During the Permian-Triassic transition, dramatic environmental changes occurred, including the segmentation of Pangaea and the beginning of the Alpine orogenic cycle with widespread magmatism and tectonic activity. The Permian-Triassic succession deposited in the northern (palaeo-) Gondwana is now exposed in the inner Northern Apennines where it crops out discontinuously in the Middle Tuscan Ridge, a NS-oriented morphotectonic feature mainly formed by blue-schist and green-schist facies metamorphic rocks. In this paper, we describe a previously unreported late Palaeozoic succession exposed in the central part of the Middle Tuscan Ridge: the Montagnola Senese Ridge. This succession provides information concerning the enigmatic late Palaeozoic units exposed in southern Tuscany, and permits the age constraint of continentalization at the Permian-Triassic boundary with associated magmatism. Specifically, by integrating stratigraphic, structural, and petrographic data, we describe a siliciclastic, volcanoclastic-to-carbonate succession which recorded the transition from marine sedimentation to the typical continental, red-beds of the Verrucano tectofacies. Additionally, deformational features, metamorphism and age of the succession are discussed in terms of its tectono-sedimentary evolution and implications for the Palaeozoic-Triassic setting of the central Pangaea sector currently exposed in southern Tuscany. The results allow us to recognize a middle-late Permian pre-Verrucano succession, and to date the transition to continental facies as latest Permian. The microflora permits correlation of the pre-Verrucano succession to the late Palaeozoic units of the inner Northern Apennines, and establishes the diachronous nature of the Verrucano tectofacies exposed in the inner Northern Apennines. The expansion of ice masses across southern Africa during the Late Palaeozoic Ice Age has been known for 150 years, including the distribution of upland areas in controlling the configuration of glaciation. In Namibia, increasing attention has focussed on long and deep palaeovalley networks in the Kaokoland region in the north, but comparatively little work has been attempted in the topographically subdued plains of the south, in the Aranos and Karasburg basins. The desert terrain of the Aranos area exposes diamictites of the Dwyka Group discontinuously over about 300 km, extending further south to the Karasburg area at the Namibian‐South African border along the Orange River. Whilst examined at a stratigraphic level, the nature of the contact between the Dwyka glacial rocks and underlying lithologies has not been systematically investigated. This paper presents the results from fieldwork in austral winter 2019, in which a highly varying basal contact is described that records the processes of growth, flow and expansion of ice masses across this part of Gondwana. At the basin margins, subglacially produced unconformities exhibit classic glacially striated pavements on indurated bedrock. In comparison, the basal subglacial unconformity in the more basinward regions is characterised by soft‐sediment striated surfaces and deformation. In the Aranos Basin, soft‐sediment shear zones originated in the subglacial environment. This type of subglacial unconformity developed over well‐differentiated, unconsolidated, siliciclastic materials. Where ice advanced over more poorly sorted material or cannibalised pre‐existing diamictites, 'boulder‐pavements' recognised as single clast‐thick boulder‐dominated intervals formed. Importantly, these boulder‐pavements are enriched in clasts, which were facetted and striated in‐situ by overriding ice. The Yinggen‐Ejinaqi Basin (YEB) is located in the central‐southern part of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). Tectonically, the basin is situated at the intersection between the eastern and western CAOB, where Late Palaeozoic strata were well exposed. Hence, it offers a great opportunity to study the deep strata of the eastern CAOB. In this paper, based on extensive studies of Upper Palaeozoic field outcrops and reanalysis of associated geochemical and geochronological data in previous research, the local stratigraphic correlation is established, and the tectonic evolution, sedimentary filling, sedimentary