The present study sets the psychological type profile and temperament of 190 Catholic priests serving in England, Wales, and Ireland alongside the profile of 1,298 Catholic priests reported by Ruppart in 1985. In the current study 68% of priests preferred introversion, 61% preferred sensing, 53% preferred feeling, and 84% preferred judging, confirming the findings of other recent studies of Catholic priests in Australia and Italy of a trend towards introversion, sensing, and judging, and away from feeling. In the current study 55% presented as Epimethean Temperament (SJ) and 21% as Apollonian Temperament (NF), also confirming other recent studies that report a move toward the SJ temperament and away from the NF temperament. Foetal surgery to repair open spina bifida before birth improves infant motor function and reduces ventriculoperitoneal shunt requirement. Alongside the development of the first UK foetal surgery service, we surveyed the knowledge and acceptability of this treatment to healthcare professionals in the UK and Ireland via an electronic questionnaire. Ninety-eight (98) responses were received: MFM clinicians (21), midwives (20), paediatric neurosurgeons (17), obstetricians (15), neonatologists (13), theatre nurses (11) and commissioners (1). Overall 70% of responders agreed with the concept that foetal surgery improved neonatal outcome in selected cases; although, only 41% of paediatric neurosurgeons agreed. A variety of concerns were expressed, the most common being the lack information regarding mid- to long-term effects on the child and mother.In offering this new service, it is important that we are cognisant of healthcare professional concerns and address them by applying internationally accepted criteria for foetal surgery, emphasising patient choice and collecting long-term data.Impact statementWhat is already known on this subject? Foetal surgery is a potentially controversial intervention, which is increasing in availability globally. Foetal surgery is now available in the UK on a charitable-funding basis. Prior to starting a UK foetal surgery service, we assessed the attitudes and knowledge of healthcare professionals in the UK towards this new surgery.What the results of this study add? Overall the majority of healthcare professionals agree with the concept that foetal surgery improves neonatal outcome in selected cases, but a variety of concerns exist, the most common being the lack of information regarding mid- to long-term effects on the child and mother. There is a need to ensure public health policies are robustly evaluated to establish their benefits and harms on the population and subgroups. We aimed to assess the comparability of Northern Ireland (NI) and Republic of Ireland (RoI) alcohol-related data to determine their suitability for evaluating the effectiveness of alcohol policies on alcohol consumption, sales, and related outcomes. A comparability analysis of NI and RoI alcohol-related hospital admissions, deaths, consumption, sales, and crime administrative and survey data was undertaken. Data sources were compared, where applicable, in terms of coding systems, population coverage, definitions, quality, response/completion rates, and question similarity. The NI and RoI consumption and sales data were found not to be comparable enough for use in a natural experiment study; comparability for hospital admission data was acceptable. Key barriers to comparability included variations in population coverage and lack of overlap in questionnaire topics. Data access issues made it difficult to fully determine data comparability for alcohol-related crime and deaths. By contrast, NI alcohol-related data were more comparable with other UK countries, making comparisons for the purpose of policy evaluation possible. Objectives:To identify caregiver profiles of persons with mild to moderate dementia and to investigate differences between identified caregiver profiles, using baseline data of the international prospective cohort study Actifcare. Methods:A latent class analysis was used to discover different caregiver profiles based on disease related characteristics of 453 persons with dementia and their 453 informal caregivers. These profiles were compared with regard to quality of life (CarerQoL score), depressive symptoms (HADS-D score) and perseverance time. Results:A 5-class model was identified, with the best Bayesian Information Criterion value, significant likelihood ratio test (p< 0.001), high entropy score (0.88) and substantive interpretability. The classes could be differentiated on two axes: (i) caregivers' age, relationship with persons with dementia, severity of dementia, and (ii) tendency towards stress and difficulty adapting to stress. Classes showed significant differences with all dependent variables, and were labelled ‘older low strain’, ‘older intermediate strain’, ‘older high strain’, ‘younger low strain’ and ‘younger high strain’. Conclusion:Differences exist between types of caregivers that explain variability in quality of life, depressive symptoms and perseverance time. Our findings may give direction for tailored interventions for caregivers of persons with dementia, which may improve social health and reduce health care costs. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

