Rivers provide key ecosystem services that are inherently engineered and optimized to meet the strategic and economic needs of countries around the world. However, limited water quality records of a full river continuum hindered the understanding of how river systems response to the multiple stressors acting on them. This study highlights the use of Sentinel-2 Multi-Spectral Imager (MSI) data to monitor changes in water color in two optically complex river systems: the Yangtze and Danube using the Forel-Ule Index (FUI). FUI divides water color into 21 classes from dark blue to yellowish brown stemming from the historical Forel-Ule water color scale and has been promoted as a useful indicator showing water turbidity variations in water bodies. The results revealed contrasting water color patterns in the two rivers on both spatial and seasonal scales. Spatially, the FUI of the Yangtze River gradually increased from the upper reaches to the lower reaches, while the FUI of the Danube River declined in the lower reaches, which is possibly due to the sediment sink effect of the Iron Gate Dams. The regional FUI peaks and valleys observed in the two river systems have also been shown to be related to the dams and hydropower stations along them. Seasonally, the variations of FUI in both systems can be attributed to climate seasonality, especially precipitation in the basin and the water level. Moreover, land cover within the river basin was possibly a significant determinant of water color, as higher levels of vegetation in the Danube basin were associated with lower FUI values, whereas higher FUI values and lower levels of vegetation were observed in the Yangtze system. This study furthers our knowledge of using Sentinel-2 MSI to monitor and understand the spatial-temporal variations of river systems and highlights the capabilities of the FUI in an optically complex environment. Pollution of water bodies with heavy metals can lead to the death of fish and other aquatic organisms, a decrease in biodiversity and a threat to ecosystems, emphasising the importance of preserving the natural environment; pollution of water bodies can have serious economic consequences, in particular, a decrease in profits from fishing, tourism, and other activities related to water use, which requires the development of water management strategies. The purpose of the study was to determine the general trends in the content of heavy metals in the surface waters of the Teteriv River and fattening pond No. 1 of the LLC "SHF INTERRYBHOSP". Water samples were taken at the stream of the Teteriv River (Vidsichne Reservoir) and in the fattening pond No. 1 at a depth of 0.2-0.5 m from the surface for further laboratory analysis of the content of heavy metal ions (HM). The atomic absorption method of analysis was used to study water. Laboratory studies of surface waters in the Teteriv River and pond were performed according to the following indicators: hydrogen index (pH), lead, cadmium, manganese, zinc, and iron content. The results of the study of the content of heavy metals in the Teteriv River are presented, which showed that the content of such heavy metals as: Pb, Cd, Mn, Zn and Fe, in river water, with the exception of iron, exceed the limits of maximum admissible values of water quality indicators for fishery water bodies. Background HM indicators from fattening pond No. 1 did not show an excess of the MAC (maximum admissible concentration). High concentrations of lead, cadmium, manganese, and iron are explained by powerful anthropogenic pollution, the source of which is agricultural and industrial complexes of Zhytomyr Oblast. Inland waters are significant, yet highly uncertain, natural sources of nitrous oxide (N2O). Many emission models assume that N2O is only emitted from freshwaters, and that N2O sink behavior is negligible. However, observational studies have reported N2O undersaturation, suggesting that inland waters can act as N2O sinks due to net N2O consumption. This study leverages data from the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) and an existing global emission model to examine the prevalence of and controls on N2O undersaturation in streams, rivers, and lakes across scales and biomes. We find that N2O undersaturation is prevalent in the NEON data set (14%–30% of samples) and process‐based model outputs (38%), occurring across biomes and spatial scales. Failing to account for undersaturation in the NEON data set could result in an 100% overestimation of N2O emissions. These results show that consideration of N2O sink behavior is needed for accurate emission estimates. Plain Language Summary: Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a climate‐relevant greenhouse gas that is increasing in the atmosphere due to human activities. It also contributes to stratospheric ozone depletion. Inland waters (e.g., streams, rivers, and lakes) are significant, yet uncertain, sources of N2O to the atmosphere. In general, emission models assume that N2O is produced in and emitted from inland waters. However, field observations have shown that inland waters can also act as sinks of atmospheric N2O, potentially offsetting emissions. Understanding when and where inland waters act as N2O sinks is needed for accurate emission estimates. This study uses a large observational data set and an existing global emission model to explore when, where, and to what extent inland waters act as N2O sinks. The carbon (C) cycle in inland waters, including carbon concentrations in and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from water surfaces, are at the forefront of biogeochemical studies, especially in regions strongly impacted by ongoing climate change. Towards a better understanding of C storage, transport and emission in Central Asian mountain regions, an area of knowledge that has been extremely poorly studied until now, here, we carried out systematic measurements of dissolved C and CO2 emissions in rivers and lakes located along a macrotransect of various natural landscapes in the Sayan–Altai mountain region, from the high mountains of the Western Sayan in the northwest of Tyva to the arid (dry) steppes and semideserts in the intermountain basins in the southeast of Tyva on the border with Mongolia. New data on major hydrochemical parameters and CO2 fluxes (fCO2) gathered by floating chambers and dissolved organic and inorganic carbon (DOC and DIC, respectively) concentrations collected over the four main hydrological seasons allowed us to assess the current C biogeochemical status of these water bodies in order to judge possible future changes under climate warming. We further tested the impact of permafrost, river watershed size, lake area and climate parameters as well as 'internal' biogeochemical drivers (pH, mineralization, organic matter quality and bacterial population) on CO2 concentration and emissions in lakes and rivers of this region and compared them with available data from other subarctic and mountain settings. We found strong environmental control of the CO2 pattern in the studied water bodies, with thermokarst lakes being drastically different from other lakes. In freshwater lakes, pCO2 negatively correlated with O2, whereas the water temperature exerted a positive impact on pCO2 in large rivers. Overall, the large complexity of counteracting external and internal drivers of CO2 exchange between the water surfaces and the atmosphere (CO2-rich underground DIC influx and lateral soil and subsurface water; CO2 production in the water column due to dissolved and particulate OC biodegradation; CO2 uptake by aquatic biota) precluded establishing simple causalities between a single environmental parameter and the fCO2 of rivers and lakes. The season-averaged CO2 emission flux from the rivers of Tyva measured in this study was comparable, with some uncertainty, to the C uptake fluxes from terrestrial ecosystems of the region, which were assessed in other works. As a subtype of toponym, hydronyms reflect people’s perception, understanding, and contemplation of waterbodies. With data collected from authoritative gazetteers, this study classifies the names of 189 major rivers distributed across Mainland China into seven categories to extrapolate general rules governing river-naming in China. The results show that descriptive names comprise the biggest share. Based on this study’s research findings, this article also discusses the complex cognitive processes, including conceptual metonymy, conceptual metaphor, and conceptual blending involved in river-naming in China. Specifically, based on the principles of proximity and prominence, the most frequently employed types were the following metonymies: PLACE FOR RIVER, PROPERTY FOR RIVER, PERSON FOR RIVER, EVENT FOR RIVER, and FUNCTION FOR RIVER. Whether and how alpine organismic communities respond to ongoing environmental changes is difficult to assess quantitatively, given their intrinsically slow responses, remote locations and limited data. Here we provide a synthesis of the first five years of a multidisciplinary, highly standardized, long-term monitoring programme of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems in the Austrian Hohe Tauern National Park and companion sites in northern Italy and the central Swiss Alps. The programme aims at evidencing the ecological state and trends in largely late-successional, high-elevation ecosystems. We present the conceptual framework, the study design and first results. Replicated over five