This study focused on how adopted adults who have reunited with at least one birth family member experienced identity shifts related to their original birth certificates (OBCs). Framed by the Communication Theory of Identity (CTI), 50 adopted adults discussed their experiences related to their OBCs and how their identities are connected to this symbol through three of the layers of CTI, the personal, enacted, and relational layers. Participants discussed the presence of an ambiguous and unsolvable identity that interpenetrated with their other identity layers. Findings extend CTI to include an additional layer for adoptees – phantom identity – which can explain the life adoptees would have lived had they not been adopted. This identity was salient for participants as it manifested in ways such as expressing frustration with obstacles in gaining access to their OBC and refocusing their professional life to support other adopted adults. Moreover, findings offer implications for the examination into current adoption record practices in the United States, additional state mutual consent registries, and increased access to adoption-competent counselors for adoptees. To identify and appraise the existing clinical practice guidelines, consensus statements and Cochrane systematic reviews for the management of adult and paediatric focal spasticity to generate a single synthesized guideline. Systematic review of 12 electronic databases. Clinical practice guidelines, consensus statements and Cochrane systematic reviews for focal spasticity in adults and children. Included studies were appraised according to the AGREE II criteria. A total of 25 papers were included in this review, comprising 12 clinical practice guidelines, nine consensus statements and four Cochrane systematic reviews. The areas most strongly endorsed were: (1) management to be provided by a multi-disciplinary team, (2) therapy should be goal-directed, (3) goals to be developed in conjunction with the patient and family, and (4) importance of follow-up evaluations. There was a greater focus on activity outcomes and classification in the paediatric papers. The guidelines varied considerably in their quality, with AGREE II scores ranging from 52.8 to 97.1%. This systematic review has synthesized the key elements regarding principles of focal spasticity management, outcome measures, physical interventions and educational recommendations into a single, readily applied guideline available for clinical use. Despite considerable variability in the quality of the guidelines, several strong themes emerged. Focal spasticity management should be multi-disciplinary, patient-centred and goal-directed. Routine measurement of impairment and activity are strongly endorsed. Botulinum toxin A injection should only be provided as part of an integrated approach to focal spasticity management. Given the intense politicisation of education, many teacher educators are caught in the cross-hairs of government's reform agendas, university expectations and student teacher needs. This paper reports on a study of 28 literacy teacher educators in four countries (Canada, US, Australia and England). This paper reports on the broad question: How is politics affecting literacy teacher educators? Three specific aspects are considered: their pedagogies, identity and well-being. It describes how their pedagogy (goals and teaching strategies) has narrowed because of mandated curriculum and exit exams. It shows how their identity as academics is being complicated because they often do not have time for their research. Megaselia halterata (Wood) (Diptera: Phoridae) is a major pest of cultivated white button mushrooms, Agaricus bisporus (J.E.Lange) Emil J. Imbach (Agaricales: Agaricaceae), in the United States. The incidence and severity of M. halterata have been increasing in recent years, possibly due to the removal of certain chemical pesticides from tolerance by the EPA. Farmers' demand for alternative control measures resulted in a label extension of the fungal biopesticide BotaniGard® ES, which contains viable spores of Beauveria bassiana (GHA strain), for use in mushroom crops. Here we describe laboratory bioassays to evaluate the efficacy of the label recommended dose of the abovementioned commercial biopesticide for control of immature and adult stages of M. halterata. According to our results, eggs and larvae of M. halterata were not susceptible to infection by B. bassiana whereas pupae displayed a partial susceptibility with mortality reaching up to 65%. Concerning adults of M. halterata exposure for 60 min to a paper surface sprayed with the registered label application rate of BotaniGard® ES led to 100% mortality within a period of 16 days and a mean survival time of 8.13 days, which differed significantly from the control batch, but unlikely to result in meaningful control of phorid populations in the field. As the COVID-19 pandemic unfolds, every aspect of daily life is being altered in response to the virus. The pandemic has altered secondary education. Classes online, teachers struggling to learn Zoom and make lessons meaningful and relevant to students. Students struggling to make sense of this moment, struggling with mental health issues due to the loss of routine and in many cases contact with adult role models. Unfortunately, in times of crisis such as these some of the most disenfranchized people in society are completely overlooked and forgotten, such as refugees. However, if more teachers were to leverage the social studies potential of current events such as the Coronavirus, greater empathy would be felt for marginalized people more starkly impacted by the pandemic, leading ultimately to a heightened sense of civic engagement among the next generation. The purpose of this paper is to assist teachers in guiding their students through analyzing current events, such as COVID-19's impact on refugees, toward developing civic mindedness. In addition to this, the paper will discuss some of the broader societal impacts the virus is having within the United States, as well as ways in which this event may be viewed as a historical subject in the future. The paper will begin by building the content knowledge of high school social studies teachers through addressing the following question: "What is the difference between a refugee entering the United States now versus one year ago before the COVID-19 pandemic?" Following this, the authors will present an inquiry-based learning segment designed to teach the History correlated to the COVID-19 pandemic to a classroom of secondary education students. This paper addresses families' perceptions of corporate influence in career and technical education (CTE) through market-driven policies that enable data extraction for student profiling