characteristics, and petroleum system of the YEB are discussed. It is revealed that: (a) The filling characteristics of the Upper Palaeozoic strata in YEB are closely related to the closure of the Paleo‐Asian Ocean (PAO). YEB underwent subduction‐related compression during the initial extensional phase of the fore‐arc basin from the Viséan to the Serpukhovian (late Early Carboniferous). During the Bashkirian–Sakmarian interval (Late Carboniferous to Early Permian), it was in subduction‐related fore‐arc and postarc rifting phases. During the Artinskian–Capitanian (Early‐Middle Permian) times, it was in an intracontinental rifting‐depression phase. During the Wuchapingian (Late Permian), it was in an intracontinental compressional phase. Tectonostratigraphy, tectonic evolution, and hydrocarbon potential assessments of the study area show that the Zhusileng Hangwula‐Tost Ul tectonic zone (ZHTUTZ) and southwestern part of Querrshan‐Atasbogd tectonic zone (QATZ) are identified as the main prospective areas for the exploration in the YEB. (b) According to the tectonostratigraphic analysis, tectonic evolution and hydrocarbon system of Carboniferous–Permian in the YEB, the YEB has similar attributes to the basin province in western CAOB (e.g., Santanghu and Junggar basins) and eastern CAOB (Erlian, Songliao Basin). To explore commercial oil and gas in the deeper strata (Carboniferous–Permian) of the eastern CAOB basins, further tectonostratigraphic analyses and comprehensive assessment on hydrocarbon potentials are necessitated in the near future. This paper reports in situ U–Pb ages and Hf isotopic data on detrital zircons from Palaeozoic strata in central‐eastern Jilin Province, NE China, with the aim of constraining the timing of final closure of the Paleo‐Asian Ocean and the tectonic evolution of the eastern segment of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). Zircons from Middle to Late Permian Fanjiatun and Yangjiagou formations in central Jilin Province are characterized by four major groups of age populations (2.5–2.3 Ga, 1.9–1.7 Ga, 1.3–1.0 Ga, and Late Palaeozoic ages). The Paleo‐Mesoproterozoic and Cambrian zircons have positive εHf(t) values, suggesting that the source was mainly locally derived from the CAOB, whereas a lesser amount of Archean zircons with positive εHf(t) values, indicating that source from the North China Craton (NCC). The Phanerozoic zircons have both positive and negative εHf(t) values indicates that material from bidirectional provenances in the CAOB and the NCC. However, Late Permian Kaishantun Formation in eastern Jilin Province contain a single group of Phanerozoic zircons with positive εHf(t) values, distinct from known igneous zircons in the NCC, suggesting a local source. These observations, along with the results of previous studies on Middle–Late Permian igneous rocks in Jilin Province, indicate that the eastern segment of the Paleo‐Asian Ocean underwent the initial closure in central Jilin Province during the Middle Permian and the final closure in eastern Jilin Province in the Late Permian–Early Triassic. The detrital zircon geochronological data clearly record two stages of tectonic evolution and the scissor‐like closure model of the Paleo‐Asian Ocean in the eastern segment of the CAOB. The tectonic evolution of the Qinling Orogenic Belt in the Late Paleozoic has long been controversial, especially due to the limitation of the Mianlue Ocean subduction time. Basin formation and sedimentary development in the southern North China Block are closely related to the tectonic evolution of the Qinling Orogenic Belt, which is an effective entry point to study basin–mountain interaction. We present new detrital zircon U–Pb data from the Shihezi Formation in the Luonan area in the southern margin of the North China Block. The results show that the bottom sample has two major peaks at 288 Ma and 448 Ma, with weak peaks at 908, 1912 Ma and 2420 Ma. The top sample has one major peak at 297 Ma, with weak peaks at 1933 Ma and 2522 Ma. Combined with the published paleocurrent data and lithofacies paleogeography, the sediments of the bottom sample were sourced from the North Qinling Belt, Inner Mongolia Palaeo-Uplift and the basement of the North China Block. The top sample originated