regions, different sites and a multitude of permanent plots, the abiotic (microclimate, physics and chemistry of soils and water bodies), biodiversity (plants, animals, microbes), and productivity data (alpine grassland, lakes, streams) provide a representative reference for future re-assessments. The wide spectrum of biological baseline data presented and their spatial and temporal variation also illustrate the degree of uncertainty associated with smaller-scale and short-term studies and the role of stochasticity in long-term biological monitoring. Dam reservoirs play an important role in meeting sustainable development goals (SDGs) and global climate targets. However, particularly for small dam reservoirs, there is a lack of consistent data on their geographical location. To address this data gap, a promising approach is to perform automated dam reservoir extraction based on globally available remote sensing imagery. It can be considered as a fine-grained task of water body extraction, which involves extracting water areas in images and then separating dam reservoirs from natural water bodies. A straightforward solution is to extend the commonly used binary-class segmentation in water body extraction to multiclass. This, however, does not work well as there exists not much pixel-level difference of water areas between dam reservoirs and natural water bodies. We propose a novel deep neural network (DNN)-based pipeline that decomposes dam reservoir extraction into water body segmentation and dam reservoir recognition. Water bodies are first separated from background lands in a segmentation model and each individual water body is then predicted as either dam reservoir or natural water body in a classification model. For the former step, point-level metric learning (PLML) with triplets across images is injected into the segmentation model to address contour ambiguities between water areas and land regions. For the latter step, prior-guided metric learning (PGML) with triplets from clusters is injected into the classification model to optimize the image embedding space in a fine-grained level based on reservoir clusters. To facilitate future research, we establish a benchmark dataset with Earth imagery data and human-labeled reservoirs from river basins in West Africa and India. Extensive experiments were conducted on this benchmark in the water body segmentation task, dam reservoir recognition task, and the joint dam reservoir extraction task. Superior performance has been observed in the respective tasks when comparing our method with state-of-the-art approaches. The ecological assessment of all surface water bodies in Europe according to the Water Framework Directive involves the monitoring of biological, physicochemical and hydromorphological quality elements. For the hydromorphological assessment in particular, there are numerous methods that have been developed and adopted by EU member countries. With this study, we compared three different methods (River Habitat Survey, Morphological Quality Index and River Hydromorphology Assessment Technique) applied in 122 river reaches that are part of the National Monitoring Network of Greece. The main objectives were (a) to identify whether different assessment systems provide similar classifications of hydromorphological status and (b) to distinguish strengths and weaknesses associated with the implementation of each method. Our results show that the River Hydromorphology Assessment Technique (RHAT) and the Morphological Quality Index (MQI) resulted in the same classification for 58% of the studied reaches, while 34% of the remaining cases differed by only one quality class. Correlations between the two indices per river type (ICT) showed that the two indices were strongly correlated for water courses located at low altitudes. Concerning the HMS index of the River Habitat Survey (RHS), which is an index that reflects the overall hydromorphological pressure, it showed larger differences with the other two indices, mainly because it classified more sites as "Poor" and "Bad" quality classes. Based on our results, we recommend that the two indices, RHAT and MQI, can be implemented complementary to the RHS for providing a rather easy and quick assessment of the overall hydromorphological status, at least until a national hydromorphological database is compiled that will allow for the proper adaptation of the Habitat Quality Assessment (HQA) index. The study aimed to analyse the representativeness of the monitoring sites for the ecological status assessment of running water bodies through an example of a model systems: Chetirka (Logodashka) River and its tributaries Gabrovska and Leshtinska River as well as the section of the Struma River after the Chetirka inflow. Hydrobiological (benthological and physical-chemical) studies were conducted in the summer of 2016 at six selected representative sites affected by different types of anthropogenic pressures (habitat change, over-exploitation, contamination with nutrients, etc.). The data were compared to the ecological status assessment performed by the Bulgarian West-Aegean Basin Directorate during 2011-2018. The analysis of the associated physical-chemical parameters showed good-high status for all studied rivers and stretches. According to the Biotic Index, the Gabrovska River was determined in a high-good status whereas the Leshtinska, Chetirka and the section of the Struma River after the Chetirka inflow were characterised by moderate ecological status. The results obtained for the polluted sites demonstrate the need for more frequent monitoring observations at vulnerable sites exposed to adverse influences and droughts in order to prevent potential negative impacts on the main river basin. This article addresses the issue of estimating Pom—the probability of misclassifying the chemical status confidence of a water body status assessment. The main concerns of the authors were chemical quality elements with concentrations in water bodies which are close to or even smaller than the limit of quantification (LOQ). Their values must be set to half of this limit to calculate the mean value. This procedure leads to very low standard deviation values and unrealistic values of Pom for chemical indicators. In turn, this may lead to the false conclusion that not only is the chemical status good but also that this status assessment is perfect. Therefore, for a more reliable calculation of Pom, the authors suggested a modified calculation in which the value of half the LOQ for calculating the mean value was kept, but zero as the concentration value for the standard deviation calculation was adopted. The proposed modification has been applied to the Hierarchical Approach procedure for Pom estimation of the chemical status of Polish rivers and lakes. The crucial finding is that current chemical status assessments may be incorrect in the case of approximately 25% of river water bodies and 30% of lake water bodies categorised as good, and 20% of both types of water bodies classified as below good. Background: Leptospira are shed into the environment via urine of infected animals. Rivers are thought to be an important risk factor for transmission to humans, though much is unknown about the types of environment or characteristics that favor survival. To address this, we screened for Leptospira DNA in two rivers in rural Ecuador where Leptospirosis is endemic. Results: We collected 112 longitudinal samples and recorded pH, temperature, river depth, precipitation, and dissolved oxygen. We also performed a series of three experiments designed to provide insight into Leptospira presence in the soil. In the first soil experiment, we characterized prevalence and co-occurrence of Leptospira with other bacterial taxa in the soil at dispersed sites along the rivers (n = 64). In the second soil experiment, we collected 24 river samples and 48 soil samples at three points along eight transects to compare the likelihood of finding Leptospira in the river and on the shore at different distances from the river. In a third experiment, we tested whether Leptospira presence is associated with soil moisture by collecting 25 soil samples from two different sites. In our river experiment, we found pathogenic Leptospira in only 4 (3.7%) of samples. In contrast, pathogenic Leptospira species were found in 22% of shore soil at dispersed sites, 16.7% of soil samples (compared to 4.2% of river samples) in the transects, and 40% of soil samples to test for associations with soil moisture. Conclusions: Our data are limited to two sites in a highly endemic area, but the scarcity of Leptospira DNA in the river is not consistent with the widespread contention of the importance of river water for leptospirosis transmission. While Leptospira may be shed directly into the river, onto the shores, or washed into the river from more remote sites, massive dilution and limited persistence in rivers may reduce the environmental load and therefore, the epidemiological significance of such sources. It is also possible that transmission may occur more frequently on shores where people are liable to be barefoot. The caddisflies (Trichoptera) constitute a significant water quality marker group because of their taxonomic richness, ecological diversity, and abundance in virtually all freshwater ecosystems. In this study, caddisflies were collected for an evaluation of the water quality in Kallada river, South, India. Samples collected during the pre-monsoon season were