Despite the importance of a thriving workforce in sustaining organizational success, prior research pays little attention to how individualized human resource (HR) practices can help individual employees to thrive at work. Drawing on the theoretical underpinnings of conservation of resources theory, we investigate whether, how, and when development idiosyncratic deals (i‐deals) can contribute to individual thriving. We contend that possessing development i‐deals will motivate individuals to engage in approach job crafting, which in turn promotes their experience of thriving at work. We further contend that high‐quality leader–member exchange will enhance the function of development i‐deals in triggering approach job crafting and subsequent thriving experiences. Results from a two‐wave survey involving 278 managers in a pharmaceutical firm in China and a three‐wave survey among 178 managers working in various organizations in the UK support our hypotheses. Asynchronous video interviews (AVIs) are a form of one‐way, technology‐mediated selection interview that can help streamline and increase flexibility in the hiring process and are used to hire millions of applicants per year. Although applicant reactions to AVIs in general tend to be more negative than with traditional interview modalities, AVIs can differ widely in how they are designed. For instance, applicants can be provided with more or less preparation time, response length, rerecording options, or rely on different question formats. This study examines how AVI design features impact applicant reactions, as well as the moderating role played by applicant age and gender. Data from 27,809 real job applicant's AVI experiences were collected in 11 countries (69.3% English‐speaking) from 33 companies and relating to 72 types of positions. Data were fitted with linear mixed‐effects models to account for nesting. Results showed that allowing more preparation time and offering the opportunity to rerecord responses were related to more favorable reactions, while including more questions was related to more negative reactions. Applicants above the age of 31 reacted especially negatively to AVIs with more questions while those below the age of 30 preferred being allocated longer maximum response lengths. Women reacted more positively to increased preparation time. These findings might help both AVI vendors and hiring organizations design AVIs that facilitate a positive applicant experience. Our research also expands knowledge on applicant reactions to interviews, highlights crucial differences from traditional formats, and calls for integrating applicant characteristics into current theoretical frameworks on applicant reactions to AVIs. Employees play a central role in organizational functioning and representation. HR managers thus strive to create an attractive employer image that stimulates employees' attachment and ambassadorship. However, presently, there is limited research about how employees perceive and react toward their organization's employer brand. More importantly, the studies available have focused on content attributes only (i.e., instrumental and symbolic image dimensions). This has resulted in limited (content‐based) understanding of the construct and failure to incorporate its branding‐related aspects (process attributes) which represent the crux of employer branding theory. Thus, using the HRM system strength theory and employer branding literature, this article examines three process characteristics (i.e., employer brand distinctiveness, consistency, and consensus) vis‐à‐vis instrumental and symbolic content attributes to understand employee reactions (i.e., employer attractiveness, organizational identification, and employee ambassadorship). Data were collected at two times through Prolific Academic with 254 UK and US employees. Results suggest that employer brand process attributes are valuable sources to enhance employees' identification with their organization. Moreover, distinctiveness and consistency seem especially instrumental in enhancing employees' attractiveness perceptions and display of positive ambassadorship. The associations of certain factors, such as age and menopausal hormone therapy, with breast cancer risk are known to differ for interval and screen‐detected cancers. However, the extent to which associations of other established breast cancer risk factors differ by mode of detection is unclear. We investigated associations of a wide range of risk factors using data from a large UK cohort with linkage to the National Health Service Breast Screening Programme, cancer registration, and other health records. We used Cox regression to estimate adjusted relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for associations between risk factors and breast cancer risk. A total of 9421 screen‐detected and 5166 interval cancers were diagnosed in 517,555 women who were followed for an average of 9.72 years. We observed the following differences in risk factor associations by mode of detection: greater body mass index (BMI) was associated with a smaller increased risk of interval (RR per 5 unit increase 1.07, 95% CI 1.03–1.11) than screen‐detected cancer (RR 1.27, 1.23–1.30); having a first‐degree family history was associated with a greater increased risk of interval (RR 1.81, 1.68–1.95) than screen‐detected cancer (RR 1.52, 1.43–1.61); and having had previous breast surgery was associated with a greater increased risk of interval (RR 1.85, 1.72–1.99) than screen‐detected cancer (RR 1.34, 1.26–1.42). As these differences in associations were relatively unchanged after adjustment for tumour grade, and are in line with the effects of these factors on mammographic density, they are likely to reflect the effects of these risk factors on screening sensitivity. Protected areas globally serve as crucial sanctuaries for biodiversity, playing a pivotal role in conserving endangered species and maintaining ecological balance. In the United Kingdom (UK), 25% of land is currently designated as public protected areas and discussions are underway regarding the implementation of new protected areas, including the establishment of new National Parks in all four nations of the UK. Wild places have an important role to play in understanding and deciding where public protected areas should or could be. People form profound connections to wild places locally and nationally. We used two online surveys to gather information on the UK public's local and national favourite wild places, and the characteristics of those places which make them their top choice. Our analysis revealed that respondents preferred different wild places based on their survey group, with significant differences in the importance placed on characteristics like ‘Accessibility’, ‘Nature’ and ‘Scenery’ across local and national scales. Demographic factors, including age and settlement, had some impact, but the overall importance of characteristics like ‘Peace and Quiet’ and ‘Nature’ were consistently high across both surveys. Recognising the prevalence of favourite wild places outside of designated areas underscores the importance of engaging the different viewpoints of the public in conservation initiatives, and indicates that public support for conservation might extend beyond officially protected regions. ABSTRACT From early in the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic, there was interest in using machine learning methods to predict COVID‐19 infection status based on vocal audio signals, for example, cough recordings. However, early studies had limitations in terms of data collection and of how the performances of the proposed predictive models were assessed. This article describes how these limitations have been overcome in a study carried out by the Turing‐RSS Health Data Laboratory and the UK Health Security Agency. As part of the study, the UK Health Security Agency collected a dataset of acoustic recordings, SARS‐CoV‐2 infection status and extensive study participant meta‐data. This allowed us to rigorously assess state‐of‐the‐art machine learning techniques to predict SARS‐CoV‐2 infection status based on vocal audio signals. The lessons learned from this project should inform future studies on statistical evaluation methods to assess the performance of machine learning techniques for public health tasks. In her 2024 Mais lecture, soon‐to‐be chancellor Rachel Reeves made the case for prioritising national economic security over the pursuit of ‘hyperglobalisation’. She put national economic productivity improvements at the heart of Labour's political‐economic strategy, reflecting the emergence of a dual consensus on economic government that has developed independently of the Labour Party in recent years. Reeves has recognised that this offers space for the pursuit of a moderate social democratic agenda, but the political challenge for the Labour government will be to maintain public support until its gradualist growth policies begin to take effect. This paper reflects on the research process and ethics of doing research with low‐income households in Stoke‐on‐Trent, UK, during the coronavirus (COVID‐19) pandemic. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork with five mothers experiencing food insecurity, I argue that it is imperative that researchers employ ‘care‐full’, slow, flexible methodologies situated within everyday lives to ensure that research with vulnerable and precarious groups of people is not exploitative, especially during times of crisis. The emergency public health measures introduced to contain COVID‐19 in March 2020 acted like a brake on my research activities, slowing things down, limiting the methods available to me, and ultimately, provoking a reimagining of my original research design. I make two contributions. First, building on feminist geographical scholarship on care and reflexivity, and calls for ‘slow’ research that prioritises the shifting needs of researchers and participants, I suggest adopting a relational approach to take account of participant subjectivities in order to minimise disruption in their everyday lives. Second, through discussing the ways in which I employed the mobile phone to continue gathering data with participant mothers during COVID‐19, I build on nascent geographical and methodological conversations about the role of technologies in the design and implementation of care‐full research. In highlighting the limitations of the mobile phone as a research device in this context, I extend current limited understandings of utilising mobile phones to gather data in the course of conducting research with marginalised people. Climate change poses a massive and growing threat to wildlife. Calls are growing for coordinated and collaborative responses to conserve species threatened by climate change, but how this works in practice remains largely unexplored. Focusing on seabirds in North‐West Europe, we carried out 32 semi‐structured stakeholder interviews to (1) explore existing conservation work linked to climate change, (2) identify barriers to work on climate change among conservation actors, and (3) identify key conservation actors and characterize their interactions. Interviewees identified a range of research, policy, and practical conservation work for seabirds related—directly or indirectly—to climate change. They highlighted the importance of general conservation work to facilitate seabird adaptation to climate change, and global mitigation of climate change (e.g., through decarbonization and ecosystem restoration). Interviewees identified several barriers to conservation work explicitly addressing climate change, pertaining to information, leadership, resources, and values/beliefs. We discovered that seabird conservation networks are generally well‐established and harmonious, but not tension‐free. There are also some misunderstandings over actor responsibilities that could lead to bystander effects. Historically, the cy‐près doctrine required that, upon the substantive alteration of a charitable trust, the new purposes should be 'as near as possible' to the old. This is no longer the case. Subject to section 67(3) of the Charities Act 2011, the redrafting court or Charity Commission must have regard to factors other than proximity of purpose. Zedra Fiduciary Services (UK) Ltd v Attorney General is the first high‐level authority to consider the meaning of the statute, and, with it, the scope of the contemporary statutory cy‐près doctrine. This note argues that the Court of Appeal read down the statutory factors conservatively, prioritising fidelity to the original objects of the trust. The note considers the method of the Court and suggests that a more creative approach might have been taken. In recent years, a number of academics, judges and politicians have noted that the UK Supreme Court has adopted a more restrained approach when it comes to public law than it had done previously. This article assesses the quantitative and qualitative evidence for this apparent conservative turn. It finds that, in a number of important respects, the Court has indeed adopted a more restrained approach to public law issues in recent years. However, conservatism and caution are not apparent across the board, and there are a number of areas in which the approach of the Court has been anything but restrained. Overall, the Court should not be considered ideologically conservative, nor should it be deemed constitutionally supine. Rather, it is most accurate to suggest that the Court is basing its judgments on a vision of the law rooted in the tradition of political constitutionalism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Caregivers play an essential role in supporting people with Alzheimer's disease globally. User‐informed research is vital to developing trans‐cultural guidelines for dementia support organisations. While coping strategies of caregivers are well researched, the 'coping‐effectiveness' framework falls short of representing all caregiver needs. Our aim was to develop a robust and inclusive, globally applicable framework of caregiver‐informed support needs. Methods: In partnership with Alzheimer's Disease International and Roche, we conducted qualitative online semi‐structured interviews with 34 family caregivers from the Global North (UK, US) and Global South (Brazil, South Africa) in the COVID‐19 context. Participant‐generated photographs helped encourage discussions of hidden contextual issues. Iterative inductive narrative analysis of interviews and photographs was carried out with input from global and national charity and industry sectors. Results: We identified a framework of four cross‐cultural caring approaches with implications for support: (1) Empathising, using emotion‐focused strategies to develop strong expertise and coping skills, with time specific information, psychosocial and peer support needs. (2) Organising, using problem‐focused strategies, with strong narratives of expertise and advocacy which benefited from early structured information and professional confirmation. (3) Non‐identifying caregiving, where daily aspects of caring occurred without specialist knowledge and expertise, and caregivers sought assistance in managing disease‐related support. (4) Reluctance, where struggling with unwanted caring responsibilities meant caregivers looked to professionals to carry out daily care. Conclusion: Our findings move beyond the 'coping‐effectiveness' framework of support to suggest a novel 'role‐needs' framework. Step cadence‐based and machine‐learning (ML) methods have been used to classify physical activity (PA) intensity in health‐related research. This study examined the association of intensity‐specific PA duration with all‐cause (ACM) and CVD mortality using the cadence‐based and ML methods in 68 561 UK Biobank participants wearing wrist‐worn accelerometers. The two‐stage‐ML method categorized activity type and then intensity. The one‐level‐cadence‐method (1LC) derived intensity‐specific duration using all detected steps (including standing utilitarian steps) and cadence thresholds of ≥100 steps/min (moderate intensity) and ≥130 steps/min (vigorous intensity). The two‐level‐cadence‐method (2LC) detected ambulatory steps (i.e., walking and running) and then applied the same cadence thresholds. The 2LC exhibited the most pronounced association at the lower end of duration spectrum. For example, the 2LC showed the smallest minimum moderate‐to‐vigorous‐PA (MVPA) duration (amount associated with 50% of optimal risk reduction) with