and seek to align K-12 education with business-driven needs. Aligning education with business needs can offer early employment, however, accelerating technological developments risk subjecting hyper-specialised individuals to highly unpredictable labour markets and ultimately job insecurity. Using grounded theory, we conducted in-depth interviews with families across the United States, to obtain their views on the hyper-specialisation in CTE. The emerging discourse is that powerful corporations offer makeshift hyper-specialisation curricula that fit their business needs and do not necessarily reflect, or indeed, consider children's best interests. This research contributes to scholarship by elucidating the views of families affected by the corporate influence in CTE. This paper examines factors associated with the retention and mobility of teachers of colour in one state in the USA, with a special focus on beginning and novice teachers. We examine year-by-year retention and mobility rates for four time periods, beginning in 2015–16. We use logistic regression models to investigate the relationship between retention and mobility status and a number of variables thought to influence teacher retention and mobility. We find that full-time status and years of teaching experience consistently predict retention and mobility, with large differences in predicted probabilities. We also find statistically significant differences in the retention and mobility rates of Latinx teachers compared to Black teachers. The paper concludes with policy implications for teacher education and induction, and a call for more complex analyses of the retention and mobility of teachers of colour, including the expanded use of disaggregated data by individual racial and ethnic groups. In this paper, we apply the reproductive justice framework to discuss how gendered racism disadvantages pregnant and parenting young Black women aging out of foster care. Specifically, we highlight the reversal of Roe v Wade as reflective of the United States' long legacy of efforts to control Black women's reproduction. We then discuss the structural factors contributing to the reproductive injustices of young Black women aging out of care, including a lack of access to sexual and reproductive health education, barriers to educational attainment, and foster care-based relational and placement deficits. Purpose: Using a minority stress paradigm, this paper examines the relationship between anti-transgender discrimination, harassment, and violence among transgender adults. Methods: Data from the 2015 U.S. National Transgender Survey were used to examine twenty types of anti-transgender experiences/problems (e.g., harassment at work, problems with police officials, verbal and physical assaults) in a sample of 27,715 transgender Americans aged 18 or older. Binge drinking during the previous month was the dependent variable, and eight control measures were examined in the multivariate analysis. Results: Experiencing any of the twenty types of anti-transgender discrimination, harassment, or violence increased the odds of binge drinking by 48%. Experiencing many such problems increased the odds of binge drinking by 104%. Multivariate analysis showed that anti-transgender discrimination, harassment, and violence remains a predictor of binge drinking even when other key measures are taken into account. Younger people, racial minority group members, and persons who were not married or "involved" were at particularly great risk. Conclusions: Consistent with the minority stress paradigm, the more different types of anti-transgender experiences people had, the more likely they were to engage in binge drinking. Targeted intervention needs to help transgender persons to avoid anti-transgender discrimination, harassment, and violence to the greatest extent possible, and to develop resiliency skills whenever they are victimized. This paper aimed to explore BDSM involvement and its effects on mental health. The study had four objectives: (1) quantify frequencies of BDSM self-labels, (2) describe patterns of BDSM involvement subtypes (i.e. fantasy, behaviour, and identity), (3) compare BDSM-related involvement among two samples: members of the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom (NCSF) and a non-NCSF sample of adults interested in or practicing BDSM, and (4) understand whether BDSM identity specialty interest group membership is associated with enhanced health (i.e. coping). Data were drawn from archival survey data on sexuality and health. Participants (N = 1036) completed BDSM identity and behaviour measures. The most common BDSM identities were 'dominant' and 'submissive'. NCSF members adopted BDSM identity labels more frequently compared to general adult BDSM practitioners. Dominant and submissive fantasy and behaviour varied by gender, sexual orientation, and relationship status. For example, cisgender men reported elevated patterns of dominant and lowered submissive BDSM involvement. Compared to non-NCSF members, NCSF members reported higher dominant and submissive fantasies and behaviours, and better mental health and emotion regulation. Finally, submissive fantasy involvement displayed statistically significant, but weak, positive associations with psychological health. As concerns about the effects of health misinformation rise, understanding why misbeliefs are accepted is increasingly important. People believe repeated statements more than novel statements, an effect known as truth by repetition, however this has not been examined in the context of tobacco information. Misbeliefs about tobacco are rampant and novel facts about tobacco are viewed as less believable. This paper examines how repetition of true and false tobacco statements affects truth perceptions. We recruited an online sample of 1,436 U.S. adults in May 2021. In an exposure phase, each participant rated their interest in 30 randomly selected statements about tobacco products and general knowledge trivia, half of them true and half false. The study had a two (tobacco product) by two (familiarity of statement claim) between-subjects design and a two (statement truth) by two (statement repetition) within-subjects design. During the testing phase participants rated the truthfulness of 24 repeated statements and 24 unseen statements. Repetition of true and false tobacco statements increased their subjective truth (diff=.20, p <.001), and the effect was larger for false claims compared to true claims. This underscores the importance of strategies to inoculate people against misinformation and calls for interventions that can stop the repetition of newly generated false claims. Objective: This one-year pilot study investigated the effectiveness of a multimedia campaign, Heart Healthy U (HHU), to