One of the key phenomena that determine the fluorescence of nanocrystals is the nonradiative Auger-Meitner recombination of excitons. This nonradiative rate affects the nanocrystals' fluorescence intensity, excited state lifetime, and quantum yield. Whereas most of the above properties can be directly measured, the quantum yield is the most difficult to assess. Here we place semiconductor nanocrystals inside a tunable plasmonic nanocavity with subwavelength spacing and modulate their radiative de-excitation rate by changing the cavity size. This allows us to determine absolute values of their fluorescence quantum yield under specific excitation conditions. Moreover, as expected considering the enhanced Auger-Meitner rate for higher multiple excited states, increasing the excitation rate reduces the quantum yield of the nanocrystals.

Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) stand at the forefront of a variety of photonic applications given their narrow spectral bandwidth and near-unity luminescence efficiency. Integrating desired forms of QD films into photonic systems without compromising their optical or transport characteristics is the key to bridging the gap between expectations and outcomes. Here, we devise a dual-ligand passivation system comprising photocrosslinkable ligands and dispersing ligands to enable QDs to be universally compatible with solution-based patterning techniques. The successful control on the structure of both ligands allows multiscale, direct patterning of the dual-ligand QDs on various substrates via commercialized photolithography (i-line) or inkjet printing systems without compromising the optical properties of QDs or the optoelectronic performances of the devices implementing them. Our approach offers a versatile way of creating various structures of luminescent QDs in a cost-effective and non-destructive manner, and thus enables the implementation of QDs in a range of photonic applications.

The past decade has witnessed remarkable progress in the device efficiency of quantum dot light-emitting diodes based on the framework of organic-inorganic hybrid device structure. The striking improvement notwithstanding, the following conundrum remains underexplored: state-of-the-art devices with seemingly unfavorable energy landscape exhibit barrierless hole injection initiated even at sub-band gap voltages. Here, we unravel that the cause of barrierless hole injection stems from the Fermi level alignment derived by the surface states. The reorganized energy landscape provides macroscopic electrostatic potential gain to promote hole injection to quantum dots. The energy level alignment surpasses the Coulombic attraction induced by a charge employed in quantum dots which adjust the local carrier injection barrier of opposite charges by a relatively small margin. Our finding elucidates how quantum dots accommodate barrierless carrier injection and paves the way to a generalized design principle for efficient electroluminescent devices employing nanocrystal emitters., Hybrid quantum dot light-emitting diodes exhibit barrier-less carrier injection despite a seemingly unfavourable energy landscape. Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are nanosized semiconductors whose electronic features are dictated by the quantum confinement effect. The optical, electrical, and chemical properties of QDs are influenced by their dimensions and surface landscape. The surface of II–VI and IV–VI QDs has been extensively explored; however, in-depth investigations on the surface of III–V QDs are still lagging behind. This Perspective discusses the current understanding of the surface of III–V QDs, outlines deep trap states presented by surface defects, and suggests strategies to overcome challenges associated with deep traps. Lastly, we discuss a route to create well-defined facets in III–V QDs by providing a platform for surface studies and a recently reported approach in atomistic understanding of covalent III–V QD surfaces using the electron counting model with fractional dangling bonds., Unveiling the atomistic surface structure of colloidal quantum dots may provide the route to rational design of highly performing III–V nanocrystals with control over energy levels position, surface energy, trap passivation, and heterojunction interface.

Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals, referred to as quantum dots (QDs), have unique and superb photophysical properties, promising a variety of applications ranging from optoelectronics and energy harvesting to agriculture. The last decade witnessed a tremendous advance in QDs and their successful debut in displays, and now, QDs are equipped with environmental benignity to expand their territory to everyday life. From this perspective, the current research status and future perspective of environmentally benign QDs as building blocks for light-generating and light-harvesting applications are provided. Also provided is an overview of the progress made in the chemistry (colloidal synthesis, surface chemistry, and heterostructuring) and in their photophysical and electrical properties from the viewpoint of their use in light-emitting or light-harvesting applications. Grounded on the current status of heavy-metal-free QDs compared with cutting-edge technologies, the perspective of environmentally benign QDs for practical use and future research directions is discussed.