similar corresponding ACM hazard ratio (HR) to other methods (2LC: 2.8 min/day [95% CI: 2.6, 2.8], HR: 0.83 [95% CI: 0.78, 0.88]; 1LC, 11.1[10.8, 11.4], 0.80 [0.76, 0.85]; ML, 14.9 [14.6, 15.2], 0.82 [0.76, 0.87]). The ML elicited the greatest mortality risk reduction. For example, the medians and corresponding HR in VPA‐ACM association: 2LC, 2.0 min/day [95% CI: 2.0, 2.0], HR, 0.69 [95% CI: 0.61, 0.79]; 1LC, 6.9 [6.9, 7.0], 0.68 [0.60, 0.77]; ML, 3.2 [3.2, 3.2], 0.53 [0.44, 0.64]. After standardizing durations, the ML exhibited the most pronounced associations. For example, the standardized minimum durations in MPA‐CVD mortality association were: 2LC, −0.77; 1LC, −0.85; ML, −0.94; with corresponding HR of 0.82 [0.72, 0.92], 0.79 [0.69, 0.90], and 0.77 [0.69, 0.85], respectively. The 2LC exhibited the most pronounced association with all‐cause and CVD mortality at the lower end of the duration spectrum. The ML method provided the most pronounced association with all‐cause and CVD mortality, thus might be appropriate for estimating health benefits of moderate and vigorous intensity PA in observational studies. The difficulties faced by youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) and their families as they move into adulthood are widely documented. The aim of the paper is to explore the current situation in terms of transition processes and outcomes in four countries (the US, UK, Australia and Czech Republic) and identify commonalities and differences that help elucidate what might determine different outcomes. Two research methods—expert knowledge and rapid literature review—were combined to identify sources from which information on transition policy, processes, support practices and outcomes was extracted and synthesised. This review identified gaps in the research evidence including inadequate collection and use of data to drive policy and determine effectiveness, limited evidence‐based models or frameworks for successful transition. There was little transition research that included the voices of young people with IDD. More research is necessary to study the practices of highly successful programmes, and to explore the impact of transition programmes and disability support services on a broader range of outcomes, capturing the experiences of young people themselves and identifying factors that determine successful outcomes. Homelessness is a worldwide health inequality. People with intellectual disability represent a relatively high proportion of homeless people, and for many their intellectual disability is not recognised. The study intended to obtain stakeholder views about how intellectual disability screening can be integrated into the support pathway for people who are homeless. A qualitative approach was taken using Thematic Analysis. Nine staff, who work with homeless people or are involved in the intellectual disability assessment pathway, were interviewed. Analysis produced three themes, each containing two subthemes. 'Current routes to support' investigates experiences of the existing pathway; 'Labels', explores views about making intellectual disability visible; 'Creating a pathway,' outlines ideas about developing and implementing a screening pathway between services. The results help inform how current practices of identifying people with intellectual disability might be improved and the role of screening in this. These results, when combined with other research around screening tools, provide insight into how intellectual disability screening can be integrated within services. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Aims: Histopathological diagnosis is the gold standard in many acquired inflammatory, infiltrative and amyloid based peripheral nerve diseases and a sensory nerve biopsy of sural or superficial peroneal nerve is favoured where a biopsy is deemed necessary. The ability to determine nerve pathology by high‐resolution imaging techniques resolving anatomy and imaging characteristics might improve diagnosis and obviate the need for biopsy in some. The sural nerve is anatomically variable and occasionally adjacent vessels can be sent for analysis in error. Knowing the exact position and relationships of the nerve prior to surgery could be clinically useful and thus reliably resolving nerve position has some utility. Methods: 7T images of eight healthy volunteers' (HV) right ankle were acquired in a pilot study using a double‐echo in steady‐state sequence for high‐resolution anatomy images. Magnetic Transfer Ratio images were acquired of the same area. Systematic scoring of the sural, tibial and deep peroneal nerve around the surgical landmark 7 cm from the lateral malleolus was performed (number of fascicles, area in voxels and mm2, diameter and location relative to nearby vessels and muscles). Results: The sural and tibial nerves were visualised in the high‐resolution double‐echo in steady‐state (DESS) image in all HV. The deep peroneal nerve was not always visualised at level of interest. The MTR values were tightly grouped except in the sural nerve where the nerve was not visualised in two HV. The sural nerve location was found to be variable (e.g., lateral or medial to, or crossing behind, or found positioned directly posterior to the saphenous vein). Interpretation: High‐resolution high‐field images have excellent visualisation of the sural nerve and would give surgeons prior knowledge of the position before surgery. Basic imaging characteristics of the sural nerve can be acquired, but more detailed imaging characteristics are not easily evaluable in the very small sural and further developments and specific studies are required for any diagnostic utility at 7T. Older adults are persistently underrepresented in clinical drug trials worldwide, despite increasing multiple long‐term conditions and significant prescribing in this demographic. We discuss systemic challenges such as the exclusion of people with comorbid conditions and the lack of assessment for comorbidities as modifiers of treatment effects and highlight the rising trend of polypharmacy, especially among the oldest age groups, which is linked to a significant percentage of unplanned hospitalizations and medication errors. The consequences of these trends prompted the United Kingdom National Overprescribing review, culminating in a set of recommendations for drug development tailored to older adults. Building on this, two critical reports released in April 2023 by the International Longevity Centre (ILC) and the Nuffield Council on Bioethics (NCOB) are discussed. These reports emphasize the importance of diversity and inclusion in clinical trials, advocating for ethical frameworks and methodologies that cater to the complex needs of older adults. The development of inclusive criteria, innovative statistical methodologies, and the integration of patient‐reported outcomes are needed to address the persistent barriers to older adult participation in research, suggesting that pragmatic trials, exemplified by the UK's RECOVERY trial during the COVID‐19 pandemic, could pave the way for more inclusive research practices. Background: Stepping Stones Triple P (SSTP) is a complex parent‐mediated intervention aimed to reduce behaviours that challenge in children with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities, aged 30–59 months. Methods: To formulate a comprehensive understanding of SSTP implementation in the UK, we conducted a process evaluation collecting stakeholder views and considering intervention fidelity, dose, reach, delivery adaptations, and acceptability. Results: Fidelity and quality of delivery ratings were high. Parents perceived SSTP as valuable, reporting increased parental confidence and understanding of the child's behaviours. However, only 30% of families received an adequate dose of the intervention. Parents who only received treatment as usual described feeling abandoned by current services. Service managers emphasised the importance of availability of resources and therapist training for successful intervention delivery. Conclusions: SSTP supports effective management of early‐onset behaviours that challenge. Further work is needed to ensure equitable access to the intervention across health and social care services. Background and aims: High‐potency cannabis has been associated with increased risk of psychosis, but a lack of prospective data hinders understanding of causality in this relationship. This study aimed to combine prospective report of cannabis use with retrospective report of potency to infer the potency of cannabis used in adolescence and explore whether use of cannabis, and the use of high‐potency cannabis, in adolescence is associated with incident psychotic experiences. Design: Population‐based birth cohort study. Setting: United Kingdom. Participants: n = 5570 participants who reported on any cannabis use (yes/no) age 16 and 18 years, and n = 1560 participants from this group who also retrospectively reported on cannabis potency. Measurements In questionnaires at ages 16 and 18, individuals self‐reported lifetime cannabis use, and at age 24, participants reported the type of cannabis they most commonly used in the whole time since first using cannabis. Psychotic experiences were assessed at age 24 years using the semi‐structured Psychosis‐Like Symptom Interview, with incident defined as new‐onset occurring between ages 19 and 24 years. Findings Use of high‐potency cannabis at age 16 or 18 was associated with twice the likelihood of experiencing incident psychotic experiences from age 19–24 (Odds Ratio 2.15, 95% Confidence Intervals 1.13–4.06). There was less evidence for an effect of any cannabis use on incident psychotic experiences (Odds Ratio 1.45, 95% Confidence Intervals 0.94–2.12). Conclusions: Use of high‐potency cannabis appears to be associated with increased likelihood of psychotic experiences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: It is estimated that 78% of children experience the death of a close friend or family member by 16 years of age, yet longitudinal research examining the mental health outcomes of wider experiences of bereavement is scarce. We conducted a longitudinal investigation of the association between maternal experienced bereavement before the age of 11 years and offspring depressive and anxiety disorders at age 18 and examined moderation of this association by modifiable parental factors. Methods: We analysed data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, a UK‐based birth cohort, including 9,088 child participants with data available on bereavement. Bereavement was measured via maternal report at eight timepoints until children were 11 years. Offspring depressive and anxiety‐related disorders were self‐reported at 18 years old using the Clinical Interview Schedule‐Revised (CIS‐R). The potential moderating roles of maternal anxiety, maternal depression, parental monitoring, positive parenting and negative parenting practices were examined. Results: Maternal experienced bereavement was not associated with depression or anxiety‐related disorders in early adulthood among offspring. In addition, no support was found for negative parenting practices, parental monitoring or maternal anxiety and depression as moderators of the relationship between maternal experienced bereavement and offspring mental health problems at 18 years old. Findings in relation to the moderating role of positive parenting practices were inconsistent. Conclusions: Findings suggest that a large number of children are exposed to maternal experienced bereavement. We found no evidence that maternal experienced bereavement during childhood increases the risk for offspring psychiatric disorders in early adulthood. Is it foolish to talk or write about hope in the face of widespread existential crises? Our answer is 'no'. On the contrary, hope is more necessary the bleaker things become. In this article, we explore hope as a practice. Influenced by the abolition geography of Ruth Wilson Gilmore, we build on John Holloway's argument that such practices start from ourselves, where we are and our own capacities, and overflow that which contains us. We write as resident‐activists within three community organisations in the place we live in. Extending existing geographical literature, we show how our resident‐activism is distinct from, yet also entangled with, scholar‐activism and the struggles, contradictions and potential solidarities found in the UK's marketised universities. This way of working can itself be seen as a practice of hope. The article further explores practices of hope that emerge within the three organisations. Though emplaced, these practices are not confined in space or time, drawing rather on history as a resource and connecting with broader national and international processes. The article concludes by using Holloway's concept of rage‐joy to bring together practices of hope across the three organisations and among us as resident‐activists and participants in industrial action over pay, casualisation, workloads, equalities and pensions in UK universities. Objectives: People with psychosis delay accessing recommended treatments, resulting in poor healthcare outcomes and increased risk of relapse. Means of improving help‐seeking and help‐acceptance could reduce duration of untreated psychosis (DUP). This study examined the role of attachment style in help‐seeking and help‐acceptance in psychosis. Design: We used an experimental design to test the effect of attachment imagery priming on help‐seeking and help‐acceptance intentions, in a sample with self‐reported psychosis. The independent variables were attachment imagery condition (secure vs. avoidant) and time (pre‐ vs. post‐prime). The dependent variables were state paranoia, help‐seeking intentions and help‐acceptance intentions. Methods: We used an online research platform to recruit people with psychosis (n = 61). Participants were randomly allocated to the secure or avoidant attachment priming condition. All completed measures of state paranoia, help‐seeking, and help‐acceptance, before and after priming. Results: In comparison with the avoidant condition, secure attachment imagery resulted in reduced paranoia and increased help‐seeking and acceptance intentions, all with large effect sizes. Conclusions: This is the first study to use an experimental design to assess the role of attachment style in help‐seeking and help‐acceptance in a clinical sample. Attachment style is causally linked to behavioural intentions that contribute to DUP. Clinicians should assess attachment and help‐seeking and acceptance, highlight these in formulation, and prioritise in treatment planning. This qualitative study captured the reflections of 53 English language teachers from 40 different contexts including Bangladesh, Colombia, France, India, Scotland, Taiwan, Türkiye and the United Kingdom on teaching English during the times of COVID‐19 and its post‐effects on their practices. Data were collected through an online form consisting of three stems and the participants were asked to create similes about teaching English before, during and after the pandemic. By conducting thematic analysis, images created for each phase were categorized under occupational well‐being, digital transformation, transactional distance, gap of communication and social isolation. Teachers pointed out work overload, lack of administrational support, instructions' not making sense, decreasing level of participation, dropouts, loss of student–teacher interaction and isolation as the drawbacks of the process along with the possibility of digital transformation ahead of their profession. Background: Despite increasing evidence of the potential inaccuracy and unwarranted practice of regular GRV measurement in critically in adults, this practice persists within the United Kingdom. Aim: To explore adult intensive care nurses' decision‐making around the practice of GRV measurement to guide enteral feeding. Study Design: A cross‐sectional 16 item electronic survey in four adult intensive care units (ICUs) in England and Wales. Results: Two hundred and seventy‐three responses were obtained across four ICUs with acceptable response rates for most [Unit 1 74 /127 = 58.2%; Unit 2 87/129 = 67.4%; Unit 3 77/120 = 64.1%; Unit 4 35/168 = 20.8%]. Most (243/273 (89%) reported measuring GRV 4–6 hourly, with most (223/273 82%) reporting that the main reason was to assess feed tolerance or intolerance and 37/273 (13.5%) saying their unit protocol required it. In terms of factors affecting