The serials literature for 2012-13 reflects the ongoing challenges faced by members of the serials information chain. Problems with workflow, systems, electronic exchange of information, and control of proprietary information still occur and can be seen documented in the literature. However, the literature also reflects growing determination that this state of affairs can and should change. Serialists are experimenting with new models of pricing and delivery of content. They are developing standards and protocols to facilitate more seamless communication of accurate information. The changes that need to occur and the difficult decisions that need to be made to create this new, well-functioning system can clearly be seen in the literature under review. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, it has become widely recognized that in the case of monographs, the traditional business model for books is losing its sustainability. Academic publishers have been forced to become more selective in the books they publish; authors, in particular young researchers and first-time authors, have found it harder to find a press willing to publish their work. In response to the economic restraints of printed monographs, many publishers and academic institutes, in particular research libraries, have started to experiment with digital and open access (OA) publication of monographs. OAPEN is the first international project to develop an open access model for publishers and stakeholders in scholarly communication. OAPEN stands for Open Access Publishing in European Networks1. It is a 30- month project co-funded by the European Union2, to develop and implement an OA publication model for peer-reviewed academic books in the humanities and social sciences (HSS). The article traces the development of the comic strip series "A Tale of the Jungle Imps," written by George Randolph Chester with artwork by Winsor McCay. This series began in early January of 1903, when the "Cincinnati Enquirer" run advertisements to announce the "Comic Pictures in Colors" feature. It parodied Rudyard Kipling's "Just So Stories" by featuring fanciful stories on how particular animals acquired their most distinguishing characteristics. The strip's format differed slightly from other comic strips at the time.

The article discusses the serialization of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the "Human Target" comic series published by DC Comics Inc. The disaster was encapsulated in the story "The Unshredded Man," written by Peter Milligan with art by Javier Pulido. Words and image combined to illustrate fiction and reality. The narrator's act of fictional remembrance demanded remembrance from readers. The manner in which Milligan and Pulido serialized and sequenced the events of September 11 enjoined readers to fill in the blanks that separated the images and events that were, and were not, depicted.

Is it possible to predict the future of serials work? Not with perfect accuracy, of course - but to do so imperfectly is both possible and imperative. We need to be looking ahead and asking questions like these: What are the implications of the open access movement for serials staff? Will the information economy of the future be driven by problems of scarcity or problems of abundance, and what does each scenario mean for the library? The areas in which we work are especially volatile, and both we and those we serve will benefit greatly if we learn how to anticipate and prepare for change, rather than simply reacting to it after it happens.