identified at the family level. In total, more than 4500 specimens were identified as belonging to five different taxa. These sensitive species have typically been restricted to non-polluted water bodies. The dominant family at stations S1, S2, S3 and S4 was determined to be Hydropsychidae, whereas the dominant family at S5 was found to be Philopotamidae. The upstream, midstream and downstream sites of Kallada River show drastic differences among caddisfly assemblages. The lack of caddisflies in the midstream and downstream areas is due to anthropogenic interferences and mixing of seawater with freshwater within these low-altitude regions. Other sources of pollution, including bridge construction, urbanization and fishing both midstream and downstream are likely reasons for the fundamental changes in the composition of caddisfly assemblages observed in these areas. In the present study, Landsat-8 data have been used for water identification at the Sangam region, the confluence of the Ganges and Yamuna rivers. Since the water of both the rivers varies in characteristics, it is necessary to explore the most appropriate band of Landsat-8 imagery for the identification of water bodies. Accordingly, a two folded study has been performed, viz., the selection of a suitable band to identify water bodies and to monitor the water level at the Sangam region from 2013 to 2018. It is observed in the study that band-7 is the most suitable band for water identification, which is used for the classification and monitoring of water. The classification results are highly significant as the overall accuracy ranges between 95.49 and 100%. The monitoring of water level is done based on classification results for mapping the area of water in real units which can be useful for the prediction of flood situations. The achievement of the present study is the mapping of water area in real units with the help of image pixels which is one of the prominent applications of image processing in earth sciences. The method based on original metric called Hydromorphological Index for Rivers (HIR) was developed in 2017 for the purpose of the monitoring of the hydromorphological status of flowing waters in Poland. It fulfils the requirements of the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD). It allows the assessment of both lowland rivers as well as mid-altitude and highland streams. The proposed system can be used to assess the natural and heavily modified rivers as well as artificial channels. The basis of the proposed system is a field survey, which is supplemented by the analysis of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data and remote sensing materials. The analysis of the GIS data and remote sensing materials already enable to estimate preliminary classification of the hydromorphological status of the non-surveyed water bodies. On the basis of the field survey, the principal HIR value can be estimated for the considered river site and comparing with the reference conditions, the hydromorphological quality status in the five-class system can be calculated. The properly selected, representative survey sites (one or more depending on the heterogeneity of the environment), enable the classification and evaluation of entire surface water bodies in the framework of the national environmental monitoring. The GIS component of the HIR proved to be useful in verifying the determination of heavily modified water bodies and in assessing the needs of river restoration. Reference conditions of water bodies are defined as the natural or minimal anthropogenically disturbed state. We compared the methods for determining total phosphorus and total nitrogen concentrations in rivers in Finland, Norway and Sweden as well as the established reference conditions and evaluated the possibility for transfer and harmonisation of methods. We found that both methods and values differed, especially for lowland rivers with a high proportion of agriculture in the catchment. Since Denmark has not yet set reference conditions for rivers, two of the Nordic methods were tested for Danish conditions. We conclude that some of the established methods are promising but that further development is required. We moreover argue that harmonisation of reference conditions is needed to obtain common benchmarks for assessing the impacts of current and future land use changes on water quality. The signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) is considered to be the most successful crayfish invader in Europe. It is present across the continental part of Croatia, with first records from the Mura-Drava river basin in 2008 and from the karstic Korana River in 2011. In both rivers, P. leniusculus presents an imminent threat to indigenous crayfish species (ICS). The aim of the study was to explore the range expansion of P. leniusculus 10 years after its first record in Croatia. Based on the data collected via an extensive literature search and our own fieldwork performed in 2018, we here demonstrated that P. leniusculus is the most successful non-indigenous crayfish species (NICS) in Croatia, with the invasion range covering the largest extent of Croatia compared to other NICS. Its dispersal rates in the rivers of the continental part of Croatia have remained among the highest in Europe. In the Drava River, recorded dispersal rate (21.3 km/yr) corresponded to the predictions made by the earlier study that estimated P. leniusculus dispersal over 10 years. However, due to the low number of caught individuals along the 128 km of the Drava River course, dispersal rates as well as invasion pathways (natural vs. human-mediated) need to be further explored. The predicted encounter of P. leniusculus with the invasive Faxonius limosus was not observed. In the Korana River, we observed a continued expansion of P. leniusculus invasion range in both upstream and downstream direction. Dispersal rates were higher in the upstream direction, potentially due to differences in competitive pressure by the native crayfish, Pontastacus leptodactylus, which abundances were 6 times higher at the downstream invasion front. In both rivers, a displacement of the native P. leptodactylus has been observed. Even though P. leptodactylus has been considered to be the most robust ICS, that successfully expands its range in water bodies of Croatia and Europe, it is also the species the most adversely affected by the range expansion of the P. leniusculus in the continental part of Croatia. The pollution of natural waters, both sea and fresh, is a crucial issue all over the world. Most of the large and small rivers, streams, and reservoirs almost in every federal district of the Russian Federation are characterized as polluted and dirty. The Miass River is one of the main among the large rivers in South Ural. The ecological state of the river is characterised as bad. This work assesses a thirteen-year change of water quality in the Miass River and Argazinskoe and Shershnevskoe reservoirs, which are the source of drinking water for the residential area of the Chelyabinsk region. The river water is used to provide the cities and towns of the region, as well as numerous industrial and farming enterprises with water. Besides, effluents are discharged into the Miass river along its whole length. The results of many years of observation have shown, that heavy metals and biogenic substances are the main pollutants for the river. This work aims to analyse episodes of high and extremely high pollution of the water bodies. Episodes of high and extremely high levels of Cu, Zn and Mn are recorded annually at dam part of Argazinskoe reservoir. Episodes of high and extremely high levels of biogenic elements are recorded for the stretches of the river downstream of Chelyabinsk. This study focused on the hydrological and runoff formation processes of river water by using stable isotope tracing in the source regions of the Yangtze River during different ablation episodes in 2016 and the ablation period from 2016 to 2018. The effects of altitude on stable isotope characteristics for the river in the glacier permafrost area were greater than for the main stream and the permafrost area during the ablation period in 2016. There was a significant negative correlation (at the 0.01 level) between precipitation and δ18O , while a significant positive correlation was evident between precipitation and d -excess. More interestingly, significant negative correlations appeared between δ18O and temperature, relative humidity, and evaporation. A mixed segmentation model for end-members was used to determine the proportion of the contributions of different water sources to the target water body. The proportions of precipitation, supra-permafrost water, and glacier and snow meltwater for the main stream were 41.70 %, 40.88 %, and 17.42 %, respectively. The proportions of precipitation, supra-permafrost water, and glacier and snow meltwater were 33.63 %, 42.21 %, and 24.16 % for the river in the glacier permafrost area and 20.79 %, 69.54 %, and 9.67 %, respectively, for that in the permafrost area. The supra-permafrost water was relatively stable during the different ablation periods, becoming the main source of runoff in the alpine region, except for precipitation, during the ablation period. In the Philippines, phytoremediation studies on heavy metals are mainly concentrated in mining areas amidst several reports of heavy metal contamination even in non-mining sites in various parts of the country. Such was the