mainly from the Inner Mongolia Palaeo-Uplift and the basement of the North China Block. Comparing the obtained zircon U-Pb ages with the published relevant data in the North China Block, it is found that the provenance area shifted from the Qinling Orogenic Belt to the Inner Mongolia Paleo-Uplift in the Late Carboniferous–Permian, and the Qinling Orogenic Belt could hardly provide provenance for the southern North China Block in the Middle Permian. The uplift of the Qinling Orogenic Belt in the Late Carboniferous may be the continuation of Caledonian orogeny in the Early Paleozoic, whereas the uplift of the Inner Mongolia Palaeo-Uplift is related to the tectonic evolution of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt during the Late Paleozoic. This tectonic transformation occurred when the Qinling Orogenic Belt no longer supplied sediments to the southern North China Block in the Middle Permian, and the Mianlue Ocean subduction did not occur until at least the Late Permian. Abstract: It is widely accepted that Sibumasu rifted from Gondwana in the Late Palaeozoic. But the rifts themselves have not previously been documented in Southeast Asia. This paper identifies the pre-Middle Permian Kaeng Krachan Group of Upper Peninsular Thailand as the infill of one such rift, which is given the name Phuket Terrane. Indirect evidence suggests the rift-infill is several kilometres thick and glacially-influenced diamictites are conspicuous in the succession. There are significant similarities with the >3km thick pre-Middle Permian rift-infill of the Carnarvon Basin of Western Australia. East of the Khlong Marui Fault belt the succession is thinner and diamictites are a minor component. A tectono-stratigraphic model is proposed involving Gondwana glaciers dropping their load at the (present) western margin of the Phuket Terrane from where it was re-sedimented in the rapidly subsiding marine rift basin. It is suggested that the Khlong Marui Fault formed part of the eastern boundary of the rift system. The Three Pagodas Fault belt similarly juxtaposes different pre-Middle Permian successions. Rifting ceased in the Early Permian and a passive margin formed as the Mesotethys ocean widened, the upper part of the Kaeng Krachan Group and the overlying Ratburi Limestone representing the post-rift sequence. Abstract: This paper presents the results of a detailed study on the occurrence and distribution of alkylnaphthalenes and alkylphenanthrenes in 39 coal and sediment samples from the Late Palaeozoic containing predominantly terrestrial organic matter. Most of the samples represent the Euramerian flora realm and originate from locations beyond the Variscan front in Eastern, Northern and Central Europe, i.e. especially England and the Moscow Basin. The samples are of relatively low maturity (0.32 to 1.80% R r) and consist mainly of mixtures of type III and II kerogen. Quantification of the C0- to C4-naphthalenes and the C0- to C4-phenanthrenes showed that these compound classes were highly abundant in all samples. Aromatic hydrocarbon maturity parameters in general are in good agreement with measured vitrinite reflectance values. 1,2,7-Trimethylnaphthalene, an assumed diagenetic product of oleanane type biomarkers was present in all investigated samples. This observation provides evidence that oleanane type lipids were biosynthesised by organisms predating the evolution of angiosperms or that assumed formation pathways for 1,2,7-trimethylnaphthalene are insecure. 1,2,8-Trimethylphenanthrene was significantly enriched in samples from the Permian and the one sample from the Devonian investigated in this study. The precursor(s) of 1,2,8-trimethylphenanthrene therefore may have been produced by organisms which were least abundant in the Carboniferous depositional environments represented by our samples. The lower Permian continental succession of the Lodève Basin (southern France) contains a rich tetrapod ichnofossil record. In this paper, we re-describe ~20 large footprints from the Autunian (Asselian) Lunas locality using new data and photogrammetric techniques. Analysis of the best-preserved footprints permits the recognition of two trackways of Ichniotherium cottae and we compare this material with all known Carboniferous–Permian