increase awareness about the link between unhealthy behaviors and risk for heart disease among emerging adults on a college campus. This paper describes the implementation of HHU. Participants: The HHU campaign was implemented from the Fall of 2019 through Spring 2020 and during this time there were approximately 15,043 enrolled students at the south eastern U.S. college campus. Methods: The HHU campaign employed print (e.g., banners, posters, and yard signs) and electronic formats (e.g., email, Instagram). We designed the methods across three phases: (1) relationship building and formative research, (2) campaign development, and (3) the Heart Healthy U campaign launch. Results: The HHU encountered challenges when the novel coronavirus (COVID-19 or SARS-co-V2) interrupted campus life, however we relied on the electronic formats to reach students during the state-wide lockdown/quarantine mandates. In addition, there were two changes to the HHU health messages. First, we updated the health messages to illustrate that eating healthy and engaging in physical activity supports immune function. Next, we developed new health messages to address effects of physical isolation and anxiety by promoting psychological well-being during this historic public health crisis. Conclusions: We asked whether a multimedia campaign on a college campus could encourage emerging adults to consume fruits and vegetables and engage in physical activity according to the federally-recommended guidelines. It is essential that interventions intended to reach today's emerging adults be presented in formats that they use (e.g., social media platforms), supported by campus administrators, and endorsed by peer influencers. In conclusion, more intervention studies are needed to counter the unhealthy social norm behaviors common to college campus life that increase heart disease risk, particularly among marginalized populations. Objective: The present review paper aimed to identify published neuropsychological test norms developed for Spanish-speakers living in the United States (U.S.). Methods: We conducted a systematic review of the literature via an electronic search on PubMed using keywords "Normative data," "Neuropsychological test," "norms", "Hispanic/Latinos," "Spanish Speakers," and "United States." We added other studies and published manuals as identified by citations in papers from the original search. Results Eighteen sources of normative data for Spanish-speakers in the U.S. were identified. Of the 18 citations identified, only four provide normative data on comprehensive batteries of tests for Spanish-Speakers. Two of these are based on persons living in the southwest of the U.S., who tend to be of Mexican origin. Overall, a number of the studies are focused on older persons and although the majority include participants with wide ranges of education, participants in the ends of the education distribution tend to be underrepresented. Conclusion: Here we provide a detailed description of the neuropsychological normative data currently available for Spanish-speakers living in the U.S. While there has been increased attention towards developing norms for neuropsychological batteries in Spanish-speaking countries (e.g., Latin America and Spain), there is still an urgent need to standardize neuropsychological tests among diverse groups of Spanish-speaking adults living in the U.S. The present review presents a list of norms for U.S.-dwelling Spanish-speakers, thus providing an important tool for clinicians and researchers. Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is highly prevalent among adults in the US and is associated with substantial personal and societal costs. Yet only a small percentage of adults with AUD initiate treatment, including those with severe AUD symptoms who are most in need of treatment. In this paper we use latent profile analysis (LPA) to describe differences in symptoms of AUD severity and alcohol-related consequences among untreated adults with severe AUD symptoms who were recruited from the community. Identification of such differences will result in better understanding of this population and will improve methods of treatment outreach. The LPAs were conducted on the baseline data of 403 (50% male, 77% White, M age = 40.74 with severe AUD recruited from the community and enrolled in a trial of an intervention designed to encourage treatment initiation. Participants reported no prior AUD treatment history. The LPAs were based on indicators of AUD severity, alcohol-related negative consequences, and self-reported intention to initiate AUD treatment. The LPAs revealed 4 profiles. Profile membership was predicted by baseline participant sex and whether they were living with a partner and was associated with baseline past 30-days alcohol consumption. The findings characterize and describe the variability among adults in the community with untreated severe AUD on variables that tend to motivate such individuals to seek treatment, which could significantly advance treatment outreach efforts. This paper describes a research project conducted with international doctoral students documenting student and faculty members' experiences in a writing workshop. The purpose of this study was to understand the complexities associated with international students' academic writing competencies and develop a supportive culture as they pursue their education in the US. Participation in the writing workshop aided students in progressing through the four stages of Burch's learning model. The findings suggest that, intensive writing experiences improve writing abilities, perceptions of writing, and knowledge of when to pursue writing assistance. In addition, the workshop supported the researchers in gaining insight into their international students' experiences leading towards improved pedagogy for this student population. In this paper, Teaching Expertise in Three Countries project is used as an example to show the significance and contribution of international comparative research and to think about the possible implications for policy in early childhood education. The project studied the development of expertise in preschool teaching in Japan, China, and the United States by employing 'video-cued multivocal ethnography' to explore how teaching expertise is defined in each of these countries and what processes help teachers acquire advanced teaching skills. This project has shown similarities and culturally specific notions, in what the participants have to say about characteristics of less and more experienced teachers. These research findings raise issues and challenges in early childhood education that resonate with the situation not only in the three countries but also possibly in other countries, such as problematizing