The Baiyinnuoer Pb–Zn deposit, estimated at 26.57 million metric tonnes (Mt) with grades of 1.77% Pb and 5.21% Zn, is situated in the southern Great Xing'an Range (SGXR) of northeast China. The deposit comprises southern and northern ore belts. The southern belt primarily contains skarn ore bodies (32% of reserves) associated with Triassic granodiorite, while the northern belt is dominated by skarn ore bodies (30% of reserves) related to Triassic diorite porphyry. In addition to Triassic skarn‐type mineralization, the deposit also exhibits Early Cretaceous mineralization. This includes vein‐type occurrences (36% of reserves) within volcanic tuff and syenite porphyry, alongside a small amount of skarn ore bodies (2% of reserves) related to syenite porphyry. LA‐ICP‐MS U–Pb dating of intrusive rocks and garnets was conducted to investigate the timing and genesis of these mineralization events, revealing two distinct stages of skarn‐type mineralization. The first stage, associated with Early Triassic granitoids, dates to 254.6 ± 1.4–241.7 ± 2.7 Ma, while the second stage is closely associated with Early Cretaceous syenite porphyry, constrained to 135.4 ± 1.1–135.2 ± 1.6 Ma. Garnet U–Pb dating in the syenite porphyry‐related skarn yielded an age of 134.9 ± 4.7 Ma; however, due to low U content, reliable dating of garnets associated with Early Triassic granitoid‐related skarn was not feasible. Micro‐thermometry and Laser Raman analyses of fluid inclusions within vein‐type ore bodies highlighted distinct differences between vein‐type mineralization and Early Triassic skarn‐type mineralization. Additionally, in situ sulfur isotope analyses of sphalerite from both Early Triassic and Early Cretaceous ore bodies indicate a magmatic origin for sulfur in both stages. Through comprehensive geological, geochronological, in situ sulfur isotope and fluid inclusion studies, the Baiyinnuoer Pb–Zn deposit is conclusively identified as a large deposit characterized by two distinct periods of mineralization (Early Triassic and Early Cretaceous), akin to several other significant polymetallic deposits in NE China. Whether the Yangtze Block was involved in the global late Mesoproterozoic orogeny remains contentious. The Mesoproterozoic Huodiya Group exposed in the Hannan‐Micangshan Massif on the northwestern margin of the Yangtze Block could provide sufficient evidence to further clarify the regional tectonic affinity. However, quantitative insights into the depositional age, provenance and basin tectonic setting of the Huodiya Group still lack comprehensively constraining. This study presents a combined analysis of zircon U–Pb dating for meta‐sedimentary rocks of the Shangliang Formation of the upper Huodiya Group and intruded gabbroic dykes. Intergraded dating results constrain the late Mesoproterozoic maximum depositional age at ca. 1050 Ma. Ca. 900 Ma formation age for the intruded gabbroic dyke, plus the minimum formation age of the overlying Xixiang Group at ca. 950 Ma, further suggests its deposition should be prior to ca. 950–900 Ma. Concordant detrital zircon ages define pronounced age clusters of ca. 2229–1741 and 2950–2388 Ma and few age populations of ca. 3232–3082 and 1069–1033 Ma, consistent with the tectonothermal events in proximal domains at the northwestern and northern Yangtze Block. Detrital zircon age distribution patterns and cumulative curves, coupled with the stable carbonate platform and shallow‐marine facies sedimentation, suggest a passive continental margin setting for the Huodiya Group on the Yangtze Block margin at the late Mesoproterozoic. Comparative insights into the contemporaneous passive continental margin from north to southwest argue against the existence of a late Mesoproterozoic orogeny along the exterior periphery of the Yangtze Block. The formation of rodingites has been a continually controversial topic, largely due to the absence of minerals that can be unambiguously dated. Here, we present a case study that utilized LA‐ICPMS garnet U–Pb dating, in conjunction with field investigations, petrology and Raman spectroscopy, to reveal the age and petrogenesis of rodingite in the northern North China Craton. The rodingites are spatially associated with mafic and alkaline rocks. Our findings indicate that rodingitization occurred at ca. 388 Ma, making it about 5–10 Myr younger than its mafic protoliths, but contemporaneous with the adjoining alkaline plutons. These observations suggest that the rodingitization may be attributed to hydrothermal fluids from the alkaline magmas. Our study emphasizes the importance of utilizing garnet U–Pb dating to determine the timing of rodingitization and introduces a novel perspective on the relationship between rodingitization and alkaline magmas in extensional continental settings. To date, the most complete paleolake‐level reconstructions for the late Pleistocene water bodies that once occupied the Dead Sea depression have been based on the combination of dating of lake sediments and terrestrial materials. However, despite these major accomplishments, there is still limited spatial control regarding the water levels, suggesting some degree of uncertainty concerning the magnitude and rate of lake‐level changes. Here, we re‐examine the late Pleistocene lake‐level changes in the Dead Sea during the transition from paleolake Lisan to the present‐day Dead Sea. We rely on systematic dating of fossil stromatolites including 84 radiocarbon and 15 U‐series ages, stable‐isotope measurements, paleobiology, high‐resolution topography, and numerical modeling to assess lake‐level changes. Our results indicate that the highstand of paleolake Lisan was of shorter duration and the transition between Lake Lisan and the Dead Sea occurred at least 5 Kyrs earlier than previously indicated. By refining the timeline and accuracy of lake‐level positions during the transition paleolake Lisan—Dead Sea, our study offers new insights into the regional and local paleo‐climatic conditions during the last glacial period in this region. Here we study lake‐level variations using index points based on geomorphic and biological markers collected along the western and eastern coasts of the Dead Sea. Previous studies indicate that during the last glacial period (20–30 ka), the Dead Sea depression was filled by paleolake Lisan, which lasted 10 Kyrs. As it dried, dozens of paleo‐shorelines remained etched in the landscape. Lake level index points estimated from 99 radiometric ages in these paleo‐shorelines suggest that Lisan's highstand was shorter and the transition to the Dead Sea occurred 5 Kyrs earlier than previously thought. These novel results suggest an initial and wet period followed by drier conditions, altering the regional paleo‐climatic narrative during the last glacial period. Fossils are valuable indicators of the evolutionary history of the clades to which they belong to, especially when they are incorporated as terminal taxa in a total‐evidence phylogeny. According to their state of preservation, fossils are often incompletely described for key morphological characters, such as genitalic structures. Here, the internal parts of the genitalia of a male fossil cricket from Cretaceous amber, †Picogryllus carentonensis Josse & Desutter‐Grandcolas (Oecanthidae, Podoscirtinae), together with other key morphological characters (i.e., metanotal structures and tibial spurs), were reconstructed for the first time by 3D microtomography. Total‐evidence phylogeny and dating combining morphological data (fossils and extant taxa), molecular data (extant taxa only) and time calibration (fossil dates) were performed to evaluate the tempo and mode of evolution of the cricket family Oecanthidae. Divergence time estimates were thus refined and the patterns of transformation for key morphological structures contrasted through the analysis of phylogenetic morphological partitions. Our results show that Oecanthidae date back to the Upper Jurassic (Oxfordian, around 162 Ma) and attest to the presence of the Podoscirtinae in Western Europe during the Lower Cretaceous. Morphological evolution may have been driven by the conquest of new resources (as shown by leg evolution in ancestral Oecanthidae) and/or the 'conquest of silence' (as shown by repetitive and definitive losses of acoustic structures). In this study, zircon U‐Pb dating of volcanic rocks from the Zhongba ophiolite of the Yarlung Zangbo Suture Zone (YZSZ) in southern Xizang (Tibet) yielded an age of 247 ± 3 Ma. According to whole rock geochemical and Sr‐Nd‐Pb isotopic data, the Early Triassic samples could be divided into two groups: Group 1 with P‐MORB affinity, showing initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios of 0.70253–0.70602, εNd(t) values of 4.2–5.3, (206Pb/204Pb)t ratios of 16.353–18.222, (207Pb/204Pb)t ratios of 15.454–15.564, and (208Pb/204Pb)t ratios of 35.665–38.136; Group 2 with OIB affinity, showing initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios of 0.70249–0.70513, εNd(t) values of 4.4–4.9, (206Pb/204Pb)t ratios of 17.140–18.328, (207Pb/204Pb)t ratios of 15.491–15.575, and (208Pb/204Pb)t ratios of 36.051–38.247. Group 2 rocks formed by partial melting of the mantle source enriched by a former plume, and assimilated continental crustal material during melt ascension. The formation of Group 1 rocks corresponds to the mixing of OIB melts, with the same components as Group 2 and N‐MORBs. The Zhongba Early Triassic rocks belong to the continental margin type ophiolite and formed in the continental–oceanic transition zone during the initial opening of the Neo‐Tethys in southern Xizang (Tibet). The Klamath Mountains in northern California and southern Oregon are thought to record 200+ m.y. of subduction and terrane accretion, whereas the outboard Franciscan Complex records ocean‐continent subduction along the North American margin. Unraveling the Klamath Mountains' Late Jurassic history could help constrain this transition in subduction style. Key is the Mesozoic Condrey Mountain Schist (CMS), comprising, in part, a subduction complex that occupies a structural window through older, overlying central Klamath thrust sheets but with otherwise uncertain relationships to more outboard Klamath or Franciscan terranes. The CMS consists of two units (upper and lower), which could be correlated with (a) other Klamath terranes, (b) the Franciscan, or (c) neither based on regional structures and limited extant age data. Upper CMS