballistic testing purposes. Of particular note was an apparent link between the high strain-rate compressibility (evidenced in the Hugoniot relationship in the U s -u p plane) and subsequent ballistic response of these materials. Overall, work conducted in this study highlighted the importance of fully characterising tissue analogues – with particular emphasis on the requirement to understand the behaviour of such analogues under impact as part of a system as well as individually.

Reasonable simulation of the bench blasting has great significance on designing of rock blasting, and the proper consideration of blasting fragmentation size has strong influence on the simulation accuracy. This paper presents a new approach based on the three dimension Distinct Element Code (3DEC) method (Itasca Consulting Group, Inc. 2003) to model the dynamic cracking and casting process of bench blasting with reasonable consideration of blasting fragmentation size. Firstly, an equivalent blasting load consisting of the stress wave pressure and the detonation gas pressure was introduced into the 3DEC model, and it was applied on the outer boundary of blast-induced crushed zone to guarantee the simulation efficiency. Then, the whole numerical model was divided into discrete blocks by several sets of artificial joints to enable the rock to crack, fragment and cast, and at last form a muck-pile, and the artificial joints were assigned with the same mechanical parameters to rock mass itself to avoid the impact of them on stress wave propagation. Different from general discrete schemes which discretize the model with uniform blocks or random balls, the discrete size adopted in this paper gradually increases with distance from the blast source according to the Harries' model (Harries, 1973). At last, the proposed method was examined and verified by simulation of a blasting crater comparing to the field experiment, and then applied to explore the casting process of bench blasting. The simulated muck-pile profile agrees well with the result predicted by the traditional ballistics theory. The simulation also indicates that the casting distance of bench blasting increases with the bench height ( H) , but decreases with the burden distance ( W) , while the height of muck-pile increases with both the W and H . So the muck-pile profile of bench blasting is more sensitive to the W than H after consideration of rock fragmentation size, and the optimization of blasting designs can be significantly enhanced by utilizing the full capabilities of this approach.

A laboratory gun that uses compressed gas as its propellant was designed and tested for the study of small projectiles traveling in soils with initial velocities ranging from 50 to 200 m/s. The gun employed the use of air or helium with an electrically triggered, pneumatically piloted, solenoid valve. The triggering system was designed to provide remote activation. A photo gate speedometer was utilized to measure the exit velocity of each projectile. Details of the electro-pneumatic control system are presented in this paper along with the design of the gun assembly and its subsystems. The effects of different design parameters, including muzzle length, projectile mass, propellant type, and volume of compressed gas utilized, on projectile velocity were investigated. Statistical analysis of the gun performance is presented. The gun is currently being used to visualize the fundamental physics of rapid earth penetration in soils, using transparent soils.

© 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. The impact response of an ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber reinforced polymer matrix composite laminate has been investigated. The laminate encapsulated an aluminum alloy sandwich panel whose corrugated core was filled with prismatic alumina inserts. The laminate encased hybrid core target could sustain ceramic prism base impacts by a spherical, 12.7 mm diameter steel projectile with velocities in excess of 2.7 km s-1. This was 150% higher than the ballistic limit of an equal areal density, similarly encapsulated aluminum plate target. By contrast, when the projectile impacted a hybrid core target at the apex of a ceramic prism insert, failure of the UHMWPE laminate on the rear face occurred at a lower impact velocity. High-speed imaging, three-dimensional digital image correlation and x-ray tomography measurements are used to show that upon impact the projectile and the ceramic insert fragment. These fragments then load the UHMWPE laminate on the rear face with a significantly reduced pressure compared to the impact pressure of the projectile on the front surface of the target. The loading area on the inner surface of the rear laminate was highest for a prism base impact and lowest for a prism apex impact. The inability to penetrate the rear laminate of the base impacted samples is consistent with the recent identification of an impact pressure controlled mechanism of progressive penetration in this class of laminate.

The mechanisms of progressive penetration for two ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) reinforced laminates have been investigated. One used an UHMWPE fiber reinforcement while the other utilized molecularly aligned tape. Both materials had similar out of plane compressive strengths, but the fiber system had a 40% higher in plane tensile strength than the tape. Laminated, 6 mm thick plates with a [0°/90°] ply architecture were impacted by a 12.7 mm diameter sphere under conditions that either allowed out of plane plate deflection or eliminated this deflection by rear support of the target. The depth of penetration and the ballistic limit in the rear-supported tests were identical for the two materials, and proceeded by progressive ply failure. However, tests in the edge clamped condition resulted in a substantially higher penetration resistance, especially for the higher tensile strength fiber-reinforced material. Edge clamped testing of a bilayer target, where the front third was composed of the tape material and the remainder comprised fiber reinforced laminate, had the same ballistic limit as a target composed of only the higher ply tensile strength fiber reinforced material. Penetration in both test support conditions was discovered to occur by tensile ply rupture under the projectile, consistent with a recently proposed mechanism for converting out of plane compression to in plane ply tension. Lateral displacement of plies was also observed near the sides of impact craters in both materials, indicating the existence of a second mechanism impeding penetration of the spherical shaped projectile.

