A significant and striking seesaw pattern of winter surface air temperature (SAT) has emerged, featuring pronounced warming Arctic and cooling Eurasian (referred to as WACE). This study investigates the subseasonal SAT modes across the mid‐ and high‐latitudes of Eurasia and their possible mechanisms based on daily reanalysis data from 1979 to 2022. Our results reveal that Eurasian winter SAT exhibits two distinct subseasonal modes, characterized by a correlated southeastward propagation of temperature and geopotential height anomalies (GHAs) in the middle and lower troposphere. Notably, the subseasonal SAT anomalies with eight phases constrained by the hydrostatic equilibrium, originate from the GHAs in the Arctic stratosphere and then transfer to the East Asia. The sixth phase of the transmitted subseasonal SAT mode is proved to be the key transition phase from the WACE pattern to its counterpart. Further analysis indicates that the strength of the transmitted subseasonal SAT mode is controlled by the tripolar sea surface turbulent heat flux anomalies over the north Atlantic. This has led to severe socio‐ecological consequences, including increased damage to our ecosystems. A noticeable pattern in winter temperature is the warm Arctic‐cold Eurasian mode, which has been observed on multiple time scales. Here we show, on the subseasonal time scale, during the winter in Eurasia, there are two different patterns of temperature changes, and they move together toward the southeast in the troposphere. One of these patterns, called WACE, goes through a repeating cycle from the Arctic to East Asia. We specifically looked at the reversal phase of this cycle, where we found that changes in the stratosphere above the Arctic region kickstart the process, and then the turbulent heat near the surface contribute to the changes in the polar region by triggering a Rossby wave. This study investigates the intermodel spread of changes in the Eurasian winter surface air temperature (SAT) based on Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 6 (CMIP6) and explains it from the perspective of circulation under shared socioeconomic pathway 2–4.5. Results show that the leading intermodel spread of Eurasian SAT change, derived from the intermodel empirical orthogonal function analysis (EOF), is characterized by a warming pattern of SAT change. This warming pattern is associated with the changes in the weakened Siberian High and Aleutian Low, the weakened subtropical jet, the poleward polar jet, and the tilting trough. The combination of these circulations has prevented the intrusion of the cold air to the south and therefore results in the warming SAT change pattern. Their relative contribution weights of the weakened Siberian High and Aleutian Low, the tilting East Asian trough, the weakened subtropical jet, and the poleward polar jet are 12.73%, 20.43%, 30.24%, 20.96%, and 15.64%, respectively. All these changes may be traced to the warm sea surface temperature (SST) changes in the western North Pacific and tropical Atlantic Ocean, via the meridional temperature gradient and wave trains, respectively. These warmings would be the potential metrics for reducing the intermodel uncertainties of the winter SAT projection at the end of the 21st century over the Eurasian continent. In this study, the intermodel EOF is utilized to derive the intermodel spread in the winter SAT change at the end of the 21st century over the Eurasian continent. In winter 2020/2021, several episodes of cold air outbreaks have wreaked havoc across much of China, resulting in exceptionally low temperatures over northern‐to‐southeastern China. Our analysis shows that the anomalous circulation leading to the cold wave in China was characterized as: (a) a strengthening of the Siberian high, (b) a deepening of the East Asian trough, and (c) a weakening of the stratospheric polar vortex. Prior to the winter, in summer and autumn, the largest sea ice loss along the Siberian coast was observed. We therefore address the question whether the substantial sea ice loss has contributed to the cold wave. First, applying singular value decomposition (SVD) analysis, we find strong coherence between the autumn Arctic sea ice coverage and temperatures over the central‐to‐east Asian region with the sea ice component (SVD1_SIC) reaching a record high in 2020 and displaying a decadal shift around 2005. Associated with both the interannual and decadal variations of the SVD1_SIC, there are similar circulation anomalies as described in (a), (b) and (c) above. Second, applying self‐organizing maps, wintertime daily air temperatures are clustered into nine nodes with Node‐1 mostly resembling "warm Arctic, cold Eurasia" pattern. The frequency of Node‐1 shows a similar decadal shift as observed in SVD_SIC1 above, with a correlation of about 0.56. Associated with Node‐1, the circulation anomalies are consistent with features highlighted in (a), (b) and (c) above. Thus, taking all the evidence into account, we conclude that the substantial sea ice loss along the Siberian coast contributed significantly to the 2020/2021 winter cold wave in China. The mechanism behind the contribution in this study highlights that the Arctic sea ice loss is favourable for certain circulation patterns on climate timescale, reinforcing disruptive chain of reactions on weather timescale, and leading to severe cold events. Based on statistical analysis using observations and idealized model simulations, previous studies have revealed the potential response of early‐winter atmospheric circulation and temperature anomalies to November Ural blocking (UB) anomalies. Using a large number of coupled simulations, this study found that the response is sensitive to the intensity of November mid‐latitude westerly jet over Eurasia. Stronger‐than‐normal November UB without a significantly weakened westerly jet could not cause significant atmospheric response in early‐winter. By contrast, stronger‐than‐normal November UB with a significantly