case Balili River which was reportedly contaminated with mercury (Hg) and lead (Pb). Aquatic macrophytes growing in the river could offer the solution to this problem via phytoremediation. Thus, this study was conceptualised to determine the uptake of Hg and Pb in selected dominant macrophytes of the river namely Amaranthus spinosus, Eleusine indica and Pennisetum purpureum. Soil, water and plant samples gathered from the study sites were submitted to Department of Science and Technology-Cordillera Administrative Region (DOST-CAR) laboratory for Hg and Pb determination. Soil and wastewater of Balili River were found contaminated with Pb but not with Hg. The soil recorded higher Hg concentration than water while Pb concentrations did not differ between the two media. The aquatic macrophytes in the study registered consistently higher Hg and Pb in their shoots > roots but differed in their capacities and distribution in the shoot organs. Hg and Pb accumulation was significantly (p = 0.00) higher in stem of P. purpureum while in E. indica, leaf had the highest accumulation, though not statistically significant (p = 0.09). For A. spinosus, Hg was highest in its leaf while Pb in stem, though not statistically significant (p = 0.06). Among the three macrophytes, P. purpureum showed the highest potential for Hg uptake and translocation and for Pb uptake. On the other hand, the highest Pb internal transfer was recorded in E. indica. These results contradict initial findings that Pb is mostly accumulated in plant roots with minimal shoot translocation. Background. Morphological changes in river beds determine the risk for soil erosion within floodplain areas. At present, little is known about river morphological changes in high-altitude mountainous area influenced by extensive human activities. The study has important reference value for clarifying the morphological changes of mountainous rivers due to extensive human activities. Methods. Based on the long-term multi-source remote sensing image data, we analyzed morphological changes in the lower Lancang River (LCR) in Southwest China at regional and local scales, and determined their influencing factors. Visual interpretation is used to extract the information and unify the interpretation standards of various localities, mainly including water bodies, sandbars, shorelines and beaches. Based on high-resolution remote sensing images, we analyzed the planforms, erosion and accretion conditions in Jinghongba (JHB) reach and Ganlanba (GLB) reach. Results. Our results showed that: (1) during 1993 2016, the planforms of Jinghongba and Ganlanba in the wide valley of the lower LCR changed significantly, (2) In the interval 1993 to 2016, the JHB reach exhibited extensive erosion, with the right bank more eroded seriously than the left bank, and an erosion area of 0.36 km2. The erosion area of the GLB reach was 0.33 km², with accretion area of 0.61 km². The right bank was dominated by erosion, while the left bank by sedimentation; (3) Morphological changes in JHB and GLB reches were the result of the combined effects of cascade hydropower development, river regulation, and sand-mining in the river. Estuary is an important route for the transport of terrestrial contaminants to the ocean. Its unique hydrodynamic properties may influence the fate and distribution of pollutants. Previous studies have shown that severe pollution because of antibiotics has occurred in many inland surface waterbodies; however, the behavior of antibiotic residuals remains poorly understood in estuarine environments. In this study, the occurrence and spatiotemporal distribution of seven selected antibiotics (i.e., sulfamethazine, sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim, ofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, and roxithromycin) in a tidal river were investigated through one continuous and four synoptic sampling events. Results show that the concentrations of most antibiotics are in the nanogram per liter level, except for trimethoprim with the highest concentration up to 12,440 ng L−1 during the wet season. Except for sulfamethazine, the other six antibiotics showed high concentrations (i.e., > 100 ng L−1) in at least one sampling campaign. Different temporal distribution patterns of these antibiotics indicated that they were mainly controlled by source loading, flow condition, and discharge amounts. Spatial distribution indicated that the main pollution source of trimethoprim was located in lower reaches, while the other six antibiotics mainly came from the upstream sources. Based on the theoretical dilution line, erythromycin and roxithromycin degraded in the tidal river, whereas the other five types of antibiotics showed a conservative behavior. Tide has important effects on the spatial distribution of antibiotics, especially those with a wide concentration range, in estuarine environments. Furthermore, risk assessment based on the calculated risk quotients showed that five types of antibiotics pose high risks to aquatic organisms. The monitoring of rivers’ hydromorphological characteristics represents a requirement of the EU Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC (WFD) amended in 2014 (2014/101/EU), which introduces several standards regarding the monitoring of the quality elements of all surface water categories. Thereby, for the hydromorphological elements, the Standard 14614:2004 Water quality – Guidance standard for assessing the hydromorphological features of rivers became mandatory. In this view, a method for field data collection was developed considering the specifications of the mentioned Standard. The method, focused on surface water bodies – rivers, is based on both field surveys and desk work, the information being registered in two types of records (A and B). The hydromorphological monitoring is to be conducted on survey units (SU) of fixed length (500 m) and variable widths, with detailed observations and measurements in three sections: upstream and downstream (at SU’ boundaries) and a base section (approx. at the middle of the SU). The field measurements are supplemented by visual observations and estimation of some hydrological and morphological characteristics. At the same time, if on field measurements and samplings are not possible, the method permits the collection of data only from visual observations and estimations. Given the fact that the Methodology for hydromorphological assessement of Romanian rivers, which is included in the second Romanian River Basin Management Plan 2016-2021 (RBMP), considers the indicators for three main categories of hydromorphological elements: hydrological regime, river continuity and morphological conditions and that the proposed method for data collection follows the specifications of the same documents (WFD, RBMP etc.), we consider the method provides good support in desk resulted data validation and completion, for both, monitored rivers (through gauging stations) and unmonitored rivers. Luciobarbus barbulus Heckel, 1847 was described from water bodies around Shiraz and the Qara Aqaj River, one of the main rivers in Shiraz City, Iran. In the present study localities, a geographical range map of Luciobarbus barbulus and new data on the present status of this species are presented. In our latest sampling we assessed for the first time the presence of this species in the Lesser Zab River where no specimen had been collected in the past on this part of the river. At present, a significant weakening of the intensity of transverse mixing at the confluence of large rivers, which is observed in a number of cases, is widely discussed. Since the observed features of the confluence of large watercourses are not only of research interest but also of significant economic importance associated with the characteristics of water management at these water bodies, a large number of works are devoted to their study. Water resources management requires measures for the organization of water use which can be rational only under the understanding of processes occurring in water basins. To explain the phenomenon of suppression of the transverse mixing, which is interesting and important from the point of view of ecology, a wide range of hypotheses is proposed, up to the negation of turbulence in rivers. One of the possible mechanisms for explaining the suppression of transversal mixing can be the presence of transverse circulation manifesting itself as Prandtl's secondary flows of the second kind. The characteristic velocity of these circulation flows is very small and difficult to measure directly by instruments; however, in our opinion, they can significantly complicate the transverse mixing at the confluence. The proposed hypothesis is tested in computational experiments in the framework of the three-dimensional formulation for dimensions of a real water object at the mouth of the Vishera River where it meets the Kama. Calculations demonstrate that, at sufficiently large flow rates, the two waters practically do not mix in the horizontal direction throughout the depth over long distances from the confluence. It has been found that a two-vortex flow is formed downstream the confluence, which just attenuates the mixing; the fluid motion in the vortices is such that, near the free surface, the fluid moves from the banks to the middle of the riverbed. Mitochondrial 16S rDNA and CO I gene were used as molecular markers for the analysis of the genetic diversity and differentiation of Daphnia galeata