The dominance of large resource‐rich hegemonic economies, most notably Nigeria and South Africa, with extensive trade and possible financial linkages, exposes other Africa countries to intra‐regional spillovers. However, this strand of empirical analysis remains largely unstudied, as extant studies are mostly devoted to investigating the implications of external (global) shocks. This paper contributes to the existing literature by investigating the extent to which shocks to economic growth in Nigeria and South Africa spillover to three regional bodies, namely Central African Economic and Monetary Union (CEMAC), Southern African Development Community (SADC) and Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The paper distinguishes between trade and financial channels to identify these growth spillovers by using a two‐step FAVAR model. The results of the empirical analysis show that the trade channel is effective for growth spillovers from Nigeria and South Africa to the three regional blocs. However, we find no evidence of growth spillover from the financial channel, except between South Africa and the SADC region. The paper postulates that although the total intra‐African trade remains low, it remains an important channel for growth spillover in the continent. Thus, any initiative, such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) should be encouraged, to expand trade in the continent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper revisits the exchange rate pass‐through (ERPT) to inflation in Nigeria and South Africa by incorporating structural breaks and using time series variables, namely the consumer price index, nominal effective exchange rate, gross domestic product, and crude oil price. Based on the Maki cointegration test and a flexible estimation approach of the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model, our empirical evidence suggests that the long‐ and short‐run ERPT to inflation is complete for Nigeria, while for South Africa it is incomplete both in the long run and short run. This result indicates that prices are stickier in South Africa compared to Nigeria. The comparison between Nigeria and South Africa confirms the role of inflation targeting and central bank credibility on the ERPT. The results divulge further that output growth in Nigeria increases inflation in the long run while it is anti‐inflationary in the short run. For South Africa, the effect of output growth is negatively insignificant. In addition, the long‐run effect of oil price is negative and significant for Nigeria, while for South Africa the short‐run effect of oil price is positive and significant. This study examines whether knowledge causes economic growth in Africa's two leading economies, Nigeria and South Africa. Using the Vector Autoregressive and Vector Error Correction approaches, the findings show cointegration among the variables. The speed of convergence of the variables to their long‐term mean values is relatively higher for South Africa than for Nigeria. In the short run, it is observed that knowledge unidirectionally Granger causes growth for Nigeria, whereas bidirectional causality is observed for South Africa. The higher correlation between knowledge and growth in South Africa reflects the success of greater investment in education. Nigeria must increase investment in education and modern infrastructure to converge to South Africa's growth trajectory. Moreover, for Nigeria, (1) knowledge unidirectionally Granger cause growth, (2) evidence of bidirectional causality flow is apparent between trade, the economic incentive, and growth, and (3) health unidirectionally Granger cause knowledge. As for South Africa (1) there is bidirectional causality between knowledge, trade openness, and growth, whereas investment and economic incentive, unidirectionally Granger causes growth, (2) investment, trade openness, and health unidirectionally Granger cause knowledge, and (3) economic incentive unidirectionally Granger cause trade openness. In conclusion, this paper argues that a transformed education system can provide the knowledge base essential for promoting and sustaining economic growth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Support for the enrolment of adolescents in research has been constrained by uncertainties in parental involvement, and the lack of clarity in the ethical and legal frameworks. We conducted a scoping review to examine articles that explored the opinion of scholars on the question of adolescent consent and conditions for parental waivers in research in sub‐Saharan Africa (SSA). Guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses (PRISMA) tool, we searched electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASSE, EBSCOHOST) and also reviewed the references of articles identified for additional relevant literature. We included full text English articles focusing on adolescent consent and parental waivers in SSA that were published between 2004 and 2020. We excluded studies focusing on healthcare, theses, and reviews. We reviewed a total of 21 publications from South Africa (n = 12), Kenya (n = 4) and Botswana, Malawi, Nigeria, Uganda and Zimbabwe (n = 1 each). We identified four broad thematic issues: the current position regarding parental waivers and self‐consent; parental involvement in the consent process; the role of community approval or consent when adolescent self‐consent approaches were used; and complexities and ambiguities in legal requirements and ethical guidelines on adolescent