Artificial intelligence (AI) empowers the real economy, promotes intelligent transformation, and upgrades enterprises. However, whether AI applications improve enterprises' total factor productivity (TFP) in developing countries remains unknown. Based on a textual analysis of the annual reports of Chinese A-share listed companies, we constructed indicators to measure AI applications in companies. Furthermore, the development status and influencing factors of AI applications in Chinese enterprises were explored, and the influence of AI applications on TFP was examined. The results reveal that the probability of AI application varies across enterprises. Large enterprises with a low proportion of fixed assets and high profitability are located in highly market-oriented regions and those operating in strongly competitive industries are more likely to apply AI. AI applications can significantly increase TFP, which holds true after a series of robustness tests. This influence is heterogeneous across industries and enterprises, and the positive effects are more pronounced for producer services and high-tech manufacturing, as well as state-owned, large, and labour-intensive enterprises. This study investigates the influence of business strategy on green total factor productivity (GTFP), focusing on the mediating effect of digital transformation and the moderating effect of organizational legitimacy. Leveraging micro-data from China’s listed industrial enterprises spanning from 2011 to 2021, findings reveal: (1) Prospector strategies exhibit a greater propensity to enhance GTFP compared to defender strategies. (2) Digital transformation partially mediates between business strategy and GTFP. (3) Organizational legitimacy moderates between business strategy and GTFP. Specifically, when a company possesses robust financial standing (pragmatic legitimacy), a better environmental track record (moral legitimacy), and establishment of Environmental Management System certification (cognitive legitimacy), the positive relationship between business strategy and GTFP is strengthened. (4) Further research indicates that business strategy exerts a more pronounced effect on enhancing GTFP for companies with larger scales and weaker political connections, as well as those situated in regions characterized by high fiscal revenue and favorable legal environments. This study investigates the impact of regional digital economy development on firms’ Green Total Factor Productivity (GTFP), aiming to understand its role in enhancing green governance efficiency. Using panel data from Chinese listed firms and cities from 2011 to 2019, we empirically analyse the impact. Our findings reveal that regional digital economy development significantly improves firm GTFP by enhancing technical efficiency, fostering ICT agglomeration, and advancing industrial structure. Additionally, the impact varies based on city traits (e.g. fossil-fuel reliance, low-carbon focus, and Yangtze River Economic Belt location) and firm specifics (e.g. state-owned enterprises and financially constrained firms), as well as market competition. In recent years, the effects of migration on economic outcomes have gained significant attention among researchers and policymakers. In the African context, the complex interplay between migration and economic outcomes is of particular importance, as many countries face unique challenges, such as limited resources, ongoing conflicts, and uneven development. This paper explores the impact of immigration, international migrant cash transfers, and emigration on total factor productivity in Africa, and its implications for public policy. We used the World Development Indicators, the Pen World Table from 2000 to 2020, and instrumental variable estimation in an endogenous growth model. The findings indicate that emigrant human capital and remittances have a negative impact on total factor productivity, whereas immigrant human capital positively affects it. These results highlight the importance of well-defined public migration policies that promote brain circulation, attract skilled immigrants, enhance domestic human capital development, and foster regional co-operation. AbstractWith new technologies emerging, productivity is increasing, while environmental issues are being addressed. Studies focus on the benefits of technological progress but pay limited attention to potential risks. This paper uses data from 286 Chinese cities to explore the impact of industrial robots on urban green total factor productivity. We find that industrial robots significantly reduces urban green total factor productivity. Mechanism analysis shows the main effect is driven by manufacturing agglomeration and crowding out environmental investment. Urban green total factor productivity decomposition shows that industrial robots block green technical progress and efficiency. Heterogeneity analysis shows that industrial robots significantly impact urban green total factor productivity in developed, highly market-oriented, and industrialized regions. Our findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the role of industrial robots in urban green development and provide corresponding policy implications for guiding the harmonious development of technology and sustainable urban growth. This paper studies the knowledge spillover effect through industrial correlation in the process of interregional textile industry transfer and its effects on the TFP of China's textile industry. The paper calculates the industrial similarity coefficients of subdivided industries with the textile industry and identifies the related industries of China's textile industry by using the data of China's input-output table and extension tables from 2002 to 2017. Then, the paper defines the industrial correlation spillover as the weighted sum of the indirect R&D investment of one industry from its related industries and constructs a quantitative method to qualify the industrial correlation spillover. Furthermore, the