The h-index characterizes the publication achievement/impact of authors and is defined by the originator Jorge Hirsch as: 'the number of papers with citation number ≥h'. The h-index has the inherent characteristic that authors with very different total citations can have the same h-index. In fact, no contributions to the h-index are made either by papers cited fewer times than h, or citations of an individual paper above h. Such citations are 'excess' citations not credited by the h-index. To address these deficiencies, we propose a simple, straightforward modification, the hb-index: hb=h+√e, where h is the Hirsch h-index and e is the sum of all citations minus h2. This paper tackles the issue of the diversity of déjà experiences. According to the standard view in the neuropsychological literature, they should all be defined by means of a psychological criterion, by which they are experiences triggered by a perceived item and consist of a conscious clash between a first-order feeling of familiarity about the item and a second-order evaluation that assesses the first-order feeling as erroneous. This paper dismisses the standard view and contends there are two types of déjà experiences, labeled déjà vu and déjà vécu respectively. But it also takes issue with the rare proponents of a distinct déjà vécu type. Contrary to their achievement view, it argues that recollection is not involved in déjà vécu experiences as an actual mental state or a component thereof. AbstractThis paper explores the way in which elite students from Germany and Romania understand the role of talent, effort, and structural factors in shaping educational success and failure. The image of a successful student aligns with the requirements of the selection processes, with Romanian students emphasising effort, and German students projecting an image of effortless achievement. Although most students acknowledged structural inequalities played into the selection processes, they did not seem to doubt the intelligence and skills of those who were selected to the most prestigious tracks and streams. By exploring the way in which students at prestigious universities talk about success and failure, this paper captures some ways in which they resist reproducing meritocratic discourses, and other ways in which they perpetuate the myth of meritocracy. Although women account for about half of the users in the digital games market, people still consider the gaming world predominantly male. In the literature, we found studies that report on game features that are relevant for this audience; however, we did not identify works that relate game aspects to values that are relevant for women. This paper presents values considered relevant to them and attributes (features of a game) that allow women to achieve these values. To do this, we conducted 20 semi-structured interviews with women between 18 and 35 through the laddering technique. We used Means-End Theory and found and discussed nine main routes. The chains identified represent possible paths between a given attribute and a given value. The two values that mostly stand out were 'Achievement' and 'Happiness'. This paper examines the development of the field of feminist geographies in Brazil, proposing a reflection upon the different aspects of the policy (personal, institutional and national/international) which are intertwined with the geographical scientific production on gender and sexualities. This research is based on a data survey comprising 17,636 papers published between 1974 and 2015 in 90 scientific journals kept by Brazilian geographical entities at all levels of the ranking established by the government. The study emphasizes that there was an expansion of the gender and sexualities approach after the 2000s, characterized for its production from the peripheral universities, by young researchers and its publication in scientific journals of lower scientific impact, when the formal criteria of evaluation recently set in Brazil are taken into consideration. The gender studies field can be considered consolidated in Brazil, however, the approach of sexualities in the Brazilian geography still requires some work to be finally recognized. The role of organisational culture in supporting organisational outcomes is well documented in the further education (FE) sector within the UK. The benefits of a strong and unifying culture are recognised as having a positive impact on staff and students. However, a cultural institutional dichotomy has been acknowledged between the business and educational needs of colleges within the FE sector since the advent of incorporation in 1993. This paper utilised an interpretive, hermeneutical approach to analyse the perceptions of principals, middle leaders and teachers, within three general further education colleges (GFECs) in England to determine if that dichotomy exists in their current operating environment. The paper concludes that while there are elements of a clash of business and education ideals, general further education college (GFEC) culture has moved beyond the narrative of being corporate and driven solely by the concept of performativity. The article contributes to the ongoing debate on FE purpose and establishes the importance of aligning macro and subcultures into a set of professional working practices within GFECs to support positive student outcomes. The World Anti-Doping Code (2021) includes a substance on the prohibited list if it meets at least two of the following: (1) it has the potential to enhance or enhances sport performance; (2) it represents an actual or potential health risk to the athlete; (3) it violates the spirit of sport. This paper uses a case study to illustrate points of tension between this code and enhancements that are appropriate to ban; we argue that there are banned