decision‐making, volume obtained was the most important factor, followed by the condition of the patient, with aspirate colour and appearance less important. When asked how they would feel about not measuring GRV routinely, the majority (78.2%) of nurses felt worried (140/273 = 51.2%) or very worried (74/273 = 27%). Conclusions: Factors affecting the nurses' decision‐making around GRV were based largely on fear of risk (around vomiting and pulmonary aspiration) and compliance with unit protocols. Relevance to Clinical Practice: Despite increasing evidence suggesting it is unnecessary, nurses' beliefs around the value of this practice persist and it continues to be embedded into unit protocols around feeding. Background: Patients with long term and additional needs (LEAP) in paediatric intensive care units (PICUs) are a growing and heterogenous cohort that provide unique challenges to clinicians. Currently no standard approach to define and manage this cohort exists. Aim: To analyse bed occupancy, examine current practice, and explore ideas to improve PICU care of patients with long term and additional needs. Study Design: Patients with LEAP were defined as meeting two or more of the following criteria: length of stay >14 days; life limiting condition; ≥2 failed extubations; hospital stay >1 month prior to PICU admission; likely to require long‐term ventilation. An electronic survey was then sent to all UK PICUs, via the UK Paediatric Critical Care Society, to collect quantitative and qualitative data relating to bed occupancy, length of stay, multidisciplinary and family involvement, and areas of possible improvement. Data collection were occurred between 8 February 2022 and 14 March 2022. Quantitative data were analysed using Microsoft Excel 365 and SPSS Statistics version 28.0. Raw data and descriptive statistics were reported, including percentages and median with interquartile range for non‐parametric data. Qualitative raw data were examined using thematic analysis. Analysis was undertaken independently by two authors and results assessed for concordance. Results: 70.1% (17/24) PICUs responded. 25% (67/259) of PICU beds were occupied by patients with long term and additional needs. 29% (5/17) of responding units have tailored management plans to this cohort of patient. A further 11% (2/17) have guidelines for children with generic chronic illness. 12% (2/16) of responding units had a designated area and 81% (13/16) of responding units had designated professionals. The majority (68% and 62%) of responding units engaged families and community professionals in multidisciplinary meetings. When asked how the care of long term and additional needs patients might be improved five themes were identified: consistent, streamlined care pathways; designated transitional care units; designated funding and hospital‐to‐home commissioning; development of roles to facilitate collaboration between hospital and community teams; proactive discharge planning and parallel planning. Conclusions: This survey provides a snapshot of UK practice for a cohort of patients that occupies a considerable proportion (29%) of PICU beds. While only a minority of responding PICUs offer specifically tailored management plans, the majority of units have designated professionals. Relevance to Clinical Practice: Opportunities exist to improve PICU care in LEAP patients in areas such as: streamlined care pathways, designated clinical areas, designated funding, and development of defined collaborative roles. Co‐production is a collaborative way of working which emphasises the exchange of diverse forms of knowledge in an equal partnership for equal benefits. Co‐produced research is a key strategic aim of the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) Transforming UK Food Systems (TUKFS) Strategic Priorities Fund; this research programme brings together researchers, policymakers, industry and communities to create positive change in the way food is produced, accessed and consumed. However, more generally, there are diverse understandings of co‐production and a lack of consensus on what 'good practice' looks like. Therefore, this study aimed to identify and map examples of co‐production methods employed across the TUKFS programme. Two creative workshops (n = 15 participants), conversations with TUKFS researchers and stakeholders (n = 15), and systematic analysis of project documents were used to critically explore co‐production activities within six TUKFS projects. A range of co‐production activities were identified. Findings highlighted areas of 'messiness' and complexity, challenges associated with applying co‐production approaches and practical solutions. Four key shared principles for co‐production were identified: (1) Relationships: developing and maintaining reciprocity‐based partnerships; (2) Knowledge: recognising the contribution of diverse forms of expertise; (3) Power: considering power dynamics and addressing imbalances; and (4) Inclusivity: ensuring research is accessible to all who wish to participate. Opportunities for reflection and reflexivity were considered crucial across all these areas. Findings contribute important insights towards a shared conceptual understanding of co‐production for food system transformation research. Diet has been repeatedly shown to affect mental and sleep health outcomes. However, it is well known that there are cross‐cultural differences in dietary practices as well as the prevalence of mental and sleep health outcomes. Given that the dietary inflammatory potential of diets has been linked to mental and sleep health outcomes, in the current study we sought to assess the inflammatory status of habitual diets and examine its relationship with mental and sleep health outcomes in both the United Kingdom and Japan. Our aim was to determine if the associations between the dietary inflammation index (DII) score and these health outcomes could elucidate any potential cross‐cultural differences in health. Online survey data was collected from 602 participants (aged 18–40 years) in the United Kingdom (n = 288) and Japan (n = 314). Participants self‐reported their dietary intakes, as well as current mental health and sleep patterns. The DII score was calculated (score range − 2.79 to 3.49) We found that although participants in the United Kingdom reported better overall mental wellbeing, participants in Japan reported less severe depression, anxiety and stress and better subjective sleep quality, less sleep disturbances and daytime dysfunction, despite sleeping shorter, and a better adherence to an anti‐inflammatory diet. Moreover, across the United Kingdom and Japan, adherence to more anti‐inflammatory diets predicted higher levels of subjective sleep quality, fewer sleep disturbances, less use of sleep medicine and less daytime dysfunction. In conclusion, there are several differences between mental and sleep health outcomes in the United Kingdom and Japan, which could be attributable to the inflammatory potential of respective regional diets. Future studies are warranted to examine the mental and sleep health benefits of adhering to anti‐inflammatory traditional Japanese diets in clinical and subclinical cohorts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The prevalence of mental health issues among UK undergraduate students is growing, and poor diet quality appears to be a risk factor for poor mental health although with limited research in this area. Therefore, the objective of this study was to examine the cross‐sectional associations between diet quality and common mental disorders (CMD) such as depression and anxiety in UK undergraduate students. A cross‐sectional survey consisting of demographic information and validated questionnaires (the Short‐Form Food Frequency Questionnaire [SFFFQ] and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale [HADS]) was conducted to measure diet quality and anxiety and depression in young adults in 44 UK‐based universities. Multiple regression analysis adjusting for confounding factors was used to assess the associations between them. Undergraduate university students (n = 202, 67% female) with a mean age of 20.9 ± 3.6 years and a mean body mass index (n = 170) of 22.6 ± 3.2 kg/m2 took part in the study. Prevalence of