This literature review presents a comprehensive review of life Cycle Assessmernt (LCA), as an emerging tool in the field of cultural heritage research and demonstrate how this tool could be useful to support the development of green heritage science into an environmentally responsible field of scientific endeavour. LCA is a standardised, structured, comprehensive, international environmental assessment tool and a rapidly evolving field of research that leverages and harmonises efforts across many sectors to inform environmentally-friendly solutions and choices. LCA has been growing in importance as an evidence-based tool in the field of heritage science, being used as a decision-support tool at micro level (typically for questions related to specific products/processes) and macro levels (e.g. strategies, scenarios, and policy options). This review explores applications of LCA (and the complementary Life Cycle Cost Assessment (LCC), and Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA)) to a wide array of conservation and preservation actions. The paper also examines challenges associated with the application of these life cycle-based methods in heritage science, in order to put forward a set of recommendations to guide the domain of heritage science towards greener and more sustainable practices and impacts. Based on a review of the principles of green chemistry, green analytical chemistry, green engineering, and nature conservation, the paper also attempts to formulate nine principles of green heritage science, taking into account the complexity of research challenges and the environmental and socio-economic sustainability. Low energy consumption and green transformation of automobile product portfolio is the trend of the times. Automotive manufacturers make product portfolio decisions by setting multiple criteria such as fuel consumption, sales, and volume. It is also important to take into account the symbiotic interaction effects between automotive products. In order to achieve the above research objectives, this paper constructs the Lotka–Volterra MCGP model to make multicriteria decisions on automobile product portfolio design from the perspective of energy sustainability with BMW Brilliance is taken as an example to illustrate the process of using the multicriteria model. The empirical analysis successively measures product growth using the logistic model, analyzes the symbiotic relationship of product portfolios using the Lotka–Volterra model, and finally performs multicriteria evaluation using the MCGP model. In order to verify the reliability of the model, this paper verifies the robustness of the model from the perspectives of parameter dynamics, system boundaries, and model scalability. The results of empirical analysis and robustness analysis show that the Lotka–Volterra MCGP model proposed in this paper is applicable to the multicriteria decision-making of automobile product portfolio design from the perspective of energy sustainability. Purchasing food in a way that minimizes negative effects on the environment, society, and the economy is a growing trend in the food industry. Sustainable procurement is discussed in this study, along with its significance, important criteria, and advantages in the food business. Businesses may aid sustainable development, lessen their impact on the environment, provide aid to local communities, and keep up with shifting consumer expectations for sustainably and ethically produced food when they prioritize responsible sourcing practices. To effectively implement sustainable procurement in the food sector, this article stresses the need for teamwork, openness, and a long-term commitment to sustainability. So, this paper ranks the best supplier in sustainable procurement in the food business to achieve sustainability. The concept of multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) is used in this paper to deal with the various criteria. This paper used the TOPSIS method as an MCDM tool to compute the weights of criteria and rank the suppliers. The TOPSIS method is integrated with the single-valued neutrosophic set to deal with uncertain and vague information. There are seven criteria and 10 suppliers in the food business are evaluated and ranked in this study. We obtained the environmental impacts as the best criteria in seven criteria. This paper proposes the method pELECTRE Tri, a novel probabilistic Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) method using the traditional ELECTRE Tri, probability distribution, and Monte Carlo simulation to support informed decision-making in complex and uncertain decision environments. The proposed method is illustrated through a case study involving the renovation of three social housing buildings. The paper provides new insights into the application of probabilistic sorting MCDM in the context of energy efficiency in buildings and highlights the benefits of using probabilities rather than crisp values to categorize alternatives enabling stakeholders to make better use of available resources, especially when dealing with a large dataset of energy measures with different features. The SHARE Program is an investigation of concepts, opportunities, methods and implications for evidence-based investment and disinvestment in health technologies and clinical practices in a local healthcare setting. The papers in this series are targeted at clinicians, managers, policy makers, health service researchers and implementation scientists working in this context. Organisations need to develop long-term strategies to ensure they incorporate innovation for environmental sustainability (IES) to remain competitive in the market. This can be challenging given the high level of uncertainty regarding the future (e.g., following the COVID pandemic). Supplier selection is an important decision that organisations make and can be designed to support IES. While the literature provides various criteria in the field of IES strategies, it does not identify the criteria which can be utilised to assist organisations in their supplier selection decisions. Moreover, the literature in this field does not consider uncertainty related to the occurrence of possible future events which may influence the importance of these criteria. To address this gap, this paper develops a novel criteria decision framework to assist supplier evaluation in organisations, taking into consideration different events that may occur in the future. The framework that combines three decision-making methods: the stratified multi-criteria decision-making method, best worst method, and technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution. The concept of circular economy has been diffused in recent decades to promote economic growth that does not add to the burden on natural resource extraction. Re -X options (e.g., reuse, repair, refurbish, remanufacture, recycle) have been gradually adopted in the product development process and optimized to reduce or eliminate waste and pollution. Although manufacturing incorporating Re -X options can be more environmentally friendly, it involves more sources of uncertainty than traditional manufacturing since the end-of-use products can be collected from multiple origins with various quantities and qualities, and the market demand for both new and remanufactured products cannot be forecasted perfectly. Thus, there is a need to optimize the Re -X policy to alleviate the negative impacts of the higher uncertainty. One option is using the reliability information of new products to estimate the end-of-use conditions and applying multi-stage stochastic optimization to capture multiple demand scenarios. This paper develops a two-stage stochastic optimization model to optimize the quality thresholds for reuse, recycling, and remanufacturing options. Our objective is to minimize the total cost, energy consumption, and environmental impact of producing and providing warranty service for a product family. The model employs reliability information of product components to estimate the warranty service cost and the end-of-use conditions of the returned resources. A case study on a general product family is implemented to illustrate the efficacy of the optimization model. Smallholder farming systems are important for global food security, but these faces multiple environmental challenges hindering sustainable development. Although sustainable smallholder agriculture issues have been widely discussed and addressed by scientists globally, harmonized approaches in evaluating sustainability are still lacking. This paper proposes a five-step process for constructing a sustainability assessment method for smallholder farming systems, namely definition of system boundary & functional unit, indicator selection, indicator weighting, indicator conversion, and indicator aggregation. The paper summarizes