consent. Our findings show inconsistencies and ambiguities in the existing legal and ethical frameworks within and across different countries, and underscore the need for consistent and clearer guidance on parental waivers and adolescent self‐consent. Harmonization of the legal and ethical frameworks taking into account varying contexts is critically important to ensure research on adolescents in SSA meets adolescents' specific unmet needs. Communication issues occur when foreign doctors from different cultural backgrounds have to treat local patients and attempt to establish rapport across cultures in order to diagnose correctly and advise treatment in a way that is acceptable to the patient. This paper reports on strategies used by Iranian and Nigerian medical doctors in public hospitals in Limpopo, South Africa, to establish and manage rapport in the opening sequence of their first meetings with local rural patients. The study used a conversation analysis method to examine the interaction of Iranian and Nigerian doctors with local South African patients against the background of Spencer‐Oatey's rapport management framework and cultural maxims of greetings and forms of address in the two countries. Recordings of opening sequences of consultations were examined to provide an understanding of the doctors' linguistic behavior. Consultations conducted by six doctors were recorded, transcribed, translated where necessary and analyzed against the background of the Rapport Management Framework. All the Iranian doctors were found to adopt different strategies from the Nigerian doctors even though both countries are classified as high‐context cultures and would be expected to use similar communication strategies. This paper tracks the progress of the Sustainable Development Goals in selected countries in sub‐Saharan Africa, namely, Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa. The study assesses economic indices such as GDP growth, employment, and poverty rate of each country to understand the present performance of these countries and the feasibility of it attaining the first goal of the Sustainable Development Goals. Considering the current economic outlook and trajectory of these countries, eradicating poverty in 2030 is highly unlikely, unless drastic measures are taken. GDP growth in Kenya is currently low, whereas the poverty and the unemployment rate are very high. Nigeria still battles with economic recovery following the recession since 2016 and a soaring poverty level. Equally, South Africa is saddled with the problem of rising poverty, unemployment, and corruption. The study recommends that cooperation between government, civil society, and the private sector needs to be drastically improved and promptly to meet the poverty eradication goal by 2030. This cross‐sectional study examined gender differences between male‐ and female‐typed housework during the early COVID‐19 lockdowns in 2020. Participants in Germany, India, Nigeria, and South Africa (N = 823) rated their housework share before and during the lockdown, then speculated about the division of housework performed by men and women in general, before and post‐lockdown. Women spent more time on female‐typed tasks and men (in Nigeria and South Africa) on male‐typed tasks before and during the lockdown. Irrespective of participants' gender, they speculated that men's and women's housework was more pronounced post‐lockdown than before, but we only found gender differences in South Africa and India. Gender role ideology (GRI) moderated the gender‒housework relationship in Germany, but gender did not moderate the paid work hours and housework relationship in any country. Our findings suggest that gendered housework persisted in these countries and raises concerns that this pattern is likely to continue post‐lockdown. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study was carried out to validate a questionnaire for assessing sensory quality control (SQC) knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP). The questionnaire, containing 24 knowledge, 13 attitudes, and nine practices items, was submitted to company representatives in South Africa and Nigeria. Confirmatory factor analysis and group comparisons among respondents and companies were carried out to validate the questionnaire. The final SQC‐KAP questionnaire consists of 24 knowledge (one scale), 11 attitudes (A bifactor scale, with a general scale and two subscales representing individual attitudes to SQC and those towards company SQC) and nine practices (one scale) items. The knowledge items had acceptable indices for difficulty and discrimination, and the attitudes and practices items had acceptable item‐total correlations. The final questionnaire can be used for the rapid assessment of SQC related knowledge and attitudes of food company employees and assessment of company practices. Practical Applications: This study is the first to validate a questionnaire for assessing SQC related knowledge, attitudes, and practices in the food industry. The SQC‐KAP questionnaire can be used to rapidly assess SQC knowledge and attitudes of food company employees for sensory services, and to identify SQC training needs. Stakeholders can also use it to assess the sensory quality practices of food companies to gauge their compliance to good practice and identify potential areas of improvement of their SQC programs. Rationale, Aims, and Objectives: Inappropriate prescribing is associated with preventable morbidity and mortality in the elderly. The American