the role of remembering and reflection in professional practice and the value of experience. This commentary introduces David Kirk's paper entitled ‘Making a career in Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy in the corporatized university: Reflections on hegemony, resistance, collegiality and scholarship’, which was presented in the 2012 Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy (PESP) ‘scholar lecture’ at the British Educational Research Association (BERA) conference. We briefly describe the origins of the scholar lecture and its link to the PESP special interest group of BERA and then make a few introductory comments about the lecture, highlighting a number of points of tension that the paper raises for us. Background: As a result of the intergenerational trauma impact and experience, Native Americans continue to exhibit trauma-related issues such as high rates of substance use. After leaving high school, the pressures and stress of continuing an education, finding work/employment, and the responsibilities related to family and tribal community obligations result in the Native American young adult being more vulnerable to substance use. Objective: The purpose of this paper is to report findings of the Talking Circle intervention impact on the outcome variables of Native-Reliance, substance use, stress, and behavioural health, depression, and cumulative trauma. Methods: Native-Reliance was the theoretical underpinning for the study, demonstrating culturally safe research. A pre-test/post-test one-group design was utilised to examine how the Talking Circle intervention influenced the outcome variables. In total, 75 Native American participants, ages 18–24, participated in the Talking Circle intervention sessions. Baseline pre-intervention measures were completed and were repeated at 6-month post-intervention. Results: At 6-month post-intervention, Native-Reliance significantly revealed an increase of 40.55 (t = 22.13, p <.001), sources of stress (SS) revealed a significant decline of 3.68 (t = −18.39, p <.001), behavioural health issues (BH) showed a significant decline of 3.63 (t = −15.36, p <.001), substance-related issues (SR) showed a significant decline of 3.57 (t = −15.24, p <.001), depression (PHQ-9) showed a significant decline of 4.85 (t = −17.02, p <.001), and cumulative trauma revealed a significant decline of 2.77 (t = −13.39, p <.001). Conclusions: The use of a culturally safe Talking Circle intervention evidenced a research approach that resulted in a positive impact on reducing substance use and increasing the well-being of young Native American young adults. Pharmacotherapy for opioid addiction with methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone has proven efficacy in reducing illicit opioid use. These treatments are under-utilized among opioid-addicted individuals on parole, probation, or in drug courts. This paper examines the peer-reviewed literature on the effectiveness of pharmacotherapy for opioid addiction of adults under community-based criminal justice supervision in the US. Compared to general populations, there are relatively few papers addressing the separate impact of pharmacotherapy on individuals under community supervision. Tentative conclusions can be drawn from the extant literature. Reasonable evidence exists that illicit opioid use and self-reported criminal behaviour decline after treatment entry, and that these outcomes are as favourable among individuals under criminal justice supervision as the general treatment population. Surprisingly, there is no conclusive evidence regarding the extent to which pharmacotherapy impacts the likelihood of arrest and incarceration among individuals under supervision. However, given the proven efficacy of these three medications in reducing illicit opioid use and the evidence that, in the general population, methadone and buprenorphine treatment are associated with reduction in overdose mortality, the use of all three pharmacotherapies among patients under criminal justice supervision should be expanded while more data are collected on their impact on arrest and incarceration. This paper empirically examines the relations between homicide rates by age (adults 18 to 24 and adults 25 or older), the tattoo shop density, on-site and off-site alcohol outlets, and disadvantage. It offers an additional explanation for the relation between alcohol outlets and homicide besides alcohol availability and consumption being facilitators of such lethal violence, suggesting that these businesses are a proxy for attracting those most prone to violent behavior. The analysis estimated linear pooled cross-sectional time series models to test the relations between age-specific homicide rates and tattoo shop density, on-site alcohol density, off-site alcohol density, and a multidimensional measure of disadvantage. These relations were examined among 88 of the largest cities in the United States for the years 1998 to 2006 (city-years = 792). The findings showed positive relations between homicides rates involving young adults 18 to 24 years of age, off-site alcohol outlets, tattoo shops, controlling for disadvantage. Findings suggest business establishments that attract young adults increase the likelihood of lethal violence not solely because of the availability and consumption of alcohol, but by increasing the convergence in space and time of motivated offenders and suitable targets, with limited or absent capable guardianship. The purpose of this paper is to examine the ways in which a school–university mentorship programme promotes a range of growth experiences, both negative and positive, for the participating mentor teachers. The paper presents a brief description of a school–university partnership, discusses the ways in which this partnership operates, summarises the literature on mentoring and explores the concepts of power and vulnerability as related to how the veteran teacher participants in the study perceive the benefits and challenges of mentoring. The authors argue that the nature of the Master of Education in Teaching programme, with its heavily based clinical component and expanded student-teaching experience, provides a distinctive magnifying lens of mentoring issues that is highly relevant for other professional teaching units who are considering using mentoring as a form of professional development for teachers. This study gives insight into the experiences of five mentor teachers so as to deepen understanding about mentoring as a complex and challenging form of professional growth and leadership for teachers. In this paper, I use interview data drawn from ethnographic work on a Division 1 collegiate cross country team at a large midwestern university in the United States to demonstrate the ways that