• Over many decades, red foxes increase nutrient concentrations and affect vegetation diversity on their dens in the boreal woodlands, a nutrient-poor environment. • Denning activity also affects the growth and reproduction of white spruce, a mast-seeding conifer. • White spruce on fox dens are taller and produce more cones in non-mast years than trees off dens. • The effects of denning are subject to the mast-seeding cycle, as cone production in mast years was not elevated on dens. Predators may act as ecosystem engineers by modifying their physical environment through non-trophic interactions. Red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) are ecosystem engineers in the boreal woodlands, a nutrient-poor environment, where their denning activity increases soil nutrient concentrations, affecting the diversity of vegetation around dens. Since dens can persist for many decades and tree growth is enhanced on dens, dens can be used to study the long term impacts of nutrient additions on community and ecosystem processes. We examined the reproductive output of a mast-seeding conifer, white spruce (Picea glauca), on 10 red fox dens and paired control sites at the boreal treeline near Churchill, Manitoba, in July 2019. We estimated cone production in both the current non-mast year (2019) and the previous mast year. The number of cones produced per tree and per hectare was significantly higher on dens than control sites in the non-mast year, but did not differ in the mast year. Higher cone production on dens was partly driven by trees being larger on dens. These results suggest that red fox ecosystem engineering activity affects white spruce reproduction, since increased soil nutrients on dens allow for higher cone production, but the effect of red fox denning is limited by interactions with mast-seeding mechanisms. For example, weather cues may override the effects of denning in mast years, while trees on dens may be able to allocate more resources to reproduction in non-mast years, but store the same amount of resources as trees off dens to produce similarly large cone crops in mast years. Altered resource availability in this nutrient-limited landscape could have additional ecological implications, by affecting the foraging patterns of seed predators and spruce range expansion. The spruce budworm, Choristoneura fumiferana, is presumed to be panmictic across vast regions of North America. We examined the extent of panmixia by genotyping 3,650 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) loci in 1975 individuals from 128 collections across the continent. We found three spatially structured subpopulations: Western (Alaska, Yukon), Central (southeastern Yukon to the Manitoba–Ontario border), and Eastern (Manitoba–Ontario border to the Atlantic). Additionally, the most diagnostic genetic differentiation between the Central and Eastern subpopulations was chromosomally restricted to a single block of SNPs that may constitute an island of differentiation within the species. Geographic differentiation in the spruce budworm parallels that of its principal larval host, white spruce (Picea glauca), providing evidence that spruce budworm and spruce trees survived in the Beringian refugium through the Last Glacial Maximum and that at least two isolated spruce budworm populations diverged with spruce/fir south of the ice sheets. Gene flow in the spruce budworm may also be affected by mountains in western North America, habitat isolation in West Virginia, regional adaptations, factors related to dispersal, and proximity of other species in the spruce budworm species complex. The central and eastern geographic regions contain individuals that assign to Eastern and Central subpopulations, respectively, indicating that these barriers are not complete. Our discovery of previously undetected geographic and genomic structure in the spruce budworm suggests that further population modelling of this ecologically important insect should consider regional differentiation, potentially co‐adapted blocks of genes, and gene flow between subpopulations. Mineral soils exposed by fire are often covered by a layer of ash due to complete consumption of the forest floor (litter and duff). To assess the possible effects of ash on seed germination and viability of jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.), black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) Britton, Sterns, Poggenb.), white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss), and balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.), a laboratory experiment was conducted using ash derived from three types of forest floor samples. The samples represented areas of high conifer concentration, high aspen concentration, and mixed aspen and conifer and were collected from five mature aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) – conifer mixedwood stands in southeastern Manitoba. Ash derived from each forest floor type neither prohibited nor delayed conifer germination, except that of balsam fir. Balsam fir had significantly less germination on ash derived from forest floor samples with high aspen concentration. When corrected for seed viability, balsam fir had significantly less germination on all three ash types compared with jack pine, black spruce, and white spruce. However, the impact of ash on balsam fir is unlikely to have meaningful ecological implications, as balsam fir is a climax species and will establish in undisturbed mature forests. Une expérience en laboratoire a été réalisée en utilisant de la cendre provenant de trois types d’échantillons de couverture morte, représentatifs de zones avec une