Efforts to provide accessible eye care must consider the extent to which travel-distance may be a barrier for some communities. This study aimed to determine the distribution of — and geographic access to — eye health services in Aotearoa New Zealand. We further sought to identify communities who might benefit from provision of eye health services that were more geographically accessible. We obtained addresses of optometry and ophthalmology clinics from regulatory bodies and augmented this with online searches. Address locators were created using a Land Information dataset and geocoded using ArcGIS 10.6. A national population was derived using Statistics New Zealand's Integrated Data Infrastructure. We generated population-weighted centroids of each of New Zealand's 50,938 meshblocks and calculated the travel distance along the road network between each clinic and population (meshblock centroid). The proportion of the population living >50 km from each clinic type was calculated; as was the median, inter-quartile range and maximum distance across area-level deprivation quintiles in each district. A national population of 4.88 million was identified, as were addresses for 344 optometry, 46 public ophthalmology and 90 private ophthalmology clinics. Nationally and within each district, travel distance to optometry was shorter than to either type of ophthalmology clinic. The region of Northland — with a high proportion of the population Māori and in the highest quintile of area-level deprivation — had the furthest average distance to travel to optometry and public ophthalmology, while the West Coast region on the South Island had the farthest to travel to private ophthalmology. Several communities were identified where longer distances intersected with higher area-level deprivation. Most New Zealanders live within 10 km of eye health services. However, to achieve equitable eye health, strategies are required that make affordable eye health services accessible to communities for whom large travel distances intersect with high deprivation. To analyse the effect of the state screening program for glaucoma, funded by the Kazakhstan State programs for the health care system "Salamatty Kazakhstan" (2011-2015) and "Densaulyk" (2016-2019), on glaucoma diagnosis. This study involved 1,620,658 men and women 40-70 years of age. State screening for glaucoma includes measures of intraocular pressure (IOP) and corneal thickness. Data for glaucoma incidence were retrieved from the state statistics dataset. Studies of vulnerable age groups and ophthalmologists' availabilities were assessed, and correlations with glaucoma detection were determined. For the statistical analysis, MATLAB application package version R2017b (MathWorks, USA) was used. The number of registered glaucoma patients was 43,337 in 2010. In 2016, following the screening program, this figure increased to 68,195. A 49% increase in newly identified glaucoma cases from 70.8 (in 2010) to 124 (in 2016) per 100,000 population was determined. Thus, the sufficiency and effectiveness of the screening program were confirmed by the increase in the number of patients diagnosed with glaucoma, which also depended on age. A correlation between suspected glaucoma and age groups was exposed with the observation of a high number of cases in the older population. The state screening programs for glaucoma in the Republic of Kazakhstan constitute initial steps in the prevention of irreversible blindness and disability due to glaucoma. Traditional medicines are commonly used throughout the world, especially in Africa. About 13.2-82.3% of the population uses traditional eye medicine. These are forms of biologically based therapies, practices, or partially processed agents that are applied to the eye or administered orally to achieve a desired ocular therapeutic effect. To determine the prevalence and associated factors of traditional eye medicine use among adult ophthalmic patients attending the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital-Tertiary Eye Care and Training Center, Northwest Ethiopia, 2020. A cross-sectional study within the hospital was conducted on 502 newly admitted adult ophthalmic patients who were selected by using a systemic random sampling method from August 15 to 21 October 2020. Of the total (502) subjects, 93.1% of subjects participated in the study. From the total participants, 22.31% (112) (95% confidence interval (CI: 19-26%)) used traditional eye medicine in the past two years. Positive family history of traditional eye medicine use (Adjusted odds ratio (AOR = 11.1 (95% CI: 4.8-25.6)), availability of traditional healers (AOR = 3.7 (95% CI: 1.6-8.6)), residency in the rural (AOR = 24.9 (95% CI: 10.4-59.7)), family income of 300-1,500 adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 6.6 (95% CI: 1.9-22.9)), and ≥ 6 months (AOR = 8.5 (95% CI: 3.02-23.7) were significantly associated with traditional eye medicine use The driving issues for using TEM were the availability and costs of modern medicine. Inadequate public knowledge about eyes and eye care poses avoidable risks to vision-related quality of life. This study of eye care knowledge among Canadians extends earlier findings from focus groups. Perceptions about eyes and eye care were sought using a 21-item online survey and snowball sampling. Inclusion criteria were living in Canada and being at least 18-years old; eye care professionals and staff were excluded. Response frequencies were converted to percentages, with eye condition items analysed according to 'expected' or 'unexpected' eye impacts. Proportions selecting these impacts or 'unsure' were determined. There were 424 respondents: 83.0% aged 20-65 years and 69.6% female. Mismatches existed between perceived recommendations and behaviours for booking eye exams: within two years (86.7% vs. 68.4%) and symptom-driven (3.3% vs. 13.0%). First eye exams after age one year were deemed appropriate by 43.6%. Few respondents associated glaucoma with no symptoms (6.0%) or amblyopia with blurred vision (13.5%). A notable proportion incorrectly related tunnel vision with age-related macular degeneration (AMD, 36.8%) and cataract (21.9%). Identifying all 'expected' responses was unlikely for glaucoma (1.9%), amblyopia (6.7%), and cataract (12.0%). Most respondents identified no 'expected' effects for glaucoma (63.8%) and AMD (46.2%) and some 'expected' effects for cataract (59.5%) and amblyopia (72.6%). Selecting 'unsure' was 9-10 times more common among respondents choosing no 'expected' impacts than those choosing some. Awareness of thyroid-associated eye disease was lowest (32.4%) of seven conditions. Respondents were most likely to consult optometrists for routine eye exams, eye disease, diabetes eye checks and blurred vision but family physicians for red eyes and sore eyes. Respondents typically paid for their eye exams and eyewear but wanted government to pay. This study described the clinical presentations and proposed a diagnostic algorithm of fungal orbital infections based on 20 years of experience in a tertiary eye care center in Egypt. Medical Records of cases with orbital fungal infection from January 2000 to December 2019 were reviewed. The study included 45 patients. Mucormycosis was proven in 32 (71.1%) and aspergillosis in 13 (28.9%) patients. Thirty-five (77.8%) patients had predisposing factors mainly uncontrolled diabetes. Twenty-seven (60%) patients presented with orbital apex syndrome, 10 (22.2%) with orbital cellulitis and 8 (17.7%) with proptosis. The prognosis was generally poor (31.1% mortality, 8.88% exenteration and 11.1% self-evisceration). The proposed algorithm composed of six atypical clinical presentations mainly acute orbital apex and fulminating orbital cellulitis plus any radiological or microbiological findings. To study the clinical, microbiological profile and management outcomes of orbital abscess at a tertiary care center in South India. In a retrospective