There is a trend worldwide to induce pregnant women earlier. However, few studies have focused on women's experiences. The aim was to gain a deeper understanding of women's lived experiences of induction of labour in late- and post-term pregnancy. Phenomenology with a reflective lifeworld approach was chosen as the method. Twelve women participating in a larger study in which women were randomized to either induction of labour in week 41 or to expectant management until week 42, were interviewed one to three months after giving birth. The essence is described as follows: labour becomes another journey than the intended one. The women adapted to this new journey by seeing the advantages and handing themselves over to the healthcare system, but at the same time something about giving birth could be lost. The result is further described by its four constituents: planning the unplannable, being a guest at the labour ward, someone else controlling the labour, and overshadowed by how it turned out. Induced labour presents a challenge to maternity personnel to support the birthing woman's normal progress, not to rush her through labour, and to involve her in the process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To explore and analyse the experience of work situation and professional role for midwives at a labour ward pre and post the implementation of a midwifery model of care (MiMo). Methods: A simultaneous mixed method was used. The qualitative core component departed from three focus group interviews (n = 16 midwives). Secondary inductive and deductive content analysis was performed using an unconstrained matrix to make a corresponding comparison of the different time points. The supplemental component was a quantitative survey about the work situation (n = 58). Results: The qualitative results pre the implementation showed three categories: Balance between Women and Organization, Midwives—Diverse as both Profession and Person, and Strained Work Situation. Post the intervention they transformed to Balance between Midwifery and Organization, Midwives—An Adaptable Profession, Strained Work Situation, and a new category Ability to concretize midwifery was found. There were no significant differences in the measures of work situation in the quantitative analyses. Conclusions: The synthesized findings based on the qualitative part show that MiMo has a potential to strengthen the professional role and midwifery practice. Purpose: There is a need to gain deeper knowledge about women's experience of vaginal birth after caesarean section (VBAC). Considerable research has been conducted on VBAC; however, only a few qualitative studies focus on women's experiences. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe the lived experiences of VBAC among women resident in Sweden, a country with a high VBAC rate. Method: This studywas performed in accordance with a phenomenological reflective lifeworld approach. Interviews were conducted with nine women in an urban region of Sweden one year after their VBAC birth. Results: The essential meaning of the studied phenomenon is "to challenge oneself as a childbearing woman", which is further described by its four constituents: "striving for support from professionals", "desiring the experience", "contrasting and comparing memories of two different births" and "being part of the birthing culture". Conclusions: The experience of VBAC meant regained trust in the ability to give birth vaginally. The women lacked follow-up and support after the caesarean section (CS), during the subsequent pregnancy and the forthcoming VBAC. Enhanced support could be a key factor in helping women meeting the challenge and feel confident about giving birth vaginally despite their previous experiences of CS. Purpose: There is a need to deepen knowledge about midwives' care in obstetric-led labour wards in which midwives are responsible for normal births. This ethnographic study explores the content and meaning of midwives' care of women in a hospital-based labour ward in Sweden prior to the introduction of a theoretical midwifery model of care. Methods: Data were gathered through participant observation, analysed through interpretation grounded in reflexivity discussions and are presented in the form of ethnographic descriptions. Results: The midwives' care was provided in a field of tension in which they had to balance contrasting models of care, described in the themes: The birthing rooms and the office—Different rooms of care, Women giving birth or being delivered—Midwives' expectations and relationships with women, Old and new caring roles of the midwife—Women giving birth in a "new age", Being and doing—Different approaches to caring, and Holistic and reductionist care—Guided by contrasting models and guidelines. The midwives' freedom to act as autonomous professionals was hindered by medical and institutional models of care and this led to uncertainty regarding their roles as midwives. Objective: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a large public health problem with far-reaching consequences for those involved. The aim of this study was to explore fathers' experiences of change during pregnancy and early parenthood in the context of IPV. Methods: The methodological approach in this interview study was hermeneutics, based on a lifeworld perspective. Ten men, who had subjected their partners to violence during the childbearing period, and had become fathers within the previous 6 years, participated. Results: The analysis revealed four themes: beginning to acknowledge that you are inflicting violence, receiving confirmation that you are more than just a perpetrator of violence, becoming aware of the child, and the desire to receive support in the process of learning how to become a father. Levinas' concept "the face of the other" is used to interpret the findings. Conclusion: This study contributes to a more nuanced and expanded picture of IPV. It shows that men who inflict violence want to be and learn how to be fathers. We need more knowledge about how to stop violent acts and support these men in the process of fatherhood. A lifeworld hermeneutic approach was used in order to understand Swedish women's thoughts on childbearing. Nine women were interviewed, and they ranged in age from 22 to 28 years and represented diverse socioeconomic, educational, sexual, and fertility backgrounds. All women were similar in that they lacked experience of giving birth and parenthood. The analysis showed that childbearing includes dimensions of both immanence and transcendence. Immanence, as childbearing is seen as stagnant to women's freedom in present life. Transcendence, as childbearing is thought of as a project for future life, a part of female identity, and a conscious standpoint for which the woman wants to be prepared and for which she wants to create the best conditions. In this study a phenomenological approach was used in order to enter deeply into the experience of living with violence during pregnancy. The aim of the study was to gain a deeper understanding of women's experiences of being exposed to intimate partner violence (IPV) during pregnancy. The data were collected through in-depth interviews with five Norwegian women; two during pregnancy and three after the birth. The women were between the