concentration élevée de conifères (HC), de peupliers (LC) et d’un mélange de peupliers et de conifères (MC) prélevés dans cinq peuplements mixtes matures de peuplier faux-tremble (Populus tremuloides Michx.) dans le sud-est du Manitoba. Shelterbelts are rows of trees planted around farmyards and field for protection against soil erosion, promotion of biodiversity and wildlife habitat. Additionally, to carbon sequestration through growth in tree biomass and carbon sinks in agricultural soil. In recent years, removal of shelterbelts has become more common, as crop land is preferred under higher crop prices, resulting in increased GHG emissions and decreases in carbon sinks. It is likely that landowners are making decisions without the knowledge of carbon sequestered by these trees. In this study, the level of carbon sequestration for the six common shelterbelt tree species found in Saskatchewan (hybrid poplar, green ash, Manitoba maple, Scots pine, white spruce, and caragana) was estimated using a carbon - life cycle analysis method. Net amount of carbon sequestered was estimated for five sequestration/emission stages – 1) seedling production, 2) transportation of seedlings to farm, 3) planting, 4) maintenance, and 5) growth of shelterbelts on farm. Since some landowners are removing shelterbelts, a removal stage was also included. During removal of shelterbelts, CO 2 emissions were produced through: (i) physical process of removing the trees and subsequent burning of the wood; and (ii) loss of soil carbon after the removal over a long period of time. The functional unit for the analysis was one linear kilometer of shelterbelt, the normal structure of shelterbelts on agricultural land. All emissions/sequestration levels were measured as carbon dioxide (CO 2) by multiplying the molecular weight of carbon dioxide to that of carbon (44/12). Other than the growth stage of shelterbelts, all other stages contributed net greenhouse gas emissions, which offset by carbon sequestration during tree growth. Hybrid poplar is a rapidly growing tree and sequesters the most carbon of the six species in all soil zones. A one km long hybrid poplar shelterbelt sequestered upwards of 1923 t CO 2 by age 60 years in the Brown soil zone, compared to 2086 t CO 2 over the same period in the Black soil zone. In comparison, in the Brown soil zone, Manitoba maple and white spruce sequestered 756 and 732 t CO 2 , respectively over the same period. If a landowner decides to remove a 60-year-old shelterbelt, 1205 t CO 2 is lost within a short period after removal, whereas 718 t of remaining CO 2 is retained as dead organic matter, which is slowly released over a period. Studies on the diversity of lichens and bryophytes in northern ecosystems have focused on open tundra and boreal forests. Krummholz tree islands have received little attention. This study examined species' diversity of lichens and bryophytes among islands of White Spruce trees in northern Manitoba. Thirty-three species were found in the tree islands with 11 additional species forming the understorey layer. The trees were dominated by epiphytic lichens and the understorey was dominated by pleurocarpous mosses. The most common lichens were widespread species. Rare lichens in the study area included Protopannaria pezizoides and Alectoria nigricans growing in the shaded interior of the tree islands. The age and density of the tree islands may produce habitat conditions different from those in mature White Spruce boreal forests. Comparative studies between White Spruce krummholz and other White Spruce stands are needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: White spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) trees were sampled to investigate the relationship between ring width and δ 13C as well as between these descriptors and climate. Cross-sections from eight white spruce trees growing in the Hudson Bay Lowlands, subartic Manitoba, with an establishment date prior to 1775 were selected from our archive. For each cross-section, two radii were measured to produce ring-width chronologies. For stable-carbon isotope measurements, every fifth ring (2000, 1995, … 1750) was analyzed separately from each tree, whereas approximately equal masses from the eight trees were pooled into composite samples for each of the intermediate years mixing masses from each tree equal to that from the tree with the least amount. Alpha-cellulose was extracted and δ 13C was determined using continuous-flow mass spectrometry. The ring-width residual chronology derived from eight trees was highly correlated to that previously developed for the area. A small but significant correlation was also found between the ring-width and the δ 13C residual chronologies. The climate signal contained in both ring-width and the δ 13C residual chronologies suggests that warm early summers were conducive to larger rings whereas the δ 13C best reflects the overall growing season temperature. Precipitation, relative humidity and/or drought index have little to no association with either chronology. Significant correlations were observed between δ 13C and the historical ice records from the Hudson Bay Co. archive data suggesting that during long (warm) growing season the 13C content of alpha-cellulose increases. Our results indicate that both ring-width and δ 13C provide complementary information. Future work will involve looking at long-term trends in carbon isotope ratios and the potential use of δ 13C for dendroclimatic reconstruction. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

