This article contributes to the innovative literature on human mobility, highlighting the sense of place linked to transient mobility among people who live on an island. Drawing on 40 in-depth interviews with Romanians living in the Canary Islands, this paper introduces the concept of a 'floating sense of place' and advances understandings on how people of different generations use their experiences of mobility in time and space to construct and interpret their sense of place on the move. How is floating sense of place created and how does mobility affect the sense of belonging of people who live transiently on an island? I highlight that the socio-economic circumstances of mobile people together with the particular conditions of the island – especially the presence of the ocean – create corporeal and sensorial predispositions that contribute to the creation of the 'floating sense of place'. I argue that mobility articulates multiple practices and imaginaries that connect people with the ocean – as both a real and symbolic element. In turn, this helps them bond with various places in their transitory movement, and influences the construction of a floating sense of place: a) living in a floating 'paradise' and moving for work or business; b) in-between floating; and c) on-the-move floating: between drift and search of place and future aspirations. Considerable attention has been given in the economic literature to Dutch disease, with symptoms of the disease being extensively described inmany different contexts. Dutch disease is a condition which describes the reaction of an economy, subject to rapid change, on finding new export uses for natural resources. None of the studies, however, has focused on the tourist industry as a source of increased wealth through the exploitation of natural resources, such as beaches or natural areas, using typical mass models of tourism development. By examining two different Spanish regions, this paper provides evidence that the Balearics and the Canary Islands, whose economies are heavily orientated towards tourism, both show signs of Dutch disease and that, as a result, their economic growth might be compromised in coming years. The pollen of Canary endemic genus Allagopappus Cass., which includes two species, was examined by light and scanning electron microscopy. Ten populations in all were studied and the following parameters were measured: polar axis (P), equatorial diameter (E), polar exine thickness (Ex1), length (L) and thickness (A) of the spines in the meridional optical section, exine thickness at the centre of the mesocolpium in the interapertural area (Ex2) and distance between spines (De) in the equatorial optical section. The data were processed statistically by the Simpson & Roe graphical test, ANOVA I test for population analysis, and Student's t test for species analysis. Pollen grains are trizonocolporate with shape generally oblate–spheroidal and also prolate–spheroidal, spheroidal or suboblate. Tectum is complete, perforate, with supratectal spines. The results show that the pollen of the two species is very similar regarding shape, apertures, and ornamentation. Nevertheless, the Student's t test shows that pollen from Allagopappus viscosissimus Bolle is larger and it has a thicker exine than that of Allagopappus dichotomus (L. f.) Cass. with a highly significant difference. Furthermore, the ANOVA test seems to point out differences for P, E, Ex1, and Ex2 between populations. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