protolith and metamorphic dates overlap with other Klamath terranes, but the lower CMS remains enigmatic. We used multiple geochronometers to constrain the timing of lower CMS deposition and metamorphism. Maximum depositional ages (MDAs) derived from detrital zircon geochronology of metasedimentary rocks are 153–135 Ma. Metamorphic ages from white mica K‐Ar and Rb‐Sr multi‐mineral isochrons from intercalated and coherently deformed metamafic lenses are 133–116 Ma. Lower CMS MDAs (<153 Ma) predominantly postdate other Klamath terrane ages, but subduction metamorphism appears to start before the earliest coherent Franciscan underplating (ca. 123 Ma). The lower CMS thus occupies a spatial and temporal position between the Klamath Mountains and Franciscan and preserves a non‐retrogressed record of the Franciscan Complex's early history (>123 Ma), otherwise only partially preserved in retrogressed Franciscan high grade blocks. Enicocephalomorpha, also known as uniqueheaded bugs, are a seldom-collected infraorder of heteropteran insects whose evolutionary relationships have puzzled entomologists for more than a century. Unique-headed bugs are exceptionally rare in the fossil record, which hinders our understanding of the morphological transformations of the lineage across time and also affects the calibration of molecular clock estimates used to date the origins of the infraorder. Here, we report the discovery of Enicocephalinus ibericus sp. nov. from Iberian amber in the Ari~no deposit in Spain, early Albian (Early Cretaceous) in age. The new species represents the second oldest fossil enicocephalomorphan to date, and the second record of this infraorder from European deposits. Remarkably, the closest relative of E. ibericus is the congeneric E. acragrimaldii Azar from Lebanese amber that is c. 20 myr older (Barremian), indicating a long-term persistence of the Enicocephalinus lineage across geological time. A review of the existing literature enabled us to record a total of 20 congeneric insect species that have been found in both Lebanese and Iberian ambers, suggesting the existence of previously underappreciated entomofaunal connections between southern Laurasia (the European archipelago) and northern Gondwana during the Cretaceous. We show that the palaeoentomological record holds remarkable potential for elucidating the faunistic exchanges and palaeobiogeographical patterns in the peri-Tethyan region during the Cretaceous. The main structural building blocks that form manganese oxides are MnO6 octahedra; these share corners and edges to construct specific structures, which can either be tunneled or layered. In the layered structures, that is, phyllomanganates, the MnO6 octahedra form sheets, which, in turn, alternate with sheets of metal oxides and H2O. These metal ions can vary (Zn, Co, Ni, Al, Li, ...) and give rise to an entire range of different metal oxides. The characterization of these layered materials is important as they have various economical/industrial applications. Birnessite‐type materials, a specific type of layered manganese oxides, are widely studied for their use as cathode materials in alkali‐ion batteries. Phyllomanganates are also commonly found as constituents in sediments and soils or as coatings on rock surfaces. Their natural occurrence as black colored components have ensured that these minerals were also applied as pigments in archaeological and historical contexts. They are, for example, often found in rock art paintings and on pottery. As the oxides are used in unique archaeological objects, Raman spectroscopy is an evident choice for characterization due to its non‐destructive nature of analysis. In the current study, five mineral samples of (layered) manganese oxides are analyzed with different Raman instrumentations, including mobile systems and a benchtop micro‐Raman setup. The characterization of each selected manganese oxide and their comparison with literature data is discussed for the micro‐Raman instrumentation. In addition, the ability of identifying and characterizing layered manganese oxides and the possible challenges when using mobile instrumentation are discussed as well. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There has been no consensus yet regarding the precise initial timing and duration of the late Mesozoic extensional tectonics in the South‐eastern China Block. This work focusses on the growth strata of the Early Cretaceous red beds in the South‐eastern China Block to determine the late Mesozoic tectonics and the precise timing of the initiation and duration of extensional tectonics in this area. Field observation of several terrigenous basins shows that the dip angles of the Cretaceous red beds have varied from moderate to gentle from basin edges to interiors (or centres). The visible and estimated thickness within a single bed increases slightly downwards from the upper to the lower part. These characteristics indicate that the sedimentary area of these beds has undergone an extensional process with expansion and deepening of the sedimentary basins. Rotation of the border surfaces (limbs) and downward warping of the hanging walls or retreat of the footwalls of listric normal faults causes three types of extensional growth (or syntectonic) strata in the deposits of different basins. Dating of the volcanic rocks related to the growth beds reveals that the sedimentary basins were enlarged and deepened when the Early Cretaceous strata were deposited in the South‐eastern China Block from ca 140 to 137 Ma. Regionally, under the influence of Palaeo‐Pacific plate rollback since ca 140 Ma, the South‐eastern China Block stress field has led to lithospheric uplift and pull‐apart structures near the surface, causing the half‐graben basins to receive sedimentation. Although the extensional event was interrupted by a short compressional event during 120 to 105 Ma, with the oceanward retreat of the trench, the area of extension gradually enlarged and rejuvenated south‐eastwards until the end of the Cretaceous. Unveiling the tempo and mode of animal evolution is necessary to understand the links between environmental changes and biological innovation. Although the earliest unambiguous metazoan fossils date to the late Ediacaran period, molecular clock estimates agree that the last common ancestor (LCA) of all extant animals emerged ~850 Ma, in the Tonian period, before the oldest evidence for widespread ocean oxygenation at ~635–560 Ma in the Ediacaran period. Metazoans are aerobic organisms, that is, they are dependent on oxygen to survive. In low‐oxygen conditions, most animals have an evolutionarily conserved pathway for maintaining oxygen homeostasis that triggers physiological changes in gene expression via the hypoxia‐inducible factor (HIFa). However, here we confirm the absence of the characteristic HIFa protein domain responsible for the oxygen sensing of HIFa in sponges and ctenophores, indicating the LCA of metazoans lacked the functional protein domain as well, and so could have maintained their transcription levels unaltered under the very low‐oxygen concentrations of their environments. Using Bayesian relaxed molecular clock dating, we inferred that the ancestral gene lineage responsible for HIFa arose in the Mesoproterozoic Era, ~1273 Ma (Credibility Interval 957–1621 Ma), consistent with the idea that important genetic machinery associated with animals evolved much earlier than the LCA of animals. Our data suggest at least two duplication events in the evolutionary history of HIFa, which generated three vertebrate paralogs, products of the two successive whole‐genome duplications that occurred in the vertebrate LCA. Overall, our results support the hypothesis of a pre‐Tonian emergence of metazoans under low‐oxygen conditions, and an increase in oxygen response elements during animal evolution. Summary: Divergence times based on molecular clock analyses often differ from those derived from total‐evidence dating (TED) approaches. For bryophytes, fossils have been excluded from previous assessments of divergence times, and thus, their utility in dating analyses remains unexplored. Here, we conduct the first TED analyses of the complex thalloid liverworts (Marchantiopsida) that include fossils and evaluate macroevolutionary trends in morphological 'diversity' (disparity) and rates.Phylogenetic analyses were performed on a combined dataset of 130 discrete characters and 11 molecular markers (sampled from nuclear, plastid and mitochondrial genomes). Taxon sampling spanned 56 extant species – representing all the orders within Marchantiophyta and extant genera within Marchantiales – and eight fossil taxa.Total‐evidence dating analyses support the radiation of Marchantiopsida during Late Silurian‐Early Devonian (or Middle Ordovician when the outgroup is excluded) and that of Ricciaceae in the Middle Jurassic. Morphological change rate was high early in the history of the group, but it barely increased after Late Cretaceous. Disparity‐through‐time analyses support a fast increase in diversity until the Middle Triassic (c. 250 Ma), after which phenotypic evolution slows down considerably.Incorporating fossils in analyses challenges previous assumptions on the affinities of extinct taxa and indicates that complex thalloid liverworts radiated c. 125 Ma earlier than previously inferred. In a reconnaissance study, we investigated the potential of γ‐ray induced production of 38ArK from 39K for geochronological applications. For this purpose, various age monitors commonly in use for the established 40Ar/39Ar‐method were co‐irradiated for 60 h at 17.6 MeV maximum energy in the ELBE facility, Dresden‐Rossendorf, Germany. Because the available energy was low, total production of 38ArK was depressed, leading to low J38‐values of (2.1–4.1) × 10‐6 and hence resulted in only minor 38Ar excess when compared with atmospheric 38Ar/36Ar ratios. In spite of these restrictions, ages of younger monitors could be reproduced within error, whereas older age reference materials showed discrepancies due to the low production rate. We observed Ca‐derived contributions on 36Ar in analysed CaF2 reference materials, and calculated a limit for Ca‐interference on 38ArCa of (38Ar/36Ar)Ca = 0.07 ± 0.03 (1s). In addition, we investigated a potential recoil redistribution of 38Ar by stepwise heating experiments, but could not quantify this further because of concurring processes. More work at higher