In Ireland and the UK it is accepted practice that agencies with formal responsibility for delivering school examinations allow examination candidates, and in many cases their teachers, to see their examination papers once they have been marked. Returned papers can carry various pieces of information; as well as the total score given for a performance, additional information is included in the form of the annotations left on the examination paper by the marking examiner. As far as we know there has been no research into how this information affects those who come into contact with it. The study uses teacher interview and survey data to explore whether a sociocultural approach to analysis can illuminate the factors that might influence their interpretation of those annotations. These analyses suggest that a key influence on the valid interpretation of an examiner's annotations is a teachers' involvement in examining activity. The analyses support further conceptualisation that these teacher-examiners' interpretative capacity is related to their positioning in a boundary zone between two different activity systems. Background. Dealing with work related stress is a declared priority of European Union mental health policy. A particularly under-researched sector in this regard is the community vocational support sector for people with mental health and intellectual disability problems. Aims. To report on the organisational profile of the vocational support and rehabilitation sector forpeople with mental health and intellectual disabilities as this relates to occupational stress, in five European countries (Austria, Ireland, Italy, Romania and UK). Methods. A sector profile questionnaire was distributed to representative organisations in five countries and a short face-to-face survey was conducted with 25 local managers (five from each country) to draw up a profile and facilitate a comparative description and analysis. Results. It was found that there is no national and European data collected at any level in this sector upon which to base effective policy interventions to combat occupational stress specific to professionals working in this sector. Results indicate that the sector in a number of the countries sampled does not have effective mechanisms in place to deal with occupational stress. Conclusion. Developing effective transnational occupational stress management policy that supports staff working in this sector and measuring its success is greatly impaired by a failure to effectively define the purpose of the sector and collect and collate national data to support it. Peat mass movements are relatively common geomorphological phenomena in the uplands of Ireland and parts of northern Britain. Geomorphological mapping of many peat landslides has led to the identification of different types of failures based on repeatedly occurring morphological and geometric characteristics. Furthermore, much of the recently enhanced understanding of mass failures in peat deposits, published in several recent reviews, has been obtained through detailed analysis of the geomorphological maps produced from the new field surveys that are herein presented together for the first time. The map that is the focus of this paper is a composite figure that shows geomorphological maps of the majority of extant bogflow and bog slide types of peat mass movements in Ireland, together with two peat flows and a large peat slide that has not previously been described. The paper examines the methodology used to create the maps, and highlights the value of the maps in presenting potentially critical evidence that may not be discernible by field inspection alone. Creating geomorphological maps of peat landslides from field sketches provides highly satisfactory results if selected features are geo-referenced using a hand-held GPS at an average frequency of around once for every 30 m of source area perimeter or other linear component of a landslide. In the case of very large failures and very old and degraded failures, lower frequencies of GPS points can be tolerated because critical morphological evidence appears to scale-up with failure size and smaller-scale morphological details are lost with increasing failure age due to natural degradation of the disrupted peat. A number of recent, high-profile incidents involving loss or damage to cryopreserved material held in IVF units or sperm storage centres have highlighted the need for centres to carefully review their cryostorage practice and take action. Critical disasters involving lost or damaged patient material, although high profile, are still thought to be rare, and there has been concern that we should ensure that any response is proportionate to risk. However, as no regulators, manufacturers or similar professional disciplines have collected information in the long term, our knowledge of the true incidence of such adverse events is extremely poor. Recognizing the need for some solid data, the UK Association of Clinical Embryologists (ACE) conducted a survey on the subject, at its joint meeting with the Association of Irish Clinical Embryologists (ICE) (January, 2006). Questions were asked in relation to the risk of: injury to personnel; and potential loss of and potential damage to stored material. The number of serious and not so serious adverse events/situations relating to both staff and sample safety are discussed in detail. The incidence of problems was certainly higher than we had imagined; the lack of general training and awareness amongst our staff is a serious cause for concern, and appears to leave the industry vulnerable. Moreover, the survey highlighted the need for a coordinated approach to the collection of more detailed information both prospectively and retrospectively. Regulators, manufacturers, allied professional bodies and, more importantly, centres should be encouraged to share both recent and historic data relating to adverse events, in order that accurate risk assessments can be made in future.