drugs (e.g., acetazolamide and dexamethasone) the use of which we have good reason to not only permit but encourage for high-altitude sports. Drawing on lessons from this case study, we propose a reformulation of the Code that requires (1–3) be met but offers preferable ways of unpacking conditions (1) and (3) – and in a way that better preserves how the spirit of sport condition should be indexed to particular sports. Our formulation is inclusive enough to rule in drugs like acetazolamide and dexamethasone as permissible in high-altitude sports while at the same time ruling out problem cases – including many drugs already on the prohibited list. Most outcome studies for children and young people who have displayed harmful sexual behaviour have focused on sexual recidivism as their primary outcome measure. Relatively little is known about broader life outcomes for children displaying such behaviours, nor about the processes involved with longer-term developmental success or failure. This paper examines long-term life course outcomes for 69 adults in the UK who presented with abusive sexual behaviour as children. Between 10 and 20 years after their childhood sexual behaviour problems, few in the sample had sexually reoffended, but general life course outcomes were much less positive. A range of individual, relational and social/environmental factors appeared to be associated with successful and unsuccessful outcomes. Successful outcomes were associated with stable partner relationships, wider supportive relationships, and educational opportunity and achievement. The findings highlight the importance of broad-based, developmental interventions in assisting those with childhood sexual behaviour problems to live successfully. The findings outlined in this paper support a move away from a traditional focus on clinical programmes of "sex offence specific work" with young people towards more developmental approaches that focus actively on wider individual, relational, and socio-environmental factors associated with desistance and resilient life outcomes. This includes, but is not restricted to, interventions that are future-oriented and that promote the skills necessary for the development of supportive personal and intimate partner relationships. Since the emergence of the concept of sustainable development, the Olympic Games have become a vehicle to demonstrate and promote the principles and practices of sustainability. The aim of this paper is to explain and evaluate how the application of sustainable development in the context of the Summer Olympic Games has evolved. Two processes have been influential in this change: first, the institutional expectations of the International Olympic Committee have encouraged greater responsibility towards the creation of legacies by potential host cities through the IOC Charter, the Olympic Agenda 2020, and the Olympic Agenda 2020+5; and second, the context and inventiveness of host cities has created new perspectives on sustainability to secure the event and raise its global profile. This paper will focus on the sustainability benchmarks established in London 2012 and evaluate whether these have been continued or extended in the subsequent editions of the Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro (2016), Tokyo (2021) and Paris (2024). The changing discourses reveal the tensions between the IOC's agendas for the event, the motivations of the host cities and the realities of delivery in changing socio-economic and political circumstances. The study draws on the theory of 'migrant optimism' and anticipated discrimination to examine whether a gap in educational expectations and achievement exists between immigrant and native students in Qatar and explores whether the impact of educational expectations on educational achievement is contingent upon the migratory status of students (migrant or native students). It utilizes data on students aged 15–16 obtained from the 2018 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA). The results show that migrant students have higher educational expectations and achievement than Qatari students, while female students in all groups enjoy better performance and hold higher educational expectations. The results also show that the gender gap among Qatari students is bigger than the gender gap among migrant students. Educational expectations have a significant and positive impact on achievement among Qatari and migrant students alike. The private lives of elite athletes are frequently subject to the curiosity, scrutiny, and judgment of the general public. While this interest in life 'off the field' is not unique to athletes, this paper argues that our focus on athletes' lives results, in part, from the fact that athletic achievement is deeply tied to the person. I will argue that athletic performance is distinct because it is both embodied and does not issue in an artifact. These features inextricably tie athletic achievements to the persons whose achievements they are, making an appreciation of athletic achievement an appreciation of the athlete qua person and not merely qua athlete. Thus, in emulating athletes, we not only want to 'play' like them, we want to 'be' like them. While this helps to explain why the public is so concerned with features of elite athletes' lives that have little bearing on athletic performance, it may also generate a responsibility on the part of athletes to live up to a basic standard of decency in all aspects of their lives and a correlative obligation on the part of fans to recognize and respect athletes as persons. Globally, sustainable development goals (SDGs) have gained significant importance due to the uncertain environmental and economic condition that needs researchers' attention. Therefore, the present paper aims to scrutinize the effect