photon energies is necessary to resolve other open issues, in particular the potential of utilising 40Ar/37Ar ratios for age determination and the possibility of 42Ar production from 44Ca, which would allow correction for Ca‐interference reactions on other Ar isotopes. Aim: Were postglacial recolonizations facilitated by persistence close to the colonized areas rather than by dispersal ability allowing for colonization from distant sources? This question is particularly relevant for organisms with low active dispersal abilities and lacking specialized propagules. Here we identified glacial refugia of four Central European land snail species, including one for which a northern glacial refugium in the region was indicated by indirectly dated fossils. Location: Central Europe and the Balkans. Taxon: Pulmonate land snails: Monachoides incarnatus (Hygromiidae) and Helix pomatia, Helix thessalica and Caucasotachea vindobonensis (Helicidae). Methods: We used continuous phylogeographic analysis of mitochondrial sequence data to trace the origin of postglacially expanding lineages. We assessed the credibility of results from our focal species, M. incarnatus, by comparison to three other broadly sympatric land snail species. In addition, we performed direct radiocarbon dating of fossil shells to verify the presumed glacial presence of M. incarnatus on the territories of Czechia and Slovakia and to test the reliability of the available fossil data. Results: In three of the four species, the molecular data supported refugia located south of the Pannonian Basin, from the south‐eastern Alps to the south‐western Carpathians, but not more northerly. The direct radiocarbon dating resulted in younger dates than previously assumed. However, the molecular data also revealed unexpected, yet substantial postglacial southward expansions of M. incarnatus and C. vindobonensis into the Balkans. Main Conclusions: Neither the phylogeographic analyses nor the direct radiocarbon dating provided evidence for the glacial survival of studied land snail species in Central Europe. The refugia located adjacent to the Pannonian Basin were the most important source of postglacial expansions to Central Europe, but were also the source of the expansion southwards. The process of slab tearing profoundly affects interchanges of material and energy between the lithosphere and asthenosphere and has been invoked as a trigger of magmatism in modern and ancient subduction‐collision systems. Horizontal slab tears may occur after continental collision and subsequent slab break‐off, whereas vertical slab tears may occur in response to along‐strike variations in rollback velocity, thereby ripping the subducting lithosphere. Previous studies have documented tearing of subducting slabs in modern convergent settings using geophysical methods, but in ancient collisional belts, where these methods cannot be applied, detection of slab tearing is more difficult, particularly if the oceanic plate was fully subducted and the geological evidence for subduction is limited. Here, we employ multiproxy element‐isotope imaging, as well as zircon petrochronology and whole‐rock geochemistry, to assess evidence of vertical tearing of the Mianlue slab in the Triassic Qinling Orogen in central China. Our results show evidence of anomalous, inferred tear‐related magmatism east of 107°E, at 225–210 Ma. Vertical tearing of the northward subducting Mianlue slab is recorded by geochemically anomalous igneous rocks, and the recognition of N–S to NE–SW trending boundaries defined by Sr‐Nd‐Hf isotopes, elemental ratios (Nb/Ta, and Ca/Al), Mg#, and reduced crustal thickness between 107° and 108°E. The inferred vertical tear may have been driven by slab rollback of the Mianlue slab at 225–210 Ma. The results show that multiproxy element‐isotope imaging (e.g., of εNd(t), εHf(t), (87Sr/86Sr)i, Nb/Ta, Mg#, and Ca/Al) can be used to reconstruct the evolution of fossil subduction systems. Plain Language Summary: Subduction zones are natural factories for the circulation of material in the Earth as they allow tectonic plates to descend into the mantle. Pieces of subducting plates, normally referred to as slabs, can be torn and segmented, but reconstructing the geometry of such tears in ancient convergent plate boundary settings is difficult. Based on the observation that slab tearing can trigger anomalous magmatism in convergent plate margins, we present a multiproxy geochemical and isotopic imaging method that enables us to understand the process of slab tearing in the Qinling Orogen (China) during the Triassic. We found that igneous rocks from the Qinling Orogen, east of 107°E, are geochemically anomalous (relative to typical arc rocks). These rocks are dated 225–210 Ma. By imaging various geochemical characteristics, our results demonstrate that the subducting Mianlue slab was likely torn at longitude 107°–108°E, thereby producing geochemically and isotopically anomalous mafic and felsic magmatism. Rock art paintings are notoriously difficult to date numerically. Recently, luminescence dating has been shown to provide reliable rock surface burial ages in various archaeological settings. Here we use the cross‐cutting relationship between a fallen rock and two paintings of the Iberian Levantine (older) and Schematic (younger) styles to constrain the age of the paintings by dating the rockfall event using rock surface luminescence dating. Infrared‐stimulated luminescence (IRSL) signals as a function of depth into the buried face of the talus border indicate that the IRSL signal measured at 50°C (IR50) was sufficiently reset to a depth of about 1.6 mm prior to burial. An uncorrected IR50 age of 1.6 ± 0.2 ka was calculated for the rockfall event by dividing the surface equivalent dose (De) by the total dose rate. This age was corrected using both conventional and field‐to‐laboratory saturation approaches to yield indistinguishable ages of 2.7 ± 0.5 and 2.9 ± 0.3 ka, respectively. Since the panel with Schematic art was first available to the artist after the rockfall, we conclude the Schematic rock art at Villar del Humo is younger than ~2.9 ka. The drift history of the Lhasa terrane from Gondwana to Asia plays a crucial role in understanding the Tethys evolution and true polar wander (TPW). However, few reliable paleomagnetic results from Jurassic strata are currently available for reconstructing its northward journey. We performed a combined paleomagnetic and geochronological study on Bima Formation strata in the Xigaze area. Combined with previous results from the Sangri area, our results reveal a paleolatitude of 8 ± 4°S at ∼180 Ma for the reference point (29.3°N, 90.3°E). Along with other paleomagnetic results from the Triassic to Cretaceous, our new results suggest that the Lhasa terrane motion accelerated from ∼2 cm/yr during ∼220–180 Ma to ∼17 cm/yr during ∼180–170 Ma. Paleolatitude information of the North Qiangtang terrane and Tethyan Himalaya is calculated from paleopoles that meet five criteria, which include (a) structural control, (b) well‐determined rock age, (c) stepwise demagnetizations, (d) a minimum of 25 specimens or 8 sites are contained, and (e) robust field or reversal tests are provided. Both terranes also show significant acceleration during their northward motion, which may be related to oceanic slab subduction. Thus, all Gondwana‐derived microcontinents seem to share a significant acceleration during their northward motion. In addition, recent paleomagnetic results from volcanic rocks dated at ∼155 Ma subdivide the overall northward motion during ∼170–130 Ma into two stages, which include a southward drift during ∼170–155 Ma followed by northward motion during ∼155–130 Ma. These results support the fast Late Jurassic TPW during a ∼10 Myr time span. How these terranes moved northward from Gondwana to Asia remains unclear due to poor paleolatitude constraints. We provide paleomagnetic evidence to show that the Lhasa terrane was located at ∼8°S at ∼180 million years ago (Ma). Together with reliable paleomagnetic data from Late Triassic (∼237–201 Ma) limestones and Middle Jurassic (∼174–163 Ma) sandstones, our results suggest a significant acceleration during Lhasa's northward motion at ∼220–170 Ma. Reliable paleolatitude data show significant accelerations of the Lhasa, North Qiangtang, and Tethyan Himalaya terranes during their northward journey, which may be related to oceanic slab subduction. These significant accelerations may be a common feature of these Gondwana‐derived microcontinents. Phylogenetic relationships are often challenging to resolve in recent/younger lineages when only a few loci are used. Ultra‐conserved elements (UCEs) are highly conserved regions across taxa that help resolve shallow and deep divergences. We utilized UCEs harvested from whole genomes to assess the phylogenetic position and taxonomic affiliation of an endangered endemic owlet in the family Strigidae, the Forest Owlet Athene blewitti. The taxonomic placement of this species has been revised multiple times. A multigene study attempted to address the question but showed a discrepancy across datasets in its placement of species within the genus Athene. We assembled a dataset of 5018 nuclear UCE loci with increased taxon sampling. Forest Owlet was found to be an early split from the Athene clade but sister to other Athene, consistently across three approaches – maximum likelihood, Bayesian and the multispecies coalescence. Divergence dating using fossil calibrations suggests that the Athene lineage split from its ancestor about 7.6 mya, and Forest Owlet diverged about 5.2 mya. This estimate is consistent with previous multigene approaches and confirms the role of climate‐aridification across the Indian peninsula in species diversification. Despite osteological differences from other Athene, we suggest placement of the Forest Owlet as a member of the Athene to emphasize its evolutionary relationship. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Kimberlites are deep and relatively rare mantle‐derived igneous rocks, which provide key insights into the lithospheric mantle composition beneath continents (i.e., from the entrained mantle materials) at the time of magma emplacement. In addition, the temporal distribution of kimberlites throughout Earth's history may reveal secular changes in global geodynamics. However, alteration and abundant exotic material (i.e., xenoliths and xenocrysts) of different ages, both typical of kimberlites, often hinder reliable dating of these rocks. In this study, we investigated zircon xenocrysts and their replacement by desilicification reaction rims (DSRs), which consist mainly of baddeleyite, in the metamorphosed Kimozero kimberlites from the Karelian Craton, Russia. Similar DSRs have been identified previously on mantle‐derived zircons in numerous kimberlites, but the precise timing and location of formation of these rims remain unclear. U–Pb isotope dating of mantle zircon xenocrysts in the Kimozero kimberlites indicates that these rocks were emplaced at ca. 1.97 Ga. DSRs with similar textures and baddeleyite chemistry occur on both the 1.97 Ga mantle and 2.70–2.38 Ga crustal zircon xenocrysts in these kimberlites. Pb–Pb isotope dating of the DSRs yields the same age (i.e., ca. 1.97 Ga) as the mantle zircons. The data constrain the formation of DSRs to crustal levels and, more importantly, indicate that these rims record the timing of kimberlite emplacement. Therefore, we suggest that such baddeleyite reaction rims are a new and promising material for kimberlite geochronology. The deep‐seated spontaneous coal‐seam fire occurred in the southwestern part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (S Poland), confirmed by oxygenated compounds emission to over‐ and underlying rocks. The fire was dated at 19.2–19.8 Ma using the 39Ar‐40Ar method and palaeomagnetism. It was initiated in the Carpathian foreland thanks to a normal faulting in response to thrust‐loaded deflections of the Carpathian foreland lithosphere during collision of tectonic plates (Alcapa and stable Europe). The orogenic loading caused this normal faulting in the foreland and triggering the flexural mechanism of foredeep subsidence and forebulge uplift. Thanks to the dating of rocks affected by the spontaneous coal fire initiated during the rapid uplift of coal‐bearing rocks, when they became exposed to the aeration zone, the age of these mountain‐building processes in the Carpathians has been precisely defined. Barklice are insects belonging to the order Psocodea. They are herbivorous or detritivorous, and inhabit a wide range of environments. Their oldest fossil record dates back to the late Carboniferous, but it was not until the Cretaceous that they became much more diverse. However, their fossil record could be affected by taphonomic processes due to their tiny size and soft bodies. Here, we present new psocid specimens from five amber‐bearing outcrops in Spain that are Albian in age. One of the specimens, a well‐preserved psocid nymph assigned to †Archaeatropidae, lacks evidence of debris‐carrying behaviour. Some of the specimens belong to the previously known species Archaeatropos alavensis Baz & Ortuño and Preempheria antiqua Baz & Ortuño (Trogiomorpha: Atropetae), providing new anatomical and biogeographical information. Furthermore, we describe a new species, Libanoglaris hespericus sp. nov. (†Archaeatropidae). The diagnosis for the family †Archaeatropidae is emended. The abundance of psocids in Cretaceous amber and their virtual absence in compression outcrops could be due to taphonomic bias. Considerations on the phylogenetic placement of trogiomorphan families and the relationships between †Archaeatropidae and †Empheriidae are included. Today, the least diverse psocid suborder is Trogiomorpha, but this suborder comprises the majority of the Cretaceous psocodean species described to date, possibly due to palaeobiological or evolutionary constraints. Trogiomorphans could have been relegated to marginal habitats by niche competition with psocomorphans. Debris‐carrying behaviour in response to predatory pressure might not have been widely distributed, geographically or phylogenetically, in the Cretaceous psocid nymphs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Guide Basin, located in the West Qinling orogen of central China, is a typical geothermal field. However, the granodiorites occurring in the Zhacanggou area have been poorly restricted. Herein, we report new isotopic compositions of whole‐rock major‐trace elements, zircon U–Pb, and Lu–Hf, on the host granodiorites and their microgranular enclaves (MEs) in the Zhacanggou area. Zircon U–Pb dating for the host rocks (porphyritic granodiorite and granodiorite) revealed ages of 230.5 ± 1.4 Ma and 229.0 ± 1.6 Ma, similar to those (230.5 ± 1.5 Ma and 231.4 ± 1.4 Ma) of the MEs. Zircon Hf isotope analyses for the granodiorite and MEs yielded εHf(t) values from −11.0 to −1.5 and from −7.8 to −0.7, with corresponding TDM2 ages of 1,355–1,959 and 1,304–1,755, respectively. The MEs possess plagioclase phenocrysts, acicular apatites, and chilled borders. They were characterized by relatively low SiO2 (58.39–65.24 wt%) and high Cr, Ni, and MgO contents, leading to relatively high Mg# values (44–59) and low Sr/Y (14.23–19.84) ratios. The host granodioritic rocks show similar adakitic geochemical characteristics with SiO2 = 64.23–68.57 wt%, MgO = 1.29–2.22 wt%, Mg# = 48–53, Sr = 340–596 ppm, Y = 11.3–13.7 ppm, Sr/Y = 28.39–47.89, and no obvious Eu anomalies. These geochemical and isotopic data, combined with the mineralogical features, indicate that the granodiorites in the Zhacanggou area were produced by the mixing of high‐Mg# melts originating from an enriched lithospheric mantle source, and felsic magmas deriving by the partial melting of the normal lower continental crust with the tectonic regime transition from a syn‐collision to a post‐collision setting. Summary: Lycopodiaceae are one of three surviving families of lycopsids, a lineage of vascular plants with a fossil history dating to at least the Early Devonian or perhaps the Late Silurian (c. 415 Ma). Many fossils have been linked to crown Lycopodiaceae, but the lack of well‐preserved material has hindered definitive recognition of this group in the paleobotanical record.New, exceptionally well‐preserved permineralized lycopsid fossils from the Early Cretaceous (125.6 ± 1.0 Ma) of Inner Mongolia, China, were examined in detail using acetate peel and micro‐computed tomography techniques. The anatomy of extant Lycopodiaceae was analyzed for comparison using fluorescence microscopy. Informal learning environments such as Natural History Museums can introduce visitors to a variety of topics in evolution by providing accessible representations of concepts like geological time, evolutionary mechanisms, biological diversity, geological time, and fossil dating. Our study examined sixth‐grade students' conceptualization of evolutionary ideas following four extracurricular, evolution‐themed "Science Days" at Nature Campus—an informal learning environment that employs an extensive combination of resources, including fossils, mounted specimens, and labs, as well as zoological and botanical gardens. The purpose of this study was to identify changes in the students' personal constructs over time, in order to determine which aspects of what they had learned during the Science Days had been retained. I, therefore, conducted two sets of interviews, which employed Kelly's Repertory Grid technique to elicit "personal constructs" representing these students' perceptions of evolution and the concepts and ideas associated with it. The first round of interviews was held immediately after the program's conclusion, and the second was conducted 3 years later (ninth‐grade). I then compared the results of the two sets of interviews. Our results showed that multiple elements of the Nature Campus learning experience were retained by the students, emphasizing the contribution of its characteristics as an authentic learning environment that uses visualization, tactile, physical examples, and interactive, inquiry‐based activities to promote meaningful learning. They also showed changes in the prominence and complexity of certain constructs that reflect the nature of the relationship between what the students learned in the informal environment of the Nature Campus and what they have since been taught (or not been taught) in the formal environment of their school. Welwitschia mirabilis, which is endemic to the Namib Desert, is the only living species within the family Welwitschiaceae. This species has an extremely long lifespan of up to 2,000 years and bears a single pair of opposite leaves that persist whilst alive. However, the underlying genetic mechanisms and evolution of the species remain poorly elucidated. Here, we report on a chromosome‐level genome assembly for W. mirabilis, with a 6.30‐Gb genome sequence and contig N50 of 27.50 Mb. In total, 39,019 protein‐coding genes were predicted from the genome. Two brassinosteroid‐related genes (BRI1 and CYCD3), key regulators of cell division and elongation, were strongly selected in W. mirabilis and may contribute to their long ever‐growing leaves. Furthermore, 29 gene families in the mitogen‐activated protein kinase signalling pathway showed significant expansion, which may contribute to the desert adaptations of the plant. Three positively selected genes (EHMT1, EIF4E, SOD2) may be involved in the mechanisms leading to long lifespan. Based on molecular clock dating and fossil calibrations, the divergence time of W. mirabilis and Gnetum montanum was estimated at ~123.5 million years ago. Reconstruction of population dynamics from genome data coincided well with the aridification of the Namib Desert. The genome sequence detailed in the current study provides insight into the evolution of W. mirabilis and should be an important resource for further study on gnetophyte and gymnosperm evolution. The extant pig‐nosed turtle (Carettochelys insculpta), persisting in far northern Australia and southern New Guinea, is the last surviving member of Carettochelyidae and the only non‐Gondwanan freshwater turtle lineage in Australia. Despite having a global fossil record dating to the Cretaceous, the absence of carettochelyid fossils from Australia has implied a relatively recent colonization of this landmass. Here we report an upper Miocene to lower Pliocene carettochelyid fossil from Beaumaris, Victoria, in south‐eastern Australia. This record is the most southerly occurrence of the clade Carettochelyidae. The presence of carettochelyids in southern Australia, and a discontinuous record of trionychids (soft‐shell turtles) in the Cenozoic of Queensland, suggests at least two colonizations of Australia by Trionychia, pre‐dating the extant pig‐nosed turtle. This cryptic southern history of