possessive individualistic discourses around hard work are embodied in classed subjectivities. I find that middle class women, the products of concerted cultivation, tend to focus on the display of hard work, and have anxiety around the value of their production of a hard-working identity. Working class women tend to treat the experience of being disciplined as an athlete as a fortunate opportunity to build physical capital, using the hard work to benefit them as athletes rather than to build their identities. These different attitudes, affected by social class, interact with a dominant discourse around hard work demonstrating the interaction between agency and structure when it comes to forming identities. Social work practice faculty have an important role in socializing MSW students to the field and practice of social work. This study, based on interviews with 15 faculty teaching an advanced clinical practice course in the United States, examines how faculty conceptualize teaching and learning. Faculty were asked about the theories or frameworks that guided their teaching, their own journeys to teaching and the resources that support their teaching. The study found that participants drew largely on their own experiences as student learners and social work practitioners and did not have much formal training in teaching and student learning. Furthermore, while half of the participants were able to identify a learning theory that guided their teaching, the other half were not. Finally, while participants articulated the need for support regarding their own teaching, many of the schools did not have formal faculty development opportunities. Racial minority families engage in "racial socialization," the process by which individuals develop meaning and understanding of what race is, and its implications. While parents are often seen as the site of this socialization, we wanted to explore which racial socialization messages were salient for young adults, and from whom they received these messages. This paper utilized focus groups to explore messages that young Black adults received about race, and what this means for their racial identity. We identified three dominant themes in our analyses: (a) the content of familial messages regarding race, identity, and prejudice, (b) critical incidents that shaped individuals' understandings of Black racial identity, and (c) familial sources. Each of these themes is constituted by various experiences and examples that shed light on racial socialization in today's social climate. Overall, parents, extended family members, and community members were sources of socializing what race meant to young Black adults. Completing a social work graduate degree can be an exciting and a challenging time for students, but the addition of a global pandemic is likely impacting their educational experiences. Using a modified version of Photovoice, a photography-based research methodology, and reflection essays, this exploratory study sought to elevate the voices of graduate students' (N = 16) perspective on learning during COVID in an American university. Findings from the qualitative analyses of the photographs and their captions and the reflective essays suggested that many students realized their inner strength by persevering when life got very hard. Themes from these analyses were slightly more positive (i.e. support from others; developing coping strategies; improved graduate experience) than negative (i.e. loneliness; emotional; being sick). Students' viewpoint on learning during COVID provides insight into how instructors can develop creative pedagogies and support students as they persist in their pursuit of a social work degree. Long COVID is associated with many symptoms, including fatigue. As some with long COVID report remission of symptoms over time, previous long COVID has become increasingly prevalent. This cross-sectional study assessed differences in fatigue and somatic symptom burden among individuals with current, previous, and no history of long COVID symptoms. An online survey was conducted with United States adults (N = 2,872), with 2,310 reporting never experiencing long COVID, 183 reporting previously experiencing long COVID, and 379 reporting currently experiencing long COVID. Multivariable linear regression analyses were used to assess the association of long COVID status with fatigue and somatic symptom burden. Participants were an average age of 41.3, with the majority identifying as female (51.7%), White (87.6%), and non-Hispanic or Latino/e (87.6%). Both fatigue and somatic symptoms were significantly higher among those with both current (ps < 0.001; d = 1.24, 1.38 respectively) and previous long COVID (ps < 0.001; d = 0.42, 0.82 respectively) compared to those reporting never having long COVID. These differences remained after accounting for health behaviors (alcohol use, tobacco use, physical activity, sleep). This paper provides an international perspective on the use of medications to treat problematic sexual interests, paraphilic disorders, and sexual preoccupation in men who have committed a sexual offence. Experts from Canada, the Czech Republic (CR), Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States met in Prague, CR in May 2017 to review and compare their treatment approaches. This report is a summary of their discussions, including empirical data from CR and Russia which have not previously been published in the English language. All participants agreed that continuing international collaboration would be very useful for the development of ethical international prescribing guidelines, as well as pooling data from studies on the efficacy and utility of pharmacological and other biological treatments for people who have committed sexual offences. The number of English language learners and limited English proficient students has grown exponentially in the United States over the past decades. Given the huge cultural and linguistic diversity among them, educating this population of students remains a challenge for teachers. This paper aims to review the types of challenges that educators face when teaching limited English proficient students in the US context. Findings from existing literature show the obstacles teachers confront are social, institutional, and personal in nature. Although some research has emphasised stronger teacher education programmes as a solution to problems related to the teaching and learning of these students, these programmes are insufficient for teachers to overcome all of the challenges they face. This paper was part of qualitative research that sought to explore motivations of Masters-level students (n = 53) in taking an elective course in international social work at a large public university in the Southeastern US. A