The STANAG 4496 Ed. 1 Fragment Impact, Munitions Test Procedure is normally conducted by gun launching a projectile for attack against a munition. The purpose of this test is to assess the reaction of a munition impacted by a fragment. The test specifies a standardized projectile (fragment) with a standard test velocity of 2530±90 m/s. The standard test velocity can be challenging to achieve and has several loosely defined and undefined characteristics that can affect the test item response. MSIAC performed and international review of the STANAG 4496 related to the fragment impact test. To perform the review, MSIAC created a questionnaire in conjunction with the custodian of this STANAG and sent it to test centers. Fragment velocity variation, projectile tilt upon impact, aim point variation and projectile material were identified as observed gun testing issues. These, as well as other gun testing issues, have significant implications to resulting IM response.

The effect of matrix shear strength on the ballistic response of simply-supported carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) beams was explored for a flat-ended projectile. To gain insight into the deformation and failure mechanisms, the following additional tests were performed on CFRP beams: (i) quasi-static indentation tests with rigid back support and, (ii) quasi-static cropping tests. In all 3 types of tests, CFRP [0°/90°] cross-ply laminates were tested in six states of cure, such that the matrix shear strength ranges from 0.1 MPa to 100 MPa. In the quasi-static cropping tests, the composite beams failed by shear plugging (involving transverse matrix cracks, ply delamination, and fibre fracture). In contrast, indirect tension (by ply tensile failure in the fibre direction) occurred in the back-supported quasi-static indentation tests. In the ballistic tests, the CFRP beams of high matrix shear strength (30 MPa–100 MPa) failed by a shear plugging mode. When the matrix shear strength was less than 30 MPa, the failure mode and the penetration velocity doubled and occurred by indirect tension. The optimal shear strength to give adequate static and ballistic strength is on the order of 20 MPa.

A mathematical-physical model of a supersonic missile was built, taking into account the mass and inertia properties. The model was implemented in the MathCAD14 simulation program. A numerical analysis of the missile ballistics was conducted and basic parameters were determined: range, altitude, velocity and acceleration, which enabled a test range program for manufactured missile models to be drawn up. Initial flight tests of missiles were carried out at the test range. Satisfactory accordance of experimental and theoretical dynamic parameters of the missile under study was obtained.

The PELE ammunition is characterized by a low-density filling material surrounded by a high-density brittle jacket material. An analytical model describing the fragmentation of this ammunition behind a target plate is presented. This model assumes uniaxial strain in the filling and uses the Ranking–Hugoniot relations to calculate the material state. In addition, shock and rarefaction wave interactions at the target free surface and the filling/target interface are accounted for, as well as the radial rarefaction originating from the jacket outer surface. This allows the calculation of the pressure evolution in the filling and the radial acceleration of the jacket at any axial position along the projectile. This model aims at improving previously published analytical models where the acoustic wave approximation was used and the wave interactions were neglected. Experimental results (Paulus and Schirm, 2006) are used to validate the analytical model for different target materials (aluminum and steel), target thicknesses (3 mm and 8 mm), filling materials (polyethylene and aluminum) and impact velocities (900 m/s to 3000 m/s). A qualitative comparison based on X-ray photographs reveals similar features between the model and the experiments, such as smaller and lighter fragments with a greater radial velocity at the front of the projectile compared to the fragment characteristics at the back of the projectile. A quantitative comparison based on the maximum radial velocity of the fragments shows on average a 20% difference between the analytical and experimental results for all impact conditions considered. Despite this difference, the analytical trend follows more closely the experimental one compared to the acoustic approximation especially at high impact velocities. In addition, the acoustic approximation fails to reproduce the jacket fragmentation pattern since the fragmentation length of the jacket is significantly under-predicted. A numerical simulation is also presented using the ANSYS Autodyn 14.0 software. The results show that the numerical and analytical pressure evolution in the filling and the radial velocity of the jacket are in very good agreement, verifying the uniaxial strain assumption. This agreement (together with the experimental agreement) thus suggests that the Rankine–Hugoniot relations, the wave interactions and the radial rarefaction wave must all be included in the model to adequately describe the fragmentation of the PELE ammunition behind a thin target plate.

Monolithic, porous, thermal protection systems were used heavily on the Apollo command module, and they are currently being used on the next generation of US manned spacecraft, Orion. These systems insulate reentry critical components of a spacecraft against the intense thermal environments of atmospheric reentry. Additionally, these materials may be highly exposed to space environment hazards like solid particle impacts. This paper discusses impact studies up to 10 km/s on nominally 0.56 g/cm 3 Avcoat ablator with phenolic flexible hexcore. An impact model that describes projectile dispersion in a monolithic material is described that provides excellent agreement with observations over a broad range of impact velocities, obliquities and projectile materials.