We examined jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.), black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP), and white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) seed germination and seedling recruitment in aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) and conifer mixedwood stands following the 1999 Black River fire in southeastern Manitoba, Canada. Three postfire seedbed types were tested: scorched (surface litter only partially consumed), lightly burned (surface litter consumed with little or no duff consumption), and severely burned (complete consumption of litter and duff exposing mineral soil). Seeds were sown in 1999, 2000, and 2001, and each cohort was monitored for 3 years. In 1999, severely burned seedbeds had poor germination, while scorched seedbeds had the highest germination. The reverse was true in 2001. After the first growing season, continued survival of seedlings was greater on severely burned seedbeds for all three cohorts. However, better survival on severely burned seedbeds was not sufficient to overcome poor germination in 1999 and 2000. When using artificial seeding to promote conifer regeneration, we recommend a delay of one full year after a severe spring fire for jack pine and two full years for black spruce and white spruce on boreal aspen and conifer mixedwood sites. Abstract: The radial growth response to climate of white spruce in open grown conditions was examined at two measurement heights [breast height (1.3m aboveground) versus stump height (0.3m aboveground)] in order to examine the role of sampling height in dendroclimatic analysis. Twenty-four white spruce [Picea glauca (Moench) Voss] islands were sampled within Epinette prairie in the Spruce Woods Provincial Park (SWPP) located in south-western Manitoba. The structure of breast height and stump height residual chronologies were essentially the same after standardization and autoregressive (AR) modeling to stabilize growth variability, and AR modeling to remove temporal autocorrelation and thereby reduce low-frequency variation and enhance high-frequency variation. Correlation and response function analysis indicated that white spruce at the two sampling heights responded similarly to total precipitation, moisture index (precipitation subtract potential evapotranspiration), and minimum, mean, and maximum temperature. Both sampling heights also responded strongly to the cumulative effects of precipitation during the period of August of the previous year (t−1) to July of the current year (t). Regardless of the sampling heights considered, the results indicate that white spruce at its southern distribution limit responded strongly to moisture stress intensified by high temperatures. The results support the recommendation, at least for samples of white spruce at its southern distribution limit, that samples taken at stump height can be safely incorporated into tree-ring chronologies without the risk of diminishing the strength of chronologies in detecting climatic signals. Experimental seeding of balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) and white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) was implemented in three mature trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) stands in southeastern Manitoba to test (i) the effect of vegetation (light) competition and seedbed type (undisturbed forest floor, exposed mineral soil, and rotten logs) on seedling recruitment over the first 2 years and (ii) the effect of broadleaf litter exclusion on seedling mortality during the first winter. The study indicated that, with adequate seed supply, seedbed type was the most important factor limiting seedling recruitment, especially the recruitment of white spruce, in trembling aspen stands. Seedling recruitment on the best and the worst seedbeds differed by 1.8 times for balsam fir but by 19 times for white spruce. Significant differences in soil moisture and temperature were found between seedbed types. Broadleaf litter exclusion also facilitated the recruitment of balsam fir and white spruce, but only on undisturbed forest floor. Vegetation (light) competition, however, did not limit seedling recruitment. On the contrary, the presence of understory vegetation benefited seedling recruitment on rotten logs. Compared with white spruce, balsam fir is better adapted to regenerate in trembling aspen stands. Aim Thirty white spruce [Picea glauca (Moench) Voss] islands were sampled to study the temporal and spatial pattern of white spruce regeneration at its southern limit of distribution. Location The study was conducted within three mixed-grass prairies in the Spruce Woods Provincial Park (SWPP) of south-western Manitoba. Methods White spruce seedlings, saplings and trees were mapped and measured in relation to eight sectors and five zones delimited by four transect lines extending through the centre of each island oriented north to south, west to east, north-west to south-east and north-east to south-west. Results Temporal patterns of regeneration were negatively correlated with July temperature at the time of establishment and up to 30 years after establishment. Height growth of seedlings and saplings were also negatively correlated with July temperature. Seedlings, saplings and trees were concentrated on the north vs. south aspect and within 4–12 m from the island centre. Seedlings grew almost exclusively in association with creeping juniper (Juniperus horizontalis Moench). Main conclusions Results of the study suggest that white spruce recruitment and growth reflect past climatic variation, and microclimatic and microsite conditions promoting soil moisture retention and/or fire risk reduction facilitate white spruce germination and establishment.
