This article discusses Indonesia's largest Muslim organization, the Nahdlatul Ulama (the NU), in campaigning Islam Nusantara, the NU's version of moderate Islam, and enacting religious agency in Germany. The NU has expanded its networks by establishing special branches (PCI NU) across the globe. In Germany, the special branch was established in 2011. This paper specifically investigates organizational projects, religious practices of the NU people, and the campaign of moderate Indonesian Islam. My analysis of the results of ethnographic fieldwork consisting of in-depth interviews, casual chats, and hang-outs in the organization's meetings and gatherings in Germany and Indonesia shows that PCI NU Germany is extending its transnational networks, claiming its religious agency, and strengthening its version of moderate Islam overseas in an effort to make its voices heard within Islamic communities and broader public in the host country and maintain socio-religious connections with the home country. In Germany, people categorised as 'unaccompanied minor refugees' have special rights, entitlements and possibilities. It is, for example, legally complicated to deport them. Since age is such a crucial marker of difference, the age statement of individual migrants is often scrutinised in their registration process through administrative, pedagogic and forensic practices. This ethnographic analysis of forensic age estimations in Hamburg, Germany, shows that one cannot simply read age from a young migrant's bones. Rather, an individual's age is enacted in a practice whereby age is not only dependent on a body, but also on the specific bureaucratic and scientific traditions, technologies and standards involved in assessing it. Thus, citizenship practices based on age not only draw on 'the body', but also – and more crucially – on varied scientific and bureaucratic practices. I propose the concept of 'biorelational citizenship' to grasp these shifting relationalities of the body in citizenship practices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study moves in the space between two fields: science and technology studies (STS) and childhood studies; it thus belongs to the broader STS literature that investigates everyday practices outside the laboratory. The interpretation of ethnographic and bibliographic data on contemporary cardiovascular and obesity prevention in German kindergartens makes evident that when knowledge travels from biomedical laboratories to the preschool, then psychology comes into play! Bodies of knowledge such as behavioural or cognitive theories shape prevention and intervention practices, which could be seen as originally resulting from biomedical findings and trends. Accompanying this development is a change in the primary sciences that deal with childhood: these are no longer pedagogy or developmental and educational psychology (at least in their traditional forms), but ‘developmental science’. All this shapes contemporary childhood in quite normative ways. It thus remains an open question what non- or less normative institutional practices and bodies of knowledge could look like. This article is an in-depth exploration of local efforts to build a transnational sense of cultural citizenship in the border cities of Frankfurt(Oder), Germany and Słubice, Poland. Based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted between 2004 and 2006, this article focuses on the various strategies and activities of ‘Słubfurt’, a community-based NGO with the goal of redefining Słubice and Frankfurt(Oder) as a unified social space. In pursuing this goal, Słubfurt engages with European Union-wide social and political dynamics aimed at enhancing international cooperation and integration by de-emphasizing national borders and promoting a transnational sense of ‘European’ identity. This article therefore addresses the interplay between local cultural politics and the tactics and techniques of supranational forms of governmentality, and examines attempts to establish new symbols, events, practices and traditions that support the development of a cross-border community identity and cultural citizenship within the two cities.