review of the literature includes the foundational aspects of globalization and its relationship with social work education. Through content analysis, results show comportment of students' stated motivations for taking the course and the contemporaneous literature on globalization. Themes expressed are the historical context of globalization, concern about global inequalities, and the varying impacts of globalization around the world. This paper describes how the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) can be used as a statistical tool and addresses the implications of the DISTAB study in which speech, hearing and communication prevalence rates were examined in adults across five countries—Canada, France, the Netherlands, South Africa and the United States. The implications of the study results for hearing and swallowing disorders as well as the methodological issues raised by the DISTAB study are described. The authors also address the role of ICF and related methodologies such as cross-walking and the inclusion of persons with communication disorders in future surveys. For undocumented people who become eligible for a US immigrant visa, the pathway to lawful status bifurcates around one central question: how did you get into the USA? While most visa overstayers can adjust their status within the USA, undocumented border crossers must leave the USA to change their status. When they do, all but a few trigger a 10-year bar—often called ‘el castigo’ in Spanish or ‘the punishment’—on their return. This paper draws on a three-year ethnographic study to explore the process of legalisation for Latinos who entered and lived in the USA unlawfully. I pay particular attention to how ‘grounds of inadmissibility’ and federal criminal prosecutions for unauthorised entry disproportionately penalise working-class Latinos, creating a minefield of racialised obstacles to their lawful status. Together, I argue, racialised criminalisation and higher hurdles to lawful status amount to a one–two punch that makes it extraordinarily difficult for undocumented Latinos to ever change their status, even when they are eligible for an immigrant visa based on their marriage to US citizens. International social work (ISW) has gained traction across the USA with a number of schools taking the lead in promoting the values of social work through exchange programs, service learning, and volunteerism. The internalization of campus through the proactive action of institutions to incorporate global perspectives into teaching, learning, and research in order to build intercultural competence among students, faculty, and staff has received little attention. This paper assesses the level of interest of social work students at a large urban university in the southwestern USA in embracing ISW and how they conceptualized their learning needs. Using a self-administered web-based survey offered to a total of 1,500 social work students with 18% respondent rate, the research determined through a chi-square test that students in Bachelor of Social Work, Master of Social Work, and PhD programs had a significant difference in preferences in areas of interests (χ2 = 153,p ≤ 0.000). Overall, students demonstrated interest in direct practice (74.3%) and community and administrative practice (16.6%). Students also differed in their level of interest in participating in international exchange programs (χ2 = 9.6,p = 0.047). Discussions address specific and unique interests categorized broadly as ‘globalized social worker,’ ‘humanitarian social worker,’ and ‘policy social worker,’ each of which requires specific skillsets and advanced behavior skills. In this empirically based paper, we discuss educational leadership preparation as it relates to social justice, the concept of advocacy and the standards that guide leadership and counselling, respectively. To reveal how preservice leaders conceptualize advocacy as understood in professional standards, we draw on our research with 11 preservice students about the current US Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium standards and its relationship to what educational leaders should be able to know and do. Based on the insights students shared, we looked to the school counselling field to see how explicitly advocacy and social justice are defined for preservice counselors in standards and competencies for practice. We suggest that leadership programmes can look to school counselling and other disciplines to further inform them in preparing leaders for advocacy. We discuss why including more definitive advocacy and social justice language in leadership standards carries implications for future educational reforms. With more explicit and intentional definitions and examples of advocacy and social justice in education leadership standards, the better the likelihood that once students step into a school leadership role, they are prepared and willing to use their skills and knowledge in action. Undertreatment of mental illness is associated with greater acute care and costs and worse mental and physical outcomes. Structural barriers may contribute to worse care. National Health Interview Survey data for 2011–2017 were used to examine associations of psychological distress and nine structural barriers with four health services, guided by the Andersen Behavioral Model of Health Services Utilization. Per the Kessler-6 Scale, United States adults 18–64 years of age (sample size = 172,209, estimated annual population = 189.4 million) were categorized as: no or low psychological distress (NLPD: 79.2%), moderate (MPD: 17.1%), and serious (SPD: 3.7%). Those with MPD and SPD had higher likelihoods of any mental health visit (Adjusted Odds Ratio: 3.53; 8.36, respectively), hospitalization (AOR: 1.16; 1.55), emergency room/department visit (AOR: 1.62; 2.23), and lower likelihood of office visits (AOR: 0.42; 0.64) in the past 12 months compared to NLPD (all p < 0.001). Psychological distress was the largest contributor of explained variation for mental health visits (67%), hospitalization (37%), and ER/ED usage (47%). Adults with SPD and MPD faced structural barriers at higher proportions. For example, reports of "had trouble finding general doctor" were: NLPD (2.2%), MPD (6.0%), and SPD (11.8%). Eight structural barriers were positively associated with ER/ED use and five barriers negatively associated with office visits. Barriers significantly associated with all four outcomes were: "Told health care coverage not accepted" and "Delayed care, couldn't get appointment soon." Innovative policy solutions coupled with comparable innovations in care delivery for complex patient populations could ensure equitable access to health services for individuals with psychological distress. This paper reanalyzed research