Many survivors of child sexual abuse who engage in psychotherapy also experience physical health problems. This article summarizes the findings of a multiphased qualitative study about survivors' experiences in healthcare settings. The study informed the development of the Handbook on Sensitive Practice for Health Care Practitioners: Lessons from Adult Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse (Schachter, Stalker, Teram, Lasiuk, & Danilkewich, 2009), which is intended to help healthcare providers from all disciplines understand the effect of child sexual abuse on some survivors' abilities to access and benefit from health care. This paper discusses what psychotherapists can learn from the healthcare experiences of the male survivors who participated in this project. It also offers practical suggestions for supporting male clients who experience difficulty seeking treatment for physical health concerns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This essay explores the complex struggles over the reinvention of mountaineering practices and ethics during the postwar period in the Rocky Mountains of Canada between competing interest groups of disparate climbers. Specifically, we focus on the increased challenges to the hegemony of the Alpine Club of Canada (ACC) by a wave of young, working-class emigrants, who contentiously broadened the limits and operative goals/meanings of the sport in the range. In doing so, this paper examines the controversy that erupted within the climbing community over first ascent of Brussels Peak in 1948, followed by a discussion of the arrival of renowned climber Hans Gmoser (1932-2006), whose early activities in the Rockies' eastern front irrevocably challenged local tradition and the hegemony of the ACC. Outdoor learning offers clear physical, cognitive, social-emotional and academic benefits for children and yet, it is considered a grassroots approach to teaching and learning in elementary schools. We examined teachers' perspectives on barriers and supports for outdoor learning in public elementary schools. Thirty-six teachers in (urban and rural) British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario (all female; Mean age = 43.84, SD = 10) participated in one of five virtually administered, semi-structured focus groups. Questions/prompts facilitated a discussion on teachers' experiences with barriers and supports for outdoor learning. Thematic analysis was used to identify main themes. Four interrelated themes and further sub-themes were found: 1) Teacher characteristics: interest/motivation to teach outdoors, preparedness, confidence in handling risks; 2) Systemic factors: principal support, school/district policies, funding/resources, curriculum, school schedule; 3) Culture: school culture, societal beliefs about education, family backgrounds; 4) Environmental factors: weather, built/natural environment, hazards. Systemic support is needed to integrate outdoor learning in schools. The findings in this study are relevant to health education specialists particularly focused on elementary school education. Social work research and literature in the area of supervision tends to focus on the supervision of field education students. Less attention is given to the supervision of social work practitioners and there is almost no information that examines how social workers become supervisors. This exploratory study interviewed 27 practicing social work supervisors across different fields of social work practice in Western Canada. The participants included 15 supervisors with a graduate degree and 12 supervisors with an undergraduate degree. The supervisors completed a brief questionnaire that was followed by a structured interview. Supervisors were asked how they came to be social work supervisors. Thematic analysis of the supervisors' responses revealed three pathways to supervision: task exposure, supervision by happen chance, and deliberate decision. The responses suggested that additional focus on supervision might be included in undergraduate education and that universities, professional associations, and employers pay more attention to succession planning. Flower buds of Cannabis sativa develop as inflorescences (buds) which are harvested and dried prior to sale. The extent to which fungal plant pathogens can colonize the buds prior to harvest has not been previously studied. Flower buds were sampled at various pre-harvest and harvest time periods during 2015-2017 at locations in British Columbia and Alberta to determine the range of fungi present. Isolated fungi were inoculated onto developing buds to determine the extent of tissue colonization. A pre- and post-harvest internal rot was associated with Botrytis cinerea, causing botrytis bud rot. In addition, two species of Penicillium - P. olsonii and P. copticola - were recovered from pre-harvest flower buds, as well as dried buds, and shown to cause penicillium bud rot. Scanning electron microscopy studies revealed colonization and sporulation on bracts and stigmas of the flower buds by P. olsonii. Several Fusarium species, which were identified using ITS rDNA sequences as F. solani, F. oxysporum and F. equiseti, were isolated from pre-harvest flower buds. These fungi colonized the flower buds following artificial inoculation and caused visible rot symptoms. The most severe symptoms were caused by F. solani, followed by F. oxysporum and, to a much lesser extent, F. equiseti. Powdery mildew infection of the foliage and flower buds was caused by Golovinomyces(Erysiphe) cichoracearum. The pathogen was detected on young vegetatively propagated cuttings and sporulation was abundant on older plants and on flower buds. The various fungi recovered from cannabis flower buds may be present as contaminants from aerially dispersed spores and have the potential to cause various types of pre- and post-harvest bud rot under conducive environmental conditions. Powdery mildew may be spread through aerially disseminated spores and infected propagation materials. Management of these pathogens will require monitoring of the growth environment for spore levels and implementation of sanitization methods to reduce inoculum sources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The primary purpose of the present research was to examine whether bodily (i.e., sensorimotor-derived) knowledge influences processing of insults. We presented more embodied insults (e.g., asswipe), less embodied insults (e.g., cheapskate), and noninsults (e.g., hardwood) in two Stroop tasks. Results from multiple regression analyses showed that (1) there was an insult Stroop effect, in which colour-naming latencies were slower to the insult than to the noninsult stimuli, and (2) bodily experience ratings accounted for a significant amount of unique colour-naming latency variability for insults, even with several other predictor variables (e.g., frequency, offensiveness, imageability) included in the analyses; colour naming was slower for relatively more embodied insults. To determine whether bodily experience effects generalised to noninsult stimuli, we presented high and low body–object interaction (BOI) words in a third Stroop task. In this experiment, BOI did not account for any unique colour-naming latency variability. These results suggest that valence is important to these effects, as bodily knowledge slows responding in the Stroop task only for insults. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