tropical soft‐shell and pig‐nosed turtles ended before the recent aridification of Australia, leaving the Gondwanan side‐necked turtles as the dominant turtle group in Australian freshwater ecosystems. Eocene strata of the Elko Formation record lacustrine deposition within the Nevada hinterland of the North American Cordillera. We present a detailed geochemical stratigraphy enabled by high‐sampling‐resolution geochronology from lacus trine limestone and interbedded volcanic rocks of the Elko Formation. Two intervals of lacustrine deposition, an early Eocene "Lake Adobe" of limited aerial extent and a laterally extensive middle Eocene "Lake Elko," are separated by ∼5 m.y. of apparent unconformity. Sediments deposited in the apparently short‐lived (49.5–48.5 Ma) early Eocene Lake Adobe exhibit high‐amplitude covariation of δ18O, δ13C and 87Sr/86Sr, which suggests a dynamically changing catchment and precipitation regime. Lake Elko formed during the middle Eocene, and its strata record three geochemically distinct phases, indicating it was a single interconnected water body that became increasingly evaporative over time. The lower Elko Formation (44.0–42.5 Ma) was deposited in a freshwater lake. Middle Elko Formation (42.5–41.2 Ma) lithofacies and geochemistry suggest that an increasingly saline and alkaline Lake Elko experienced salinity stratification‐induced hypolimnion disoxia and burial of 12C‐rich organic matter. The upper Elko Formation (41.2–40.5 Ma) records a shallow final phase of Lake Elko that experienced short residence times and a breakdown in stratification. A sharp decline of 87Sr/86Sr in the upper Elko Formation reflects an increasing aerial extent of low‐87Sr/86Sr volcanic deposits from nearby calderas. Middle Eocene strata record ponding of paleodrainage, increasing hydrologic isolation and volcanism, consistent with progressive north to south removal of the Farallon flat slab and/or delamination of the lower lithospheric mantle of the North American plate. Plain Language Summary: Large lakes formed in the region that is now northeast Nevada between 50 and 40 million years ago. This region was at high elevation and undergoing a transition from compressional to extensional plate tectonic forces at that time. Temporary lentic water bodies host biotic assemblages adapted to the transient nature of these freshwater habitats. Fairy shrimps (Crustacea, Branchiopoda, Anostraca) are one of the most important biological components of these unique environments and have a fossil record dating back to the Middle Jurassic (>150 million years).Some anostracan species show a geographically restricted distribution, whereas others are widely dispersed. We aimed to investigate the relationship between different geographic extents and patterns of genetic structure in species of Anostraca. Following this objective, we selected two species with contrasting ranges but overlapping geographic distributions and similar life‐history traits in the study area. We analysed additional information that, from an ecological (e.g. egg‐bank, niche breadth, and pond connectivity) and evolutionary (e.g. crown‐group age of each species) perspective, may explain the obtained phylogeographic patterns.Between 2005 and 2018, we sampled two species of fairy shrimps (309 specimens of Branchipus cortesi and 264 specimens of Tanymastix stagnalis) from 53 temporary ponds of Portugal. We added five other locations from Spain and France to include other European locations for T. stagnalis. Additionally, we also sampled Branchipus schaefferi from two temporary water bodies (Spain and Morocco) to include in the dating analysis.Reconstructed phylogenies based on mitochondrial sequence data indicate the existence of deeply divergent clades with an unequivocal phylogeographic structure in T. stagnalis and shallower divergences in B. cortesi with a less clear geographic correspondence. We found evidence of frequent local and rare long‐distance dispersal events in both species and limited intermediate dispersal, which was more common in B. cortesi. A Bayesian dating analysis using the Branchiopoda fossil record estimated the age of the most recent common ancestors of T. stagnalis and B. cortesi at 32.4 and 12.8 million years, respectively.Haplotype accumulation curves indicated that only a portion of the genetic composition of the species was sampled on each hydroperiod and showed the existence of large, genetically diverse egg banks that remain in the soil. These egg banks represent a genetic reservoir that guarantees the survival of the species because active populations from different hydroperiods may be genetically different and adapt to a changing environment.We hypothesise that the contrasting phylogeographic patterns displayed by the two fairy shrimp species may result from: (1) the earlier age of the most recent common ancestor of T. stagnalis, as older species have more time to accumulate mutations and, thus, are expected to exhibit higher genetic differentiation among populations; (2) slight differences in adult behaviour, life‐history traits and cyst morphologies of T. stagnalis and B. cortesi favouring different animal dispersal vectors with distinct dispersal abilities. There has been much debate over the decades amongst Cuban archaeologists about what group or groups may have created the rock art in the karst caves of Cuba. The complexities of Cuba's history made dating rock paintings an attractive method for determining their origins. Samples were collected from three caves in Mayabeque province, collectively referred to as Las Charcas. Chemical analyses were carried out along with plasma–chemical oxidation and accelerator mass spectrometric radiocarbon dating. The paintings in two caves contained bitumen, resulting in anomalously old dates, whilst the other cave's amorphous carbon‐based paintings fit within a pre‐Columbian context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The investigation of a limestone cave on the Ryonggok‐ri of Sangwon County, North Hwanghae Province, DPRK, has yielded many faunal remains including Late Pleistocene deer, brown bears and horses. Uranium series dating of fossil teeth yielded dates of ~72ka at the base of Layer 2 – the bone‐bearing unit – and ~44ka at the top. The rich and diverse mammal remains of Ryonggok Cave No. 1 are indicative of warm and humid temperate conditions during the Late Pleistocene, and reflect the presence of both dense forests and open grassland. In addition, pollen and spores from the site include two families and 24 genera of trees, six families and a genus of grasses and herbs, and two families and six genera of ferns, corroborating the environments inferred from the faunal remains. Carex section Phacocystis (Cyperaceae) is one of the most diverse and taxonomically complex groups of sedges (between 116 and 147 species), with a worldwide distribution in a wide array of biomes. It has a very complicated taxonomic history, with numerous disagreements among different treatments. We studied the biogeography and niche evolution in a phylogenetic framework to unveil the relative contribution of geographical and ecological drivers to diversification of the group. We used a large species sampling of the section (82% of extant species) to build a phylogeny based on four DNA regions, constrained with a phylogenomic HybSeq tree and dated with six fossil calibrations. Our phylogenetic results recovered section Phacocystis s.s. (core Phacocystis) as sister to section Praelongae. Ancestral area reconstruction points toward the N Pacific as the cradle for the crown diversification of section Phacocystis during the Middle Miocene. Wide distributions were recurrently inferred across deep nodes. Large Northern Hemisphere lineages with geographical congruence were retrieved, pointing toward the importance of allopatric divergence at deep phylogenetic levels, whereas within‐area speciation emerges as the predominant pattern at shallow phylogenetic level. The Southern Hemisphere (Neotropics, SW Pacific) was colonized several times from the Northern Hemisphere. The global expansion of Carex section Phacocystis did not entail major ecological changes along the inner branches of the phylogeny. The Bengge biotite aegirine‐augite syenite (BAS) is located in the southern part of Yidun Arc, eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau area. It is an integral part of the Bengge ultrapotassic rocks (UPR), an alkalic complex mainly consisting of BAS, biotite pyroxene syenite (BPS), and biotite syenite (BS). Geochronological studies including zircon LA‐ICPMS U–Pb dating and biotite 40Ar/39Ar dating have been conducted on the Bengge BAS to constrain its emplacement age. The zircon U–Pb dating yields a wide range of ages from 209 ± 2 Ma to 239 ± 2 Ma, with the concordia 206Pb/238U age being 228 ± 8.9 Ma (MSWD = 0.13). Meanwhile, the biotite 40Ar/39Ar dating yields a plateau age of 205.7 ± 1.5 Ma. The whole‐rock Zr‐saturation temperature (Tzir‐sat) of the Bengge BAS has shown to be very low (86 ± 13°C to 634 ± 13°C), which is much lower than Ti‐in‐zircon temperature (>758°C) of the zircons used for U–Pb dating. This indicates that the zircons in the Bengge BAS are inherited, and they were already present in the BAS melts before the melts became Zr‐saturated. Similarly, the Tzir‐sat of the Bengge BPS and BS are 346 ± 14°C ~ 549 ± 13°C and 281 ± 14°C ~ 525 ± 13°C, respectively, which is also too low for magmatic zircon crystallization in the melts. The inherited zircons of Bengge BAS have typical features of magmatic zircon, with high (Sm/La)N ratios (2.54–819), Ce/Ce* ratios (4.77–304) and low La concentration. Low εHf (T) values (−5.0 to 0.42) and high U/Yb (0.67–12.6) values imply that the inherited zircons (209–239 Ma) in the Benge BAS are derived from an early arc‐magma system of the Yidun Arc. The biotite 40Ar/39Ar dating constrains the Bengge BAS emplacement age at 205.7 ± 1.5 Ma, the time when the arc‐magma activity had ceased, and a regional geodynamic transition in the Yidun Arc from convergence to back‐arc spreading had started. The volcanic island of Jan Mayen, remotely located in the Norwegian‐Greenland Sea, was covered by a contiguous ice cap during the Late Weichselian. Until now, it has been disputed whether parts of the island south of the presently glaciated Mount Beerenberg area were ever glaciated. Based on extensive field mapping we demonstrate that an ice cap covered all land areas and