populations in nine water bodies in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. In the combined 16S rDNA and CO I gene sequences, 54 variable sites and 44 haplotypes were observed among 219 individuals belonging to nine D. galeata populations. Average haplotype diversity and nucleotide diversity were, respectively, 0.72% and 0.56%. The F‐statistics (FST) value of the D. galeata populations was 0.149. According to the results of the neutral test, D. galeata in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River had experienced a bottleneck effect in the history. Molecular variance analysis indicated that the genetic differentiation of the D. galeata populations mainly occurred within populations (85.09%). Greater genetic differentiations of D. galeata among individuals within populations appeared in the populations from the Huaihe River basin, whereas smaller genetic differentiations occurred in the populations from the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. Strong gene flows were all observed between Group I (four populations from the middle reaches of the Yangtze River) and Group ΙΙ (three populations from the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River), and Group ΙΙΙ (two populations from the Huaihe River basin). The effective migration rates (M) were 851.49 from Group I to Group ΙΙ and 685.96 from Group I to Group ΙΙΙ, respectively. However, no significant relationship was observed between the genetic differentiation and geographical distance of the nine populations (r = .137, p > .05). Results suggested that the genetic differentiation of D. galeata in the water bodies in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River resulted mainly from geographical isolation. The Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) is a new constellation of eight low Earth orbiting spacecrafts that receive both direct and reflected signals from GPS satellites. Coherent reflection of the GPS signal from standing water over land results in a high surface reflectivity signal in the CYGNSS data. An image processing algorithm is presented, which leverages the surface reflectivity signal to produce a watermask of inland waterbodies at 0.01° × 0.01° spatial resolution. The watermask is compared to hand‐drawn maps of inland waterbodies, as well as to the MODIS watermask product. We find that the CYGNSS watermask provides accurate, time‐varying maps that are able to resolve changes in lake and river position and extent. With CYGNSS' short return time, watermasks can be generated using as little as half a month of data to produce near‐real‐time maps of flooding events. The redclaw crayfish, Cherax quadricarinatus (von Martens, 1868), inhabits freshwater creeks and water bodies, and is native to the tropics of Queensland and the Northern Territory in Australia, as well as south-eastern Papua New Guinea. It has been translocated to other parts of Australia and around the world, often becoming established in the wild and potentially having negative impacts in invaded ecosystems. In north-western Australia, which lacks native crayfish, this species is known from the Ord River system in the Kimberley Region and from a water supply reservoir, Harding Dam, in the Pilbara region. Following a report of their presence in another area of the Pilbara region, Karijini National Park, a rapid assessment of crayfish occurrence was undertaken in and around Karijini and Millstream-Chichester National Parks. Redclaw crayfish were found at the known site within Karijini National Park and at a river pool west of the park. They were also detected in George River within Millstream-Chichester National Park. A separate baseline aquatic fauna survey, undertaken later as part of a mining environmental impact assessment, also recorded populations of the species in a tributary of the Fortescue River, located between these parks. The survey suggests that redclaw presence is associated with significant reorganisation of faunal and floral assemblages of river pools. With the new records presented here, the redclaw crayfish is now known from four catchments in the Pilbara Region, spread across three of the region's five drainage basins. Management options for this alien species are limited in this remote area, but would require further surveys to better understand their current distribution and dispersion capability, setting up public education campaigns and targeted control measures to minimise their spread to new catchments and their impact on high conservation value aquatic ecosystems. In recent years the analysis of the variations of seismic background signal recorded in temporal deployments of seismic stations near river channels has proved to be a useful tool to monitor river flow, even for modest discharges. The objective of this work is to apply seismic methods to the characterization of the snowmelt process in the Pyrenees, by developing an innovative approach based on the hierarchical classification of the daily spectrograms. The CANF seismic broad-band station, part of the Geodyn facility in the Laboratorio Subterráneo de Canfranc (LSC), is located in an underground tunnel in the Central Pyrenees, at about 400 m of the Aragón River channel, hence providing an excellent opportunity to explore the possibilities of the seismic monitoring of hydrological events at long term scale. We focus here on the identification and analysis of seismic signals generated by variations in river discharge due to snow melting during a period of six years (2011–2016). During snowmelt episodes, the temporal variations of the discharge at the drainage river result in seismic signals with specific characteristics allowing their discrimination from other sources of background vibrations. We have developed a methodology that use seismic data to monitor the time occurrence and properties of the thawing stages. The proposed method is based on the use of hierarchical clustering techniques to classify the daily seismic spectra according to their similarity. This allows us to discriminate up to four different types of episodes, evidencing changes in the duration and intensity of the melting process which in turn depends on variations in the meteorological and hydrological conditions. The analysis of six years of continuous seismic data from this innovative procedure shows that seismic data can be used to monitor snowmelt on long-term time scale and hence contribute to climate change studies. Predation is one of the main barriers that exotic species may face in newly colonized areas and may help stop or control the potential negative impacts of invasive species in the environment. We evaluated if the consumption of an invasive prey (armored catfish: Pterygoplichtys sp.) affects the dietary niche breadth and trophic level of a native predator (Neotropical river otter: Lontra longicaudis) in northern Guatemala. We examined otter scats from three rivers: two where the invasive armored catfish occurred and one without the invasive fish. Samples were collected two and seven years after the first report of the catfish in the area. We performed gross scat analysis and stable isotope analyses of nitrogen and carbon of fecal matter. Where the invasive armored catfish occurred, it was the main prey item for L. longicaudis. Particularly in the river outside of protected areas seven years after the first report of the catfish, where it accounted for 49% of the otter diet. Concordance was found between the two techniques to estimate dietary niche breadth and trophic level. The dietary niche breath of otters was narrower seven years after the invasion in comparison to two years after the invasion in both invaded rivers, but the extent of the reduction was lesser inside the protected area. Finally, the trophic level of otters also showed a reduction related to the occurrence of the armored catfish in their diet. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The quandong or native peach (Santalum acuminatum R.Br.) has been recognised as an important and tasty food resource among Aboriginal Australians in arid and semi-arid areas of southern Australia. It is valued for its fruit that is consumed raw or dried, and for its kernel, which is eaten raw or ground into paste for medicinal and skin care purposes. This paper reports on a study of ground stone implements within the Murray Darling Basin that has identified quandong stones as a distinct type of implement made specifically for the efficient cracking of quandong nuts. Data are presented on 1,327 ground stone implements from collections in 12 different locations in the Murray-Darling Basin (MDB), an area almost completely devoid of stone sources. Given the paucity of stone, multi-purpose use of implements is widely documented. Although it was common to find pits present in mortars and other ground stone tools demonstrating multiple functions, including use as anvils, a class of single purpose stones with multiple pits and distinctive form was identified. Most of these were found in areas known for groves of quandong and four were analysed for use-wear and residues along with two other ground stone items from the MDB. The safety of highly aggregated tourist crowds is a challenging and important issue. This paper not only provided a comprehensive analysis of the accidents of highly aggregated tourist crowds but also determined the occurrence mechanism and coping paths. Based on the analysis of multiple cases, we found that the variable status of highly aggregated tourist crowds