Power system protection and asset management present persistent technical challenges, particularly in the context of the smart grid and renewable energy sectors. This paper aims to address these challenges by providing a comprehensive assessment of machine learning applications for effective asset management in power systems. The study focuses on the increasing demand for energy production while maintaining environmental sustainability and efficiency. By harnessing the power of modern technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL), this research explores how ML techniques can be leveraged as powerful tools for the power industry. By showcasing practical applications and success stories, this paper demonstrates the growing acceptance of machine learning as a significant technology for current and future business needs in the power sector. Additionally, the study examines the barriers and difficulties of large‐scale ML deployment in practical settings while exploring potential opportunities for these tactics. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the most recent papers and research trends in the fields of wind energy and artificial intelligence. Our study aims to guide future research by identifying the potential application and research areas of artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques in the wind energy sector and the knowledge gaps in this field. Artificial intelligence techniques offer significant benefits and advantages in many sub‐areas, such as increasing the efficiency of wind energy facilities, estimating energy production, optimizing operation and maintenance, providing security and control, data analysis, and management. Our research focuses on studies indexed in the Web of Science library on wind energy between 2000 and 2023 using sub‐branches of artificial intelligence techniques such as artificial neural networks, other machine learning methods, data mining, fuzzy logic, meta‐heuristics, and statistical methods. In this way, current methods and techniques in the literature are examined to produce more efficient, sustainable, and reliable wind energy, and the findings are discussed for future studies. This comprehensive evaluation is designed to be helpful to academics and specialists interested in acquiring a current and broad perspective on the types of uses of artificial intelligence in wind energy and seeking what research subjects are needed in this field. There is a change in the traditional power system structure as a result of the increased incorporation of microgrids (MGs) into the grid. Multi‐area MGs will emerge as a result, and issues related to them will need to be addressed. Load frequency control (LFC) is a challenge in such structures, which are more complicated due to variations in demand and the stochastic characteristics of renewable energy sources. This paper presents a cascade fuzzy active disturbance rejection control technique to deal with the LFC problem. In order to tune different parameters of controllers, a newly developed heuristic algorithm called the Gazelle optimization algorithm (GOA) is also employed. Moreover, due to the fact that multi‐area MGs are regarded as cyber‐physical systems (CPSs), a relatively new concern for LFC problems is their resilience to cyberattacks such as false data injection (FDI) and denial of service (DoS) attacks. Therefore, this research also presents a novel machine learning approach called parallel attack resilience detection system (PARDS) to deal with the LFC problem in the presence of cyberattacks. This paper introduces a shape‐based inflow scenarios reduction framework applied in long‐term hydro‐thermal scheduling. This scheduling problem involves strategically managing the limited stored hydro energy in coordination with the electricity system. The scenario fan problem, selected as a long‐term hydro‐thermal scheduling approach, can effectively represent the individual hydropower plants and their short‐term flexibility within the long‐term scheduling process, making it well‐suited for capturing the disaggregated physical characteristics of hydro stations. However, the computational burden of scenario fan problem increases due to the complexity of the cascaded system and the large number of inflow scenarios. To tackle these challenges, a machine learning clustering method is developed for extracting shape‐based features to capture the energy and shape attributes of hydro inflows. A comparative analysis was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method, comparing it with four established clustering methods. This evaluation was carried out on a hydro‐thermal test case, utilizing both in‐sample and out‐of‐sample data analysis. The findings demonstrate that the proposed framework outperforms other methods in terms of computational time by 42.6% and optimal reservoir trajectories by 12.1% considering K‐means using Euclidean distance as the benchmark. Additionally, this study showcases the feasibility of performing long‐term hydro‐thermal scheduling at a granular level, with detailed topological information and a shorter time scale. Wind energy is one of the most significant renewable sources of energy while accurate and reliable wind power forecasting methods may greatly benefit power system planning and scheduling. Recently, many machine learning algorithms have shown significant advantages in how to extract temporal features for wind power forecasting. However, wind power curves in the time domain frequently display intermittent features and significant uncertainty, which is not favorable to precise and reliable forecasting. In this paper, the Diffusion and Channel Attention‐based Wind Power Forecasting (DC‐WPF) framework is proposed, which transforms wind power data into the frequency domain while applying advanced channel attention techniques to aid the model in capturing the frequency domain information and ultimately enhancing accuracy. With high‐accuracy results, DC‐WPF then proposes a diffusion‐based framework to transform the point forecasting results into probabilistic forecasts to capture the uncertainty. Finally, extensive experiments on six wind power plants show that our method can improve the point forecasting accuracy of wind power and provide advanced probabilistic forecasts at a multi‐time scale. Over the last decades, renewable and clean energy sources are being rigorously adopted along with carbon capture technologies to tackle the increasing carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration level in the environment. CO2 capture is a quintessential option for tackling global warming issues. In this context, the present paper has reviewed the process intensification equipment called a rotating packed bed (RPB), which is highly industry applicable due to high gravity (HiGee) force. This facilitates strong mass transfer characteristics, a compact design, and low energy consumption. In this review, the current research scenario of RPBs using numerical, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and mathematical modelling, along with different machine learning approaches in the CO2 capture process, has been reviewed. The different geometry designs, hydrodynamic characteristics, performance parameters, research methods, and their effects on CO2 removal efficiency have been discussed. Furthermore, the latest