likely also extended onto the shallow shelf areas southeast and east of the island. Chronological interpretations are based on K‐Ar and 40Ar/39Ar dating of volcanic rocks, cosmogenic nuclide (36Cl) surface exposure dating of bedrock and glacial erratics, and radiocarbon dating. We argue that ice growth started after 34 ka and that an initial deglaciation started some 21.5–19.5 ka in the southern and middle parts of the island. In the northern parts, closer to the present glaciers, the deglaciation might have started later, as evidenced by the establishment of vegetation 17–16 cal. ka BP. During full glaciation, the ice cap was likely thickest over the southern part of the island. This may explain a seemingly delayed deglaciation compared with the northern parts despite earlier initial deglaciation. In a broader context, the new knowledge of the Late Weichselian of the island contributes to the understanding of glaciations surrounding the North Atlantic and its climate history. The phrase "Darwin's abominable mystery" is frequently used with reference to a range of outstanding questions about the evolution of the plant group today known as the angiosperms. Here, I seek to more fully understand what prompted Darwin to coin the phrase in 1879, and the meaning he attached to it, by surveying the systematics, paleobotanical records, and phylogenetic hypotheses of his time. In the light of this historical research, I argue that Darwin was referring to the origin only of a subset of what are today called angiosperms: a (now obsolete) group equivalent to the "dicotyledons" of the Hooker and Bentham system. To Darwin and his contemporaries, the dicotyledons' fossil record began abruptly and with great diversity in the Cretaceous, whereas the gymnosperms and monocotyledons were thought to have fossil records dating back to the Carboniferous or beyond. Based on their morphology, the dicotyledons were widely seen by botanists in Darwin's time (unlike today) as more similar to the gymnosperms than to the monocotyledons. Thus, morphology seemed to point to gymnosperm progenitors of dicotyledons, but this hypothesis made the monocotyledons, given their (at the time) apparently longer fossil record, difficult to place. Darwin had friendly disagreements about the mystery of the dicotyledons' abrupt appearance in the fossil record with others who thought that their evolution must have been more rapid than his own gradualism would allow. But the mystery may have been made "abominable" to him because it was seen by some contemporary paleobotanists, most notably William Carruthers, the Keeper of Botany at the British Museum, as evidence for divine intervention in the history of life. Subsequent developments in plant systematics and paleobotany after 1879 meant that Darwin's letter was widely understood to be referring to the abrupt appearance of all angiosperms when it was published in 1903, a meaning that has been attached to it ever since. We are developing an in situ, rock‐dating spectrometer for spaceflight called the Chemistry, Organics, and Dating EXperiment (CODEX). CODEX will measure Rb‐Sr compositions and determine ages of samples on the Moon or Mars and can be augmented to obtain Pb‐Pb ages. Coupling Rb‐Sr and Pb‐Pb measurements broadens the suite of samples that can be dated and could provide tests of concordance. Here we assess whether geochronologically meaningful Pb‐Pb data could be measured in situ by tuning the prototype CODEX to acquire Pb‐Pb data from a suite of well‐characterized specimens from the Earth, Moon, and Mars. For Keuhl Lake Zircon 91500 our 207Pb/206Pb age of 1,090 ± 40 Ma is indistinguishable from the accepted age. In each of the Martian meteorites we studied, we could not resolve more than a single component of Pb and could not uniquely determine ages; nevertheless, our isotopic measurements were consistent with most previous analyses. On the other hand, we uniquely determined ages for three lunar meteorites. Our age for MIL 05035 is 3,550 ± 170 Ma, within 2σ of published ages for this specimen, in spite of it having <1 ppm Pb. LAP 02205 was contaminated by terrestrial Pb, but by filtering our data to exclude the most contaminated spots, we obtained an age of 3,010 ± 70 Ma, coincident with published values. Finally, our age for NWA 032 is nearly 1,000 Ma older than its age determined from other isotopic systems and is supported by additional Pb measurements made after chemical leaching. Plain Language Summary: To better understand outstanding questions of solar system chronology, such as the duration of heavy meteoroid bombardment or how long Mars was potentially habitable, we are testing a prototype spaceflight instrument for dating rocks on planetary surfaces. In our earlier work, we used our prototype to measure samples' isotopic abundances of rubidium and strontium, from which we calculate their ages from the known rate of radioactive decay of rubidium‐87 (Anderson et al., 2015a, 2015b, https://doi.org/10.1002/rcm.7095; https://doi.org/10.1002/rcm.7253; Anderson, Levine, et al., 2020, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.pss.2020.105007). In this experiment, we tuned the instrument to analyze isotopes of lead, which are produced at known rates by the radioactive decay of uranium. We examined samples from the Earth, Moon, and Mars. Our measurements on these samples successfully reproduced previous results made by laboratory instruments and yielded a new age for a lunar meteorite that had not before been dated by the lead‐lead method. This experiment raises the prospect of equipping a future lander mission to the Moon or Mars with a single dating instrument capable of exploiting two complementary isotopic systems, the data from which would permit consistency checks and afford us a more nuanced understanding of planetary history. Aim: To determine the effects of competition and divergence time on morphological dissimilarity and geographical range overlap between dasyurid species at both regional and local scales. Our hypothesis is that speciation in this group has been largely allopatric at regional scale, but involved morphological divergence at local scale through sympatric character displacement. Location: Australia, New Guinea and surrounding islands. Taxon: Dasyurid (Dasyuridae) marsupials, 67 species. Methods: Geographical range overlap was quantified using polygons representing the outer limits of species distributions. Local‐scale range overlap was quantified as the degree of co‐occurrence of two taxa across a set of ecological survey plots representing 83 sampled communities. Phylogenies were generated using a novel DNA dataset, with divergence times estimated via total‐evidence dating incorporating fossils. Morphological divergence was determined using body mass and lower molar row length as proxy traits for reconstructing niche exploitation. Results: Sister species pairs were found to be sympatric in 52% (11/21) of cases. Range overlap tended to increase with node age, which supports the hypothesis that mammalian speciation is routinely allopatric. We detected no evidence of character displacement with increasing range overlap between sister species pairs. However, a negative relationship was observed between morphological divergence in body mass and range overlap across all sampled taxa, suggesting that selection in sympatry is convergent, while divergent selection occurs in allopatry. Local‐scale co‐occurrences revealed no trace of species aversion, indicating that competition has not impacted on the spatial distribution of dasyurids. Main conclusions: Despite moderate levels of sympatry through time, our results evince low rates of spatial co‐occurrence between dasyurid species. Although this may be indicative competitive exclusion, the lack of character displacement suggests that biotic interactions have likely not acted as a dominant driver of phenotypic evolution in this radiation. We alternatively posit that abiotic factors including aridity and geographical connectivity have more feasibly propagated character convergence, and led to both niche conservatism and speciation in this ubiquitous australidelphian clade. Constraining the duration of magmatic activity on the Moon is essential to understand how the lunar mantle evolved chemically through time. Determining age and initial isotopic compositions of mafic lunar meteorites is a critical step in defining the periods of magmatic activity that occurred during the history of the Moon and to constrain the chemical characteristics of mantle components involved in the sources of the magmas. We have used the in situ Pb‐Pb SIMS technique to investigate eight lunar gabbros and basalts, including six meteorites from the Northwest Africa (NWA) 773 clan (NWA 2727, NWA 2700, NWA 3333, NWA 2977, NWA 773, and NWA 3170), NWA 4734, and Dhofar 287A. These samples have been selected as there is no clear agreement on their age and they are all from the dominant low titanium chemical group. We have obtained ages of 2981 ± 12 Ma for NWA 4734 and 3208 ± 22 Ma for Dhofar 287. For the NWA 773 clan, four samples (the fine‐grained basalt NWA 2727 and the three gabbros NWA 773, NWA 2977, NWA 3170) out of six yielded isochron‐calculated ages that are identical within uncertainties and yielding an average age of 3086 ± 5 Ma. The age obtained for the fine‐grained basalt NWA 2700 is not precise enough for comparison with the other samples. The gabbroic sample NWA 3333 yielded an age of 3038 ± 20 Ma suggesting that two distinct magmatic events may be recorded in the meteorites of the NWA 773 clan. The present study aims to identify and assess all potential issues that are associated with different ways to date lunar rocks using U‐Pb–based methods. To achieve this, we have compared the new ages with the previously published data set. The entire age data set from lunar mafic meteorites was also screened to identify data showing analytical issues and evidence of resetting and terrestrial contamination. The data set combining the ages of mafic lunar meteorites and Apollo rocks suggests pulses of magmatic activity with two distinct phases between 3950 and 3575 Ma and between 3375 and 3075 Ma with the two phases separated by a gap of approximately 200 Ma. The evolution of the Pb initial ratios of the low‐Ti mare basalts between approximately 3400 and 3100 Ma suggests that these rocks were progressively contaminated by a KREEP‐like component. The Lengshuikeng