Ever since library consortia were established in India, academic and research libraries started gaining online access to more number of journals than what they were individually subscribing before. To find out how well Indian researchers make use of the additional resources, the use made of journals either for publishing or for citing by researchers in three Indian institutions - a unitary university, a CSIR laboratory and a DAE theoretical research institution was examined. It was found that in all three institutions, not more than 20% of journals for which they have access through consortium or through their own funds as part of their subscription have been used. Thus the large number of journals that publishers offer through their big deals seem to benefit the publishers rather than the researchers. It is suggest that academic and research librarians in India and library consortia use citation analysis as an "aid in pruning subscriptions to unused journals, eventually alleviating misapportioned moneys spending in the serials selection process". A challenge for school libraries is the identification and management of electronic and paper resources that teachers and students need. Courtenay Middle School, on Vancouver Island, has begun to assemble collections of mediated online links, in addition to the traditional paper and video resources, and to ask fundamental questions related to ongoing collection development and the creation of communities of contributors. For almost half a century Romania was under a totalitarian regime. In times of severe censorship and information control the communist regime promoted public libraries. This paper will present the main phases of the public library system development and discuss how the state's emphasis on providing large collections of books influenced library services. As part of an oral history project, this paper will use memories of people who worked in public libraries of various sizes in the 1970s and the 1980s, archival documents and secondary sources to contribute to a more nuanced discussion about the recent history of Romanian public libraries. What were the phases of the development of the national library system and how important was the library collection for the institutional survival of the public library? In view of the importance of indigenous knowledge in development process, this paper investigated the efforts of selected federal university libraries in South West, Nigeria in indigenous knowledge collection development and preservation. The study adopted a descriptive survey design that involved the use structured questionnaire, unstructured interviews and observation as instruments for data collection. Seventy six (76) professional librarians constituted the target population of the study; therefore seventy six (76) copies of questionnaire were administered to the professional librarians in the selected university libraries. The data collected using the questionnaire complemented by interview and observation were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Findings from the study revealed the tremendous efforts of selected university libraries in IK collection development and preservation in the libraries as the study revealed the existence of IK materials. It also established that dearth of fund and linguistic problem were the challenges facing the collection development and preservation of IK in the selected university libraries. It therefore recommended that the university libraries should liaised with the international bodies for financial support for the sustainability of IK resources collection development and preservation in the libraries. This research aims to provide the detailed description of the implementation of library's roles in supporting the World Class University in Universitas Airlangga and to give an overview of the obstacles that will be faced by the library of Universitas Airlangga in carrying out its role to support World Class University. This research used descriptive-qualitative research method to describe the implementation of library role in supporting world class university especially in providing information to support academic community research. The subject of this research is the activities conducted by five (5) libraries to support world class university such as Universitas Indonesia (UI), Institute Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Intitute Pertanian Bogor (IPB), Universitas Gadjam Mada (UGM) and Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR). Informants in this research are people who are considered to understand about the implementation of policies on world class university in the library. The data was collected by interview, live observation, and sorting supporting documents, such as: regulation letters, decree, references about World Class University, and other documents. The result of this research is about collection development to support WCU, human resource, library services and the strategic to support WCU. Conclusion of this paper is University Libraries have a strategic role in supporting the university towards world class university. But from a variety of strategies that can be seen that the university that is already included in the 500 WCU has a strategy that is more focused and clear and supported by large funding. The increasing availability and prominence of e-books has led to a perception in some quarters that the requirement for physical books is decreasing, as most, or all scholarly material is openly available in digital form. Some academic administrators and librarians have suggested that it may be possible or desirable to have a solely, or predominantly electronic academic library. This study tests that assumption by randomly selecting a sample of titles from a mid-size Australian academic library and searching for suitable electronic copies. The conclusion of the paper is that a maximum of 33% of titles held by the case study library are available as e-books, and on a practical basis about 26% of titles held by the case study library could be readily obtained as e-books. The needs and preferences of public library services for individuals, who have another mother tongue than the majority population, in this case Swedish, have become more and more evident. In order to reflect on prevailing practices, the Gothenburg City Library initiated a study using 14 focus group discussions (Brunnström, 2006). The analysis of the opinions of 154 participating individuals with varied non-Swedish backgrounds, combined with the analysis of borrowing figures, has made it possible to continue to develop services in the multicultural, multilingual society that Gothenburg is today with 21 percent of the population born outside Sweden (2009 data). The Swedish study ‘More for useful purposes than pleasure’ shows that the most important factors behind the demand for reading materials are: 1) why a person has moved to Sweden; 2) for how long she/he has lived in Sweden; and, 3) what future plans the individual has. These factors result in different needs of fiction, non-fiction and digital access. Individuals new in the country are eager to learn the Swedish language and more about the society. They also demand books on how to manage their day-to-day lives, both in Swedish and their mother tongue. Individuals who have been in Sweden for many years search for reading material with which they can maintain their contact with their original culture and language. In this paper we share what we have learned about this complex matter; how we can best plan our media purchases and stock our libraries in order to meet the needs of our increasingly diversified societies. India is the second most populous country in the world. It has 29 states and 7 union territories. The state of West Bengal with nineteen districts has a well-established public library system. The present study covers the district of Murshidabad which has 160 public libraries, in total. Significantly, three categories of public libraries namely rural library, town/sub-division library and district library exists in whole district. Covering 21 public libraries with representation of all categories of libraries, the present work aims to study the collection development of material. Data for the present study has been collected through well-structured questionnaire. Study also highlights the various aspects which contributed in building collection in studied libraries. Precisely, these are donation from Member of Legislative Assembly, donation from Raja Rammohan