paper makes two empirical analyses on the existence of industrial correlation spillover in the interregional industrial transfer and its effects on productivity using the panel data of two-digit subdivided industries in 30 provinces. The results show that the correlation spillover effect does exist and promotes the interregional textile industry transfer from the eastern coastal region to the central and the northern-coastal regions; the correlation spillover from the related tertiary industries in industrial transfer promotes the TFP of China's textile industry, but the correlation spillover from the related secondary industries impedes the TFP of the textile industry. The study re-examines convergence among Indian states by estimating their total factor productivity (TFP) for the period 1990/91–2018/19. The novelty of the study is the decomposition of TFP change into efficiency change and technological change using the Malmquist index in a spatial dependence framework to test convergence. Findings reveal that, on average, productivity increased at an aggregate level for the entire period on account of the impressive growth of technological innovation. However, technological growth convergence could not lead to productivity growth convergence in the second sub-period because of no convergence in efficiency growth. Alongside, while we witness significant spatial spillovers in both technology and efficiency, convergence was observed only with respect to technology growth in the second sub-period. The congruence of technological convergence and significant spatial spillovers indicates that while states may be converging in technology, they do not do so independently but display movements similar to their regional neighbours. Industrial convergence refers to the dynamic process in which different industries gradually form new industries through mutual penetration and cross. As an advanced form of industrial synergy, industrial convergence is crucial in building a modern economic system. Using a panel data set covering China's 30 provinces during 2006–2018, this study explores the impact of industrial convergence on regional high-quality development. The findings suggest that: (1) Industrial convergence is conducive to high-quality development, and this conclusion remains robust after a series of tests. (2) For heterogeneity, the positive impact of industrial convergence on high-quality development is greater in regions with optimized energy structure and high investment outward, as does the regions with reasonable financial structure and moderate economic agglomeration. (3) Productivity improvement and industrial upgrading are the mediating paths by which industrial convergence promotes high-quality development, and the former plays a greater role. In the digital era of governance, few studies have analysed the influence of digital government on micro economies. To fill this gap, we explore the nexus between digital government and firm total factor productivity (TFP), and uncover the potential transmission channels behind this connection by focusing on Chinese listed firms from 2010 to 2017 and utilizing panel regression with firm-, year-, and province-fixed effects. Our findings confirm that digital government has constructive effects on firm TFP. Furthermore, empirical results suggest that this favourable impact can be transmitted through three channels of firm transaction costs and innovation, digital infrastructure construction, and government-market relationships. Further analysis reveals that the beneficial effect of digital government on firms is more significant in provinces with low fiscal transparency and complex topography, indicating that digital government compensates for the disadvantages of low fiscal transparency and inconvenience of steep terrain. It has become a new trend for the future development of Chinese agriculture to accelerate the transformation from increasing production to improving quality and realizing green growth. This paper uses the sequential DEA to measure the agricultural green total factor productivity (GTFP) of 306 Chinese cities from 1996 to 2017, then tests its convergence. The results show that the average growth rate of Chinese agricultural GTFP is 0.58%; the main driving force coming from technical progress. The convergence of agricultural GTFP has dual characteristics of stages and regions, and the significant σ convergence only exists in the central region during 1996–2003. There is significant β convergence at the national level, in the eastern and central regions, and neither convergence nor divergence in the western region. However, during 2004–2017, only the eastern region had β convergence. This paper investigates the impact on polluting emissions as a result of manufacturing industries in China offering services as well as products. We merge detailed firm-level statistics covering 2000 to 2011, and use two-way linear fixed effects regression to control for firm and year heterogeneities and a host of control variables. The empirical results show that manufacturing servitization significantly reduces the emission intensity of firms. This effect is achieved by improving the total factor productivity of firms, optimizing the efficiency of energy use, and increasing the share of the highly-skilled labour force. Moreover, the emission reduction effect of manufacturing servitization is more profound in the eastern and central regions, pollution-intensive industries, non-state-owned firms, and processing trade firms. In addition, our extended analysis shows that the emission reduction effects of manufacturing servitization can be strengthened through trade liberalization and cohort study. The major policy implication is that governments should undertake industrial policies that reinforce the positive effects of manufacturing servitization in order to achieve win-win outcomes in manufacturing upgrading and environmental protection. Labour productivity growth in the construction sector has been