interventional case series, we reviewed all patients diagnosed with orbital cellulitis from 2000–2020. The data analyzed included demographic profile, clinical and radiological features, microbiological profile, and management outcome. A total of 921 cases of orbital and periorbital infections were reviewed. Seventy-two cases were diagnosed as orbital cellulitis. Thirty-four cases (47.22%) had radiological evidence of orbital abscess. The median age was 20.63 years. Three patients (8.82%) were neonates. A male preponderance was noted (23, 67.65%). Sinusitis (10, 29.41%) and diabetes (5, 14.7%), were the most common predisposing factors. Optic neuropathy was seen in 15 (44.11%) patients, cavernous sinus thrombosis in two patients (5.88%), and septicemia in one patient (2.94%) Multiple orbital abscesses were noted in 7 (20.59%) cases. All patients underwent surgical drainage. Methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus was the most common organism isolated in 14 patients (41.18%). Vision improvement or stabilization was seen in all except 3 (8.82%) Orbital abscess is a potential sight-threatening orbital infection. The infective process can spread and ascend up to involve cavernous sinus thereby becoming life-threatening. To explore individual and community factors associated with adherence to physician recommended urgent eye visits via a tele-triage system during the COVID-19 pandemic. We retrospectively reviewed acute visit requests and medical exam data between April 6, 2020 and June 6, 2020. Patient demographics and adherence to visit were examined. Census tract level community characteristics from the U.S. Census Bureau and zip code level COVID-19 related death data from the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office were appended to each geocoded patient address. Descriptive statistics, t-tests, and logistic regression analyses were performed to explore the effects of individual and community variables on adherence to visit. Of 229 patients recommended an urgent visit, 216 had matching criteria on chart review, and 192 (88.9%) adhered to their visit. No difference in adherence was found based on individual characteristics including: age (p =.24), gender (p =.94), race (p =.56), insurance (p =.28), nor new versus established patient status (p =.20). However, individuals who did not adhere were more likely to reside in neighborhoods with a greater proportion of Blacks (59.4% vs. 33.4%; p =.03), greater unemployment rates (17.5% vs. 10.7%; p <.01), and greater cumulative deaths from COVID-19 (56 vs. 31; p =.01). Unemployment rate continued to be statistically significant after controlling for race and cumulative deaths from COVID-19 (p =.04). We found that as community unemployment rate increases, adherence to urgent eye visits decreases, after controlling for relevant neighborhood characteristics. To describe the socioeconomic profile, awareness level and reasons for the delay in accessing timely eye care for cataract surgery in patients of lens-induced glaucoma (LIG). This cross-sectional observational study included all patients with LIG who presented to a tertiary eye care centre in central rural India between March 2019 to February 2020. Data were collected through a questionnaire. Out of the 731 patients included in the study, the majority were females (69.36%). The mean age of the patients at presentation was 62.66 ± 10.37 years. Only a few participants, 193 (26.40%) were aware of LIG. Lower socioeconomic profile, older age, female gender and illiteracy were found to be strongly associated with awareness about LIG (p <.001). Patients waiting for the winter season (58.27%) to get operated was the major reason for delayed presentation to the hospital. Other reasons for the delayed presentation were – need not felt (feeling that intervention was not necessary) due to good vision in other eye (14.36%), financial issues (11.63%), long travelling distance (7.11%), no caretaker (6.89%), medical illness (1.78%) and fear of surgery (0.55%). Delayed reporting for eye healthcare in patients of LIG is found to be multifactorial. Most patients preferred waiting for the winter season to get their eyes operated, which throws light on the mindset and ignorance of the patients in this part of central rural India. Dry eye disease (DED) is a multifactorial chronic condition with a broad spectrum of symptoms that can affect daily activities and quality of life. New treatment approaches that target more systematically distinct parts of the pathophysiology would present new potential to effectively regulate signs and symptoms of DED. In this review, a comprehensive list of device-based treatments has been provided, according to their mechanism of action. Given the variability and complexity of DED, adjuvant treatments should be considered as a boost for patients who do not respond to first-line therapy. Most of those devices primarily target meibomian glands, using heat or mechanical energy to restore normal meibum flow. Although several treatments have been discussed in this review, further studies are needed to identify new options, evaluate current therapies in randomized clinical trials more extensively, and identify which subtypes of DED could benefit from any given therapy. Nunavik Inuit patients, in Northern Canada, have a significant burden of refractive error. The frequency at which they access eye care is insufficient. This exposes children of this population to a substantial risk of refractive amblyopia. No data are available on eye health and services among Nunavik Inuit in Quebec, Canada. This study aims to describe the prevalence of ametropias, risk of refractive amblyopia, and eye health services uptake amongst a sample of Nunavik Inuit. Retrospective cohort using data from electronic records of the sole government-contracted eye team travelling to all 14 Nunavik villages, from 2006 to 2018. Some 26,541 examinations were analysed, with data from 6,341 patients (median age 27 years (IQR 30); 32% aged under 19 years; 60.3% female) representing 48% of the census population. Population weighted prevalence of ametropias was myopia 46.5% (95% CI 45.3 – 47.6), hyperopia 17.1% (95% CI 16.2 – 18.1), astigmatism 39.6% (95% CI 38.4 – 40.8) and presbyopia 30.0% (95% CI 28.9 – 31.0). Some 5.9% of patients aged 0–9 years present a risk of refractive amblyopia. Mean frequency of examinations for all ages was once per 4 years (95% CI 4.0 – 4.0) and for children aged 5 – 19 years, frequency was once per 4.8 years (95% CI 4.8 – 5.0). In 2018, 74% of patients who were prescribed spectacles purchased them, with a median time of procurement of 21 days (IQR 247, skewness 2.7). There is a high prevalence of ametropias amongst the clinical population of Nunavik Inuit. Most patients needing spectacles obtain them within a few weeks. To determine the prevalence of cataract and its relationship with some determinants in individuals above 60 years. Of 3792 subjects that were invited, 3310 participated in the study (response rate = 87.31%). All subjects underwent full optometric, slit lamp, and fundoscopic examinations. Then, their lenses were evaluated according to the World Health Organization cataract grading system after pupil dilation. Age- and sex-standardized prevalence with 95% confidence interval (CI) of nuclear, cortical, posterior subcapsular cataracts (PSC), any type cataract, and all lens change was 53.09% (49.80 to 56.35), 23.02% (20.87 to 25.32), 5.57% (4.62 to 6.70), 58.78% (55.65 to 61.83), and 72.49% (70.14 to 74.71), respectively. Any type, nuclear, cortical, and PSC cataracts, had a positive association with age and an inverse association with education. Moreover, the prevalence of cortical and PSC cataract had an inverse association with economic status. Among all variables, age was the strongest determinant for cataract and its subtype. This study found a higher prevalence of cataract compared to some previous studies such that about