occurrences of the ichnogenus. The large size, slow gait, footprint arrangement and depth pattern inferred from the trackways are consistent with a primitive diadectomorph, and suggest a progressive adaptation to more terrestrial locomotion. A synapomorphy-based track-trackmaker correlation indicates Limnoscelis or analogous forms as possible trackmakers. These footprints increase our knowledge of the ichnofaunal diversity of central Pangaea. • Permian Ichniotherium tracks are reported from the Lodève Basin of France. • Among the largest Ichniotherium specimens, and the largest I. cottae knwon. • Tracks were probably produced by large basal diadectomorph reptiliomorphs. • The peculiar tracks depth pattern suggests progressive locomotion adaptation. • Tracks increase knowledge of tetrapod ichnofaunal diversity in central tropical Pangaea. To determine the Late Palaeozoic evolution of the Lhasa terrane, we report the results of field mapping, petrological and fossil investigations, and U–Pb dating of detrital zircon grains (n = 474) from lower-greenschist-facies clastic rocks of the Lagar Formation in the Baruo area, Tibet. Our results indicate that the Lagar Formation was deposited during the Late Carboniferous to Early Permian in a shallow-marine environment on the northern margin of Gondwana. Glacial marine diamictites are common within the Lagar Formation and record glaciation of Gondwana during the Late Palaeozoic. Moreover, the detrital materials of the Lagar formation originated mostly from the collision orogenic belt. The ages of detrital zircon grains from the Lagar Formation make up five main groups with ages of 410–540 Ma, 550–650 Ma, 800–1100 Ma, 1600–1800 Ma, and 2300–2500 Ma, which display three characteristic age peaks at ~1150, 2390 and 2648 Ma. We tentatively suggest that the Lhasa terrane was a shallow-marine basin under the influence of the Gondwanan glaciation during the Late Carboniferous–Early Permian. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present new zircon U–Pb ages, geochemical data on the Late Palaeozoic volcanic rocks of the Suji and Dahongshan formations, which are exposed in the Plate Marginal Orogenic Belt along the northern margin of the North China Craton. Our aim is to constrain the petrogenesis, tectonic setting of volcanic rocks, and to address the late stage tectonic evolution of the Paleo‐Asian Ocean. Lithologically, the Suji and Dahongshan formations present the main rock association with basaltic andesite, andesite, dacite, rhyolite, and tuff. New zircon U–Pb dating results suggest that the volcanic rocks formed during 280–261 Ma and 277–267 Ma, respectively. Geochemically, these volcanic rocks belong to the low‐K tholeiitic to high‐K calc‐alkaline series and are characterized by highly enriched light rare earth elements, K, Rb, Ba; depleted Nb, Ta, Ti; and highly negative Eu anomalies, very similar to that of the continental arc magmatism. These data, together with geological field investigations, suggest that the Early Permian volcanic rocks from Suji and Dahongshan formations were related to southward flat subduction of the Paleo‐Asian Ocean beneath the northern margin of the North China Craton. Therefore, these volcanic rocks were interpreted as Andean‐style continental margin arc magmatism. The upper Palaeozoic succession (Pyeongan Supergroup) in central eastern Korea is well correlated with the equivalent successions distributed in North China, suggestive of the Korean upper Palaeozoic being part of the Sino-Korean Block. Detrital zircon U–Pb ages and Sm–Nd isotope compositions of the Pyeongan Supergroup in the Samcheok coalfield of the Taebaeksan Basin were analysed. A single predominant zircon age peak at c. 1.9 Ga (> 70%) is marked in all sedimentary units, followed by varying amounts of minor late Palaeozoic grains (up to 30%). The rarity of Meso- to Neoproterozoic- and Silurian-aged zircons confirms that sediment influx from the South China and Qinling blocks was insignificant. The 2.0–1.8 Ga-dominated zircon age pattern and the Nd isotope composition (average εNd(0) = −15.5±4.0) of the Pyeongan Supergroup most closely reflect the signature of the Yeongnam Massif basements, which supports a previous hypothesis that the Pyeongan Supergroup was mostly derived from a