very weak in recent decades in most OECD countries. This paper addresses this issue based on a panel of 23 countries over the period 1995–2015. First, we use the Ackerberg, Caves, and Frazer (2015) method to propose a multifactor explanation for this lack of productivity growth: (i) average TFP growth is close to zero and even negative for most countries; (ii) average contributions to growth of capital and intermediate inputs are positive but weak, respectively of 0.05% and 0.90% per year, and much smaller than in the manufacturing sector over the same period (respectively of 0.40% and 3.10% per year). Then, we investigate whether reforms of regulations specific to the construction sector might boost productivity there. Using regulation indicators from the 'Doing Business Report', we find a negative impact of these regulations on TFP, but not on the intensities of capital and intermediate inputs. Our results suggest that reducing the construction sector regulations might bolster productivity: a switch to the lightest regulations would lead to a long-term TFP increase of 6% on average. Increasing agricultural productivity and reducing carbon emissions are two major challenges that China faces. This paper explores how agricultural insurance affects agricultural green total factor productivity (AGTFP) that addresses these two challenges. First, we adopt DDF-GML to measure AGTFP, and the Dagum's Gini decompositions results show the large differences in AGTFP, with transvariation between subregions contributing the most. Second, we find the U-shaped effect of agricultural insurance on AGTFP in a large country context. The result remains robust after adjusting for time, sample and estimation method of AGTFP. We also construct instrumental variables from the minimum distance from the centroid of counties within a province to the 45 ports in China and two-stage lagged agricultural insurance penetration (AIP) for AIP, and their squares as instrumental variables for AIP2. The conclusion remains robust in 2SLS model. Third, the findings confirm three channels for agricultural insurance to influence the AGTFP: environmentally friendly production, labor inputs and operation scale. Using empirical data from China, this study examines the impact of local internet development on non-executive employees' salaries. Research findings show that internet development can increase employees' salary and pay-performance sensitivity. This effect can be more significant in non-state-owned enterprises (Non-SOEs for short), firms faced with fierce competition, and firms paid little attention to employee protection. Mechanism analysis finds that the positive impact of internet development on increasing total factor productivity and reducing information asymmetry can partly interpret the effect. Corporate green technology innovation (GTI) is an effective way to solve environmental problems and achieve the goal of sustainable development. It is of great theoretical significance and strategic value to explore the influence of government behavior on corporate GTI. Based on institutional theory and attention theory, this study empirically examines the impact of government environmental attention (GEA) on corporate GTI by using data for China’s A-share listed companies from 2010 to 2021. We find that GEA can significantly promote corporate GTI, and there are four channels of action: strengthening environmental regulatory policies, increasing green investment, strengthening environmental information disclosure, and enhancing corporate social responsibility. Moreover, executive environmental experience, public environmental participation and social media attention positively moderated the impact of GEA on firms’ GTI. Heterogeneity analyses show that these positive effects are more significant in regions with low enforcement intensity, eastern regions, heavily polluted industries and state-owned firms. We also find that GEA can significantly enhance the efficiency and quality of GTI in enterprises, as well as encourage GTI among heavily polluting firms. GTI positively affects enterprise value, total factor productivity, and also improves enterprise environmental performance. Our results provide direct evidence from developing countries that GEA promotes GTI, and also provide theoretical support and decision-making references for further improving environmental policies and achieving sustainable development. It is widely believed digital technologies are transforming all aspects of economy and society, driven by scientific advances across interdisciplinary fields and innovations relating to artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, robotics, etc. But what, if anything, is revolutionary about these developments and what are the implications for the neo-liberal opportunity bargain based on a market competition where 'learning equals earning'. This article outlines different interpretations of the 'fourth industrial revolution' presenting contrasting theories of labour scarcity and job scarcity, to highlight why we need to rethink education, opportunity and the future of work in a context of increasing job scarcity. This is urgent not because we are approaching the end of work, but the end of 'knowledge' work as understood in public policy, with no viable solution to how to create in a new opportunity bargain for a fair and efficient future of work. This paper examines how firm heterogeneity plays a role in trade deflection effects when exporters exit trading partners' markets with trade-restrictive measures and deflect exports toward third markets with less stringent ones. We develop a Cournot-type three-country theoretical framework that highlights the role of firm productivity in trade deflection effects of trade-restrictive measures and empirically examine research hypotheses using a firm–product–destination level panel data of Korean exporting firms during the 1996–2010 period. We find that highly productive firms facing higher tariffs are more likely to deflect