Soil bacteria spend significant periods in dormant or semi‐dormant states that are interrupted by resource pulses which can lead to periods of rapid growth and intense nutrient competition. Microbial populations have evolved diverse strategies to circumvent competitive interactions and facilitate coexistence. Here, we show that nutrient use of soilborne Streptomyces is temporally partitioned during experimental resource pulses, leading to reduced niche overlap, and potential coexistence. Streptomyces grew rapidly on the majority of distinct 95 carbon sources but varied in which individual resources were utilized in the first 24 h. Only a handful of carbon sources (19 out of 95) were consistently utilized (>95% of isolates) most rapidly in the first 24 h. These consistently utilized carbon sources also generated the majority of biomass accumulated by isolates. Our results shed new light on a novel mechanism microbes may employ to alleviate competitive interactions by temporally partitioning the consumption of carbon resources. As competitive interactions have been proposed to drive the suppression of disease‐causing microbes in agronomic soils, our findings may hold widespread implications for soil management for plant health. Aim To explore large-scale patterns and the drivers of carbon:nitrogen:phosphorus (C:N:P) stoichiometry in heterotrophic microbes. Location A 3500-km grassland transect on the Tibetan Plateau. Methods We investigated large-scale C:N:P stoichiometry patterns in the soil microbial biomass and their relationships with abiotic factors and soil microbial community structures by obtaining soil samples from 173 sites across the Tibetan alpine grasslands. Results C:N:P ratios in the soil microbial biomass varied widely among grassland types, with higher microbial C:N, C:P and N:P ratios in the alpine steppe than the alpine meadow. The soil microbial C:N:P ratio (81:6:1) in the alpine steppe was significantly wider than the global average (42:6:1). Combined stepwise regression and generalized additive models revealed that variations in the microbial C:N ratio were primarily related to abiotic variables, with the microbial C:N ratio exhibiting a decreasing trend along the precipitation gradient. In contrast, variations in microbial C:P and N:P ratios were primarily associated with shifts in the community structure of soil microbes. The microbial C:P and N:P ratios were both negatively associated with all components of the soil microbial communities. However, the fungi to bacteria ratio only regulated the microbial C:P ratio. Main conclusions These results demonstrate that microbial C:N:P stoichiometry exhibits significant flexibility across various ecosystem types. This study investigated how microbial community structure and diversity varied with depth and topography in ice wedge polygons of wet tundra of the Arctic Coastal Plain in northern Alaska and what soil variables explain these patterns. We observed strong changes in community structure and diversity with depth, and more subtle changes between areas of high and low topography, with the largest differences apparent near the soil surface. These patterns are most strongly correlated with redox gradients (measured using the ratio of reduced Fe to total Fe in acid extracts as a proxy): conditions grew more reducing with depth and were most oxidized in shallow regions of polygon rims. Organic matter and pH also changed with depth and topography but were less effective predictors of the microbial community structure and relative abundance of specific taxa. Of all other measured variables, lactic acid concentration was the best, in combination with redox, for describing the microbial community. We conclude that redox conditions are the dominant force in shaping microbial communities in this landscape. Oxygen and other electron acceptors allowed for the greatest diversity of microbes: at depth the community was reduced to a simpler core of anaerobes, dominated by fermenters ( Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes). Spatial patterns of microbial communities have been extensively surveyed in well-developed soils, but few studies investigated the vertical distribution of micro-organisms in newly developed soils after glacier retreat. We used 454-pyrosequencing to assess whether bacterial and fungal community structures differed between stages of soil development ( SSD) characterized by an increasing vegetation cover from barren (vegetation cover: 0%/age: 10 years), sparsely vegetated (13%/60 years), transient (60%/80 years) to vegetated (95%/110 years) and depths (surface, 5 and 20 cm) along the Damma glacier forefield (Switzerland). The SSD significantly influenced the bacterial and fungal communities. Based on indicator species analyses, metabolically versatile bacteria (e.g. Geobacter) and psychrophilic yeasts (e.g. Mrakia) characterized the barren soils. Vegetated soils with higher C, N and root biomass consisted of bacteria able to degrade complex organic compounds (e.g. Candidatus Solibacter), lignocellulolytic Ascomycota (e.g. Geoglossum) and ectomycorrhizal Basidiomycota (e.g. Laccaria). Soil depth only influenced bacterial and fungal communities in barren and sparsely vegetated soils. These changes were partly due to more silt and higher soil moisture in the surface. In both soil ages, the surface was characterized by OTUs affiliated to Phormidium and Sphingobacteriales. In lower depths, however, bacterial and fungal communities differed between SSD. Lower depths of sparsely vegetated soils consisted of OTUs affiliated to Acidobacteria and Geoglossum, whereas depths of barren soils were characterized by OTUs related to Gemmatimonadetes. Overall, plant establishment drives the soil microbiota along the successional gradient but does not influence the vertical distribution of microbiota in recently deglaciated soils. Early community