two-thirds of the geriatric population had cataract in the past or at the time of the study. Considering the association of cataract with variables such as economic status and education level, it seems that training and increased awareness and knowledge of the elderly population regarding the importance of eye care by physicians plays an important role in reducing the burden of cataract. The aim of this study was to determine the clinical presentations of uveitis at the University of Gondar Tertiary Eye Care and Training Center, North-West Ethiopia. A cross sectional study was performed at the center from August 2017 to July 2018. Study patients underwent complete ophthalmic evaluation and relevant ancillary tests. Data was gathered using a data extraction format and analyzed. A total of 105 eyes of 82 patients were studied. The mean age was 33.8 ± 14.8 years,53 (65%) were male and uveitis was unilateral in 72%. Anterior uveitis was the commonest, 57%, followed by Intermediate uveitis 21.7%. Sixty-six of the 105 (63%) of eyes were blind. Cataract was the commonest complication identified. This study showed that uveitis is prevalent in the working age group with a significant number of blindness. To report the pattern of noninfectious scleritis across a tertiary eye-care network. A three-year retrospective review of patients diagnosed with noninfectious scleritis was performed. Data were retrieved using diagnostic terms assigned to scleritis through the in-house eyeSmart-electronic medical record system. 1103 patients, with a mean age of 44.33 ± 14.38 years and a median follow-up of 199.5 days (range 32–685) were enrolled. Unilateral disease was noted in 85%. Diffuse anterior scleritis (n = 542, 42.51%) and nodular scleritis (n = 482, 38.12%) were the commonest subtypes. Systemic immune disease association was present in 65 (5.89%). Treatment at onset was topical corticosteroids (n = 372, 36.54%) followed by oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (n = 351, 34.45%), oral corticosteroids in 184 (19.04%), and immunomodulators in 32 patients (3.54%). This study depicts the pattern of various noninfectious scleritis in a large cohort of patients. Structured record keeping improves documentation in age-related macular degeneration; however, it may have a more limited effect on the management decisions of a group of already highly trained clinicians, especially in the context of other well-embedded clinical decision support tools. Structured record keeping has been associated with a range of advantages including improved history taking and communication, reduced number of unnecessary referrals, and enhanced diagnostic accuracy. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of a structured record keeping, quality improvement tool on recording, reporting and management congruency. A before and after retrospective record review study was performed in a single academic, intermediate-tier care institute in New South Wales, Australia. The structured record keeping tool intervention captured 31 items in addition to the prior pre-existing medical record: six items relating to historical risk factors, two items relating to patient activation, 13 items signifying core clinical signs, five items for change analysis and five items regarding the ongoing patient management plan. Two hundred medical records from 151 patients with age-related macular degeneration were analysed. There was a statistically significant improvement in the number of reports that explicitly specified the number of clinical structural risk factors (from 24 to 75%; Fisher's exact p < 0.001) and risk of progression to advanced disease (from 71 to 84%; p = 0.041); however, this documentation had no statistically significant effect on the report-recommended management plan and/or the final report-recommended review period. Disease-specific, structured record keeping improves the outgoing documentation of key clinical signs and is effective in prompting the transposition of these signs into a quantified risk progression score. Congenital inferior rectus hypoplasia and aplasia is a rare abnormality of the extraocular muscles, and it is the second most common after superior oblique muscle aplasia. It has been reported either in isolation or with coexisting ocular or systemic associations. We describe here cases of inferior rectus hypoplasia/aplasia, their clinical features, and surgical approach to achieve satisfactory outcomes. We retrospectively reviewed medical records from January 2009 to December 2020 of patients with vertical strabismus due to inferior rectus hypoplasia/aplasia at a tertiary eye care center. Those who underwent surgical intervention with an adequate follow up postoperatively were included in the study. Three patients who presented with congenital hypertropia and diagnosed of inferior rectus aplasia/hypoplasia and who underwent strabismus surgery were identified. Diagnosis was based on clinical examination and orbital imaging. Coexisting horizontal deviation was present in two patients. None of the patients had any other ocular, cranial, or systemic anomalies. All patients had isolated inferior aplasia/hypoplasia with normal other extraocular muscles on orbital imaging. Intraoperatively, ipsilateral superior rectus was tight in all patients. All underwent ipsilateral superior rectus recession, whereas two patients with large vertical strabismus required additional inferior oblique anteronasal transposition in the same eye. Satisfactory outcomes were achieved in all three patients without the need for resurgery. Moderate to large vertical A pattern strabismus and limitation of infraduction are common clinical findings. Orbital imaging helps not only in diagnosis but also in surgical planning. Weakening of antagonist superior rectus with anteronasal transposition of inferior oblique not only gives good surgical outcomes but also avoids potential complications related to vertical transposition of either horizontal rectus muscle. Knowledge of the typical eye health profile of patients experiencing social or economic disadvantage is useful for health care modelling. The aim of this work is to profile the ocular health and sociodemographic characteristics of Australian College of Optometry service users of all ages and to explore the relationships between key sociodemographic characteristics and eye health. For 3093 eye examinations, best-corrected distance visual acuity and mean spherical equivalent refractive error were tested non-parametrically by clinic category, remoteness area, number of co-morbidities, gender and indigenous status, also correlated against age and socioeconomic advantage/disadvantage. Covariates of interest were entered into linear mixed models of visual acuity and mean spherical equivalent refractive error, controlling for age. Risk estimates are reported for visual impairment (defined as ≤6/12 best-corrected distance visual acuity in one or both eyes) and ocular diagnoses. Visual impairment is more prevalent amongst service users examined in domiciliary settings. Increasing co-morbidities were associated with poorer best-corrected distance visual acuity. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander service users had lower visual impairment prevalence overall but proportionally fewer aged ≥50 years attended for eye care, compared to non-indigenous. Domiciliary eye examinations detect remediable visual impairment. Federal public health interventions delivered by the Australian College of Optometry for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander eye care appear effective but may not reach all aged ≥ 50 years; further research is required. Preventive eye care is a preferred practice that includes recommended regular eye examinations, which is not always followed. This study examined attitudes of ophthalmologists toward routine eye examinations, analyzed compliance with their own eye examinations, and described reasons for non-compliance. This was a cross-sectional study involving an online survey, sent to all members of the Israeli Ophthalmological Society (IOS) asking their personal opinions concerning routine eye care, self-performance of these tests, and reasons for non-compliance. A total of 243 responses were received (59% males, mean age 52 years) representing 40% of IOS members. 