Geriatrics‐Beers (AGS‐Beers) Criteria was developed to guide healthcare professionals (HCPs) to prescribe medications appropriately in the elderly. However, there is a dearth of information about the knowledge and awareness of HCPs of these criteria, and their perceptions of appropriate prescribing in the elderly. This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge and perceptions of Nigerian and South African HCPs about appropriate prescribing in the elderly. Method: A 32‐item questionnaire was self‐administered among consecutively selected HCPs (physicians, nurses, and pharmacists) in one teaching hospital each in Nigeria and South Africa. Seven questions including six clinical vignettes from the 2015 AGS‐Beers Criteria were used to assess the participants' knowledge.The participants' knowledge was classified based on the total score as poor (0‐3), fair (4, 5), and good (6, 7). The HCPs' perceptions of appropriate prescribing in the elderly were evaluated using a 5‐point Likert scale. Mann‐Whitney U test was used to evaluate ranked variables at P <.05. Results: A total of 369 participants, 62.9% (232/369) mean age 42.75(9.35) years in Nigeria and 37.1% (137/369), mean age 38.66 (7.76) years, (CI = 2.32‐5.87, P <.001) in South Africa were evaluated. Many participants in Nigeria (52.6%) and 48.2% in South Africa had scores (4, 5).The majority of the participants (57.3%) in Nigeria and 67.2% in South Africa were not aware of any explicit criteria for prescribing to the elderly while 45.8% of the total participants with no significant difference between the groups (P =.332) "strongly agreed" or "agreed" that the basic professional training is adequate for prescribing medicines to the elderly. Conclusions: Many HCPs in Nigeria and South Africa had a fair knowledge of appropriate prescribing to the elderly and considered basic professional training as adequate for appropriate prescribing to the elderly. This study examines the changing impact of oil price shocks on Nigeria and South Africa. Using a structural break approach, recent studies have established the altered impact of oil price shocks consequent to the Great Moderation that commenced in the mid‐1980s. While several studies have focused on the oil–macroeconomic relationship in Africa, little attention has been paid to the variation across different periods. This study investigated the possible changing impact of oil on inflation and the real gross domestic product growth rate in the two largest African economies that are, respectively, net oil‐exporting and net importing countries. A data set from 1970 quarter 1 to 2016 quarter 4 was employed. An impulse response function was used as a referenced model while rolling impulse approach was adopted to ascertain variation across periods. Our findings show the magnitude of the impacts of oil price shocks has declined significantly since the 1990s. Several factors were adduced for the muted effects of oil in the two economies. These factors were largely driven by domestic policies and institutional reforms. Hence, not taking account of the time‐varying nature of the relationship may not provide a complete picture of the relationships between oil and macroeconomic outcomes among African countries. Abstract: This article presents a pilot and baseline African Green Growth Index (AGGI). The work is premised on the importance of Africa implementing green growth strategies. Baseline indicators allow countries to monitor progress towards green growth transition. The AGGI incorporates 48 indicators applied to 22 countries that had the requisite data. What emerges is that 18 out of the 22 African countries sampled scored 50 percentage points and above. The countries scoring below this threshold were: Egypt, Algeria, Nigeria and South Africa. The top five countries on the AGGI (as ranked from 1−5) were: Namibia, Zambia, Ghana, Tanzania and Togo. The authors recommend that for wider acceptance across the continent, the AGGI should work towards incorporating all 54 nations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Objective: To assess the effectiveness and safety of the administration of misoprostol, an orally active prostaglandin, in addition to routine uterotonic therapy as part of the active management of the third stage of labor. Methods: The present study was a hospital-based, decentralized, multi-center, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial. We enrolled 1103 women (out of a target sample size of 1180) at 4 hospitals in South Africa, Uganda, and Nigeria. Participants received a sublingual dose of 400μg of misoprostol or a placebo, in addition to standard active management of the third stage of labor, after vaginal birth. Results: The baseline characteristics of the participants were comparable. The difference in the primary outcome of blood loss of 500mL or more within 1 hour of randomization was not significant between the 2 groups (misoprostol 22/546 [4.0%] versus placebo 35/553 [6.3%]; relative risk, 0.64; 95% confidence interval, 0.38–1.07). Shivering and pyrexia occurred more frequently in the misoprostol group. No maternal deaths occurred. Conclusion: The present study did not confirm a beneficial effect of administering 400μg of misoprostol, in addition to routine uterotonic therapy, during the third stage of labor, but was consistent with other trials showing a cumulative modest benefit. Where routine uterotonics are available for prophylactic use, any potential benefit of misoprostol might not outweigh the likelihood of adverse effects.