the state-of-art progresses in agricultural sustainability assessment at different stages, and systematically discussed the benefits and limitations of weighting and aggregation methods. Overall, this evaluation process should be useful by providing rational and comprehensive results for quantifying the sustainability of smallholder farming systems, and will contribute to practice by providing decision-makers with directions for improving sustainable strategies. Global corporate giants are keen to adopt Industry 4.0 (I4.0) owing to its continuous, impactful, and evident benefits. However, implementing I4.0 remains a significant challenge for many organizations, mainly due to the absence of a systematic and comprehensive framework. The risk assessment study is key to the flawless execution of any project is a proven fact. This paper aims to develop a KPIs-based sustainable integrated model to assess and evaluate risks associated with the I4.0 implementation. This research paper has developed the I4.0 risks evaluation model through fifteen expert interventions and an extensive systematic literature review. This research, based on sixteen KPIs evaluates six risks impacting the organization's decision to adopt I4.0. Initially, the Fuzzy Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory method is used to map the causal relationship among the KPIs. Further, the additive ratio assessment with interval triangular fuzzy numbers method is used to rank the risks. The study revealed that information technology infrastructure and prediction capabilities are the most crucial prominence and receiver KPIs. Simultaneously, technological and social risks are found to be highly significant in the I4.0 implementation decision-making process. The developed model meticulously supports the manufacturer's, policymaker, and researchers' viewpoint toward I4.0 implementation in the present and post COVID-19 pandemic phases in manufacturing companies. The comprehensive yet simple model developed in this study contributes to the larger ambit of new knowledge and extant literature. The integrated model is exceptionally based on the most prominent risks and a wider range of KPIs that are further analyzed by aptly fitting two fuzzy MCDM techniques, which makes the study special as it perfectly takes care of the uncertainties and vagueness in the decision-making process. The pandemic, with its environmental and socio-economic crises, has highlighted the urgency of structural responses. Overcoming this polycrisis requires the reactivation of a community and identity dimension of places. Cultural institutions can play an important role in this process. This paper proposes a focus on the role of ecomuseums in the creation of resilient communities, able to renew themselves to respond to crises. This paper aims to clarify the term CSR. In the aftermath of the events of 2020, the interest in analysing the concept pre- and post-pandemic is crucial. The first mentions of the concept date back to the 19th century. The most important development occurred in the second half of the 20th century. There is no generally accepted definition of CSR. They coincide in the concern for environmental, social and economic areas. And in attending to stakeholders. Synergistically enhancing and realizing the value of grassland ecosystem services (ES) for economic activity is an important but challenging task for achieving sustainability in the karst desertification control (KDC). However, how to use grassland ES value characteristics in the KDC to make decisions on ES improvement, human well-being enhancement, and sustainable development remains unclear. In this paper, we took the contiguous region of karst desertification in Yunnan-Guangxi-Guizhou, China, a global hotspot, as the study area. Based on the valuation of the gross ecosystem product (GEP) and county economic intensity, we analyzed the structural and spatial characteristics of grassland GEP in the KDC using spatial analysis methods. We found that: (1) the grassland GEP in the KDC is mainly distributed in counties with low economic intensity (86.05% of the total number of counties) and vulnerable to losses caused by the livelihood of farmers; (2) the grassland GEP in the KDC is spatially small and scattered (the geographic concentration lies between 0.015 and 0.237), which makes it difficult to form industrial scale advantages; (3) the public product index (66.22–96.77%) and industry scale concentration (97.87–99.86%) of grassland GEP in the KDC are high, and most of the GEP is difficult to transform on the private market. Based on our findings, we proposed three corresponding recommendations for economic decision-making. The energy storage is an important character for sustainable energy structures and the prospective future economy. This paper aims to propose a multi-attribute decision analysis (MADA) approach to prioritize and choose the energy storage system (ESS) alternatives in terms of the different technical, economic, environmental and social aspects of them. In this line, an integrated approach is developed with the combination of intuitionistic fuzzy sets (IFSs), a method using the removal effects of criteria (MEREC), rank sum (RS) and the measurement of the alternatives and ranking based on compromise solution (MARCOS) methods for prioritizing the ESSs. The IF-MEREC-RS was used to find the integrated weight by combining the objective and subjective weights of the different indicators for prioritizing the ESSs. The MARCOS method was implemented to rank the various ESSs over several crucial indicators of sustainability. The practical outcome illustrates that the Li-ion battery (LIB) is the best ESS among all of the options, and this is followed by NaSB and NiMHB. A sensitivity investigation with the diverse weights of the indicators shows the impact of the risk preferences on an alternative prioritization. Background: Girls in Ethiopia's Amhara region experience high rates of child marriage and are less able to negotiate sex or use family planning. Seeking to improve their lives, CARE's TESFA programme delivered reproductive health and financial savings curricula to married girls via reflective dialogues in peer-based solidarity groups. From 2010 to 2013, 5,000 adolescent girls participated via three intervention arms: sexual and reproductive health, economic empowerment, and a combination of both. At end-line, participants reported improvements across health and empowerment outcomes. Four years post-TESFA, 88% of groups reported meeting without continued assistance from CARE. Some original participants had created new groups based on the TESFA model, and some girls not recruited for TESFA spontaneously replicated it to create their own groups. However, questions remained about what had contributed to this organic sustainment and scale-up of groups. Methods: This 2018 study investigated factors affecting sustainability and scale-up of peer solidarity groups through a systematic mapping of TESFA groups across five woredas (districts) and interviews with key stakeholders. Data were collected from 39 focus groups with active and dissolved Girl Groups, Social Analysis and Action groups, and girls' husbands and from 29 in-depth interviews with group facilitators and community health workers across three districts. Data were coded and analyzed per grounded theory principles. Results: Changes in reproductive health knowledge and specific behaviours, such as contraceptive use and institutional delivery, were maintained 5 years after the intervention ended. Group connectedness, spousal support, integration of holistic community platforms, and opportunities for financial independence were found to be important for group sustainability. Observed changes in TESFA girls' confidence to negotiate and assert their rights, hopes of improved mobility, and the promise of economic opportunity commonly inspired spontaneous replication of groups. Recommendations for future peer-based programmes include creating environments of solidarity and holistically engaging intervention communities. Conclusion: By increasing knowledge of and access to reproductive health services, TESFA mitigates some of the harmful effects of child marriage. The maintenance and organic replication of groups suggest that TESFA provides a successful, scalable and sustainable tested model for reproductive health program delivery through peer-based solidarity groups. Plain Language Summary: In Ethiopia, married girls are a particularly vulnerable adolescent population because of the many health risks associated with early marriage. Peer-based approaches are a common strategy to improve sexual and reproductive health knowledge and behaviours for marginalized groups. Critiques of these approaches are that they lack sustainability without ongoing investment and have no lasting impact on health