98% of respondents think that adults should be routinely screened for eye diseases, most commonly annually (52%) or every two years (36%); however, only 55% of ophthalmologists reported having themselves a routine eye check in the past 3 years, which is significantly lower than their spouse (68%, P = 0.003). Recommendations for routine eye examinations were always higher than their actual performance regardless of the responding ophthalmologists' gender, age or country of birth. Furthermore, female gender was found to be a negative predictor of having these examinations. Pupil dilation was performed in 38% of ophthalmologists' testing, even though 80% of them think it is necessary for a complete examination. 'Lack of time' (35%) and 'forgetfulness' (31%) were the main reasons provided by ophthalmologists as an explanation for not having regular eye testing. Ophthalmologists typically recognize the importance of preventive eye care, recommending periodic eye examinations for their patients; however, self-performance of these evaluations by the ophthalmologists themselves is much lower. This study analyzes the factors associated with eye care service utilization among Peruvians 50 years of age and older, measured as self-reporting of having undergone examination of visual acuity during the last 12 months. A secondary analysis of the 2019 Demographic and Family Health Survey (ENDES, for its acronym in Spanish) database was carried out. We estimated the weighted proportion of adults 50 years of age and older that reported having undergone a visual acuity examination in the previous 12 months and the frequency according to the variables of interest. Crude (PR) and adjusted prevalence ratios (aPR) of eye care service utilization were constructed using generalized linear models. Approximately 28.8% of Peruvians 50 years of age and older underwent a visual acuity examination in the previous 12 months. Having a higher education (aPR = 1.79; 95% CI: 1.33–2.40), health insurance such as EsSalud (aPR = 1.54; 95% CI: 1.28–1.87), a previous diagnosis of cataracts (aPR = 1.86; 95% CI: 1.67–2.09) and being part of the richest wealth quintile (aPR = 2.36; 95% CI: 1.74–3.20) were associated with greater utilization of eye care services, while living in the jungle was associated with a lower likelihood of utilization of these services. The unequal distribution of health resources within the territory and socioeconomic gaps among the population could explain our findings. To explore stakeholders' perceptions of a school-based vision programme (SBVP). We conducted 20 focus groups with 105 parents and teachers at schools in Baltimore, MD, that participated in a SBVP. Facilitators used a semi-structured interview guide to discuss participants' perceptions of the SBVP. Focus groups were audio-recorded, transcribed, and coded using inductive thematic analysis. Participant perceptions fell into three categories: benefits of school-based eye care, limitations of school-based eye care, and observation of impact. The majority of participants had positive comments about the programme; benefits included convenience (location, time, and cost), the comprehensive nature of the programme, the quality of the eyeglasses and ability to receive replacements, and a positive screening/exam experience. Limitations of programme impact were related to communication and organisation, the time to receive the glasses, missed instructional time, and uncertainty about screenings. Observations of impact included academic and classroom improvements, as well as visual and other health improvements. Parents and teachers reported mostly positive perceptions regarding the SBVP. Their appreciation for the convenience underscores that location, cost, time, and comprehensive services are crucial aspects for implementing a successful programme. To maximize impact, programs must also implement robust communication campaigns that integrate into the schools' workflow to help parents and teachers stay engaged in the process from start to finish. Eye drops play a prominent role in the treatment and/or management of many ocular diseases, however, they often have limitations. It is recognized that new therapies are needed in this area, to improve patient care. This manuscript discusses a novel class of materials, known as fluid gels, for their ability to improve ocular care. The paper focuses on how the materials address several key limitations to eye drops, such as longevity, lubrication, and delivery. Eye drops are a common source of treatment/management for many ocular diseases. However, lacking the complexity of the native tear, they often fail to hit the mark in terms of performance. In particular, the longevity of many drops and ocular lubricants is insufficient to keep active compounds in situ and/or offer adequate treatment. Fluid gels have high prospects in this area; as careful control over their microstructures provides a platform that can be applied to the ocular surface for in the order of hours. Not only can retention be finely tuned, but such materials also offer highly lubricating properties. Health education interventions are more commonly evaluated in hospitals or schools but rarely in the community. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of a community-based eye health education intervention on the eye health literacy in an adult Vietnamese population. Four hundred households from two districts of Ba Ria-Vung Tau province were selected by multistage systematic random sampling. A pretested questionnaire was administered at baseline and re-administered, after an eye health education intervention in two of the four communes. The other two communes acted as controls. The intervention included eye health education through community presentation, brochures, posters and loudspeaker. Fisher's exact test and logistic regression were used for statistical analysis. A total of 400 adults (mean age: 51.5 ± 14.5 years; range, 30–90 years) participated in the baseline survey and the repeat survey. Participants in the intervention group showed significantly greater awareness and knowledge of red eye preventive measures (Odds ratio range 2.1 to 4.1, p = 0.03 to 0.001) compared to control group. Participants in the intervention group were more than twice as likely to have heard of cataract (OR 2.3, p = 0.008), and more than three times as likely to be aware of cataract surgery (OR 3.1, p = 0.003) and know that the cataract blindness is reversible (OR 3.3, p = 0.002), than the control group. Multiple logistic regression showed that location, education, and eyeglasses ownership were the major factors associated with disease awareness. Using original archival and declassified documents from the Cold War era, the study appraises the accuracy of American, British, and West German intelligence proliferation assessments of India and Argentina. Contrary to pervasive scepticism, the available historical documentation shows that intelligence agencies did not habitually inflate their assessments of proliferation risks unless they anticipated arms race dynamics. Ischaemic stroke is a major disease burden as well as a leading cause of death. Early signs of ischaemic stroke can manifest in the eye, placing primary eyecare practitioners in an important position to identify patients at risk of ischaemic stroke and initiate suitable referral pathways. The vascular supply to the brain is reviewed with reference to vision including the various retinal signs and ocular symptoms associated with transient ischaemic attacks and ischaemic stroke. Using a range of clinical cases, the