palaeo-orogen located to the east–southeast. Relatively higher εNd(0) values (> −10.1) in the lowermost and the upper parts of the succession are closely matched by the increased occurrence of syn-depositional-aged zircons, which indicates considerable mixing of juvenile materials at c. 320 Ma and 260 Ma. Both arc-related magmatic events are interpreted to have been related to oceanic subduction, suggesting that the eastern margin of the Sino-Korean Block was an active continental margin during late Palaeozoic times. In situ zircon U–Pb ages and Hf isotopic data, whole‐rock major and trace element contents, and Sr–Nd isotopic compositions are reported for Permian intrusive rocks at Shaolanghe in Eastern Inner Mongolia in order to explore the magmatic origin and tectonic significance of these rocks for the evolution of the northern margin of the North China Craton. Three intrusive rocks, quartz diorite, Xishuiquan granite, and Xinglong granite, yield zircon U–Pb ages of 285.9 ± 3.1, 274.2 ± 2.9, and 260.0 ± 8.4 Ma, respectively. The quartz diorite and Xishuiquan granite belong to the high‐K calc‐alkaline series, enriched in large ion lithophile elements (e.g., Rb) and depleted in high field strength elements (e.g., Nb and Ti). They are defined as I‐type granites. The quartz diorite has initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios of 0.7049–0.7051, εNd(t) values of −10.0 to −11.4, and εHf(t) values of −15.2 to −9.9. The εHf(t) values of the Xishuiquan granite (−4.8 to 4.0) vary in discrete segments, whereas the εNd(t) values (−12.9 to −13.3) are consistent with those of the quartz diorites (−10.0 to −11.4). A magma mixing model is proposed for the formation of the quartz diorites of the Shaolanghe region, and the Xishuiquan granite was likely derived from partial melting of the Paleoproterozoic crust with involvement of mantle components. Geochemical analyses show that the tectonic setting of the northern margin of the North China Craton during the late Palaeozoic was an Andes‐type active continental margin associated with subduction of the Paleo‐Asian Ocean plate. The Late Carboniferous Souss Basin of south-central Morocco exhibits an approximately 1,800 m thick succession of fluvial and lacustrine deposits that have yielded diverse fossil remains of plants, insects, conchostracans, ostracods, jellyfish, fishes, and few tetrapod footprints. Recent exploration of ichnofossils of the Souss Basin led to the discovery of several trampled surfaces including tetrapod footprints assigned to the plexus Batrachichnus (Woodworth, 1900). Limnopus (Marsh, 1894), Dimetropus (Romer and Price, 1940), and Ichniotherium (Pohlig, 1892). These footprints can be referred to temnospondyl, basal synapsid (“pelycosaurian”), and diadectomorph trackmakers. The moderately diverse tetrapod footprint assemblage from the Souss Basin is important because it is the second-oldest record of tetrapod footprints from Africa and only the second record of the well-known ichnogenus Ichniotherium from outside of North America and Europe. Based on the variety of tetrapod tracks and previously collected floral and insect remains, the Souss Basin must have represented a well-established continental ecosystem during the Late Carboniferous. The Daolundaba Cu–polymetallic deposit is a newly discovered Cu–W–Sn deposit on the western slopes of the southern Great Xing’an Range, and its mineralization was related to an early Permian coarse-grained biotite granite. However, there is little information on the age of formation of the deposit. In this article, we present the results of our investigation into the age of the Daolundaba Cu–polymetallic deposit, which involved the selection of chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite samples for Rb–Sr isochron dating. A Rb–Sr isochron defined by the chalcopyrite samples yielded a Rb–Sr isochron age of 290.0 ± 11 Ma (MSWD = 1.2) with an initial Sr isotopic composition (ISr) of 0.71446. The pyrrhotite samples yielded a Rb–Sr isochron age of 283.0 ± 2.6 Ma (MSWD = 1.16) with an initial Sr isotopic composition (ISr) of 0.71447. The Rb–Sr isochron age determined from the chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite is 282.7 ± 1.7 Ma (MSWD = 1.13). These results indicate that the Daolundaba