behaviours. CARE's TESFA programme, a peer-based approach with married adolescent girls in South Gondar, was found to be effective in creating long-term behavior change related to uptake of family planning and rates of institutional delivery. Some 88% of groups who received the TESFA curriculum were still meeting 4 years after the programme had concluded. Some participants even created groups of their own, scaling TESFA beyond the original audience, suggesting a potential approach to wider scale-up. To explore lessons learned around scale and sustainability, this study interviewed TESFA participants and stakeholders. Improvements in behaviours related to contraceptive use, institutional delivery, and girls' agency in reproductive decision-making were sustained over time regardless of group status. Factors that affected the sustainability and scale-up of groups included solidarity among group members, support from husbands and community members, ongoing savings and loan structures, flexibility of group processes, and availability of relevant curriculum topics. Through an analysis of these findings, this paper discusses recommendations for sustainable and scalable peer-based programme design via existing Ethiopian community structures. One of the most important and continuously growing research areas in marine ecology is assessing the sustainability of ecosystems. The concept is traditionally approached by quantifying different anthropogenic pressures, such as top-down effects, overexploitation, invasive species, overfishing, and pollution. However, this perspective has been criticized for its inability to capture the complex interactions between natural factors (such as climate change), human factors, and sociopolitical factors that shape ecosystems. In this paper, we present a new structural model for assessing the sustainability of marine ecosystems, PCA-DEA-based model, as an extension to current models that incorporates these key interfaces into dynamic system modeling by including trade-offs on horizontal scales (e.g., decision making). In the frame of this article, the authors maintained that natural resources and environmental conditions are the basis of material production and the life of the population. Systematization of the scientific sources on sustainable development indicated that the state of the environment and the quality level of resource use, protection, and reproduction largely determine the rates of economic growth and production efficiency. The relevance of this scientific problem decision is that at the present stage of economic development, consideration of the ecological and social factors when making decisions on sustainable development is becoming especially significant. One of the factors affecting social behaviors when it comes to sustainable decisions is awareness of the importance of sustainability. The primary purpose of this research is to measure sustainability awareness in Uzbekistan. A survey of 440 Uzbek citizens was conducted to fulfill the research aim. The survey results were analyzed using SmartPLS software. The paper presents the results of an empirical analysis, which showed that environmental awareness is positively and significantly connected with energy conservation. At the same time, the authors found that energy conservation is positively and significantly connected with sustainability issues. In line with the above findings, the obtained results allowed stating that sustainability issues are positively and significantly connected with sustainability awareness. The authors concluded that raising awareness among the population could positively effect the sustainability issues being solved in the region. In today's world, industries are facing massive pressure to integrate sustainability issues for efficient and successful supply chain management (SCM). Hence, worldwide it has become critically important to make economic operational balance satisfying environment protection norms and social welfare perspectives. Consequently, the industries are investigating their SCM structures in association with a third party logistics (3PL) service provider adopting the triple bottom line framework for improving the overall supply chain performance. Therefore, selection of the right 3PL provider for the sustainable alliance is supremely important for broader perspective of greater business value. Thus, the main objective of this research work is the selection of most appropriate 3PL provider for a food manufacturing company (FMC) after systematic evaluation of six different feasible logistic providers serving over a decade in India. Selection of optimal alternative 3PL provider is very complex and challenging because of the qualitative description of service provider performances and the inherent uncertainty due to subjectivity. The concept of interval-valued fuzzy-rough number (IVFRN) offers perfect treatment of such uncertainty. In this paper, we develop a multi criteria decision making (MCDM) model combining the factor relationship (FARE) and multi-attributive border approximation area comparison (MABAC) models based on IVFRN. The proposed model is tested and validated on a case study where the optimal selection of 3PL providers is performed for an Indian FMC. Based on the results obtained in sensitivity analysis, it was shown that the proposed IVFRN based FARE-MABAC model produces stable/consistent solutions. Introduction: Systems modelling and simulation can improve understanding of complex systems to support decision making, better managing system challenges. Advances in technology have facilitated accessibility of modelling by diverse stakeholders, allowing them to engage with and contribute to the development of systems models (participatory modelling). However, despite its increasing applications across a range of disciplines, there is a growing need to improve evaluation efforts to effectively report on the quality, importance, and value of participatory modelling. This paper aims to identify and assess evaluation frameworks, criteria, and/or processes, as well as to synthesize the findings into a comprehensive multi-scale framework for participatory modelling programs. Materials and methods: A scoping review approach was utilized, which involved a systematic literature search via Scopus in consultation with experts to identify and appraise records that described an evaluation framework, criteria, and/or process in the context of participatory modelling. This scoping review is registered with the Open Science Framework. Results: The review identified 11 studies, which varied in evaluation purposes, terminologies, levels of examination, and time points. The review of studies highlighted areas of overlap and opportunities for further development, which prompted the development of a comprehensive multi-scale evaluation framework to assess participatory modelling programs across disciplines and systems modelling methods. The framework consists of four categories (Feasibility, Value, Change/Action, Sustainability) with 30 evaluation criteria, broken down across project-, individual-, group- and system-level impacts. Discussion & conclusion: The presented novel framework brings together a significant knowledge base into a flexible, cross-sectoral evaluation effort that considers the whole participatory modelling process. Developed through the rigorous synthesis of multidisciplinary expertise from existing studies, the application of the framework can provide the opportunity to understand practical future implications such as which aspects are particularly important for policy decisions, community learning, and the ongoing improvement of participatory modelling methods. Sustainable construction has become a growing trend among researchers and stakeholders. Simultaneously, resilience and risk assessments for civil Infrastructures have flourished in terms of importance among researchers, economic sectors, and society. Nevertheless, there is no abundant research that correspond to both approaches, despite that, there are massive similarities and shared characteristics between both investigation branches. Distinctively, this year has demonstrated that sustainable development is directly obstructed by different extreme events that trigger risks and vulnerabilities in civil Infrastructures. These extreme events require a deep and complex study to minimize the impacts they may cause in society and economy, two main factors considered in the study of sustainability. Therefore, when a risk and resilience assessments are conducted, it is already analyzed as a sizable part of sustainability. Consequently, there exists a possibility to create a methodology that examines and assesses four categories of civil infrastructure sustainability: Technical, environmental, social, and economical. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the need of a comprehensive approach between sustainability, risk, and resilience assessment, compiling and comparing the existing methodologies for assessing the impacts on civil infrastructures, showing that both present resemblances and none can be omitted, being necessary for the decision-making. Globalization and the rapid growth of technologies are the main challenges facing the manufacturer and its sustainability and survival. Sustainability for any manufacturing plays an important role in competitive advantage which make the manufacturing firm a sustainable competitor. Sustainability in manufacturing is integrated with Industry 4.0 (I4.0) to achieve benefits of economic, environmental, and social. But it has many criteria and factors and contains incomplete and uncertain information. So, we used the neutrosophic sets to overcome this incomplete information and treat with uncertainty environment. The Single-Valued Neutrosophic Set (SVNS) is used to evaluate these criteria, which include three values (Truth, indeterminacy, and falsity). The SVNS is integrated with Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methods. The MCDM concept is used in this paper to deal with many conflicting criteria. A Decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) is utilized for determining the relation between five main criteria and fourteen sub-criteria in this study. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is used to compute the weights of the main and sub-criteria. Our framework is applied to a real case study in Egypt to show the validity of our framework. This paper develops connections between design thinking and social practice theories, presenting a toolkit intended to support the development of sustainability interventions and policies capable of encouraging sustainable practices. Key developments in design thinking and social practice theories are critically examined, and a toolkit is presented that sensitively combines their conceptual and methodological insights. The toolkit is one of the first resources that enables practitioners to operationalise social practice theories without substantial prior engagement or training. It thereby offers an accessible resource to support the design of initiatives that could disrupt resource intensive practices and support the emergence and normalisation of less resource intensive alternatives. In recent years, sustainable digital economy development goals have received increasing attention because of the serious influence environment with the development of the rapid economy. Meanwhile, Multiple Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) methods are efficient ways to measure sustainable developments, which can controls environmental pollution and protects sustainability improvement. However, assessment results are unconvincing by using the common MCDM methods because various areas that caused pollution conditions are inconsistent. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to design an interpretable MCDM method with uncertain weights for various areas evaluation. In particular, MCDM can be used to evaluate environmental sustainability development efficiently, and deep neural networks can supply credible weights to MCDM. Interpretability is used to understand key factors in the decision-making process. Referring to the national policy and urgent areas from central areas in China, six areas are conducted to assess the sustainable digital economy problem, which could be interpreted as demonstrating the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed approach. Recently, Indian manufacturing industries have undergone a significant transformation emphasising customer-centric objectives to meet the dynamic market's demands. To achieve this, existing industries must upgrade their existing infrastructure to a smart environment driven by automatic data exchange, transparency, and interconnected digital systems. These are the key enabling elements of Industry 4.0. As a result, many Indian industries are developing various sophisticated implementation strategies for adopting it. However, few research works and strategies contribute to its effective and successful implementation. This paper proposes two types of implementation strategies for implementing Industry 4.0 enabling technologies based on the requirements and adaptability of India's commercial vehicle manufacturing industry. The first strategy identifies various aspects of implementing Industry 4.0 enabling framework elements and categorizes it for developing implementation strategies based on India's commercial vehicle manufacturing industry. The significance of each was determined using fuzzy-AHP analysis and ranked accordingly based on the linguistic responses of the industry experts. The most significant framework element is found to be 'Decision Making and Management Skills'. The second strategy emphasizes long-term sustainable implementation objectives. The framework elements are reconstructed and developed into a novel, customized sustainable framework based on six dimensions of sustainability. Using the Fuzzy-DEMATEL method, the causal relationships among these elements are investigated to determine a sustainable implementation strategy. 'Central Database Server' is determined to be the most significant sustainable framework element, while the maximum number of casual relationships is obtained from the group, 'Skill upgradation of the workforce'. This paper proposes a novel research direction for implementing Industry 4.0 technologies into the existing industry. The findings provide several insights and strategies for technological upgradation in other industries in this geographical region. Currently, foundation piles for inhabited areas are often constructed using a continuous flight auger, which is a cost- and time-efficient technology that does not require stabilization of the borehole wall; the steel bar reinforcement is embedded after the concrete has been poured. However, this reinforcement operation can lead to severe construction and structural issues. Thus, several improvements to this technology have been proposed since its first application in the 20th century, such as the use of more fluid concretes. Nevertheless, steel and polymers are emerging as a potential replacement for steel bars in concrete reinforcement for several types of structures and building components, with identified and quantified benefits from a sustainability perspective. Accordingly, this paper proposes and validates a multicriteria decision-making approach designed with multidisciplinary experts within the construction field to assess the sustainability index of concrete pile foundations. The results of a case study enable us to conclude that polymeric fiber-reinforced concrete piles are the most sustainable due to their cost–structural efficiency ratio, high durability, and minimal risks during construction. Steel fiber-reinforced concrete alternatives were also found to be more sustainable than traditional reinforced concrete. Nonetheless, these results are unrepresentative of the current practice as direct costs were found to be the main driver in the decision-making processes, while other costs and both environmental and social indicators are disregarded. This justifies the urgency to provide sustainability-driven decision-making approaches capable of objectively quantifying the satisfaction degree of economic, environmental, and social indicators involved in the analysis. Power Plants (PPs) is considered as critical facilities in each region because of essential role through energy generation processes. These facilities are also depended to water availability especially in water stress areas. Due to the critical water shortage in many areas around the world, it is necessary to make an optimal condition among water consumption and the increasing demand for electricity to prevent any further conflict of interests between industry, householders and the environmental goals. There are different techniques for controlling Water Consumption (WC) in these industries. This paper develops a smart Decision Support System (DSS) for monitoring, prediction and control sections based on Artificial Intelligent (AI) and integration of the PESTEL matrix and Multi Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methods. Monitoring section comprises Fuel Consumption (FC), Atmospheric Temperature (AT), Power Plant Temperature (PPT) and Power Plant Efficiency (PPE), in which FC has the most influence on WC based on ANOVA evaluations in both cold and warm seasons. The prediction results have illustrated that Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System model is more efficient for the WC estimation with a correlation coefficient over 0.99. Ordered Weighted Averaging (OWA) also demonstrated that in the optimistic and pessimistic states, the most priority is