diverse clinical presentations of retinal embolic events, as well as other forms of vascular occlusion, are highlighted and the underlying pathophysiology is discussed. Endocrinopathies are prevalent diseases that typically affect multiple organs, and the eye and orbital tissues are often involved in endocrine disorders. Some conditions, such as diabetes and thyroid gland dysfunction, may cause serious eye pathology and even blindness. A clear insight into the pathogenesis of endocrinopathies and their ocular manifestations would enhance preventive and therapeutic measures and reduce the incidence of sight-threatening complications. The rheumatological diseases known as spondyloarthropathies (SpAs) are reviewed with respect to the current classifications of SpAs and from the perspective of ophthalmic practitioners. The focus is on the most common spondyloarthropathy, ankylosing spondylitis (AS), and the key symptoms, such as inflammatory back pain. The association with HLA-B27 and acute anterior uveitis (AAU) and the major clinical considerations for primary eye care practitioners are reviewed. Despite internationally recognized guidelines, amblyopia management varies among eye care professionals worldwide. Hence, we sought to investigate the practice patterns of amblyopia management and the factors associated with the decision to treat amblyopia among optometrists in Ghana. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among registered optometrists in Ghana from January 2020 to October 2020. Data collection was done through the administration of online questionnaires via e-mail (google form). The structured questionnaires included demographic information, mode, and scope of practice, diagnostic criteria, examination procedures, treatment modalities, and prognosis. A p value of less than 0.05 was deemed statistically significant. The mean (±SD) age of all the 168 respondents was 32.6 (±6.1) years (range: 24–50 years). The majority of the optometrists (64.9%) treated amblyopia in their practice; with the most prevalent being refractive amblyopia (68.2%), followed by strabismic amblyopia (27.1%), then form-deprivation amblyopia (4.7%). Most (76.1%) amblyopic patients presented with symptomatic squinting. The most common ocular and medical history was anisometropia (90.0%), and the most common diagnostic procedures were patient history, visual acuity, and refraction. Optical correction (88.3%) was mainly prescribed for amblyopia treatment, followed by patching (58.5%). Nearly half of the respondent (45.0%) reported good prognosis after amblyopia treatment. After statistical adjustment, female optometrists were significantly associated with decreased odds of treating amblyopia (AOR = 0.36, p =.004). Refractive amblyopia is the main type of amblyopia managed by optometrists in Ghana. Hence, optical correction is the primary treatment regime. This paper describes a study analysing eye care professional students' written reflections following their engagement with clients with low vision conditions. By embedding a reflective practice model (Schon's reflection-in-action and reflection-on-action) within a higher education curriculum, students' assumptions and beliefs were challenged. Analysis of fifty-two reflective essays were analysed using the Braun and Clarke's 6-phase process for inductive thematic analysis. This generated three themes: (i) Students' perceptions that visual limitations do not necessarily equate to a poorer quality of life; (ii) Extrinsic and intrinsic influences affect patient care; and (iii) Eye care professionals' role expands to holistic care. An additional outcome of this study supports embedding reflective practice activities within the curriculum. Cataract surgery is the most common surgery performed in the European Union (EU) annually. Analysis of Google Trends (GT) data could give European eye care providers useful information regarding interest in cataract surgery and potential barriers making patients unwilling to undergo surgery. Data were collected using GT for cataract surgery and the two most related queries, for each of 14 included countries from January 2004 to December 2018. Case volumes were extracted from the Eurostat report for the calendar years 2004–2018. The most related queries analysis demonstrated surgery outcomes, founding issues and understanding of the disease as potential factors for patients considering cataract surgery. Trend analysis showed that the total search volumes for "cataract surgery" gradually increased over the study period. Also, for "cataract", "after cataract surgery", "cataract surgery NHF" rising trends were revealed. Trends found for "cataract surgery price" and "cataract surgery complications" were inconclusive. Univariate linear regression analysis demonstrated statistically significant correlations between average annual search volumes of "cataract surgery" and the annual volume of cataract surgeries performed in included countries, according to Eurostat data (R2 = 0.889, p = <.001). In addition, univariate linear regression analyses revealed similar, statistically significant correlation for each the most related queries. To the knowledge of the authors, this is the first and the only analysis of GT data in the ophthalmology literature to date. Vision loss and blindness are among the top ten disabilities in the United States, yet access and utilization of eye care remains low. Vision Detroit aimed to address eye-care disparities via community-based screenings. By investigating burden of eye disease and barriers to eye-care utilization in an underserved urban community, we may direct efforts to improve access. Twenty-three screenings were conducted from March 2015-November 2017. Patient information gathered at screenings were demographics, medical and social history, eye exam/referral history, insurance status, primary care physician (PCP) status, and patient-perceived eye-care barriers. Three-hundred-eighty patients were screened, 42% African American and 51% Hispanic. Average age was 53 ± 16.4 years, 70% reported vision problems, 50% reported over two years of vision problems, and average habitual visual acuity in best-seeing eye was 20/37. Eye-care underutilization was reported in 61% of type-2 diabetics. Older age and PCP recommendations/referrals were associated with increased utilization in all patients. Insurance was the most common barrier (53%); of the 55% insured, 31% reported financial barriers. Employed patients were more likely than unemployed to report a time barrier (odds ratio = 1.76, 95% confidence interval 1.03–3.01). Those with high school or less education reported "unaware of need", "unsure where to go", "transportation", and "insurance" as barriers more often. Visual burden was pervasive, yet access was suboptimal. Financial, logistical, and awareness barriers were common. PCP referral and older age were associated with increased utilization. There is increasing focus on the value of real-world clinical registry data in multiple medical disciplines, including ophthalmology. However, disease-focused clinical registries that engage optometrists are rare. This paper introduces the Optometry Module of the Save Sight Keratoconus Registry (SSKR) and highlights the potential advantages it can offer to optometrists for improving their quality of patient care and for engaging in research. Optometrists are primary eye care providers and have a major role in providing clinical care to people with keratoconus. The SSKR system has been developed to collects high-quality information on essential clinical parameters including patient-reported outcomes (i.e., quality of life data). The real-world data from the Optometry Module of the SSKR can be analysed to obtain insights into contemporary optometry keratoconus practice, and be used to identify opportunities for improving clinical care. Optometrists' engagement with the registry supports reflective clinical practice through real-time