Cu–polymetallic deposit formed during the early Permian (282.7–290.0 Ma). The Rb and Sr contents of the chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite range from ~0.1325 to ~3.6810 ppm and from ~0.1219 to ~9.5740 ppm, respectively, and the initial Sr isotope ratios (ISr) range from 0.71047 to 0.71869, with an average of 0.714723. These isotopic characteristics indicate the ore-forming minerals of the Daolundaba Cu–polymetallic deposit originated mainly from the crust, but with small amounts of mantle material involved. The copper was derived from the associated magma whereas the W and Sn was derived from the surrounding strata. The Permian mineralization of the Xing’an–Mongolia region occurred in an active continental margin setting during subduction of the Palaeo-Asian oceanic plate beneath the Siberian Plate. Background: The systematic positions of the extinct insect orders Hypoperlida, Miomoptera and Permopsocida were enigmatic and unstable for nearly a century. The recent studies based on new material, especially from the Cenomanian Burmese amber, shed light on evolutionary history of Acercaria resolving Permopsocida as the stem group of Condylognatha. However, the knowledge of the remaining two orders differs significantly. Results: In this study, we describe new specimens and evaluate morphology of various structures with emphasis on the mouthparts and wing venation. Our results are primary based on revisions of the type specimens with a proper delimitation of taxa Hypoperlida and Miomoptera followed by their significance for the evolutionary history of Acercaria. Three new genera as Belmomantis gen. nov., Elmomantis gen. nov., and Mazonopsocus gen. nov. are designated as members of Palaeomanteidae. The Pennsylvanian Mazonopsocus provides a minimum age for calibration, in accordance to the presence of crown acercarians during the late Carboniferous. Conclusions: This contribution demonstrates that Hypoperlida and Miomoptera are stem groups of Acercaria. The putative clade (Hypoperlida + Miomoptera) is appearing as potential sister group of (Psocodea + (Permopsocida + (Thripida + Hemiptera))). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A silicified Middle Permian (Wordian) gastropod fauna is reported from the Tak Fa Limestone from Northern Thailand. It is the first diverse Permian gastropod fauna known from Thailand. The fauna comes from shallow water carbonates that are rich in fusulinids, sponges and calcareous algae. Forty gastropod species are reported, among them 17 nominate species and 23 species in open nomenclature. Thus, this fauna represents one of the richest Permian gastropod faunas known from Southeast Asia. Twelve species and one genus are new to science (all new taxa authored by Nützel & Ketwetsuriya). The new genus is Takfaia. The new species are Pharkidonotus khaonoiensis, Khumerspira thailandensis, Baylea? umbilicata, Takfaia kuesi, Glabrocingulum magnum, Knightinella ornata, Anomphalus lateumbilicatus, Yunnania pulchra, Microdoma carinata, Trachydomia takhliensis, Goniasma tricarinata and Cambodgia acuminata. The gastropod fauna is dominated by typical Late Palaeozoic cosmopolitan genera with bellerophontoids and pleurotomariines being most abundant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent finds of tetrapod ichnites in the red-bed and volcaniclastic succession of the Iberian Pyrenean Basin permits an assessment of the faunal diversity and palaeoenvironment of a late early Permian setting. The tetrapod ichnoassemblage is inferred with the aid of photogrammetry and constituted by Batrachichnus salamandroides, Limnopus isp., cf. Amphisauropus (these three ichnotaxa present associated swimming traces, assigned to Characichnos), cf. Ichniotherium, Dromopus isp., cf. Varanopus, Hyloidichnus isp. and Dimetropus leisnerianus. These ichnotaxa suggest the presence of temnospondyls, seymouriamorphs, diadectomorphs, araeoscelids, captorhinids and synapsid pelycosaurs as potential trackmakers. These faunas correlate to the late early Permian. Two ichnoassociations correspond to two different palaeoenvironments that were permanently or occasionally aquatic (meandering fluvial systems and unconfined runoff surfaces, respectively). Ichnotaxa in the fluvial system is more diverse