was the result of the interaction of three main elements: multisource pressure, state mutations and management responses. A series of factors interact and result in accidents, and the lack of a management response or a low-quality management response is the root cause of such accidents. A high-quality management response is a basic safety precaution for highly aggregated tourist crowds. Impact of barge movement on phytoplankton abundance and biomass was assessed in the lower stretch of river Ganga, popularly known as Bhagirathi-Hooghly river, during April 2016 to March, 2017. Based on the magnitude of tide, intensity of shipping and boating activities, the stretch from Baranagar to Lalbag (278 km), located at latitude (22°38'33.41"N to 24°10'59.75"N) and longitude (88°21'21.29"E to 88°16'5.65"E) was divided into three zones viz. zone—I (Baranagar to Barrackpore), zone II (Triveni to Balagarh) and zone III (Nabadweep to Lalbag). Water samples were collected randomly from six stations covering 22 barge movements at their passage at three different time intervals viz., 30 minutes before ‘barge movement’, during ‘barge movement’ and 30 minutes after ‘barge movement’. Analysis revealed the presence of 52 phytoplankton taxa belonged to 5 phylum during the study period. The abundance of phytoplankton was highest in zone—I followed by zone III and the zone II. A 44% decrease (1,997 ±1,510 ul-1) in phytoplankton abundance was observed during ‘barge movement’ with respect to normal condition (3,513 ± 2,239 ul-1) which could be due to propeller turbulence in the passage. Cell damage study revealed 21% damage in phytoplankton cell structure in ‘during barge’ followed by ‘after barge’ (10%) condition compared to natural state (6%). Study revealed that phytoplankton biomass (Chlorophyll a) was influenced by ‘barge movement’ in the sampling stretches and the impact was assessed by one way ANOVA. The effect was found significant at Barrackpore (p <0.01), Triveni (p <0.01), Balagarh (p <0.01) and Lalbag (p <0.01) where as it was insignificant at Baranagar and Nabadweep, which may be due to continuous and existing boat trafficking at Baranagar and Nabadweep. Two way ANOVA computed using ‘barge movement’ and sampling stations showed significant (p<0.01) effect on magnitude of Chl a concentrations in the sampling locations. Thus, the ‘barge movement’ influenced phytoplankton abundance and biomass, it had a detrimental effect on phytoplankton cell architecture also. The data set of this work serves as foundation information to understand the ecological implications augmented barge induced environmental disturbances in waterways. The environment receives antibiotics through a combination of direct application (e.g., aquaculture and fruit production), as well as indirect release through pharmaceutical manufacturing, sewage and animal manure. Antibiotic concentrations in many sewage-impacted rivers are thought to be sufficient to select for antibiotic resistance genes. Yet, because antibiotics are nearly always found associated with antibiotic-resistant faecal bacteria in wastewater, it is difficult to distinguish the selective role of effluent antibiotics within a ‘sea’ of gut-derived resistance genes. Here we examine the potential for macrolide and fluoroquinolone prescribing in England to select for resistance in the River Thames catchment, England. We show that 64% and 74% of the length of the modelled catchment is chronically exposed to putative resistance-selecting concentrations (PNEC) of macrolides and fluoroquinolones, respectively. Under current macrolide usage, 115 km of the modelled River Thames catchment (8% of total length) exceeds the PNEC by 5-fold. Similarly, under current fluoroquinolone usage, 223 km of the modelled River Thames catchment (16% of total length) exceeds the PNEC by 5-fold. Our results reveal that if reduced prescribing was the sole mitigating measure, that macrolide and fluoroquinolone prescribing would need to decline by 77% and 85%, respectively, to limit resistance selection in the catchment. Significant reductions in antibiotic prescribing are feasible, but innovation in sewage-treatment will be necessary for achieving substantially-reduced antibiotic loads and inactivation of DNA-pollution from resistant bacteria. To understand the ecology of juvenile chum salmon during early marine life after their downstream migration, we developed a quantitative PCR-based environmental DNA (eDNA) method specific for chum salmon and investigated the spatiotemporal distribution of eDNA in Otsuchi Bay, Iwate, Japan. Indoor aquarium experiments demonstrated the following characteristics of chum salmon eDNA: (1) the eDNA shedding and degradation were time- and water temperature-dependent and the bacterial abundance could contribute to the eDNA decay, (2) fecal discharge may not be the main source of eDNA, and (3) a strong positive Pearson correlation was found between the number of juveniles and the eDNA amounts. As we discovered strong PCR inhibition from the seawater samples of the bay, we optimized the eDNA assay protocol for natural seawater samples by adding a further purification step and modification of PCR mixture. The intensive eDNA analysis in the spring of 2017 and 2018 indicated that juvenile chum salmon initially inhabited in shallow waters in the shorefront area and then spread over the bay from January to June. The eDNA data also pointed out that outmigration of juvenile chum salmon to open ocean temporarily suspended in April, possibly being associated with the dynamics of the Oyashio Current as suggested by a previous observation. This study aimed to understand the movement behaviour and utilization distributions of Kori bustards in space and time in the Serengeti ecosystem. A total of 14 individuals were tracked with the aid of GPS (Geographical positioning system) satellite transmitters, and their sexes were identified using DNA analysis. A species utilization distribution was estimated using the Brownian bridge movement model (hereafter dBBMM) in which the probability of being in an area is conditioned by starting and ending (GPS) relocations. Resource selections were analysed by comparing the GPS relocations with locations randomly placed within each individual’s region of utilization in a spatio-temporal approach. Vegetation information was derived from a Serengeti GIS vegetation map and Data Centre and was reclassified as Open grassland, Dense grassland, Shrubbed grassland, Treed grassland, Shrubland, and Woodland. The Shannon diversity index for vegetation was calculated based on the original vegetation classification. Used versus non-used habitats were contrasted using a generalized linear mixed-effects model with a binomial distribution. The results indicated that males were 21.5% more mobile than females, and movements were 6.3% more diffuse during the non-breeding period compared to the breeding period (7.59 versus 7.14, respectively). Contrasting models indicated that males preferred more open grasslands during the non-breeding period and also preferred closed and shrubbed grassland during the breeding period. Females preferred more woody vegetation during the non-breeding season compared to the breeding season. The most parsimonious model indicated that females preferred to stay closer to rivers and diverse areas during the non-breeding period whereas males preferred areas that were farther from rivers and homogenous. Homogeneous areas were preferred during the breeding period, and heterogeneous areas were preferred during the non-breeding period. We conclude that the movement behaviours of Kori bustards changes with the season and habitat. Water-quality monitoring in rivers often focuses on the concentrations of sediments and nutrients, constituents that can smother biota and cause eutrophication. However, the physical and economic constraints of manual sampling prohibit data collection at the frequency required to adequately capture the variation in concentrations through time. Here, we developed models to predict total suspended solids (TSS) and oxidized nitrogen (NOx) concentrations based on high-frequency time series of turbidity, conductivity and river level data from in situ sensors in rivers flowing into the Great Barrier Reef lagoon. We fit generalized-linear mixed-effects models with continuous first-order autoregressive correlation structures to water-quality data collected by manual sampling at two freshwater sites and one estuarine site and used the fitted models to predict TSS and NOx from the in situ sensor data. These models described the temporal autocorrelation in the data and handled observations collected at irregular frequencies, characteristics typical of water-quality monitoring data. Turbidity proved a useful and generalizable surrogate of TSS, with high predictive ability in the estuarine and fresh water sites. Turbidity, conductivity and river level served as combined surrogates of NOx. However, the relationship between NOx and the covariates was more complex than that between TSS and turbidity, and consequently the ability to predict NOx was lower and less generalizable across sites than for TSS. Furthermore, prediction intervals tended to increase during events, for both TSS and NOx models, highlighting the need to include measures of uncertainty routinely in water-quality reporting. Our study also highlights that surrogate-based models used to predict sediments and nutrients need to better incorporate temporal components if variance