anxiety was high, with 40% of the sample having an anxiety score in the severe range (≥12 points) while the prevalence of depression was lower, with 6% of the population having a depression score in the severe range (≥12 points). Diet quality was significantly higher for females than males (p = 0.034) and was poor for 38% of the sample, being more common in males compared to females, although not significantly so (43% and 36%, respectively). Diet quality was inversely associated with anxiety (β = −0.427; p = 0.029) and was more likely to be associated with anxiety in females than males (β = 0.743; p = 0.043). No significant relationship between diet quality and depression was found. Better self‐reported health, father's qualification and smoking status were also associated with less anxiety and depression. This research supports other research suggesting that UK universities should explore whether the implementation of dietary interventions and improving the food environment would be a cost‐effective option to reduce the high prevalence of anxiety among students. Our food system is giving rise to a growing social, health and environmental crisis. Much of the food consumed in the United Kingdom is cheap, nutrient‐poor and highly processed, leading to under‐consumption of essential foods such as grains, beans, vegetables and fruit. This has contributed to a rise in diet‐related diseases, with approximately 22% of primary school leavers being overweight or obese. Food production is unsustainable with agriculture responsible for 10% of the UK's greenhouse gas emissions and intensive farming practices have led to a significant loss of soil carbon and a decline in biodiversity. COVID‐19 increased inequalities in our food system. Therefore, there is an urgent need for interventions to counteract these adverse social, health and environmental impacts. Education can play a crucial role as an intervention to address challenges in the food system. We tested an innovative school initiative using portable aquaponic pods and aligned to the national curriculum, to engage pupils in food production and foster learning about sustainability, climate change and healthy eating. The evaluation, based on teacher surveys, aquapod chart data, student blogs and postcards and feedback from the development team, revealed positive impacts on students' environmental awareness, as well as sustainability and practical food production knowledge. However, the programme encountered logistical challenges and we therefore highlight future improvements to produce a curriculum programme that can be delivered at scale to enhance food education and empower pupils to drive the agenda on tackling food sustainability and climate change. This paper explores cognitive place associations; conceptualised as a place‐based mental model that derives subconscious links between geographic locations. Utilising a large corpus of online discussion data from the social media website Reddit, we experiment on the extraction of such geographic knowledge from unstructured text. First we construct a system to identify place names found in Reddit comments, disambiguating each to a set of coordinates where possible. Following this, we build a collective picture of cognitive place associations in the United Kingdom, linking locations that co‐occur in user comments and evaluating the effect of distance on the strength of these associations. Exploring these geographies nationally, associations were shown to be typically weaker over greater distances. This distance decay is also highly regional, rural areas typically have greater levels of distance decay, particularly in Wales and Scotland. Background: Across the life course, women and girls with learning disabilities and their carers report difficulties in accessing information and support with menstruation, yet their experiences are often overlooked in initiatives to improve menstrual health and wellbeing. Our aim was to collaborate with women with learning disabilities to co‐produce future research priorities in a UK context. Methods: We undertook a two‐part scoping exercise to explore what is known about this topic from a life course perspective, beginning pre‐menarche and extending to post‐menopause support. This combined a rapid scoping review of the literature since 1980 with a stakeholder consultation where people with learning disabilities, family carers, advocacy groups and staff working across education, health and social care were invited to share their experiences of menstruation support. Findings: UK and international literature provided insight across five narrative themes. Seventy stakeholders took part in our consultation, enabling the identification of five key themes. Findings across both highlight examples of supportive practice and valued resources alongside enduring health inequalities and barriers to menstruation support faced by women and girls with learning disabilities across the life course. Conclusion: Our scoping exercise identified multiple gaps in research and practice, ongoing reproductive health inequalities and a need for improved access to peer support, resources and training that take a life course approach. The scoping exercise indicates the need for further empirical research on menstruation and learning disability, with a particular focus on collating people's lived experiences. Assisted reproduction often involves biological contributions by third parties such as egg/sperm donors, mitochondrial DNA donors, and surrogate mothers. However, these arrangements are also characterised by a biological relationship between the child and at least one intending parent. For example, one or both intending parents might use their own eggs/sperm in surrogacy, or an intending mother might conceive using donor sperm or gestate a donor embryo. What happens when this relationship is absent, as in the case of 'double‐donor surrogacy' arrangements (DDS)? Here, a child is conceived using both donor eggs and sperm, carried by a surrogate, and raised by the commissioning parents. In this paper, I critically examine proposals to allow DDS in the United Kingdom, and the intentionalist justification for treating this practice distinctly (morally and legally speaking) from private adoption. I argue that the intentionalist approach cannot plausibly justify such a distinction and that other approaches to moral parenthood are also unlikely to succeed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With its focus on the species level of the Anthropos, there is growing concern that the Anthropocene analytic lacks the conceptual nuance needed to grapple with the unevenly distributed harms and responsibilities tied up with issues of biodiversity loss, global warming, and land use change. Conceptual variants like the patchy Anthropocene have been proposed to better capture the justice implications of these socio‐ecological crises, directing attention to their spatially ubiquitous yet context‐specific character. The figure of the plantation has come to play an important role in this scholarship due to the contribution intensive agriculture had made to these interlinking crises. Through empirical study of the regenerative agricultural movement, this paper reflects on how regenerative farmers use different sites (fields, soils, livestock stomachs) to apprehend their agro‐ethical responsibilities to more‐than‐human actors both near to and far from the landscapes they manage. Our aims here are two‐fold. First, we provide a more affirmative account of agricultural management than is currently offered by plantation farming: a model of food production that is not just 'in' the Anthropocene, but 'for' it. Second, we contribute to ongoing discussions unfolding in the social sciences around the tools needed to conceptualise the interlinking spatial and justice aspects of the Anthropocene transition. By bringing the patchy analytic into conversation with more established geographic writing on scale, volume, and horizontal connections, we show the merit of juxtaposing multiple models of spatial relation as a way of gaining ethical and conceptual traction on complex socio‐ecological issues. We argue that the 'polymorphic' spatial imaginaries of regenerative agriculturalists can offer some guidance on the