experimental studies are also summarized, especially in the absorption and adsorption domain. The next wave in smart transportation is directed towards the design of renewable energy sources that can fuel automobile sector to shift towards the autonomous electric vehicles (AEVs). AEVs are sensor‐driven and driverless that uses artificial intelligence (AI)‐based interactions in Internet‐of‐vehicles (IoV) ecosystems. AEVs can reduce carbon footprints and trade energy with peer AEVs, smart grids (SG), and roadside units (RSUs). It supports green transportation vision. However, the sensor information, energy units, and user data are exchanged through open channels, and thus, are susceptible to various security and privacy attacks. Thus, AEVs can be remotely operated and directed by malicious entities that can propagate false updates to the peer nodes in IoV environment. This can cause the failure of components, congestion, as well as the entire disruption of IoV network. Globally researchers and security analysts have addressed solutions that pertain to specific security requirements, but still, the detection and classification of malicious AEVs is a widely studied topic. Malicious AEVs exhibit an anomaly behavior that differentiates them from normal AEVs, and thereby, the detection of anomalous AEVs and classification of anomaly type is required. Motivated from the aforementioned facts, the survey presents a systematic outlook of AI techniques in anomaly detection of AEVs. A solution taxonomy is proposed based on research gaps in the existing surveys, and the evaluation metrics for AI‐based anomaly detection are discussed. The open challenges and issues in AI deployments are discussed and a case study is presented on anomaly classification through a weighted ensemble technique. Thus, the proposed survey is designed to guide the manufacturing industry, AI practitioners, and researchers worldwide to formulate and design accurate and precise mechanisms to detect anomalies. For the past few years, the addition of renewable energy sources has been on the rise, but the unregulated addition of these sources can cause severe harm to the grid. Therefore, it is necessary to have a predefined limit for a grid, beyond which no further addition of renewables should be allowed without reinforcement. That limit is called the hosting capacity (HC), which is addressed in the literature by search‐based methods with heavy computational burdens. This manuscript first presents a framework to find the HC for a grid. The same framework is then applied to 503 different simulated but realistic LV distribution feeders in Finland to find their HCs and the most effective network parameters in defining a network specific HC. Next, different machine learning models, that is, Decision Tree (DT), Random Forest (RF), Linear Regression (LR), K nearest neighbours (KNN), Logistic Regression, and Support Vector Machine (SVM) are implemented on the generated data. For the classification case, the accuracy values for logistic regression, KNN, and SVM were 0.89, 0.84, and 0.81, respectively. The findings demonstrate that the developed machine learning based technique will enable distribution network operators in finding the HC without applying any deterministic or probabilistic approaches. Given the advancements in solar power generation and fifth‐generation (5G) technologies, it is crucial to reduce energy consumption based on accurate predictions of the photovoltaic power requirements of 5G base stations (BSs) connected to renewable energy sources. To ensure sufficient prediction performance even under complex weather conditions and promote two‐way flow of energy and information in the power supply system of the 5G BS, this work first proposes a reference scenario for a 5G BS with an energy router. Then, the comprehensive grey relational analysis is used to determine the optimal photovoltaic input variables. Finally, the improved logistic distribution, Laplacian distribution with inverse incomplete gamma‐function weight factor, and nonlinear mutation perturbation strategy are introduced to improve the ability of the sparrow search algorithm to avoid locally optimal solutions for an extreme learning machine of the short‐term photovoltaic power prediction model. The proposed model is applied to actual measured data for validation, and the results show that this model has the lowest mean percentage error as well as highest prediction accuracy under different weather conditions. The coefficient of determination for the proposed prediction model is greater than 99%; therefore, it is expected to improve the photovoltaic prediction performances of 5G energy‐routing BSs as well as promote sustainable development and sharing of energy and information. Probabilistic voltage stability assessment (VSA) of distribution systems has recently gained significant research attention due to the proliferation of renewable energy sources (RESs). This study presents a nonparametric data‐driven VSA in a look‐ahead framework by considering correlated variables. First, an accurate but relatively fast correlation model is developed by considering stochastic interdependency with unknown dependency structure. Then, the probabilistic density function (PDF) of the voltage stability index is estimated for near‐future minutes. The proposed method employs Bernstein vine copula (BVC) for estimating the unknown underlying dependence structure among different variables. This non‐parametric method imposes no assumption on the dependence structure and can handle the problems where no information is available for judging about dependence structure and its belongingness to a specific type of copula function. Additionally, global sensitivity analysis (GSA), with an embedded surrogate model based on the extreme learning machine (ELM), is utilized to rank the loads and RESs according to their contribution to voltage stability margin. Furthermore, a parallel implementation of vine copula construction and dimension reduction is developed based on the GSA to speed up the proposed VSA. The modernisation of the world has significantly reduced the prime sources of energy such as coal, diesel and gas. Thus, alternative energy sources based on renewable energy have been a major focus nowadays to meet the world's energy demand and at the same time to reduce global warming. Among these energy sources, solar energy is a major source of alternative energy that is used to generate electricity through photovoltaic (PV) system. However, the performance of the power generated is highly sensitive on climate and seasonal factors. The unpredictable behaviour of the climate affects the power output and causes an unfavourable impact on the stability, reliability and operation of the grid. Thus an accurate forecasting of PV output is a crucial requirement to ensure the stability and reliability of the grid. This study provides a systematic and critical review on the methods used to forecast PV power output with main focus on the metaheuristic and machine learning methods. Advantages and disadvantages of each method are summarised, based on historical data along with forecasting horizons and input parameters. Finally, a comprehensive comparison between machine learning and metaheuristic methods is compiled to assist researchers in choosing the best forecasting technique for future research.