estimates are to be unbiased and model inference meaningful. The transferability of models across sites, and potentially regions, will become increasingly important as organizations move to automated sensing for water-quality monitoring throughout catchments. Translocated saltwater crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus) in the Northern Territory (NT) of Australia often return to their original capture sites, which complicates management interventions aimed at reducing human-crocodile conflict. We examined the spatial events implicated in this homing ability, using ARGOS satellite tracking devices. Five large male C. porosus (3.03 m to 4.02 m TL) were shifted and released 100–320 km from their capture sites, and 3 additional ones (3.67 m to 4.23 m TL) were released at their site of capture as controls. Translocated crocodiles were more mobile than the controls, and moved at sea in the direction of their original capture site. However, they were unable or unwilling to swim around a geographic structure, Cobourg Peninsula, which prevented homing being achieved in all five cases. Two control crocodiles remained near their capture sites, but one, after the first year, made a 900km journey for six months, before returning to its original capture and release site. Genetic analysis of tissue samples from nests across the NT coast demonstrated significant genetic structure across the coast, and confirmed that Cobourg Peninsula contributes to genetic differentiation among populations along the NT coast. Wetlands are one of the most critical resources in Inner Mongolia Plateau. However, the region has experienced severe wetland loss in the context of global change. To quantify the dynamic change and the related driving forces, we extracted wetland information using multi-temporal Landsat images between 1993 and 2013 using ArcGIS platform and man-machine interactive interpretation. Dynamically changing characteristics for the past 20 years were analyzed, including wetland types and spatial distribution patterns of the wetlands in Inner Mongolia. We also performed correlation analysis and generalized linear models to quantify the contribution of natural and human factors to the changes in natural wetland area. Our results indicated that the total area of wetlands was 42421.2 km2 in 1993, and decreased to 38912.4 km2 in 2013, a decline ratio of 8.3%. Meanwhile, all types of wetlands showed a trend of transformation into non-wetlands. Anthropogenic factors led to the loss of natural wetlands in Inner Mongolia. In grasslands, mining coal was the dominant driver for natural wetland loss, while in arable lands, agricultural encroachment and irrigation were the primary driving forces. These findings can provide meaningful information for improving sustainable wetlands management strategies according to local conditions in different sub-regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Arapaima, pirarucu or paiche (Arapaima gigas) is one of the largest freshwater fish in the world, and has a long history of commercial exploitation in the Amazon region. To estimate levels of genetic variability and historical and recent connectivity in Arapaima, we examined variation in eleven microsatellite DNA markers in individuals from 22 localities in Brazil, Colombia, and Peru. The results of analysis of molecular variance, Bayesian clustering and discriminant analysis of principal components showed that Arapaima in our samples represents two major populations, one in the Amazonas and one in the Araguaia-Tocantins River basins. The Amazonas population is further structured by isolation-by-distance with the hydrologically largely unconnected Amapá locality representing the eastern-most extreme of this continuum; gene flow predominates at distances of less than 1500 km with localities separated by over 2000 km dominated by genetic drift and effectively forming different populations. We saw no evidence of multiple species of Arapaima in the Amazonas basin, and analysis of pairwise genetic divergence (FST) with Mantel tests and correlograms indicated that this largest population exhibits a large-scale pattern of isolation-by-distance, with which results from MIGRATE-N agreed. The degree and significance of genetic divergence indicates that most sampled localities represent demographically independent sub-populations, although we did identify several recent migration events between both proximal and more distant localities. The levels of genetic diversity were heterogeneous across sites, including low genetic diversity, effective population sizes, and evidence of genetic bottlenecks in several places. On average the levels of gene diversity and rarefied allelic richness were higher for localities along the Amazonas mainstem than in the tributaries, despite these being the areas of highest fishing pressure, while the lowest values were found in tributary headwaters, where landscape modification is a significant threat. We recommend that managers consider the regional and local threats to these populations and tailor strategies accordingly, strategies which should ensure the ability of young A. gigas to disperse through floodplain corridors to maintain genetic diversity among otherwise sedentary adult sub-populations. Effective conservation and restoration of estuarine wetlands require accurate maps of their historical and current extent, as well as estimated losses of these valued habitats. Existing coast-wide tidal wetland mapping does not explicitly map historical tidal wetlands that are now disconnected from the tides, which represent restoration opportunities; nor does it use water level models or high-resolution elevation data (e.g. lidar) to accurately identify current tidal wetlands. To better inform estuarine conservation and restoration, we generated new maps of current and historical tidal wetlands for the entire contiguous U.S. West Coast (Washington, Oregon, and California). The new maps are based on an Elevation-Based Estuary Extent Model (EBEEM) that combines lidar digital elevation models (DEMs) and water level models to establish the maximum historical extent of tidal wetlands, representing a major step forward in mapping accuracy for restoration planning and analysis of wetland loss. Building from this new base, we also developed an indirect method for mapping tidal wetland losses, and created maps of these losses for 55 estuaries on the West Coast (representing about 97% of historical West Coast vegetated tidal wetland area). Based on these new maps, we estimated that total historical estuary area for the West Coast is approximately 735,000 hectares (including vegetated and nonvegetated areas), and that about 85% of vegetated tidal wetlands have been lost from West Coast estuaries. Losses were highest for major river deltas. The new maps will help interested groups improve action plans for estuarine wetland habitat restoration and conservation, and will also provide a better baseline for understanding and predicting future changes with projected sea level rise. Amazonian floodplains form complex hydrological networks that play relevant roles in global biogeochemical cycles, and bacterial degradation of the organic matter in these systems is key for regional carbon budget. The Amazon undergoes extreme seasonal variations in water level, which produces changes in landscape and diversifies sources of organic inputs into floodplain systems. Although these changes should affect bacterioplankton community composition (BCC), little is known about which factors drive spatial and temporal patterns of bacterioplankton in these Amazonian floodplains. We used high-throughput sequencing (Illumina MiSeq) of the V3-V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene to investigate spatial and temporal patterns of BCC of two size fractions, and their correlation with environmental variables in an Amazon floodplain lake (Lago Grande do Curuai). We found a high degree of novelty in bacterioplankton, as more than half of operational taxonomic units (OTUs) could not be classified at genus level. Spatial habitat heterogeneity and the flood pulse were the main factors shaping free-living (FL) BCC. The gradient of organic matter from transition zone-lake-Amazon River was the main driver for particle-attached (PA) BCC. The BCC reflected the complexity of the system, with more variation in space than in time, although both factors were important drivers of the BCC in this Amazon floodplain system. Four chronologies of the bivalve species Glycymeris pilosa have been constructed along a 300 km gradient of the eastern coastal Adriatic Sea, all of which span the common period of 1982–2015. The chronologies are compared to local and remote environmental drivers suspected to influence the biology of the system, including air and seawater temperature, precipitation and freshwater discharge. The Adriatic-Ionian Bimodal Oscillating System (BiOS), a key oceanographic feature quantified by satellite-derived absolute dynamic topography, is also compared to the chronologies. The chronologies at the two southern sites are more strongly influenced by local river discharge, while the two northern chronologies are more strongly influenced by BiOS. These results highlight the broadscale importance of BiOS to the Adriatic system as well as the heterogeneity of nearshore environmental and drivers of growth. These G. pilosa chronologies provide unique multidecadal, continuous, biological time series to better understand the ecology