age of 20 and 38 years. All women had received support from a professional research and treatment centre. The essential structure shows that IPV during pregnancy is characterized by difficult existential choices related to ambivalence. Existential choices mean questioning one's existence, the meaning of life as well as one's responsibility for oneself and others. Five constituents further explain the essential structure: Living in unpredictability, the violence is living in the body, losing oneself, feeling lonely and being pregnant leads to change. Future life with the child is experienced as a possibility for existential change. It is important for health professionals to recognize and support pregnant women who are exposed to violence as well as treating their bodies with care and respect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: There are few studies focusing on women's experiences of early pregnancy. Medical and psychological approaches have dominated the research. Taking women's experiences seriously during early pregnancy may prevent future suffering during childbirth. Aim: To describe and understand women's first time experiences of early pregnancy. Method: Qualitative study using a phenomenological hermeneutic approach. Data were collected via tape-recorded interviews in two antenatal care units in Sweden. Twelve first time pregnant women in week 10-14, aged between 17 and 37 years participated. Results: To be in early pregnancy means for the women a life opening both in terms of life affirming and suffering. The central themes are: living in the present and thinking ahead, being in a change of new perspectives and values and being in change to becoming a mother. Conclusions: The results have implications for the midwife's encounter with the women during pregnancy. Questions of more existential nature, instead of only focusing the physical aspects of the pregnancy, may lead to an improvement in health condition and a positive experience for the pregnant woman. This phenomenological hermeneutic study of 10 Swedish midwives illuminates the internal conflicts of values that arise when midwives' professional and personal belief systems clash in encounters with teenagers. Midwives may react emotionally in situations where teenagers ignore advice on contraception by rejecting the use of contraceptives and preferring early abortions as a contraceptive method. The results strengthen the suggestion that caregivers need support in reflecting on how to deal with conflicts of values that may otherwise hinder them in communicating effectively with teenagers and encounter their life-worlds and in challenging their individual assumptions on the shortcomings of using contraceptives. We used, phenomenological method to describe fertility as it was experienced by young women who have chosen to take contraceptive pills. The women lacked experience from pregnancy and parenthood. We interviewed ten women aged 23-27 years. We found that fertility was experienced as paradoxical, as follows: fertility as a power that has to be suppressed, experiencing fertility in the present time and as a future finite possibility, and having one's own fertile responsibility governed by society. The experience of childbirth is an important life experience for women. However, in-depth knowledge about long-term experiences is limited. The aim of the study was to describe women's experiences two to 20 years after birth. This study is a part of a meta-synthesis project about childbearing in the Nordic countries. Methodologically, the study was a secondary analysis performed on original data from three selected qualitative studies by the authors, in three Nordic countries, Finland, Iceland and Sweden, and in two different forms of care, birth centre care and standard maternity care. There were 29 participants, both primipara and multiparous women. The result from this study shows that women, in a long-term perspective describe childbirth as an encounter with different participants and the most important is with the midwife. The midwife is also important in connection to the atmosphere experienced during birth. The childbirth experience has a potential to strengthen self-confidence and trust in others or, on the contrary, it can mean failure or distrust. Impersonal encounters linger feelings of being abandoned and alone. This dimension is in particular demonstrated in the description of the woman who had given birth at standard maternity care. The conclusion of this study is that childbirth experience has a potential to strengthen self-confidence and trust in others or on the contrary failure or distrust. Developing the best care for clients and patients is a paramount aim of all health care practices, which therefore, should be based on best evidence. This is also crucial for care during the childbearing period here defined as pregnancy, childbirth, and infancy. However, due to dominance of the evidence-based medicine (EBM) model, health care practice has encountered problems especially regarding its relationship to qualitative research. In this article, we analyze and discuss how research based on a lifeworld perspective fits with evidence-based care (EBC), and how a circular model instead of a hierarchy is suitable when attributing value to knowledge for EBC. The article focuses on the history of EBM and EBC, the power of the evidence concept, and EBC from a narrow to a broad view. Further qualitative research and its use for developing EBC is discussed and examples are presented from the authors' own lifeworld research in the Nordic childbearing context. Finally, an alternative circular model of knowledge for EBC is presented. In order to develop evidence-based care, there is need for multiple types of scientific knowledge with equal strength of evidence, integrated with clinical experience, setting, circumstances and health care resources, and incorporating the experiences and clinical state of the childbearing woman and her family. This study, using a hermeneutic approach, is based on data from four focus group interviews with 25 Swedish teenagers participating, ranging from 18-19 years of age. The aim is to gain a deeper understanding of teenagers' values and attitudes towards sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and sexual risk-taking. The teenagers seem to seek an excuse to fend off responsibility and deny their sexual risk-taking, an excuse provided by drunkenness. Under the influence of alcohol, teenagers are not too shy to have sex but remain embarrassed to talk about condom use. It seems as though the dialogue feels more intimate than the intercourse when it comes to protecting ones sexual health. To be able to act out in this sexual risk-taking the teenager often views the partner in a one-night-stand as an object, as opposed to a love relationship where they view their partner as subject, a person they care for. Engaging in sexual risk-taking often starts at a club where the teenagers go out to socialize and drink alcohol. They then play a game and a part of the game is to pretend that they do not play a game. In this game, certain rules are to be followed and the rules are set up by the girl, mainly to protect the romantic image of being carefully selected and thereby protected from being stigmatized as “sluts” or “whores”.