Ag‐Pb‐Zn ore field is located in the North Wuyi Mesozoic volcanic belt south of the Qinzhou–Hangzhou suture zone between the Yangtze and Cathaysia paleo‐plates. Previous zircon U–Pb geochronological studies on ignimbrites and tuffs from this area have yielded conflicting ages of 157–161 Ma (Early Upper Jurassic) and 137–144 Ma (Early Lower Cretaceous). Volcanic rocks in the ore field have even been proposed to include both ages. Our SHRIMP zircon U–Pb dating of the ignimbrite and tuff samples from the ore field, along with field observations and results from geochronological work on other volcanic and sub‐volcanic rocks in the region, shows that two populations of magmatic zircons, one autocrystic and the other xenocrystic, are present in the pyroclastic rocks. The autocrystic zircons have ages suggesting formation/eruption at approximately 140 Ma, whereas the xenocrystic zircons give ages of 155–159 Ma, indicating intrusion of granitic porphyries in the Early Upper Jurassic. Therefore, the pyroclastic rocks in the Lengshuikeng Ag–Pb–Zn ore field formed in the Early Lower Cretaceous. The youngest zircon U–Pb ages from pyroclastic rocks may not represent the formation/eruption ages of the host rock, depending most likely on the existence and/or abundance of juvenile or vitric pyroclasts in the rocks. The tectonic setting of the northern Tarim Craton during the Palaeozoic is vital to our understanding of the subduction polarity of the paleo‐oceanic plates in the Tianshan Orogen and the accretion history of the south‐western Central Asian Orogenic Belt. We first identified granitoids intruding the Palaeoproterozoic metamorphic rocks in the Kurchu area in the northern Tarim Craton. The zircon LA‐ICP‐MS U–Pb dating of this rock indicates that its crystallization age is 418 Ma, highlighting a late Early Palaeozoic magmatic event. Compared with the contemporaneous granitoids in the southern margin of the Tarim Craton, the Kurchu granitoid has high K2O (6.17–7.25 wt.%) and high alkaline (Na2O + K2O = 9.48–10.56 wt.%) contents. The Rittmann index (σ) ranges from 3.53 to 5.68, and samples plot in the shoshonite series in the K2O–SiO2 diagram, indicating that the rock is a potassic‐alkaline granite (PAG). In addition, this granitoid shows high REE concentrations (264–817 ppm) with significant Eu anomalies and is depleted in Ba, Sr, Nb, Ta, Ti, and P but enriched in Zr and Hf. These geochemical characteristics and high (87Sr/86Sr)i (0.70857–0.70995) and low εNd(T) (−10.67 to −10.24) values of the Kurchu PAG indicate that this rock was derived from the partial melting of the crust. The diagenetic conditions of the Kurchu PAG are high temperatures, as recorded by higher zircon saturation temperatures (855–919°C), low diagenetic pressure, a less shallow emplacement depth recorded by lower Sr (<200 ppm) concentrations, and a low oxygen fugacity recorded by lower Eu* (0.17–0.89), higher Zr (>355 ppm) and Hf (>9.73 ppm) concentrations, and trace element contents of zircons. In various discrimination diagrams, all samples consistently plot in rift‐related areas. These geochemical and diagenetic features suggest that this magmatic event probably occurred in a back‐arc environment. Therefore, there is back‐arc basin occurring in the northern Tarim Craton in the Early Palaeozoic, which provides strong evidence that this region was an active margin probably much earlier than Silurian, necessitating the southward subduction of the South Tianshan Ocean. SIMS U‐Pb zircon dating of metaigneous rocks of the Nordbreen Nappe from the West Ny‐Friesland terrane (Eastern Basement Province of Svalbard) yields crystallization ages of 1,761 ± 4 Ma for a felsic metatuff and 1,373 ± 4 Ma for a metagabbro dyke. The Palaeoproterozoic age of the metatuff is similar to previously obtained ages for various felsic rocks from the study area, whereas the Mesoproterozoic age of the metagabbro has not been thus far documented on Svalbard. However, a similar age pattern has been reported from Northeast Greenland. Therefore, we conclude that the West Ny‐Friesland terrane can be correlated with age equivalent units of Northeast Greenland. We also explore similarities and dissimilarities between the study area and other terranes of Svalbard and speculate on regional‐scale correlations. Together, the presented new ages provide critical piercing points in palaeogeographic reconstructions of the relatively poorly understood circum‐Arctic region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Order Diplobathrida is a major clade of camerate crinoids spanning the Ordovician–Mississippian, yet phylogenetic relationships have only been inferred for Ordovician taxa. This has hampered efforts to construct a comprehensive tree of life for crinoids and develop a classification scheme that adequately reflects diplobathrid evolutionary history. Here, I apply maximum parsimony and Bayesian phylogenetic approaches to the fossil record of diplobathrids to infer the largest tree of fossil crinoids to date, with over 100 genera included. Recovered trees provide a framework for evaluating the current classification of diplobathrids. Notably, previous suborder divisions are not supported, and superfamily divisions will require significant modification. Although numerous revisions are required for families, most can be retained through reassignment of genera. In addition, recovered trees were used to produce phylogeny‐based estimates of diplobathrid lineage diversity. By accounting for ghost lineages, phylogeny‐based richness estimates offer greater insight into diversification and extinction dynamics than traditional taxonomy‐based approaches alone and provide a detailed summary of the ~150 million‐year evolutionary history of Diplobathrida. This study constitutes a major step toward producing a phylogeny of the Crinoidea and documenting crinoid diversity dynamics. Aim: We investigated whether the fossil‐rich and cosmopolitan buckthorn family (Rhamnaceae, dating back to the Cretaceous) was influenced by vicariance events following the Gondwanan breakup. To answer this question, we focused on the ziziphoid lineage of the buckthorn family, because extant ziziphoid taxa comprise tribes and genera exclusively or at least predominantly distributed in the Southern Hemisphere (Australia, Africa, and South America). Location: World‐wide. Methods: We generated a DNA alignment of 26,989 bp (from plastid, mitochondrial, and nuclear genomes), comprising 575 taxa of Rhamnaceae and related families, including all major lineages within Rhamnaceae and closely related families. We used nine internal fossils to set constraints in our molecular dating analyses. We used 'BioGeoBEARS' in R to reconstruct ancestral areas in order to infer the impact of vicariance events on the ziziphoids caused by Gondwanan fragmentation. Results: Our biogeographic analyses illustrate that the ziziphoid lineage was influenced by both long‐distance dispersal and Gondwanan breakup vicariance events. Yet, these vicariance events cannot explain all divergence events at the backbone of this lineage. Main conclusions: Our study highlights that a taxon's distribution throughout the Northern Hemisphere can be the result of vicariance, but this process may be obliterated by more recent long‐distance dispersal (LDD). Our study also highlights that sufficiently old taxa may sometimes constitute better models to investigate the impact of Gondwanan‐driven vicariance than taxa with a current disjunct distribution in the Southern Hemisphere. Abstract: Petrological modelling of granulite‐facies mafic and semipelitic migmatites from Cairn Leuchan, northeast Scotland, has provided new constraints on the pressure (P) and temperature (T) conditions of high‐grade metamorphism in the type‐locality Barrow zones. Phase diagrams constructed in the Na2O–CaO–K2O–FeO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–H2O–TiO2–O2 system have constrained the P−T conditions of peak metamorphism in the Glen Muick region of the upper sillimanite zone (Sill+Kfs) to have been at least ∼840°C at ∼9 kbar (high‐P granulite facies). These conditions are ∼120°C and ∼3 kbar higher than those recorded by lower sillimanite zone (Sill+Ms) units located only a few kilometres away to the southeast at Glen Girnock, indicating the presence of a significant thermal and barometric high exposed within the Scottish Dalradian, and supporting previous suppositions of a potential tectonic break between the two regions. U–Pb zircon geochronology performed on these mafic migmatites produced ages of c. 540–470 Ma from grains with both igneous and metamorphic morphological characteristics. Their basaltic protoliths likely formed during a period of volcanism dated at c. 570 Ma, associated with passive‐margin extension prior to the onset of Iapetus Ocean closure, and high‐grade metamorphism and partial melting is interpreted to have taken place at c. 470 Ma, synchronous with sillimanite‐grade metamorphism recorded elsewhere in the Dalradian. These high‐grade Cairn Leuchan lithologies are interpreted as representing a fragment of Grampian Terrane lower crust that was exhumed via displacement along a steeply dipping tectonic discontinuity related to the Portsoy–Duchray Hill Lineament, and are not pre‐Caledonian Mesoproterozoic basement, as suggested by some previous studies. Veins within some mafic migmatites in the Cairn Leuchan area, composed almost entirely (>80%) of garnet, with minor quartz, plagioclase, amphibole, and clinopyroxene, are interconnected with leucosomes and are interpreted to represent former garnet‐bearing melt segregations that have been locally drained of almost all melt. Thus, mafic components of the lower crust, currently underlying relatively lower grade metasediments exposed to the southeast, may represent a potential source rock for widely documented, post‐orogenic felsic plutons, sills, and dykes that occur throughout the Grampian Terrane. Abstract: This study presents Lu–Hf geochronology of zoned garnet in high‐P eclogites from the North Qilian orogenic belt. Selected samples have ~mm‐sized garnet grains that have been sampled with a micro‐drill and analysed for dating. The Lu–Hf dates of bulk garnet separates, micro‐drilled garnet cores and the remnant, rim‐enriched garnet were determined by two‐point isochrons, with cores being consistently older than the bulk‐ and rim‐enriched garnet. The bulk garnet separates of each sample define identical garnet–whole rock