linked to E3 (Establishment of evaporation control systems by contractor companies and concluding a guaranteed purchase contract with a power plant worth one and a half times the current amount of water price). In the last step of technical approaches, the smart controlling system is added for execution of water-energy nexus in the PP based on proportional–integral–derivative controller system. Finally, the performance of the DSS is approved with more than 80% agreement of experts and more than 90% precision in prediction procedure through this investigation. Sustainability assessment provides essential information to facilitate informed decision-making, enabling the selecting of the best option among various projects. This research paper considers the decision-making problem in the context of marginalised and isolated communities, introducing a groupal model for evaluating the sustainability of small-scale power supply projects. The proposed model incorporates a comprehensive set of five indicators and 25 criteria. The analysis presented in this study prioritises these indicators and criteria, introducing new criteria based on several stakeholders' participation and offering guidance on measuring the identified criteria. Furthermore, the proposal provides fundamental thresholds for evaluating the projects' sustainability and proposes a model based on aggregated indicators to assess the available alternatives. It encompasses all stages of the decision-making process, employing multiple indicators to evaluate the sustainability of power supply projects. The effectiveness of the proposed model was validated in a real case study conducted in a marginalised community facing isolation challenges in La Guajira, Colombia. The evaluation showcased the model's contribution to decision-making processes regarding power supply projects in isolated communities. The paper demonstrated the application of a multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) using integrated hydro--economic optimization model as the core diagnostic evaluation tool for a regional metropolitan water supply scheme in Kwara state, Nigeria. It presents a holistic investigation into a real--world operational sustainability of metropolitan water supply with the aim of facilitating exploration of insights into sustainability challenges that have burdened service delivery. A total of 20 water management scenarios were considered and four were identified as satisfactory considering a 95% reliability of flows as both realistic and secured for the schemes. They were based on the physical and hydrological capacity of the system, unaccounted--for--water (UFW), revenues, expenditure and institutional/management arrangement. The findings revealed that the scheme not financially viable to sustain service. However, scenario B1 with 95% inflow reliability, a 5% step incremental on revenue and 30% UFW results in the long term sustainability of service delivery. The study would serve as an organized baseline for future work, particularly in obtaining improved estimates for industrial, commercial, and institutional water use categories. Recent investigations demonstrate that mobility problems affects the life quality of the people, business productivity and gross domestic product (GDP) performance. In the face of the changes that we are experiencing, it is important to find alternatives that assistance governments in the decision-making to solve the problem of traffic in large and medium-size cities and bring well-being to the population. The goal is to provide accurate tool to help take the best decisions in situations that most of the time has a lack of economic resources and transparency. Another motivation is to increase the productivity of companies and achieve sustainable development by reducing mobility problems and CO 2 emissions. As outcomes of the paper, an in-depth study is presented on the subject that indicates a gap in the literature with fuzzy logic applied to sustainability. We indicate a sustainable option for the transport sector using algorithms for decision-making, and broaden the discussion on climate change and solutions to reduce the impacts caused by humanity. When the models were applied through a conceptual study, it was possible to provide an instrument generated on the use of algorithms that can aid decision-making by getting qualitative data from a discussion with stakeholders on a topic. What is sustainability? Sustainability is a concept that can be defined in many ways depending upon a society's perception of current material needs and the actual material needs of future generations. Much of our ability to achieve sustainability entails developing indicators and measurements that will guide us to this goal. This paper suggests that we can strengthen the prediction of sustainability indicators by adopting a “multiple equilibria” approach for a more effective decision-making process in various sectors of the economy, in ecosystem protection, or in political arenas. There is an emerging need for further development of predictive mathematical models of system sustainability over economic growth models for sustainable resource measurement and management. The objective of this paper is to use computer modeling and differential equations to simulate the “multiple equilibria” of a 3 variable real world system. In our study, we tested the theoretical validity of “multiple equilibria” sustainability modeling through simulated measurements of precipitation and nitrogen runoff into a hypothetical lake. As a quantitative tool to model, the “multiple equilibria” techniques can have tremendous predictive power for business leaders, political decision makers, and environmental scientists, and assist in better management of ecological, economic, and material resources in short-term and long-term end-use scenarios. This paper explores the existing social life cycle assessment (SLCA) literature (theoretical and case studies) from decision making perspective. In order to tackle this, a critical review of 90 published work, including journal papers, conference proceedings and book chapters was undertaken. The selected articles were analyzed with a focus on methodological framework, boundary scoping, data inventories and practices. The analysis highlighted the inadequacies in the existing frameworks in terms of flexibility, conflicts in choosing and defining Area of Protection (AoP). Lack of consideration of social conditions of stakeholders in no-work and no-use phase, lack of inclusion of positive impacts, less attention to suppliers and consumers and choice of subjective indicators are highlighted as some weak portions within the boundary scoping. Less coverage of contextual and indirect indicators, and absence of documentation of a link between data collected (subjective indicators) and product activities are highlighted as a limitation within inventories, and finally within practices, lack of benchmarks is highlighted. This analysis highlighted an important differentiating factor between the actual definition of sustainability (maintenance of stocks for future generation) and the most common interpretation in literature as a summation of the three (social, environmental and economic) indices. Over the last four decades, Environmental Accounting tools have been developed to conceptualise and quantify the direct and indirect effects of human activity on the environment, to enable decision-makers to track and measure progress towards sustainability outcomes and goals. These environmental accounting methods range from ecological footprinting, carbon footprinting, energy analysis, emergy analysis, ecological pricing and life cycle assessment to environmental input-output analysis. Regrettably, the contemporaneous development of these tools has frequently occurred in isolation from each other, even though they often seek to serve common analytical and evaluative purposes, as well as serving similar communities of interest. It is the central argument of this paper that, in spite of this isolation, the environmental accounting methods have a number of common features − that is, they can be mathematically reduced to similar analytics, and they often confront the same methodological issues − e.g., joint production (co-products) problem, weighting, commensuration, double counting and boundary setting. In this regard the paper reviews how the various environmental accounting tools can ‘learn’ from each other − e.g., how the mathematics of ecological pricing can address the joint production problem in a number of the other environmental accounting methods; and how the insights from input-output analysis can be used in system boundary setting. The paper concludes by agreeing with previous authors, that a better understanding of any given environmental issue is likely to be achieved by using a mix of these environmental