export to new third-country markets with lower tariffs as alternatives. However, once they enter the third destination, the positive effect of tariffs on the deflection of trade volume is less prominent for highly productive firms due to a lower trade destruction effect for them. Our results imply that the magnitude of trade deflection at both the intensive and extensive margins can be heterogeneous across firm productivity and multi-destination status. This paper examines the causal effect of regional market integration on firm productivity through the use of 2001–2008 firm-level microdata in China. The research design relies on a regression discontinuity design based on China's Pan-Pearl River Delta (PPRD) regional cooperation policy. The results indicate that the PPRD regional cooperation policy increases the total factor productivity (TFP) of firms by 6% on average. The positive impact of the PPRD regional cooperation policy on TFP is greater for private firms, large firms, and labour-intensive firms. Exploring the mechanism through which regional cooperation increases firm TFP, we find that the PPRD regional cooperation policy improves firms' productivity primarily by expanding the scale of firms, promoting technological innovation, and optimizing the allocation of factors. This paper provides direct evidence of automation's role in production using establishment-level data from the U.S. Census Bureau's Survey of Manufacturing Technology. The data indicate that more automated plants have lower production labor share and higher capital share, higher labor productivity, and a smaller fraction of workers in production who receive higher wages. To understand the connection between automation and total factor productivity, we estimate a CES model of production where a plant chooses the degree of automation by adjusting the relative weight of capital and production labor given their relative price. The results indicate that, in the presence of heterogeneity in the extent of automation, productivity estimates are more dispersed and skewed relative to Cobb-Douglas residuals, and that the choice of functional form affects the level of productivity estimates. Overall, broad and deep automation is concentrated in larger plants with higher total factor productivity and lower labor share, consistent with a role for automation in contributing to dispersion in input utilization and market share. Research examining the economic effects of urban polycentricity remains inconclusive. We contribute to this debate by developing a longitudinal framework in which changes in polycentricity in Chinese urban regions are linked with changes in total factor productivity. While we find no evidence of urban polycentricity being conducive to economic growth, we observe that the relationship depends on population size and the interactions between cities. We also find that cities borrow size from nearby cities in large urban regions, contributing to regional economic growth. The improvement of industrial Total Factor Productivity (TFP) is the basis for the high-quality development of China's economy. Sci-tech finance affects industrial TFP through screening and allocation mechanism, governance mechanism, and integration mechanism. Based on provincial panel data from 2009 to 2016, this paper constructs a comprehensive index of regional Sci-tech finance and explores the impact of Sci-tech finance on industrial TFP from two perspectives: differences in financial development levels and transmission paths. The results show that Sci-tech finance has a significant role in promoting the industrial TFP, but this promotion needs to meet certain financial development conditions. In high-level financial development areas, the promotion effect is significant. It is not linear. The effect is a threshold effect with the diminishing marginal efficiency. Sci-tech finance mainly promotes industrial TFP through boosting the industry's scientific and technological innovation capacity. Since the beginning of the 21st century, the new generation of information technology represented by the Internet has swept the world, driving a new round of scientific and technological revolution as well as industrial transformation. In this context, an in-depth discussion of the relationship between Internet development and Total Factor Productivity (TFP) is of great significance for promoting the high-quality development of the economy. Based on 2006 to 2020 annual reports of listed manufacturing enterprises in China, this paper takes resource allocation into the analysis framework of the impact of Internet development on manufacturing TFP to analyse the internal mechanism. The conclusions reveal that Internet development has not only a direct positive effect on manufacturing TFP but also a significant indirect promoting effect on manufacturing TFP by improving resource allocation efficiency. The resource allocation effect of Internet development on manufacturing TFP is mainly realized through the improvement of the allocation of labour factors. Furthermore, resource allocation can strengthen the nonlinear spillover effects of Internet development on manufacturing TFP. The shift towards digitalization is fundamentally transforming societies and changing lives. Meanwhile, many African countries are lagging behind on the dividends of accelerated digital technologies to address their developmental challenges. This is partly because of the dearth of evidence demonstrating how technological integration impacts on economic growth and poverty reduction. By relying on panel data for the period 2011–2021, this study empirically estimates the degree to which ICT adoption contributes to South Africa's economic competitiveness along four indicators: boosting productivity, accelerating business growth, increasing government operational efficiency, and creating opportunities for people. The data were analyzed using multivariate regression analysis. The findings indicated a strong positive correlation between the