isochron date of c. 457 Ma. Consistent U–Pb zircon dates of 455 ± 8 Ma were obtained from the eclogite. The Lu–Hf dates of the drilled cores and rim‐rich separates suggest a minimum garnet growth interval of 468.9 ± 2.4 and 452.1 ± 1.6 Ma. Major and Lu element profiles in the majority of garnet grains show well‐preserved Rayleigh‐style fractionated bell‐shaped Mn and Lu zoning profiles, and increasing Mg from core to rim. Pseudosection modelling indicates that garnet grew along a P–T path from ~470–525°C and ~2.4–2.6 GPa. The exceptional high‐Mn garnet core in one sample indicates an early growth during epidote–blueschist facies metamorphism at <460°C and <0.8 GPa. Therefore, the Lu–Hf dates of drilled cores record the early prograde garnet growth, whereas the Lu–Hf dates of rim‐rich fractions provide a maximum age for the end of garnet growth. The microsampling approach applied in this study can be broadly used in garnet‐bearing rocks, even those without extremely large garnet crystals, in an attempt to retrieve the early metamorphic timing recorded in older garnet cores. Given a proper selection of the drill bit size and a detailed crystal size distribution analysis, the cores of the mm‐sized garnet in most metamorphic rocks can be dated to yield critical constraints on the early timing of metamorphism. This study provides new crucial constraints on the timing of the initial subduction (before c. 469 Ma) and the ultimate closure (earlier than c. 452 Ma) of the fossil Qilian oceanic basin. The extensive aeolian deposits of the Tibetan Plateau (TP) represent important environmental archives, recording information about the past interplay between the Asian monsoon and Westerlies and the link between dust accumulation and Quaternary glaciations. In the northeast TP, mantles of sandy loess form a distinct belt lying between 3500 and 4500 m a.s.l. on the east‐facing slopes of the Anyemaqen Mountains. However, there is little chronological information about the loess deposits in this region. This study provides a detailed chronology for loess formation in the region using luminescence dating. A total of 29 samples were collected from an 8‐m‐thick homogeneous loess section at Hebei (HB) in order to date sand‐sized (63–90 μm) quartz and K‐feldspar fractions using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL and pIRIR) signals, respectively. The resulting quartz and feldspar ages are in good agreement over the last 40 ka; beyond this (i.e. De >120 Gy), the quartz age is underestimated, and the pIRIR170 feldspar ages are considered more reliable. The HB loess section records continuous environmental information from c. 50 to c. 30 ka, i.e. throughout Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3. Mass accumulation rates (MARs) varied considerably over this period with increased dust accumulation around c. 38 ka and after c. 32 ka; in between, and at the beginning of MIS 3 (50–40 ka), the dust accumulation rate was ~50% lower. Finally, the HB section also records a MIS 2 hiatus of c. 17 ka duration, probably resulting from deflation. This study implies that loess deposition on the TP is predominantly an interglacial/interstadial phenomenon and the TP may be deflating at the same time as the Chinese Loess Plateau is accumulating, at least during MIS 2. Abstract: The low‐temperature thermal history of the Holy Cross Mountains (HCM) is investigated by apatite fission track and apatite and zircon (U–Th)/He thermochronology. Our results provide constraints on the deformation history of Palaeozoic basement rocks in the transition area from Precambrian to Palaeozoic Europe that are exposed from beneath Permian–Mesozoic sediments within the HCM. Late to post‐Variscan cooling of the Palaeozoic strata from maximum temperatures is shown to be a major feature of the HCM. This cooling likely followed a heating event related to burial and/or hot fluid circulation along the Holy Cross Fault in the late Carboniferous. The central part of the HCM shows a rapid cooling event caused by tectonic inversion, which started in the Late Cretaceous. However, this event was less pronounced in the western margin of the HCM, where slow cooling continued throughout the Mesozoic with only minor acceleration of the cooling rate since the latest Cretaceous. The geochemistry and detrital zircon geochronology of the Quemoco sandstones from the Woruo Mountain area, North Qiangtang Basin, are analysed to discriminate their provenance and tectonic setting. The sandstones were classified as litharenite according to their geochemical data. The index of chemical variability and SiO2/Al2O3 ratio values suggest that the compositional maturity and recycling are weak to moderate. The weathering indices, such as chemical index of alteration, plagioclase index of alteration, and chemical index of weathering, and A–CN–K (Al2O3–(CaO* + Na2O)–K2O) ternary plot reflect that the source areas have undergone a weak degree of weathering. The TiO2 versus Zr, La/Th versus Hf, and Co/Th versus La/Sc bivariate diagrams and multimajor elements discrimination diagram of Quemoco sandstones indicate that the provenances were primarily derived from felsic igneous rocks and may also have less intermediate igneous source rocks. The paleocurrent data and low composition and textural maturity of the Quemoco sandstones suggested that the provenances are mainly from the southwest of the study area and with proximal source features. The U–Pb ages studied here could be divided into 8 groups: 206–219 Ma, 268–283 Ma, 446–630 Ma, 700–970 Ma, 1006–1346 Ma, 1457–1843 Ma, 2087–2214 Ma, and 2331–2587 Ma. The provenances are mainly from the Central Uplift Belt and surrounding of the study area according to the detrital zircon ages and rare earth element parameters, which are composed of Late Triassic tuff, Permian basalt, Early Ordovician granite, Cambrian granite gneiss, and Precambrian crystalline basement. Two multidimensional tectonic discrimination diagrams based on major elements show a complicated tectonic setting composed of a collision, rift, and minor arc setting for the Quemoco sandstones, which is consistent with the nature of a rifted margin during the late Late Triassic. Abstract: The Chinese Western Tianshan terrane is a well‐known ultrahigh‐pressure (UHP) metamorphic belt that mainly consists of subducted oceanic crustal materials. While two uplift stages have been recognized, the early exhumation history has not been fully constrained. We conducted U–Th–Pb and trace element microanalysis of titanite as well as zircon from UHP eclogites. Apart from several inclusions in garnet, three types of retrograde titanite have been identified based on their petrographic occurrences: (a) in matrix enclosing relict rutile; (b) as coarse‐grained coronas around garnet; and (c) in veins coexisting with epidote and/or apatite. The three types of titanite are homogeneous in chemical composition, low in Al, enriched in middle rare earth elements (REEs), and depleted in light REEs and heavy REEs, suggesting their growth during retrograde decompression. Sensitive high‐resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) and LA‐ICP‐MS U–Pb dating of titanite from four samples, regardless of their textural occurrences, gave consistent ages of c. 306 Ma. Phase equilibria modelling and Zr‐in‐titanite thermometry indicate that titanite replaced rutile at ~14 kbar and ~570°C, following a nearly isothermal decompression from the UHP peak conditions of 30 kbar and 550–570°C. SHRIMP zircon U–Pb dating yields two age groups: c. 320 Ma and c. 305 Ma. The former is generally interpreted to be the age of UHP stage. The latter, overlapping the titanite ages, represents the timing of titanite growth during exhumation. Thus, we estimate that the near‐isothermal exhumation from the UHP peak conditions to the epidote–amphibolite facies retrogression (14 kbar) lasted c. 15 Ma, corresponding to an average exhumation rate of 3.4 ± 2.5 mm/yr (2σ). This exhumation rate lies within the range of oceanic LT‐HP belts in the absence of continental subduction, suggesting a similar slab exhumation mechanism that operates in the UHP regime. The consistent retrograde metamorphic ages recorded by titanite from different localities, and the general agreement among P–T paths in the adjacent area, suggest that the UHP unit of Western Tianshan metamorphic belt was likely exhumed as a coherent unit. Abstract: Two phengite–garnet‐bearing metapelites from the Nevado‐Filábride Complex, Betic Cordillera, one from the Ragua unit (sample 23085) and the other (sample 23098) from the Calar Alto unit, were studied in detail to elucidate their metamorphic evolution. We calculated various P–T pseudosections for different O2 and H2O‐CO2 contents and Fe3+/Fe2+ ratios with PERPLE_X . On the basis of the compositions of the garnet core and the highest Si content in potassic white mica, different peak pressures of 12.7 ± 0.7 kbar at 525 ± 10°C (23085) and 17.4 ± 1.2 kbar at 526 ± 17°C (23098) resulted (errors refer to an estimated 1σ range). The suggested clockwise P–T loop was followed in both cases by another loop caused by a reheating process. On the basis of garnet rim compositions, peak temperatures of 596 ± 10°C at 10.7 ± 1.4 kbar (23085) and 629 ± 11°C at 8.5 ± 0.7 kbar (23098) resulted, supported by Zr‐in‐rutile thermometry (23085: 591 ± 11°C; 23098: 607 ± 10°C). In situ dating of monazite (23085) with the electron microprobe yielded ages between c. 48 and 14 Ma. On the basis of the monazite composition and histogram analysis, two age populations with mean ages of 40.2 ± 1.7 (1σ) and 24.1 ± 0.8 Ma could be defined. Low Y2O3 contents (<0.6 wt%) in monazite point to its formation after initial growth of garnet. The older generation was therefore assigned to the formation of the garnet core and the early P–T loop. The younger monazite population was related to the late P–T loop. A geodynamic scenario is hypothesized that assigns the Eocene metamorphism to subduction of a continental margin to depths of 50–65 km, followed by exhumation in an exhumation channel accompanied by mixing of slices of different rock types including mantle rocks. This process ended with stacking of such slices causing reheating of the studied rocks in the Early Miocene. The noted time gap of c. 15 Ma between subduction and nappe stacking is similar to the continent–continent collisional orogeny of the Himalaya. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
