JOURNALISM , *NEWSPAPERS - Abstract
This article examines editorial practices at "The New York Times," in response to its subdued reporting of the scandal at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. The story regarding substandard medical conditions for returning veterans was first reported by "The Washington Post," and the Times has a policy of not following a rival. The author wonders if this institutional ego impedes the paper's responsibility to the public. Editor Bill Keller acknowledged as much but stopped short of reevaluating policy.