application of digital technologies and the improvement of business operations welfare improvement, and GDP growth. The findings suggest to policymakers the need to prioritize interventions that drive investment in digital infrastructure. Given the net positive effects of ICT innovations, it is also recommended that policymakers focus on building the ICT skills of South Africans, while ensuring a business-friendly environment that enables fast digital penetration in the economy. Effect of foreign direct investment (FDI) in services on carbon productivity is examined based on Chinese province-level panel data from 2007 to 2019. We control for income level, technical level and sectoral differences and find (ⅰ) in the full sample, service FDI has no significant effect on carbon productivity; (ⅱ) the effect of income inequality: service FDI flowing into high-income regions benefits the environment, while flows to low-income regions do not support the pollution-halo effect; (ⅲ) the effect of technology inequality: service FDI in regions with high technology levels reduces the carbon emission, while the environmental effect of service FDI is insignificant in low-technology regions; (ⅳ) industrial heterogeneity: FDI inflows to different sectors show different sensitivities to income level and have different impacts on carbon productivity. The result has a strong policy implication which will be helpful for the local governments to make policies with the aim to maximize the benefit from the pollution-halo effect of service FDI. This study investigates the impact of China's Digital Economic Policy (DEP) on industries' green innovation. It contributes to the existing literature on technology policy evaluation by challenging the assumption that this impact is similar across different industries. To achieve this, a conceptual framework is proposed, highlighting the asymmetric influence of the DEP on green innovation. By analysing panel data from 35 Chinese industrial subsectors, including 15 heavily polluting industries (HPIs) and 20 non-HPIs, between 2010 and 2020, this study reveals that the implementation of the DEP results in significantly higher levels of green innovation of HPIs as opposed to non-HPIs. The DEP's positive impact on green innovation of HPIs is primarily facilitated through industrial structure upgrading. Moreover, this study finds that the DEP has a greater effect on green innovation of HPIs with a lower state-owned ratio, higher total factor productivity or higher capital dependence. We study the relationship between technology spillovers from trade, domestic research and development (R&D) spending, and the growth in green total factor productivity within the agricultural sector. An empirical illustration is provided using a sample of 48 countries involved in China's Belt and Road Initiative from 2000 to 2019. Our findings highlight the important role of agricultural imports as a positive driving force behind green productivity growth, while the impact of domestic R&D expenditures on agricultural productivity lacks statistical significance in our sample. Furthermore, we find that trade-related technological spillovers drive environmentally sustainable agricultural growth in economically developed nations, but this effect is weaker in developing countries. Conversely, greater domestic investment in agricultural research and development programs helps promote green productivity growth in relatively rich countries, but its influence diminishes in middle-income and developing countries. This paper examines the effects of related and unrelated variety on total factor productivity (TFP) in Poland. Based on dynamic panel data regression results for Polish regions in 2003-2019, we find the positive effect of related variety and the strong negative effect of unrelated variety on TFP. This implies that regions with high related and low unrelated variety optimize TFP. Using the estimated TFP values, we tested for TFP convergence to the technological frontier using convergence tests that take into account significant differences in technological advancement across regions. We reject TFP convergence for all regions, but we find evidence of regional club convergence. The results of the convergence tests obtained for the simulation variants indicate that changes in related and unrelated variety structures may lead to the formation of convergence clubs with the regional technological leader. Under dual market and policy forces, industries vacated central business districts in Chinese cities, showing a decentralised layout. Using Chinese industrial firms' micro-data (2004–12), with township-level division as the unit, we describe urban industrial decentralisation and polycentric layout, exploring their impact on firms' total factor productivity (TFP). We found that: (1) industrial decentralisation negatively impacted TFP during the early and middle stages of urbanisation; (2) the polycentric layout can alleviate the firms' TFP losses caused by decentralisation; and (3) industrial decentralisation reduces diversified agglomeration, lowering TFP. Effectively improving the green total factor productivity (GTFP) of high-carbon enterprises is the key to adhering to green development and achieving the dual-carbon goal. This study examines the relationship between fintech and enterprises' GTFP based on an SBM-undesirable model with data from eight high-carbon industries in China from 2006 to 2020, and addresses the endogeneity issue with instrumental variables and propensity matching scores. It has been discovered that for every 1% increase in the level of fintech development in a city, there will be a 1.08% increase in the GTFP of local high-carbon enterprises; fintech boosts GTFP by reducing financing constraints and promoting green technological advances to promote the green transformation of high-carbon enterprises across the board; and the role of fintech in boosting GTFP is more pronounced in the midwestern regions, non-resource cities, cities