In this paper, we explore the details of one youth's science-related learning in- and out-of-school at the time of her participation in an ethnography of youth science and technology learning across contexts and over time. We use the Cultural Learning Pathways Framework to analyze the youth's interests, and the related sociocultural, historical, material, and affect-laden practices in which she and her family participated. The following question guided our analysis: How do everyday moments-experienced across settings, pursuits, social groups, and time-result in scientific learning, expertise development, and identification? We found that this youth's interest in various aspects of the sciences was years in the making, embedded in situated events that were part of a space-time continuum bound by passion for the practices involved, influenced by specific cultural practices, and explored with the help of close family collaborators. We also found that school science activity in which the youth in question participated both supported and could have potentially constrained her science-related cultural learning pathways. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Objective: The article adopts a bottom‐up approach to examine the factors that influence the design, development, and diffusion of social innovation. These factors pertain to sociocultural complexities that complicate the commercial environment. Methods: This article presents findings from an ethnographic study of women market traders in Fijian informal marketplaces. These informal marketplaces are communal exchange arenas where many economically disadvantaged individuals come to make their living. Results: Findings highlight the resiliency of these traders in overcoming ambiguities and pressures that exist in these marketplaces. Conclusion: An understanding of women market traders' experimentation and strategies to manage daily tensions and policy‐related contradictions can potentially open up ideas for innovative business practices. This article will focus on perceptions about the health of tenants at an independent‐living residence for indigent elderly and disabled people. At this site tenants often resisted aid provided, which was a marked contrast to their caregiver's moral and legal imperative to help. This “caregiver's dilemma” will be explored within the shifting perspectives of older adults with low social and economic positions. In this diverse setting social workers engaged in caregiving practices to address social and economic inequalities. Ultimately, regulations designed to alleviate inequality created a framework to judge tenants on multiple fronts to foster and maintain their wellbeing. Under these conditions, interpretations of tenants’ behaviours toward care practices created boundaries with tensions embroiled in larger issues surrounding ethnic, linguistic, and social difference. By exploring these boundaries this research aims to address the growing complexity of affordable housing in the United States as the population‐at‐large continues to diversify. The primary topic in this discussion is the brief career of anthropological structural Marxism and the possibility of its continued relevance. That issue is framed by a more general one: on what basis are explanatory theories adopted and discarded in anthropology? The discussion of structural Marxism is framed within recent debates about the desirability of socio-cultural anthropology's traditional associations with other sub-fields of anthropology, and it is argued that the isolation of sub-fields is a regressive theoretical move. This ethnographic, instrumental case study (Stake 2003) of an atypical youth apprenticeship draws on sociocultural and critical theoretical lenses. Findings reveal that during an eight-month cycle, a paid apprenticeship provided a fertile context for 20 low-income, ethnically diverse, older youths to explore, reflect upon, compose, photograph, and ultimately publish their communities and worlds. These findings point toward a potential to deepen and broaden the theoretical perspective through which mainstream youth development is conceived. The author argues that adults' guided participation and youths' systematic engagement with multimodal literacies as identity work is a successful recipe for promoting critical youth development—a notion of youth development that not only acknowledges but also encourages youths' reflection on the intersection of race, class, gender, and power.