benchmarking. Optometrists can use the registry system to track patient outcomes, and it provides a framework for educating patients about their keratoconus journey. The system also captures details relating to patient adverse events, with subsequent data analysis enabling risk factors for such events to be identified. In summary, the Optometry Module of the SSKR captures real-world clinical evidence that has the potential to inform practice improvement, facilitate safety surveillance and enable outcomes research in keratoconus, all with the ultimate intent of enhancing care for people living with keratoconus. Dry eye disease (DED), a multifactorial condition of the tear film and ocular surface, is one of the leading reasons for patients seeking eye care. Despite the multiple toxic ingredients of eye make-up products and their long-term application close to the ocular surface, few studies have analyzed their role in initiating and worsening DED. Females and the elderly experience the highest prevalence of DED and may be particularly vulnerable to the effects of eye make-up. The multifactorial nature of DED and common mechanisms behind several ocular surface diseases make it difficult to link a particular ingredient-driven mechanism to DED. Therefore, here, we list potential responses to eye cosmetics that may be involved in DED development. The first part of this review introduces the anatomy of the eye and DED, the second section explains the classification of eye cosmetic products, and the final part discusses the undesired effects under physical, pathogenic, and chemical insults. Hydroxypropyl-guar (HPG) is a thickening agent first added to lubricating eye drops in 2003. This agent, which enhances viscosity, has been used in the SYSTANE® family of lubricant eye drops (Alcon Laboratories, Inc., Fort Worth, TX, USA). HPG forms a partially linked gel with borate to prolong the retention of demulcents, such as polyethylene glycol and propylene glycol, on the eye. This helps to protect the ocular surface, thereby reducing the symptoms of dry eye disease (DED). The definition of DED has evolved with advances in research, leading to changes in HPG-containing eye care solutions. Clinical relevance: Understanding the quality of the commonly used clinical practice guidelines can help busy clinicians in selecting appropriate guidelines for evidence-based eye care for people with diabetes. Background: The National Health and Medical Research Council's (NHMRC) clinical practice guideline on diabetic retinopathy management has been widely used locally and internationally for over 10 years. However, the quality of this guideline has never been formally assessed. This study aimed to systematically evaluate the quality of the NHMRC guideline and compare it against other international guidelines. Methods: The 2008 NHMRC and another five established diabetic retinopathy management international guidelines (Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network, 2017; American Academy of Ophthalmology, 2019; American Optometric Association, 2019; Royal College of Ophthalmologists, UK, 2013, and Canadian Ophthalmologic Society, 2012) were examined using the Appraisal of Guidelines, Research and Evaluation (AGREE II) instrument. Scoring by four independent reviewers was aggregated into six domain and overall rating scores. Consistency among the reviewers was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Results: The AGREE II domain scores for the NHMRC guideline were: scope and purpose 72%, stakeholder involvement 64%, rigour of development 77%, clarity of presentation 96%, applicability 35%, and editorial independence 15%. The NHMRC guideline's overall score (5.3 of 7) was lower than that of most other guidelines. Compared to others, the NHMRC guideline scored well in clarity of presentation and rigour of development, but less well for editorial independence. The NHMRC guideline was the least current and a need to update it was recognised by all reviewers who identified key areas for improvement. Conclusion: The quality of the NHMRC guideline was comparable to most other established international guidelines. Several areas of strengths and weaknesses in this guideline were identified. Clinical relevance: The malignant potential of choroidal melanocytic tumours detected incidentally in the community is thought to be low, but this has not been assessed using a validated screening tool. An accurate characterisation of the malignant potential of these lesions has implications for resource allocation, service provision, education, and training. Background: MOLES (Mushroom shape, Orange Pigment, Large size, Enlargement, and Subretinal fluid) categorises tumours as 'common naevus', 'low-risk naevus', 'high-risk naevus', and 'probable melanoma'. The MOLES system recommends that patients with common naevi (score = 0) undergo review by a community optometrist every two years, ideally with sequential colour photography. For the remaining patients (score ≥ 1), specialist imaging and assessment are recommended, with referral triaged as non-urgent for patients with low-risk (score = 1) or high-risk naevi (score = 2) and urgent for patients with probable melanoma (score > 2). Methods: Lesions flagged as choroidal melanocytic tumours on retinal photographs taken during the Australian National Eye Health Survey were retrospectively analysed by an ocular oncologist. Each lesion was assigned a MOLES score and categorised as common, low-risk, high-risk or probable melanoma. Results: Seventy-seven choroidal naevi were identified. Seventy-five (97%) of the choroidal naevi were categorised as common naevi, with a MOLES score of 0. Two (3%) choroidal naevi had a score of 1 and diagnosed as low-risk naevi due to their size. No naevi had a score of 2 or more. Conclusion: All choroidal naevi detected in this nationally representative population survey were innocuous. This suggests that the vast majority of choroidal melanocytic tumours that are incidentally detected in Australia can be managed in primary eye care settings without the need for specialist referral. Clinical relevance: This novel clinical model is the first of its kind in Australia and was designed to help reduce unnecessary referrals into overburdened public systems by utilising pre-existing community-based resources. Background: The Centre for Eye Health (CFEH) is an intra-professional optometry-led care clinic offering an alternative pathway to traditional ophthalmology-based pathways (public hospital clinics or private practices) for 'at-risk' patients requiring ocular imaging, diagnostic and management services. This study evaluates the CFEH integrated eye-care model in the identification of chronic eye diseases within the community. Methods: A retrospective random clinical audit of over 750 medical records of patients referred to the CFEH between July 2016 and June 2019 was conducted. Demographics of patients, referral type, final diagnosis and recommended management plans were extracted from this subset. Clinic key performance indicators (referral turnaround time, and net cost per patient appointment) were also extracted. Results: Of the 755 referrals associated with the audited records, 77.4% resulted in the identification of patients with or at-risk of developing eye diseases with 73.5% of this cohort requiring ongoing monitoring at CFEH or referral to ophthalmology. Although the CFEH model is not designed to diagnose or manage acute conditions, 1.5% of patients in this pathway required same day ophthalmological or medical intervention. The cost per patient was equivalent to hospital eye departments costs. Conclusion: This integrated care pathway has the potential to reduce unnecessary referrals from optometrists to hospital ophthalmological service by offering a safe and effective alternate pathway. The majority of patients seen within this pathway were able to be monitored within optometry-led services. This is a unique