Quasi-type II heterostructured nanocrystals (NCs) have been of particular interest due to their great potential for controlling the interplay of charge carriers. However, the lack of material choices for quasi-type II NCs restricts the accessible emission wavelength from red to near-infrared (NIR), which hinders their use in light-emitting applications that demand a wide range of visible colors. Herein, we demonstrate a new class of quasi-type II nanoemitters formulated in ZnSe/ZnSe 1- X Te X /ZnSe seed/spherical quantum well/shell heterostructures (SQWs) whose emission wavelength ranges from blue to orange. In a given geometry, ZnSe 1- X Te X emissive layers grown between the ZnSe seed and the shell layer are strained to fit into the surrounding media, and thus, the lattice mismatch between ZnSe 1- X Te X and ZnSe is effectively alleviated. In addition, composition of the ZnSe 1- X Te X emissive layer and the dimension of the ZnSe shell layer are engineered to tailor the distribution and energy of electron and hole wave functions. Benefitting from the capabilities to tune the charge carriers on demand and to form defect-free heterojunctions, ZnSe/ZnSe 1- X Te X /ZnSe/ZnS NCs show near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield ( PL QY > 90 % ) in a broad range of emission wavelengths (peak PL from 450 nm to 600 nm). Finally, we exemplify dichromatic white NC-based light-emitting diodes (NC-LEDs) employing the mixed layer of blue- and yellow-emitting ZnSe/ZnSe 1- X Te X /ZnSe/ZnS SQW NCs.

The potential profile and the energy level offset of core/shell heterostructured nanocrystals (h-NCs) determine the photophysical properties and the charge transport characteristics of h-NC solids. However, limited material choices for heavy metal-free III-V/II-VI h-NCs pose challenges in comprehensive control of the potential profile. Herein, we present an unprecedented approach to such control by steering dipole moments at the interface of III-V/II-VI h-NCs. The controllable heterovalency at the interface is responsible for interfacial dipole moments that result in the vacuum-level shift, providing an additional knob for the control of optical and electrical characteristics of h-NCs. We capitalize on the atomic precision with which to synthesize h-NCs by correlating interfacial dipole moments to photochemical stability and optoelectronic performance of resulting h-NCs.

Conventional stretchable electronics entailing the adoption of a wavy design, a neutral mechanical plane, and a conformal contact between abiotic and biotic interfaces have shown diverse skin-interfaced applications. Despite such remarkable progress, there have been challenged to be evolved to intelligent skin prosthetics due to the absence of the monolithic integration of neuromorphic constituents into individual sensing and actuating components. Herein, we demonstrate a golden tortoise beetle-inspired stretchable sensory-neuromorphic system comprising an artificial mechanoreceptor, an artificial synapse, and an epidermal photonic actuator as three biomimetic functionalities that correspond to a stretchable capacitive pressure sensor, a resistive random-access memory, and a quantum dot light-emitting diode, respectively. This system features a rigid-island structure interconnected with a sinter-free printable conductor (stretchability ~ 160%, conductivity ~ 18,550 S/cm), which allows one to improve both areal density and structural reliability while avoiding the thermal degradation of heat-sensitive stretchable electronic components. Moreover, even in the skin deformation range, the system accurately recognizes various patterned stimuli via an artificial neural network with training/inferencing functions. Our new bioinspired system is therefore expected to be an important step toward the implementation of intelligent wearable electronics.