of environmental and social responsibilities and corporate governance on the achievement of SDGs of logistic firms in Malaysia. The present research also examines the mediating impact of innovative culture among the linkage of environmental and social responsibilities, corporate governance, and achievement of SDGs of logistic firms in Malaysia. The current article has applied the questionnaire method to gather the primary data from selected respondents. The present research also applied the Smart-PLS to analyze the primary data using measurement and structural model assessment. The results indicated that environmental and social responsibilities have a positive linkage with the achievement of SDGs of logistic firms in Malaysia. The findings also exposed that innovative culture significantly mediates the relationship between environmental and social responsibilities and the achievement of SDGs of logistic firms in Malaysia. Several states in the US have removed time limits on their state assessments. In Indiana, where this study takes place, the state assessment is both untimed during the testing window and allows unlimited breaks during the testing session. Using grade 3 and 8 math and English state assessment data, in this paper we focus on time used for testing and examine whether students who take more time tend to outperform their peers. Further, we also examine if the number of breaks students take is associated with student achievement scores. Findings suggest that even in an untimed setting, there remains a strong association between time spent on the assessment and achievement at both the student and school level. The number of breaks, on the other hand, show little to no association with achievement after controlling for time. The paper concludes with a discussion of the policy implications of the findings. One of the goals of the Industry 4.0 paradigm is the sustainable success within a mass customization environment, which in turn, depends on the manufacturing efficiency of the transformation processes. In this paper we propose to represent manufacturing efficiency within the context demand fulfillment. The main original contribution of this paper are two demand fulfillment analytical expressions. Their novelty is on the way they are expressed, that is, in terms of the structural elements that define a mass customization environment. Their usefulness was put to the test via a Discrete Event Simulation (DES) model of two different demand fulfillment strategies (namely inventory-oriented level and capacity-oriented chase strategies). The obtained results suggest that the analytical expressions act as a fairly good trend indicator of the missed demand values increase/decrease. The 1902–1904 Scottish National Antarctic (Scotia) Expedition led by William Speirs Bruce was overshadowed by the 1901–1904 British National Antarctic (Discovery) Expedition led by Robert Falcon Scott. The establishment of the independent Scottish expedition had been resented by those promoting the ‘official’ British venture and the accolades accorded to each on their return home were very different. The Royal Scottish Geographical Society honoured both leaders with prestigious medals and later, after public pressure, rewarded Scotia’s captain and scientific staff but not her officers or crew. By contrast, the Royal Geographical Society rewarded the leader and personnel of the Discovery expedition and completely ignored Scotia. An even greater demarcation arose when the Polar Medal was hastily created for the benefit of Scott and the Discovery team, and subsequently extended to the crews of their two relief ships. Aggrieved that his men had not received such public recognition, Bruce commissioned his own expedition silver medal, yet did not present it to all eligible personnel. His exclusion of artist William Cuthbertson and taxidermist Alastair Ross is paradoxical given his indignation over the partiality of other awards but may indicate some unacknowledged personal friction during the Scotia expedition. Most secondary (high) schools in a broad range of jurisdictions internationally engage in various forms of high stakes, standardized assessment and related qualifications. In this paper, we interrogate how educational achievement regimes – especially via the reporting of curriculum and assessment 'data' – continue to mobilize particular gender norms. Drawing on Derrida's notion of haunting we explore how such regimes impose and reinscribe stable and binary gendered patterning and create what Barad has named 'entangled relationalities of inheritance' [,] despite young people (and many schools) moving towards greater recognition of non-binary genders. Drawing on assessment data from Aotearoa New Zealand, we look at both generalized reporting of educational achievement data along the lines of 'male' and 'female' and on reporting of a single (historically gendered) curriculum subject – health education. We argue that such systems are 'haunted' by stable gender categorizations and hierarchies and we ask what this means for the reporting of educational assessment data and the erasure of identities that don't align with the binary. In regard to two recent publications in the Mediterranean J. Math. (2021) and Forum Math. (2021) related to fully and characteristically inert socle-regularity, respectively, we define and study the so-called weakly characteristically inert socle-regular groups. In that aspect, as a culmination of the investigations of this sort, some more global results are obtained and, moreover, some new concrete results concerning the weakly fully inert socle-regular groups, defined as in the firstly mentioned above paper, are also established. In particular, we prove that all torsion-complete groups are characteristically inert socle-regular, which encompasses