with weaker environmental regulations, and non-state-owned enterprises. The quality of accounting information determines whether such information can serve as an effective basis for rational macroeconomic regulation and investment decisions. Studying accounting conservatism is crucial because it plays a pivotal role in shaping the macroeconomic landscape. This study examines the impact of accounting conservatism on the speed and quality of macroeconomic growth in emerging markets. Our findings indicate that regional accounting conservatism can hinder the speed of macroeconomic growth but enhance its overall quality. This effect is channelled primarily through aggregate corporate profits, total factor productivity level, and dispersion. Further analysis reveals that this relationship is more pronounced in regions characterised by high financial marketisation, weak government intervention, and well-developed intermediary markets. This study significantly enriches our understanding of the macroeconomic consequences of accounting conservatism in emerging markets and provides valuable insights into future macroeconomic trends at both the quantitative and qualitative levels. As an effective means of addressing environmental externalities, market-based environmental regulation inevitably has potential effects on the economy. Based on Porter's theory, we investigate how emission charges affect firms' total factor productivity and explore the moderating role of firms' breakthrough technological innovation. Our findings reveal the moderating effect of breakthrough technological innovation on the total factor productivity enhancement of the emission fee by looking at Chinese A-share listed firms with heavy pollution from 2011 to 2020. Our mechanism tests suggest that emission fees and breakthrough technological innovation increase firms' total factor productivity by enhancing firms' green innovation. In addition, our heterogeneity analysis shows that emission charges and breakthrough technology innovation effectively increase total factor productivity only for state-owned firms, and the effect on total factor productivity of non-state-owned firms is insignificant. Our findings suggest that implementing market-based environmental regulations and incentives for firms to embark on breakthrough technological innovation effectively increases firms' total factor productivity. For many, the business environment is regarded as the main factor determining changes in construction productivity. However, changes in a country's institutional regulation can contribute to the productivity changes of construction firms over the long term but are often overlooked in construction productivity research. To study the impact of institutional regulation on construction productivity, a sample of 55 public-listed construction Malaysian firms (2009–2020) is used as a case study to estimate total factor productivity (TFP) based on the Geometric-Young Index (GYI). Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) is then used to decompose the TFP-GYI into the technological, environment, technical, scale-mix, and statistical noise components. This is followed by the Generalized Method Moments (GMM) to model the impact of different institutional regulations on TFP and decomposed productivity components. The results indicate that the institutional regulation framework influences construction firms' TFP. Property rights and the rule of law (PRRL), and budget balance and change in wages (BBCW) have a positive impact on TFP, which largely influences technical efficiency. In addition to uncovering the impact of institutional regulation on construction productivity, namely capital availability and regulatory environment, it is concluded that institutional regulation plays a vital role in determining long-term construction firm productivity and needs to be considered by policymakers in formulating supporting incentives and policies. Sustained total factor productivity (TFP) growth of firms is essential to achieve sustained supply growth, which is necessary to solve the housing shortage and affordability problems. Existing productivity literature focuses on large firms whilst smaller firms make a significant contribution to the total supply. This paper investigates the productivity of 363 Indonesian real estate construction firms of medium and large sizes. We estimate Färe-Primont TFP measures under the meta-frontier framework, accounting for differences in the overall technologies under which each group of firms operates. Results deliver several important findings. First, large firms have higher productivity levels than medium firms, but average productivity levels are very low. Second, the productivity growth of large and medium firms is negative, which contributes to the growth of the housing shortage in Indonesia from 2012 to 2016. Third, in case of easier transfer or spill-over of production technologies between two firm groups, firms could enhance further their efficiency and productivity. Fourth, those factors related to branch numbers, legal structure and experience of doing business have positive correlations with the productivity performance of firms in both large and medium groups. Additionally, medium firms could gain higher productivity by diversifying their income. China's high-speed rail (HSR) construction provides an ideal 'quasi-natural experiment' in which regional issues are investigated. This study explores how HSR affects innovation efficiency and explores the mediating effect of urban form. Based on panel data comprising 280 cities in China from 2006 to 2016, this study uses a time-varying difference-in-differences method to analyze whether HSR affects regional innovation, and it explores the mediating effect of urban form. The results show the following. (1) HSR significantly promotes regional innovation. The parallel trend test shows that the treatment group and the control group have the same trend before HSR construction. (2) Knowledge spillovers are important