previously conducted with Spanish-speaking childcare providers who participated in an educational literacy program. The women in the program were generally framed as the deficient other – illiterate, immigrant women. The authors used a critical framework and Chicana/Latina feminist methodologies, namely pláticas y encuentros (talks and encounters), to investigate, reanalyze, and reinterpret the data. Through the process, the authors not only revealed the inner flame of the participants in the study, but through the collision of their own worldviews, they also exposed more deeply the assumptions buried within their epistemologies, methodologies, and positionalities. The results speak to the importance of critical examinations of power and discourses in education that often reside unexamined, or perhaps examined but largely unpublished, in our research. This paper documents substantial differences across states in their higher education (HE) structures and highlights several empirical relationships between these structures and individuals’ HE outcomes. Not surprisingly, individuals who are exposed to more-fractionalized HE structures are more likely to attend small public universities and less likely to attend large public universities. Exposure to more-fractionalized structures is also associated with increased degree attainment and increased exits from the in-state public-university system (to private and out-of-state public universities). In this paper, I conduct a critical discourse analysis of the Morehouse College Appropriate Attire Policy and discuss how issues of race, gender, and sexuality converge to reveal both overt and hidden meanings embedded in the policy. I also consider how power is used towards “other” black college men who neither fit neatly into prescribed gender norms, nor foster representations of “good” black men. I situate this critical policy analysis in the context of two ideas: bipolar masculinity and the politics of respectability, and offer implications for the use of intersectional frames in scholarship and research on men and institutional policies. This paper explores disabled persons’ narrated experiences from job interviews. Based on interviews with employed disabled persons in the United States and Norway, the analysis investigates how the informants understand and deal with employers’ interpretations of disability. Three kinds of stories are identified: discrimination, uncertainty and recognition. In the first two stories, informants portrayed employers who used a non-inclusive discourse of disability. In the story of recognition, informants perceived employers to be primarily interested in their competence, and disability was dealt with in an inclusive manner. In this paper, I will tell two of my personal stories to try to explore the secret or opaque space between the original telling and retelling of stories in narrative inquiry. This paper represents the views of two scholars in the USA with respect to the scholar lecture presented by David Kirk at the 2012 BERA – Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy (PESP) Special Interest Group meeting. We discuss how two unique features of the American universities have an impact on both the corporate nature of our work and our scholarship. These features are described as ‘the notion of outreach scholarship’ and the ‘nature of giving.’ In addition, we discuss our different situations and how they affect our ability to do the best academic work. Teachers’ initial placement has important implications for student achievement and the distribution of teachers among schools. This paper combines data from a US Baccalaureate and Beyond longitudinal study with school and school district information from the Common Core of Data to study the effects of initial school placement on teacher mobility. Multinomial logit hazard analysis shows that higher salaries may help retain teachers in the field and improved working conditions may help reduce teacher mobility within the profession. This paper empirically examines the role of religion on immigrant integration outcomes. Specifically it focuses on Islam and tests the validity of the ‘clash of cultures’ hypothesis to find out whether high levels of attachment to Islamic values, practices and Muslim identity impede the cultural and civic integration of Muslim immigrant women into American society and polity. The statistical analysis of two original surveys administered to first- and second-generation Muslim immigrant women in Southern California indicated a paradox in their integration patterns. Commitment to Islam increased Muslim immigrant women's civic and political engagement but decreased their cultural and psychological integration into US society. The findings from the narrative analysis of in-depth interviews conducted with a selected subgroup of survey respondents help to explain Islam's paradoxical impact on Muslim immigrant communities' integration outcomes. In this paper we examine American inservice teachers’ instructional methods in reading comprehension following professional development (PD), illustrating the prolonged and significant gap between research and practice in the field of reading comprehension. We explore this gap from a conceptual change perspective, positing that some level of dissatisfaction or discontentment with an existing belief, conception or practice is central to its successful revision. Thus, to support change in practice, PD for teachers should begin from the point of intrinsic pedagogical dissatisfaction, with current practices self-identified as problematic. To illustrate this, we portray the current instructional practices of three representative teachers in conjunction with their PD histories. Analyses revealed high levels of pedagogical satisfaction despite observational data divergent from the research base in reading comprehension instruction. We identify both idiosyncratic and common impediments to pedagogical and conceptual change following PD. The purpose of this paper was to examine the experiences of a Hispanic undocumented high school graduate in Texas (USA) that did not attend a higher education institution in spite of her desire to do. Using qualitative research and narrative analysis, the researcher conducted three interview levels with the participant and developed an emplotted narrative that was retrodictive in nature in an attempt to understand how a particular outcome came about. The researcher’s attempt was to identify how the participant’s understanding and interpretation of higher education policies and financial benefits affected her reality as an undocumented student. The struggles and experiences of this student are evident in her narrative. Her story resembles the reality of other undocumented students that graduate from high