assembly of soil microbial communities is essential for pedogenesis and development of organic legacies. We examined fungal and bacterial successions along a well-established temperate glacier forefront chronosequence representing ~70 years of deglaciation to determine community assembly. As microbial communities may be heavily structured by establishing vegetation, we included nonvegetated soils as well as soils from underneath four plant species with differing mycorrhizal ecologies ( Abies lasiocarpa, ectomycorrhizal; Luetkea pectinata, arbuscular mycorrhizal; Phyllodoce empetriformis, ericoid mycorrhizal; Saxifraga ferruginea, nonmycorrhizal). Our main objectives were to contrast fungal and bacterial successional dynamics and community assembly as well as to decouple the effects of plant establishment and time since deglaciation on microbial trajectories using high-throughput sequencing. Our data indicate that distance from glacier terminus has large effects on biomass accumulation, community membership, and distribution for both fungi and bacteria. Surprisingly, presence of plants rather than their identity was more important in structuring bacterial communities along the chronosequence and played only a very minor role in structuring the fungal communities. Further, our analyses suggest that bacterial communities may converge during assembly supporting determinism, whereas fungal communities show no such patterns. Although fungal communities provided little evidence of convergence in community structure, many taxa were nonrandomly distributed across the glacier foreland; similar taxon-level responses were observed in bacterial communities. High-throughput sequencing technologies are now allowing us to study patterns of community assembly for diverse microbial assemblages across environmental gradients and during succession. Here we discuss potential explanations for similarities and differences in bacterial and fungal community assembly patterns along a soil chronosequence in the foreland of a receding glacier. Although the data are not entirely conclusive, they do indicate that successional trajectories for bacteria and fungi may be quite different. Recent empirical and theoretical studies indicate that smaller microbes (like most bacteria) are less likely to be dispersal limited than are larger microbes - which could result in a more deterministic community assembly pattern for bacteria during primary succession. Many bacteria are also better adapted (than are fungi) to life in barren, early-successional sediments in that some can fix nitrogen and carbon from the atmosphere - traits not possessed by any fungi. Other differences between bacteria and fungi are discussed, but it is apparent from this and other recent studies of microbial succession that we are a long way from understanding the mechanistic underpinnings of microbial community assembly during ecosystem succession. We especially need a better understanding of global and regional patterns of microbial dispersal and what environmental factors control the development of microbial communities in complex natural systems. Soil aggregate stability is an important ecosystem property that is altered by anthropogenic disturbance. Yet, the generalization of these alterations and the identification of the main contributors are limited by the absence of cross-site comparisons and the application of inconsistent methodologies across regions., We assessed aggregate stability in paired remnant and post-disturbance grasslands across California, shortgrass and tallgrass prairies, and in manipulative experiments of plant composition and soil microbial inoculation., Grasslands recovering from anthropogenic disturbance consistently had lower aggregate stability than remnants. Across all grasslands, non-native plant diversity was significantly associated with reduced soil aggregate stability. A negative effect of non-native plants on aggregate stability was also observed in a mesocosm experiment comparing native and non-native plants from California grasslands. Moreover, an inoculation study demonstrated that the degradation of the microbial community also contributes to the decline in soil aggregate stability in disturbed grasslands., Anthropogenic disturbance consistently reduced water-stable aggregates. The stability of aggregates was reduced by non-native plants and the degradation of the native soil microbial community. This latter effect might contribute to the sustained decline in aggregate stability following anthropogenic disturbance. The contribution of chemotaxis to the competitive colonization of the rhizosphere for the vast majority of the soil community is unknown. We have developed and applied a molecular diagnostic tool, based on a gene encoding the central regulator of bacterial chemotaxis ( cheA), to characterize and temporally track specific populations of native microbes with chemotaxis potential that are present in soil exposed to two rhizospheres: wheat and cowpea. The data show that the chemotactic-competent communities present in the rhizospheres of the two plants are distinct and less diverse than the bulk soil, indicating the development of unique microbial communities. Consistent with the supposition that selection and recruitment of specific soil microbes takes place in the rhizosphere, the dynamics of specific cheA phylotypes provides support for the hypothesis that chemotaxis provides a competitive advantage to some soil microbes. This is the first study to examine and profile the genetic diversity of chemotaxis genes in natural populations. As such, it illustrates our limited understanding of microbial chemotaxis for the majority of soil microbes. It also highlights the value of a culture-independent approach for examining chemotaxis populations in order to build empirical lines of evidence for its role in structuring of microbial assemblages.