manifestations through which HSR promotes regional innovation. HSR can significantly improve the level of total factor productivity and human capital. This article presents the methodology to examine the impact of foreign ownership on firm productivity using firm-level data of Japanese manufacturing firms from 2000 to 2016, which include 1,458 listed companies in Japan. Firm productivity is represented by total factor productivity (TFP), which is estimated by the Olley–Pakes semiparametric estimation method to minimize the simultaneity problem in production function estimation. In the estimation of the impact of foreign ownership on firm productivity, system GMM estimation is applied to address a possible reversal causality problem between foreign ownership and firm productivity. Based on the case of the manufacturing firms in Japan, this article shows that 1 percentage point increase in foreign ownership increases the firm productivity by 0.06 percent. The evidence of this article supports the positive impact of foreign ownership on firm productivity and further implies that the promotion of foreign investment could be a policy option to improve firm productivity. This paper investigates income convergence of Indian states in the post-reform period when markets played a greater role in resource allocation. We analyze stochastic convergence of relative per capita incomes of 19 states for the period 1994–2018 by employing a recently developed panel data approach controlling for structural breaks as smooth shifts. Smooth shifts are modelled using a more flexible Fourier approach that does not require identifying the number, date, and form of breaks. The empirical results, contrary to recent empirical findings, do not support evidence in favour of convergence in per capita income among Indian states. Poor infrastructure, lack of adequate financial development, and weak governance structure coupled with low total factor productivity growth seem to be responsible for the divergence of income. The findings suggest that development intervention in the post-reform period has neither been of the required order nor in the desired direction to help the lagging states to catch up with the leading ones. This paper investigates the evidence of productivity spillover from foreign-invested enterprises (FIEs) to local firms through horizontal, backward, and forward spillover channels, using establishment-level data from Vietnam in 2006–2017. The paper also considers the effects of foreign ownership types on the existence and magnitude of the productivity spillover. In addition, the paper examines whether the involvement of domestic firms in global production networks (GPNs) impacts on the nature of the spillover. The findings indicate that productivity from FIEs spills over to local firms through backward and forward channels, but not horizontal channels. Ownership structures of FIEs serve as an important determinant of productivity spillover: joint ventures tend to generate more significant positive productivity spillover to domestic firms than fully owned foreign firms. Environmental influence on the economy can be enhanced by consumption upgrading, transforming the key driver of economic development from supply to demand. This study constructs a model for consumption upgrading and applies threshold regression based on the susceptible–infectious–recovered (SIR) model, to explore the role of carbon emissions on high-quality economic development. The results reveal that the environmental input characterized by carbon emissions has an inverted U-shaped effect on high-quality economic development. A diminishing marginal rate of substitution of economic output demand to environment demand is observed during consumption upgrading. Misallocation of factors of production has been recently viewed as a promising explanation accounting for the large difference in total factor productivity (TFP) across countries. This article differs from previous studies by concentrating on interregional capital misallocation and by focusing on the role of fiscal decentralization in shaping misallocation. Using a city level panel data set, we measure intra-provincial and inter-city capital misallocation in China over 2003–2018. The empirical results based on provincial level panel data suggest that fiscal decentralization can lower inter-city capital misallocation while revenue decentralization performs better than expenditure decentralization. We further find that this positive effect is more significant and much larger when it is the market rather than government intervention that is driving the flow of capital. The observed low level of information and communication technology (ICT) usage among micro, small, and medium-sized enterprise (MSME) firms in many African countries may serve as a major constraint to their productivity. The productivity of service and manufacturing firms is impacted differently due to this low uptake of ICT. This paper seeks to examine the differential effects of ICT on MSMEs' productivity in emerging African economies, specifically Egypt and Nigeria. This study evaluates the effects of ICT on MSMEs' productivity across different sectors (services and manufacturing), by size and aggregated. The estimated results support the positive impact of MSMEs' website presence and use of email on their productivity, though the magnitude varies across different analyses and sectors. This appears to support the differential sectoral impacts of ICT on MSMEs' productivity across countries in emerging markets. Specifically, this study finds evidence for a higher impact of firms' website presence on productivity in the manufacturing sector than the services sector across emerging economies. The study, therefore, recommends that emerging markets economies that want to implement appropriate national technology policies to enhance their firms' productivity should always consider their differential effects on various sectors, as universal ICT policies may not achieve