Establishing multi-colour patterning technology for colloidal quantum dots is critical for realising high-resolution displays based on the material. Here, we report a solution-based processing method to form patterns of quantum dots using a light-driven ligand crosslinker, ethane-1,2-diyl bis(4-azido-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzoate). The crosslinker with two azide end groups can interlock the ligands of neighbouring quantum dots upon exposure to UV, yielding chemically robust quantum dot films. Exploiting the light-driven crosslinking process, different colour CdSe-based core-shell quantum dots can be photo-patterned; quantum dot patterns of red, green and blue primary colours with a sub-pixel size of 4 μm × 16 μm, corresponding to a resolution of >1400 pixels per inch, are demonstrated. The process is non-destructive, such that photoluminescence and electroluminescence characteristics of quantum dot films are preserved after crosslinking. We demonstrate that red crosslinked quantum dot light-emitting diodes exhibiting an external quantum efficiency as high as 14.6% can be obtained., Designing high-resolution displays based on colloidal quantum dots remains a challenge. Here, the authors demonstrate a photo-patterning method to develop CdSe-based core-shell quantum dots patterns of red, green and blue colours with diameters ranging from 7 to 20 nm and resolution of 1400 pixels per inch.

Endowing quantum dots (QDs) with robustness and durability have been one of the most important issues in this field, since the major limitations of QDs in practical applications are their thermal and oxidative instabilities. In this work, we propose a facile and effective passivation method to enhance the photochemical stability of QDs using polymeric double shell structures from thiol-terminated poly(methyl methacrylate-b-glycidyl methacrylate) (P(MMA-b-GMA)-SH) block copolymer ligands. To generate a densely cross-linked network, the cross-linking reaction of GMA epoxides in the PGMA block was conducted using a Lewis acid catalyst under an ambient environment to avoid affecting the photophysical properties of the pristine QDs. This provides QDs encapsulated with robust double layers consisting of highly transparent PMMA outer-shell and oxidation-protective cross-linked inner shell. Consequently, the resulting QDs exhibited exceptional tolerance to heat and oxidants when dispersed in organic solvents or QD-nanocomposite films, as demonstrated under various harsh conditions with respect to temperature and oxidant species. The present approach not only provides simple yet effective chemical means to enhance the thermochemical stability of QDs, but also offers a promising platform for the hybridization of QDs with polymeric materials for developing robust light-emitting or light-harvesting devices. A treatment that makes nanoparticles robust and thus more useful for optoelectronics has been developed by researchers in South Korea. Quantum dots are semiconductor particles just a few tens of nanometers in diameter. These tiny dimensions restrict the motion of electrons, which gives the dots properties similar to those of an atom. Specifically, they efficiently absorb and emit spectrally pure light, making them useful for displays, photodetectors and solar cells. However, quantum dots are sensitive to heat, moisture and oxidization. Joona Bang, Korea University, Seoul, and colleagues improved the thermochemical stability of quantum dots by surrounding them with a physical barrier to suppress the creation of surface defects. This protective shell was made using a cross-linkable polymer ligand and was shown to reduce the deleterious effects of exposure to high temperatures and an oxidizing agent. Quantum Dot: Shell cross-linking endows stability: Simple and facile cross-linking chemistry was employed to form the robust network shell on the quantum dot (QD) surface without altering the photoluminescence property of pristine QDs. The resulting shell cross-linked QDs exhibited exceptional tolerance against heat or chemical oxidations. And the exterior brush in QDs can be readily tunable and provide the miscibility with host polymer matrix, resulting in well-defined QD-nanocomposite films. This encapsulation strategy can be generally applicable to many other nanoparticles that are vulnerable to various external stimuli.

Colloidal CdSe nanocrystals (NCs) overcoated with an ultrathick CdS shell, also known as dot-in-bulk (DiB) structures, can support two types of excitons, one of which is core-localized and the other, shell-localized. In the case of weak "sub-single-exciton" pumping, emission alternates between the core- and shell-related channels, which leads to two-color light. This property makes these structures uniquely suited for a variety of photonic applications as well as ideal model systems for realizing complex excitonic quasi-particles that do not occur in conventional core/shell NCs. Here, we show that the DiB design can enable an unusual regime in which the same long-lived resident electron can endow trionlike characteristics to either of the two excitons of the DiB NC (core- or shell-based). These two spectrally distinct trion states are apparent in the measured photoluminescence (PL) and spin dynamics of core and shell excitons conducted over a wide range of temperatures and applied magnetic fields. Low-temperature PL measurements indicate that core- and shell-based trions are characterized by a nearly ideal (∼100%) emission quantum yield, suggesting the strong suppression of Auger recombination for both types of excitations. Polarization-resolved PL experiments in magnetic fields of up to 60 T reveal that the core- and the shell-localized trions exhibit remarkably similar spin dynamics, which in both cases are controlled by spin-flip processes involving a heavy hole.