tools needed to attend to the specificity of local Anthropocene outcomes in relation to socio‐ecological forces actuating the world at much greater spatio‐temporal scales. Through a Foucauldian lens, this qualitative study explored the perspectives and lived conditions of children's experiences of social media surveillance. Sixteen children between the ages of 10 and 11 years old participated in the creative method of collaging with an unstructured interview in four schools in South Wales, UK. Visual combined with verbal analysis found a nuanced picture of how social media surveillance has influenced children's cultural and social practices of their childhood. Despite the challenges of peer and adult control exemplified, children did demonstrate agency within their digital spaces. Policy implications should involve a stronger emphasis on developing children's emotional resilience and discernment surrounding perceived surveillance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Black queer men in the UK are increasingly at risk of mental health problems related to anxiety and depression, often triggered by traumatic experiences. This study explored the efficacy of integrative practice with Black queer men who experienced trauma from a decolonised, intersectional and queer‐affirming perspective. Method: One‐to‐one semi‐structured interviews with nine integrative practitioners were completed. Data collected from these interviews were analysed using Braun and Clarke's six stages of reflexive thematic analysis (RTA). Findings: RTA identified four subordinate themes: (1) understanding the experience of Black queer men, (2) developing the working alliance and use of self in practice, (3) effective integrative practice and (4) intersectional differences and considerations. Findings discussed the varying forms of trauma Black queer male clients experienced that impacted their mental health and how developing a strong working alliance with Black queer men was crucial when supporting them to recover from trauma. Additionally, the participants described a breadth of trauma‐informed integrative counselling and coaching practice. A decolonised approach utilising the intersection of race, gender and sexuality of Black queer men was successfully integrated into the approach used by practitioners in this study. Conclusion: Overall, this study evidenced that a decolonised perspective to integrative practice effectively supports Black queer men to recover from trauma. Future research should focus on an integrated approach with Black queer men and other gender and sexual ethnic minority clients who experienced trauma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Although there is a small area of research exploring how mental health practitioners can support young people with the impacts of social media (SM) on their mental health, no study has researched into practitioners' own relationship with SM. This study aimed to explore counsellor's own relationship with SM, and how such insights contributed into their support to their clients who may be impacted by their engagement with SM. Methods: Counsellors who worked with young people aged 16–25 were recruited and interviewed. A reflexive thematic analysis of the interviews identified three main themes. Findings: The first theme "It's Not Based on Reality" related to counsellors comparing themselves to the unrealistic highlight reel depicted on SM in the same way as the young people they supported. The second theme "All Of a Sudden I'm on Facebook" explored the counsellor's obsessive use of SM yet they believed they were better able than their young clients to recognise when SM impacted their mood and to instigate boundaries by coming offline. The third theme "It's All About Trying to Be Relatable" highlighted counsellors' evaluation of efficacy of their own SM use to their therapeutic practice. Conclusion: Despite the noted parallels in SM use between counsellors and the young people they supported, counsellors believed their experiences of SM differed from their clients. This study provides implications for counsellor training when working with young people and the importance of counsellors' self‐care when using SM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Societal Impact Statement: Increasing crop productivity is often proposed as a key goal for meeting the food security demands of a growing global population. However, achieving high crop yields alone without meeting end‐use quality requirements is counter to this objective and can lead to negative environmental and sustainability issues. High yielding feed wheat crops in the United Kingdom are a typical example of this. The historical context of UK agricultural industrialisation, developments in plant breeding and wheat end‐use processing are examined. We then outline how employing innovations in plant breeding methods offer the potential to redress the balance between wheat quantity and quality. Summary: Bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) has historically been an important crop for many human civilisations. Today, variability in wheat supply and trade has a large influence on global economies and food security. The United Kingdom is an example of an industrialised country that achieves high wheat yields through intensive cropping systems and a favourable climate. However, only a minority of the wheat grain produced is of suitable end‐use quality for modern bread baking methods and most wheat produced is fed to livestock. A large agricultural land area and input use dedicated to producing grain for animal rather than human food has wide‐ranging negative impacts for environmental sustainability and domestic food production. Here we present an historical perspective of agricultural and economic changes that have resulted in UK production primarily focussing on wheat quantity over quality. Agricultural intensification, liberalisation of free trade in agricultural commodities, innovations in the milling and baking sector, developments in scientific understanding of genetics and plant breeding, and geopolitical changes have all played a role. We propose that wheat breeding plays a crucial role in influencing these issues and although wheat breeders in the United Kingdom have historically applied the most‐up‐to‐date scientific advances, recent advances in genomics tools and quantitative genetics present a unique opportunity for breeders to redress the balance between quantity and quality. Aim: To determine whether it was feasible, safe and acceptable for ambulance clinicians to use capillary blood ketone meters for 'high‐risk' diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) recognition and fluid initiation, to inform the need for a full‐powered, multi‐centre trial. Methods: Adopting a stepped‐wedge controlled design, participants with hyperglycaemia (capillary blood glucose >11.0 mmol/L) or diabetes and unwell were recruited. 'High‐risk' DKA intervention participants (capillary blood ketones ≥3.0 mmol/L) received paramedic‐led fluid therapy. Participant demographic and clinical data were collated from ambulance and hospital care records. Twenty ambulance and Emergency Department clinicians were interviewed to understand their hyperglycaemia and DKA care experiences. Results: In this study, 388 participants were recruited (Control: n = 203; Intervention: n = 185). Most presented with hyperglycaemia, and incidence of type 1 and type 2 diabetes was 18.5% and 74.3%, respectively. Ketone meter use facilitated 'high‐risk' DKA identification (control: 2.5%, n = 5; intervention: 6.5%, n = 12) and was associated with improved hospital pre‐alerting. Ambulance clinicians appeared to have a high index of suspicion for hospital‐diagnosed DKA participants. One third (33.3%; n = 3) of Control and almost half (45.5%; n = 5) of Intervention DKA participants received pre‐hospital fluid therapy. Key interview themes included clinical assessment, ambulance DKA fluid therapy, clinical handovers; decision support tool; hospital DKA management; barriers to hospital DKA care. Conclusions: Ambulance capillary blood ketone meter use was deemed feasible, safe and acceptable. Opportunities for improved clinical decision making, support and safety‐netting, as well as in‐hospital DKA