an achievement from the secondly mentioned paper and completely settles the problem posed there about this class of groups. The last decades have seen an increase in mental health problems among young people in Western countries; this has been tied to increasing educational achievement pressure and body dissatisfaction. The purpose of this paper is to explore how young people talk about reaching educational and body ideals, whether there are shared cultural imperatives underlying youths' drive to reach educational goals and body ideals, and how such imperatives relate to young people's mental health. Based on interviews with 15–18-year-old boys and girls (n=53), this paper identifies a cultural imperative permeating boys' and girls' talk about how they work towards their educational aims and their ideal body: with duty, grit and self-discipline. What also unites the fields of educational achievement and body ideals is that the qualities deemed necessary to achieve their goals in either field seem to also be potentially harmful to some young people's mental health. This cross-sectional study looks into how students' perceived teacher support is linked to achievement emotions in mathematics via academic control and value. The data was gathered from 602 secondary students (13-16-year-olds) in 16 mathematics classrooms from three public schools in Jiangsu province, China. Participants were asked to respond to the paper-pencil questionnaire assessing students' perceived teacher support, cognitive appraisals, and achievement emotions in mathematics. Findings showed that cognitive appraisals played complete mediation roles in teacher support and achievement emotions. Intrinsic value and mathematics self-concept were shown to serve a positive role in teacher support and achievement emotions, whereas extrinsic value was found to play a negative one. Besides, teacher support showed the greatest indirect effect on achievement emotions through mathematics self-concept. Lastly, findings indicated the great relevance of teacher support to students' anger, boredom, enjoyment and relaxation in mathematics classrooms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper compares the educational achievement and growth of Latinx third through eighth-grade students attending school along the U.S.-Mexico Border and in the interior of the four Border states. The theories of structural and legal violence predict that powerful Anglos have created systems of social reproduction, concentrated disadvantage, and immigration law that reduce Latinx education close to the U.S.-Mexico Border. We test these theories with data from the Stanford Education Data Archive (SEDA), which contains information on Latinx achievement and growth in all public school districts in the four Border states. We find that Latinx achievement and growth are similar along the Border and in the interior except in Texas, where concentrated disadvantage dramatically lowers Latinx achievement and growth. We also find that social reproduction is more beneficial for Latinx youth along the Border because, surprisingly, Latinx adults tend to be more educated near the border than in the interior. We find no evidence that immigration laws reduce education more near the Border than in the interior. We discuss the implications of our findings for theory and policy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, I discuss the concepts "teaching" and "learning" and investigate the connections between them. Starting from the perspective on teaching and learning expressed in The European Qualifications Framework (EQF), I analyse three theses on the concept of teaching: the Dewey-thesis, the Standard-thesis and the Hirst-thesis, identifying problems in the established definitions. Following Hirst, I contend that teaching is an intention, hence a potential, having learning as its possible realization. That the learning is only possible is the papers main argument, since it explains how and why (the quality of) input is vitally important in educational settings. This idea is in direct opposition to the view in the EQF. In consequence, I argue that the connection between teaching and learning is teleological as opposed to mechanical. By way of contrast, I distinguish my understanding from Ryle-like analyses of teaching as task and learning as achievement, and argue that on a teleological understanding, teaching might be considered an achievement in its own right. Previous research finds that low achievers and students from lower socioeconomic status backgrounds are more likely to bully peers, but fails to satisfactorily explain why. This paper tests the hypothesis that feelings of insecurity mediate the relationship between family background and low achievement, as predictors, and self-perception of being a bully, as the outcome. It operationalizes feelings of insecurity as self-esteem and academic-status insecurity. Using a large and diverse dataset of survey responses from secondary school males in the U.S. (N = 7,291, 45% White, 30% Black, 25% Latino from 6th-12th grade), the paper applies multi-level mediation analyses to test the hypothesis separately for Blacks, Whites, and Latinos. For all three groups, the insecurity measures account for virtually all of the relationship between a grade point average and self-perception of being a bully, and about a third of the relationship between family background and the same bullying measure. Teachers are increasingly incorporating new learning materials into their classes: mobile apps, VR, and other results of humanity's digital development. The aim of the study was to compare the impact of the traditional approach to teaching mathematics and the use of MalMath application on the academic performance of students in terms of conceptual and procedural knowledge, problem