Primitive meteorites contain a few parts per million (ppm) of pristine interstellar grains that provide information on nuclear and chemical processes in stars. Their interstellar origin is proven by highly anomalous isotopic ratios, varying more than 1000-fold for elements such as C and N. Most grains isolated thus far are stable only under highly reducing conditions (C/O greater than 1), and apparently are 'stardust' formed in stellar atmospheres. Microdiamonds, of median size about 10 A, are most abundant (about 400-1800 ppm) but least understood. They contain anomalous noble gases including Xe-HL, which shows the signature of the r- and p-processes. Silicon carbide, of grain size 0.2-10 microns and abundance about 6 ppm, shows the signature of the s-process and apparently comes mainly from red giant carbon (AGB) stars of 1-3 solar masses. Some grains appear to be not less than 10 exp 9 a older than the solar system. Graphite spherules of grain size 0.8-7 microns and abundance less than 2 ppm contain highly anomalous C and noble gases, as well as large amounts of fossil Mg-26 from the decay of extinct Al-26. They seem to come from at least three sources, probably AGB stars, novae, and Wolf-Rayet stars.

It is reported here that interstellar graphite and SiC grains recovered from the Murchison CM2 chondritic meteorite have large abundances of Mg-26 from the decay of extinct Al-26. The deduced initial Al-26/Al-27 ratios range up to 0.06 in graphite and 0.2 in SiC. This is 1200 to 4000 times the maximum values found in refractory inclusions in primitive meteorites. All proposed stellar sources of carbonaceous dust also produced Al-26, but the highest Al-26/Al-27 ratios found in these grains seem to rule out Wolf-Rayet stars and supernovae. The aluminum abundance correlates with that of nitrogen, suggesting that the aluminum condensed as aluminum nitride.

Graphite grains 1-4 microns in diameter have been identified in the Murchison C2 chondrite. The interstellar origin of these grains is demonstrated by their C-12/C-13 ratio, which ranges from 0.09 to 16 times the solar system value, and by the presence of nearly monoisotopic Ne-22 from the decay of Na-22. The grains apparently formed in the outflows of n novae and red giants, and demonstrate that graphite can form as a circumstellar condensate.

Only meteoritic fragments small enough to be gently decelerated by the atmosphere (10 to the -12th g to 10 to the -6th g) can deliver organic matter intact. The amount of such 'soft-landed' organic carbon can be estimated from data for the infall rate of meteoritic matter. At present rates, only about 0.0006 g/sq cm intact organic carbon would accumulate in 100 million years, but at the higher rates of about four billion yr ago, about 20 g/sq cm may have accumulated in the few hundred million years between the last cataclysmic impact and the beginning of life. It may have included some biologically important compounds that did not form by abiotic synthesis on earth.

Silicon carbide has been identified in two separates from the Murray carbonaceous chondrite that are enriched 20,000-fold in isotopically anomalous neon and xenon. The SiC is present in the form of crystalline grains 0.1-1 micron in size. Cubic and 111-plane-twinned cubic are the most common ordered polytypes observed so far. The anomalous isotopic composition of its carbon, nitrogen, and silicon indicates a presolar origin, probably in the atmospheres of red giants. An additional silicon- and oxygen-rich phase shows large isotropic anomalies in nitrogen and silicon, also associated with a presolar origin.

Primitive meteorites contain up to 400 ppm of a very fine-grained type of carbon tentatively called C-delta. Evidence is presented here that part of all of the C-delta is primary, not shock-produced, diamond formed by stellar condensation as a metastable phase. It appears that interstellar dust contains diamond.
