Migrant Literatures: Concept from an Excentric Literary Field. This article focuses on the concept of migrant literatures as it was developed by literary studies in Quebec at the beginning of the 1980s. It examines the conditions that led to the emergence of the notion, such as the historical evolution, immigration policies and linguistic specificity, and compares it with the situation in France, where such a concept was not considered by literary theory until recently and still meets with a certain resistance to multiculturalism. Hybridity is a key term to define migrant literatures, a term that emerged alongside postmodernism, and contributes to reconsidering the traditional boundaries of national literatures, often based on a uniform vision of history and a territorial perspective of space. On a literary level, the emergence of migrant literatures can be attributed to the tendency, in Quebec literature, towards exile, as it represents itself in an excentric perspective. As such, it fosters a close relationship with alterity and welcomes multiple identities. Quebec literature has also been described as adventureless, mostly representing an idyll sheltered from the outer world. This paper suggests that this also can promote a fertile ground for migrant writers, whether they need a refuge from a difficult experience or can offer the adventure missing from the general trend of works. This paper examines the effects of parents an ethnic language retention by children in five Chinese communities in urban Canada Parents' direct promotion of ethnic language is found to explain 44 percent of the total variance of children's language retention, indicating that the family is an important language retaining agent. Parents' direct promotion is related positively to their ethnic community involvement and negatively to their knowledge of English/French. Surprisingly, parents' ethnic identification and their length of time in Canada have no significant relationships with the above variables, suggesting that, among Canadian-Chinese parents, ethnic identification is not a determinant of ethnic life, and their levels of assimilation have remained rather stable. A literary criticism of the books "The Girl Who Was Saturday Night" by Heather O'Neill and "My October" by Claire Holden Rothman is presented. It examines the anglophone desire for rapprochement in Quebec, sovereigntist ideology and the theme of cultural gaps being bridged by translation. Other topics include the books' focus on Quebec society, historical antagonism between anglophones and francophones, and a shift towards a social diversity paradigm.

The article discusses various topics covered in the issue including, the literary relationship between Québec and other francophone literatures, the development of Québec's foreign and domestic policy and a paper by William J. Berg that explores Canadian identity in the Post-Conquest period.

This article aims to contribute to the history of Canadian official translators by looking at three activist translators who were also published writers in postconfederation nineteenth-century Canada. All three francophone official translators "exiled" to Ottawa, the newly designated capital of the young confederation, were actively engaged in creating francophone spaces in and from which they could promote French-Canadian cultures and the French language. Refusing to submit passively to Anglo-dominated government authorship and to the increasingly anglicized Canadian landscape, they coordinated their efforts to carve out a distinct and distinctive place for Canadian francophones. Their weapon of choice in confronting Anglo-Canadian hegemony was authorship. From historical narrative, to novels, caustic songs and nationalist poetry, their writings nurtured pride in the shared history of French-Canadians from different backgrounds -- despite the traumatic Grand Dérangement and Conquête -- and generated hope for the future of their nation(s). The article offers information on the Association of Canadian and Quebec Literatures/L'Association des littératures canadiennes et québécoise (ACQL/ALCQ) which was founded in 1970s. The article examines visual co-textualization of Spatio-Joual in the Quebecois comics series "Motel Galactic." Topics discussed include the historical background of the Canadian province, the introduction of comics in the early part of 20th century, and the use of Joual or the linguistic features that have become the symbol of national identity in the struggle for independence. Plot summary and the doubleness of the comics in terms of verbal and visual interaction are mentioned.

Recent calls for a greater emphasis on the teaching of Quebec literature from primary school to cégep once more link the teaching of Quebec literature with the survival of a language and a culture. The current debate echoes those which have taken place over the last 100 years, both under the denominational system of education and since the Révolution tranquille. Different pedagogical and ideological factors have influenced not only whether Francophone Canadian literature has been taught, but also what has been taught and how it has been taught. Anxieties about the status, history and definition of “notre littérature” have recurred throughout the century, as have concerns about the relationship between the literature of Quebec and the literature of metropolitan France. This article will discuss the teaching of literature in Quebec since 1900 to conclude with a consideration of the teaching of Francophone Canadian literature in Quebec today. On the basis of private documents (letters, diaries), this article discusses the language use of Canadian French writers from different social classes from the beginning of the 18th century to the end of the 19th century. It first examines the relationship between the writers and the norm and their use of conservative and innovative features with regard to spelling and grammar. This article discusses the prominent treatment of newspapers and current events as a thematic metaphor in the novels "Bonheur d'occasion" and "Alexandre Chenevert," by the Canadian author Gabrielle Roy. The portrayal of Roy's male characters as being more interested and aggressive towards news media rather than their family life is explored in detail.