solving, and the level of their learning motivation. The participants were 72 students. A quasi-experimental study was conducted, which revealed that the participants of the experimental MalMath group were more academically successful (45.11) than the control group students (33.23), which was statistically significant. The results of the study confirmed the increased learning motivation when learning with the MalMath application (t-test was 5.396). The study results confirm the data of other scientific papers on the positive impact of MalMath application on the academic performance and motivation of students. Theoretical and practical implications of this study are based on the possibilities of further theoretical study and practical use of mobile applications in the process of learning mathematics, comparing the effectiveness of MalMath with other applications. Marek Pokropski's "Mechanisms and Consciousness Integrating Phenomenology with Cognitive Science" reopens the question about the possibility of naturalization of phenomenology. The author adopts the position of nonreductive mechanistic integration, which, he claims, has offered new methodological perspectives for studying complex mental phenomena such as consciousness. In this paper, I outline the context of the discussions on the relationship between phenomenology and cognitive sciences, and (§2) discuss the approach proposed by Pokropski, pointing out the main arguments and the most important research achievements. Then I focus on some difficulties of this position. The first of these I associate with a procedure which I call a dismemberment of phenomenology (§3). The second (§4) concerns the concept of constraint, which is key to Pokropski's analyzes, and some consequences of its application and alternative reading. Finally, in §5 I draw attention to two difficulties. The first is whether it is possible to read phenomenology in terms of functional analysis; the second is related to the doubt whether psychological or phenomenological functional explanations can be treated as mechanistic (which is a strong premise of Pokropski's argument). Transcripts and testamurs serve to confirm the award of a degree but offer limited information on what a student can actually do. This conceptual paper considers the problem of how graduate achievements are represented by universities in typically reductive and limited ways that do not enable student achievements and distinctiveness to be communicated to future employers, communities and students themselves. It argues that refinements to existing methods for the design and development of assessment are needed to encompass both university validated and contextualised credentials along with student-constructed portrayals of achievement and personas. Significant change is needed to assessment design, data capture and storage and the ways in which learning outcomes are tracked across a program and over time. Innovations in assessment representation should strengthen employer trust in the value of degrees, student trust in assessment processes and scaffold student agency in curating their employability narratives. During the Interwar period, female athletes from Denmark dominated international swimming competitions. It was the first time that the country demonstrated sporting success in a core Olympic discipline on the global sporting level. Most of the Danish swimmers had the same coach, the co-leader of the Institute of Danish Women's Gymnastics (DKI), Ingeborg Paul-Petersen. Based on archival sources and historical newspaper reports, this paper shows that Paul-Petersen's role as an educator in the DKI and her vast experience in swimming training provided her with the perfect skills and context to develop her athletes into elite swimmers. She profited from the unique environment at the DKI that led her to approach coaching as a combination of motherly care for her young athletes and a discipling. However, Paul-Petersen avoided publicity and therefore her extraordinary achievements remained largely unnoticed until date. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Entrepreneurship Education (EE) programmes world-wide serve a highly standardized menu of activities for student consumption, such as pitching exercises, competitions and mini-companies. This situation has been called the McDonaldization of EE, where standard activities are adopted globally. In this paper we study the influence of Junior Achievement (JA) – the 'original burger' - to draw attention to the institutionalizing pressure it exerts on EE. We use data from JA organizational websites in England, Sweden and Denmark to describe JA as a global institution exerting homogenizing pressures on the field of EE. Five common dynamics are identified to explain in more detail how JA contributes to the homogenization of EE through: neutralizing ideology; propagating the mini-company template; evidencing strategically; facilitating communion and mythologizing success. New research avenues studying the influence of JA as a powerful institution and potential counter-actions to de-institutionalize EE are proposed. Junior Achievement has been studied before, but most investigations consider the impact of JA on individuals, in terms of effects on students' knowledge and skills. Between 1882 and 2016, the medical literature offered a variety of etiologic hypotheses to explain Joan of Arc's voices, visions, and unwavering belief that she was the instrument of God. Although Joan lived from 1412 to 1431, there is extensive primary documentation of her life, including transcripts of her testimony during the Trial of Condemnation. Once this source material was compiled and made available, physician-authors began to theorize about Joan's neuropsychiatric symptoms in the context of her remarkable achievements. This