accounting tools, rather than relying on just one tool, one perspective or one criterion. Background: This is the tenth in a series of papers reporting a program of Sustainability in Health care by Allocating Resources Effectively (SHARE) in a local healthcare setting. After more than a decade of research, there is little published evidence of active and successful disinvestment. The paucity of frameworks, methods and tools is reported to be a factor in the lack of success. However there are clear and consistent messages in the literature that can be used to inform development of a framework for operationalising disinvestment. This paper, along with the conceptual review of disinvestment in Paper 9 of this series, aims to integrate the findings of the SHARE Program with the existing disinvestment literature to address the lack of information regarding systematic organisation-wide approaches to disinvestment at the local health service level.Discussion: A framework for disinvestment in a local healthcare setting is proposed. Definitions for essential terms and key concepts underpinning the framework have been made explicit to address the lack of consistent terminology. Given the negative connotations of the word 'disinvestment' and the problems inherent in considering disinvestment in isolation, the basis for the proposed framework is 'resource allocation' to address the spectrum of decision-making from investment to disinvestment. The focus is positive: optimising healthcare, improving health outcomes, using resources effectively. The framework is based on three components: a program for decision-making, projects to implement decisions and evaluate outcomes, and research to understand and improve the program and project activities. The program consists of principles for decision-making and settings that provide opportunities to introduce systematic prompts and triggers to initiate disinvestment. The projects follow the steps in the disinvestment process. Potential methods and tools are presented, however the framework does not stipulate project design or conduct; allowing application of any theories, methods or tools at each step. Barriers are discussed and examples illustrating constituent elements are provided.Conclusions: The framework can be employed at network, institutional, departmental, ward or committee level. It is proposed as an organisation-wide application, embedded within existing systems and processes, which can be responsive to needs and priorities at the level of implementation. The procurement of high-quality aggregates is a global problem. In Chile, mining companies are in the process of developing massive underground projects that require the extensive use of Portland cement concrete (PCC), approximately 60%–75% of which is aggregate. Currently, mining projects transport all the required aggregate to the site from stockpiles that can be more than 100 km away, while mining excavations produce millions of cubic meters of waste rock (WR) that are disposed of in landfills. The use of WR in PCC seems to be a sustainable solution for the production of PCC, but decision-makers lack the tools to support a sustainable decision based on CO 2 emissions and operation costs. This paper proposes a methodology that uses stochastic simulation tools to evaluate CO 2 emissions and operation costs to decide when it is sustainable to use WR in PCC for underground mining projects. The main objective of this paper is to provide a methodology to quantify CO 2 emissions and the cost of transporting natural aggregate versus recycling WR for PCC production in tunneling operations. A sensitivity analysis is also presented, which considers scenarios that include natural aggregate transportation distances of 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, and 100 km, and 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% replacement of natural aggregate with recycled WR in PCC. The results indicate that the use of WR leads to reductions in CO 2 emissions only for natural aggregate transportation distances of greater than 70 km owing to the emissions produced when recycling WR. In addition, 100% replacement of natural aggregate with recycled WR leads to a greater reduction in CO 2 emissions than that obtained in scenarios in which a percentage of the required natural aggregate is obtained from WR. In terms of costs, 100% replacement of natural aggregate with recycled WR is the most economical alternative for most scenarios; however, the cost reduction varies with the required transportation distance of natural aggregate. It is concluded that using 100% recycled WR in PCC leads to lower CO 2 emissions and costs as compared to the traditional approach in which the natural aggregate is procured from a site located at a distance of 70 km or more from the construction site, under model assumptions. In recent years, decision makers, policy analysts, and other actors, have become increasingly aware of sustainability, and begun to combine economic, social and environmental criteria in their efforts to maintain competitiveness, long-term growth and development. In multiple stakeholder settings, the presence of diverse objectives and conflicting criteria often leads to a complex multi-criteria decision problem. The multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) offers an integrated framework to model and study sustainability criteria and related inter-criteria relationships. In this paper, we review some of the most significant literature on environmental sustainability, and categorise it to show how and why MCDA models are widely used and becoming increasingly popular. Our systematic analysis suggests that, there has been significant growth in environmental applications of MCDA in diverse areas, ranging from energy management and policy to land use, recycling management and sustainable tourism. Among the various MCDA methods and techniques, analytical hierarchy process, TOPSIS, and goal programming are the most frequently used approaches. Many authors use a combination of different MCDA techniques to balance various factors important to achieve sustainability related goals. Purpose - Life cycle sustainability assessment (LCSA) provides useful and comprehensive information on product system performance. However, it poses several challenges for decision-making process due to (i) multidimensional indicators, (ii) conflicting objectives and (iii) uncertainty associated with the performance assessment. This research proposes an approach able to account uncertain life cycle sustainability performances through multiple criteria decision analysis (MCDA) process to support decision-making.///Design/methodology/approach - Our method is structured in three phases: i) assessing the uncertainty of LCSA performances, ii) propagating LCSA uncertainty into MCDA methods and iii) interpreting the stochastic results. Sustainable design of infrastructures has become a major matter of study since the recent establishment of the Agenda 2030. This paper provides a systematic literature review on the use of multi-criteria decision making techniques used so far for the sustainable design of bridges. Special attention is put as well on how the reviewed studies assess the sustainable performance of bridge designs along their life cycle from the economic, the environmental and the social perspective. Although SAW and AHP are recurrently used in the sustainable assessment of bridges, the analysis of the most recent articles show that the application of TOPSIS and PROMETHEE techniques are gaining increasing relevance for such purpose. The aim of this paper is to capture the changed location decision-making processes and location factors of the automotive industry, resulting from the current challenges brought by electro mobility. From the Taylorist assembly-line production system in the "Fordism" era to the just-in-time focused manufacturing of the Japanese carmakers during "post-Fordism" and at the turn of the millennium with global production and new technologies in the digital age, location analysis has changed massively over time. The same is to be expected for the fourth revolution in the industry. For this reason, the decision-making process of a major German car manufacturer is analysed in a field study conducted over a two-year period. Based on this, a decision process that takes the new framework conditions into account is modelled. The relevant location factors are then examined in a survey of the relevant departments in the BMW Group. Due to the changed production requirements in the course of the electrification, the uncertainty in the technological change and the unstable political trading conditions, the factors: network suitability, risk exposure, optimal sunk cost usage and sustainability play central roles. Before the latest economic crisis, the industry was focused on