and abundant than in the runoff surfaces system. The Iberian Pyrenean ichnoassemblage reveals the faunistic connection and similarities among nearing basins (Spain, southern France and Morocco) differing from the Central European basins (i.e. German Tambach Formation). Based on the palaeogeography and the climate models of the early Permian, we suggest the correlation of ichnofaunal composition with different palaeoclimate biomes. This results in a diffuse boundary of Gondwana–Laurasia land masses, indicating no geographic barriers but a possible climate control on the faunal distribution. Late Palaeozoic granites are widely distributed in the southeastern Beishan area, which is located in the central part of the southern Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). U–Pb zircon dates of five late Palaeozoic granitic plutons from the southeastern Beishan area yield Permian ages: 285 ± 2 Ma (Shuwojing and Western Shuwojing plutons), 269 ± 3 Ma (Jianquanzi and Jiuquandihongshan plutons), and 260 ± 1 Ma (Jiujing pluton). The early Permian Shuwojing pluton, an unfractionated calc-alkaline biotite monzogranite with slightly positive εNd(t) (+0.7 and +0.6) and low initial87Sr/86Sr (0.70722 and 0.70712), and the early Permian Western Shuwojing pluton, a high-K calc-alkaline biotite granite with slightly negative εNd(t) (−0.2 and −0.1) and low initial87Sr/86Sr (0.70390 and 0.70919), are likely derived from a mixture of depleted (juvenile) mantle and upper continental crustal (or sedimentary) material. The mid-Permian Jianquanzi and Jiuquandihongshan monzogranites have highly fractionated potassium-rich calc-alkaline characteristics with negative εNd(t) (−4.3) and very high initial87Sr/86Sr (0.71949), reflecting a continental crustal component. The compositionally diverse Jiujing pluton and the granodiorite and high-Sr monzogranite phases display adakite-like compositions with relatively low εNd(t) (−0.1 and −2.2) and high initial87Sr/86Sr (0.70822 and 0.70913). The Jiujing low-Sr monzogranite has higher initial87Sr/86Sr (0.73464) and lower εNd(t) (−2.8), indicating a significant continental crustal component in its genesis. This work, combined with the regional geology and previous studies, suggest that the early to middle Permian southern Beishan plutons formed in a post-collisional environment, probably an intracontinental rift environment linked to asthenospheric upwelling in response to the break-off of a subducted slab. In the late Permian, the southern Beishan area was in a compressive tectonic regime and thickening of the continental crust resulted in the formation of the Jiujing adakite-like granite. Detrital zircon U/Pb ages provide new insights into the provenance of Upper Devonian–Permian clastic rocks of Bel’kovsky Island, within the New Siberian Islands archipelago. Based on these new data, we demonstrate that Upper Devonian–Carboniferous turbidites of Bel’kovsky Island were derived from Grenvillian, Sveconorwegian, and Timanian sources similar to those that fed Devonian–Carboniferous deposits of the Severnaya Zemlya archipelago and Wrangel Island and were probably located within Laurentia–Baltica. Detrital zircon ages from the lower Permian deposits of Bel’kovsky Island suggest a drastic change in provenance and show a strong affinity with the Uralian Orogen. Two possible models to interpret this shift in provenance are proposed. The first involves movement of these continental blocks from the continental margin of Laurentia–Baltica towards the Uralian Orogen during the late Carboniferous to Permian, while the second argues for long sediment transport across the Barents shelf. We present here a detailed study of the Upper Carboniferous–Lower Permian stratigraphy of Bol'shevik Island in the Severnaya Zemlya Archipelago, consisting of the analysis of sedimentary structures and lithostratigraphy, U/Pb detrital zircon dating and structural studies. The preserved sedimentary structures suggest that the studied strata were deposited in a relatively small meandering fluvial system. U/Pb dating of detrital zircons reveals that the Upper Carboniferous–Lower Permian sandstones contain a primary age population ranging from 450 to 570 millions of years, with a predominance of Early–Middle Ordovician zircons. This detrital