weakened jet would be followed by a warmer Arctic‐colder Eurasia (WACE) pattern in December. The significantly weakened westerly jet favors stronger upward propagation of planetary waves, which causes stronger weakening and longer persistence of the stratospheric polar vortex. This stratospheric response persists into December and propagates downward into the troposphere interfering with planetary waves (especially wavenumber‐1). The lead‐lag UB‐WACE linkage modulated by mid‐latitude jet may have implications for sub‐seasonal predictability. Observations have shown subseasonal reversal of temperature anomalies between early and late winter over Eurasia, which is distinct from the seasonal mean condition. Based on the reanalysis data, the 1800‐year control simulation and the 40‐member ensemble simulations in 1920–2100 from the Community Earth System Model (CESM) Large Ensemble (CESM‐LE), this study reveals that the reversal of surface air temperature (SAT) anomalies between early and late winter is one of the dominant and intrinsic features of the Arctic‐Eurasian winter climate. Such a reversal is characterized by "colder Arctic, warmer Eurasia" in December (January–February) and "warmer Arctic, colder Eurasia" in January–February (December). Robust climate dynamic processes associated with the reversal of SAT anomalies, including subseasonal reversals of anomalies in the Ural blocking, midlatitude westerlies, and stratospheric polar vortex, are found in both reanalysis data and CESM simulations, indicating the important role of internal atmospheric variability. Further analysis reveals that the reversal of Ural blocking anomalies in late December can be a potential precursor for the reversal of SAT anomalies in late winter. The reversal of midlatitude westerly wind anomalies associated with the Ural blocking can affect upward propagation of planetary‐scale waves especially with wavenumber 1, subsequently promoting the contribution of stratospheric polar vortex to the reversal of SAT anomalies in late winter over the Arctic‐Eurasian regions. Such a troposphere‐stratosphere pathway triggered by the perturbation of tropospheric circulations is confirmed by the CESM‐LE simulations, and it may be useful for the prediction of subseasonal reversal of SAT anomalies. This study investigates the role of internal climate variability on the wintertime surface air temperature (SAT) trend over Eurasia during 1970–2004 based on outputs from the Community Earth System Model Large Ensemble Project. The SAT trends vary significantly in both spatial pattern and magnitude among ensemble members, indicating the essential role of internal climate variability on SAT trends. The leading modes of the spread of SAT trends are extracted via inter‐member empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis of the SAT trend patterns among 40 ensemble members. The first EOF mode shows widespread warming over northern Eurasia and slight cooling southward of 40°N during its positive phase. The second EOF mode displays a zonal dipole, with one center located in Europe and the other of the opposite sign over Siberia. The Arctic Oscillation and Scandinavian patterns are key dynamical factors associated with the two dominant modes, respectively. A dynamical adjustment method is further employed to decompose the internal climate variability into those related to large‐scale atmospheric circulation and residuals. The spread of SAT trends among ensemble members is primarily associated with the various large‐scale atmospheric circulation and second by the residual component that is closely tied to diverse snow cover trends over Eurasia, especially over northern Eurasia. These results may help understand the relationship between internal climate variability and winter SAT trends over Eurasia via dynamical and thermodynamical processes. In recent decades, the winter surface air temperature (SAT) anomaly in the Northern Hemisphere has exhibited a warm Arctic‐cold Eurasia (WACE) dipole pattern and this has undergone significant decadal variation. In this paper, the physical cause of the decadal variability of the WACE pattern is explored, and it is shown to be mediated by the phases of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO). Although the negative PDO (PDO−) or positive AMO (AMO+) favors the WACE pattern, the meridional structure of the pattern is significantly influenced by whether PDO− or AMO+ dominates. During PDO− (AMO+) phase, the winter‐mean WACE pattern shows an asymmetric dipole with weak (strong) warm anomaly over the Barents‐Kara Seas or BKS and strong (weak) cold anomaly over central Eurasia or Siberia, which corresponds to Ural blocking (UB) concurring with the negative (positive) phase of North Atlantic Oscillation in a winter‐mean field. The winter asymmetric WACE pattern is more strongly related to PDO− than AMO+. It is further found that an asymmetric sub‐seasonal WACE dipole pattern with strong (weak) warm anomaly over BKS and weak (strong) cold anomaly over Siberia is usually formed during the UB episode due to favored (suppressed) sub‐seasonal downward infrared radiation and turbulent heat flux over BKS during AMO+ (PDO−), which leads to a strong asymmetric dipole of the winter WACE pattern. In this paper, we address this issue by examining the different effects of Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) on the winter WACE pattern. It is shown that PDO− (AMO+) plays an important role in the occurrence of the asymmetric WACE dipole with weak (strong) warm anomaly over the Barents‐Kara Seas and strong (weak) cold anomaly over central Eurasia or Siberia through modulating Ural blocking and associated sub‐seasonal cold anomaly. It is also found that the asymmetric WACE dipole is more strongly dependent on PDO− than AMO+. Our findings are of great significance for understanding the physical cause of the decadal variability of the WACE dipole pattern in spatial structure. This study investigates how