clinical model utilising inter-professional referrals within optometry which has the potential to reduce preventable blindness within the community through the early detection of eye diseases. Cultural belief in Ethiopia showed that strabismus can be caused by exposure to sunlight during infancy, an outrage from God, and looking sideways. In addition, Ethiopians also believe that strabismus can resolve by its self and is a sign of good luck. Due to these reasons many patients with strabismus come to eye care clinics after developing amblyopia. This study aimed to assess the level of attitude and related factors toward strabismus among adults living in Gondar town, Northwest Ethiopia. A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample size of 634 adults from April 9 to April 23, 2019. Data were collected using a pretested structured questionnaire through face-to-face interviews, and the study participants were chosen by applying a multistage random sampling technique. Data were entered with EPI info version 7 and imported into SPSS version 20 for analysis. Frequency, statistical summary, and cross-tabulations were used for the descriptive analysis of the entered data. Binary logistic regression was fitted, and all independent variables with a P-value of less than 0.2 in the bivariable analysis were entered into a multivariable binary logistic regression. Variables with a P-value of less than or equal to 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Respondents who answered greater than or equal to the median score of attitude-related questions were designated to have a favorable attitude toward strabismus. In this study, 602 adults were participated with a response rate of 94.9% and the median age of the participants was 33 ± 14 years. The overall proportion of favorable attitudes toward strabismus was 71.8%. Having secondary school as an educational status (AOR = 2.8 (95% CI: 1.2, 6.4)) and heard about strabismus (AOR = 7.4 (95%CI: 3.7, 14.9)) were positively whereas being unemployed (AOR = 0.3(95% CI: 0.1, 0.7)) and high monthly income (AOR = 0.5(95%CI: 0.3, 0.9)) were negatively associated with a favorable attitude regarding strabismus. Eighty-five percent (88.5%) of participants agreed that early treatment of strabismus had a better outcome. Besides, 57.6% of participants have agreed that untreated strabismus can cause amblyopia. About three fourth of the study participants had a favorable attitude toward strabismus. Educational status, heard about strabismus, occupation, and monthly income were significantly associated with a favorable attitude toward strabismus. Most of the study participants agreed that untreated strabismus can cause poor cosmoses. Purpose: To describe the demographics and clinical characteristics of pediatric uveitis and scleritis at a tertiary eye care center.Methods: Clinical records of children with either uveitis or scleritis that presented between January 1989 and January 2016 were reviewed retrospectively.Results: Seventy-three patients were identified. Fifty-four had uveitis and 19 had scleritis. Posterior uveitis was the most common (27.8%), followed by intermediate uveitis (25.9%), panuveitis (25.9%) and anterior uveitis. Majority were noninfectious uveitis (37.0%), and 29.6% were idiopathic. Common associations were sarcoidosis (14.8%), HLA-B27 haplotype (9.3%) and toxoplasmosis (7.4%). Posterior scleritis was more common (94.7%) than anterior scleritis and majority were idiopathic (68.4%). Delayed patient presentation and presenting visual acuity worse than 0.3 LogMAR were associated with poor visual outcome (p = .03; OR = 0.17; 95% CI, 0.03-0.84 and p = .007; OR = 0.09; 95% CI, 0.02-0.52 respectively).Conclusion: Majority had noninfectious etiologies. Purpose: To report the clinical profile of cataract and its surgical management in a scleritis cohort from India. Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of medical records of 39 eyes of 32 consecutive patients with scleritis who underwent cataract surgery in a tertiary eye care institute. Results: The mean age at presentation was 50.9 ± 11.1 years and 65.6% of the patients were female. Five patients (15.6%) were ≤ 40 years of age. Necrotizing scleritis (56.4%) was the most common subtype of scleritis in this cohort followed by diffuse anterior scleritis (28.2%), nodular scleritis (12.8%). The preferred incision for phacoemulsification was clear corneal in 30 eyes (77%). In the immediate post-operative period, four eyes (10.2%) developed severe corneal edema, one eye had descemet membrane detachment. Anterior chamber reaction was observed in 18 eyes (46.1%). Fifteen eyes (38.4%) developed raised intraocular pressure and two required surgical intervention after 3 months of cataract surgery. Early posterior capsular opacification was observed in 5 eyes (12.8%) and cystoid macular edema in 2 eyes (5.1%). Conclusion: In addition to providing a distinct pattern of cataract, index study showed that long-term control of scleral inflammation prior to the cataract surgery remains the primary requisite for the successful outcome. Diabetes is a public health challenge in Canada with a disproportionate number of Indigenous people, especially women, living with diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy is a diabetes ocular complication and a common cause of blindness in Canadian adults. Many individuals living with diabetes do not have regular diabetic eye screening. This study sought to determine the diabetic retinopathy awareness and eye care behaviour of Indigenous women with diabetes or at risk of diabetes. This was a quantitative study among 78 Indigenous women (First Nations and Métis) in Saskatoon, Canada. Data on diabetic retinopathy awareness and eye care behaviour were collected via a knowledge, attitude, and practice survey. Participants had high diabetic retinopathy practice mean scores (32.16) than knowledge (30.16) and attitude scores (22.56). Sub-group analysis showed a significant difference in knowledge scores between age, education, and diabetes status, and differences in practice scores between age and education. Although our regression analysis indicated an association between education and knowledge scores (p = 0.024), and diabetes status and attitude scores (p = 0.044), the associations are not conclusive. Indigenous peoples with or at risk of diabetes may benefit from targeted interventions on diabetes and eye care, which could improve eye care awareness and behaviour. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To analyze clinical profile of the patients with scleritis in a tertiary care eye hospital in Bangladesh. Method: Retrospective analysis of 111 eyes of 79 patients of scleritis between January 2012 and May 2018. Result: The study observed a relative younger mean age and equal gender distribution. Diffuse anterior scleritis (43%) was the most common type of scleritis. Rheumatoid arthritis (10%) was the most common systemic disease followed by granulomatosis with polyangiitis (5%) and tuberculosis (2.5%). Purpose/Aim: In the United States, high rates of vision impairment and eye disease disproportionately impact those who lack access to eye care, specifically vulnerable populations. The objective of our study was to test instruments, implement protocols, and collect preliminary data for a larger 5-year study, which aims to improve detection of eye diseases and follow-up eye care in vulnerable populations using community health workers (CHW) and patient navigators. In the study, trained CHWs conducted vision screening and patient navigators scheduled on-site eye exams and arranged appointments for those referred to ophthalmology to improve adherence to follow-up eye care. Materials and Methods: Eligible individuals age 40-and-older were recruited from the Riverstone Senior Center in Upper Manhattan, New York City. Participants underwent on-site vision screening (visual acuity with correction, intraocular pressure