zircon distribution indicates that the studied formations were derived locally from the erosion of Lower Ordovician deposits of Bol'shevik Island or elsewhere in the archipelago. Our structural studies suggest that Upper Carboniferous–Lower Permian deposits are deformed into a series of west–north-west verging open asymmetric folds, suggesting a west–north-west direction of tectonic transport and that deformation across the island is post-Early Permian in age. The Shanderman eclogites and related metamorphosed oceanic rocks mark the site of closure of the Palaeotethys ocean in northern Iran. The protolith of the eclogites was an oceanic tholeiitic basalt with MORB composition. Eclogite occurs within a serpentinite matrix, accompanied by mafic rocks resembling a dismembered ophiolite. The eclogitic mafic rocks record different stages of metamorphism during subduction and exhumation. Minerals formed during the prograde stages are preserved as inclusions in peak metamorphic garnet and omphacite. The rocks experienced blueschist facies metamorphism on their prograde path and were metamorphosed in eclogite facies at the peak of metamorphism. The peak metamorphic mineral paragenesis of the rocks is omphacite, garnet (pyrope-rich), glaucophane, paragonite, zoisite and rutile. Based on textural relations, post-peak stages can be divided into amphibolite and greenschist facies. Pressure and temperature estimates for eclogite facies minerals (peak of metamorphism) indicate 15-20 kbar at ~600 °C. The pre-peak blueschist facies assemblage yields <11 kbar and 400-460 °C. The average pressure and temperature of the post-peak amphibolite stage was 5-6 kbar, ~470 °C. The Shanderman eclogites were formed by subduction of Palaeotethys oceanic crust to a depth of no more than 75 km. The San Ignacio Fm, a late Palaeozoic foreland basin succession that crops out in the Frontal Cordillera (Argentinean Andes), contains lacustrine microbial carbonates and volcanic rocks. Modification by extensive pedogenic processes contributed to the massive aspect of the calcareous beds. Most of the volcanic deposits in the San Ignacio Fm consist of pyroclastic rocks and resedimented volcaniclastic deposits. Less frequent lava flows produced during effusive eruptions led to the generation of tabular layers of fine-grained, greenish or grey andesites, trachytes and dacites. Pyroclastic flow deposits correspond mainly to welded ignimbrites made up of former glassy pyroclasts devitrified to microcrystalline groundmass, scarce crystals of euhedral plagioclase, quartz and K-feldspar, opaque minerals, aggregates of fine-grained phyllosilicates and fiammes defining a bedding-parallel foliation generated by welding or diagenetic compaction. Widespread silicified and silica-permineralized plant remains and carbonate mud clasts are found, usually embedded within the ignimbrites. The carbonate sequences are underlain and overlain by volcanic rocks. The carbonate sequence bottoms are mostly gradational, while their tops are usually sharp. The lower part of the carbonate sequences is made up of mud which appear progressively, filling interstices in the top of the underlying volcanic rocks. They gradually become more abundant until they form the whole of the rock fabric. Carbonate on volcanic sandstones and pyroclastic deposits occur, with the nucleation of micritic carbonate and associated production of pyrite. Cyanobacteria, which formed the locus of mineral precipitation, were related with this nucleation. The growth of some of the algal mounds was halted by the progressive accumulation of volcanic ash particles, but in most cases the upper boundary is sharp and suddenly truncated by pyroclastic flows or volcanic avalanches. These pyroclastic flows partially destroyed the carbonate beds and palaeosols. Microbial carbonate clasts, silicified and silica-permineralized tree trunks, log stumps and other plant remains such as small branches and small roots inside pieces of wood (interpreted as fragments of nurse logs) are commonly found embedded within the ignimbrites. The study of the carbonate and volcanic rocks of the San Ignacio Fm allows the authors to propose a facies model that increases our understanding of lacustrine environments that developed in volcanic settings.