El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) modulates winter cold anomalies over central Eurasia (CE) using reanalysis data during 1950–2019. It is found that ENSO can significantly influence winter air temperature over CE mainly through modulating the strength and location of the cyclonic anomaly of Ural blocking (UB) or long‐lived UB events. A strong (weak) cyclonic anomaly of UB on the southeastern (eastern) side of the Ural Mountains tends to occur over midlatitude (high‐latitude) Eurasia during La Niña (El Niño) winters. Such anomalous circulation leads to a strong (weak) cold anomaly over CE, especially over East Asia, due to enhanced (weakened) cold air advection toward the CE during La Niña (El Niño). The UB‐related cyclonic anomaly in the midlatitude (high latitude) side of Eurasia is shown to be related to weakened (enhanced) eastward extension of strong westerly winds over midlatitude Eurasia during La Niña (El Niño) winters. Siberia is a region where despite global warming a winter cooling trend has been observed over last decades. This cooling trend and its potential linkage to Arctic sea ice loss are controversially discussed. However, recent winters have not been taken into account so far. Here, we analyse ERA‐Interim reanalysis data until 2017 and ERA20C reanalysis to investigate the robustness of the winter surface air temperature trends to updated and extended time periods. Our results show that winter temperatures in Siberia were above normal after 2013 leading to strongly reduced cooling trends since 1980. The trend before 2014 was dominated by four cold winters between 2010 and 2013. These cold winters were mainly caused by strong negative phases of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), except for the winter 2011/2012, where the NAO was positive and a strongly negative phase of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) in combination with low sea ice in the Barents Sea caused the cold winter. Both NAO and PDO shift from more negative to positive phases in 2014 and contribute to a return to warmer Siberian temperatures. Furthermore, the NAO shows no trend between 1980 and 2017 indicating that the suggested linkage between Arctic sea ice loss and a negative trend in this mode is not robust. However, continuously low Arctic sea ice in recent years and a slightly negative trend in the PDO since 1980 contribute to the remaining observed cold trends over parts of Eurasia between 1980 and 2017. This study evaluates the possible influence of the winter surface conditions in Eurasia on the summer circulation over the Asian continent and Indo‐Pacific region. We have analysed multi‐seasonal ensemble reforecasts for 30 years (1979–2008) using the National Centers for Environmental Prediction Climate Forecast System version 2 initialized at the beginning of each month from January to May. It is found that the reforecasts initialized in winter (e.g., February) overestimate the snow cover fraction, depth and water equivalent, as well as surface albedo in the excessively snow‐covered portion of Eurasia from March to June. These biases are generated and perpetuated by a snow‐albedo feedback, leading to excessive upwards shortwave radiation reflected from the overly snow‐covered surface and an intense cold bias from the surface to mid‐troposphere. Originating over land, the cold bias is extended eastwards over the northwestern North Pacific by the advection of prevailing westerly winds. The cold air temperature in the broad mid‐latitude Asian‐Pacific region causes significantly lower geopotential heights at pressure levels in the middle and upper troposphere and thus increases the upper‐level westerly winds on its southern flank over the Asian continent and Indo‐Pacific. A slower than observed snow melting rate helps the winter cold bias persists well into the summer season in these runs. As a result, compared with the reforecasts initialized in spring (e.g., May), winter‐initialized reforecasts feature lower geopotential heights in the upper troposphere over Eurasia and a stronger subtropical jet over the Asian continent and the North Pacific from May to September, especially in early summer. The CFSv2 reforecasts in both sets of cases have too little total cloud fraction over Eurasia during June–August, leading to enhanced downwards shortwave radiation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the present paper, the linkage between the predominant modes of boreal winter surface air temperature (SAT) anomalies over Eurasia and the preceding autumnal Eurasian snow cover is investigated for the period of 1979–2014. The first leading winter Eurasian SAT mode exhibits a strong signal over the region northward from 40°N; in association with this SAT mode, a significant zonal dipole pattern in snow cover can be observed in the midlatitude Eurasia during November. Such anomalous November snow cover strengthens the wave activity flux upward propagating over the middle latitudes, which can change the stratospheric polar vortex thereafter. In the following winter, the anomalous polar vortex signal propagates downward to the surface and gives rise to the negative Arctic Oscillation‐like structure. Consequently, this leads to the winter SAT anomalies occupying the area north of 40°N. The second leading winter Eurasian SAT mode shows negative values northward from 60°N as well as positive over the middle latitudes of Eurasia; in association with the second SAT mode, the significant anomalous snow cover appears to the east of the Ural Mountains during October. Such an anomalous snow signal can persist from October until the subsequent winter and produce a wave‐like structure with a southeastward propagation from the Ural Mountains to the midlatitude Eurasia in the midtroposphere and upper troposphere, which results in the dipole anomalous temperatures lying in the middle to high latitudes of Eurasia. The preceding autumn snow cover signal is valuable for the prediction of the winter SAT over the Eurasian continent.