measurements, and fundus photography). Individuals who failed the vision screening were scheduled with an on-site optometrist for an eye exam; those with ocular pathologies were referred to an ophthalmologist. Participants were also administered the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire-8 (NEI-VFQ-8) and Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths, and Injuries (STEADI) test by community health workers. Results:Participants (n = 42) were predominantly older adults, with a mean age of 70.0 ± 9.8, female (61.9%), and Hispanic (78.6%). Most individuals (78.6%, n = 33) failed vision screening. Of those who failed, 84.8% (n = 28) attended the on-site eye exam with the optometrist. Ocular diagnoses: refractive error 13/28 (46.4%), glaucoma/glaucoma suspect 9/28 (32.1%), cataract 7/28 (25.0%), retina abnormalities 6/28 (21.4%); 13 people required eyeglasses. Conclusion: This study demonstrates the feasibility of using CHWs and patient navigators for reducing barriers to vision screening and optometrist-based eye exams in vulnerable populations, ultimately improving early detection of eye disease and linking individuals to additional eye care appointments. Clinical Relevance: This study was carried out to provide advice to eye care practitioners on those soft disposable contact lenses that comply with the Class 1 or Class 2 requirements of the international standard ISO 18369 for ultraviolet radiation protection.Background: This study was carried out to provide advice to eye care practitioners on those soft disposable contact lenses that comply with the Class 1 or Class 2 requirements of the international standard ISO 18369 for ultraviolet radiation (UVR) protection and to validate any claims made. It is intended to be used when a patient needs or requests UVR protection. A revised ISO 18369-3 was published in 2017. There is no Australian adoption nor equivalent.Methods: The direct spectral transmittance of three specimens of each of the twenty soft disposable contact lens types available in Australia in 2018 was measured in saline in a quartz cuvette with a dual beam spectrophotometer from 200-780 nm. Transmittance values for each material were averaged and scaled according to a single measurement of its transmittance in the visible spectrum (380-780 nm). Based on the ISO 18369-3:2017 criteria, lens materials were denoted as Class 1, Class 2 or non-UVR protectors. This classification was compared with any claim made by the manufacturer.Results: All claims of the manufacturers for Class 1 or Class 2 were valid. There were no examples of any missed opportunity to make a claim. Some claims were so general as to be untestable. Some numerical claims appeared to hide that only a Class 2 claim could be made.Conclusions: Claims of Class 1 or Class 2 were found to be appropriate. There were no missed opportunities to claim. UV protection claims that were not in the ISO 18369-3 format may be taken as Class 2 compliance but not Class 1 compliance. 1) To assess the utility of performing eye screenings for healthy basketball players. 2) To describe the traumatic injuries sustained by competitive college basketball players. The eye screening examinations of the Duke University Men's Basketball players over six seasons were reviewed retrospectively. Traumatic basketball-related eye injuries amongst Duke University Men's Basketball players over 16 seasons were also reviewed and described. Forty-four total players underwent screening examinations. Thirteen (29.5%) of athletes had uncorrected or under-corrected refractive errors. One athlete was found to have a severe monocular visual deficit secondary to a traumatic injury in childhood, which was significantly mitigated by a contact lens referral. Eight traumatic ocular injuries in eight different athletes, 8.6% of the total roster players in this interval, required ophthalmologic consultation. Most injuries, 7/8, resulted in no permanent visual impairment. However, two severe episodes of injury required operative intervention, and one episode involving a giant retinal dialysis and traumatic optic nerve head avulsion caused severe, permanent visual loss. Most injuries did not result in significant competition time loss, with a median time loss of 5 days (range 0 to 240 days). Screening eye examinations in healthy athletes are beneficial for the identification and treatment of refractive errors. Traumatic basketball-related eye injuries are common and result in a wide array of injuries. Although most basketball-related eye injuries do no result in permanent visual loss, given the potential for severe injury, many basketball-related eye injuries require expert ophthalmic consultation. Introduction: The COVID-19 contagion curve is steeply increasing again worldwide; however, this time we face the emergency with different knowledge.Areas covered: In this review article, we present international guidelines and updated literature merged with our experience from hospitals in Bergamo, the epicenter of the first European COVID-19 outbreak, and provide a protocol tailored for ophthalmology professionals for organizing ophthalmology services for the second-wave of COVID-19 pandemic, to satisfy ophthalmic care needs while minimizing viral spread. Results from this strategy are discussed. We have developed a protocol that can balance safety, costs and quality.Expert opinion: Re-shaping ophthalmology practice resulted in higher costs and longer working times, but this is necessary to ensure safety. Introduction: Systemic acetazolamide is an efficacious adjunct to topical therapy to lower intraocular pressure (IOP) in glaucomatous eyes. This article aims to provide a comprehensive review for how best to use the agent in ophthalmic practice. Areas covered: This article will review the history, mechanism of action, methods of observing efficacy, indications for IOP lowering, side effects, allergy information including discussion of limited cross-reactivity between antimicrobial and non-antimicrobial sulfonamides, formulations, dosing and monitoring of acetazolamide. To select articles for this review, an electronic search was conducted using the PubMed database and cross-referencing was conducted for relevant literature. Expert opinion: The benefits of oral carbonic anhydrase inhibitor therapy can outweigh the risks in many circumstances. It is important that eye care practitioners work together with a patient's primary care practitioner to monitor for and mitigate risks. Greater education is needed with regard to the allergy profile of these powerful agents. Preventable and treatable visual impairment affects more than 1 billion people worldwide. Rwanda has an estimated visual impairment prevalence of 3.7% amongst the 12 million inhabitants. Around one third of this demand could be addressed through a more integrated and collaborative approach, particularly in primary eye care services. Healthcare students, therefore, need to be prepared for collaborative practice in eye health through interprofessional learning. Interprofessional workshops were piloted with ophthalmic clinical officer, medical clinical officer, nursing and medical students from the University of Rwanda. The aim was to promote collaborative practice by teaching students how to assess and recognize common eye conditions using the Arclight; a low cost, solar powered, portable ophthalmoscope designed for use in low resource settings. Students reported that the workshop content was relevant to all professional groups. They valued the opportunity to learn interprofessionally, share their knowledge and perspectives, and acquire new knowledge and skills together. This pilot helped to identify the most relevant skills and knowledge for future interprofessional eye health training. It enabled the facilitators to reflect on how best to maintain a balance between a quality interprofessional experience and the more specific eye health related learning objectives.