school in the USA and are unable to navigate the labyrinth of higher education eligibility and financial benefits. Policy-makers, school leaders and educators in general, undocumented students, researchers and immigration specialists may find this information helpful, especially when considering the continuing influx of Hispanic immigrants into the USA, and also the growing impact of the Hispanic population in the USA. This paper examines the impact of three adult roles—spouse, parent, and worker—on psychological distress and drinking among a national sample of 10,193 women in the United States, using the 1992 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA). We found that the spouse and worker roles are negatively associated with the level of psychological distress, and the parent role is positively correlated with it. Controlling for level of psychological distress, those workers generally are more likely to be drinkers, but, among drinkers, they do not consume alcoholic beverages more than non-workers. The family roles do not affect a woman's likelihood of being a drinker. However, among the drinkers, being a spouse or a parent is negatively related with level of alcohol consumption. Separating three aspects of drinking behavior—whether a woman drinks at all and, if she drinks, her levels of alcohol consumption and problem drinking—our findings suggest that drinking is not a unidimensional construct. The present case study describes the successful treatment, including long-term follow-up of a survivor of the first World Trade Center (WTC) bombing who developed posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The literature indicates that behavioral, particularly exposure based techniques, and cognitive applications have shown promising results in reducing symptoms of PTSD, in adults exposed to combat and rape. To our knowledge, no treatment protocol has been developed for PTSD following a terrorist incident. This paper presented the application of a PTSD treatment protocol based on Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) (Resick & Schnicke, 1992, 1993) in the treatment of an adult female exposed to such terrorist trauma. The increasing ethnic diversity in the U.S. population raises important challenges for community service systems. Little is known about the extent to which service systems meet the needs of different communities of color. This paper examines service utilization and unmet needs of Puerto Rican adults with intellectual disabilities (ID) in comparison to non-Latino white adults with ID to understand better the experiences of midlife and aging families from diverse backgrounds who have entered the service system. In addition, we examine the relationship of maternal support groups to service utilization and unmet service needs. We hypothesize that support groups would be an important resource for Puerto Rican mothers of adults with ID in facilitating greater use of formal services and decreasing the level of unmet service needs for their son or daughter with ID. Findings indicate that Puerto Rican adults with ID in this study had more severe impairments, received a comparable number of services, and had higher unmet service needs than non-Latino white adults with ID. In the multivariate analysis we examined factors that contribute to service utilization and unmet need for each group. We found that maternal support group participation was a significant predictor of greater service utilization and lower unmet need for Puerto Rican adults with ID, but not for non-Latino whites. These findings suggest that offering caregiver support groups may be a culturally relevant way for service systems to reach out to Puerto Rican families. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Studies suggest Black Americans have a lower prevalence of depression than White Americans despite greater exposure to risk factors for depression across the life course. We examined whether this paradox exists among students in higher education, and whether the paradox may be partly explained by racial differences in reports of impairment from depression, which is a required criterion for clinical diagnosis. We analyzed data from the Healthy Minds Study (2020–2021), restricting the sample to young adults (18–29) who identified as either Black or White. Using modified Poisson regression models to estimate risk ratios, we examined associations between race and depression impairment across five levels of depression severity, adjusting for age and gender. Approximately 23% of Black students reported depression impairment, which is significantly lower than the 28% of White students who reported depression impairment. For all students, greater depression severity was associated with greater probability of impairment; however, the relationship was more modest among Black students. At severe, moderately severe, and moderate depression levels, Black students had lower risk of depression impairment compared with White students. White students may be more likely than Black students to report significant impairment at high levels of depression. These findings open the possibility that racial differences in the impairment criterion of clinical diagnoses may explain some the racial depression paradox. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Suicide continues to be one of the leading causes of death in the United States and lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals are disproportionately at risk of suicide in comparison to heterosexuals. We examined data from adults participating for five waves (2015–2019) of the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. We first determined whether there is differential risk of suicidal thoughts, suicide plans, and suicide attempts (self-injurious thoughts and behaviors [SITBs]) in the past year according to current sexual orientation. We then estimated linear trends in prevalence of each SITB outcome stratified by each sexual orientation category. We estimate that compared to heterosexual men and women, gay and bisexual men and lesbian and bisexual women are at greater odds of past-year suicidal thoughts, suicide plans, and suicide attempts, respective to their sexes. Between 2015 and 2019, suicidal thoughts increased among bisexual men (by 34.3%, p = 0.037), lesbian women (by 18.4%, p = 0.033), and bisexual women (by 15.7%, p < 0.001). Prevalence of suicide plans increased among heterosexual men (by 15.3%, p = 0.017), gay men (by 28.5%, p = 0.037), and bisexual women (by 23.2%, p < 0.001). Suicide attempts increased among bisexual women by 26.6% (p < 0.001). Sexual minority identity is a risk factor for SITBs. Bisexual women in particular are not only at greater risk for SITBs, but estimated prevalence has increased in recent years.