Roy Library Foundation, complimentary copies from the authors, etc. Findings suggest that no-uniform growth has been witnessed in surveyed libraries. Purpose - The present study aims to analyse the collection development/ access management of e-resources among the three Central Universities in Delhi. The study also analyses the allocation of budget to accessing as well as selection criteria for print and electronic resources. Design/Methodology/Approach - The study is based on the research being done for the PhD work and required data is collected through the questionnaire, interview and observation among the three central universities viz. Jamia Millia Islamia, Jawaharlal Nehru University and University of Delhi in Delhi. Findings - The electronic documents are the dominant forms of present-day library procurement in India, with the print struggling to retain its readership. The study revealed the prospects and problems faced by the Libraries in view of access management of e-resources. It was found that inadequate funds and negotiation with publishers are the two most important problems libraries are facing while accessing the electronic resources. Purpose: University libraries playing pivotal role in developing and delivering education among university community by providing authentic information resources in terms of books, magazines, academic research journals etc. Collection development policies adopted to select and purchase the library print and electronic resources which worked as a guide for decision making. The purpose of this study is to propose the collection development policy which will help the acquisition librarians in selecting, evaluating and purchasing the materials for academic/universities libraries. Methodology: The trends of collection development practices were identified through the intensive literature review. Then, the university libraries of Lahore were personally visited to understand their collection development policies and practices. Moreover, the acquisition librarians from outside of Lahore were contacted via phone call to understand and discuss the collection development process in their libraries. Findings: The study findings revealed that there is no systematic written policy for assessment, selection, evaluation and deselection of library material at the universities libraries of Pakistan. Even, the acquisition process of books in universities libraries vary from university to university and even province to province. However, the proposed collection development policy revealed that the automatic receiving of books and other library materials via gifts, donations, exchanging library materials, resource sharing, and subscribing memberships of other organizations will be helpful to enhance the library collection and also reduce the cost to purchase the library materials. The proposed steps for collection development will act as a segment of complete collection development policy and may work as a guide line of collection development procedure to the universities libraries. Originality/Value: The study is first attempt to draw holistic approach of collection development at national level and it will also provide guideline to select user centered resources and also beneficial in terms of saving finances by practicing the proposed steps for developing academic libraries collection. Collection development is a most important process of a library. This process increases the reading materials of the library for the satisfaction of the reader approach. Collection development policy acts as a guide for selecting library materials. It helps to maintain library cooperation and communication between library staff. This process increases the reading materials of the library for the satisfaction of the reader approach. Collection development policies are written statements of goals and evaluative parameters to guide decision-making when adding material to a library collection. A large number of e-resources collection has become a challenge to libraries as a lot of information is now available to the public without having to visit and use the traditional library. American Library Association states that the collection development policies document which defines the scope of a library's existing collections, plan for the continuing development of resources, identify collection strength and outline the relationship between selection philosophy and institutions goals, general selection criteria, and intellectual freedom. In electronic environment collection development policy select tools and processes, set the principles for the management of electronic resources, allocating the budget for buying of e-resources. Due to information technology, most of the libraries are involved in the sharing of the e-resources in many ways. The Collection development policy must indeed be clear whether the collection is in print or electronic form and also it should full fill the user's demand. This study examines the extent to which the De La Salle University (DLSU) Libraries collect print resources about Philippine languages (more than 70 dialects) and how successfully the DLSU libraries in acquiring resources about Philippine languages. It also gauges how the DLSU libraries support the curriculum of the College of Liberal Arts in terms of its collection. This study employs a descriptive research method. It uses collection assessment or the systematic evaluation of the quality of a library collection to determine the extent to which it meets the library's service goals and objectives and the information needs of its clientele. Data were extracted and culled from the library's information system, and tables and percentages were used to describe Philippine languages' current collection of print resources. The DLSU library has an excellent primary collection of resources about Philippine languages. However, the collection assessment highlights many reference materials can still be acquired from the market and added to the collection. The Filipiniana section was able to establish a decent collection that could cater to the needs of the faculty and students. The library still needs to be aggressive in the acquisition of library materials recommended as required readings in the class syllabi of each course. The result of the study provides a profile of the DLSU libraries' collection of Philippine languages and the extent of its collection building, and how it supports the curriculum. There has been some discussion of late, in academic library circles, surrounding the relative merits of Microlog (Micromedia-ProQuest) versus the Canadian Public Policy Collection (CPPC -- Gibson Library Connections). Microlog is a long-standing resource, with over 200,000 titles, that provides fiche copies of Canadian government documents (federal, provincial, and municipal) to subscribers. Microlog also creates the MARC records and makes them available for uploading into library catalogues. CPPC is an online collection of over 22,000 think tank and policy institute reports, along with a selection of federal and provincial government documents. This paper provides a comparative analysis of Microlog and CPPC to help clarify their roles in academic library collections. This analysis considers measures of growth, coverage, and content, as well as additional features associated with each of these collections. This paper reports on the findings of a case study carried out for a doctoral thesis conducted through the University of South Africa. The collection development practices and policies at universities of technology in Auckland, New Zealand and in South Africa were compared. Both countries have recently transformed their higher education systems and upgraded polytechnics/technikons into universities of technology. It was found that whilst the Auckland University of Technology Library demonstrates a planned strategy to meet the needs of their researchers through expanding their collection of traditional and electronic media, the South African institution demonstrates little progress. The latter institution has extended mainly its collection of electronic media and has paid little attention to upgrading its collection of print resources. The researcher concludes that unless considerable funding is allocated to South African university of technology libraries, these libraries will be unable to support the information needs of their academics and researchers, and ultimately these institutions will be unable to rise to their anticipated status as universities.