and fine-scale variability of the Adriatic with potential for other shallow, semi-enclosed seas. The ability to detect founding populations of invasive species or rare species with low number of individuals is important for aquatic ecosystem management. Traditional approaches use historical data, knowledge of the species’ ecology and time-consuming surveys. Within the past decade, environmental DNA (eDNA) has emerged as a powerful additional tracking tool. While much work has been done with animals, comparatively very little has been done with aquatic plants. Here we investigated the transportation and seasonal changes in eDNA concentrations for an invasive aquatic species, Elodea canadensis, in Norway. A specific probe assay was developed using chloroplast DNA to study the fate of the targeted eDNA through space and time. The spatial study used a known source of Elodea canadensis within Lake Nordbytjern 400 m away from the lake outlet flowing into the stream Tveia. The rate of disappearance of E. canadensis eDNA was an order of magnitude loss over about 230 m in the lake and 1550 m in the stream. The time series study was performed monthly from May to October in lake Steinsfjorden harbouring E. canadensis, showing that eDNA concentrations varied by up to three orders of magnitude, peaking during fall. In both studies, the presence of suspended clay or turbidity for some samples did not hamper eDNA analysis. This study shows how efficient eDNA tools may be for tracking aquatic plants in the environment and provides key spatial and temporal information on the fate of eDNA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hydromorphological attributes such as flow width, water extent, and gradient play an important role in river hydrological, biogeochemical, and ecological processes and can help to predict river conveyance capacity, discharge, and flow routing. While there are some river width datasets at global or regional scales, they do not consider temporal variation in river width and do not cover all Australian rivers. We combined detailed mapping of 1.4 million river reaches across the Australian continent with inundation frequency mapping from 27 years of Landsat observations. From these, the average flow width at different recurrence frequencies was calculated for all reaches, having a combined length of 3.3 million km. A parameter γ was proposed to describe the shape of the frequency–width relationship and can be used to classify reaches by the degree to which flow regime tends towards permanent, frequent, intermittent, or ephemeral. Conventional scaling rules relating river width to gradient and contributing catchment area and discharge were investigated, demonstrating that such rules capture relatively little of the real-world variability. Uncertainties mainly occur in multi-channel reaches and reaches with unconnected water bodies. The calculated reach attributes are easily combined with the river vector data in a GIS, which should be useful for research and practical applications such as water resource management, aquatic habitat enhancement, and river engineering and management. Although environmental DNA (eDNA) is increasingly being used to survey for the presence of rare and/or invasive fishes in aquatic systems, the utility of this technique has been limited by a poor understanding of whether and how eDNA concentrations relate to fish density, especially in rivers. We conducted a field study to systematically test whether the eDNA released by a model invasive fish, Silver Carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), was related to the density of this species in a large river. We quantified fish density throughout the 460 km long Illinois River using hydroacoustic surveys at 23 sites while concurrently collecting 192 surface water samples for eDNA analysis. We found that Silver Carp numerical density and biomass density were positively and non-linearly related to eDNA concentration and detection rate. Both eDNA concentration (copy number) and detection rate increased rapidly as Silver Carp density increased but plateaued at moderate densities. These relationships could prove useful for estimating Silver Carp relative abundance in newly invaded locations where population numbers are low to moderate. Sediment flushing can tackle reservoirs siltation and improve sediment flux through dammed rivers. However, the increase of the sediment loading below the dam can trigger a suite of undesired ecological effects in the downstream river reaches. To limit these drawbacks, sediment flushing can be controlled, by jointly regulating the sediment concentration of the evacuated water and the streamflow in the downstream channel. In this paper, we report on ten controlled sediment flushing operations (CSFOs), carried out between 2006 and 2012 in the central Italian Alps, at four hydropower reservoirs. These CSFOs displayed specific common traits: (i) Limits were set by the local environmental authorities concerning the allowable suspended sediment concentration. (ii) Reservoirs were fully drawn-down, earth-moving equipment was used to dislodge sediment, and the downstream water discharge was increased, compared to baseflow, by operating upstream intakes. (iii) Abiotic and biotic measurements in selected downstream reaches (before, during, and after the CSFOs) represented an integral part of the operations. In contrast, significant differences characterize the hydropower facilities (elevation and storage of reservoirs, in particular) as well as the basic CSFOs parameters (i.e., season, duration, mass and grain-size of the evacuated sediment, suspended sediment concentration). The macroinvertebrate assemblages resulted noticeably impacted by the CSFOs. In the short term, a significant density drop was observed, slightly influenced by the extent of the perturbation. In contrast, the latter appeared to control the assemblages contraction in terms of richness, according to the different sensitivity to sediment stress of the different taxa. The time employed to recover pre-CSFO standard ranged from few months to just under one year, and the related patterns would seem mostly correlated to the flushing season and to further site specificities. The density of trout populations was impacted as well, thus suggesting the adoption of mitigating strategies as removal by electrofishing before, and repopulation after the CSFO. Determining correlates of density for large carnivores is important to understand their ecological requirements and develop conservation strategies. Of several earlier density studies conducted globally, relatively few addressed a scale (usually >1000 km2) that allows inference on correlates of density over heterogeneous landscapes. We deployed 164 camera trap stations covering ~2500 km2 across five areas characterized by broadly different vegetation cover in the Udzungwa Mountains, Tanzania, to investigate correlates of density for a widespread and adaptable carnivore, the leopard (Panthera pardus). We modelled data in a spatially explicit capture-recapture framework, with both biotic and abiotic covariates hypothesised to influence density. We found that leopard density increased with distance to protected area boundary (mean±SE estimated effect = 0.44±0.20), a proxy for both protected area extent and distance from surrounding human settlements. We estimated mean density at 4.22 leopards/100 km2 (85% CI = 3.33‒5.35/100 km2), with no variation across habitat types. Results indicate that protected area extent and anthropogenic disturbance limit leopard populations whereas no support was found for prey availability and trap array as drivers of leopard density. Such vulnerability is relevant to the conservation of the leopard, which is generally considered more resilient to human disturbance than other large cats. Our findings support the notion that protected areas are important to preserve viable population of leopards, increasingly so in times of unprecedented habitat fragmentation. Nigerians depend on fish for maintaining diverse and healthy diets. Fish are a key source of protein and micronutrients, both of which are important for healthy diets. Some research has shown that forests provide important ecosystem functions that support the productive capacity and sustainability of inland fisheries. Our study aims to empirically assess the relationship between forest cover around rivers and fish consumption. We use data from the Living Standards Measurement Survey (LSMS) and spatially merge household and village data with forest cover and river maps. We estimate the relationship between forest cover around rivers and average village fresh fish consumption, while also accounting for other socio-economic and geographical determinants. We find that that the density of forest cover around rivers is positively and significantly correlated with village consumption of fresh fish. Our results suggest that forests influence the consumption of fresh fish by improving the productivity of inland fisheries and increasing the availability of fish. Aquatic habitats tend to be overlooked in debates on land use and food production, and yet can be critically important sources of nutrient-rich foods that are limited in rural diets in developing countries, particularly for the poor. Clearing forests for agriculture in order to produce more agricultural crops might have the unintended consequence of reducing another important food source. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