the desired objectives. We use the 2012 Green Credit Guidelines as a quasi-natural experiment and data from A-share listed companies from 2008–2020 to examine the effect of green credit policy on firm productivity and its mechanism of action. The results show that the green credit policy significantly inhibits improvements in firm productivity. The inhibitory effect still holds after a series of robustness tests, such as the difference-in-differences propensity score matching method, placebo test, and change in the timing of policy shocks. The mechanism of action test reveals that credit resource allocation, financing constraints and business credit are important channels through which green credit policy can reduce firm productivity. The heterogeneity test reveals that the inhibitory effect of green credit policy on firms' productivity improvements in restrictive industries is more significant for private firms, smaller firms, and inland regions. The policy implication of the findings of this paper is mainly to improve the green credit policy guarantee mechanism and policy implementation using the market as the main body, with the goal of realizing the synergistic development of policy implementation and environmental protection and of promoting rational resource allocation. This article considers the annual sample from 1984 to 2019 in a panel dataset of 20 emerging economies (i.e. Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Kuwait, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, the Philippines, Poland, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Thailand, and Turkey) given by Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI), to explore the effects of trade and financial globalization on total factor productivity (TFP) growth. It considers domestic credit to the private sector by banks as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP), labor force, and total gross fixed capital formation as a percentage of GDP as control variables in the total factor productivity function. The article considers the direct effects of trade and financial globalization. It also checks the moderating impact of domestic credit on TFP. The long-run estimation shows that domestic credit, labor force, and financial globalization reduce TFP growth, whereas investments and trade globalization enhance it. This research explores the impact of monetary policy on the growth rate of total factor productivity (TFPG) and innovation efficiency (IE) through panel data of 30 countries from 1983 to 2018 by the bias-corrected fixed-effect dynamic (BCFE) model. We find that tight monetary policy negatively impacts the growth rate of total factor productivity (TFPG) and innovation efficiency (IE), which is still valid after a series of robustness tests. We then perform sub-sample regressions, and the results show that countries with higher government efficiency, higher financial development, and stricter environmental policy can reduce the negative impact of tightening monetary policy on total factor productivity and innovation efficiency. Our research illustrates that a tightening monetary policy not only adversely impacts total factor productivity but also influences the main driving force of its growth-innovation efficiency. This paper investigates the impact of technological finance on high-quality economic growth. Based on data of 30 provinces (including autonomous regions and municipalities) collected between 2004 and 2018, this paper adopts the method of factor analysis to construct comprehensive indexes of technological finance, before calculating green total factor productivity as the index of high-quality development, using the CRS Multiplicative Model. Then it constructs the spatial SAC model, for analyses of the just-mentioned relationship based on the total sample of the nation as well as regional samples in eastern, middle and western China respectively. The results reveal that all samples, whether it be the total national samples or regional samples of eastern, middle and western China, demonstrate the positive influence of technological finance on high-quality economic development, with an obvious spatial spillover effect. We analyze the dynamic interaction of Japan's total factor productivity (TFP), GDP, stocks of domestic and foreign private and public as well as mission-oriented R&D, called GBARD in OECD statistics, in a vector-error-correction model (VECM) for Japan with stock data for the period 1987–2016. Permanent policy changes show the following main results: (i) GBARD as well as private and public R&D each encourage growth rates of the other R&D stocks and of TFP and GDP, and (ii) all have high internal rates of return; (iii) Japan's R&D policies affect and are affected by foreign R&D; in particular, Japan's public R&D has a positive impact on European private R&D, whereas other OECD countries' R&D has a negative one. The interplay between financial technology (FinTech) and real economy firms has garnered considerable attention. This paper explores the relationship and mechanism between FinTech and corporate zombification using the data of Chinese A-share listed firms in China from 2011 to 2021. The research findings reveal that FinTech significantly inhibits firm zombification, and FinTech breadth and depth both play a significant role in restraining firm zombification. Mechanism exploration indicates that, on the one hand, FinTech reduces friction in the financial market, inhibiting firm zombification by improving firm investment efficiency, especially alleviating under-investment. On the other side, FinTech indirectly affects the technological investment, production, and operation of firms, thereby inhibiting firm zombification by increasing their total factor productivity. Heterogeneity analysis suggests that the inhibitory effect of FinTech on corporate zombification is more pronounced for non-stateowned firms and small-sized firms, as well as those in manufacturing industries and highly competitive industries.
