This study investigates the factors driving the financial literacy of adult population in Spain using a regression count model (specifically the latent class Poisson model). The paper pays special attention to the effect of certain financial attitudes and financial personality traits (such as financial myopia, risk aversion, attitude to financial planning and self‐perception of financial vulnerability) upon financial literacy. The results demonstrate a positive association between the financial skills, the sociodemographic characteristics and the attitudes and personality traits of individuals regarding finances. Furthermore, the analysis permits the conclusion that the effects of the financial attitudes analysed in the study vary among the different population groups, which suggests the need to adapt financial literacy promotional programs to the characteristics of the target group. Findings have implications for financial educators, practitioners and policymakers to help them recognize the proper financial program to be delivered on the basis of the FL levels and the sociodemographic composition of the individuals. Research has shown that even though standardized financial education has gained prevalence to promote financial literacy over the past decade, it has had little effect on personal financial planning. The present study used a randomized control trial to examine the effectiveness of a Python‐based personalized financial projection on young working adults in Hong Kong, to examine if and how this approach improves their financial planning. Participants assigned to the experiment group received standardized financial education and Python‐based financial projections, while those in the control group only received standardized financial education. The assessment based on the two‐wave data showed that Python‐based financial projection promoted future time perspectives, reduced temporal discounting, and improved financial planning via the full mediation of promoting financial attitudes. Although numerous applications for personal financial planning exist (such as Wallet, Walnut, Monefy, and Money View), our Python‐based financial projection stands out as the pioneering solution tailored for the hands‐on manipulation of programming code to effectively manage personal finances. Our findings suggest a new track to upgrade personalized financial projection and standardized financial education and contribute generously to the development of personal finance education. Past literature has explored the characteristics of individuals who use high‐interest and tax‐inefficient consumer debt products, such as carrying a monthly credit card balance and engaging with alternative financial services. That literature revealed that users of these debt products tended to be financially constrained households faced with an immediate liquidity need, and that they had lower levels of financial literacy. Much less is known, however, about the role financial literacy may play when a more advantageous solution may be available but not used—an example of which is securities‐based loans, which offer lower rates and potential tax preferences. Therefore, this study used the 2018 National Financial Capability Study to examine why investors use traditional debt products when they could likely have qualified for a securities‐based loan. Using bounded rationality as a theoretical framework, this research advances the literature in consumer debt and borrowing decisions. The results found that objective knowledge, as opposed to self‐assessed ability or confidence, explained the use of optimal debt products. This study aims to analyse and compare the perception and the knowledge of financial literacy of the Portuguese with training in Economics, Management, Finance, and/or Accounting. It is used a quantitative methodology based on a questionnaire that studies the perception of financial literacy and assesses financial literacy knowledge. The sample is formed by 395 Portuguese individuals with training in Economics, Management, Finance, and/or Accounting. The obtained results show that the scale of financial literacy perception presents a structure with three factors: 1–2 year financial goals and planning, long‐term saving, and taste for numerical calculations. The results also show that the Portuguese individuals present greater levels of financial literacy perception compared to their actual knowledge of financial literacy. The originality of this study shows that the utilized instrument was adequate to measure the financial literacy perception of the Portuguese individuals with training in the areas of Economics, Management, Finance, and Accounting. The difference between the perception and the actual knowledge of financial literacy among people trained in these areas should encourage a revision of the curriculums of these degrees, to shorten that gap. This study examines the financial literacy level of Indian professional women and its relation to their retirement planning behavior. We use factor analysis and the Rasch model to evaluate the validity and reliability of a financial literacy scale. Additionally, we use multiple regression to examine the association between demographic characteristics and financial literacy with retirement planning. Our results reveal that the respondents display low levels of financial literacy as reflected by a lack of awareness about both basic and advanced financial concepts. Further, a woman's age, income, profession (financial), and understanding of advanced financial concepts are key factors associated with retirement planning behavior. The findings have implications for financial planning professionals, advisors, regulators, and policymakers in guiding women to make better retirement decisions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Financial literacy is an important factor that affects financial assets saved for retirement. Based on the China Household Finance Survey (2017) data and the two‐stage life cycle model, we study the impact of financial literacy on retirement financial portfolios. The findings are as follows: (i) financial literacy has a significant positive impact on the choice of wealth management products, risky financial assets and the total amount of retirement financial assets, but it has a negative impact on the choice of bank savings; (ii) financial literacy has a significant negative impact on the proportion of savings but has a significant positive impact on the proportion of wealth management products and risky financial assets; and (iii) using a different financial literacy index, considering selection bias and the influence of financial practitioners in the household, we prove the reliability of the above results. The paper highlights the importance of financial education and provides strong support for public (government) involvement to strengthen financial literacy education and improve the awareness of retirement financial planning to reduce the financial pressures faced by many of China's elderly citizenry. In this paper, we analyze the decision to buy inclusive health and life insurance in Guatemala within a theoretical framework driven by new personality and cognition theories combined with traditional insurance theory. We designed and conducted a survey of samples of both non‐insured individuals and clients of Seguros Universales, one of the principal inclusive insurance providers in Guatemala. Our results show that personality traits and time preferences are strongly associated with an individual's decision to hold an insurance contract. We also find evidence that certain combinations related to health habits and personality traits can have an impact on such a decision. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: We reviewed the literature on four financial‐helping fields—the family resource management content area of family life education, financial education, personal financial planning, and financial counseling—in search of best evidence‐based practices when working with individuals and families concerning issues related to money. Method: Experts in each field of the financial helping professions reviewed common practices in their own field and identified best practices when possible. Results: Although we found that reviews of financial education outcome research exist, researchers and practitioners have made few attempts to examine best practices in these fields; most of the practices that professionals use in these four fields have not been empirically tested for effectiveness. Consequently, we provide a general overview of common practices within the four fields. This study examines whether the association between financial literacy and participation in risky asset markets is robust to variation on a more innate level: the propensity for financial planning. I find that individuals' propensity for financial planning is strongly positively related to stock market participation as well as membership in a voluntary workplace retirement savings scheme. This result holds when controlling for financial literacy and a range of demographic and control variables in a multivariate regression setting. Importantly, the positive association between financial literacy and risky asset market participation also persists, suggesting that these two variables operate through separate channels. Purpose: This study examined whether micro-savings programs can improve young adolescent girls' financial knowledge, savings behaviors, and schooling outcomes in Ghana.Methods: We evaluated the short- and medium-term effects of a randomized control trial in which a sub-sample of over 1400 girls living in the Eastern Region of Ghana received financial literacy training and a micro-savings account.Results: Girls in the intervention arm of the study initially exhibited higher levels of financial knowledge, planning, and savings, but some of these effects disappeared within two years. Nonetheless, girls with micro-savings retained their greater knowledge of interest rates, had higher levels of savings, and were more likely to save for school. The effects on girls' educational enrollment was strongest in the second year.Conclusions: Our results suggest that even relatively young girls can manage micro-savings accounts and that such programs, if sustained, can effectively build girls' financial and educational assets. Abstract: Propensity to plan is an indicator of financial capability that contributes to consumer financial well‐being. Previous research has shown that propensity to plan is positively related to objective financial well‐being but little research was found to examine its association with subjective financial well‐being. Using financial satisfaction to measure subjective financial well‐being, this study addressed this research gap and had three objectives: (1) to explore factors associated with propensity to plan, (2) to examine the association between propensity to plan and financial capability factors, and (3) to examine the association between propensity to plan and financial satisfaction. Using data from the 2015 US National Financial Capability Study, the results showed socioeconomic differences in propensity to plan. The results suggest consumers with more economic resources had higher scores in propensity to plan. In addition, propensity to plan was positively associated with financial capability factors, suggesting financial planning is a desirable financial behavior. Finally, propensity to plan made unique contributions to financial satisfaction after controlling for socioeconomic and other financial capability factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent years have brought a gradual shift of responsibility for pension provisions, financial planning, health care and various insurances from governmental institutions and firms to individuals. To tackle this challenge, individuals need applied financial literacy and not merely theoretical knowledge about financial products and mechanisms that does not reflect real‐life situations. We survey 448 business students in Canada, Denmark, Germany and Iceland to examine how financial literacy is expressed in their financial portfolios. We contrast these findings with the respondents' own expectations and needs. The results show that most respondents exhibit good financial literacy as well as a realistic assessment of risk and return and their impact on (financial) well‐being. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article describes the National Financial Capability Study ( NFCS) and provides general and methodological information to aid researchers in using these publically available and free data sets. The NFCS is a large-scale, ongoing study aimed at monitoring and better understanding financial capability in America. Data from the NFCS can be analyzed at the national, state, and regional levels. We provide detailed information about all nine data sets that currently comprise the NFCS, including sampling procedures, weight construction, and survey design. Recent economic troubles in the US and abroad highlight the importance of family financial capability, including an understanding of financial markets. Financial capability is the foundation for desired financial behaviours, such as saving, budgeting, using credit wisely and planning. Study participants, a subsample of respondents to a Turkish university financial literacy survey ( n = 374), who reported uninterrupted income for a 3-year period were grouped as 'planners' and 'non-planners'. These groupings allowed examination of the relationships between planning, financial management decisions, and differential outcomes in daily household financial well-being. The practice of preferred financial management behaviours was predictive of debt. This research makes a unique contribution to the literature, demonstrating the importance of uninterrupted income over income amount in support of the planning process. Findings of this study have implications for professionals in the family and consumer sciences field and other practitioners assisting consumers with improving financial management outcomes. The approach described in the present article intends to create a conceptual design for German reference budgets, which can be used for counselling purposes. The introductory presentation of the term 'reference budget' and its significance in general is followed by the explanation of budget management in private households in the microeconomic sense. This determines the requirements on budget counselling and the teaching of financial literacy. Moreover, being the ideal type, these represent the examination criteria applied for the assessment of available reference budgets. By a comparison of existing international approaches, it is then investigated whether and in which form reference budgets are used for counselling in various countries. The information thus obtained will conclusively be used to reflect the previous development process of German reference budgets. Their state of progress can be compared with the ideal type on the one hand and with internationally adopted concepts on the other hand. In conclusion, some requirements that follow from the ideal-type view can already be fulfilled with the German concept of reference budgets. This study explicates the concept of financial literacy, which has blossomed in use this century. Scholars, policy officials, financial experts and consumer advocates have used the phrase loosely to describe the knowledge, skills, confidence and motivation necessary to effectively manage money. As a result, financial literacy has varying conceptual definitions in existing research, as well as diverse operational definitions and values. This study dissects the differing financial literacy definitions and measures, urging researchers toward common ground. We developed an instrument to measure dimensions of health insurance literacy reflecting familiarity with health insurance terminology and proficiency with the Medicare program. The instrument's items were based on a conceptual framework integrating the financial and health insurance literacy fields and were fielded in a national survey of older adults. We found that overall levels of health insurance literacy were low to moderate. The oldest adults, those with lower education and income, and those with poorer health had lower levels of health insurance literacy. The items demonstrated good psychometric properties and construct validity. They are a promising way to measure selected aspects of health insurance literacy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