Composite laminates made of glass/epoxy with and without nano fillers were subjected to projectile impact. The laminates of different thicknesses were prepared by hand lay-up and compression molding processes. Laminates were made from glass woven roving mats of 610 gsm, epoxy resin and nano clay of 1-5 wt.% of matrix. A piston type gas gun setup was used to impact a spherical nose projectile of diameter 9.5 mm and mass of 7.6 g, on the nanocomposite laminates at impact velocities in the range of their ballistic limit and above. The energy absorbed during penetration and ballistic limit of the nanocomposite laminates were studied both experimentally and analytically. The analytical model also predicts the energy absorbed in various failure modes due to tensile failure of primary fibers, deformation of secondary fibers, delamination and matrix crack. Mechanical properties like tensile modulus, stress-strain function, shear modulus, and strain energy release rate were used as input to the analytical model. Laminates of three, five and eight layers have been considered for the analysis. The effect of clay dispersion in the matrix for different failure modes is discussed. Ballistic limit obtained from the model is validated with experimental results and good agreement is found. � 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Based on the theory of fractional order calculus (FOC), a novel extended proportional guidance (EPN) law for intercepting the maneuvering target is proposed. In the first part, considering the memory function and filter characteristic of FOC, the novel extended PN guidance algorithm is developed based on the conventional PN after introducing the properties and operation rules of FOC. Further, with the help of FOC theory, the average load and ballistics characteristics of proposed guidance law are analyzed. Then, using the small offset kinematic model, the robustness of the new guidance law against autopilot parameters is studied theoretically by analyzing the sensitivity of the closed loop guidance system. At last, representative numerical results show that the designed guidance law obtains a better performance than the traditional PN for maneuvering target.

The aim of this paper is to determine the velocity, energy, maximum range and distance at which pellets fired from an air rifle of kinetic energy below 17 J can pose a threat to unprotected human skin. Doppler radar equipment and exterior ballistics software were used in this examination.

Wind can and often does significantly affect impact-point prediction (IPP) performance for thrusting/ballistic endoatmospheric projectiles. Wind exacerbates the estimation ambiguity between drag and thrust in the dynamic model and induces additional uncertainty in the IPP procedure. A tracker accounting for the wind effect is presented and simulation study shows that it can be fully compensated if the wind information is available. An-point adaptive initialization based on a goodness-of-fit test and a statistical significance test is introduced. Based on the multiple interacting multiple model (MIMM) approach developed recently, the IPP performance is investigated with respect to the total observation time and the sensor accuracy in various wind scenarios. In each Monte Carlo (MC) run of the simulation study, under the same sensor accuracy and the same observation time, the same set of random numbers has been used (but different in different MC runs) for the same caliber projectile in various wind scenarios to examine how much the wind affects the IPP performance with/without the exact knowledge of the wind information. The final conclusion is that with the wind effect accounted for, the IPP performance in the presence of wind is practically the same as in its absence.

The mechanisms of projectile penetration of extruded 6061T6 aluminum alloy sandwich panels with empty and alumina filled, triangular corrugated cores have been experimentally investigated using zero obliquity, 12.7 mm diameter hard steel projectiles whose diameter was about a half that of the core's unit cell width. We find that low momentum impacts are laterally deflected by interactions with the inclined webs of the empty core. Complete penetration occurred by shear-off within the impacted front face sheet, followed by stretching, bending and tensile fracture of the core webs and finally shear-off within the back face sheet. This combination of mechanisms was less effective at dissipating the projectiles kinetic energy than the shear-off (plugging) mechanism of penetration of the equivalent solid aluminum panel. Inserting ballistic grade alumina prisms in the triangular cross section spaces of the corrugated core significantly increased the panel's ballistic resistance compared to the empty panel. The presence of the hard ceramic led to severe plastic deformation and fragmentation of the projectile and comminution and macroscopic fracture of the ceramic. The Al/Al2O3 hybrid panel ballistic limit was reached when pairs of parallel cracks formed in the rear face sheet at core web-face sheet nodes. The separation distance between these cracks was dependent upon the location of the impact with respect to that of the web-face sheet nodes. Nodal impacts resulted in pairs of fractures that were separated by one cell width and a critical velocity below that of the equivalent solid plate. Impacts mid-way between pairs of nodes resulted in back face sheet crack pairs separated by twice the cell width, and a critical velocity higher than the equivalent solid plate. Using X-ray tomography we show this resulted from the formation of oval (not circular) cross section fracture conoids in the ceramics. The conoid angle was about 60° in the extrusion direction but only 30° in the transverse direction. This observation may have interesting consequences for a panel's resistance to a second, close proximity impact.