We developed radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtered amorphous vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) film to use in place of typical PEDOT:PSS or solution-processed metal oxide hole injection layer (HIL) in quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs). The electrical, optical, and chemical properties of the sputtered V2O5 HIL were correlated with the oxygen flow rate at room temperature. At optimized sputtering conditions, the V2O5 film showed a high optical transparency of 91.93% in the visible wavelength region and a work function of 4.73 eV, which is suitable for HIL in QLEDs. We also investigated the performance of QLEDs with sputtered V2O5 HIL as a function of oxygen flow rate. The QLEDs with optimized V2O5 HIL exhibited a maximum luminance of 198,542 cd/m2, a turn-on voltage of 1.7 V, a max external quantum efficiency of about 8.3%, and a current efficiency of 20.3 cd/A, thereby making it comparable to typical PEDOT:PSS HIL-based QLEDs. The successful operation of QLEDs with sputtered V2O5 as HIL demonstrated that it could be used instead of other materials for next-generation large-area QLED displays.

The effective implantation of conductive and charge storage materials into flexible frames has been strongly demanded for the development of flexible supercapacitors. Here, we introduce metallic cellulose paper-based supercapacitor electrodes with excellent energy storage performance by minimizing the contact resistance between neighboring metal and/or metal oxide nanoparticles using an assembly approach, called ligand-mediated layer-by-layer assembly. This approach can convert the insulating paper to the highly porous metallic paper with large surface areas that can function as current collectors and nanoparticle reservoirs for supercapacitor electrodes. Moreover, we demonstrate that the alternating structure design of the metal and pseudocapacitive nanoparticles on the metallic papers can remarkably increase the areal capacitance and rate capability with a notable decrease in the internal resistance. The maximum power and energy density of the metallic paper-based supercapacitors are estimated to be 15.1 mW cm−2 and 267.3 μWh cm−2, respectively, substantially outperforming the performance of conventional paper or textile-type supercapacitors., With ligand-mediated layer-by-layer assembly between metal nanoparticles and small organic molecules, the authors prepare metallic paper electrodes for supercapacitors with high power and energy densities. This approach could be extended to various electrodes for portable/wearable electronics.

Reviewed in this paper is the recent progress on the interfacial engineering of core/shell heterostructured nanocrystal quantum dots (NQDs) for light-emitting applications, with focus on the composition (energy) gradient interfaces between the core and the shell. The engineered interfaces mitigate the structural stress between the core and the shell and thus reduce the chance to create misfit defects that act as efficient non-radiative recombination centers. In addition, the resultant smoothening of the potential profiles across the interfaces leads to the strong suppression of non-radiative Auger recombination. Efforts to engineer the interfacial structures further promote the optical performances of NQDs and benefit the light-emitting applications utilizing NQDs.

Coupling to phonon modes is a primary mechanism of excitonic dephasing and energy loss in semiconductors. However, low-energy phonons in colloidal quantum dots and their coupling to excitons are poorly understood because their experimental signatures are weak and usually obscured by the unavoidable inhomogeneous broadening of colloidal dot ensembles. We use multidimensional coherent spectroscopy at cryogenic temperatures to extract the homogeneous nonlinear optical response of excitons in a CdSe/CdZnS core/shell colloidal quantum dot ensemble. A comparison to the simulation provides evidence that the observed lineshapes arise from the coexistence of confined and delocalized vibrational modes, both of which couple strongly to excitons in CdSe/CdZnS colloidal quantum dots.