article summarizes all papers written by physician-authors about Joan of Arc. The historical flow of diagnostic speculation in the medical literature reflects the cultural context in which it was produced as well as the emergence of novel ideas and new technologies in psychiatry, neurology, and neuropsychiatry. Though the rise of social media has provided countless advantages and possibilities, both within and without the domain of sports, recent years have also seen some more detrimental aspects of these technologies come to light. In particular, the widespread social media culture surrounding fitness – 'fitspiration' – warrants attention for the way it encourages self-sexualization and -objectification, thereby epitomizing a wider issue with photo-based social media in general. Though the negative impact of fitspiration has been well documented, what is less understood are the ways it potentially impacts and molds moral psychology, and how these same aspects may come to influence digital sports subcultures more broadly. In this theoretical paper, I rely on the insights of Friedrich Nietzsche to analyze the moral significance of a culture like fitspiration becoming normalized and influential in structuring and informing self-understanding, notions of value, and how to flourish in life. Using two doctrines central to Nietzsche's philosophy—The Last Man and his conception of the 'higher self' – I argue that fitspiration involves a form of hedonism that is potentially harmful to the pursuit and achievement of human flourishing. Through fitspiration, desire is elevated to a central moral principle, underlying the way users both consume and produce its content, catering simultaneously to their desires for external validation and instant gratification. It thereby creates conditions which foster a culture in adherence to the ethos of The Last Man. In doing so, I argue it impedes the cultivation of the virtues and higher values which define the higher individual, regarded by Nietzsche as essential for human flourishing. However, drawing on the ethical framework of the higher individual provides the philosophical and psychological resources with which resisting and overcoming the more harmful temptations of these trends may be possible. Skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are promoted by the Australian government as pivotal for Australia's economic prosperity. Research on equity groups suggests that group membership is associated with several factors linked to 'leakage' from the STEM pipeline of school, university and transition to work. In this paper we draw on longitudinal Australian data to understand what factors influence the participation of equity group students in university STEM courses, and to explore how the STEM pathways of those groups differ from those of non-equity students. We identified several important factors which influence participation at two critical points of the STEM pipeline; transition from school into university, and transition from university into the STEM workforce. Our results indicated that higher levels of mathematics self-concept and instrumental valuing of mathematics in early adolescence predict continuation in the STEM pathway for all students and particularly those from low socioeconomic status backgrounds. As the Covid-19 pandemic has swept across the world, the wearing of medical facemasks has become a hot topic on social media. In China, the relevant discourses are entangled with codes of medical science, national self-esteem and appropriated modernity. These discourses can be dated back to the narrative established by Dr Wu Lien-teh, the great fighter in the Manchurian plagues of 1910–1911 and 1920–1921. This paper reveals that Wu and his colleagues used different strategies when displaying to the Western world their achievements in the anti-plague battle and when proving the effectiveness of the Western medical and hygienic system to Chinese people. Wu and his colleagues used metonymies, analogues and metaphors on or related to medical facemasks to illustrate the possibility of building a modernised nation with sovereignty. Because the construction of a sanitary system in China has always been labelled as a patriotic movement (Rogaski, Ruth. 2004. Hygienic Modernity: Meanings of Health and Disease in Treaty-Port China. In recent years, 'place-based' interventions have become influential in shaping economic development policy, especially at the European level. From the 2007 to 2013 programming period onwards, EU Cohesion policy, adopted a 'place-based' approach to encourage the competitiveness of all regions. Rather than spatially-blind interventions, the focus is on tackling territorial inequalities via a more sophisticated spatially-sensitive approach to stimulate economic change, at the local level. The challenge is that place-based policies are complex, risky and the performance indicators used to capture the achievements from EU Cohesion policy focus on direct results rather than expected policy change, making it hard to prove effectiveness and value for money. This paper contributes to ongoing academic and policy debates about how to capture the achievements of EU Cohesion policy, through an in-depth case study of 'place-based' interventions made via Interreg funding, to encourage cross-border cooperation between Spain and Portugal. The evidence illustrates that there is a need for novel approaches, which are conceptually informed and spatially sensitive to be able to capture not only the quantitative but also the qualitative achievements generated through EU 'place-based' interventions. Universities have a remarkable role in society and they are expected to contribute to the achievement of sustainable development goals (SDGs). This paper investigates the behaviour of a sample of Spanish