exploiting opportunities and expanding the production network. This tendency now seems to be transformed by a volatile technological future and by cost pressure. Food waste is a significant contemporary issue in the UK, with substantial environmental, social and economic costs to the nation. Whilst efforts to reduce food waste are laudable, a significant proportion of food and drink manufacturer waste is unavoidable. On the one hand, there is a drive from industry to reclaim as much value from this waste as possible, for example, by conversion to valuable products in what is known as "valorisation". At the same time, growing social and legislative pressures mean that any attempts to valorise food waste must be performed in a sustainable manner. However, for every company and its specific food wastes, there will be multiple valorisation possibilities and few tools exist that allow food and drink manufacturers to identify which is most profitable and sustainable for them. Such a decision would need to not only consider environmental, social and economic performance, but also how ready the technology is and how well it aligns with that company's strategy. In response, this paper develops and presents a hybrid framework that guides a company in modelling the volumes/seasonality of its wastes, identifying potential valorisation options and selecting appropriate indicators for environmental, social and economic performance as well as technological maturity and alignment with company goals. The framework guides users in analyzing economic and environmental performance using Cost-Benefit Analysis and Life Cycle Assessment respectively. The results can then be ranked alongside those for social performance, technological maturity and alignment with company goals using a weighted sum model variant of Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis to facilitate easy visual comparison. This framework is demonstrated in the form of a case study with a major UK fruit consolidator to identify the optimal strategy for managing their citrus waste. Possibilities identified included sale of imperfect but still edible waste via wholesale at a significantly reduced profit and the investment in facilities to extract higher value pectin from the same waste stream using a microwave assisted pectin extraction process. Results suggest that continued sale of waste to wholesale markets is currently the most beneficial in terms of economic viability and environmental performance, but that in the medium to long term, the projected growth in the market for pectin suggests this could become the most viable strategy. • When food waste cannot be avoided, valorisation can increase company resilience. • Valorisation strategies must try to avoid negative supply chain ramifications. • The SWaVI pragmatic framework allows companies to identify their optimal valorisation route. • The SWaVI pragmatic framework facilitates initial selection, not implementation of valorisation. The major objective of this paper is to introduce a novel multi-criteria decision making method (MCDM) called Root Assessment Method (RAM) which is easy to understand, straightforward to use and comparable with other well-known MCDM methods. To do so, we define an aggregating function to rank the alternatives based on a radical expression which its radicand and index are the sums of benefit and cost criteria of each alternative, respectively. Accordingly, RAM allows a different compensation degree between beneficial and non-beneficial criteria which is rare in existing MCDM methods. As the advantages of RAM, the ranking result is not influenced by additional parameter, beneficial and non-beneficial criteria can be simultaneously considered without any transformation and pairwise comparisons are not used. On the other hand, it is observed that RAM can provide the advantage of preventing rank reversal in two case studies, whereas TOPSIS and VIKOR are subject to this problem in the same cases. As another contribution, a new heuristic procedure is suggested to compare the ranking results obtained by RAM with other methods. Ten numerical examples demonstrate that RAM results are consistent with its presumed function and are easily interpretable for a DM who may not be well acquainted with theoretical aspects of MCDM methods. Examples are positioned in the field of sustainability research as the area with wide application of MCDM methods. Background: This is the seventh in a series of papers reporting Sustainability in Health care by Allocating Resources Effectively (SHARE) in a local healthcare setting. The SHARE Program was a systematic, integrated, evidence-based program for resource allocation within a large Australian health service. It aimed to facilitate proactive use of evidence from research and local data; evidence-based decision-making for resource allocation including disinvestment; and development, implementation and evaluation of disinvestment projects. From the literature and responses of local stakeholders it was clear that provision of expertise and education, training and support of health service staff would be required to achieve these aims. Four support services were proposed. This paper is a detailed case report of the development, implementation and evaluation of a Data Service, Capacity Building Service and Project Support Service. An Evidence Service is reported separately.Methods: Literature reviews, surveys, interviews, consultation and workshops were used to capture and process the relevant information. Existing theoretical frameworks were adapted for evaluation and explication of processes and outcomes.Results: Surveys and interviews identified current practice in use of evidence in decision-making, implementation and evaluation; staff needs for evidence-based practice; nature, type and availability of local health service data; and preferred formats for education and training. The Capacity Building and Project Support Services were successful in achieving short term objectives; but long term outcomes were not evaluated due to reduced funding. The Data Service was not implemented at all. Factors influencing the processes and outcomes are discussed.Conclusion: Health service staff need access to education, training, expertise and support to enable evidence-based decision-making and to implement and evaluate the changes arising from those decisions. Three support services were proposed based on research evidence and local findings. Local factors, some unanticipated and some unavoidable, were the main barriers to successful implementation. Background: This is the fifth in a series of papers reporting Sustainability in Health care by Allocating Resources Effectively (SHARE) in a local healthcare setting. This paper synthesises the findings from Phase One of the SHARE Program and presents a model to be implemented and evaluated in Phase Two. Monash Health, a large healthcare network in Melbourne Australia, sought to establish an organisation-wide systematic evidence-based program for disinvestment. In the absence of guidance from the literature, the Centre for Clinical Effectiveness, an in-house 'Evidence Based Practice Support Unit', was asked to explore concepts and practices related to disinvestment, consider the implications for a local health service and identify potential settings and methods for decision-making.Methods: Mixed methods were used to capture the relevant information. These included literature reviews; online questionnaire, interviews and structured workshops with a range of stakeholders; and consultation with experts in disinvestment, health economics and health program evaluation. Using the principles of evidence-based change, the project team worked with health service staff, consumers and external experts to synthesise the findings from published literature and local research and develop proposals, frameworks and plans.Results: Multiple influencing factors were extracted from these findings. The implications were both positive and negative and addressed aspects of the internal and external environments, human factors, empirical decision-making, and practical applications. These factors were considered in establishment of the new program; decisions reached through consultation with stakeholders were used to define four program components, their aims and objectives, relationships between components, principles that underpin the program, implementation and evaluation plans, and preconditions for success and sustainability. The components were Systems and processes, Disinvestment projects, Support services, and Program evaluation and research. A model for a systematic approach to evidence-based resource allocation in a local health service was developed.Conclusion: A robust evidence-based investigation of the research literature and local knowledge with a range of stakeholders resulted in rich