care, were recognised. Aims: To examine the impact of current age, age at diagnosis, and duration of diabetes on the incidence rate of complications among people with type 2 diabetes. Methods: Baseline data from 19,327 individuals with type 2 diabetes in the UK Biobank were analysed. Poisson regression was used to model incidence rates by current age, age at diagnosis, and duration of diabetes for the following outcomes: myocardial infarction (MI), heart failure (HF), stroke, end‐stage kidney diseases (ESKD), chronic kidney diseases (CKD), liver diseases, depression, and anxiety. Results: The mean age at baseline was 60.2 years, and median follow‐up was 13.9 years. Diabetes duration was significantly longer among those with younger‐onset type 2 diabetes (diagnosed at <40 years) compared to later‐onset type 2 diabetes (diagnosed at ≥40 years), 16.2 and 5.3 years, respectively. Incidence rates of MI, HF, stroke, and CKD had strong positive associations with age and duration of diabetes, whereas incidence rates of ESKD liver diseases, and anxiety mainly depended on duration of diabetes. The incidence rates of depression showed minor variation by age and duration of diabetes and were highest among those diagnosed at earlier ages. No clear evidence of an effect of age of onset of diabetes on risk of complications was apparent after accounting for current age and duration of diabetes. Conclusions: Our study indicates age at diagnosis of diabetes does not significantly impact the incidence of complications, independently of the duration of diabetes. Aims: The direct cost of diabetes to the UK health system was estimated at around £10 billion in 2012. This analysis updates that estimate using more recent and accurate data sources. Methods: A pragmatic review of relevant data sources for UK nations was conducted, including population‐level data sets and published literature, to generate estimates of costs separately for Type 1, Type 2 and gestational diabetes. A comprehensive cost framework, developed in collaboration with experts, was used to create a population‐based cost of illness model. The key driver of the analysis was prevalence of diabetes and its complications. Estimates were made of the excess costs of diagnosis, treatment and diabetes‐related complications compared with the general UK population. Estimates of the indirect costs of diabetes focused on productivity losses due to absenteeism and premature mortality. Results: The direct costs of diabetes in 2021/22 for the UK were estimated at £10.7 billion, of which just over 40% related to diagnosis and treatment, with the rest relating to the excess costs of complications. Indirect costs were estimated at £3.3 billion. Conclusions: Diabetes remains a considerable cost burden in the UK, and the majority of those costs are still spent on potentially preventable complications. Although rates of some complications are reducing, prevalence continues to increase and effective approaches to primary and secondary prevention continue to be needed. Improvements in data capture, data quality and reporting, and further research on the human and financial implications of increasing incidence of Type 2 diabetes in younger people are recommended. Objective: The primary aim of this systematic review is to assess the effectiveness of evidence‐based healthcare (EBHC) educational interventions on healthcare professionals' knowledge, skills, attitudes, behaviour of EBHC, clinical process and care outcomes. A secondary aim of the review is to assess the effects of important pedagogical moderating factors for EBHC educational interventions. Method: This systematic review used a forward and backward citation search strategy on the Web of Science platform (date of inception to 28 April 2023). Only randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and cluster RCTs which compared EBHC educational interventions for healthcare professionals were included. A random effects meta‐analysis was undertaken for EBHC compared with an active and nonactive control for all outcomes. Results: Sixty‐one RCTs were identified which included a total of 5208 healthcare professionals. There was a large effect for EBHC educational interventions compared with waiting list/no treatment/sham control on knowledge (SMD, 2.69; 95% CI, 1.26–4.14, GRADE Low), skills (SMD, 0.88; 95% CI, 0.25–1.73, Very Low Certainty), attitude (SMD, 0.81; 95% CI, 0.16–1.47, Very Low Certainty) and behaviour of EBHC (SMD, 0.82; 95% CI, 0.25–1.40, Very Low Certainty). Over time the effect of EBHC educational interventions substantially decreased with no evidence of effect at 6 months for any outcome except behaviour (SMD,1.72; 95% CI, 0.74–2.71, Low Certainty). There was some evidence that blended learning, active learning and consistency in the individual delivering the intervention may be important positive moderating factors. Conclusion: These findings suggest that EBHC educational interventions may have a large short‐term effect on improving healthcare professionals' knowledge, skills, attitude and behaviour of EBHC. These effects may be longer‐lasting regarding EBHC behaviour. Background: Social connections between medical students provide a key basis for learning and support. These connections, and associated social identity, may be patterned by ethnicity, and students often perform similarly academically to those they connect with. The mechanisms that underpin the formation of these connections and the role that they play are not fully understood. This study explored how medical students connect with each other, and the potential impact of this on their academic attainment and well‐being, with a focus on students with minoritised ethnic identities. Methods: A mixed methods study combining (1) a survey to establish the number and strength of connections formed by Years 1 and 2 medical students with both minoritised and non‐minoritised ethnicities and (2) semi‐structured interviews to understand how connections were formed, whether this was shaped by ethnicity and the role of connections in supporting students with their learning and well‐being. Results: One hundred fifty‐one students (15.5% response rate) completed the survey. Students connected regularly with three to four peers with the goal of supporting learning and 71.9% of students reported a sense of social identification with this group. There was no statistical difference between ethnically minoritised and White students on either of these measures (t = 0.1, p = 0.92, χ2 = 2.9, p = 0.56). Interviews with 19 students found that social connections were shaped by perceptions of their self‐identity and the need to find 'equilibrium' by forming relationships with compatible others. The education environment, including its ethnic diversity, impacted on the opportunities to make connections. Students who were ethnically minoritised reported encountering challenges, especially in the clinical environment, and described the burden of these for them. Discussion: Curriculum designers should consider the time and space that is afforded to student interaction during course development, as finding compatible others with whom students can socially connect is important to balancing well‐being with academic performance. This study examined the relationship between early parental treatment, specifically reading to young children and later cognitive development with a Bayesian perspective. Previous research established a positive link between parental reading to infants and their cognitive development, such as receptive vocabulary, reading comprehension and motivation to read. Using data from the Millennium Cohort Study, this study analysed individuals aged 9 months to 14 years to investigate the effects of early reading to young children on nine cognitive variables. Bayesian statistical analysis controlled for pre‐existing differences and covariates to establish a causal association between reading and cognitive development. The results indicated that reading to infants and toddlers positively impacted their cognitive development beyond reading skills. These findings demonstrate the usefulness of the Bayesian approach in determining scientific significance and underscore the importance of early literacy interventions in promoting cognitive development.