universities according to how they have addressed the SDGs in their strategic plans and other sustainability-related practices. Data were collected through content analysis of existing strategic plans, consultation of university websites with strategic plans, and examination of official websites of professional organisations working for sustainability. Our findings reveal a low level of sustainability planning within the Spanish university setting. Furthermore, among the universities with strategic plans, we identify diverse approaches in addressing SDGs, categorised through a combination of Abrahamson's model and Oliver's strategic responses framework. These strategies range from a combination of acquiescence and efficiency perspectives to aligning fad/fashion perspectives with the avoidance strategy. Piers Bohl (1865–1921) was an outstanding Latvian mathematician whose name is particularly connected with several crucial achievements that were ahead of their time. Unfortunately, the contemporary mathematical community did not recognize their significance. This paper discusses one of Bohl's results from 1908 that remained nearly unnoticed, even up until the present. It concerns a general complex trinomial and answers the problem of the distribution of its roots with respect to a given modulus. During the last few decades, this and other related problems have been extensively studied in numerous particular cases, without knowledge of this existing answer. Homework completion and self-regulatory ability have both been extensively studied to examine their impact on learning achievement. Moreover, the reciprocal nature of how these two qualities affect one another is also an area of research. While evidence shows that voluntary completion of assigned homework predicts self-regulation in students, a natural question is whether this can be facilitated with mandatory homework assignments. Research to this extent has been tentative: results are often positive, but issues with experimental design preclude strong conclusions or repeatability of the experiment. Industry 4.0 brings a revolution in using information and communication technologies within business activities. As such, Industry 4.0 enables important space for quality-related improvements but requires a sustained quality management system (QMS). The aim of this study is to predict the influence of ISO 9004:2018 QMS elements on Improvement, Learning, and Innovation achievements in Industry 4.0 using the SEM-ANN approach. The survey included 345 domestic and international companies of different types operating in Serbia. Conclusions demonstrate a direct positive influence between observed constructs (Leadership, Process Management, Resource Management, Performance Management) and Improvement, Learning, and Innovation. Only the Context and Identity of the organisation has a negative direction drawn from SEM analysis. Further, ANN verified SEM results, pointing out that all observed variables are seen as predictors of Improvement, Learning, and Innovation. The importance level corresponds to those elements' SEM ranking. The paper compares the lives of three female social scientists born in the first two decades of the twentieth century and belonging to the first generations that had the opportunity not only to study at universities, but also to realistically consider a professional career in academia. Marie Jahoda, Herta Herzog and Patricia L. Kendall made their ways separately and interacted only rarely with each other, but shared at least one characteristic which influenced their careers: they were married to Paul F. Lazarsfeld, one of the eminent sociologists of the twentieth century, prominent as someone who encouraged and supported many of his collaborators and students. The comparison of these three women shows that they were professionally successful but did not completely prioritize academic work before other interests, ambitions, and obligations. These priorities found a correspondence in their underperformance in academia with regard to the particular preconditions to enter the pantheon of an academic discipline. Both their oeuvres and their academic records suggest that they were not actively striving to become academic 'immortals.' Four-day school week schedules are being adopted with increasing frequency, particularly in rural areas. In this paper, we consider the academic implications of students in Oregon attending a four-day school week for the first time when they enter high school. We find 11th grade math achievement in 0.09 standard deviations lower among four-day school week students, with significant impacts driven by four-day school week students in non-rural settings. We also find a greater number of four-day school week students being classified as chronically absent. The aim of this paper is to describe and interpret the main objectives of the educational policy of the central elites of the Liberals in the region of Greek Macedonia during the period 1915–1924 concerning the process of assimilation and especially the cultural assimilation, the structural integration and the psychological identification of the so-called xenophone or allophone population. Exploring students' experiences with instructional approaches and learning environments is of paramount significance, as students' experiences influence their engagement and achievements. To this end, 148 students' experiences with an engaging process-genre approach to research writing were explored to document their engagement with the approach and factors influencing their engagement and to examine whether students' writing quality improved significantly. Students' narratives, the researcher's reflective journals, and students' pretest and posttest scores on the Introduction part-genres were collected and analyzed through thematic