We perform two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy on CdSe/CdZnS core-shell colloidal quantum dots at cryogenic temperatures. In the two-dimensional spectra, sidebands due to electronic coupling with CdSe lattice LO-phonon modes are observed to have evolutions deviating from the exponential dephasing expected from Markovian spectral diffusion, which is instantaneous and memoryless. Comparison to simulations provides evidence that LO-phonon coupling induces energy-gap fluctuations on the finite timescales of nuclear motion. The femtosecond resolution of our technique probes exciton dynamics directly on the timescales of phonon coupling in nanocrystals.

One-quantum and zero-quantum multi-dimensional coherent spectroscopy are used to study CdSe colloidal quantum dots at cryogenic temperatures. Each technique reveals unique aspects of the electron-phonon coupling dynamics in the material.

Electrical communication between an enzyme and an electrode is one of the most important factors in determining the performance of biofuel cells. Here, we introduce a glucose oxidase-coated metallic cotton fiber-based hybrid biofuel cell with efficient electrical communication between the anodic enzyme and the conductive support. Gold nanoparticles are layer-by-layer assembled with small organic linkers onto cotton fibers to form metallic cotton fibers with extremely high conductivity (>2.1×104 S cm−1), and are used as an enzyme-free cathode as well as a conductive support for the enzymatic anode. For preparation of the anode, the glucose oxidase is sequentially layer-by-layer-assembled with the same linkers onto the metallic cotton fibers. The resulting biofuel cells exhibit a remarkable power density of 3.7 mW cm−2, significantly outperforming conventional biofuel cells. Our strategy to promote charge transfer through electrodes can provide an important tool to improve the performance of biofuel cells., Biofuel cells offer biocompatibility and operation at mild conditions, but application is limited by relatively low output power. Here the authors use layer-by-layer assembly for glucose oxidase-coated metallic cotton fibers for use as electrodes in a hybrid biofuel cell to achieve high output power.

We report the photocatalytic conversion of CO2 to CH4 using CuPt alloy nanoclusters anchored on TiO2. As the size of CuPt alloy nanoclusters decreases, the photocatalytic activity improves significantly. Small CuPt nanoclusters strongly bind CO2 intermediates and have a stronger interaction with the TiO2 support, which also contributes to an increased CH4 generation rate. The alloying and size effects prove to be the key to efficient CO2 reduction, highlighting a strategic platform for the design of photocatalysts for CO2 conversion.

Vortex formation is observed in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images of colloidal CdS nanorod (NR) aggregates. Upon adding polar (poor) solvents into the NR dispersion, the NRs passivated with alkylphosphonic acids start flocculating. When NR clusters are deposited on a TEM grid, the tips of the NRs are immobilized on the substrate, and capillary forces give rise to a net inward tilting as the solvent evaporates, eventually leading to the formation of vortices. Solvent polarity turns out to play a critical role in controlling the structure of vortices. Fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) of the ensembles reveals that the vortex structures have profound influence on the energy transfer rate within the NR assembly.

Ratiometric pressure sensitive paints (r-PSPs) are all-optical probes for monitoring oxygen flows in the vicinity of complex or miniaturized surfaces. They typically consist of a porous binder embedding mixtures of a reference and a sensor chromophore exhibiting oxygen-insensitive and oxygen-responsive luminescence, respectively. Here, we demonstrate the first example of an r-PSP based on a single two-color emitter that removes limitations of r-PSPs based on chromophore mixtures such as different temperature dependencies of the two chromophores, cross-readout between the reference and sensor signals and phase segregation. In our approach, we utilize a novel "double-sensor" r-PSP that features two spectrally separated emission bands with opposite responses to the O2 pressure, which boosts the sensitivity with respect to traditional reference-sensor pairs. Specifically, we use two-color-emitting dot-in-bulk CdSe/CdS core/shell nanocrystals, exhibiting red and green emission bands from their core and shell states, whose intensities are respectively enhanced and quenched in response to the increased oxygen partial pressure that effectively tunes the position of the nanocrystal's Fermi energy. This leads to a strong and reversible ratiometric response at the single particle level and an over 100% enhancement in the pressure sensitivity. Our proof-of-concept r-PSPs further exhibit suppressed cross-readout thanks to zero spectral overlap between the core and shell luminescence bands and a temperature-independent ratiometric response between 0 and 70 °C