information with strong consistent messages. At the completion of Phase One, synthesis of the findings enabled development of frameworks and plans and all preconditions for exploration of the four main aims in Phase Two were met. Resilience and sustainability are both key criteria in risk-informed decision analysis of structural systems. However, a comprehensive framework which incorporates both in a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) process is yet to be developed particularly for more recent structural systems such as diagrids. This paper introduces a coupled resilience- and sustainability-based decision-making framework for seismic design and rehabilitation of building structures. FEMA method for intensity-based and time-based loss, downtime, and casualty estimation are used to evaluate seismic asset, time, and life losses. Economic input-output life-cycle assessment method is adapted to evaluate the environmental loss due to earthquakes, as well. Aiming to study the trade-off between various economic, social, and environmental impacts of earthquakes, an MCDM framework is proposed based on analytic hierarchy process, multi-attribute utility theory, and technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS). The framework is used to study the resiliency and sustainability of archetype steel diagrid buildings in a high seismic region. Six scenarios with different objectives including minimum asset, time, life, or environmental loss and maximum resilience are studied. A survey is conducted to find the weight factors for each criterion for each scenario. Results show that in an MCDM framework, the benefits of sustainable design techniques can outweigh possible shortcomings due to structural configuration and performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The growing role of sustainability in the construction industry must be considered in the entire lifecycle of a building. This way BIM (Building Information Modeling) figures as an important factor in the management of this lifecycle, from design and construction, through the operation and maintenance until the demolition. An efficient interoperability along the lifecycle supported by BIM allows an overall better management and help users to improve sustainability of projects. This interoperability must consider not only data, but also should be concerned with broader aspects, such as processes and guidelines, avoiding information loss, facilitating analysis, and therefore, improving sustainability. In the light of this scenario, a systematic literature review was performed considering sustainability factors, interoperability concerns and lifecycle stages. This review was based on existing methods complemented by a multicriteria decision analysis method to aid the selection of relevant papers. Also, a qualitative data analysis was performed to identify the relations of the fields studied. Results showed that even though some fields receive much attention in the literature, few studies are performed considering interoperability in the entire lifecycle of sustainable buildings. Also, results showed the relevant connections among lifecycle stages and sustainability fields, providing an influence matrix of these two areas. Abstract Bangladesh has developed a power generation expansion plan up to 2041. However, the plan did not fully consider the importance of sustainable development. This paper addresses this limitation and assesses both historical and future sustainability trends of Bangladesh's power generation system, as well as the sustainability of the Power System Master Plan (PSMP-2016) through multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) with respect to social, environmental, and economic dimensions of the sustainability framework. Out of a total of 19 sustainability indicators, there were 10 social, 4 environmental, and 5 economic indicators taken into account. It was found that Bangladesh's future power generation sector's sustainability is going to deteriorate from its present situation. Results of the analysis show that the sustainability index of 0.3769 in 2016 is going to degrade to 0.3249 in 2041. Most importantly, economic indicators dominate the sustainability measures, compared with social and environmental indicators. Thus, improvements in the economic indicators will result in a substantial increase in the sustainability index of the country's power generation sector. This indicates that energy policies need to be designed in such a way that a balance is achieved between all three dimensions to ensure a sustainable future electricity generation system. A similar analysis can also be applied to other countries where future power generation expansion planning is underway. Abstract Despite progress in many areas, the concrete industry still confronts challenges when it comes to the topic of concrete sustainability. Several evaluation methods have been proposed in response to these challenges, but the lack of a holistic framework for sustainable concrete material remains. In this paper, a holistic indicator framework for concrete material sustainability evaluation is developed by aggregating and analyzing the multitude of sustainable concrete material indicators into a causal network that reveals the indicators' interrelationships. A novel component of this framework is the integration of the two global perspectives on sustainable development: the pillars of sustainability (environment, economy, society) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These sustainability perspectives provide the framework with clear context to underpin the concept of sustainable concrete. A demonstration study validated the framework's applicability in evaluating the sustainability of various concrete mixes. The results highlight the importance of integrating both sustainability perspectives in elucidating the trade-offs that exist between the facets of sustainability and the priority areas needing attention to enhance concrete sustainability. These are critical information in the need to balance the different facets of sustainability, and therefore support the decision-making strategies for concrete sustainability. "Sustainability" term has not only become increasingly important globally for individual companies, but also become important for whole supply chains. The selection of supplier is a significant decision for the sustainability of supply chains. Literature review revealed that supplier selection is made traditionally based on economic attributes which are insufficient for sustainability of supply chains as sustainability requires taking economic, environmental, and social issues into account. For this purpose, this paper proposes determining the green supplier selection attributes and then developing a methodology for assessment and ranking of green suppliers based on determined attributes. The first contribution of this study is to propose a novel method, which is FROV (fuzzy extension of range of value) to literature. The latter is to utilize fuzzy extension of preference selection index (FPSI) to identify the weights of attributes. Abstract Solutions that effectively promote sustainable development in urban environments require an understanding of the complexity of human-environment interactions. This paper adopted a systems-based framework to understanding how social, organisational, and environmental factors interact within an urban system in China. Drawing upon a case study from the industrial city of Jinchang, it applied a qualitative bottom-up approach to understand these key factors operating from three perspectives: the commitment of stakeholders, institutional development and personal development of social systems. It revealed that decision-making mechanisms play a key role in improving the sustainability of governance, and that public-private cooperation and public participation are critical for innovative knowledge-based strategies. The key for improving institutional development is to reform the evaluation system of governance thus enhancing the capacities of decision and policy makers, and consequently improve the process of decision-making. Cultural and personal development are important soft power components that influence individual pro-environmental behaviour and performance toward sustainability. The results demonstrated how, in a Chinese context, the urban social system can be understood and urban sustainability can be promoted through environmental adaptation supported by joint efforts from governments, businesses, society and individuals. In this, China does not differ from other nations in spite of significant differences in cultural and political systems. This study contributed to a better understanding of complex urban systems, providing a bottom-up approach and knowledge for enhancing the adaptive capacity toward urban sustainability.
