Objectives: The objective was to evaluate the effects of direct‐access physiotherapy on patients presenting with a musculoskeletal disorder (MSKD) to the emergency department (ED) on clinical outcomes and use of health care resources. Methods: We conducted a randomized controlled trial in an academic ED in Québec City, Canada. We included patients aged 18 to 80 years with minor MSKD. The intervention group had direct access to a physiotherapist (PT) in the ED immediately after triage and prior to physician assessment, and the control group received usual care by the emergency physician without PT intervention. The key variables included clinical outcomes (pain, interference of pain on function) and resources use (ED return visit, medications, diagnostic tests, additional consultations). They were analyzed using descriptive statistics and compared between groups using two‐way analyses of variance, log‐linear analysis, and chi‐square tests. Results: Seventy‐eight patients suffering from MSKDs were included (40.2 ± 17.6 years old; 44% women). For the primary clinical outcome, participants in the PT group (n = 40) had statistically lower levels of pain and pain interference at 1 and 3 months. In terms of resource use, participants in the PT group returned significantly less often to the ED. At baseline and 1 month, less prescription medication was used, including opioids, but there were no differences at 3 months. Although over‐the‐counter medication was recommended more at baseline in the PT group, there were no differences in use at 1 month, and the PT group had used them less at 3 months. There were no differences between groups at follow‐up for imaging tests, other professionals consulted, and hospitalization rates. Conclusion: Patients presenting with a MSKD to the ED with direct access to a PT had better clinical outcomes and used less services and resources than those in the usual care group after ED discharge and up to 3 months after discharge. We analyze data from 6,466 multistage horizontal hydraulic fracturing wells drilled into the Montney Formation over a large region in western Canada to evaluate the impact of geological, geomechanical, and tectonic characteristics on the distribution of hydraulic fracturing‐induced seismicity. Logistic regression was used to obtain a machine learning estimate of the seismogenic activation potential of each well. Our results fit the observed spatial variability, including an enigmatic change in seismicity at 120°W that does not correlate with any change in industrial activity. Feature importance analysis provides insight into data types that have the greatest impact on the results. Based on current data, seismogenic activation potential is most strongly influenced by depth of injection and distance of the well to the Cordilleran thrust belt. Plain Language Summary: A supervised machine learning model is applied within a zone of oil and gas development in western Canada to determine areas where hydraulic fracturing operations are more likely to induce earthquake activity. Geological characteristics are investigated to determine factors that exert the greatest influence on earthquake triggering during or within 3 months after hydraulic fracturing. Our results indicate that an enigmatic change in seismicity patterns at 120°W arises from a combination of parameters, including distance to the northern Canadian Rockies. These inferences may be useful for a general understanding of localization of induced seismicity. In the context of low consumption of vegetables and fruits and milk and alternatives among Canadian mothers and children, novel strategies are needed to improve maternal and child nutrition. This study evaluated the long‐term effects of an evidence‐informed healthy eating blog on dietary intakes and food‐related behaviours of mothers and their child. The study presents a secondary outcome analysis of a randomised controlled trial in which 84 mothers (mean age of 37.6 ± 6.7 years) of 2‐ to 12‐year‐old children living in Quebec City, Canada, were randomly assigned to a dietary intervention delivered through a healthy eating blog written by a registered dietitian (RD; n = 42) or a control group (n = 42) during a period of 6 months. Dietary intakes, maternal eating behaviours, food parenting practices, and body weight were measured at baseline, 3 months, at the end of the intervention (6 months), and 6‐month post‐intervention (12 months). Differences between groups were assessed with mixed linear models. Globally, this study found no evidence of long‐term differences in mean dietary intakes in mothers exposed to the blog and their children as well as other food‐related outcomes and body weight compared with the control condition. Potential predictors of adherence to dietary recommendations in mothers and children (e.g., involvement of children in household food activities) were identified. In conclusion, a healthy eating blog written by an RD did not result in evidence of any long‐term differences in dietary intakes and food‐related behaviours in mothers and their children compared with the control condition. Introduction: The literature suggests that differential colorectal cancer (CRC) screening adherence exists between Canada's immigrant and nonimmigrant populations. This study explores the impact of Ontario's population screening program, ColonCancerCheck, on CRC screening uptake in immigrant and nonimmigrant population groups. Methods: Data from 2005, 2007‐2008, and 2011‐2012 was obtained from the Canadian Community Health Survey, to represent the intervention periods (the time periods before, during, and after implementation of the ColonCancerCheck intervention). Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine the effect of immigration status on the risk of nonadherence to guideline‐recommended CRC screening, and an interaction analysis was performed to determine whether the screening differential between immigrant and nonimmigrant populations changed upon introduction of the ColonCancerCheck program. Results: Recent and long‐term immigrants were both at increased risk of CRC screening nonadherence compared to the Canadian‐born population (OR 3.73 (CI 2.25‐6.18) and OR 1.24 (CI 1.13‐1.36), respectively). While not statistically significant, there was an attenuation of the risk of nonadherence to screening for recent immigrants compared with Canadian‐born individuals after the implementation of the ColonCancerCheck program. Conclusions: This study provides evidence of a screening differential between immigrants and nonimmigrants, and suggests that the implementation of the ColonCancerCheck screening program in Ontario may have increased colon screening uptake amongst recent immigrants. Predicting forest composition change through time is a key challenge in forest management. While multiple successional pathways are theorized for boreal forests, empirical evidence is lacking, largely because succession has been inferred from chronosequence and dendrochronological methods. We tested the hypotheses that stands of compositionally similar overstory may follow multiple successional pathways depending on time since last stand-replacing fire (TSF), edaphic conditions, and presence of intermediate disturbances. We used repeated measurements from combining sequential aerial photography and ground surveys for 361 boreal stands in central Canada. Stands were measured in 8-15 yr intervals over a ~ 60 yr period, covering a wide range of initial stand conditions. Multinomial logistic regression was used to analyze stand type transitions. With increasing TSF, stands dominated by shade-intolerant Pinus banksiana, Populus sp., and Betula papyrifera demonstrated multiple pathways to stands dominated by shade-tolerant Picea sp., Abies balsamea, and Thuja occidentalis. Their pathways seemed largely explained by neighborhood effects. Succession of stands dominated by shade-tolerant species, with an exception of stands dominated by Picea sp., was not related to TSF, but rather dependent on edaphic conditions and presence of intermediate disturbances. Varying edaphic conditions caused divergent pathways with resource limited sites being dominated by nutrient-poor tolerant species, and richer sites permitting invasion of early successional species and promoting species mixtures during succession. Intermediate disturbances promoted deciduous persistence and species diversity in A. balsamea and mixed-conifer stands, but no evidence was detected to support 'disturbance accelerated succession'. Our results demonstrate that in the prolonged absence of stand-replacing disturbance boreal forest stands undergo multiple succession pathways. These pathways are regulated by neighborhood effects, resource availability, and presence of intermediate disturbance, but the relative importance of these regulators depends on initial stand type.