Intracellular pH is a key parameter in many biological mechanisms and cell metabolism and is used to detect and monitor cancer formation and brain or heart diseases. pH-sensing is typically performed by fluorescence microscopy using pH-responsive dyes. Accuracy is limited by the need for quantifying the absolute emission intensity in living biological samples. An alternative with a higher sensitivity and precision uses probes with a ratiometric response arising from the different pH-sensitivity of two emission channels of a single emitter. Current ratiometric probes are complex constructs suffering from instability and cross-readout due to their broad emission spectra. Here, we overcome such limitations using a single-particle ratiometric pH probe based on dot-in-bulk CdSe/CdS nanocrystals (NCs). These nanostructures feature two fully-separated narrow emissions with different pH sensitivity arising from radiative recombination of core- and shell-localized excitons. The core emission is nearly independent of the pH, whereas the shell luminescence increases in the 3–11 pH range, resulting in a cross-readout-free ratiometric response as strong as 600%. In vitro microscopy demonstrates that the ratiometric response in biologic media resembles the precalibralation curve obtained through far-field titration experiments. The NCs show good biocompatibility, enabling us to monitor in real-time the pH in living cells.

Development of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) based on colloidal quantum dots is driven by attractive properties of these fluorophores such as spectrally narrow, tunable emission and facile processibility via solution-based methods. A current obstacle towards improved LED performance is an incomplete understanding of the roles of extrinsic factors, such as non-radiative recombination at surface defects, versus intrinsic processes, such as multicarrier Auger recombination or electron-hole separation due to applied electric field. Here we address this problem with studies that correlate the excited state dynamics of structurally engineered quantum dots with their emissive performance within LEDs. We find that because of significant charging of quantum dots with extra electrons, Auger recombination greatly impacts both LED efficiency and the onset of efficiency roll-off at high currents. Further, we demonstrate two specific approaches for mitigating this problem using heterostructured quantum dots, either by suppressing Auger decay through the introduction of an intermediate alloyed layer, or by using an additional shell that impedes electron transfer into the quantum dot to help balance electron and hole injection., Auger recombination is a loss process that considerably reduces the efficiency of many quantum-dot light-emitting diodes. Here the authors demonstrate that designs such as heterostructure quantum dots can considerably suppress Auger decay in light-emitting diodes.

The influence of the morphology of quantum dot (QD)-semiconducting polymer hybrid emission layers on the performance of quantum dot-based light emitting diodes (QLEDs) is systematically investigated. Chemically grafted QD-semiconducting polymer hybrids are fabricated by the ligand exchange procedure between CdSe/CdxZn1−xS QDs and a new block copolymer consisting of a carbazole-based electroactive block with a low highest occupied molecular orbital level and a disulfide-based anchor block. The performance of QLEDs with hybrid emission layers is compared with QLEDs utilizing QD-only and physically mixed QD/polymer emission layers. It is shown that only in the emission layers formed by chemically grafted hybrids QDs are evenly distributed throughout the semiconducting polymer matrix. This leads to improved charge transport balance and suppressed photoluminescence quenching of QDs. As a result, hybrid QLEDs with the peak external quantum efficiency of 5.6% and the peak luminance of 21 707 cd m−2 which outperform the conventional devices with QD-only emission layers are fabricated.

Quantum dot-based light emitting diodes have extensively been investigated over the past two decades in order to utilize high color purity and photophysical stability of quantum dots. In this review, progresses on the preparation of quantum dots, structural design of electroluminescence devices using quantum dots, and printing processes for full-color quantum dot display will be discussed. The obstacles originating from the use of heavy metals, large hole injection barrier, and imperfect printing processes for pixilation have limited the practical applications of quantum dot-based devices. It is expected that recent complementary approaches on materials, device structures, and new printing processes would accelerate the realization of quantum dot displays.