analyses and a paired samples t-test. Our findings identified facilitators and indicators of student engagement with the approach and showed that students assisted each other agentively not only in doing the activities but also in sustaining engagement in and beyond the classroom. Students attributed their sustained engagement and achievements to observing the negotiated norms, to the teaching-learning cycle of the engaging process-genre approach, and to the teacher's kindness, patience, and professional advice. These findings highlight the significance of learning experiences and suggest that teachers should consider adopting the engaging process-genre approach to establish negotiated norms, routines, and roles to trigger and sustain students' engagement with learning-to-write activities and writing. The first part of Chen's paper illustrates the fact that reasons contained in common sense serve an explanatory role fairly well for everyday living. The inadequacy of commonsensical explanations for abnormal cases, however, breeds the desire to seek a unified explanation for all cases. Philosopher-scientists, as Chen characterizes them, hold the conviction that such an explanation is offered by speculative theories, which are created by reflecting on the reasons contained in common sense and then weaving them into a systematic theory. The second part of the paper shows that the philosopher-scientists' theoretical project is doomed in light of the achievement of modern science, for which success in constructing positive theories relies on technical concepts defined independently of natural understanding and languages. Seeing this might help philosophy reorient itself to conceptual investigation and reflection on experience, which in Chen's view offer the unique form of knowing that has always been central to the philosophical tradition. There is a gap in the existing literature in exploring comprehensive capability needs and degree of functioning achievements of indigenous people living in developing nations. This study offers a nine-dimensional 43-item statistically valid, and reliable model that captures capability and functioning achievement indicators as perceived by the indigenous people of Bangladesh. Also, the paper investigates the extent to which the impacts of capability dimensions on functioning achievements change concerning the degree of use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) by the indigenous community. The methodology of the study is based on 1741 primary data collected by way of a survey and analyzed through Structural Equation Modeling. Results revealed that effects of seven out of eight capability dimensions on functioning achievements had improved significantly due to the higher use of ICT. It is timely to investigate how essential workers may be incorporated into existing understandings of just transition, and whether and how such workers have been addressed in discussions on just transition under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). In so doing, one might better understand the relationship of essential workers to the achievement of the Paris goals, and assess entry points for making such connections explicit. Three approaches to the concept of just transition, drawn from a study conducted by Dimitris Stevis and Romain Felli, provide a useful reference point for how the concept of a just transition is understood by different actors. This paper extends the framework to consider how, under each of the three orientations, essential workers may be relevant to a just transition. The paper then applies the framework to the corpus of decisions, reports, declarations, and submissions that make up the written record of discussions on just transition taking place under the UNFCCC. Since the standards-based education movement began in the early 1990s, mathematics education reformers have developed and evaluated many interventions to support students in mastering more rigorous content. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of U.S. PreK-12 mathematics intervention effects from 1991 to 2017 to study sources of heterogeneity. From more than 9,000 published and unpublished study reports, we found 191 randomized control trials that met our inclusion criteria, with 1,109 effect size estimates representing more than a quarter of a million students. The average effect size on student mathematics achievement was 0.31, with wide heterogeneity of most effects ranging from −0.60 to 1.23. Two modeling approaches—meta-regression and machine learning—provided converging evidence that outcome measure type (researcher-created vs. standardized) and technology delivery (vs. teacher or interventionist delivery) were predictors of effect size. The paper explores how a project implemented in the framework of the LIRA2030 Africa programme is contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) on water, sanitation and health in the West African coastal cities of Cotonou (Benin) and Lomé (Togo). Based on co-produced knowledge on water, sanitation and health risks, collected through a transdisciplinary approach, we investigated socio-ecological sanitation and the applicability of an Ecohealth model to support SDGs 3, 6 and 11. According to our findings, the basis for the achievement of SDGs in these cities lies in addressing bad sanitation and hygiene related to a linear urban metabolism, poor groundwater quality and the occurrence of health risks (malaria, gastroenteritis, diarrheal). In this regard, the projects contributed by developing socioecological sanitation facilities for groundwater quality improvement and protection and for health risk reduction. An Ecohealth model was also developed to help improve and maintain the quality of groundwater in the study cities to promote healthy living and for sustainability.
